A Report On What's Going On With MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2
Harry here with an intro to Dan's MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 set report. Ya know... I really want this to be a good movie. So far, they've done a really good job keeping the script on the qt, and I wish them the best of luck in that endeavor. BUT... I really am dying to take a look see. Right now.... In my mind and in reality... John Woo, the coolest filmmaker known to man, is making an incredibly over-the-top (allegedly) action film... HOWEVER... Is it as 'confusing' as the DePalma one? (Personally I thought the plot was straight forward, but it seems many were confused) Poison? Hmmm... Hopefully it will have the tension of THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (God, I love that movie).... We'll see. Here's Dan...
Hi Harry,
MI2 has been filming around Sydney of late. Last week they were filming at a place called the Rocks. It's very close to the Harbour
Bridge.
This week they've been setting up at Bear Island which is not far from were I live. Today they were practices a stunt there which
involves a motorcycle jump from the island onto a wooden bridge. Unfortunetly I don't have a digital camera, because what they are
doing looks pretty cool. To do the stunt the bike is attached to bungee cables which are themselves attached to horizontal wires.
This allows for the bike to move horizontally and to make it safe to land. I'm assuming they are using this system so that Cruise
can do the stunt himself. From what I've heard he's done a workshop on riding the bike and will be doing alot of the stunts himself.
They did a test run of the stunt and it looked pretty good. The landing looked a little dodgy though. I'm sure it will improve. They
have also put in some fake rails on the bridge so it looks like they'll be crashing something off it. There was also and old looking car
down there. It may be the car that chases the bike. Unfortunetly I don't have a digital camera so I can't send any pictures.
They looked like they still had some work to do today so I don't think they have started filming anything yet. I didn't see Woo or
Cruise there today so maybe they'll be down there tomorow.
I'll keep you appraised.
By the way on one of the entertainment shows down here they mentioned that the story involved Cruise's character searching for a
deadly virus.
Cya.
Dan.

Isn't Mission Impossible supposed to be about espionage? They are teams of SECRET agents after all. So why the hell would you want to make an all out, over the top action film for a Mission Impossible film? The first film fell a little short because it was too heavy on the action and not enough on the clever devices and espionage. That is the same problem with the more recent Bond films, only even more so. With those films it seems like the story is just there to lead you to the next stunt or chase scene. I love John Woo's early films, but ever since he came to America and got a budget he seems to depend too much on explosions and flash, rather than the ingenuity that made his early action films stand out. I don't think that he is the right choice for a Mission Impossible film. The thing that I always liked about Mission Impossible was that it was about using espionage and technology to acomplish the tasks. Just cranking out another blow 'em up over the top action film in John Woo's inferior big studio manner andcalling it Mission Impossible doesn't seem right. It's not delivering on what the name promises. Well the least they could do is bring back Jean Reno.

Gorgar is first, but who will be last?? who i ask?? oh, and didnt john woo direct teen wolf? no? remember that girly in it? her character was named "Boof" i always took that to mean she was into the buttlove. id like to see her in MI2.
-
regarding Jean Reno, i'm not sure about the fatality rates of helicopter-bomb interfaces but i'm sure they ain't too high....
-
I suggest you go back and watch the original Mission Impossible. If there's one thing about it I'd complain about, it's that it had almost no action. Think about it, I'd hardly call the sequence when everyone on the team dies at the beginning 'action'. The only real action scene is the end on the train. As far as the original being confusing to some, I don't understand. Everything was practically spelled out for the viewers. Are these the same people who were confused by "Ronin"?
-
Wasn't that movie supposed to come out like a year ago? I've been eagerly awaiting a Woo/Yun Fat team up for years. I think John Woo could do more justice to the material than De Palma. MI2 could put the original to shame if they don't rush the hell out of it.
-
Mr. Gorgar; please inform us when the anniversary is of your lobotomy; we'll toast on it.
-
did somebody just say toast
-
Some people found the MI1 plot too confusing? Hmmm... Must be the same people that can't figure out why Jar-Jar is funny. I thought it was pretty straight forward. I had it figured out as soon as Phelps showed up at the phone booth. But somehow I think John Woo will go more for the action than the who-done-it in this one -- at least within the confines of the screenplay. Woo rocks!
-
Oh YES! Finally! Another two hours of pointless crap! Hurrah. The plots to follow in these films are like working the kid's maze on the back of a Cocoa Pebbles box. In fact...now that you mention it, I'd rather help Dino find his way home through the maze than watch another Mission Impossible movie. At least with Cocoa Pebbles you get a toy and a cool game or two; with Mission Impossible you get the feeling someone just used you for six bucks. End Transmission.
-
You go boy! I needed a chuckle, it's way to early in the morning for serious intellectual dissertations on the quality (or lack thereof) of the MI movies. I think these talk backs have become too serious anyways. In order to find a solution to most debates we'd just have to ask most of these geeks to whip it out and measure it, if you know what I'm saying. If you don't check out the debate in the Hellboy area between Robogeek and another guy!

I thought Tommy Boy was being a major pain on this film, screwing poor John Woo over at every opportunity. Woo getting Cruise to do his own stunts doesn't sound like there's much friction. Sounds more like Woo kicked his ass around a trailer for ten minutes and told him it was Woo's way or Tom would be dropped into the ocean chained to a motorcycle. I can't wait to see this one.
-
The first one sucked, John Woo was cool before he started making movies in the US, and....that's all I have to say. But I hope it rocks.
-
I guess that it shows how much of an impression the first film left on me when I forget that Jean Reno died at the end. Yes I do think that the film had too much action, because that is all the last fifteen minutes of it was. How many episodes of the TV show just broke down into mindless action for their big pay offs? It was always about espionage, not just action. Woo is wrong for this film. Action should not be the focus of this film. And finally, deadly virus?!? Give me a break.
-
i think its great that there will be more action-the first film(which i liked, don't get me wrong) could have done with it. john woo was a great choice for director-i just hope he won't cut down on the espionage side
-
John Woo is the perfect director for Mission:Impossible 2. This guy is for action, what God is for religion. All he needs is a good script and final cut, something he didn't have on his worst movie Hard Target. Just blame Jean-Claude for that one. An important thing is that he needs to take charge and don't let Cruise push him around. Remeber that Cruise thought about resolving the scene in the boxcar; De Palma was pushing for the helicopter chase. Imagine the trailer without that sequence. If De Palma didn't take a stand, the movie would've bombed. Expect the impossible; A sequel that is better than the original.
-
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE is one of the best action films of the 1990s. The break-in scene was more sweat-inducing and edge-of-your-seat than anything I've seen in an action film in a long time. While the script is sometimes confusing (it took me two viewings to grasp what was going on--and I STILL don't fully understand it), the action sequences and direction make up for it. Now I'm not a Tom Cruise fan by any stretch of the imagination, and I only saw MI because it was directed by Brian De Palma, and it co-starred Jon Voight. Double coolness right there. I was surprised that this film exceeded my expectations, and now rank it among my favorites. Cruise gives a great performance, as does his team (although they only appear onscreen for a short time--only De Palma could take a well-known actress like Kristin Scott Thomas, and kill her off within the first twenty minutes of the picture). This is a very cool movie.

John Woo rocks the fucking world, and anyone who disagrees can send me an e-mail (theproffessional@hotmail.com), and I will tell them to suck my nuts! Oh, sorry just venting my rage against all you unruly motherfuckers out there. In my opinion John Woo has never made a bad movie (we're not even going to bring up Hard Target). I just saw The Killer last night and it is and was the greatest action movie ever made. The great thing is, he makes you care about the characters, not just about the bullet orgasms. I think MI2 will rock the fucking house. It won't be a traditonal spy movie, so don't expect that. It'll be a John Woo movie, which will make it good. And even if it sucks, well...all us Woo fans will just blame it one the studio or Tom Cruise.
P.S. I've decided to make at least one post on some story once a day. Why...CAUSE I CAN!!!! -
Thank you, yojimbo, for explaining exactly how I felt at the end of MI. I liked it in the same way I liked The Matrix but felt the script was too convoluted for the plot! (Not Matrix, MI! I liked them for their action sequences, ahh, hell, I've lost my train of thought, but, wait, I don't have a brain).
-
Woo rocks!!!!!!people who say he doesn't should see face/off sometimes(slo-mo, kick ass action, some plot, good actors)i think he is perfect for this movie. anothe choice i can think of for MI2 are those GENIUS brothers, who made Matrix ( that is the next sequel i'm waiting for). anyway, the problem with the MI was that people expected a more complicated plot, but it was simple and they just didn't buy it through the movie. the plot was simple, but the break-in scene WAS COOL!!! i pray MI2 will rock.
-
so I'll say the abridged version briefly again. Mission: Impossible has yielded to me in tthe four times I've viewed it, the realization that's it really, really good. And in my book, it had virtually no action. But I don't think a few jumping motarcylces and a virus will be out of place in a sequel. Let a better man try his different slant on things (that said, De Palma did a great job on MI, as did everyone). I hope Danny Elfman delivers a great score. Or second-best, have Hans Zimmer do a great one.
-
I have never heard anyone put MI into a better light... I've been trying to defend my thinking it was "confusing" since the minute after the movie ended. I perfectly understood what happened, but I had no idea WHY it happened. So, I've been dealing with people calling me stupid and what-not, even though I can explain to them all the intricacies of a Terry Gilliam flick. Again, well spoken.
-
The thing with Mission Impossible and the movie that will follow, is that they are super cool action spy movies, kinda Bondish, but with more an American feel and less that British uppityness. But with Woo behind the helm you know there are gonna be some kick ass action sequences including tons of slo-mo and a whole lot of whoop ass fighting. I don't is Tommy ready, he's been humping Nicole for so long he may forget what it's like to go through the rigors of filming an action piece. Although I guess between now and then he'll have done some other projects. Oh well here's keeping your fingers crossed. Cheers!!
-
Why can't fanboys wipe the nutsack sweat from their chins and be critical of their heros? I like John Woo. John Woo's Hong Kong films are among the best action films around, but his American films have really sucked so far. Hard Boiled, The Killer, and the uncut A Better Tomarrow, are great, but Face Off and Broken Arrow don't even register as good movies, let alone to the standard of his earlier films.
On another topic...MI was not, by any means, a bad film. It had a lot of cool espionage aspects, but I was very let down by the action film ending. That made me lose interest in it. It shouldn't be an action film. With John Woo in control it will be mainly an action film. The true meaning of Mission Impossible will be pushed aside for big stunts, and bigger explosions. I like Woo, but I like films in general a great deal more, so I am willing to admit that he is not right for MI. He would be making movies to satisfy his fans anyways so it is a shame for it to ruin a Mission Impossible film in the process. I can only hope that I am wrong, and it is great, but it sure doesn't look that way. -
All you folks had better watch what you say about Tom Cruise. You just might find yourself with a lawsuit on your hands... :)
BTW, Mission: Impossible was not hard to understand. It was over-plotted, yes, but not so much so that you couldn't follow it.
