BATMAN BEGINS Producer + EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Screenwriter = ROBOTECH Movie?? Seems So...

Published at:  Jun 16, 2008 8:33:52 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Last week, CHUD sources said that Lawrence Kasdan would be scripting Toby Maguire's ROBOTECH project (HEREZ) - which has now been confirmed in THIS Hollywood Reporter article.

The HR piece also reveals that Chuck Roven (BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, and AFRO SAMURAI)and Akiva Goldsman have fallen into place as producers.

You can find more about ROBOTECH HERE (click "an Introduction to ROBOTECH").

THEY COULD JUST ADAPT THE MACROSS MOVIE... =0)

by the marquis de side 3

the series was long and you really connected with the characters. but for sake of time and length, they could easily adapt the structure of the Macross movie. what wold really be important is to capture the inner yearning of each character -- conveying that loneliness and sadness that was in the original film and series. if the heart is conveyed, then the structure doesn't matter. they have to tell the story to audiences unfamiliar to MACROSS/ROBOTECH. as long as the heart of the story comes across, like the original MACROSS film did, then they should succeed.

but then again, if you didn't like the MACROSS movie, then it will be even tougher than expected to turn this into a movie, or even at least two films.

the Star Wars prequels or the latest Indiana Jones film? Didn't Kasdan take up directing in the later years, or was that former Star Wars alum Joe Johnston, or perhaps both did? Either way, if he's still scripting, it would have been somewhat of a boost to have him back. But, let's be realistic, there's no guarantee that he would have delivered another Raiders or ESB. Just like Lucas, Spielberg, or the John Williams of the world aren't going to have hit after hit every time they release something. Oh well. just a bit of wishful L. Kasdan thinking.

    Lawrence Kasdan can't write.

    by nodiggity

He is, however, a VERY good director. He can direct the hell out of nonsense and make it feel like it makes sense somehow (prime example: The Big Chill, which he wrote and directed). The hero writer of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK was Leigh Brackett. Lucas said he threw out her script, but his co-producer Gary Kurtz says that the final script was essentially the same as Brackett's. Kasdan probably just wrote in some of the dopey "banter" in the movie between Leia and Han.

I have read that Lucas did not in fact keep Leigh Brackett's script, but as a courtesy to her, he gave her billing because of her death right after she wrote her treatment. I get the impression that Lawrence Kasdan did in fact handle the bulk of the Empire Strikes Back writing, and his billing on Raiders of the Lost Ark would seem to help support that- since these are both the two most well written movies that George Lucas created. So in fact Lawrence Kasdan seems not only to be able to write, but write better in my oppinion than anyone ever has in Holywood. IMHO.

It'll be Robotech with bits of Macross Plus and Zero in there... $10 says we'll see Sharon Apple in some shape or form at some point during this movie... Considering everything's all so fucked up they might as well write their own story based on the Robotech cartoon's plot and sprinkle bits of fan service portions for the Macross fans. Anyway you bet you ass they're planning a trilogy out of this!As for Akira, despite that I hate the fact it's moving from Japan to America, I hear they're planning two movies that will cover the entire original manga, not the anime version. And if that's so and they give it the crazy budget and effects work it deserves, then baby I'm all for seeing that spectacle on screen! I just hope they do the right thing and realize that Akira is Rated a hard R!

    by bubcus

Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, and Minmei, along with the SDF1 and Veritechs, etc made Robotech gold and the traditional animation was fantastic (with some exceptions of course).

We tried watching the Shadow Chronicles and the CG irritated us deeply (alongside the story and wooden personalities).

Every time I hear of a movie being made based on this or that, it comes across as a crap fan film with a budget. Don't mess with Robotech unless you're going to give us some personality to it.

I do revere Lawrence Kasdan and hope he can pull off a stellar script. I'm just crossing my fingers this'll be even remotely worthwhile....

That's questionable. It might work depending on the way the rest of the film comes together. Also, forget Do You Remember Love, which only works if you're already familiar with the original series, and just barely at that. It's beautiful to look at but too disjointed. If these guys are smart they'll overview the first dozen or so episodes and save the full scale war effort/ fate of the earth stuff for the sequels.

The first time I see a Valkyrie or Veratech, whatever, go full robot mode I swear I'm gonna geekgasm. Not to mention seeing the city inside SDF-1 changing and contorting as the ship takes on its defensive mode. Man, the possibilities if done right. And PLEASE let the fan reaction to transformers be a lesson, make the mecha look the way we grew up with it, The Val, Alpha, Beta, Cyclones, etc is truly badass designs, please don't go Bayformers on them. So no Sharon Apple, no Zero, no Frontier, not even a Fire Valkyrie with a face and a guitar. The Robotech Pitfall

    by knuckleface

Having written a fan-screenplay for a hypothetical Macross film (see above), I feel I should warn Kasdan about one major pitfall: Minmei's songs. If you give her some typical Celine/Mirah/Britney-style pop clap-track, the whole audience will either groan or fall into hysterics when the Zentradi react to her music. This is an incredibly important plot point, but one that must be dealt with delicately. I have the answer, but you'll have to pay me for it.

I know its not going to happen, I know that the Robotech movie we will get will most likely be completely unrecognizable (RINO?), but I f*ckin' LOVE that movie so much. I seriously, seriously doubt that the "J-Pop is so cute the Zentradi can't stand it and go nuts or switch sides" plot point is going to survive in the live-action movie. sorry Macross fans... I'm one myself.

    by goodguy

I read post after post hoping for a great Macross movie. You guys gotta realize that Harmony Gold licensed the ORIGINAL Macross series, NOT all future Macross properties. You're not gonna see Sharon Apple, or Do You Remember Love. Big West has been creating new Macross for 25 yrs in Japan. THEY OWN IT. Harmony Gold licensed the series, Super Dimension Fortress Macross in 84 with the rights to sell it, merchandise it and broadcast it. The agreement is public record - http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ06.pdf - order it and read for yourself. They can't create new Macross or remake it. They don't own the designs. And the bottom line is, Warner Bros will not make a movie that can't be seen in Japanese theaters. Harmony Gold's license EXCLUDES Japan. Since the Americanized bastardized "Macross Saga" and the original Japanese Macross cannot coexist in Japan, there will be no mention of Macross and no Kawamori designs. So, here are the possibilities... An origin story that deals with some dude named Rick Hunter who flies a transforming fighter that looks nothing like a Valkerie, or a Shadow Chronicles movie that is based on an entirely different anime. Unfortunately, Harmony Gold's tenuous and mysterious grasp of the Macross name makes it more than likely impossible for even Big West to make a live action Macross movie that could be seen OUTSIDE of Japan. Thanks, Harmony Gold.

Do you see WB sharing profits on this movie as a Macross movie in Japan? I don't. And since it won't resemble Macross in design, it wouldn't work with a Macross title anyway. WB will make a movie that plays everywhere including Japan. That means no Macross. But the posts keep coming!! Who will play Minmay?! Brad Pitt for Roy Fokker! Jesus. The rights aren't cleared up. Tatsunoko Productions is either unwilling or unable to shake Harmony Gold off. And Big West is doing fine without the original series.

This could be great if they go epic and dark. That means more of a horror angle for episode 1 which would deal with the alien invasion and the massive destruction that ensues. If instead they go the teenie-bopper campy action flick route like Transformers and Wing Commander it will blow chunks.

They could have allot of fun with Minmay(sp?). Minmay is that hot, bubbly chick who is super nice to everyone even though she's a spoiled brat. She can barely help being manipulative because she doesnt do it on a conscious level. It's just that by being flirtatious and bubbly and happy has always resulted in her getting anything she wanted. Unfortunately every guy around her can't help but pick up false romantic signals from her. Rick realizes eventually that deep down she's self centered, spoiled and shallow. In the end she's a tragic figure... sort of like Britney Spears. Everyone winds up being a casualty of this war in one way or another. Roy had already been hardened and desensitized by earlier war, and over the trilogy Rick will see himself changing into his brother but perhaps having learned from him and not making all of the same mistakes he did.

Hrm WAIT.. this is sort of reminding me of Starship Troopers and the love triangle there. Well, Starship Troopers wasn't all bad. I enjoyed the satirical nature of it all, but hopefully Robotech will go the dark epic route.

They reincarnated Leigh Brackett for another robot toon?

    by s00p3rm4n

    Well I'll be hot damned.

(P.S. The majority of the Empire film was taken from Leigh Brackett's brilliant first-draft script. She turned it in a week before she died. Show some goddamn respect.)

    by johnno

I don't believe there'll be anything keeping one from doing so... As for Minmei's songs and performances, just outright copy a bit of what Macross Frontier is currently doing with Cheryl! A techno cyber style FX performance. And have the music be similar to the style of what Kanno did for Macross Plus! The techno hypnotic Sharon Apple tracks along with nice vocal and piano melodies of Myung! So do the right thing Hollywood and get Yoko Kanno or at least someone that will do something similar to Macross Plus' soundtrack!!!

    by lt. kaffee

but i only ever liked the macross part of it. i was so young then that i didn't even understand what had happened with the whole "second generation", "third generation" thing. I remember thinking, "hey, there's the SDF-1 and bad ass rick hunter in his veritech in the opening credits... now why is the episode about some blonde chick w/ crappy tank mecha?" yeah, thats all i got. hope they figure out a unique way to spin all the animation rights stuff into a good movie.

    Let's be real here.

    by kurutteru yatsu

Hollywood can barely get well known American animation/comic properties to the big screen with their souls intact. Asking that something based off an anime or manga be done justice, especially in the case of the murky legalities surrounding Robotech/Macross, it's just a bridge too far. Here's a question, though: What's the status on Southern Cross and Mospeada? Insane though it might be, could they conceivably just say fuck it to the Macross part of the story and work with what's left?

    southern and mospeada

    by goodguy

pretty sure Harmony Gold has a better deal on those two. That's why you see Cyclones and Alphas in the Shadow Chronicles. I didn't see any Valkeries though. Or an SDF1. Now, how in the hell are you gonna show me a flashback of the crucial moments of the SDF1 coming to Earth, and NOT show me the ship? Really? A STAR falls to Earth? And then there's a tech room with scientists standing around? No Valkeries in the workshop? No Rick Hunter flying into the middle of an air show? This IS the guy that ends up ADMIRAL of the fleet. No climactic battle with the Zentradi and Dolza? No mention of Zentradi? They're just generically referred to as "ALIENS"? They don't have the rights to create new Macross. Period. It'll be an origin story about a space ship that comes to Earth and two hotshot pilots that fend off the attacking aliens. Nobody has that concept copyrighted. But you won't see the word Macross, and you won't see Kawamori designs.

    Right, I get that.

    by kurutteru yatsu

Hence the question: Despite knowing full well they would make the Macross fans scream bloody murder, could they make a Robotech film that has the Cyclones and Alpha/Beta fighters, have them fight the Invid, and pretend the rest of it doesn't really matter or even perhaps exist? "Rick Hunter? Lisa Hayes? Never heard of 'em. Now, have you met my good friends Scott Bernard and Dana Sterling...?" Because let's face it, no matter how pissed the people pulling for a Macross movie would be, they'd probably break down and go see Robotech anyway. I mean fuck, look at all the money Michael Bay made with an Optimus Prime who utters lines like "My bad" and a mute, pissing Bumblebee... *shudder*

About Lucas throwing out Brackett's Script ...

    by nodiggity

... think about it. He says that he gave her credit, out of respect for her when she died, but that he really threw the whole script away? What's the point of honoring her with a script credit if he's going to take it away by saying "She really contributed nothing" afterwards? Lucas has a long history of minimizing the contributions of practically everyone who worked with him, and exaggerating his personal involvement in everything. And we see what sort of films he produces when he achieves ACTUAL personal control over everthing, as he managed to do in the prequels. Back then, he didn't really have that control, even though he WANTED it, and freaked out when he found out things had gotten away from his "vision". Lucas's idea of a script being "completely thrown out" I suspect, is to superficially rearrange many of the elements in it so he can feel he is the one "creating" it. And since Gary Kurts (his co-producer and often co-director on Star Wars and Empire) says that the final draft was basically the same as Brackett's (contradicting Lucas) I think we can safely doubt Lucas's word on this.

Did Brackett's draft of Empire ever see publication in any of Lucas's official history of Star Wars guides? Because that would be a genuine way of respecting her, wouldn't it?

As far as SDC Southern Cross and MOSEPADA go

    by godmars

Harmony Gold has full rights with these series. SDC Southern Cross did not do well in Japan at all, and was a series that was cut short. MOSPEADA had some success and had a follow up OVA, and as we've seen, Harmony Gold has used it as the basis for their future Robotech productions. I'd expect to see them follow the MOSPEADA storyline.

    by goodguy

HG owns the last two like Godmars said. As the Shadow Chronicles clearly shows, to fan's great disappointment and confusion, HG goes out of its way to steer clear of any Macross element. Even when flashing back to the events of Macross to educate newcomers- which is the entire point of flashing back! They've been selling their licensed Macross series on dvd in 7 different incarnations for years because it's the first and most popular chapter of Robotech. It's their cash cow. I'd love to hear someone's explanation for why they wouldn't take this opportunity- the first original sequel of Robotech since it aired- to create new kick ass animation of Veritechs, Hunter, Focker and the SDF1 to take advantage of that same cow.

Anything Harmony Gold does animation wise...

    by johnno

Will pale in comparison to the quality of work in shows like Zero and Frontier... Seriously in this department the Japanese animation shits over everything. I hated the style of Shadow Chronicles, but the fanboy child in me adored the movie just to see Scott and Marlene (Ariel) united... Anyway as for the whole Macross business, I'm sure it can be resolved if Hollywood throws some money around to every party so they can shut the fuck up and let them do what they want. Give the Macross folks a Japan a nice cut of the Japanese theaterical pie and I'm sure they'll allow the use of Kawamori's designs and names...

Throw some money around? You're kidding yourself dude. I've got pals at WB AND BIG WEST that tell me there are absolutely no talks between them. But that's obviously my word, and you don't know me from Adam. So that aside, why would you think for one second that WB would pay a goddamn nickel to Big West to use the name "Macross" and Kawamori's designs, when they can call it ROBOTECH and design their own shitty robots? Your love for the original material is MEANINGLESS to them. And what makes you think the Japanese would sell their souls to have the bastards at Harmony Gold come into their Japanese theaters with an Americanized version of their property? Think about that. You're hoping WB is feeling generous with a Japanese studio who's been in legal battles for 25 yrs, and that the Japanese will allow TWO versions of Macross in Japan for a payday.

    by goodguy

I get such a kick out of the casting calls. Emile Hirsch as Rick Hunter! Edward James Olmos as Gloval! A) the only reason you guys had these strokes of genius is because you've seen them both play these exact roles already! B) Do you really want to see Adama as Captain Gloval or Speed as Rick Hunter? Jesus, where's the creativity in that? C) Why the hell do you think these actors or their representatives would allow them to be cast in roles that are identical to ones they've just played?! D) Toby Maguire is producing and starring. He will play Hunter or Scott Bernard.

I don't mind them going with Robotech...

    by johnno

I grew up with Robotech, not Macross... But I do love Macross now too every since Plus. I'm just supposing that if there are some die hard fans at WB working on this that they might consider that route. Otherwise I'm all well and good with them calling it Robotech (I think they should title the film that anyway in the first place). But to appease the fans I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to at least toss some money for just the names like 'Macross SDF-1' and 'Veritech'. In fact they can redesign them without strict adherence to the original designs. Basically I'm all well and good seeing something akin to modern day fighter jets transforming into robots. The only consistency that matters to me is that they be white and we get the good ol' skull fighter as one of them. They can come up with their own designs that are close enough without infringing on anything. But you do bring up a good point on the Japanese side... Introducing Robotech in their country alongside the already well established Macross franchise would be retarded.

    I admire your enthusiasm Johnno

    by goodguy

I'm a dreamer too. But let's be real. There are no Robotech fans at WB. They're SUITS. They don't have a goddamn creative bone in their bodies. And if they did, it would take a back seat to the rest of the bones that favor the bottom line. The bottom line is how much they SPEND to make this movie and how much it PROFITS when it comes out. You don't start a process like that by paying somebody for something like designs when you can design new ones yourself. Hell, they don't need ANOTHER reason to redesign. They do that anyway. And I don't think you'll see much white utilized in the designs, but what do I know. Sure as hell, the flightsuits won't be white with pretty colored trim to indicate who's who.

and Johnno, I mean using the name Macross in reference to a city or the ship. The title will obviously be ROBOTECH, but they won't be able to have a Macross Island. Of course, they'll rewrite it so the SDF1 crashes in NY or some shit anyway. Some SUIT will make that decision.

    Mospeada

    by hikaru ichijo

From what I'm hearing, this movie is probably a good opportunity for HG to further establish the Legioss/Alpha Fighter as the primary mecha for the entire series. I can envision a total reboot in which the Valkyrie never exists, and I don't think that will greatly effect the film. That is, as long as we get something of the spirit of the source material. I wonder if Carl Macek will get brought on board somehow. One good thing about this movie happening will be the incentive to get more Macross material legally distributed in the states. You know, in a "strike while the iron is hot" kind of way.

    by goodguy

I think Macek is producing in some part. Don't see how a Robotech movie brings Macross into the states though. Why would Harmony Gold decide suddenly that Japanese Macross in no longer a conflict of interest? They gotta keep it down so it doesn't get confused with their "Macross Saga". And since they're not entitled to any profit from Japanese Macross, they have no reason to allow it.

    Good point, goodguy, but...

    by hikaru ichijo

as awareness of Macross (as the inspiration for Robotech) moves further into the realm of the general public, I don't see how they (whoever that turns out to be) can avoid introducing Macross Zero/ 7/ Frontier, et al, to the new fan base that will result. Maybe that's wishful thinking. I admit I don't have a complete understanding of the complicated rights issues surrounding Macross, but I do see more Macross happening in Japan all the time. HG might try to prevent domestic distribution of said materials, then again they might figure out how to cash in on it in some way. Hell, I'd settle for some serious shades of gray at a Comicon Dealer's booth at this point. My DYRL dub is on it's last leg.

    Harmony Gold

    by goodguy

Hikaru, Harmony Gold are well known for their Cease and Desist orders. If they had their way, the Japanese Macross would NEVER exist outside of Japan because it's NOT THEIRS. See, they lucked into this sweet property when Tatsunoko figured they could make a few hundred thousand dollars off it in 84. The Japanese had no way of knowing anime would blow up like it did. And Big West who holds the copyright on Macros characters and designs is the party that really suffers. And the fans of course. Nobody except Tatsunoko and Harmony Gold know how long the license is good for. Harmony Gold can't have Macross fans buying current Macross in the States. There's no way to profit from it, and it's in direct conflict with their bastardized "Macross Saga". How could they profit? THEY DON'T OWN IT. They licensed the original series- NOT THE ENTIRE FUTURE OF THE MACROSS PROPERTY. There's no figuring. There's no bargaining. There's no deals. Money isn't an issue anymore. There's so much bad blood and distrust between them now, they'll never agree to profit from the same property. So what you're going to have to do is get on ebay and order the bootlegs of the specific Macross titles you want.

How good are English subs on import Japanese DVDs? Good? Honestly a neat solution would be if the Japanese companies themselves make an English dub for it and encourage importation, I'm sure plenty of online sites and anime convention and comic stores will find backdoor ways to get the product into fan's hands. Or so I'd wish...

    dubs

    by goodguy

Two things wrong with your theory, Johnno. 1) The Japanese aren't going to go to the trouble and expense of dubbing into English in hopes that online sites and anime conventions will think of some tricky yet illegal way of getting the product into fans hands. 2) The online sites and retailers that hit these anime conventions are the very ones that are hit with Cease and Desist orders by Harmony Gold. They can't have current Macross that they don't profit from drawing interest away from their Americanized "Macross Saga". It's just not good business. In my experience, the dubbing on the imports is usually crap. Subtitles aren't all that great either. Personally, I'm happy to watch and listen to it the way it was created- for the Japanese audience.
