Is It Possible To Make Good A Dragon Movie Anymore?? And, Can Universal Make One Out Of DRAGONOLOGY??
Merrick here...
I haven't read these books, so my knowledge of the source material is limited. This said, Universal has acquired the rights to the DRAGONOLOGY books by Dugald A. Steer (I smell a pseudonym - am I right?)
The faux nonfiction books by Dugald A. Steer are based on the conceit that dragons actually exist as revealed by the Victorian dragonologist Ernest Drake. An underlying theme is that dragons should be studied and revered in the same way as any rare species.
Hartman's fantasy adventure take revolves around a group of dragonologists who go on a globetrotting quest to keep a corrupt man from taking control of the world's dragons and using them to wipe out humanity.
...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter.
As far as I'm concerned, there hasn't been an even vaguely passable dragon movie since DRAGONSLAYER back in 1981 (elements of REIGN OF FIRE were okay, but I don't think the whole sustained). The highest profile of recent attempts to make a dragon film...D-WARS (DRAGON WARS)...was awkward, bewildering, and just plain dopey. So, I think it's fair to ask...as far as films go...is their any juice left in this conceit? And, why is it so damn hard to make a bad-ass dragon movie?
Leonard Hartman will write & Executive Produce the adaptation.

Or however it's spelled. You know, the "Her majesty's dragon" book and screenplay. Well, what about, AICN-meisters?
-
...where's the love for DRAGONHEART...my wife says she can't watch that movie ever again...so so sad...
-
...will be THE HOBBIT
-
oh i mean seventh!
-
i mean eighth :(
-
will have a bad-ass dragon in it. We've already seen CG dragons, so now we'll need a good story to back up the "been there already done that" dragon effects.
-
We actually had this conversation at work not long ago. Dragonheart, Reign of Fire, (is The Neverending Story a Dragon movie? Falcor IS a dragon.), Tales of the Earthsea...
There are also dragons in Spirited Away, Beowulf and Shrek, but then these are probably not "dragon movies".
Oh and then there's Eragon. But we don't talk about that, right? -
i heard Pete Jackson was going to do that, but that was years ago.i haven't read them, but the premise is cool enough.

and 3d
-
I'd like to see at least the first book made into a movie
-
not the greatest movies of course but lots of fun as a kid. Thought the dragon looked fantastic
-
I like that movie. Every dragon should sound like Connery.
-
that film wasnt bad
-
To be 19th!
-
It could have used some dragons though.
-
It would be better than Lord of the Rings. Yes, I said it.
-
It's that mistakes can be corrected. And I want Fox to realize that so they can make "Eldest" and "Brisingr", without Fangemeier and with a better editor that won't leave the important parts out of the film. Just don't change the actors.
-
Because, one they're lazy. People think all you need for a good dragon movie is a cool looking dragon. Two, because people have completely forgotten what makes a good dragon. If you have a movie based around dragons where not one dragon actually talks, you have a pretty shit dragon movie. They're supposed to be smart, and while you're at it, a fantasy dragon should be pretty damn magical, not just a big fire-breathing reptile. Hell, I would love to see a D&D style wise old sorcerer dragon in the modern day, ala Shadowrun. But no, Hollywood, I guess that's "too thinky" or something.
-
I have got the OLOGY books for a few kids. They are more like an exhibit at a kids museum, with a few cheap gift shop trinkets thron in. So will it just be the name slaped on a script?
-
By far.
-
Vermithrax is the greatest dragon to grace any film ever.
-
...it'll be game over, man. Game over. I'm on Book 3 of that Termeraire/His Majesty's Dragon series, I know Peter Jackson bought the rights to it, it's like MASTER & COMMANDER crossed with LORD OF THE RINGS with a touch of PIRATES OF CARIBBEAN in it's fun and lighter momentsWould love to see a Dragonlance movie, but I doubt they'll do it right.Of course the "winning" dragon so far is Vermithrax from DRAGONSLAYER.
-
That should be the title for this movie.

Didn't Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey already star in th
by tvguy4566
It sounds kinda Reign of Fire-ish to me. I do agree that Reign of Fire would have been much better if there were more dragons. Fighting one dragon at a time made it it more realistic (well assuming dragons were real), but didn't really help the movie to be more entertaining.
-
Wonderful book(s), it should be turned into a movie like now. Jackson instead decided to punt in line "Lovely Bones" (that i can0t wait to see, btw) a stupid "Tin Tin" movie, which no one in the world wants to see and "The Hobbit" movie (as a producer) which I don't care about.
I really hope that Temeraire will be the next flick He'll work on. -
...and poor design. The dragons always end up looking like dinosaurs-on-cosmic-rays, mutant dinos. Boring. The dragon in Dragonslayer, on the other hand, looked like something out of a medieval engraving.
-
He he he.
-
...will an average American audience buy into alternative history?" They already do that anyway when they go to church or visit the Creation Museum
-
Dragonslayer ruled. Everything else ranged from noble-attempt to crap.
-
... would make for a great trilogy of dragon films. Peter Jackson holds the rights, and I'm sure he'll get around to making it at some point, he only obtained the rights about a year ago - these things take time.
-
Yes man, I agree. If they could take the Chronicles and Legends trilogies and turn them into movies, with the same care that was used on LOTR, these movies would be the best.
The only D&D movies that would need to be made. Great stories.
They tried to make the first book into a cartoon released earlier this year and it SUCKED! Had Keifer Sutherland voicing Raistlin so that was cool though. But yeah, those stories need care put into them. -
I was referring to Dragonlance, in case anyone was wondering. Go buy the books!!! ha
-
I remember catching that flick on a whim with a couple of mates after work, and we were totally entertained by it. Really fun watching Bale and McConaughey trying to out-torso each other, but as a female, I didn't mind... ;D The dragons were pretty good too if I remember. There've been great dragons in non-dragon movies - Spirited Away was just wonderful, but I was underwhelmed by the Beowulf dragon. He was always scarier in the poem. But I agree, Smaug should be awesome.
-
There was a cartoon movie called THE FLIGHT OF DRAGONS back in the Eighties that I enjoyed (don't know if it holds up now though). Like others I also thought that the BEOWULF dragon was pretty decent.
-
Come on, that movie was hilarious!
-
Anne McCaffrey's Dragons of Pern books, especially the earlier ones, would be excellent. And this is science fiction, not fantasy material. Genetically engineered lizards, telepathic bonds, lots of sex....what's not to like?
-
have you ever needed your dragon cut open
-
There's a dragon story written by Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom called 'The Fable of the Dragon Tyrant'. It's used as a metaphor for arguing the moral imperative to cure the aging process through science, which is well underway with projects like SENS already attracting millions of dollars annually for research
Well worth a read, and I love a movie with a metaphor, especially one so important. Maybe someone will option it one of these days.
Here's a link (remove spaces): http://www.nickbostrom.com/fable/dragon.html -
'Heartbreak Kid'. At least I figured it was a dragon movie. Some kind of monster swooped in and fire blasted Ben Stiller's career and dropped a turd named Carlos Mencia in the middle of production.
-
Why izzit they always have to have some evil guy trying to control something that allows him to take over the world? Didn't they do that in the first D&D movie?
That's like saying, 'I'm going to control all the elephants in the world! Bwaaa Haaa Haaa!"
Besides Disney's Dragonslayer, the best dragon movie was that fictional documentary about the history of dragons that was on the Discovery channal last year. -
I tried watching the Dragonlance animated movie...still trying to make my way through it. I havenn't seen animation that bad since the early 80's But a big budget live action version...it has everything. Dragons all over the place, good and bad, bad ass motherfuckers with big ass swords, a real tangible villain unlike LOTR and Raistlin would be this generation's Darth Vader. And it has an actual story and much more interesting characters than LOTR. But it won't happen. Unless I, a lowly editor get enough clout in the industry to make it happen. Yeah, right.
-
But my kids were bought the board game for Christmas and it's boring as all fuck-ology
-
but with dragons.
-
Yeah, in your lackluster dreams.I thought the Dragonslayer dragon was great as well as the biggie in Reign of Fire. Of course, Smaug will rule all when it comes out. Bow down before the Greatest And Chiefest of Calamities!
-
best dragon flick by far. the old animated Rakin & Bass Hobbit was great but i guess it doesn't count huh?
-
had bad ass design. and i love the color/size distinction.
-
written and directed by Todd McFarlane.do it.
-
Idris the dragon was also great.
-
He could turn invisible!
-
was a great movie. i had the Fisher Price record (yes, the vinyl record) that would read along with the storybook."turn the page, when you hear the chimes ring, like this..."
-
Hell yeah it would be better than Lord of the Rings. I realize there would be no Drganlance if it wasn't for LOTR. But Dragonlance has a much deeper story and more interesting characters than some midgets trying to throw a ring into a volcano.
-
I just finished reading Michael Swanwick's "The Iron Dragon's Daughter" last week, quite the mind-fuck that book. You could make a truly bizarre masterpiece adapting that book to the screen, except that the budget you'd need to pull it off decently would lead to meddling suits doing everything they can to screw it up.
-
Admittedly, it's not ABOUT dragons, but dragons feature prominently in two of the movies, and the last movie is most likely going to have one, too...
-
The last dragon movie I've seen before (or since) Reign of Fire was Dragonslayer, which I doubt holds up very well.
-
Best Dragon Ever.
-
I liked Dragonslayer but I found most of the other Dragon movies to be un-interesting or unsatisfying. I loved Spirited Away but it isnt really a Dragon Movie.
-
Dragon slayer holds up very well, especially the dragon which is still the greatest dragon in movie history.
-
slone13, to many beers cant type
-
I will have to check it out again. I've always found it amusing that Peter MacNicol went on to play the little nerdy guy on Ally McBeal...
-
I thought it could have been better, but I still liked it. The final dragon fight kicked ass.
-
Yes slone13 its the only two things i have ever seen him in.
He was more suited to nerd than a dragonslayer lol -
I'll shout it in these message forums until the end of my days.
-
That dragon was badass.
-
If Hobbit will be considered a "dragon movie," then it will take the title from Dragonslayer. But a well-executed series of six Dragonlance films would put all dragon movies in their place for all time.
-
Isn't the one out now already starring a bunch of old dragons?
-
it was very good and convincing. even though "they" say theyre not real. i believe. cause i'm awesome.
-
25 years old. hooray!
-
dragon cartoon from 1982.
-
I want Peter Jackson and the Naomi Novik books! Those could kick some serious ass. The battle scenes would be mind-blowing. Did somebody say they would be better than LotR? Because that would be a stupid thing to say -- LotR kicked ass. What's important is that they'd be different, and they'd be their own thing. And they would also kick ass.
-
Haven't read those. They'd probably look a lot like LotR. Still, hell, sure why not? Somebody take a crack at those, too. I say MORE dragons is always a good thing.
-
sounds like that.
-
More dragons would be a good thing if they didnt all turn out to be crap.
The reason Vermithrax from dragonslayer is great is not only the design which is fantastic, but because as a character he is a evil bastard. -
I want a Drizzt movie! lol
-
was fucking BA
-
I loved that movie as a kid, and actually have (somewhere) the Marvel comic adaptation. Such great imagery in that movie. And I have a soft spot for Dragon Heart. When it came out, the effects were leaps ahead of what others were doing at the time. Plus, it's got Connery's voice. How can you go wrong.
-
...VICTORY OF EAGLES, is due in stores (as a hardcover no less) July 8th: http://tinyurl.com/3wy3nm
-
Falcor is one of the most fun/interesting of modern day movie dragons, because they had the balls to reinvent the design, and not to make him look like Smaug.
-
just my opinion. I could be wrong.
-
Just throwing my opinion that PJ needs to get his ass moving on the Temeraire movies as soon as he's done on TinTin. So long as they keep for the excruciating level of historical authenticity (despite the dragons, of course), those books would make for some face-smashingly awesome-tastic movies.
-
Why doesnt Wizards of the Coast get involved in the movie scene? There is plenty of good material in their books, including the Dragonlance stories and the Dark Elf Sagas. They usually seem to get the art work and representation right, where are those artists when movies are made?? I wanna see a Drizz't DoUrden movie.
-
That was a flop. I can't ever think of a Dragon movie in recent times that was a hit.
Dragon movies think because they have a dragon in it means automatic box office success.
Wrong! -
(The first Dark Elf saga book) Great story, great characters, not sure if it would ever work as a flick. Problems:Would you cast black actors? You couldn't do blackface LOL. If you changed them to really pale say hello to controversey. The movie would be DARK. Thematically yeah but I mean visually. You'd have to (understandably) cheat and have like blue and purple torches all over the place and even then that's 2 hours watching a movie that takes place in a cave. I'd still love to see it made. Opening scene: the mother giving birth intercut with silent ninja Drow sneaking into the opposing house's compound.
-
Loved the dragons in Reign of Fire, though they received less screen time than they deserved. Dragonheart is no monumental work of cinema, but it is fun and endearing, and I'd question your humanity if you didn't turn on the water works come the film's conclusion. Dragonlance could go the way of LotR (more Fellowship than Return) or straight to Eragon territory, depending on who gets their hands on it. I fear the latter given how most 'high fantasy' is handled these days.
-
Yep, it would never happen. Outside of LOTR, D&D'ish movies have been mostly flops and money losers. Heck, the most recent 'Dungeon Seige' kind of pushes more and more companies to not take on these projects(people out of their elements trying to make these movies).
Back to the recent Dragonlance animation. Yeah, the art was sucktastic. I can't believe how bad it was in this day of animation. And Sturm didn't have freaking horns on his helmet! That defined that bastart! How can you not have the horns!?
Raistlin and Lord Soth.....coolest/scariest onscreen villains/anti-heroes of the fantasy realm. -
There would be no talk of Dragonlance had LoTR, and Tolkien, not led the way. I mean, not being to your personal taste is one thing but if you seriously think Dragonlance is on a higher level than LotR then I suggest you stick to the type of literature and movies you obviously seem to understand; Little Golden Books (I suggest Pooh And the Pebble Hunt) and Thomas the Train Videos. As for dragons, perhaps Dragon in the Cupboard by Karen Dolby.
-
5th anniversary of that particular talkback catchphrase.
-
Are you telling me that you cannot build on greatness? You can't take the tools of something that was good, and make a story that is better?
It was already mentioned on this board that all of these other fantasy stories would most likely not be around if Tolkein hadn't written his, but to say that Tolkeins books are the upmost, absolute best is ridiculous. Some of that stuff is so complicated to read. The way the Dragonlance stories are setup up is in another world, with another story, and other characters.
To say that they both can't be great is absurd, because (imo) the Dragonlance trilogies were written better than the LOTR trilogy.
It's not delusional. It's great authoring. -
I'm saying do a remake of Flight of Dragons, but add mroe elemts from the book it was based on "The Dragon and the George."
I watched that Discovery Chanel special on dragons a while back and got really pissed off when they went on to say that dragons flew around much like blimps with the hydrogen gasses....because that was totally ripped from FLight of Dragons...
seriously. -
would be the scariest dragon movie of all time.
it's giving me shivers just thinking about it. -
What, the word dragon has to be in the title or the whole movie has to revolve around the dragon? The dragons in those movies were pivotal, and excellently rendered. I'd take more movies with dragons in strong supporting roles like that over more dragon-starring movie since those are basically big monster movies, which more often than not suck shit. _____________________________________ Flight of Dragons is long overdue for a decent DVD release. That, The Last Unicorn, and the Hobbit were excellent animated fantasy, and about the only use I have for Rankin and Bass (yeah I loved Thundercats at the time, but that and Silverhawks stopped being watchable for me long ago).
-
Dragon Drive (manga) has some nice dragon designs. Fat dragons. Skinny dragons. Dragons that climb on rocks.
-
fine, but not as the focus. The centaurs and such worked in Narnia because they were not the main story. We've become so jaded by digital technique that if you've seen one dragon, you've seen them all.And yes, Dragonslayer still holds up well today. Although the young ladyfolk of that village would be shagging like minx if they had any brains. And MacNichol rocks the perm fro.
-
A good dragon movie will be one in which the dragon are part of the story, not the story. like good scifi it is a setting nothing more BSG could be about Greek travelers fleeing Persian invaders. the Temeraire books have excellent potential because dragons are a part not the prime mover in the story.
-
Good grief. The characters are stock D&D characters, for crying out loud. You're completely off your rocker if you think that. Try the Similian. That had a bad ass dragon in that.
-
That's what he said in the web chat. He has always dreamed of bringing Smaug to the screen and he wants him to look like the ultimate dragon, better than any other that's graced the screen previously. If anyone's gonna succeed with that venture it's Del Toro with WETA. Christmas 2011 can't come any sooner.
-
Sure, many aspects would have to be tweaked to work in the film world, but
it would make a solid foundation for a trilogy of films.
ILM could do an awesome job, if they focused on it rather than junk-pile robots or cheesy wizard movies. -
I have a feeling that for better or worse, we're going to get saturated with dragons in a couple of years as everyone rushes to catch a ride on the anticipation for the Hobbit. There are just so many stories that can be done about dragons - Pern type companions, Hulk-smash type destroyers, guardians, guides, tragic immortals. I have to admit I've always wanted to see a "quiet, serious fantasy" woven from the themes of that bittersweet old song "Puff the Magic Dragon".
-
Reign of Fire should have been a trilogy
Part 1. The dragons almost exterminate mankind.
Part 2. Van Zandts story in the US. How he got the dragon tooth.
Part 3. The finale.
There was so much potential unrealised. -
Believe it or not, some things actually do come from a purer, more innocent view of the world.
-
except Dragonslayer.
Seriously Reign of Fire?Earthsea?! WTF!? Why do fantasy movie fans seem to be ok with settling on shit?Especially on a site devoted to movie lovers? "Well hey, that Eragon movie that wasn't so bad.I only wanted to claw my eyes out a little bit." Sheesh.
I think if someone could figure out a way to bring Anne Mcaffrey's books to the big screen without cocking it up, we'd have a winner ( or series of winners), but the trick is the whole "without cocking it up" part. -
call it Dragonology!
-
Your right that made me feel better. I actually love the song and it always makes me cry.
I'm glad the rumour was just a rumour. -
The Melniboneans use dragons as steeds?
'The Forgotten Beasts of Eld' by Patricia McKillip might make a decent flick...
The 'Dragonbone Chair' has one 'live' dragon in it. Also would be a great live-action trilogy. It's Tolkien-esque, but different enough to set it apart from the Jackson films (WETA either consciously or inadvertently copied the Asian-inspired aesthetic for it's Elves from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn's Elf analogue the Sithi).
Eustace turns into a dragon in the third Narnia book, if they make another one of those crappy movies...
Oh, and Falkor was modeled after Chinese dragons -- Leung, by he way. -
Not a lot of us have seen "Tales from Earthsea" unless you're into bootlegs or have an unlocked DVD player, since the bozos at the skiffy channel have blocked distribution til 2009. Not that it's likely to prove to be worth the wait, alas, though even minor Ghibli is good. Keep yr fingers crossed for Jackson to do Temeraire.
-
There's no narrative to these books, its just like an encyclopedia of dragons.
-
then you would the chronology of the movies going 2 1 3. no big budget action franchise would ever do anything so stupid. Not even George lucus could be so stupid. oh wait, he could.
-
which is why the reference in the darabont script as to what ever happened to willie scott (implying that she came after marion) is kinda stupid too
-
Wow! Thanks to Merrick whoever is head of marketing at 20th Century Fox is reaching for the Pepto-Bismol right now. Especially when you call a crappy Korean import the "highest profile dragon movie of recent times" over ERAGON which cost Fox $100,000,000 to make. Oh wait. If we tack on print costs and distribution and marketing and all that good stuff, and then use that basic Hollywood equation that you have to make back twice your budget in order to break even......That means you spent TWO HUNDERED MILLION DOLLARS to come in behind a crappy import Korean movie! Nice going, Fox!
-
Ok, on this I think we can agree. Speaking in literary terms, whoever thinks DRAGONLANCE is better written then Tolkien's LOTR books SERIOUSLY needs to put down the dice and role playing cards and get out of the basement, or you need to stop drinking so much wine while parading around in furs at the local Medieval show in the park...
-
Hey this cinerama film had a Dragon in it too! I have the old hardcover movie book of the movie as well!
Never saw the movie though, hope it comes out on Blu-Ray of course! -
The best dragon story ever. The song is so sad and sweet. I always wanna cry when little Jackie Paper grows up and breaks Puff's heart by leaving him behind. It's like ET in reverse.
-
I just pray to god that Jackson does as good a job on Temeraire as he did on LOTR, and that it's at least a trilogy and not a dumbed down version crammed into one movie. Those movies have the potential to be EPIC.
-
Read whatever you want, enjoy it and don't waste time comparing one author to another. After all, one just ends up in a "nerd fight" if you say your preference is superior to another. The other poster, I Dunno, just always bad mouths LotR whenever he post on anything Tolkien related so I was just giving it back to him. He's simply a worthless troller, IMHO. Why disparage one over the other due to personal taste? Isn't that just childish? Now, to be clear, I never said that both could not be read. Why would I wish to impose my taste over another’s?And if you think the Hickman's are better authors than Tolkein, fine, that IS your opinion, after all. However, if you want to debate that subject then be prepared to do it on grounds other than personal taste. What is your argument that their works are superior, in a literary sense, to Tolkien's? “Great authoring” is still just your opinion and, surely, you recognize there are many, many books published on that very subject concerning Tolkien’s works? How many books can you name that argue for the Hickman’s in that sense? Now, what you see as "complicated" I see as rich depth entirely worthy of my time to delve into and comprehend. How else can one get the whole mythology of Arda without understanding the Silmarillion, for example? Is the entire beginning and thousands of years of a planet and its people complicated? Are there lots and lots of names? Yes, how wonderful! On the surface, of course, it requires a bit of patience but it's worth it in the end. I can assure you I'm not the brightest jewel in the crown and if I can get it anyone can.The Hobbit, on the other hand, is easily understood and can be appreciated by many age levels. After all, Tolkien re-wrote much of it for the 1966 edition to bring it in line with his “Hobbit sequel” and respond to his children chastising him for talking down to his audience. Finally (yay!), I hope a Dragonlance movie turns out well and is a huge financial success to boot. Though for me, they are pale shadows of Tolkiens works and I put ‘em down after the first book, I still want them to succeed and please their fan base. I certainly plan to see it.
-
Thank you for your intelligent, courteous and well-balanced post. Other TBers should follow your example.
I never heard that Tolkien rewrote THE HOBBIT, which of course he wrote first before the great Ring trilogy and came out on a scale not quite so grand. Where did you read or hear that he redid it?
If you are able to post an answer, could you send me a copy, as I don't get here to this site as often as I would like?

just hope HBO does George RR Martins' A Song of Ice and Fire series. No one's seen a dragon for about 150 years and at the end of the first book, 3 dragons are hatched from fossilized eggs and we see them grow and mature through the next couple books. It's interesting because it not only showcases a dragons life cycle but the developement and sociology of dragons is explored and as they grow they become more and more dangerous. At one point, one flaps in front of a guy then spits fire in his face setting his head ablaze. They're brutal and they can't eat any food that isn't cooked first which seems to make sense to me. They're also like fish in that the size they reach is only limited by the cage or pit you keep it in. And yes, Dragonslayer still holds up except for McNichol's perm. And I thought Reign of Fire rocked. When the dragons weren't on the screen the characters were just as fascinating. I loved McConaughey's Quint character. As far as Dragonlance goes, I haven't read them but every fantasy geek i know raves about them so their must be something there.
-
I honestly believe that Dragonlance, at least the first trilogy, is a better story than LOTR. The characters alone were much deeper than anyone in LOTR. And it was a helluva lot more than throwing a ring into a volcano (which those eagles could have done in hours). You have your opinions, I have mine but don't call me a troll because I have an opinion you disagree with.
-
It rocks! End of.
-
If you're going to make a Dragon Movie, take it seriously. Simple as that. And I know Reign of Fire was not the greatest movie ever. I thought it was pretty good regarding what other Dragon flicks are like.
-
Did you read LOTRs? Because there is a lot more going on then just throwing a ring into a volcano. Just asking, you sound like someone who just watched the movies.
-
Umm....they already made one. It was released earlier this year as an animated feature, with Michael Rosenbaum (Tanis), Kiefer Sutherland (Raistlin) and Lucy Lawless (Goldmoon). It was also absolutely awful - the story was heavily truncatd, there were some ridiculous changes made, and the animation style was retro-80s. Apparently, this is all they could get the studios to spend on the licence (most of it probably went to the voice talent), so I wouldn't hope for a live action anytime soon.
-
Tell Peter Jackson to watch Master and Commander a dozen times and then get to work.
-
dragon's world a fantasy made real will rape your face if you like dragons
-
Tolkien didn't rewrite the Hobbit whole-sale. He modified it to fit in line more with the Lord of The Rings, when those books were released.
-
Were Cool & had Cool Dragons too!
-
Anyone who says so didn't read LOTR close enough. The Ring had the ability to subtly influence fate around it, especially if in the proximity of a being susceptible to it's power (the Hobbits were emblematic of the strength of the joining of all the races -- short like dwarves, faces bodies society like rustic men, ears stealth and nature lore of elves, and didn't have motivations toward power -- so they had a higher resistance. The Eagle would've have failed in some way at the last or succumbed to the Fell Beasts, or the Ring would've bounced off a rock and rolled out of Orodruin.
-
would also make decent films.
-
That's a non-question anyway and has been answered many, many times over.
-
There's a cliché/saw that still rings true: It's not so much what you say but how you say it. “It would be better than Lord of the Rings. (Obviously nothing wrong with stating an opinion though entirely conjectural.). Yes, I said it.” What did you mean there? Were you being daring, in your mind, by violating some un-stated canon? As Bugs Bunny used to say, “Oh bruddah!” Your second post was quite contemptuous, wouldn’t you agree?Partial answers, anyway, to your "question": Yes, what Dingbatty said. It would've been too risky. More pointedly, they were forbidden by Manwe (Uh-oh, there’s that Silmarillion stuff again!) to directly interfere. You’ll notice in all of Tolkien’s stories, the eagle’s only help after the fact. Yes, they directly intervened in the Battle of Five Armies but you’ll please notice that was also to settle a score with the Goblins of the Misty Mountains. Why don’t you also ask why they didn’t help Gandalf defeat the Balrog atop Zirak-zigil? Notice one only carried Gandalf back to Lorien after his spirit was sent back into his body (Manwe once more) where, again, we see an eagle only helping indirectly. It’s not like the eagles were subordinates of Gandalf and he could just order them around at will. Yes, they would provide help in desperate situations, if asked. They were always, like Gandalf, acting under the direction of Manwe. Now, to be objective about it, yes, I think they could’ve done it if we only consider the physical act itself. The eagles were definitely speedier than the Nazgul’s fell beasties and Sauron was obviously distracted by the attack on the Black Gate. However, there’s much more to it than that one-dimensional viewpoint. Please consider all the other factors before you conjure up the notion of some glaring plot hole. Hey, Google the question if you want answers from people a heck of a lot smarter than me.

Check your mail.Short answer: Tolkien realized there was no way Gollum would've willingly handed over the Ring to Bilbo after he won the Riddle Game in the first printing of the Hobbit.

Theres a book called Dragoncharm by an English author called Graham Edwards that would make a fantastic movie. All the characters are dragons so it would have to totally CGI or something. Its just so emotional and full of great characters and action. Try his website because they were going to make a movie before but it didnt happen. http://www.grahamedwardsonline.co.uk

On Dragons that was pretty cool CGI on their habits and whatnot. Steward narr'd. They even had some knights come in to finish them off at the end. That was pretty decent. I agree DragonSlayer rulz them all right now. Hobbit is the next great hope.

however was a great Dragon movie! Great singing also!

Oh no we've got the fucking dragons!

The first book in the series cries out to be adapted to a film. Peter Jackson of all people owns the rights. That's a close to a gimme as you can get in film.
Too bad Jackson's so busy with other things - it would be a hell of a film. It might even be a hell of a miniseries depending on where the series eventually goes (although the 3rd was a bit weak and the 4th was almost authentically bad). But book 1 was outstanding in terms of its film potential.
So . . . don't give up on dragon films just yet.
