Yahoo has posted a new trailer for the STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS theatrical movie due in August - a project that'll also serve as an introduction to a television series this Fall. You can behold it in all kinds of Glorious QuickTime.
This trailer seems to have a bit more atmosphere than the previous versions we've seen; if you've the ability to do so, be sure to watch this in HD...some interesting (vivid) color work here.

I'm sick to death of people who think that we should forget all about Indiana Jones and Star Wars because recent adventures have not been perfect. Star Wars is amazing, always has been and this looks outstanding!! Would you rather that because Menace and Clones weren't the same as the OT (Sith was incredible...) that we should bury the entire franchise? or maybe work on a new project like this to improve the saga? I'll take new adventures any day. All in all from A New Hope, thru Empire, Jedi, Ewoks TV specials and animated series, The prequels, the Clone Wars cartoons, this and the future TV series, Star Wars remains one of the most exciting and wildly imaginative things u can see on screen. And that's the gods honest truth.

I think one of the major reasons the new trilogy paled was that they were prequels. We know what's gonna happen so stop with the fucking prequels. I'd rather have a story set thousands of years prior like Knights of the Old Republic. I hear the live action show will also be set in this time...Jesus Fucking Christ can we get a new fucking star wars story...or do what everybody wants is more LUKE, LEIA, HAN stuff.

I feel cheated- saving costs by using animation, not developing characters, I don't know- I actually dont think I will see this on opening night to prove a point. Lucas needs to pull his head out o his ass and realize that his new trilogy is a piece of shit. i will read the reviews, and judge this movie on what the critics say. I will not just watch it because it is star wars. I am done with that.

But you know something? The story's over. We've seen Anakin turn to Darth Vader and back again. We've seen the rise and fall of the Empire. We've seen it. It's done. Everything else is just filler at this point.

Because, if you think about it, all war is pointless. Look at the mess in Iraq. The whole thing is over the control of oil and establishing American imperialism in the Middle East. Lots of lives are lost on both sides based on the belief that Iraq harbored weapons of mass destruction. The Clone Wars were orchestrated by Palpatine (Bush?) to consolidate his power over the Senate and to eradicate the Jedi. He puppeteered both the Republic and the Separatists. The whole thing was a no-win situation, which really resonated for me, especially during these times. If it's done right, the Clone Wars could be portrayed as an illustration of the futility of war.

No, what he said was 'There is another', referring to Leia, after Obi-Wan says'That boy is our last hope'. Although I heard Lucas wanted to have an unrevealed character as Luke's twin sister and he would go searching for her after Return Of The Jedi, but after deciding to wrap up the saga with Episode 6, he quickly made Leia the twin and tied it all up in a (rather messy) bow. Now you know why Leia plants a kiss on Luke's lips during Empire Strikes Back, they weren't supposed to be related at the time!

It's Quicktime when you choose to see the HD version. Which is why the headline said "...Trailer Has Pretty Colors WHEN Viewed In Glorious QuickTime!!" [emphasis added] and the article said "...if you've the ability to do so, be sure to watch this in HD...some interesting (vivid) color work here." In any case, this seems like it may be a good TV show, but not something I'd pay to see in theaters.

Sorry the nerd community 26-40 is so old and cranky about their star wars and transformers. The idea of Jedi's is enough for me to go see this movie. So shut up and wait for your Star Wars 7,8,9 because it will happen. Too bad that Harrison wont want to be in it. And Mark the voice Hammel's face looks like a fucking catchers mit. The simpsons wrote an episode in which the family go to calfornia after watching a film called the drone wars. classic stuff. especially the jim jam bonks. They go and track George Randall. The bit where homer and Marge toss George around his hilarious. Then there was Blue Harvest. So, I magine that george after seeing those, terminated hs deal with Fox straight away. 1) Reason for hope: After Sith, Lucas said he wanted to work on Indy, then small independent projects. Clearly, Clone Wars is not what he meant. Is it possible that he took some of the nerd crit to heart and wanted another crack at it? Is it possible that this could actually be any better than the prequels? Why do the lyrics, "meet the new boss..." keep running thru my head?2) Reason for despair: Same problem (among many others) with the prequels: We already know what happens to the principals. The new characters, by chronological definition, will either die or be irrelevant by New Hope. Am I the only one who was bored with the last fight in Sith? I'd known what was going to happen since 1983, when the Jedi paperback came out. Call me crazy, but I'm a'bettin that Anakin & co. live thru the clone wars, but their apprentices won't.

The designs and renders look pretty nice (helps to be using Genndy's template) but the movement of the characters appears far too stiff and robotic. That's fine when there's only robots onscreen, but Jedi and clones and even the ships should move much more fluid.

... if I actually gave two shits about Anikan Skywalker. The prequels pretty much made Anikan out to be a total duche bag... and his turning to the darkside came across as so forced that I really just didn't buy it. Why on earth would I want to see another movie the features him as the hero?

It was that opening track from ROTS and the use of Vaders theme that helped the most I suppose. And YES, that's Christopher Lee. He confirmed on his website that he's doing the voice for this film.

not re-visiting the OT is simply that the story is over. They lived happily ever after. That's the fantasy/fairy tale ending that these stories would take. The novels, the comics, all that stuff is someone else's attempt to keep the story going. All they do is poke holes in what was accomplished in the OT; i.e. the good guys beat the bad guys and peace reigns. The EU just keeps pulling that apart to create more conflict where none need be.
Doing stories set during the OT is also more difficult because the rebellion was a guerrilla insurgency, not a big conflict like the Clone Wars. The rebellion took the Empire apart using small conflicts on the inside, not by just assaulting any Imperial controlled world; they made it quite clear they would have been crushed if they attempted to do so. So the idea of epic, large scale conflict is pretty much out. Hell, the entire Rebel force was in orbit around Endor during the Death Star II assault and they weren't facing even half of the Imperial fleet.
The Clone Wars allows more scale and encourages more conflict, allowing things to be more visually dynamic, in my opinion. There is much more gray in the Clone Wars, as opposed to te pretty black/white universe of the Rebellion. And given the right circumstances, Anakin can be a much more interesting character than Luke because he's in a great amount of internal distress. He has a destiny that he is aware of but cannot discern. He's trying to walk the heroes path but keeps stumbling off the road. He's more haunted and has the potential to be more complex. The most complex characters in the OT were Han and Boba, and while I love them both, I don't think they could carry a long series on their own. Unless it's some kind of weird sitcom.
It's clear that Lucas just doesn't feel he's done with the overall story of Star Wars, but there is a clear end as far as he's concerned and he doesn't want to add on to it. The Rebels win, everyone happy. Then End. -
an older Luke (Hamill can certainly do voice work, and aside from Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer could use the work too.) and some younger Jedi in training. Lucas forgets that one of the biggest draws in a franchise like this is finding out how it will turn out. Who will survive, who will die, who will get the romance, etc. With Anakin we know exactly how all of that will turn out. Ho, hum.

I usually don't mind them that much, it's a cartoon after all so the design should be different to separate this from the actual films, but Count Dooku looks just AWFUL. soooooo bad. I seem to recall him having a lot more face and a lot less chin and beard.

The TV show is being produced for Cartoon Network, which is owned by Time Warner. So it only makes sense that Warner Bros. theatrically distributes this. Star Wars is not exclusive to Fox. If I remember correctly, Fox still had to outbid other studios to distribute the prequels.

Proof that Lucas directed ESB and ROTJ, visually. Neither movie had any skewed camera angles. Lucas apparently trusts animators enough to give them more free reign, cinematically, than Kershner or Marquand. Considering "Robocop 2" and "Jagged Edge," I can't blame him.

Y'know what just gets me every time i come onto this site - little bitches who constantly attack GL for taking their hard earned money. If you do not like Star Wars then DO NOT PURCHASE ANY STAR WARS MATERIAL. EVER. you have a choice yknow! just dont do it. Lucas gets paid for the stuff he creates. He gets millions a year. And he's worth every penny because it brings a hell of a lot of people a hell of a lot of happiness to play with the toys, read the books, watch the movies etc. Without George Lucas' bank account we would have NEVER had the special effects industry and even the entire movie industry existing as it does today. We owe the man so much. I dare you to imagine the state of cinema without the contributions made my Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound etc. That was GL that pushed that. And he pushes digital technology all the time. He pushed boundries. So maybe The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones just didn't hold that oscar worthy performance that you wanted but i seriously don't give a flying fuck. That's why i was given an imagination - to fill in those blanks by myself. But i have seen things on a cinema screen that are simply incredible - all thanks to George Lucas. What the fuck have any of you done...?

Wow, that script looked better than the weird thing I saw. As much as I love Cate Blanchett, here character was boring, Ray Winstone's was worse. Mutt was ok, but in this script there was a much more interesting antagonist, and more of Marion and no Mutt. And a Sallah cameo. Wish they had made this film and not the one I saw. Seems like Darabont actually wanted to address the whole old Indy thing (as well as issues of patriotism) in an intelligent way. Leave it to Lucas to dumb things down.
And yeah, this Clone Wars thing is about 5 years past anyone caring. -
We all spent 16 years imagining the prequels in our minds. Nothing Lucas came up with could satisfy that kind of pent-up demand. Phantom Menace blew away any thoughts thst Lucas had the saga all planned out. Going back to Tatooine was a catastrophe and opened up a whole slew of retro-continuity disasters- Obi-Wan doesn't recognise R2 and 3PO, Owen and Beru don't recognise R2 and 3PO etc. That was the most disappointing thing for me, Lucas seemed to be making it all up on the hoof. The only Star Wars project i'd be interested in seeing now is Episodes VII - IX with a 60 year old Mark Hamill but that's just a fanboys dream, the saga is over. Despite the disappointments of adulthood nothing can take away the original years of Star Wars fandom, happy days indeed.

Actually what is weird is I watched the making of Episode 2 and they actually designed a much longer and bigger battle scene. But I guess because they wanted PG instead of PG-13 a lot of shit had to be taken out. I remember seeing animation work for Clone Troopers getting snatched up by those bug guys. With the animated movie you can do anything because they are animated so clone troopers will die in mass because there will be no blood and no visual human loss of life. So this could be okay. Also someone brought up lines well in LA and NY on big opening nights there are lines. I was in Ohio when Iron Man opened and opening night I just walked right in. I do think it is different it just matters where you live.

This is about money, pure and simple. Not that it won't be decent, I think it will. Lucas is trying to make a good product out of this stuff, but make no mistake, Star Wars is a franchise and Lucas has a lot of employees that depend on revenue to keep their jobs. The easiest way to keep those greenbacks rolling in is to continue STAR WARS. The Clone Wars series is a way to keep getting advertising dollars and sell toys. Lucas isn't dumb, he's just backed into a corner. When the prequels were ramping up, Lucasfilm hired a lot of people that would lose their jobs due to downsizing if he didn't keep the STAR WARS gravytrain rolling forward. Plus, can you imagine the backlash for him if he really just went off and did his art films and said, "Screw Star Wars. That's not me anymore." Everytime he went anywhere he would be berated for it. At least now, he can say, "Well, we're doing Clone Wars."

I remember getting that Action Figure, but not knowing what to do with him (Other than an evil adverasry for 3PO), as you couldn't put a gun in his hands and he's not really in the film. I think you see him in a long shot or something. Glad to see he's getting his dues. Hope Powerdroid, 2-1B and FX-7 get bigger parts in this, cuz they were fucking useless figures too.

It's crazy that back in the day there were action figures of droids and characters that were barely seen in the background but there was never a figure of Tarkin until a few years ago. Yes, Death Star Droid action figure always ended up in some bizarre side story where he either battled Threepio. I also recall one strange story I concocted where Threepio was captured by the Empire, reprogrammed to be evil, and had his CPU placed in an "evil" body (Death Star Droid). Good times...

Can someone please explain this to me? Why is Phantom Menace, even on a constant-dollar basis, still the second-highest-grossing "Star Wars" movie EVER? Why was Episode III the number one movie around the world and the top-selling DVD of that year? Just who is it that is apparently loving "Star Wars" -- even the "Star Wars" that you guys say is so awful? Hmmmmmm. Could it be just possible, maybe, possibly, that YOU are not the audience for "Star Wars"? That it's about kids who are less critical, loving the movies for what they are, not some impossible vision of what they want them to be? As far as what we're stuck with, I am jazzed at Genndy's involvement. The cinematic look of it is clearly his. (and his team from Samurai Jack) They will be why I'll want to see it.

What they avoided showing everyone in this trailer is that Jabba the Hutt's the bad guy again, with loads of rampant, nonsensical rehashed ideas for the sake of kiddie spectacle.
The action sequences didn't look too bad, I'll admit, but that's because Tartakovsky's already released "Clone Wars" DVDs made Lucas's vision seem so utterly pussified, thus the new guys were forced to up the ante.
Honestly... this franchise is dead to me. It's become a sad, product-selling echo of what it might once have been. -
*emerges from bunker* Oh thank god, there are still some of you intact after another Star Wars TB or as I refer to them "a race to hyperbole fiesta". The new triology's biggest sin always was and always will be (for me) its uneven mediocrity. Each of the prequels seemed enjoyable when I watched them, but none survived the re-watch, unlike the OT...which of course was really directed by Jesus (who else?). That said, I am really excited about Clone Wars, having enjoyed the animated series of the same name. To me Clone Wars was everything Ep.II should have been, so if they're throwing it in theaters, I'll have zero problem seeing it.

Went to see "Kung Fu Panda" last week and they played the new Clone Wars trailer in front of it. At first I was like "there's a new Star Wars movie?" and then while watching it the thought came to my head "what's the point of seeing this new Clone Wars film, it looks as boring and mundane as the prequel series." There was absolutely nothing in the trailer that screamed to me to see it. The style of storytelling they are using for these prequels is really really dull. So, I'm done with it all. Loved the original trilogy, I adhere to that, but I've got other films that are of more interest. (Loved Kung Fu Panda, by the way).

These people who have a personal and emotional connection dont accept. and this is why, everyime, lucas goes back to the drawing board, they cry foul. Lucas raped my childhood and so forth. none of these people said boo, when Scott re-did alien, or bladder-runner. there is a certain form of perfectionism that exists in filmmaking. Speilberg, is one, lucas is one, Scorcese is another. To anyone outside this world it seems like vandalism. Which is why lucas refused to release the original star wars on DVD. to him it was far from perfect. The reason the Prequels made so much money, is every OT fan was going to see them all whether they sucked or not. I can only speak for myself and my friends who are SW fans, but we all saw each PT film twice in the theater, mainly because we are DIEHARD SW Fans growing up, and we wanted them to be great, and sit right next to the OT movies on our DVD shelf. Nobody wanted to hate the PT, and many fans like myself made excuses and defended these movies for many years. But after ROTS, which wasn't that bad, I looked at the whole PT and realized it really wasn't that great. Anakin/Padme had zero chemistry, there are plot inconsistencies all over the place, and the overuse of CGI just doesn't mix with the real locations of the OT. I think there are extremes that hate and love these movies, and I think those fans are a minority, cause everyone I know didn't hate em, didn't love em, but thought they were OK with awful stuff like Jar Jar, etc. It has nothing to do with expectations cause ESB was the most anticipated sequel in the history of movies, and the reason it is loved is simple: It's a great movie.

See here is the deal with the Special Editions and the Original Cuts, they both can exist. Lord of the Rings, Terminator 2, E.T. all have both versions on DVD in the SAME QUALITY, and those fans are all happy as they can choose whatever version they want to watch. I don't have a problem with Lucas making Special Editions as many directors do it, it is the refusal to acknowledge that the original exist, or to put them out on DVD in some shitty non-anamorphic transfer is what gets fans like me mad at him. If Lucas would have put out the SE & OOT on the same DVD in 2004, and in a future BluRay release, do the same, 99% of the fans would be happy, as they can watch whatever version they want. But as long as Lucas keeps the OOT from seeing the light in great quality, then there will be a large part of the fanbase that will never be happy. As Leia said to Tarkin, (I am paraphrasing) "The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers." Meaning the more he TELLS us what to watch, the more people are not going to go along with it.

I just don't put any value on my 8 year old (or any other one for that matter) critical opinion. I do however, put value on the fact that I can watch the OT happily nowadays and enjoy it without resorting to nostalgia, whereas if I try to watch the PT I inevitably end up either turning it off or fuming in rage. Totally different.

The movie was loved universally by all ages, not just kids like myself. My nephews love Spongebob, does that mean it is should be winning Emmy's every year because every kid who is 8 years old loves it? Sure I loved it as a kid, but the movies were made for teenagers/adult, but kids like myself could enjoy them. The difference is nowadays in movies that the directors are gearing the movies towards kids, instead of understanding that movies like SW, ESB, Raiders, Back to the Future weren't kid movies, yet kids still were able to love them.

Almost every other movie that came out around the same time as those have the same problem movies today have. They are forgettable. Explorers was made around the same time... as was Goonies. Now I love both those movies but, man, they are NOT for adults. They barely hold up as movies that kids today would watch. Everyone keeps comparing everything that is made TODAY with Raiders, the original Star Wars and Back to the Future. No movies will ever capture that magic. That is what makes them so perfect.

This movie is not MENT FOR ANY OF US. It is a KIDS movie. Kids will like it. We are all emotionally stunted 30-40 year olds that refuse to let go of our childhoods so we blame the movies. It's not the movies, its us. Kids will love this. Who CARES how much it makes its opening weekend? That matters? So if it makes a billion dollars its good? If it makes nothing its bad? I think things really changed in the late 80's, when the studios realized kids like you and I would see these movies multiple times and that is where the money, along with merchandising. If you look at the Scifi/Action/Fantasy genre from about 77-85, the original movies were all made on an adult level. Alien, Bladerunner, The Terminator, Superman:The Movie, even ET which is a kids movie isn't dumbed down for kids. Star Trek II had frickin Spock die, Empire Strikes Back had 'I am your father'. The Terminator had the hero, Reese die in the movie. You don't see any movies like that anymore that kick you in the ass. I agree that I am naming the classics, but they still stand as classics because they don't cater to the kiddies, and they weren't by the number movies. People always say we changed since we grew up, but I think movies have changed, and we stayed the same. I always think if they made Jaws today, how lame it would be, how they would have George Clooney playing Roy Scheiders part, and how a CG Jaws would be on screen every 3 minutes, and how they would never show a 10 year old kid getting eaten by a shark! Spielberg, Lucas, and all of those guys had balls back in that day to do stuff like that, and this a generation Michael Bay and the ADD generation that needs action every 2 minutes, and the story and characters are secondary.

Star Wars 1-6 (viewed in that order) equals a really wonderful sequence of films. I absolutely think that 4 and 5 are the best. And I personally feel that 1 an 6 are the least good. (I hate Jar Jar, I hate young Anakin, but I also hate the Ewoks and I hate the not-cool-any-more Han Solo). I also agree that there are plot inconsistencies. But all that apart, these films as a whole are an incredible achievement. Lucas set out to show the rise of a dictatorship, the fall or a hero, then the fall of the dictatorship and the rise of the fallen hero's son. Amazing! And how cool is it when half way through the series in Episode 4, Han Solo turns up and starts kicking ass.

point of the prequils is the you're really not supposed to like them. Once you have a set idea of who a villan is supposed to be, its no fun to see that they're really a person. They'res no clear cut side to root for like when we were 8. George new this. So the prequils are SUPPOSED to be hard to take...
they're not fun at all but they're SUBLIME.

SITH was the best of all 6 movies in my opion. By far the best directed, acted and well put together. And asks very uncomfortable questions about what side you're on politicallly, and what you belive.

Hindsight is 20-20, but here is how I would've done the prequels:
I: Trade Federation takes over Naboo over trade issue, but really because Palpatine wants Darth Maul to secure the latest greatest cloning technology that a scientist there has developed. Maul kills scientist, and Qui Gonn, then escapes for part 2. Droid army gets crushed.
II: Obi-Wan wants to track down Darth Maul. Separatists create Clone Army, realizing Droids are useless. Republic under Palapatine, facing massive onslaught, must militarize to an extent never before contemplated. Dooku, separatist leader, bumps off Maul when Maul won't switch from Palpatine to Dooku, then neutralizes Obi-Wan and Anakin and escapes.
III: Republic, in fighting to keep the galaxy intact from Separatist Clone Army, has militarized so much that it is no longer a peaceful freedom-loving democracy. Military-industrial complex supports Palpatine because he supports them. Storm troopers completely devoted to Palpatine, not Republic or Jedi. Switch from Republic to Empire would be much more believable. Like we've seen in history from ancient times to now.

The key is that the SEPARATISTS should've had the Clone Army, not the REPUBLIC!!!! It was so jarring to see Jedi fighting alongside proto-Storm Troopers. And the droids were not formidable at all. (Not that Storm Troopers were any badder, at least in ROTJ.)

25 years of build-up, hype and expectation. Jar Jar was about as funny as syphilis and twice as embarassing; 'Mannequin Skywalker'; stupid plot; too much reliance on CG = massive disappointment.

You are right that the PT is a different story then the OT, and that there isn't a clear cut 'good' guys vs 'bad' guys. Lucas has now revised the Saga to be essentially Anakins story, so there is someone to root for, but he is such a dick in Episode II, and so annoying as a kid in Episode I, the audience can't like the character. I don't care if he turns evil or not, Tony Soprano is the biggest thug in the history of TV, Michael Corleone is the biggest thug in the history of movies, but the audience adores those characters and cares for them even though they are not 'good' guys, and that is the way Anakin should have been portrayed. He should have been cool, cocky, and brash, and the audience should have loved him even know we knew he would be the baddest man in a GFFA, but Lucas made him a whiney teenager who turns out to be a pyscho-path, wife-abuser, and a child killer, instead of being a soldier and killing Jedi during the war. Such a great story in theory, such a lost opportunity by Lucas.

WHEREVER THE HELL VERN LIVES -- A proverbial disturbance was felt today over the internet "geek" community, as once exalted film commentator Vern, completely lost his credibility with the devastating one two punch of a nonsensical review of the fourth Indiana Jones film and an editorial about an editorial that, once again, true to Verns new persona, doesn't actually back up his point.
Vern, whose Transformers review last year ignited a firestorm of controversy...kinda sorta, wrote a review of Spielberg's latest action epic in which he defends the film by basically saying "Well I thought this stuff was pretty neat" and "I liked certain things BECAUSE they were completely awful!" before going on to to say that it is OUR fault that we didn't like the film, excusing the filmmakers themselves of any error in choice. "It's pretty sad that a guy who claims to be so discerning about his action sequences will give an overly CG mess a free pass just because the camera is a bit more steady than Transformers," said omnipresent aint it cool talkbacker Industrykiller! "and things like character, pacing, and writing don't even seem to appear in the general vicinity of his bullshit radar."
Vern further damaged his good name by criticizing internet commentator Devin Feraci, who actually bothered to write a review of Indy 4 with points to back up his opinion, for writing an editorial about the throngs of people who are abandoning Star Wars franchise, not out of spite, but by simply being worn down by the poor quality of EVERYTHING associated with it. Written in his typical irreverent style, Vern implies that Feraci and those of his ilk are "fucks" for disliking a series of films with bad writing, directing, action, acting, editing, special effects, and probably even grip work and catering (speculative).
Content with being sardonic without merit, Vern couldn't be reached for comment at this time, but we'll see about later in the talkback. -

Bulloch was told to keep the character , very vague.A scene was partly filmed on Slave 1 , that had Bobba talking to Han in Carbonite..that would have shed light on this.A movie mag published shrtely after Empire came out , more or less blew the secret , and George must have reacted by changing everything , for Jedi.Now Bobba's origin has been revealed/changed in the P trilogy, all this is lost.But think about this ..ROTJ opens with Han being rescued by Lukes sister ,{Now Leia} disguised as a male bounty hunter!George just swapped things around a bit.With the Bobba concept abandoned .. the character was pointless and George dispatched him , in a pathetic way as soon as possible.

Oh..I'm sure Lucas, by the time Sith rolled out, was trying to say something. But lets be honest, the man couldn't write a jingle for McDonalds if you gave him a template, let alone any kind of relevant, meaningful filmed statement. Besides if he had wanted to say something "political" he would have started with the murderous Kosovo intervention...oh wait THAT was a GOOD war.
Overall, political statements aside, I think the problem is that; while we the fans had been thinking about SW for 25 years, having visions of Citizen Cain and Shakespere, insidious darkness that would show how one so good could truely turn bad...Lucas simnply woke up one day in the mid 1990s, took a call from his accountant, flipped on the lights and said..."Well..I guess I should do something with SW". -

Because you are an adult who is not gonna get excited about a movie tie-in to a cartoon show spun-off from another cartoon show spun-off from a series of three movies that you hated more than Hitler hated Jews. It's fucking ten years later, people. There are probaly kids who liked Jar Jar fighting in Iraq by now. Is it really worth noting that you're still not won over? Just like you are worn down by George Lucas's personal artistic vendetta against you, I am worn down by hearing people whine about it every time it comes up, because it comes up EVERY GOD DAMN DAY.

I see your points. You are totally correct: If Jaws was made today... who boy. We would get Deep Blue/Smart Sharks! But lets also not forget that with every Star Trek II or Empire Strikes Back there was an equal serving of Ice Pirates, Krull, Beastmaster, Battle Beyond the Stars... these were all movies made then too. Let's face it: Speilberg and Lucas are goddamn amazing. If people don't like their current stuff, fine but if a filmmaker made even ONE of their masterpieces, they should be so lucky. I think the big "problem" is that they got older. Spiellberg himself said that he could not Make Close Encounters today. Or if he did, Roy would not get on the mother ship at the end and leave his family. He said the same about Jaws. He could not make a movie about grown men leaving their families. That is all about "maturity" in personal lives. Look at the Indy movies. As they got older each movie had something that is a huge step in "growing up". First one, Indy is alone then meets a long lost love. Second one, he has a kid, third one he reconciles with his father and the fourth is about a family. Its all about where the filmmaker is at the time they make the film. And we, as stunted 30 year old man-children (well many of us!) refuse to accept that.

Who knows what motivated George to add the political stuff, bu t I can say this, The themes presented in Episode III of democracy versus dictatorship are almost timeless. Similar situations have repeated themselves throughout history. Just take a look at the 20th century for more than one example of people willingly giving themselves over to fascism. It's not just a current trend.

It's pretty simple why Transformers gets a pass while Indiana Jones gets hammered. I'm surprised you don't know them as you were around when those assholes pounded their silly arguments into the ground time after time after time. First of all the special effects in Transformers, whether I like the film or not, are quite possibly the best I've eevr seen ina film. now that's highly arguable, but it can at least bes aid with a straight face. People are int heir essence animals. Sure we think, and philosophize and create but we also seem to still be overly impressed with sparkly rocks, or the cinematic equivalent thereof. I'm no different. unfortunately some of us seem to care about that more than anything else, the context in which these spectacles appear are meaningless. Sad but true. As for the other reasons, it's best to summarize with the apologists own words, "Fuck you haterz! It's based on a stoopid cartoon! All it needs to be great is giant robots blowing stuff up." Quite simply, Transformers had less baggage than Indiana Jones. the Indy films, whether you understand this or not vern, have always been above cheap thrills. i mean there were cheap thrills to be had, but there was also character and atmosphere aplenty and the filmmaking and pacing of these adventures was, to varying degrees, far superior to any other films of it's ilk. To dumb it down to the point of being a Mummy movie is simply beyond awful. Especially when they wait 19 fucking years to give us this trash. Indy 4's badness just has worse repercussions than transformers. it's not just one film being bad, it reflects on everything, a chip in an otherwise beautiful armor. And when you have maybe the best genre filmmaker that ever lived doing it there simply is no excuse. Then you have Lucas' war on film. Sorry if you're sick of it, but it'll be bitched about until the day that man retires. it's not just that he sucks, i's his fucking ego in the face of that sucking.

DUKE: I agree with you, I didn't at all mean to imply any of what you just said there. My point is that if you hated PHANTOM MENACE, you hated ATTACK OF THE CLONES, you hated REVENGE OF THE SITH, then you should not be surprised that you are un-thrilled by the trailer to the movie spin-off of the TV cartoon spin-off of the other TV cartoon spin–off of those three movies you hate.
I guess I confused you by saying "you are an adult," I should've left that out but the reason I said it was because I thought I read somewhere that there was gonna be a Star Wars TV show for adults and this one is more for kids or all ages type audiences. (but I think it looks kind of cool so I guess that makes me a weiner.)
INDUSTRY: I understand that Indiana Jones has more history and higher expectations than Transformers. Do you think that's the only reason? That makes sense. It's just weird for me to go from last summer's prevailing "it's just summer popcorn, it's not supposed to be held to any standard" to detailed lists of why every single element of (the in my view clearly way better) CRYSTAL SKULL is the worst and most inept thing ever put on film. I should probaly be happy because maybe people are returning to the belief that summer movies can be great. But I suspect it's like you said, this only applies to Indiana Jones.

And just an odd note, I've worked on various star wars things, from toys to concept art, other stuff, designs for video games, and the thing is...when you start out, it's "yeah, star wars, blah blah..", then, it's the 12th hour of the day or it's 4am and you're designing a gangplank or painting stormtroopers, and then you really SEE those things, you remember how really WEIRD and BIZARRE alot of this stuff was when it forst came out...I mean, Star Wars was like a ...WEIRD! It was pretty goddamn cool, and had this VIBE that's only in THAT movie, and in Empire, too, but it's DIFFERENT...it's the designs, the death star, Vader, the way everything moves so fast, before you get a chance to realize how weird it is...I mean, look at the stormtroopers. If you were a stormtrooper, you'd feel like a basass walking aroud in that stuff, goddamn codpiece with armor (Cameo is the Lost Stormtrooper)
Anyways, nothing can ever match that vibe. It's a once in a lifetime thing...like Pac Man Fever. Yeah, I'm old.

Throngs of people? Not really, man. If anything it might even be more popular now. Especially amongst kids who are the target demographic, not bitter adults. But there are still multitudes of adults who still love it, or are at least fond of it and still like it. Lots of people were disappointed in the prequels, sure, but they don't seem to have done Star Wars any real damage. Plus, pretty much every adult I know who liked Star Wars to begin with LOVED Revenge of the Sith. Star Wars is just nigh bulletproof. The only throngs of people leaving are overgrown, angry adult-children who don't understand why they don't feel the same way about a movie they loved when they were 8. Nobody raped your childhood, your childhood just ended.

If you rank the 6 films honestly then most people come up with this (or there may be minor variations): ESB>SW>ROTJ>ROTS>TPM>AOTC- There may be a bit of swapping around, (ROTS being better than ROTJ- which I just don't get, and the other 2 swapping places), but isn't it pathetic that not one of the prequels is considered best or second best film? Therefore, how can you argue that people love them? they don't.

I would love to meet anyone outside the internet who loves the Prequels, even my nephews only enjoy ROTS, and love the OT movies. Every person I know ranks them this way:
Classics: ESB & SW'77
Good, but some flaws: ROTJ, ROTS
Average, with major flaws: TPM,AOTC
You can't have a trilogy of 2 (TPM/AOTC) crappy movies, and ROTS gets alot of hype because it wasn't as bad as the other two, or it didn't have that much Jar Jar, or the Padme/Anakin romance is limited compared to AOTC. A movie is what a movie is, and the reason ESB & SW'77 are classics is simple: They're great. -
