This Trailer For Vin Diesel's BABYLON A.D. Doesn't Look Sucky!!

Published at:  Jun 11, 2008 10:25:24 AM CDT

Merrick here...

IGN has posted the North American trailer for the Mathieu Kassovitz directed BABYLON A.D. - which hits theaters late August.

All kinds of strangeness has been swirling around this film. It's been "coming" forever. There was talk that a particular edit of the movie would be significantly longer overseas (subsequent indications suggested the contrary). And, early marketing footage from the film didn't seem to have much of a pulse. So...it was hard to calibrate expectations.

Now we can see for ourselves, and the results seem...promising (in a guarded sort of way).

WHAT DO YOU THINK???

    Vin Diesel

    by tomdolan04

In the original Pitch Black he just about had the charisma to sell a leading role that required the strong silent type. Unfortunately nothing else I've seen him in has sold me.

He can't do the tongue in cheek roles or have the cheese of Van-Damme or even Sea-gull, and as a serious actor he has shown nothing positive. Hell even Schwarznegger had 10+years of solid flicks before descending into Kindergarden Cop - which in itself was light years beyond The Pacifier.

You were impressed by that trailer? It looks like a cheap cross between Bladerunner (Ohhh look, a big city with lots of neon lights) and Twelve Monkeys. Vin Diesel can't act to save his life and nobody else in the trailer seems to be any better. The special effects - nothing new. And by the way, you're not 'first'. I hope that revelation doesn't 'blow your tiny mind'.

I Don't blame them for using it, every one has an idea that would look awesome set to that music. But it really is overused to the point where its becoming distracting. RE: Requiem music

    by slone13

Most of the people in this world have never even seen Requiem for a Dream, much less could tell you where that bit of music was from in the first place. Even fewer still will recall that it's been used in lots of trailers since.

When the studios cut trailers for movies they don't give a shit about how "tired" or "played out" a piece of music is. They make the trailers to appeal to the average movie going public, not the film geeks like us who can cite each and every time a particular song has been used in previous trailers or films.

It's a good song to cut trailers to, pure and simple. The studios aren't concerned about being "original" and this is certainly not the last time we will hear this bit of music used in a trailer. Let's all just accept it and move on. We have far better crap we can bitch about.

chases for action excitement. Ever. Period. You have an entire futuristic sandbox to play in...what possesses a person to insert a gratuitous car chase scene? With the possible exception of the Bourne films, car chases haven't been exciting since the last T.J. Hooker re-run went off the air.

I have always thought that the car chase scene in Terminator 3 was one of the best ever put on film. An army of emergency vehicles chasing a truck, followed by a motercycle chasing a giat crane truck chasing a small truck, followed by a giant fire truck chasing said crane. How does anything in TJ Hooker even remotely compare to that scene? The Bourne chases were crap...you could never see what was going one because of that fucking jerky camera. It made me vomit at the end of the scene it was so nauseating. I challenge anyone to name any car chase scene in the past 5 years that was better than the one in Terminator 3.

...we can disagree about Bourne and T3...that's cool, but it's a bit strange to have to explain that I was being ironic about T.J. Hooker. You see, saying that "car chases haven't been exciting since the last T.J. Hooker re-run went off the air" is just another way of saying that car chases haven't been exciting in a very, very, very, very, very, long time. Read more about irony in your local library.

It looks like a mindless composite of "Blade Runner," "Children of Men," "12 Monkeys," "Akira," "XXX," and "Renaissance." And the Requiem for a Dream theme doesn't help matters because its so cliched it actually reminds you that all of this shit has been done before. Besides, most action films trying to oversell themselves use "Death is the Road to Awe" from "The Fountain." Vin Diesel seems like he's putting his heart into it, but that's about it.

    by lecter1914

to deal with where do I begin. Firstly, it looked pretty good. I dont love or hate Diesel's work. I hated Pitch Black but liked Chronicles despite the fact that the young girl aging to become a full grown Gwen Raiden kinda bothered me but I lived. I liked Fast and Furious, but thought XXX was pretty sad. I even kinda l iked teh Pacifier for what it was. This one looks pretty cool though, especially the girl apparently using her mind to stop a missile. And the music...well...it kinda goes through me now. It irked me with LOTR using it and then Lost using it for every episode trailer. Maybe its just because RFAD is my favorite movie of all time. And lastly...plenty of gays get married to women and have children. Neither of those eliminates the possibility of gayness. THank you.

looks kinda like William Gibson's Count Zero

    by solidfuelstudios

    looks fun.
but it's no "Ernest Hemingway's The Killers"!!!! Damnit!
Why don't these modern "it'll be an action romp with badasses" movies offer a key hook, like the old one's? the hook for this one appears to be: why would a badass mercenary risk his life for some sweet girl with weird abilities.
is that a good hook? It doesn't tug at my heart strings and make me feel like it's offering something interesting.
    hmm.
plus the end shot reminds me of the video game FEAR, which isn't a good thing in my book (tying into a video game appreciation).

Also hits me that this trailer suggests a story that is very close to the plot of Count Zero, by William Gibson.
The key to that book's hook is that the badass merc is a walking frankenstein's monster, so destroyed and rebuilt that he's not sure who he is anymore - but nobody who hires him really knows this. The hook is that as a result of a mercenary life (and little deaths) of abuse, he's become a strange sort of jigsaw puzzle peiced together into hero. He's become this unexpected unknown variable, in the much bigger picture of a kidnapping he's been hired to manage.
    hmm.
So, uh, that's one of my favorite books and i'm curious if there's any connection. hopefully it'll turn out better than johnny mnemonic. Though the over polished metal on the guy's hand reminds me of the overpolished bullshit metal on the villian's thumb in johnny mnemonic.
I'll pay to see it, but i'm betting it'll be a let down forgettable modern flic.

It looks to me like a mix of Blade Runner (one of my favorites ever) and xXx (one of the worst movies I have ever seen). I'm betting it leans toward more of the same stupid Diesel crap. I don't know why I should expect anything else. Pitch Black is Vin diesel's only good movie.

    by kungfuhustler84

Requiem For a Dream was a powerful film with a deep impact. Part of the reason why it worked so well was the soundtrack, and other movies trying to exploit that by using the same powerful music obviously don't have the best to offer, not including their OWN fucking music.

    by epevensie

Doesn't look to be "the same stupid Diesel crap" -

"A cult novel in France, this sci-fi thriller is now being made into a movie by Mathieu Kassovitz. Set in the hidden "flesh and chip" breeding grounds of the first cyborg communities and peopled by Serbian Mafiosi, Babylon Babies has as its hero a hard-boiled leatherneck veteran of Sarajevo named Thoorop who is hired by a mysterious source to escort a young woman named Marie Zorn from Russia to Canada. A garden variety job, he figures. But when Thoorop is offered an even higher fee by another organization, he realizes Marie is no ordinary girl. A schizophrenic and the possible carrier of a new artificial virus, Marie is carrying a mutant embryo created by an American cult that dreams of producing a genetically modified messiah, a dream that spells out the end of human life as we know it.

Inspired by Philip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs, Gilles Deleuze, and other extrapolationists of the future, Babylon Babies unfolds at breakneck speed as Thoorop risks his life to save Marie, whose brain -- linking to the neuromatrix -- loses all limits and becomes the universe itself. Exploring the symbiosis between organic matter and computer power to spin new forms of consciousness, Maurice Dantec rides Nietzsche's prophecy: "Man is something to be overcome.""

Most movie trailers are made by third parties. Directors don't make their own movie trailers. And usually when they do they get shot down by studio exec's. So don't act all hurt about it, go look up the Golden Trailor awards and see who wins those and those are the people to be mad at.

but thanks for the lesson. I'm not hurt. Using that music is cliche, and it's a stupid easy way to try to give a film a feeling of depth in like sixty seconds. I just wish there were more cool trailers that don't follow the exact same formula. One cool trailer I can think of is for the game Gears of War where they used the version of "Mad World" from Donnie Darko. It was creative and interesting.

"Lux Aeterna" - Requiem for a Dream; "The Day Is Yours" - King Henry V; "Victory at Ed Parker's" - Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story; "Trucker Salute" - Hoffa; seem to be the most popular songs to use in a trailer.

Why is it being given the WORST release date of the year?

    by ed okin

It does look good, so why is the studio essentially dumping it? End of August is the date studios give to movies they have no faith in, or to film makers they essentially are pissed off at so they can say "See? We put your movie out in 3,000 theatres and it stiffed. We won't be working together again."

Although Dark Fury wasn't that great of a cartoon. I wish they had of made a live-action version that wasn't as melodramatic. Also someone said that there is another Riddick possibility? King Riddick? That would be cool.
Anyhow, this movie has me intrigued. I like sci-fi, so, on the merits of my enjoyment of Riddick, I will watch this one and hope that it is at least as good.

Vin Diesel - BabylonAD - Trailer Music

    by laughing irishman

Vin Diesel can carry the hell out of good sci-fi action flick. Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick were badass movies.

Babylon AD looks like a great end of the summer Sci-fi flick. I can't wait to see it.

    Trailer Music:

Really? Are you that petty? Waaah...they used an awesome song for an awesome trailer. So what if you've heard it before. It's a good song, and yes, I have seen a Requiem For A Dream and it was a phenomenal film. Dislike Vin, Dislike the Song, but judge the movie on it's script and direction, not just on an actor you don't care for.
