This Trailer For Vin Diesel's BABYLON A.D. Doesn't Look Sucky!!
Merrick here...
IGN has posted the North American trailer for the Mathieu Kassovitz directed BABYLON A.D. - which hits theaters late August.
All kinds of strangeness has been swirling around this film. It's been "coming" forever. There was talk that a particular edit of the movie would be significantly longer overseas (subsequent indications suggested the contrary). And, early marketing footage from the film didn't seem to have much of a pulse. So...it was hard to calibrate expectations.
Now we can see for ourselves, and the results seem...promising (in a guarded sort of way).
WHAT DO YOU THINK???

Unless by 'doesn't look sucky', you mean 'does look sucky'?
-
it will blow our tiny minds.
first? -
Getting past that....it does not look too bad. Maybe a DVD rental or something
-
I'm a sucker for Vin Diesel.
-
In the original Pitch Black he just about had the charisma to sell a leading role that required the strong silent type. Unfortunately nothing else I've seen him in has sold me.
He can't do the tongue in cheek roles or have the cheese of Van-Damme or even Sea-gull, and as a serious actor he has shown nothing positive. Hell even Schwarznegger had 10+years of solid flicks before descending into Kindergarden Cop - which in itself was light years beyond The Pacifier. -
use some different music other than that from 'Requiem from a Dream' ? Really tedious....
-
You were impressed by that trailer? It looks like a cheap cross between Bladerunner (Ohhh look, a big city with lots of neon lights) and Twelve Monkeys. Vin Diesel can't act to save his life and nobody else in the trailer seems to be any better. The special effects - nothing new. And by the way, you're not 'first'. I hope that revelation doesn't 'blow your tiny mind'.
-
just ask him.
DVD time. -
But why for the love of God does every (ok not every!) trailer use the bloody Clint Mansell 'Requiem for a Dream Remix'!
-
Well said sir. I think this was made for the likes of slone13 perhaps?
-
spyro already beat you to that observation if you'd care to read the Talkback. Unless of course it took you 2 minutes to type that, in which case, I'm sorry. No really, I'm sorry it took you 2 minutes to type that.

im blown to pieces

but the trailers have been iffy

Did I miss anything?

LordPorkington, be nice, it took you 7 minutes

to type your response.
-
WHAT? They are still using Requieme? I thought everyone had transfered over to Foutain by now? Geez, its like finding out your buddy still uses Beta and its 1984.
-
I guess the heatwave is making me grouchy. That and the fact that I hate Vin Diesel and anyone who enjoys his body of work. rasALclart - let me buy you a drink to ease your pain son.
-
If it's an action movie starring Vin Diesel, I'll watch it.
Loved the Riddick movies, loved A Man Apart. He needs to stick to what he does. Stay away from crap roles. This movie looks quite entertaining. -
I Don't blame them for using it, every one has an idea that would look awesome set to that music. But it really is overused to the point where its becoming distracting. I was thinking about all the other places I've heard that instead of watching the trailer. Which, while not terribly bad, certainly isn't good.
-
Maybe someday you suckers will be lucky enough to get a movie made just for you, too!
-
it's on porko. A fitting tribute to the return of one of hollywood's finest gay actors
-
Don't trust FOX one bit.

But with FOX you usually end up with crap. I hope for the best

Fox Trailer Guys + Requiem For A Dream Music + ANY FOOTAGE OF AN
by sowasred2012
They could film a rotting corpse for 2 hours, give it to the trailer guys and come out with something that everybody suddenly wants to see. I've been suckered in by too many Fox trailers to not approach this with caution and skepticism.
-
I know this isn't a fashionable thing to say, but I think that THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS can proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with the film it shamelessly ripped off - POINT BREAK.
-
Most of the people in this world have never even seen Requiem for a Dream, much less could tell you where that bit of music was from in the first place. Even fewer still will recall that it's been used in lots of trailers since.
When the studios cut trailers for movies they don't give a shit about how "tired" or "played out" a piece of music is. They make the trailers to appeal to the average movie going public, not the film geeks like us who can cite each and every time a particular song has been used in previous trailers or films.
It's a good song to cut trailers to, pure and simple. The studios aren't concerned about being "original" and this is certainly not the last time we will hear this bit of music used in a trailer. Let's all just accept it and move on. We have far better crap we can bitch about. -
chases for action excitement. Ever. Period. You have an entire futuristic sandbox to play in...what possesses a person to insert a gratuitous car chase scene? With the possible exception of the Bourne films, car chases haven't been exciting since the last T.J. Hooker re-run went off the air.
-
...too, even more so...
-
I'm SO tired of storylines where the hero must transport or protect this special person who's the hope of humanity blah blah blah. It's been done to death. Children of Men, Serenity, The Fifth Element just to name a few...
-
Eat shit, Diesel haters. Especially LordPorkington. I've liked everything he's been in. The guy exudes cool. He still plays D&D, is a gay man working as a straight leading man, usually stars in fairly original sci-fi/action projects, and can kick ass on screen. He's cool by me. Eat shit, haters.
-
Although the directors name rings a bell...wasn't that the guy who directed Nightwatch or something? Am I missing something? Yeah, it looked a little too CGI, but that's OK. As long as it has a good story, I'm there...I think it would be cool to see a movie with Vin Deisel as the bad guy and the Rock as the good guy.
-
and jimmy_009, ranking babylon.. alongside those AWESOME movies shows just who great it will be.
-
I have always thought that the car chase scene in Terminator 3 was one of the best ever put on film. An army of emergency vehicles chasing a truck, followed by a motercycle chasing a giat crane truck chasing a small truck, followed by a giant fire truck chasing said crane. How does anything in TJ Hooker even remotely compare to that scene? The Bourne chases were crap...you could never see what was going one because of that fucking jerky camera. It made me vomit at the end of the scene it was so nauseating. I challenge anyone to name any car chase scene in the past 5 years that was better than the one in Terminator 3.
-
Anyone have one? Seems to be farked.
-
...we can disagree about Bourne and T3...that's cool, but it's a bit strange to have to explain that I was being ironic about T.J. Hooker. You see, saying that "car chases haven't been exciting since the last T.J. Hooker re-run went off the air" is just another way of saying that car chases haven't been exciting in a very, very, very, very, very, long time. Read more about irony in your local library.
-
Meh. I imagine they used all the best FX shots in this trailer.
-
And the end result looks like over CGI'ed, over Dieseled BS. He's an awful actor. And this trailer reflects the originality.
-
Brilliant. Ever think of becoming an agent, Laughing Irishman?
-
i got more of a van damme cyborg vibe from that clip. which doesn't bode well.
-
True
-
When did he come out? Where did this story come from? Just curious.
-
are going to use that music???
seriously?!?!?!? -
You are not alone. I loved Chronicles of Riddick, as well. Would give my left nut to see King Riddick directed by Twohy.
-
I thought was awesome as well. I'm glad to see that they got some slowed down bullet scenes, you don't get enough to that these days.
-
In answer to your question: Thousands upon thousands. It will be used in trailers until the end of time.
-
Riddick + XXX + Eraser.
I hold scant hope, in fact I hold as much hope that this'll be great as I do taht they'll make Riddick 2. i.e. NONE. -
'Cause it sure as shit ISN'T A FUCKING REMAKE. You're all getting what you're asking for, so STFU.
AND YOU FUCKING WANKERS ARE SO DESPERATE TO COMPLAIN THAT YOU HAVE AN ISSUE ABOUT THE TRAILER MUSIC?!?!?!?!?!?!? -
I like Kassovitz more as an actor than a director. But this looks alright. Definitely has some flair going on in some of those shots though, which puts it a bit higher on my priority list than most of the major shitbusters that've been coming out lately.
-
It seems like he's sticking to the warrior with the heart of gold, but only after some innocent people almost die shtick.
-
I love pretty much anything with Vin Diesel in the future! I loved the Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black.
-
It's like the theme from "Rudy." You can put that in any trailer and it'll give people goosebumps.
-
It looks like a mindless composite of "Blade Runner," "Children of Men," "12 Monkeys," "Akira," "XXX," and "Renaissance." And the Requiem for a Dream theme doesn't help matters because its so cliched it actually reminds you that all of this shit has been done before. Besides, most action films trying to oversell themselves use "Death is the Road to Awe" from "The Fountain." Vin Diesel seems like he's putting his heart into it, but that's about it.
-
You totally lost my interest when that 'song' kicked in. Not that I'm going to get emotional over any Vinny D movie, because there's never been a cause to do so. Good EFX though. But EFX alone don't rake 'em in anymore.
-

He might even have married her, I forget. But he's got a child, so I don't think he's gay....
Agree w/everyone else, could be good, but who knows. And the Requiem music needs a rest. -
I liked Chronicles Of Riddick too. Would love to see the sequel. As far as BABYLON A.D. is concerned I think it looks pretty damn good and I'll check it out opening weekend. Kassovitz is a very good director.

Why does Vin talk like a gay black man dying of lung cancer?
by geekyscifianimefreak
hrmmm?
-
to deal with where do I begin. Firstly, it looked pretty good. I dont love or hate Diesel's work. I hated Pitch Black but liked Chronicles despite the fact that the young girl aging to become a full grown Gwen Raiden kinda bothered me but I lived. I liked Fast and Furious, but thought XXX was pretty sad. I even kinda l iked teh Pacifier for what it was. This one looks pretty cool though, especially the girl apparently using her mind to stop a missile. And the music...well...it kinda goes through me now. It irked me with LOTR using it and then Lost using it for every episode trailer. Maybe its just because RFAD is my favorite movie of all time. And lastly...plenty of gays get married to women and have children. Neither of those eliminates the possibility of gayness. THank you.

That Looks Great!!! The Best Film Trailer I Have Seen In Years!!
by media messiah
Welcome back Vinnie!!! That trailer kicks ass!!! That shot of the girl at the end with that RPG coming in and exploding before her was amazing!!!
-
This looks like a stupid version of Children of Men.
-
the Fountain instead. This movie looks just OK.
-
- the Vin Diesel edition?
-
Cause I'm not interested in kid friendly PG-13 bullshit.
-
But why don't they give Michelle Yeoh a shout out? She'll bring in the fanboys, too.
-
Cute. Plus the fact that when the rocket tries to blow her away, she reveals she is a Jedi Master, and sloughs it off like a mosquito. The point? Vin Diesel was under her protection. A 21st century Virgin Mary.
-
A. Cause your hawt.
B. Didn't you see 'The Pacifier?'
C. That music following you around. -
of a film is not entirely ratings. It is possible to be entertained by things that aren't "R". Maybe not for you, but if that were the case, you a dumb prick, and you're not a dumb prick...are you?
-
looks fun.
but it's no "Ernest Hemingway's The Killers"!!!! Damnit!
Why don't these modern "it'll be an action romp with badasses" movies offer a key hook, like the old one's? the hook for this one appears to be: why would a badass mercenary risk his life for some sweet girl with weird abilities.
is that a good hook? It doesn't tug at my heart strings and make me feel like it's offering something interesting.
hmm.
plus the end shot reminds me of the video game FEAR, which isn't a good thing in my book (tying into a video game appreciation).
Also hits me that this trailer suggests a story that is very close to the plot of Count Zero, by William Gibson.
The key to that book's hook is that the badass merc is a walking frankenstein's monster, so destroyed and rebuilt that he's not sure who he is anymore - but nobody who hires him really knows this. The hook is that as a result of a mercenary life (and little deaths) of abuse, he's become a strange sort of jigsaw puzzle peiced together into hero. He's become this unexpected unknown variable, in the much bigger picture of a kidnapping he's been hired to manage.
hmm.
So, uh, that's one of my favorite books and i'm curious if there's any connection. hopefully it'll turn out better than johnny mnemonic. Though the over polished metal on the guy's hand reminds me of the overpolished bullshit metal on the villian's thumb in johnny mnemonic.
I'll pay to see it, but i'm betting it'll be a let down forgettable modern flic. -
for Vin Diesel's sake. I like Vin Diesel.

We all remember how good the Star Wars: Episode 1 trailer looked
by itspook
And that ended badly.
-
already started believing that it has officially been replaced by 28 days later "in the house/in a heartbeat" as the most generic trailer music.
also, that dumb ass aston martin rocket flip from die another day has lost it's first on the " most improbable thing to do with a vehicle on snowy terrain to avoid a projectile" list. sorry bond... -
It looks to me like a mix of Blade Runner (one of my favorites ever) and xXx (one of the worst movies I have ever seen). I'm betting it leans toward more of the same stupid Diesel crap. I don't know why I should expect anything else. Pitch Black is Vin diesel's only good movie.
-
Requiem For a Dream was a powerful film with a deep impact. Part of the reason why it worked so well was the soundtrack, and other movies trying to exploit that by using the same powerful music obviously don't have the best to offer, not including their OWN fucking music.
-
Doesn't look to be "the same stupid Diesel crap" -
"A cult novel in France, this sci-fi thriller is now being made into a movie by Mathieu Kassovitz. Set in the hidden "flesh and chip" breeding grounds of the first cyborg communities and peopled by Serbian Mafiosi, Babylon Babies has as its hero a hard-boiled leatherneck veteran of Sarajevo named Thoorop who is hired by a mysterious source to escort a young woman named Marie Zorn from Russia to Canada. A garden variety job, he figures. But when Thoorop is offered an even higher fee by another organization, he realizes Marie is no ordinary girl. A schizophrenic and the possible carrier of a new artificial virus, Marie is carrying a mutant embryo created by an American cult that dreams of producing a genetically modified messiah, a dream that spells out the end of human life as we know it.
Inspired by Philip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs, Gilles Deleuze, and other extrapolationists of the future, Babylon Babies unfolds at breakneck speed as Thoorop risks his life to save Marie, whose brain -- linking to the neuromatrix -- loses all limits and becomes the universe itself. Exploring the symbiosis between organic matter and computer power to spin new forms of consciousness, Maurice Dantec rides Nietzsche's prophecy: "Man is something to be overcome."" -
Most movie trailers are made by third parties. Directors don't make their own movie trailers. And usually when they do they get shot down by studio exec's. So don't act all hurt about it, go look up the Golden Trailor awards and see who wins those and those are the people to be mad at.
-
(or have I already been savaged?)
-
but thanks for the lesson. I'm not hurt. Using that music is cliche, and it's a stupid easy way to try to give a film a feeling of depth in like sixty seconds. I just wish there were more cool trailers that don't follow the exact same formula. One cool trailer I can think of is for the game Gears of War where they used the version of "Mad World" from Donnie Darko. It was creative and interesting.
-
"Lux Aeterna" - Requiem for a Dream; "The Day Is Yours" - King Henry V; "Victory at Ed Parker's" - Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story; "Trucker Salute" - Hoffa; seem to be the most popular songs to use in a trailer.
-
...who has the charisma of a plastic dog turd. I thought the camera work looked really nice and there was plenty of atmosphere. The music is "Requiem for a Tower" btw and its a fucking great track to cut to.
-
Giggle...Giggle...Fart

used to be that they ripped off "Aliens" for trailer music...
by ironhelix
...and i am now just as sick of them ripping off "Requiem for a Dream".
-
As far as trailers go, I like Vin Diesel, and the trailer shows some promise, I just hope it delivers.
-
C'mon guys...the role was made for him.
-
...Matrix. Not necessarily a bad thing. Mark me down as intrigued.
-
but wasn't Babylon A.D. an L. Ron Hubbard book? If not then I may gives this a chance. If it is, then I'll be giving my money to someone who isn't sucking Scientology's dick.
-
more super powers! That music though, ugh.
-
ok, so maybe it wouldn't fit the tone. :)
I think it could be a cool movie. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. -
The music is 'Lux Aeterna' by Clint Mansell. The wonderful Mister Oakenfold merely sampled it for 'Zoo York'.Both are top tunes in their own right, but wa-a-ay overused. It's the new 'Carmina Burana'...
-
So what if he's as gay as Christmas? He's a top baldy action bloke and we need more of 'em, 'cos is Bruce semi-retired and Statham is working for food!Yay, Vin! Love ya, man! (in a non-homo way, natch.)
-
fraid not friend, as ReelHead already pointed out that's "Requiem for a Tower," the orchestral re-recording of "Lux Aeterna" used in pretty much all of the promotional materials for LOTR:TTT
-
balls! it looks like crap.
-
Attack of the Summer Blockbusters no one cares about!!!
Seriously...how does Brendan Fraser have TWO big summer movies coming out? -
fortunately vin diesel has found another movie where he doesn't need to be a good actor. oh yeah, and Queensland Rules

by thebearovingian
Vin Diesel has two speeds: walk and kill.If you rearrange the letters in Vin Diesel it reveals his credo: "I End Lives."Vin Diesel is the only man to ever defeat a brick wall in a game of tennis.Pure gold, my friends. This new movie looks shitty.
-
Kudos Fox.
-
The guy did a great job with his RIDDICK: ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY game a few years back.
I'm all in favor of him expanding his film universes in games if he can think of a cool angle to do so. -
I'm actually kind of interested to see this film. The premise is a bit out there, especially as it relates to the girl Vin is shepherding. They might've dumbed the story down a little, I don't know, but I hope it gives us something a little weird.
We'll see. -
what I meant was: I like R-rated sci-fi-action movies a lot more than toned down PG-13 ones.
-
please...this looks like half the trailers and lame ass plots we've seen already
-
Love his French films, especially La Haine and Red River, was'nt overly impressed with Gothika, but the guy can shoot with style, his acting and writing credentials are pretty respectable too. Looking forward to seeing more of this, looks promising from the trailer.
-
Looks a bit iffy, but I shall put a little faith in Kassovitz. Always liked his acting and directing efforts. I am not a Vin Diesel hater either, Riddick is an awesome character, but that is pretty much the only character he can play well.
-
probably on DVD, but I'll check it out. I think I saw a necro-whozzi-what in the background at the 1:23 mark.
-
I didn't think Universal greenlighted this. Well, cool.
-
Bruce Willis > Vin Diesel
-
movie would be cool beans.
-
And I love me my Walter B., but Chris fucking Tucker...that movie is a mixed bag for me.And since I haven't seen this one, I have no idea if it'll be better or worse than Fifth Element. But clearly the tone is different between the two movies (from what I can tell from the trailer anyways...), so I don't think one can compare the two.
-
in this forum that displays the newest message a kilometer below the oldest one, I'm on. Watched XXX again the other day and Diesel kicks ass in every scene. Give me Vinnie and cheap Sci Fi, I'm there. Also, I didn't know he was gay. What a shock.
-
...fits the look and feel of this movie even less than it fit Lord of the Rings.
"Leave Clint Mansell ALONE!!" -
It does look good, so why is the studio essentially dumping it? End of August is the date studios give to movies they have no faith in, or to film makers they essentially are pissed off at so they can say "See? We put your movie out in 3,000 theatres and it stiffed. We won't be working together again."
-
Also, Vin Diesel's last movie did over 100 million. Why has he waited 3 years to do another? This will be a REAL test of whether he can still carry a movie.
-
Although Dark Fury wasn't that great of a cartoon. I wish they had of made a live-action version that wasn't as melodramatic. Also someone said that there is another Riddick possibility? King Riddick? That would be cool.
Anyhow, this movie has me intrigued. I like sci-fi, so, on the merits of my enjoyment of Riddick, I will watch this one and hope that it is at least as good. -
Hey man if your still here, look up the song Switchback by the band Celldweller. Its used in like every action movie trailer. Muse is getting played in a lot of trailers as well, and they are much more deserving then that.
-
We all know that Mathieu Kassovitz is that guy from Fifth Element right? Man I love Fifth Element. Does anyone know if Walter B distinced himself from that movie for some reason? Because I have the soundtrack from it, and all of his dialog is replaced by some british dude?
-
Vin Diesel can carry the hell out of good sci-fi action flick. Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick were badass movies.
Babylon AD looks like a great end of the summer Sci-fi flick. I can't wait to see it.
Trailer Music:
Really? Are you that petty? Waaah...they used an awesome song for an awesome trailer. So what if you've heard it before. It's a good song, and yes, I have seen a Requiem For A Dream and it was a phenomenal film. Dislike Vin, Dislike the Song, but judge the movie on it's script and direction, not just on an actor you don't care for. -
Vin's given us some good movies. Some bad ones too. But I love the idea of Riddick, not always the execution, wanted to see the other 2 movies get made though, Love the look of this and that its not a franchise.
-
I've heard variations on it before but c'mon Vin DOES have a great voice. And there are few, very few good action stars today. I hope it turns out to be a critical darling....for an action movie. And it WILLBE BETTER THAN TRANSFORMERS
-
ing.com SUCKS! Small, crappy videos that stream like I'm connected to it with a 28.8 dial up in 1997! As I write this, it's still only halfway loaded! WTF?! Is it too much to ask for a damn trailer to be posted in glorious quicktime and be done fuckin' around with these other shitheads who can't seem to run a decent streaming site?! Why would any production company trust these morons with their precious trailer when people can't even see it properly?!
-
I think the fact that there are so many responses about the Requiem music just shows how bad thats become. Its a lovely song. And I think it works better set to Sport Highlights myself. But find something else for trailers.
-
I'll check it out.
-
Jun 14, 2008 4:29:24 AM CDT
Looks a helluva lot better than the crappy PUNISHER 3 trailer...
by big dumb ape
And I like Vin, so solely on a trailer versus trailer basis, I'd rather see this instead.
