I wonder if any of the kids will miss the sarcasm, think you really think DH is the second funniest show on TV and rip you a new one for it. by fight this generation

have been a mite disappointing, least in my eyes. Sure, I laughed throughout each, but thus far this season I haven't busted out in hysterics, haven't gotten that VB ab workout from a laughing jag, haven't had to replay a scene 'cuz tears welled up in my eyes from from the sheer go for baroque zaniness of a particular gag or Brock-centric action set-piece. Here's hoping that a solely Hammer penned episode will turn that trick, or maybe they need a couple weeks to get back in the swing of things.

I haven't been big on this season. The first episode seemed like a giant piece of exposition, to save the trouble of having to explain things throughout the season. The second was funnier, but maybe not as good plot wise. I sort of liked the idea of Dr. Venture as a supervillain throughout the season, and it could still happen, I suppose.

I really enjoyed this episode (SPOILERS)...

    by danielkurland

Much like last week, it wasn't the funniest, but in terms of story development, it's great. The whole concept of Dr. Venture just being an awful person, so he should become a villain (let alone one arching his own brother), is wonderful and I really hope this is explored further. I just love shows that evolve and change, and if this one were to end up with Venture and Monarch both being villains independent of each other, and competing to see who was the better villain, there's tons of potential there.

    Fight This Generation...

    by danielkurland

I can understand your problems, but unfortunately, I don't think it's a matter of them "finding their groove." Hammer and Publick seldomly write the episodes in order in which case it's not like episode 3 means they've had two episodes to "brush up." They were even working on season 4 episodes before season 3 was entirely done. I personally think this would be more confusing for them in terms of the continuity and such, but it seems to work. What I'm saying though is that episode 2 could have actually been the LAST episode written this season, and therefore the most polished (which isn't the case due to the April Fools prank showing it's been done for a bit, but you get my point).

One of the best jokes in the series is how they retain their goofy, off the wall sound effects while the actions are adult and serious. The only episode I'll agree on that is subpar is "Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner", and they at least also agree on that fact.

is completely worthless. There's still some good jokes, but for whatever reason it just feels different. Like you're looking at your watching waiting for it to end. Scooby Doo

    by zerocorpse

That was a great episode! Each of the Scooby Doo gang was a famous murderer or criminal. I thought the idea that Shaggy was the Son of Sam and Scooby was the "talking dog" was rather inspired! Velva's analog as the man-hater who tried to kill Andy Warhol was pretty clever, too.
The episode also pushed along the "clones" story a bit, and cleared up some questions about Hank & Dean.
If you thought they were just rip-offs of the Scooby Doo gang, then you missed the whole point.

Not the best episode and in general I hate the "Siseneg/Genesis" type plot where major changes occur and then are all undone and the status quo is maintained by the end of the episode. Also known as the "almost every season six Star Trek: the Next Generation style episode".It is interesting thought hat someone could easily mistake the self centered Rusty and his callous disregard for his cloved sons for a villain.I wonder if the army guys missing shoe will be a recurring character. or if scraping dead lizard men off the fence is a recurring problem.Remember the Harvey Birdman Quest parody and the witness swearing in: "Name: Lizard Man. Occupation: Lizard Man."

When this went up I checked in and there were no comments up yet, but rather than dash off a two word first post, I actually wrote three paragraphs and by the time I clicked post there were five comments ahead of me.But that's what I wanted to say. in that "sixth!' post I mentioned that Jonny Quest's first name was misspelled in the article. Well, actually "Johnny" is the correct accepted spelling, so maybe the variant Jonny is the misspelling. Anyway, I posted that "Jonny has no H".A little while later it actually dawned on me WHY this show, which is, after all, at the core a Jonny Quest parody, is so brutal in portraying the "real" Jonny Quest as a drug addict going through withdrawal jitters. Unless I'm actually the last person on earth to get it, he's going cold turkey because... Jonny had no "H"!Damn that's clever.

    Dr. Girlfriend's Secret

    by inactionman

I think the theme of this season is to explore more of the histories and back stories of the characters.

I do not think we have seen Dr. Girlfriend's true secret. I've said it before elsewhere and I'll say it here again. I think Dr. Girlfriend is King Gorilla's Daughter. Dr. Girlfriend is going to insist that The Monarch bust him out of jail. KG will cause The Monarch a lot of in-law problems and henchman morale problems with KG running around the cocoon raping and eviscerating henchmen. By the end of the season Rusty and the boys will end up killing KG by accident or at least get blamed for it and Dr. GF will insist that The Monarch go back to arching the Ventures.

Jackson's 36 and Doc's 32, according to imdb. AS a thirtysomething myself, it seems that a lot of the jokes are focused like laser beams into my brain; for example, one of the cut scenes was Colonel Gentleman (the Sean COnneryish character) recounting a list of toys he wished would make a comeback; it read like my closet/wish list from 1982.

Committed to all of his bit parts in Venture's lie. With this show and South Park, people seem to hate the show if they try anything remotely different or evolutionary. by napoleon park

As a Jonny Quast fan who watched the original run of the series in prime time on Thursday nights at 8:00 PM and never missed an episode (except the one time I was stuck at a friends house and the little square watched Daniel Boone instead) and bought all the JQ comics from Comico, I'm 55 and i'm surprised that anyone younger than the baby boomer generation 'gets' the point of a Jonny Quest parody show. A lot of the concept also lean heavily on '60s Marvel comics characters like the FF parody or Dr, Orpheus, clearly a Dr. Strange take-off.Though I see Aquatarkusman's point about a lot of the Gen X aimed humor on the show. (Especially that upcoming GI Joe spoof we've seen previewed.)If "these kids these days" don't 'get' The Ventures Brothers, that's their loss and they needs an edjumacation. And DerL, the point of the Scooby spoof wasn't that they were bad, but the specific criminals they were targeting. Daphne as Patty Hearst, etc. You got that, right?

DanielKurland KG as Dr. GF's father

    by inactionman

Actually I think we have received several hints on this. 1.)King Gorilla's very emotional reaction to The Monarch's exclaiming how much he loved Dr. GF. This caused KG to go against Guild orders and assist The Monarch in his prison escape. 2.)Phantom Limb killed all of The Monarch's prison buddies except King Gorilla in "Showdown at Cremation Creek Part 1.Why not kill KG especially since he was the one that defied guild orders. The reason would be that Phantom Limb would not want to upset Dr. Girlfriend by killing King Gorilla because he wanted to win her back. 3.)Dr. Girlfriend and King Gorilla are both voice by Doc Hammer. There is a great deal of similarity between the two characters voices, accents and inflections. 4.)Dr. Girlfriend's father was not present to give Dr. GF away at her wedding. Why, because he is in prison and could not attend.

It's got some balls-out funny moments in each episode, and some wicked-cool pop culture homages for all us geeks. Kids, don't contrast and compare. I mean unless you LIKE sounding like elitist prigs. You don't wanna do that, right? There are a few decent animated comedy programs that are each good in their own ways. For instance, I find Boondocks to be hysterical, just in a different, more satirical vein.

Napolean, I agree with you 100%.

I'm 23, and while I feel I "get" most of the references in VB, I would much rather ask my folks

about the stuff that slips by (They are VB fans as well), than to have another modern pop culture

reference wedged in that no one will understand or remember one month from now.

    InActionMan:

Two more hints at KG being Dr. Girlfriends father.

In "Tag Sale-You're it!" Pete White and Quizboy talk about a rumor that DG has a transplanted baboon

uterus. Speaking of which DG = Dr. Girlfriend KG = King Gorilla. I would have thought that was

reaching until I read that post above about "Jonny has no H."

I can't remember the exact episode but Brock comes across DG in the monarch's cocoon and she

basically throws herself at him, and he denies her saying "Thaaats okay..." I'll admit I think he

was chasing the Monarch at the time, but anyone who knows brock's character knows he is almost never

too busy and the woman is never too skanky. The prostitute when they go to Mexico or Lieutenant

Baldavitch (enough said right there.) It just the way he reacts to DG with such disgust that it

makes you think maybe he knows something we don't.

Thanx for the Ventures Brothers love, Herc.

    by napoleon park

Even though this talk-back didn't even make the top ten list, Herc refrained from posting anything new for a few days so this would stay at the top of the Coaxial Column. subtle promotion, but certainly appreciated. Good on ya, Mighty Hercules.

    by silent have

How can anyone complain about the show? Its innovative and always funny. Honestly its so good I can't believe they keep renewing it because most things this good get canceled.

There's enough blood here to print a KISS comic.

    I'm kind of surprised

    by spicypeanut

That all you older chaps think those of us in our "20s" can't just, well, go ahead and get us a copy of Jonny Quest on dvd. Or, ya know, READ a Marvel tpb of all those old 60s comics. Or maybe we watched the reruns growing up as well as our GI Joe and Transformers.

No offense to anyone, but give us a little credit here.

That being said, this show just gets better. I don't see how you can complain unless you just have no taste at all.

Why sir, I'm not even 20 years old...

    by loodabagel

And I'm actually more familiar with Johnny Quest, Scooby Doo and old Marvel comics than those funky 80's cartoons. Back in the early to mid 90's, not only did we have cable, but Cartoon Network always showed cool cartoons from the sixties. The local channels would also put on old Looney Tunes, reruns of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, or the X-Men cartoon on at 6 on Saturdays. Good times. Good times. Last I checked, they had switched those out with weird "Montana News" type shows. Some fat ass had a cooking show, and Ninja Turtles was replaced with Dijimon and Dijimon was replaced with weird, trashy cartoons aimed at girls. Damn, that's a painful memory.

    DVR missed first few mins

    by dazzler69

Not sure why they air ep's a couple of mins early on network. Glad you posted the link to the full ep. I think Venture Bro's deserves to be primetime. It's better than Simpsons.

Networks Start Eps. Early To Defeat TIVOing

    by mdf2

There was an article about it in my local newspaper last year.

A lot of networks started staggering their 'big-gun' shows to discourage people from TIVOing them, and watching them 'live'.

Of Course, They Sometimes Start Them Later, Too

    by mdf2

Of course, being Canadian, I don't get Cartoon Network. In some cases, it could be that your clock is wrong -- I always seem to set mine wrong.

    Well, you see kids,

    by napoleon park

you're right,, of course, you know OF the properties the VB parody. Spicypeanut, you can read the Kirby FF and the ditko Dr. Strange or watch the original run of Jonny Quest on DVD - and you certainly should - you just can't feel NOSTALGIC about it, which I'll retroactively pretend was my point. and loodabagel, you can be familiar with "JohHny" Quest as far as the day is long, now come back when you're familiar enough to actually spell it. Dazz, you'd think so, but Brock Samson with a towel draped over his erection? No, not in primetime on most cable outfits. Past ten, maybe, HBO maybe... but I wouldn't count on it. How many other cable nets actually have the word [adult] in their name? That's a great defense for getting away with stuff like this.
