Upcoming Pacino project, CITY BY THE SEA
Here's a project that I haven't heard all that much about, but that I've been digging around a bit on. It's called CITY BY THE SEA, and right now Michael Caton-Jones is attached to direct. Michael's one of them directors that's had a bit of a spotty record, but I think his good, so far, out shines the disappointments. I mean... I really dug MEMPHIS BELLE, ROB ROY, THIS BOY'S LIFE and even DOC HOLLYWOOD. Whereas I think his THE JACKAL really really stunk it up, though I believe that project was one of those.... "WHY THE HELL IS THIS BEING REMADE" projects that always stuns me.
Anyways, it's over there at them wacky Warner Brothers, and all I know is that Al Pacino plays a New York homicide detective (Vincent Lamarca) who's son is accused of being a cop killer. Naturally he wants to find his brat before other, less friendly cops come down on the kid. Apparently the kid is a bit freaked on drugs, been one of them troubled youths we hear so much about. I like Al Pacino as a cop movies (and the as gangster movies) and it's been a few years since the last one. Right? Let's see was it HEAT? Was that the last one? I don't know, but this seems like a story that Al can sink his teeth into, alot will just depend on the kid, he's in his late teens/early twenties... So it could be anyone from Leo to Josh Hartnett... Who knows, eh? So what have you folks heard about this one?

If I am not mistaken, this film is based on true events. I seem to remember an article in either Esquire or maybe the NY Times Magazine or possibly GQ that told the REAL story. Who cares? Anything Pacino does is something I will be sure to see!!!

I think Pacino's best cop/detective role is in SEA OF LOVE. This was a comeback of sorts for Al. His film prior to this was the abysmal 1985 flop REVOLUTION. After the failure of this, Pacino returned to the stage, appearing in such productions as Joseph Papp's Shakespeare in the Park JULIUS CAESAR. Luckily, SEA OF LOVE gave Pacino his best role in years: that of a weary, divorced cop who can't seem to get his wife out of his mind (in the TV version, the wife is seen, played by Lorraine Bracco; in the theatrical release, the wife is only mentioned). The cop is assigned to find the murderer of married men, the only evidence at the crime scene is an old 45 of Phil Phillips's SEA OF LOVE. This is kinda, but not really, an early version of BASIC INSTINCT, what with the grisly murders, a blonde suspect (Ellen Barkin), and the cop assigned to the case who falls in love with her, which could mean fatal results.

Al Pacino's best cop role was easily SERPICO, but that's beside the point. The important thing here is that Al seems to be back into the swing of things. After doing not that much at all since HEAT, he's got what looks to be some quality projects ahead of him (which is GREAT news for us). Oliver Stone's ANY GIVEN SUNDAY is going to be a lot better than most people are anticipating. Michael Mann's MAN OF THE PEOPLE (which I believe has just had its name changed) looks like it's going to be a tremendous showcase for Al character. And now CITY BY THE SEA looks as though it can turn out to be one great cop drama (assuming this so-so director can pull it off). All in all, it's great to see Al back. He's one of the most intensely gifted actors we will ever see.

We all know Pacino is only as good as his director. I don't see what the big deal over him is. Sure he was awesome in Godfather and Godfather II. And yes I know there were three movies in that story. Sure he was great in Scent of a Woman...but HEAT? Whoa! I had to put a clothespin over my nose. Pacino is great when he is fined and edited and guided with a firm hand...otherwise he is as unstable as Mankind's bane, the Atom. Think of a forest fire raging all out of control, spreading with the winds. Awesomely destructive and horrific to behold. Now think of another fire...this one in a forest...surrounded by rocks and kept small, fed by twigs and dry brush, with someone frying some freshly dressed fish over it, or perhaps a rabbit. Bottom line...If Pacino is to be great, he has to be reined in like a horse. WHOA, NELLIE! End Transmission.

Hey Harry how about a poll on who is better?

I've heard from a close source Leo is going to play the troubled teen. This is from a source which is very close to the movie. I have heard about this movie for a while but I guess now they are finally getting around to filming the darn thing.

Hey, can everyone stop persecuting me over my religious choices!
by wittman
I am tired of people knocking me like the above guy. All I want to do is contribute my piece on this fine site? Can I do that without people emailing me hate mail and slurring my good name on AICN and elsewhere? I feel sorry for all you closed minded people. And no, I have never met Pacino, though his role in HEAT was phenomenal, despite what you folks say. GET OVER IT!!!!!

I know a tech who is running the AVIDS for this production. He has seen the film and met Micheal Mann. Michael Mann is a dick and the movie is awesome. (In the techs opinion)
-
I met Michael Mann, too. He's shorter than I expected. He has a
great Chicago accent. I don't care if some AVID tech thinks he's a dick. His films are superb. I'm glad HEAT is hitting DVD next month. Now I don't have to hit that region 2. I just wish he had the time to give us some special editions. The extended version with more Michael Cerrito (Tom Sizemore) that was prepared for and dumped by NBC. And what about MANHUNTER? THE KEEP? DVD? At least get the fucking soundtracks released. Anyone get tickets for ROGER WATERS at ROSEMONT? I sure didn't. Sold out in under 2 minutes. I love TicketMaster! -
Pacino was intended to play a loudmouth police officer, with that in mind you must know that Michael Mann didnt include a very important scene where Vincent Hannah takes pills. He is addicted to drugs, just so he can be able to handle his work. Michael Mann wanted to include that scene when HEAT was aired on NBC, but the editors on NBC didnt bother to listen to Mann and didnt include that scene including others. Mann thought they ruined his film, and therefor he had his name replaced by another name. I hope he included that scene in the DVD version, it would help people understand Vincents uncontrolled manerisms.
