Pixar's John Carter of Mars becoming a reality?

Published at:  Jun 07, 2008 6:19:53 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Back when Harry was working on a John Carter project I dove into the Edgar Rice Burroughs series and fell in love with this universe. Bizarre, fantastic, huge...

There's a reason they've been trying to make this movie almost since the beginning of the artform. It's a massive undertaking, huge spectacle and it is unlike anything we've seen on the screen even still to this day.

It's been known that Pixar has had the rights to John Carter for some time now... we assume it's going to be animated, but Pixar's doing that live-action Brad Bird movie at some point, so could it be live action? We still don't have answers to these questions, but what we do have is our first indication that the project is moving forward.

WALL-E's Andrew Stanton let it drop to the Pixar blog that he is developing John Carter of Mars, writing it at this very moment no less.

Exciting times. I've been lucky enough to meet Stanton a few times over this last year, all connected to events surrounding Wall-E, and he's a genuine geek, like us. He's the real deal and Wall-E looks like it's going to be a worthy addition to the outstanding Pixar library. This is terrific news!

Is AICN going down the toilet?

Is Pixar willing to make a multi-movie series though?

    by drath

They don't seem to like sequels--which is fine since most of their movies don't need them (but I want my INCREDIBLES sequels dammit--and yes, that's plural!). John Carter's Barsoom took more than one book to cover, and it'd be very truncated to stuff everything into one movie. Also how greatly will the change things? They might make a very entertaining movie, but will they make John Carter as the franchise he should be? Tough questions, I'm still not sure if they'll do it right, especially since the live action question is still unclear. I'll give 'em this though, I don't think they'll give us the empty spectacle that every other studio would probably provide. When the best Hollywood can do is the staged posturing of 300, you know there's a problem.

Expect comical Tharks and cute, talking baby White Apes & Banths

    by grampageezer

Pixar's main market are children's movies. So expect John Carter of Mars to be exactly that - a movie made for kids.

They will probably do to Carter what Disney did to Tarzan and make it a touching little story with cute talking animals and slapstick humor scattered throughout. I'm sure Pixar will also over-exaggerate the characters features and bodies like they did in The Incredibles.

Don't get me wrong, I love Pixar's CG cartoons, but personally, I wish some studio would have the guts to do a serious live-action flick with CG Martian backgrounds in the vein of 300 or Sky Captain.

But you can bet after Pixar, John Carter will forever be labled as a "children's character' and no one will touch it.

    by ingeld

Harry's sold the site and vanished into thick air. If it is really sold, I bet Harry will stay on to run it. His reason for selling it will be that he made a ton of money and now he can get back to what he really likes to do--blogging and talking about movies. Some suit will be worrying about operations. This will be good for a few months until the suits decides to change the site to suit themselves. Harry will argue but it will be out of his control. Then he will realize he has lost the one thing he really loved. Then he will truly be gone. So sad.

The rumors of the site being sold to Paramount, UA or one of the other studios are true, but the "studio" involved is actually a shell for Homeland Security. Cheney got wind of the level of Dubya hatred that always erupted whenever a political film was TB'd, and decided to keep a gimlet eye on all of the "traitors". It's all part of the Neo-con plan. You don't actually BELIEVE they'll accept the results of a general election, do you? Prepare for a rash of "terrorist" attacks, a martial law clampdown and "temporarily resheduling" of the election about one week before it was supposed to actually take place. To all of those screaming "Sell out!"

    by paul bucciarelli

Seriously, go fuck yourselves. Better yet, start your own movie site. In a few years when you decide that you're tired of having every sentence analyzed for grammatical errors. When you're tired of having to read constantly negative posts from movie consumers who despite have watched every behind-the-scenes DVD extra featurette, have no idea what really goes into the filmmaking process. When you've responded to the umpteenth post from a so-called movie lover that's never taken the time to see anything made before George Lucas and Ridley Scott came along and thinks that Rio Bravo is a brand of salsa. When you've been offered a handsome sum of money that can help you find your way throught this mess of an economy.
Then you can be a sell-out too and have to defend your actions against bitter, never had the balls or brains to be anything other than a spectator assholes like all of you complaining. One more thing: Qjuit thinking of yourselves and this site as being so damned important. Despite the constnt talk of suits and plants, you are a maybe a focus group for marketing purposes. Other than that you are ticket and DVD buyers only. That's where your relationship to the industry ends.

John Carter: issues of racism and style

    by gonzo1006

I'm glad to see this project moving forward again, but ever since I've heard of a film adaptation of the books I've wondered how the filmmakers would address the extremely prominent issues of race that permeate the series. It would be easiest just to focus on the love story for the film, but these themes are still quite obvious in the first three books. John Carter is a captain in the Civil War and embodies somewhat of a romanticized view of Southern ideals. The whole concept of the Green, Red, Yellow, Black, and White (am I missing any?) men of Mars and the conflicts between them seem to be heavily based on race (or at the least religious beliefs). The fact that John Carter is the caucasian savior of Mars could lead to a clusterfuck of Last Samurai proportions. At the same time, Carter's unification of the races and the moments when he changes his appearance to avoid standing out are too good to pass up. It's a tough thing to tackle, even if it is just going on the the background, but I hope Pixar has the guts to address the issue.

As to the style of the film, it will be interesting to see how the fight scenes and the visuals play out. I always imagined Carter's fights as some kind of Wuxia style battles, but I think that could end up looking pretty goofy on screen. And if anyone could come up with a unique visual interpretation of Mars, it would be Pixar, but I can't help but think that a Frazetta-infuenced style (much like Alan Lee's visual influence on the LOTR films), would be completely and absolutely badass. So many of these CGI world films fail because they lack consistency in their visuals, and the Frazetta style would be both a solid basis and a unique visual interpretation.

Glad to see it's still on a to do list. Also I don't believe anyone is this TB. I've heard such bull shit over the years from people who post here: Blind hate for movies for no reason, TBers faking movie reviews when they haven't seen the movie. And loads other crap and lies. So when a hand full of ass holes claim the sites has been sold and have "insiders" I automatically roll my eyes. I'll wait till something is actually confirmed before I judge. Oh yeah go Pixar John Carter of Mars could be one movie that fans will dislike but we shall see.

    Another atempt?

    by thead

THere's been a bunch of recent attempts that didn't go anywhere. There's even some concept art online that Ninth Ray studio's did (a bunch of people that worked on the star wars prequel concept art mostly). I'd have to look for the links but it was certainly interesting. one was worked on between December 2004 – March 2006 for paramount with Director Jon Favreau (Iron Man) . Here's at least one piece of concept art: http://homepage.mac.com/damaggio/.Pi...0of%20Mars.jpg
    and a storyboard: http://web.mac.com/dkrentz1/iWeb/davidkrentz/StoryBoards_files/34_pg4.jpg

What I'm unclear on is if any of the art carried over to disney. IMDB still lists Ninthrays Art team in it's credits but we all know how accurate IMDB listings can be, especially for a movie in preproduction.

Believe it or not, I've never actually set down to read John Carter of Mars. I know, I know--I should just turn in my geek card right now.Still, being a tarzan fan, I can tell you that Edgar Rice Burroughs, being a product of his time, presented a lot of prejudicial, racist themes in Tarzan as well, to say nothing of the antiquated notions concerning aristocracy and familial traits. Still, they were able to white wash much of Tarzan in Greystoke: The Legendof Tarzan and the untold numbers of other adamptations. From what you have described about John Carter of Mars doesn't sound all that different from the myriad of "white aristocrat tames the black savages and the dark jungle" themes that were running through Burroughs' Tarzan novels. My guess is that one would just characterize the race wars in Carter as negative and Carter's desire to unite everyone as a positive thing. As for Carter being white, so long as its played down, ala Tarzan, I doubt most people, beyond the all-too sensitive "we are special people" groups, will actually even notice. They'll be too caught up in the "racism is bad" motiff, to say nothing of the awesome visuals and interesting setting.

Pixar going adult animation on Mars? wow!

    by pipergates

But if they do it they're normal kiddie cartoon way not so sure. I bet it would still be worthwhile, but this is the right property for them to grow up on, go for a more realistic graphic novel style of animation...I can just imagine them doing Mars in a style like what Heavy Metal could have been. With all the Pixar atenttion to detail and character, that would be amazing.

    by doctorratman

I loved the Burroughs stories, but, sadly, this'l never work unless the guys at Pixar re-intrduce the books to the world...most folks over the age of thirty have never heard of John Carter (or think it's another Terminator movie done by someone who doesn't use spell-check).
These guys would have to ramp up the PR even higher than what Cameron has done with his forthcoming (and like, G&R's Chinese Democracy, in the seemingly endless limbo of perpetual pre-release) Avatar.
Don't get me wrong...I WANT Pixar to succeed at this...but I ain't holding my breath.

Oh, and about the 'Sale' of AICN, maybe, just maybe UA snatched it up to make 'IASN'.. It Ain't Scientology News.com, with all the updates about Valkyrie and Battlefield Earth 2: The Search For More Cultists.

    by hktelemacher

DO genuine geeks make the best movies? I don't know. Lately, and for the time being, I'm seeing them as making fun but ultimately unimportant movies. I was revelling in The Wild Bunch again last night and it cemented the fact that the era of the serious director is long, long gone. It's no longer an art form about pushing ahead, it's turning into (at least for the 35 and under crowd) an art form about outwardly cataloging your childhood VHS library. I defend a lot of these throwback movies because they're good watching, and I like that these guys have a real passion for genre and history that's definitely better than someone with superior contempt for the material, but where have all the Peckinpahs gone? Did they even really exist?

"And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure, similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life. She did not see me at first, but just as she was disappearing through the portal of the building which was to be her prison she turned, and her eyes met mine. Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Her skin was of a light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a strangely enhancing effect.

She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure."

Granted, that description leaves it open to a bit interpretation, but virtually every artist who's tried to illustrate Barsoom has portrayed the Martian women as very curvy. This holds true for Frank Frazetta, Michael Whelan, Frank Cho, Joe Jusko and all the comic books and model kits.

Any image search online using "dejah thoris" will yield results which bear this out in most cases.

And you're wrong about Crudup -- he'd be great (right age, acting chops and the physique) and he's the spitting image of the Whelan book cover version.

Nice Doc- I like the direct text quote- though I still disagree

    by 900lbgorilla

I haven’t read that passage in years- but remember it like it was yesterday when I re-read that post.

I still strongly disagree because Dejah is clearly described as having a “slender, girlish figure” and “her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite”. This is not a Marilyn or heavily curved woman by any means - I think a young Sophie Marceau facially/carriage wise would be close….though maybe too tall. It’s not that I have anything against curvy women – heck Dejah could have a nice …uh chest – but she is clearly slim and regal appearing…and not a full figured sex bomb type. (Though it sounds like she has full lips).

Also Wheelan and Frezetta don’t draw her at all alike. Frazetta draws her like just about every other Frazetta girl- very very curvy- and not AT ALL like Burroughs describes her. Whelan draws her accurately- she is slender though with a nice chest.

On a sidenote I think most Barsoom art is rather poor- and certainly very inaccurate. Wheelan is easily the most true to the description – indeed really the only one who is even worth mentioning as such (and no wonder, he was a HUGE fan of the novels and was sketching this before college). Frazetta may not be “poor” as art (he is after all Frazetta), but he is completely inaccurate as I mentioned and frankly not nearly as inspiring as Burroughs own decriptions (again keep Frazetta in Conan where he shines)…and nearly everyone else is just bad.

On Crudup, maybe if he worked out…a lot, and they cast smaller men to play the Martians he would be OK- I’ll retract thw “outright suck” comment- that was admittedly overstated- and since I also admittedly can’t pick anyone that is inspiring to star as John Carter other than hoping for an awesomely cast unknown …or Michael Bay…I’ll leave that one alone.

Kudos again on pulling the quote right out of the book- especially when it was not a smoking gun for you- I admire the effort and commitment to accuracy in debate…nice touch. It’s also nice to not talk politics with you for once…

    So cheers Doc.

    The Selling of AICN

    by headgeek

I've been offered $20 million for this site 3 times now, and $32 million once. All 4 times I've turned it down. I am not a rich man. I live in a rented house.... my recent operation was 100% paid for by my wife's work's insurance company. I only had to pay a couple of $20 deductibles.

That said - I can say - absolutely that I will never ever sell AICN. I created it. And I can't begin to tell you how amazing it is to create something that I can see so many people every day of their lives... enjoy, abuse and be free to write what they wish.

I'm sure having millions in cash would be a great thing, but frankly - I love waking up each day knowing that I'm my own person - and that my co-editors and writers on the site can write with zero fear of being fired. AICN entertains purchase offers - so we can laugh at them. Fact is - I have the life I've always wanted... And its a life worth struggling a bit with.

    by bender7

When you put money ahead of something you believe in, it's a lack of integrity. People generally feel one of the main problems of Hollywood is the lack of integrity and creativity that is why there are less quality movies. Making movies PG to appeal to teenage consumerism. Spending millions of dollars on special effects and stars salaries and chucking together a clunky script. Directors and writers agreeing to do another movie in a seriers that adds nothing of value but will bring in money. All these add up to putting money ahead of making something special. Money will always be important, but if people always put money ahead of their own values then what's left of society is screwed. I for one appreciate that Harry has turned down offers, because he know that it will destroy his site.

My pleasure. Although I must say, my definition of a hardbody is not a woman with a nice, sizable chest (unless it's a San Fernando Valley porn skank with fakies). Slender is fine, as long as there are some hips and boobs in the equation. Someone with a bod like Diora Baird (the PERFECT Barbarella) would be awesome. I like Aria Giovanni, but she looks too soft, like she couldn't handle anything heavier than a pencil, much less a rapier (and probably can't act worth shit). Salma hayek, anno 1996's From Dusk til Dawn, is what Thoris should look like.

As for Frazetta, I agree -- although I enjoy his Tharks, Martian outfits and Barsoomian women, I really don't like his John Carter. Conan IS where he shines the most.

It's not just selling a site - then going to create a new one. When you're dealing with that sort of money - you must sign an exclusive 10-15 year contract. Call me ignorant but..WHY is this so hard to make

    by cotton mcknight

I just looked up John Carter of Mars on Wikipedia and I don't get why this is so hard to make an adaptation of. I mean its a story right? It has a beginning, middle, and end, right? Just like every other piece of english writing? The only thing I have ever known of this was through this site, and all I have read is how difficult this thing is to make. The first appearance of Carter was apparently in a comic/book/whatever called Princess of Mars. How about just making a movie about that? If there are origin stories about him, put that at the beginning and segue that into the Princess of Mars movie. What is the big freakin deal?

    by series7

One...two... Yeah i pretty much don't care if this site never changes. I hate all new web sites now. WAY too much flash player and blah blah. Also now that I've found a way to dig through the archives searching for old articles got a little better.

If Harry is offered millions, I would do it. You only live once. Isn't he living in a trailer in South Austin? He has a wife, and will have a kid someday i'm sure. He's worked hard, done all the right things, and I say go for it. Yes I think he has a responsibility to keep integrity on the site, but family trumps all that.

    by evil chicken

I hope Pixar makes this happen. Pixar could do it but it’s got to be big, bold, bloody and half naked – sort of “Heavy Metal” with a cohesive story. Pixar has the storytelling chops and a certain Princess of Mars deserves to be treated with respect. I, for one, can’t wait.

It isn't as simple as integrity.

    by jimmay

As Harry clarified, if he sold, he'd have to sign a contract with soulless big media megalomaniacs who would demand he write on their favored subjects. For example, if whichever entity that won the bid had a vested interest in a Brett Rattner film, Harry would have to suck up not just his personal integrity, but everything that has gone into his understanding and love of film, and lie-which often takes a hell of a lot more talent than being honest, sadly-to everyone's face and say he's changed his mind about the Director. It's not just that Harry wouldn't do it, he, like any one of us that believes in anything, couldn't do it. It'd simply be too damn hard.

    Xiphos- Good news!

    by 900lbgorilla

You don’t have to come here, unless you live in the town where the Hills Have Eyes took place, it’s a pretty safe bet that you can go to your own local mall to find a better looking woman than Selma!

…newsflash, her being in some movies doesn’t make her better looking than women who have nicer features than she does…and there are plenty o those….oh-and if you do live in The Hills town…I recommend that you move STAT!

    Jack Colby- nice try

    by 900lbgorilla

An “Exact” translation of almost any book would make a less than stellar movie because of the difference in medium… (For instance some key information in the Mars series...and many other books are told to us as almost asides or a steh main characters thoughts and thus outside the main narrative…which translateds poorly to film as it makes either scenes outside the narrative necessary or the use of another mechanism to relay the information)

…but to the main tpoint-the 1st 3 books were not “all over the place” and a competenmtly shot faithful adaptation would do FAR better among all but small children than a Pixar kiddification of a relatively adult book….Or perhaps you would like Pixar to do any future Conan films and believe they would have been better suited to invent the Alien franchise? If not your point is moot…some stories are perfect for Pixar- some are not…and John Carter is certainly NOT…Sorry Jack.

    by morgoth

...isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder anyway? That's like the ridiculous argument that Cate Blanchett isn't the most beautiful woman in the world (Whu? There's only one?!!) and therefore should not have been cast as Galadriel. Selma already has the skin tone and the curves..plus she ain't exactly hard on the peepers iffen you take my meaning. I find her quite beautiful.Right you are then ebonic!

Diora Baird? She doesn’t have a “slender girlish” figure….She is half boobs man! I mean Damn! Well OK you’re a boob guy- I don’t think that’s your Dejah, but I’ll go with you on the Barbarella comment…

And I have given Selma tons o crap over the last 4 posts in relation to Dejah –especially because facially she is not really exceptional at all and her carriage is all off for Dejah –she’s more feisty/bitchy than regal…but that said, I should clarify a bit-because her body in Dusk To Dawn was INSANE- and that was one of the most sensual scenes I have ever watched- heck its still the only real reason I keep the channel on when Dusk kicks in on a pay channel- I even got a friend who hated the movie and would never watch it through to stick around due to Selma- he had never watched that scene (he had seen much of before and after in parts & HATED the lame vampires) but I made him wait it out without telling him why…he went from sitting there annoyed in a chair to somehow sitting like a dog in front of the TV by halway through the scene and didn’t move for the rest of the movie…fricken pricelessly funny to see in person. Especially because for part if it he looked like s a slack jawed dunce…he probably drooled on himself at some point.

You sometimes annoy the hell out of me with your politics, but turning down a lottery ticket in order to live the way you want to is a tough decision…always gotta respect someone who puts his money where his mouth is (especially to that extent) to be their own man….I hope it works out for you in the long run.

Obviously with the majority siding on the side of Harry and his integrity. Sometimes money doesn't cover the cost of everything, namely self-respect and principles. Glad to see in this Age of Disloyalty that some people aren't willing to sacrifice their beliefs and ideals to Sell Out. That's why i've come to AICN since the beginning and will as long as the site it up. Mad props Harry. Respect knuckles ;)

I've never read "John Carter" but have seen some of its classic artwork. It looks pretty tripped out, so I'd love to see Pixar do a film, live action or animated.
Animation might be a better (and cheaper) choice, though, to blow people's socks off with crazy Pixar renderings. I'm sure it'll be compelling either way.
