Learn What Judd Apatow’s Third Directorial Effort Is About!!
I am – Hercules!!
Judd Apatow’s third movie as director following “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up” will be set in the world of stand-up comedy, the filmmaker tells mtv.com.
The untitled feature shooting this September, which stars Apatow’s old roommate Adam Sandler as well as regular Apatow players Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann, centers on a pair of comics – and is described as the director’s most grown-up effort to date.
From mtv.com:
"It's a comedy, but it has more drama in it. A hilarious drama is what I'm going for," Apatow said. "Every movie, I'm trying to find a way to go deeper, to tell stories about subjects that are important and make them less and less broad while making them equally as funny. [This film is] another step in that progression.

More Apatow is always a good thing.
-
i love Apatow but CANNOT STAND Sandler. damn....conflicted! well, see how it goes, i'll give it the benefit of the doubt but shit... I havent seen anything with Sandler in it that didnt suck.
-
Aren't the good kind lately.
-
40 yr old virgin is one of the most laugh out loud flicks i've ever seen
-
One of the funniest movies ever made. Knocked Up was good, but the drama felt forced and detracted from the funny. I was kinda hoping his next flick would focus more on the comedy and less on the drama, but oh well. I'm sure whatever Apatow does will be better than 99.9% of the comedies that come out that year.
-
we live in an Apatow world, and we should be grateful.
-
but as someone already said, I'll give Judd the benefit of the doubt.
-
Is it just me or does each movie with his name on it get a little worse?
-
you WILL eat those words when pineapple express is unleashed upon thee.
-
... than his usual man-child schtick.Don't get me wrong, when his usual man-child schtick is done right (Happy Gilmore), it is classically hilarious. But when it's done wrong (Big Daddy), it is stale and boring. But when he's tried to stretch his legs a bit and do more serious roles, like in Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me, he's actually been very, very good.I can't wait to see what Apatow can do for him. I'm betting he'll get Sandler to be as good as Carrell in Virgin.
-
And eventually he will make his CURLY SUE.
-
Damn You Michael Bay
-
Telling me that this is the new comic event of the decade???? I need another Apatow movie like Bill Murray's wife needs another punch in the face. On a side note, there was this centipede crawling around in the house, and yeah that thing secreted some nasty foul smelling shit when I picked it up to throw away and now I cannot get off of my fingers!!! Smells worse then Gotham_night's pussy.
-
... isn't Kevin Smith still this Generation's Kevin Smith? When did we get a new Generation?Where am I?Or... when am I?
-
And have a pleasant tomorrow. God now I am going to have dreams of how one day Apatow will be deemed the Mayor of Comedy and the only comedy we will see is nerds talking about smoking weed or boning girls or talking about movies/TV/Comics/Music/flavors of Pringles they like.... which pretty much is my day to day conversations.
-
The choke talk back is that way.
-
CGI gophers = face on HK = flames on Optimus
-
So that means Kevin Smith = generation x and Judd Apatow = generation y?
-
I give myself a count. You need a count... f'balance. I like to think of my bladder as a nuclear reactor that's about to go critical. I need to relieve the pressure or the bitch is gonna blow. So I count down from ten. By the time I reach one, I'm pissing like a champ.
-
Apatow's stuff. On the one hand it can be pretty funny but then I always get the feeling like I'm getting beaten over the head with some flakey moral message.
Even Superbad had to have a 'getting drunk is bad' message slapped on at the end.
I'm not convinced yet. Next it will be 'pussy gives you aids'. -
That was one of my favorite episodes.
-
They could be this generations Lucas & Spielberg. Or more like Ramis & Landis.
-
Didn't Apatow produce that one? Pineapple Express looks to be the funniest of all, however.
-
You know... since he has stated that as his overriding goal, for every one of his films.
Apatow likes the tube steak. sssssssssssssssssssslurp-slurp. -
Here's what will happen: It will take a good premise, some nice characterisation and then drag it out for half an hour too long. Good god, knocked up and virgin could have been so much better if apatow had some discipline in the edit.
And superbad is the best film his name's been attached to. -
You'd think she's married to Apatow or something with all this work he gives her.
-
I didn't know that. This sounds pretty good, and the fact that the two of them have a history together means they should have instant chemistry working together.
-
It's 40 minutes too long and it drags on and on with people bitching at each other. I couldn't wait for it to be over. Superbad has a great beginning and ending but the middle stretch is deadly, particularly the period-blood party and most of the stuff with the cops.
-
'Cause that damn Zohan movie looks preeeetty shitty.
-
...but Apatow is great, so I'm torn.
-
Awesome! Not like he hasn't completely overdone that bit yet!!!

Looks like 2 sound stages have burned down as of 7 am today.
-
one sound stage gone. I hope they save the film vault!
-
...And frankly I'm tired of both of them. Unless you're a certain short excitable Italian dude, a certain two Jewish brothers from Minnesota, or P.T. Anderson, I'm not going to go nuts about your movie sight unseen.
-
oh well, it'll still be good
-
Seth Rogen has yet to give me a decent laugh. Do I blame him, or the man who keeps shoving him in my face?
-
Dude doesn't want his name to become synonymous with teens and young adults... hope he can pull it off. Get him some Judy Greer in this one quick, Leslie Mann is probably a great wife but her acting skills are limited at best.
-
That's like piss versus shit. I love how people bash Kevin Smith while simultaneously praising Judd Apatow. They're on the same level. Both have had their hands on one or two entertaining movies/TV shows, but nothing great. The vast majority of the movies they've been attached to are crud. Apatow does owe much to Kevin Smith, since his movies are just a splicing of Smith and the Farrelly brothers.
-
Sorry if I just ruined the movie for all of you.
-
Apatow has been declining, but Pineapple Express will come around and it will be INSANE. I'll bite on this one.
-
For his involvement in Larry Sanders, Freaks & Geeks, and Undeclared will have to put together a string of major fuck-ups before I lose interest in him.
-
...David Gordon Green, the auteur behind "George Washington," "All The Real Girls," "Undertow" and "Snow Angels." Apatow, once again, is a producer.
-
She has a hard time with range and emotion. However, she's 100X better than Kevin Smith's wife.
-
What "sources" are you speaking of? Every early review featured on this site, CHUD and elsewhere have been raves and it scored through the roof with test audiences. You might want to check your sources again, or get some new ones.
And Fireproof, that flabbyass attracted Linda Cardellini in real life, so... -
It owns Knocked Up and Superbad. Its U.S. boxoffice as of this weekend: $60.5 million. Better per-screen $ average than Speed Racer, in its 7th week of release. Well done Judd, Nick Stoller, Jason, Kristen, Russell, Mila, etc. May it be showered with Golden Globe comedy/musical nominations in December.
-
...who really doesn't care for Apatow's movies? I mean, yeah, different strokes for different folks, but I'm just surprised how popular this guy is and I just don't find him funny.
I saw the 40 Year Old Virgin and I really didn't like it. I chuckled when the one white friend didn't realize he was a stalker and when Steve Carell spoke like a black man, and that was it. The rest of the movie just didn't cut the mustard for me.
I realize the risk I take in saying "I don't like 40 Year Old Virgin" in that everyone will automatically assume that I'm a virgin in turn, but since you're all just hypertext in an online forum, I don't care.
In contrast, movies that I DO like are Thank You For Smoking and Little Miss Sunshine. The former made me laugh because I think it's funny when a man can be such an audacious prick and still try to raise a kid, and the latter because it was like a massive improvement on those old Chevy Chase National Lampooon's movies.
So, go ahead and insult me. After all, I'm just sharing my opinions... -
A pathetic, overweight, loutish, broke, disgusting pig loser with no redeemable qualities with manage to attract the attention of an insanely hot and successful woman who will do anything for the loser. the morale is a woman is a terrible person if she doesnt like a guy solely because he is funny and a man is fine being a total loser only attracted to looks. the end. thanks Apatow, you've turned me into a feminist.
-
just got back from the future and it wasn't as good as dying of laughter. but what do you expect, apatows good, his movies are just too jumbled.
-
set during the 80s in either san francisco or boston....the hubs of comedy of the time...and dont let anyone who has never done standup play a standup, ala hanks in punchline...that movie was awful
-
Looking forward to this. Even though I think alot of people including myself are over Adam Sandler.
I would love Judd to make a movie about the eighties comedy scene.
Dice, Sam Kinison etc. -
hopefully he'll be moving away from the "vulgar-but-with-lots-of-heart" shit he's been doing. not that it wasn't good, but he needs to do something new before that shit gets old.
-
Hasn't this hack made like 100 movies already??
-
I don't get it. Am I the only one on this board who doesn't hate Sandler? Yeah, his last, oh, I don't know, ten movies or so have been flops, but he has had some great moments. It's just that his career arc has followed Robin Williams or Jim Carrey. Why is it that great comedians seem to think that they haven't really "arrived" until they are taken seriously as dramatic actors? I don't know if "Zohan" is the right move (it looks pretty sketchy), but at least it shows an interest in getting back to what he does best. As for him and Seth Rogan together in an Apatow movie, it has potential.
-
and i came to the conclusion that i love Punch Drunk Love and i love adam sandler in it. Agreed that he chooses bad projects, but he can act when he want. I know loads hate the film ive mentioned though so now im scared....cue abuse (ill let you know im really skinny and i eat galaxy chocolate to make it easier for you)
-
My point was (and it still stands) that he had some great movies in his heyday, and people seem to have forgotten about them. Also, I have not seen nearly the level of hate on this site for Robin Williams or Jim Carrey (who have had similar recent track records). And yeah, Wnanahara, 50 First Dates was pretty good (so was Spanglish). So, my question remains - why Sandler?
-
goddamn shame
-
And you couldn't do the same for Robin Williams? Here, let me try: lovable weirdo spends half of a movie doing his standup routine and the other half teaching people about how to be true to themselves. And that doesn't just apply to comedians, either. Jack Nicholson has been playing essentially the same character in practically every movie he's been in. So, for all of his method acting, has DeNiro, for the most part (until he decided he wanted to be a comic actor...ugh). And the list could go on for a whole talkback page, but you get my point. Again, why Sandler?
-
Yeah, but like my previous comment, most of even the best actors have a pretty dismal overall track record. Hell, even Gary Oldman did Lost In Space (I know that's apples and oranges, but again, you get my point). I just don't get why people single out Sandler; that's all.
-
funny slackers doing drugs and implausably banging hot goy blond chicks?? Maybe a couple of proud to be Jewish and Sci Fi genre references. Pondscum I think we could take a shot it this script.
-
Del Toro and now Apatow. This site will do everything in their power to promote it.
-
It doesn't matter how bad the film. I promise you people one thing in this world: you'll never see a bad review from one of the regulars on this site when it comes to Tanintino, Rodriguez, dude from lord of rings,Del Toro and now Apatow.
-
are both overrated.
-
But you forgot about the hilarity that ensues one one of the comics slacker emo friends (wearing a retro Space 1999 ringer T) finds himself smoking pot with their manager's hot trophey wife and the manager comes home and chases the nerdy naked (save the retro space 1999 ringer T because he was embarrased of his tubby body- more hilarity perhaps the Jonah Hill role)kid out of the plush Hollywood Hills home and thru a neighborhood of uptight rich types agast as the manager (Jeremy Piven??) drops F bombs and Cunt bombs at the kid as he chases him his neighbors lawns and hedges with his new Callaway Big Bertha Driver which was a gift from Rogan or Sandler.
-
40 year old virgin, knocked up. how can it be more grown up than those?
-
Because Knocked Up was 100 cliches piled ontop of a few weed jokes along with a very unlikable sister character, and bullshit like the ladies sitting in bed, eating ice cream which you see in every single bullshit romantic comedy ever. Superbad and Marshall were actually original and much funnier and nowhere near as many drags in the funny.
-
Is that he's on a hot streak.
Like Arnold in the late eighties or Jim Carrey in the early nineties. You get so excited about their releases and they deliver when you see them.
Judd is funnier than Kevin.
And I love Kevin.
-
is that supposed to be funny?
-
Her character was so obsessed with it in Knocked Up. Yeah she doesn't have great range, haven't seen her in anything really dramatic but cmon, I'd fuck the shit out of her, literally. She looks like a freak.
-
Because offbeat is funnee!
-
But I've seen it a dozen times now and the funny has worn off. Police Academy though, is still fresh every time I watch it.
-
among morons.
-
but not as good.
-
For those who didn't know yet. DAMN YOU, George Lucas! Damn you to hell!
-
He keeps using the same people.
-
Was suppose to be funny????? That movie played out like any lame Rom-com, but told by that irritating 30 something guy at work who thinks he is still cool and that he has some knowledge to pass.
-
You haven't even seen Speed Racer yet. So get that weak shit off my track.
-
hahahahaha. Looks like I just laughed out loud!
-
That Sandler has never hosted SNL?
-
GOLD, JERRY!!!!
-
Seriously. As a gen x movie fan, I'd gladly make a deal.
As far as Apatow's movies go, I wasn't that big a fan of Knocked Up or The 40-year-old virgin. I loved Superbad immensely and thought Walk Hard was severely underrated. I think it just depends on what kind of sense of humor you have. With Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I thought it was a 'hilarious drama'. The main story was about a dude getting dumped on his ass. The funny stuff happened around him. So I could see people hating FSM because they were sold a laugh a minute comedy. It wasn't. So calling this next one a drama from the start seems like a good idea to me. -
...he's like ordinary comedy but with Joss Whedon writing his scripts (ok...maybe not Whedon good but someone that at least makes his characters sound like how 'normal' people might talk). It'slow-brow humor with good dialogue. And is it just me or does Rogen laugh like he's gargling moletn lava? That guy's laugh makes me want to pour drano in my ear canals.

Apatow seems to have major muscle as Bana has never done comedy outside of Australia. Maybe he enjoyed the "Eric Bana kicks ass" bit from Knocked Up.
