Ewan McGregor co-pilots the Amelia Earhart biopic!

Published at:  May 27, 2008 2:48:31 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Mira Nair (VANITY FAIR) is helming an Amelia Earhart biopic with Hilary Swank in the lead, Richard Gere as her husband (famous publisher George Putnam) and Virginia Madsen in a co-starring role.

Ewan McGregor has been hired to come in for what sounds like a minor character in the flick as he's squeezing the shooting of his part in-between wrapping I LOVE YOU, PHILIP MORRIS and ANGELS AND DEMONS. He'll play Earhart's lover, Gene Vidal (papa of Gore Vidal).

It's good to see McGregor working so much. He's been one of my favorites of his generation since I saw TRAINSPOTTING. Thoughts?

    by flickchick85

Let Hilary play Amelia Earhart in that Night of the Museum sequel instead of Amy Adams. I'd be much more interested in this if Adams were the lead, but I guess that's just because Swank annoys the hell outta me.

    McGregor

    by kwisatzhaderach

is the most overrated actor going. He was terrific in Trainspotting but he hasn't had a good role since. His American accent in particular is dreadful (Black Hawk Down) and he is pretty bland. He takes any crap for a paycheque (despite saying the opposite in interviews). The only time he's acted well since Trainspotting (with the possible exception of Moulin Rouge) is in Young Adam, which is a cracking little film. He needs to more films like this, and not the crap he's been churning out the past few years. It's too bad he and Danny Botle fell out, McGregor would have been great in The Beach, 28 Days Later and Sunshine.

Let's face it, he was the only decent thing in the Star Wars prequils. Look at photos of Earheart, and I'd say Swank is a pretty good match.

SPOLIER ALERT... Amelia dies at the end...

    by tvspace

I may catch it on a rainy Sunday afternoon after it's moved to HBO or Showtime.

I agree with an earlier post. I never got Swank. Maybe she should think about a sequel to her '94 blockbuster "The Next Karate Kid," or see if she can kick start renewed interest in that '91 television classic "Harry and the Hendersons."

    Yawn...

As much as I respect people like Earhart, and Eleanor Roosevelt, they would tie in a fugly contest. I knew Hollywood would put a hottie in the lead instead of keeping it real.

    by freerangecelt

As we all know, Amelia got picked up by aliens and in the Voyager episode "The 37's", she's alive and well in the 24th century, living in the Delta Quadrant. So reports of her demise are greatly exaggerated.

I've never found this story very interesting and how many specials and movies and whatnot have been done about her? I like Ewan but he's put me through a fair share of watching shitty movies. Add that to my Richard Gere allergy, and this doesn't sound like something I'll be rushing off to see.

by i am the most horrible

At least swank is in the ballpark as far as looking like Amelia. Still not a ringer. I am tired of people casting this role with bipedal human females and thinking "eh, close enough." Earhart was atypically beautiful and had a unique, distinctive look. The chick from the movie Fandango (name escapes me) would've been great.
P.S. The Damn you Michael Bay thing is so beyond tired I wish it was dead. You're better than that.

Dude, every post you put up plugs that blog shamelessly. What, are you trying to drum up business over there? On top of which, what kind of logic are you even employing given your statement? First you declare "Ewan stunk as Obi Wan. Just my opinion, very bland"...but THEN you say "Not his fault though, the script sucked."Well, if you're willing to openly declare that it WASN'T 't his fault and you're even willing to cite an outside force (slight pun intended) as being what caused a bad performance (ie. Lucas' writing) then basically your logic is totally fucked up and you're taking a cheap shot for no good reason. Given your own statements, what you SHOULD be saying is "Ewan did about as good as could be expected, but frankly ANYONE playing the role would have stunk since they were saddled with such a piss-poor script."Not to mention which you're wrong anyway. Ewan as younger Obi-Wan was without question one of the only bright spots in the Prequels, and I'd even go so far to say he was the BEST thing about those 3 films...

    The Truth Is Out There

    by roboteer

There was an investigative report on her disappearence several years ago that detailed it as mistaken navigation on her part. It's not a mystery..... I hope the filmmakers go after Joni Mitchell's sad soaring tribute to Earhart and lost love, "AMELIA", maybe to play over the closing credits. If everything else about the film sucks, at least THAT will be memorable.

McGregor needs to go back to indie basics and find his credibili

    by scottishnutjob

I think McGregor is overrated - he would be dust in the wind if he'd never met Boyle. Without the springboard of Shallow Grave and Trainspotting he’d be lucky to get bit-parts in Taggart. Trainspotting was terrific thanks in the main to the memorable supporting cast and the timing of it. The ‘snowball effect’ is where actors get to be big because they were lucky enough to be in a couple of decent films and then they immediately start getting work beyond their capabilities and ahead of other more talented, less experienced actors. Sometimes they get found out and sometimes they hide behind good directors. The guy is not a star and studio bosses are barely beginning to realise this. He is an excellent character actor if you give him the right part (the darker the better) and a good director to get the performance out of him. Agree Young Adam was great, but it was a flash in the pan now. The Star Wars films were terrible for a lot of great actors involved. Down With Love is great in flashes but a huge mess that shouldn't have been. Zellweger was on career best form but McGregor is an embarrassing, mediocre mess – he left his game head at home. McGregor and Bremer were a shite joke in Black Hawk Down. If you’re going to call yourself a movie star the least you can do is nail accents – American accents are a doddle. Having said that, I don’t know anyone who could have played Christian in Moulin Rouge or would have got their willy out for Young Adam et al. The ‘damn kids syndrome’ is another phenomenon where previously credible indie actors stop getting their genitalia out and take the shilling to be in crappy family movies so that their kids can watch their work.
