The first stills from Dario Argento's GIALLO, starring Adrien Brody, hit the net!

Published at:  May 21, 2008 4:55:12 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love Dario Argento and I'm forgiving his many misfires. Despite the crap, I want to see every new movie he does just based on my love of his best '70s and '80s work. GIALLO looks like the film of his that stands the best chance of returning him to his glory.

The good folks at ShockTillYouDrop.com nabbed the first couple of stills. Click on the one below for the all the stills and the higher res ones!

Mother of Tears! Jesus Christ all fuckin mighty! I really do love him and his earlier works and will even defend "Sleepless" as a return to form. So, yes I was excited about MOT and seeing the end of a trilogy that Includes "Inferno" his masterpiece. But, what a load of old shit. I felt embarrassed watching it. It even ends with the surviving characters pissing themselves laughing like they've just played an joke on you with film you just sat through... I'll still see this though.

Argento has been paddling the shallows of his career for God knows how long now, and he even scored a duck with the final part of the Three Mothers trilogy, but with more attention focused on him because of the cast he has this time, he might get off of auto-pilot for the first time in nearly 20 years. Non Ho Sonno was pretty damn good, but it's a hell of a long time between decent movies.

    by seph_j

... regardless of the crap he's made. He is a great example of how someone can be SO SO SO SO GOOD, and then, for no apparant reason, mind-achingly bad. I ALMOST PRAY for a Suspiria 2... and I don't mean another 'three mothers entry'... I mean SUSPIRIA 2... as in, back at the dance academy... Susy Banyon, crazy colours, airport doors signalling music cues, blind pianists (hell get Brody for that part).... and some creepy ass snoring in the dance hall at night - with big shadows cast on the dividers. Suspiria is a masterpiece. And Suspiria 2 from Argento is about the only horror sequel to a classic I'd ever want.

Ice Cube, Natasha Henstridge and another reimagining of whatever he based Precinct 13 on. The only Carpenter effort (and I include memoirs of an invisible man- even though he was blatantly the wrong director for it, and Starman) that is completely hopeless is Escape from LA.

    Escape from LA...

I've had some weird arguments on horror over the years

    by lost jarv

The ones that really stand out are: when LaserPants thought that Hostel was some sort of sly social satire, whereas I maintain that is crediting that unmitigated dickhead Roth with far too much intelligence; and with Roland about Dawn the original being far superior to the remake.

"Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in." I really like the idea of a solid horror movie with Brody in it. You know, this is any good, he could really pass as Asia's older brother in another horror movie. That could be some pretty interesting chemistry.

Doubting it, since this is up Bordy's alley of weird side films. But I'm kinda wondering if one off shoot of the strike will be American actors working more foreign films. Are generation needs some Anthony Quinn types.

MOTHER OF TEARS received mixed reviews, some people liked it very much, some people disliked it,but IMO the film is really entertaining, gory fun.

Some of the acting and the CGI effects aren't too good but there are cool nasty murders and nice locations...the film is much better IMO that some of Argento's last disappointing works (SLEEPLESS,PHANTOM OF THE OPERA...)

Just don't expect the vivid lightning and dreamy worlds of SUSPIRIA and INFERNO and you'll enjoy it!

    Argento vs. Fulci

    by prossor

on this neverending debate i would have to choose.... NO ONE! seriously both have good and bad things about them. People say Argento is a lot better but theres some unoriginality in there, just how many times can he film people heads smashing through glass? Fulci's filmography has less good stuff than Argento's, but Fulci's good stuff is REALLY good. Zombi 2 in my opinion, i like even more than Dawn of the Dead which was an unofficial Italian sequel to it. Ooh also let's not forget Deodato with Cannibal Holocaust, tha was sick stuff, and let's not forget the other great horror guys Lenzi
    Jacopetti
    Prosperi
    Climati
    Morra
    Cavara
    Margheriti
    Mattei
    D'Amato

Cannibal Holocaust is one of those annoying that set too many precedents to be forgotten, but yeah, I kinda wish we could too. I mean there a are a lot of things that did work in the film quite well. I almost want to love it, but then it turns around and not only does something mind blowingly fucked up, but does it so unintelligibly for the sake of that you want to throw something at the screen. All that said, torture porn it is not. At least as I'd define it. Cannibal horror is it's own fucked up genre all to itself, and it's one I don't miss. There's not really any Torture per se in Cannibal. I looked it over while writing a grad paper on torture horror, and found nothing but a big mess o rape and some unpleasant mutilation. To call the dismembering torture porn would mean also throwing films like Dawn of the Dead in the mix. So no, it's not torture porn by the general understanding I'd say. As far as I can tell it did kick off the docuhorror genre, which is modern continuation of the epistolary writing style that was popular in Gothic literature (best example being Dracula).

Got to admit Brody looked sweet with the goatee - like a young Giancarlo Giannini. This one's gonna be good.

Don't forget you're talking about Dario. I for one would not like him to cast Asia's boobs without her. That would be messy. And the last time a movie promised a bucket of bloody tits on this site... memory's a bit foggy, but I recall that movie sucked. Not bloody tits, mind you, just plain old sucked. So if sucking the bloody tits is your thing (to each there own bro) than it's still probably gonna be a lose-lose situation. But yeah, I always enjoy Asia in a horror movie.

I entirely agree with everything in that post. I don't for a second think it is Torture Porn- when I said the father of (arguably), I meant that without the nastiness then the film would have no reason to exist- and this is the standard that I hold TP to- Would it work without the sadism? if the answer is no, then you have TP.

    regarding Dawn-

    by lost jarv

My point being, if you took the dismemberments out of Dawn would it still work? I think so, so therefore is not TP. The mutilation/ chomping should be incidental to the horror, it should not be the driving force of the story. There is a whole bucketload of Cannibal movies of which I'm pleased to say I've only seen a few- and I reckon Holocaust is probably the nastiest, but bizarrley, also the best. I still wouldn't recommend anyone watching it though- the Animal deaths are too much.

    Except

    by neosamurai85

Besides some over the top acting. I think the film would still work without the excessive rape and toning down the animal violence. The hard part would be losing the Turtle death because it legitimized their gore pallet. When the people die their guts look like the turtle's so the viewer things, "I know THAT was real, so is this real also?" Goes without saying I'm against the animal death, but that's where you might have me on this.

    by lost jarv

If you substitute a fake turtle for a real turtle and removed all the gore from that film you're left with a clever mocumentary that completely fails as a horror film. The gore is essential to ellicit the reaction of disgust and fear from the audience Great chat, man, hope to see you in another TB
