Big Willie remaking French blockbuster WELCOME TO THE STICKS!

Published at:  May 20, 2008 2:45:34 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Looks like Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment and Warner Bros are giving French flick WELCOME TO THE STICKS the American remake treatment. The original flick has broken box office records in France, earning nearly $200 million. It follows a postal employee who is transferred from an ideal neighborhood to a rainy area referred to as The Sticks. He grows to love the community, of course. I'm sure Will Smith is eyeballin' the lead.

I'm not familiar with the original, but it sounds ripe for Americanization. I'll have to seek out the original. Thoughts?

That works in France but becomes Really Too Sugary sweet specially when Big Willy is mugging it for the locals! Stick to action Moovies and stop trying to be Jimmy Stewart!

    Hey Quint!

...it actually is "Welcome to the Chti's". Saw the movie, since I live in Belgium. It's a fun movie, but I don't know how they're going to adapt it to the US. I mean, it's about a guy leaving in southern France and being transferred to the north. It plays with all the stereotypes people from south have about people from north (they think they're all drunks, it always rains, it's almost a polar weather, etc.). But it's all actually wrong, since they're not drunk, weather is not that terrible, people are waremr than the people of the south, yadda-yadda-yadda... I can't see how this will be adapted to the US (unless it happens it a redneck community). The movie per se is not a great movie, it just has a lot of heart since the director came from north of France and he wanted to do a love declaration his countryside. I guess taht, by re-making, we will lose what made it succesfull in the first place: its heart.

The original is just the flavor of the month

    by spencertrilby

Been shown in ColCoa and it worked well with US audience, which was quite surprising given the inherently "Old France" nature of the movie. That's a decent feel good flick, but nothing more than an improved TV movie, even by French standards. No need for a heartless remake.

I like Will Smith. Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness convinced me that this guy is a serious actor. I'm sure he'll make this work. When is he and his kid making that Karate Kid remake?

  • I don't know if you have seen it, but that's the first time I knew Will had enormous potentual and I usually disregard rappers turned thespians (Sam Jackson shares the same sentiment.) but Smith,Latifah and Mos Def have proven otherwise.<p.I think Smith should be more careful when choosing projects, cause ID4,WWW and especially Hitch took a big shit on his cred. And unfortunatley, Hitchcock shows no sign of progression.

americans ignorant & arrogant enough to remake films

    by pipergates

In other countries they show the damn films with subtitles and actually enjoy the cultural diversity. The fall of New Rome is near.

If it brings a good story to people who wouldn't see it otherwise, isn't that a good thing?

When traveling on international flights flick through the movie selection and witness the films of the world. It's a wonderful experience having films from all over at your fingertips.

It would be wonderful if it was like that in the theaters here in the States. Instead of rehashed americanized junk. Granted not all foreign films are good or anything, but at least we'll get a wider variety of films in the theaters. MAn that would be an ideal world.

it just shows a lack of culture

    by pipergates

Why shouldn't they be able to see that good story with subtitles, or dubbed if need be?

    It'll Probably Star Will Farrell

    by iammrmonkey!

Who transfers from an afluent white area into a predominantly black area of the city. All the original charm will be lost as we have scene after scene of Farrell learning that black people are actually okay and it'll end with Farrell dressing up as Snoop Dogg whilst rapping about how he loves his new neighbourhood. You know I'm right here.

Stalkeye you forgot to mention Andre (3000) Benjamin

    by only1

seriously... he's really doing some good stuff on film. Easily of the best parts of Be Cool. As for this flick??? Sounds like Hot Fuzz but postal workers instead of cops, without the crime and without the comedy

    Andre 3000 Cannot Act, Period

What the hell is Hollywoods infatuation with rappers anyway? Will Smith is a very rare exception to the rule.

    I can't really comment on Andre's acting only1

    by stalkeye

As I couldn't get through the first 10 minutes of Idlewilde.
But maybe he can act unlike 50 Cent or "Diddy".And to be honest, Justin Timberlake is a shitty actor if anyone has seen black snake moan, you'll know what i'm talking about. The only saving grace in Alpha dog IMO was that actor Ben foster's performance (he's the guy from the punisher,X3 and 3:10 to yuma movies.) and not the venerable pop star. And now black eyed peas singer Will I am is starring in the wolverine movie.Maybe he'll fare better as an actor than a singer/rapper, no?

You're right about Ben Foster in Alpha Dog. That guy is fuckin intense. I saw him in an episode of My Name Is Earl the other day. He's pretty funny.

I liked it better the first time...

    by the phantom blot

...when it was called "Doc Hollywood".

"Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" wasn't bad, it's just a completely formulaic comedy that we've all seen at least a dozen times. The only reason it made so much money in France is because it was released in the January/February dead zone when absolutely nothing else was playing.
