24!! SQUARE PEGS!! BULLSHIT!! GOSSIP GIRL!! CHUCK!! HD LONESOME DOVE!! CHEERS!! HercVault!!

Published at:  May 20, 2008 2:09:59 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

The following takes place between Midnight and 1 AM on the day of the California presidential primary ...

I am – Hercules!!

We’ve seen a lot of great “24” since 2001, but I don’t think the series ever topped its first 13 Naked Mandy-infused episodes. And unlike seasons two, three, four, five and six, the first season of “24” received only a bare-bones DVD release.

Which was why I greeted with surprise and gratitude Fox’s February announcement that 24 Season One: Special Edition would be out today. It is packed with the extras.

It’s got the alternate season ending.

Look! Press release!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS ALL OVER AGAIN
FOR THE TOP-RATED TELEVISION PHENOMENON

Seven-Disc DVD Set Featuring Special Collectible Packaging Clocks In May 20th With Over Three Hours Of Never-Before-Seen Bonus Features Including All-New Making Of Documentary, Extended Episodes, Deleted Scenes, Alternate Season Finale Ending, Commentaries & More

CENTURY CITY, Calif. - Relive the entire first nail-biting season of one of the most electrifying and innovative television programs in recent history when “24” Season One returns with an all-new Special Edition DVD May 20th from Fox Home Entertainment. Winner of 17 Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes during the show's six season run to date, the brand-new seven-disc “24” Season One Special Edition DVD set includes all 24 one-hour episodes and is packed with over three hours of never-before-seen special features including a Season Seven trailer, over 25 deleted and extended scenes, two all-new behind-the-scenes featurettes and more. Additionally the set will be available in collectible metal tin packaging that features special introductory letters from both series co-creators on their inspiration and challenges working on this groundbreaking show. The “24” Season One Special Edition DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $59.98 U.S. / $89.98 Canada.

Premiering on television in November 2001, “24” set a new standard for prime time intensity, making use of its unique real-time element following characters throughout an entire day, and introduced audiences to Counter Terrorism Unit agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), a man who will stop at nothing protect his colleagues, his family and his country.

Season One of this precedent-setting television series began as Agent Bauer is informed of a threat against U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert; “The Unit”) on the day of the California Primary. As Bauer attempts to unravel the mystery and ensure the safety of Senator Palmer, new conspiracies begin to emerge that threaten CTU, the country and his family. With incredible supporting performances from Elisha Cuthbert (The Girl Next Door, Captivity), Carlos Bernard (“10.5: Apocalypse”), Leslie Hope (Dragonfly), Sarah Clarke (Happy Endings), Eric Balfour (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Mia Kirshner (“The L Word”) as well as cameos from Lou Diamond Phillips (“Numb3rs,” Young Guns) and Dennis Hopper (Speed, Hoosiers), this will truly be a day that none of them will ever forget!

Fox Home Entertainment will support the “24” Season One Special Edition DVD release with a comprehensive marketing program aimed at re-promoting the entire franchise with on-air and online spots. Additionally, Fox Home Entertainment will work with national promotional partner Langers Juice, offering a sweepstakes for set visits and $5 mail-in rebates on one million labels distributed nationally in grocers across the country.

Synopsis:
The clock is ticking...Midnight. Jack Bauer, head of the CIA's Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit, is suddenly thrust into a chaotic and exhausting 24-hour marathon of death, deception and terror as he struggles to prevent the assassination of a presidential candidate, find the traitor within his own organization, and save his kidnapped wife and daughter.

Square Pegs is the series National Lampoon writer Anne Beatts came up with in 1982 not long after leaving “Saturday Night Live.” Like “Freaks and Geeks,” it was an high school comedy, set in the early 1980s, that focused on outsiders. There wasn’t much like it on TV (let alone CBS) in 1982, and I never missed an episode.

A lot of the cast went on to other cool things. Merritt Buttrick, who played Johnny Slash, was Kirk’s long-lost son David in “The Wrath of Khan.” Tracy Nelson (just one of Ricky’s famous kids), who played Jennifer DeNuccio, was Jerry’s female double in “Seinfeld.” Jamie Gertz, who played Muffy Tepperman, was Star in “The Lost Boys” and Blair in “Less Than Zero.” Sarah Jessica Parker, who played Patty Greene, was Rusty in “Footloose” and SanDeE* in “L.A. Story” and Dolores Fuller in “Ed Wood.”

Showtime’s debunkarama “Penn & Teller: Bullshit!” is as hilarious as it is interesting. Season five tackled more than 10 topics in its 10 episodes:

5.1 Obesity
5.2 Wal-Mart
5.3 Breast Hysteria
5.4 Detoxing
5.5 Exorcism
4.6 Immigration
5.7 Handicap Parking
5.8 Mount Rushmore
5.9 Nukes, Hybrids and Lesbians
5.10 Anger Management

Tonagan, Square Pegs has the original music, and more...

    by pennsy

They've got Devo, and the Waitresses. Also, spread out over the three disc-set is the feature "Weemawee Yearbook Memories", which seems to be pretty recent. Here's a breakdown of the interviews:

Disc 1: Sarah Jessica Parker (19 minutes), Tracy Nelson and Claudette Wells together (about 14 mins), Jami Gertz (10 mins)

Disc 2: John Femia (Marshall Blechtman; 9 mins); Steven Peterman (Rob) 10 mins); Amy Linker (14 minutes) and for Merritt Butrick, who died in 1989, all of the interviewees reminisce about his impact on the show and them (9 mins).

Disc 3: Showrunner Anne Beatts (16 minutes) So there's about an hour + of interviews. No puff piece, this. Sony went the extra mile here. Also, the episodes are widescreen on my TV set, not full-screen as it says on the box.

S2 was definitely the most consistent overall

by guy who got a headache and accidentally

But S1 had a "realism" quality that hasn't been touched since, seems like a whole different show almost. S2 was when it first became an "action show" but before it became mind numbingly retarded and formulaic. It also had a good consistant logical story from begining to end, the only one except for maybe s5, though not quite as good. s3, at least they tried something different there, with the mexico undercover shit. S5 was basically just a remake of s2, s6, a remake of s4, the worst seasons of them all.

    by anakin whoopass

Palmer = Obama? Sure, why not. As for the jet "deleted" scene, maybe they never completed the special effects once they decided not to show the explosion, or it's pointless to show a deleted TV-quality digital effect from 2001 that maybe doesn't look that impressive anyway.

Flickchick, if you somewhat enjoyed season one I'd say it's worth giving at least the start of season two a shot. Netflix disc one and that should be enough to let you know if you're into it or not. But overall, if you like the show at all season two is great.
