Learn The All-Star Cast Of DC Universe Supervillains With Which Oliver Queen Must Contend In SUPERMAX!!

Published at:  May 20, 2008 12:54:18 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Green Arrow is framed for murder and tossed in Amanda Waller’s metahuman prison with all the superpowered enemies of Superman, Batman, The Flash, The Green Lantern and even Swamp Thing.

That’s the starting point for the script of “Supermax,” the big-screen superhero saga written by Justin Marks and produced by David Goyer (the “Blade” trilogy, “Batman Begins”).

El Mayimbe over at Latino Review has read that script, and offers many details here.

should please wait until the Nolan/Bale trilogy is completed. Those two are currently making a series so dramatically satisfying, emotionally gripping and philosophically dense, that it would be a shame to not let them finish it unmolested. Then we can engage in this tomfoolery, which I admit does sound fun...

the hardcore comics/GA fans in. Maybe some of them, but not as many as the producers probably think. And Goyer sucks, huh? Which of you have sold a screenplay this month? This year? This decade? It's not like he's that hack Akiva Goldsmith.
Goyer's Blade was solid and Batman Begins did a good job drawing from various areas of source material (though Ducard as Ras or visa versa...eh....guess they thought an immortal with Lazarous pit would be too much. yeah, probably for the mass audience). I'd rather see a Green Arrow film of some kind., but even i"m not sure it that would work. On a side note, last year, with my wife and little boy, we saw Justin Hartley from Smallville with his wife and little girl, all of us coming from Enchanted. My son said 'you're Green Arrow' and he said, 'yes I am and talked to me a bit." That impressed me even if his young GA isn't the late 30s to early 40s Ollie I want to see.

That he's not a strong enough character for a standard superhero franchise. I mean, he's just a guy who shoots arrows. Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark have cool costumes and toys to play with. by 8foottallgopher

It's perfect that they use someone like Green Arrow for this. Apologies to Green Arrow fans aside, but he's a throwaway character. You can fuck with him all you want and nobody will cry 'bloody murder'

The cool thing is it will appeal to a broad audience because it's not a Green Arrow movie, it could be any super-hero. Heck they could just make up a superhero and pull this off.

It's a fun concept story that takes place in a superhero filled world where they can totally fuck with the hero and but hom through some situations you could never get away with with a Batman or Spider-Man.

And if you think this kind of idea has never been tried or worked before why don't you go look up a book called "Watchmen".

a good Green Lantern movie would be too expensive

    by hank henshaw

Unless they do a half-assed attempt, like the proposed Jack Black vehicle from a few years back. To me, Green Lantern should be made into a trilogy. First, Emerald Dawn: Hal Jordan rises to become the greatest Green Lantern ever. Emerald Twilight: Hal confronts the Corps and the Guardians after the destruction of his city. Emerald Night (or something): with Jordan gone insane it falls to Kyle Rayner to put an end to it. Of course there could be a second trilogy where Hal Jordan gets redemption. Now, about Supermax, most of those villians aren't even C-listers. Why cant Warner just be faithful to the source material? Nolan's Batman is okay, but it's not incredibly faithful to the comics... not to mention Superman Returns.

    by lex romero

    8foottall has it spot on.

Everyone complains about superhero origin films essentially having the same plot points and action beats. Here we're handed an original sounding superhero concept and people start to complain. As 8foottall said, GA is cool and all but he's not got as wide a fanbase or as interesting character that a standard origin film would most likely be mediocre. So we get a prison break out film as well as a superhero film, plus we get a shit load of B and C list villians. Who doesn't love the sound of that? with all these superhero films you get the feeling whilst superheroes are always being created there's rarely any supervillians. Here we'll finally get to see a world where supervillians are as common place as superheroes)

Yes it'll be a shame we won't get to see GA in his suit that much and using his bow and arrow (though come on obviously third act after break out he'll get back into his suit and bow) but if it's in exchange for an original and fantastic sounding superhero flick i'm ok with that.

If supermax gets the greenlight i'm thinking that'll be a launching point for a the flash script and green lantern script to get a go ahead as well, and they'll all be conected as part of the same DCU. Whilst the batman and supes film universes will stay seperate for now. Like how Spidey will stay seperate from Marvelfilm U due to sony having the rights. That's what i'd do if i were DC anyway.

A good Green Lantern movie would be the next Star Wars

    by messi

It's fucking Star Wars meets Superheroes. You don't make a superhero movie, you make a space opera movie whose main character is a superhero. You get Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons to write it, Johns because he is the only human who has made Hal Jordan interesting and a mythic hero and Gibbons because he writes supporting characters as memorable as any from Star Wars plus he has a great grip on the world/universe aspect of Green Lantern. What you don't do is get the writer/showrunner of Brothers and Sisters to direct the movie. The guy who says anyone can wear the ring, when we know that people are chosen by their ability to overcome fear.

A good Green Lantern movie would make a mark in pop culture, it needs to be magical, it needs to be cool that kids leave the theatre wishing they could be a Green Lantern and construct anything they want.

Whilst Spidey 1, Spidey 2, Iron Man were all real good movies, they were comic book movies, with comic book movie conventions and beats etc. Batman Begins fucked with that and instead did a Crime Drama with a superhero in it which is what shoudl happen from now on. by crankyoldguy

Green Lantern is what we need. and the first film based Emerald Dawn is a good idea. Second film, though should bring in Stewart, Gardner and even Kyle at the end. have to question Parllax and rebirth and all working with a mass audience for film; it may just be too convoluted, complex, etc. Yes, John and Gibbons, with a pitch-in from Denny O'Neil who deserves the bucks from Hollywood. And if they wanna toss in Green Arrow in the second film and do a little 'hard travelin'' -that would work. NO Common as Stewart and someone early to mid-30s at least as Hal Jordan, then he can age a bit and Kylle can be the CW-young 20s kid type. A decade ago, Dennis Quaid could've pulled off a Guy Garner, but now...? Anyone have any ideas? For Jordan, I was thinking (as others have) Nathan Fillion, though Matthew Fox might work; the Racer X thing turned out to be not so high profile. It's all about the Green. Lantern over Arrow. Of course, there was the Green Lama back in the Golden Age, even way before crankoldguy's time and get this - A Buddist in the original pulp magazine stories.

Green Arrow's quiver is like MacGuyver's swiss army knife

    by liquidken420

Cool thing about using Green Arrow is that he's the sort of character that can pull off a bunch of MacGuyver style shit to escape. I mean, the dude has like 140 different types of arrows in that quiver of his, and always seems to pull out the right one for any given situation. That's the mark of a pretty darn resourceful guy.

Don't tell me that, even without his bow & arrow, he couldn't apply that sort of resourcefulness to escaping from this uber-prison. He may not be genius-guy like Batman or whatever, but he's no dummy and he's pretty resourceful.

I'm sure Goyer came up with the concept and story first, THEN decided on which character to use, and decided Green Arrow was the most appropriate choice. Given the fact that a person is gonna have to pull of some big-time MacGuyver shit to escape from this prison, I'd say Ollie is as good a choice as any.

I wish more SuperHero movies would abandon the tired "origin story set-up". If they ever do a Flash movie, his entire backstory should be told in a 30 second speedforce flashback. The worst part of Batman Begins, for me,were the endless shots of Heres where he got the car,Heres where he got the suit,Heres where he makes his batarangs....that shit should have been a one minute montage and not 40 minutes of the fucking movie.

They need to start a movie division for DC characters...

    by prof. pop-cult

Marvel Studios was created to shepherd Marvel characters to the movies. I think the same needs to happen for DC: Time Warner should start a division ("DC Studios") that is focused only on developing, and overseeing, DC properties as live-action movies and TV shows. "DC Studios" should be staffed in the upper, creative decision making level by at least a significant number of DC Comics people.Ideally, DC Studios should be started right after Christopher Nolan does one more Batman movie. (And after that, the Nolan-Batman series should come to an end, as a neatly wrapped up trilogy.) The first project for DC Studios should be a Justice League movie.

    by blindambition238

but Begins is still considered a good movie, which I think it is. But how rare is it to hear, 'yea the movie was good, but the script/ dialog was pretty bad'. One would think that a bad script would inevitably lead to a shitty movie no matter what. I guess thats a credit to Nolan and crew. Glad that him and his bro did the TDK script since I really enjoyed The Prestige.

    Jobacca: Agreed

    by prof. pop-cult

That's my point about Time Warner needing to start a movie division (an in-house subsidiary of Warner Bros. Studios) solely focused on DC (and Vertigo) properties. I imagine there must be someone among the DC Comics ranks who would be most qualified to lead such a division. The suits at Warner Bros. simply do not have the know-how and singular focus to greenlight most of these DC-related project. So I say they need to put all these projects on hold, gather up all the scripts so far (including Super Max, Green Lantern, Justice League, Wonder Woman, Man of Steel, Supergirl, etc.), and then pass them onto a newly formed "DC Studios" division to suss through. All DC and Vertigo related movie ideas should be put on hold until such a new division is started up (the exception would be a third Nolan Batman movie). But I think they can start DC Studios as Nolan is shooting his third Batman. (And as much as I enjoy Nolan's take on Batman, I think it would be best to retire his vision after a third movie. Nolan is sticking to a "realistic" take on Batman. So I think rebooting Bats for a Justice League movie, after Nolan finishes a trilogy, would mark a good start for DC Studios, and the Batman and Superman characters.)

    by prof. pop-cult

I caught it again recently on Spike. It doesn't hold up too well on repeat viewings. The dramatic vibe is so ponderous that the pacing of the plot moves like a rock. We gave it a pass because it was the first Batman movie to treat the character seriously, and we were thankful for that.

    by brians life

I loved it. Thought it captured the elements of Batman I thought most important. But I can understand why some don't enjoy it like I do. The action was lacking and some plot point trodded on a bit. I'm sure others would've rather less focus on the crime drama elements and more comic book movie like beats. It's easily one of MY favorite comic book movies. It was also just a GREAT movie...acting, drama, Tom Wilkinson,.....GLAD we lost Katie holmes (hate that twitchy faced bitch)

I'd much rather see Justice League. They proudly talk about how they'll stick a bunch of B and C grade villains in the movie? Yeah, that's what I want. A movie with leftover baddies, and a hero who might as well be Joe Shmoe because whatever separates him from the rest of the action-heroes in moviedom has been stripped away. This is Green Arrow, a world-class Justice League-level superhero. We deserve something incredible; if WB has $70M extra sitting around, or whatever this is going to cost, then make something more fantastic, more crazy, more *out there*. Why the need to make what'll amount to *just* another action movie?

First most people loved Batman Begins and the origin was the best part, take some ritalin. Second DC don't need an Avi Arad, they need a Kevin Fiege, Avi is the business/rape/corporation side of Marvel, Kevin Fiege is the creative guy who keeps things in line, he's not perfect but he's something, something that actually holds a marvel creative committee to go over each movie, said move was where they got rid of The Mandarin in Iron Man and beefed up Obadiah Stane due to Mark Millar's assesment of the script. DC do have a movie guy, it's Gregory Novak, but he has little control and he has no idea what he's doing, Batman Begins was all Nolan.

...would work best introduced in a Justice League flick. An origin story movie would be too lightweight and familiar(he is afterall, very similar to Batman and the creators admit they needed a less "darker" non powered costumed hero. Perhaps they should just wait, introduce him in a JL movie (if it ever gets made!) and then perhaps if necessary he could have a spin off. This movie sounds like a sequel to spin off GA movie, and any non fan boys reading that article would find it baffling. Warner Bros. must take a lesson in how Marvel is handling its characters and proposed spin offs.

Didn't bother with a mask, the hooded coat was practical for the weather, and he was willing to put an occasional arrow through someones eye if they needed it. Goyer does come up with new concepts at least

    by nerosday

Say what you want about his ability, but you have to give him credit for his creativity. At least he is trying something different. He’s giving the movie going public the credit of dropping us into the middle of a character and story and saying, “Here, now go with it and catch up,” instead of another plodding origin movie. The idea is sound for marketing too. You have to admit, selling the Green Arrow is gonna be tough, no matter how great of a character he is, and he is. Most noncomic folk would look at a solo GA movie and go, “eh, no superpowers and he shoots a bow in arrow and dresses like Robin Hood. I’m gonna pass.” My wife did when I mentioned it to her. The idea however of anchoring it with not only our hero, but also the fact that it a show case for vast numbers of DC’s villains, that might serve as a larger drawing point. Top that off with the fact that people will leave knowing what a cool character Ollie is, it could really help pay off for DC too, as due to the cloistered nature of the Superman and Batman franchises, the DC Movie U doesn’t have the feeling of a whole world unto itself yet the way the Marvel Movie Universe does, especially after Iron Man. I would pay to see this, just don’t make it too soft.

I think I might have a minor geekgasm if they had a bald Clancy as Luthor. To me he always nailed the voice at least. That's a character I have never been happy with in his film incarnations. Hackman, great actor he is, just hammed it up, and Spacy again was over the top instead of low key. But, man, Clancy's voice; that sly drone, as if the entire world bores him in his megalomania. I love that take.

Anyway, i did see the episode in question. Here's a thought. Perhaps they didn't spend too much creativity in making the homage to the original costume look good because they WANTED to play up the revised costume. Y'think? Did the electric company Spider-Man costume look good? No it did not. But the costume from the modern movies does look good and it's basically the same. There are aesthetic differences between the Reeve Superman Costume and the Routh one, but it's basically the same. Yet people fall on either side of the fence on that one. essentially, they gave GA a cheesy variation on purpose and you're using it as an example. I'm just calling you on that.

i know it's all opinion, but what makes Green Arrows costume any more silly than Spider-Mans, Supermans, daredevils, Electras, Ghost Riders or any other super hero who has made it to the screen? The general populace has been willing to accept them, why not GA? And saying Black Canary was voted in aninternet poll as having one of the worst costumes proves my point. The woman wears a one piece black corset and fishnets. That's freaking mundane. That's like voting Zatanna as having a bad costume. I can find a million more zanny unbelievable costumes watching a real life fashion show. And that thought makes me laugh anytime i here about "silly superhero costumes". I have no doubt talented costume designers could make a tradtional GA costume work with little aesthetic changes.

Green Arrow is a great character!

    by wormie1

He's up there with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash. It seems a bit strange to do a Green Arrow movie without that title and without the costume. This just smacks of the crappy old low-budget/TV versions they did before X-Men. I did actually like Justin Hartley as Ollie. Perhaps if they did a movie, they could use him. I doubt we'd see Luthor or Joker in it though. Anyway, Warners has yet to do anything with their huge DC library outside of Supes and Bats. It baffles me that Marvel has made a slew of mostly successful movies out of their A, B, and even D (Blade!) characters, and Warners has yet to respond to that beside resurrecting their two big franchises.

And no changes to the Green Arrow costume please. Pretty much every superhero costume is ridiculous, and I think most audiences have accepted that, so I doubt it will hurt the movie's success at all. You have to be pretty crazy to be a superhero, so having a crazy costume makes sense

    Blade worked precisely because

    by kungfuhustler84

he was such an obscure character to most people at the time, so they could take in his story without question and just have fun without constantly questioning things. Plus the movie was treated in a very mature manner and it worked tremendously. If Supermax deals with its material along the same vein, this could be something really incredible

    by blindambition238

I clearly stated in my previous posts and the post you were calling me out for that I like Batman Begins. I was just pointing out the fact that while it is a good movie, many people have noted that Goyer's script was the weak link in the movie, specifically the pacing in some parts, the formulaic third act (microwave doomsday device and Gordon in the tumbler), and awkward dialog ("Why do we fall?", "Its not what I say that defines me..." "Didn't you get the memo", "Yes!!!", "Nice coat", Rachel's speech in the car, and the way "fear" is repeated ad nauseum by everyone in case we can't figure out the 'theme' of the movie). However, as I clearly stated, while these things would usually be enough to ruin a movie, somehow Batman Begins manages to be a great film thanks to its excellent cast and direction. Hope that clears things up for you. Also, as a fellow comic nerd, I'm sure you have some pretty passionate and interesting opinions about this stuff, but seriously, immediately referring to me as a 'fucker' for not agreeing 100% with you about a movie isn't just rude, but also makes any argument you have seem less credible. I'm sure you can do better man.

That guy who played Russel Crowes 2nd in command in 3:10 to Yuma should play Green Arrow. He's intense, he can act and he's obscure enough that the movie will be about the character and not the actor.

I think they should go the route of Robert Downey Jr. and Micheal Keaton. Hire an actor who can actually act, not some A List action star.

Brad Pitt is rumored for Thor isnt he? Him or HHH.

What actor who isn't Brad Pitt or Matt Damon, could everyone see in the role? I could say Johnny Depp, but he's now A-list. I think Stuart Townsend could pull off Green Arrow.

I would like to see Captain Cold played by Robert Patrick being all "Hannibal Lector" and kind of helping Ollie out while pulling the strings for his own escape the whole time. Take out some of those shit villans and give us Grodd,Grundy,Captain Boomerang...some that I actually remember. I'm opposed to a Joker cameo but a Luthor cameo would own. Just get Clancey Brown.

    by kevred

Though you know you're dealing with a questionable stable of characters when you've got that many "names" in it and the film isn't named after any of them. It'd really be something to see if done right, but is DC really willing to blow most of their villain store on one oddball film, when, let's be honest, they don't really have that many good characters to begin with (in my opinion)?

I don't retract my statement, because I believe that you guys are assuming he isn't up there with Michael Corleone since I know you've probably haven't seen the transformation. If you actually watch from the start how Lex unravels over the seasons to the episode Descent where his obsession leads him to kill his father, then maybe you'd agree with me. But somehow I know that you guys are just thinking that it's not possible without actually investigating. Also just because Michael Corleone turned from good to bad in under 3 hours doesn't make it good, alot of people turn from good to evil over a long long time like Lex and you can see it in the show, the way that Clark is creating him indirectly and Lex is creating Clark indirectly too. Infact Michael turning so fast and easily makes him seem dumber than Luthor and also makes the change less dramatic because not everyone changes so quickly. Whilst it was realistic it's not as epic, because Michael basically had a bad streak in him and just decided to kill the guys who killed his father and then the ball rolls. Kind of simplistic but still realistic. But so is Luthor where only in the past 3 or 4 episodes has he become the Supervillain he is in the comics. And mrjjonz aren't you the brit who wants a cloth suited batman? and Lost Jarv who some people said was pretty ignorant for his comments on green lantern.

McConaughey for CAPTAIN AMERICA and Pitt for GREEN ARROW

    by jdanielp

I can see Matthew McConaughey as either CAPTAIN AMERICA or GREEN ARROW. Brad Pitt, for some reason, seems better suited for GREEN ARROW, from my perspective. If Pitt was actually signed for CAPTAIN AMERICA, he would just have to make the part more his own, in adding that more lifelike "ULTIMATES" feel. (That opening sequence of Captain America in the "ULTIMATES" during WWII would rock. And I could see a buff Brad Pitt in the classic gear kickin' Nazi butt, with really cool artistic vision from the right director.)

    by laughing irishman

Apparently some of you 'geeks' don't know your comics as well as you think they do. GA was one of the Original Members of the Justice League and pretty close to be Hal Jordan (the bassass green lanterns) brother. I'm a little dissapointed with the premise of this movie seeing as how they have an assload of material from the Grell series which, IMO was one of the better written comics in the 90's. It outdid Marvel in grittiness. This movie could rock, and it could suck.

As it's been said, they should do the Longbow Hunters or the Kevin Smith revamping of Green Arrow, but that one is definately aimed at Green Arrow fans.

Batman Begins was an excellent film

    by juemad

It focused on the character of Bruce Wayne and what drove him to the extreme of becoming a vigalante.

Most first films of comic book adaptations have little action because of budget. Compare the action between Spiderman 1 and 2, or X-Men 1 and 2. There's a marked jump in action in the 2nd films. There's not a ton of action in Iron Man and you can bet your bottom dollar there will be twice as much in the sequel.
