NBCU Maybe Producing BATTLESTAR GALACTICA TV-Movies This Summer??

Published at:  May 16, 2008 5:04:55 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

From the fabulous Maureen Ryan at the Chicago Tribune:

As Galactica Sitrep noted Thursday, an internet radio show, The Doctor and Mrs. Who, reported last night that up to three “Battlestar Galactica” TV movies may get made later this year. Several sources at the show confirm that those films are indeed being discussed right now.

Executives are now doing number-crunching for these proposed films, and any deals for these movies are far from done. However, it would make sense to make more “Battlestar” TV movies while the show’s creative team and actors are still all in one place, as it were.

Ryan further notes that series mastermind Ron Moore is currently writing the series finale, that as many as three movies could be made, and if the movies do get made they'll get made this summer.

I’m guessing the plan being bandied about is to air the movies this autumn, before the final 10 episodes of the series finally hit NBC-Universal’s SciFi Channel.

I’m also guessing the TV-movies will, like “Razor” and the soon-to-shoot Cylon-genesis project “Caprica,” serve as prequels to the current season-four storylines. Moore has, in a David Chase-like manner, repeatedly rejected the notion of continuing the “Galactica” story beyond its coming series finale.

Ryan's story also tells us a new set of webisode shorts will link the first and second halves of season four.

Read all of Ryan’s story on the matter here.

good to hear that Ron Moore's writing the series finale... i certainly wouldn't say no to more Galactica movies if they enhance the final season... one wonders what these movies would be about? probably individual character studies, like Razor... maybe one dealing with the Cylons, or one about the final Cylon (if he/she is revealed by then)... good news, we'll see if it comes together

Tell me they're seriously not still entertaining the notion of holding Galactica eps 11-20 for 2009? The suits at Scifi keep managing to surprise me with their awesome direction for the network and complete lack of caring for their viewers.

I hope Moore doesn't kill everyone off, that would be a pretty crap ending. And after all the shit Moore talked about Voyager, they'd better not reach Earth in the final few seconds of the last episode...

Loved Razor but how many loose ends can they tie up in TV movies? One focusing on the Cylons would be awesome. Following the Cylon decision to attack Earth would be interesting. Anything set in the First Cylon War would be awesome. Hmm.

Razor had its moments, but it ultimately felt forced and I found it difficult to get back into a s2 mind-set at the end of s3. 3 more of backwards-looking TVM's might be pushing it. It sounds like some exec has realized BSG is a decent show just as they're reaching the end, and is trying to squeeze extra mileage out of it while they still can. Still, I trust RDM to make it work and take heed of lessons learned from Razor (i.e, make the TVMs less confusing and straightforward).

I'm with you Gotham, I thought Season 4 would go more in that direction, old school cylons /centurions fighting the skinjobs. What is happening instead is a bunch of convoluted BS.

If caprica goes through as planned, the whole timeline of cylons is f'd up. It's the case of trying to squeeze blood from a turnip.

Stick to the lore of BS Galactica, Humans created cylons as shiny toasters, they rebelled, they disappeared, they evolved on their own. Easy right!! that is more than enough to keep us entertained.

space battles, shiny cylons, final batte. the end.

Airing them this autumn before the final 10...

    by nohubris

...could afford a chance to go deeper and give explanations behind the mythical aspect of the show which has so many unanswered questions. We are still unclear about the Temple of Jupiter, the Final Five, the In-Heads, Kobol, Lords of Kobol, the 13th tribe and its journey to Earth, along with the Cylon religion. The movies can fix that in a way the final episodes cannot.

Grand Idea, sir! If they do air them in the middle of the assine, ass-hole mid-season gaping rupture that has been sinisterly slashed into S4, it could at least suggest that one suit at SciFi might not be dumber than an amoeba. But they will likely opt to continue showing wrestling, so holding of breath is ill-advised.

I'm sorry, but when did he ever do a bunch of Sopranos prequels, as opposed to doing a sequel. Just because he concluded the series, and felt the need to not elaborate upon it does not its the same thing. If you need to draw a parallel between this and anything, it's to Lynch, with Twin Peaks, and Fire Walk With Me.

I certainly see the similarities to the other religions you mention (which stems from TOS creator Larson). However, my thoughts are that RDM is also re-imagining that part of BSG too.Did you ever think that all this may not be about religion at all, but about man and machine both trying to be god-like and having major adverse implications on the BSG universe?.For example, it is possible that the Lords of Kobol were something other than what their mythic status portrays them to be. Think about it. If the tragedy at Kobol never happened and Kobol was never abandoned, the near destruction of the human race would have never occurred. Unlike Mt. Olympus in our universe, in the BSG universe Kobol is "real" and it would be interesting to see a movie that gives some explanation to it, even if TPTB keep some of the mystery around it (which they should IMHO).Just a thought.
