A Teaser For THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR Conquers The Nets!!

Published at:  May 16, 2008 10:00:26 AM CDT

Merrick here...

The first teaser for THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR is online over at MSN.

Even though I don't like the way the trailer itself is assembled (over-voiced & wrongly voiced), seems there's some fun stuff & nice production values in the movie. We also get a few glimpses of the Yeti sequence previoulsy blogged about by director Rob Cohen (HERE).

I won't miss Stephen Sommers' directing here (although he's a producer on the project), but Rachel Weisz absence will certainly be felt. Maria Bello (Viggo's wife in HISTORY OF VIOLENCE) takes over Weisz's role.

See it...

HERE!!!

It was a good summer flick. I don't think I've ever seen it since I saw it in theaters. The best thing about mummy 1 was when Brenden throws the chair at a guy and knocks him down. Hilarious. Rob Cohen though was been pretty terrible. I thought Dragonheart was a good film, but then I watched it again since the last time I saw it when I was a kid. And it was pretty bad. He is like a bad Renny Harlin.

Question:How do you make a Mummy sequel even worse than The Mummy Returns? Answer: You hire Rob Cohen. A man, remarkedly enough, even less talented than Stephen Sommers. In the year that marks the return of Indiana Jones, I don't need me no crappy sequel to some crappy second grade Indy knockoff wannabe.

rachel weisz. it was never HER movie. it was never her series. she was always secondary to fraser. i honestly forgot she was in the first two, i bet you the rest of the world did too. you all keep crying about how she's gone, but that really isn't gonna affect anything. if she was in the movie and it was the SAME EXACT movie, would that change your opinion of it? who cares if someone else has taken over her exact character. it hasn't hurt the bond franchise. but people aren't crying about that one. this movie looks fun and retarded and that's all it's supposed to be. and honestly, the CG in this feels natural cause CG was always a big part of the series. as for the CG in Indy? Yeah, I don't know about that.

Great Marketing Strategy: "Mummy 3 - It's Kinda Like 'The Mummy'

    by llghtst0rmer

"From the Producers of the Mummy and The Mummy Returns" - if you have to point out the producers are still on board, it only proves you know this movie is removed from the other two. Universal knows this one is a Hail Mary - they're gonna throw it out there and simply hope people catch it.

    Better than Indy!?

    by codymr

hmmm... can't say I agree with that at all. The best thing about the Indy series is that you have to wait to see the full power of the MacGuffin in the last reel. In the Mummy films, they blow their wad with the supernatural stuff at the end of the first act, so for the rest of the film you snooze though CGI action scene after CGI action scene until the end credits.

I actually feel kind of sorry for Universal this summer...

    by llghtst0rmer

I just took a look at the studio's website for their summer releases... Leatherheads (done,) Forgetting Sarah Marshall (well praised but done,) Baby Mama (DONE,) The Strangers (the who?) Mamma Mia (this year's Little Miss Yeah, Right,) The Incredible Hulk (fingers crossed,) Hellboy II (here's hoping,) and Mummy 3 (It's craaaptastic!) I'm willing to bet Indiana Jones and Dark Knight make more between the two of them than Uni's entire summer slate. I'd almost even go so far as to believe EACH of them might bank more than the whole Universal summer load. Maybe next time, Uni.

This series was always tongue in cheek

    by terry1978

The danger was real, but for the most part the characters all knew of the cliches and had a "how the fuck is this happening?" type of response to the weirdness around them, which I always liked.

No, Crystal Skull is the latest film in a greatly entertaining film series, and as such highly anticipated. This, on the other hand, is the latest film in a crappy third rate film series, that just seems to get worse and more unwatchable with each successive film. See the difference now?

    Cohen undervalued Weisz big time

    by drath

According to his interview with Sci Fi Wire, whe objected to having a grown son in the story so his answer was "Okay. Bye." Asshole. Frasier doesn't look right with a grown son either frankly, as wrong as Harrison Ford with a 13-ish daughter despite being great-grandpa age. Sure it's possible, but it sucks. Aside from that, the 3-headed dragon and Yeti look good. How drunk/stoned/retarded do you have to be to think Bello is similar type to Weisz? Yeah it matters! If you don't care about that because it's not effects-related then you really are just the hack they said you were, Cohen. At least find another British actress, I'm sure someone out there would have fit this role better.

    A ROB COHEN FILM

    by harry weinstein

You're only supposed to start insisting on that sort of ego-forndling title card in the trailers after you come out with something that really blows my mind and makes me realize that I'd unfairly had you pegged as a generally sort of a clockpuncher of a director, a guy capable of decent work when the stars are properly aligned. Until then, I can honestly say I enjoyed DRAGON for what it was. And we'll leave it at that.

    This ain't no Raiders

by the dolphins are in the jacuzzi

But, then again, neither were the last two Indy movies. Let's face it - that series is alot like the Matrix - a great start and two decent but uninspiring sequels. As for the Mummy movies, the first was a guilty pleasure (for me anyway), but the second was irritating as hell, and the Scorpion King...the less said about it, the better. This one looks like it could be another guilty pleasure, or it could be a complete train wreck; hard to tell. Also, one of the things that killed the Mummy Returns and the 2nd Indy movie was the introduction of an obnoxiously "cute" kid Macaulay Culkining his way through the movie and chewing up every bit of scenery in his path (much like The Legend of Zorro and Blues Brothers 2000). New rule, Hollywood: no kids in action movie sequels. Period. As for Indy 4 "owning" anything this summer, I doubt it. Lucas hasn't owned anything for twenty-plus years, except for the rights to his old movies which he keeps fucking up. Wake up, Lucas fans, it's over.

In terms of box office, you're right. But I'm talking about quality. Hell, Lucas could release an art house film about the dysfunctional childhood of Jar-Jar, and it would make millions - witness that monstrosity of a cartoon that in any sane universe would never even make it to video. But it doesn't take away from the fact that everything he's done since Raiders has been one long downhill slide in quality.

    Bizarre but true...

    by moonlightdrive

[SPOILER] According to the only current online review for this movie the third act opens with a Hollywood plausible twist revealing Rachel Weisz to in fact be Brendan Fraser's characters 'mummy'. Apparently he is the love child of a brief affair Weisz's character had with Dwayne Johnson in The Mummy Returns. The news of this causes Fraser's character to spotaneously combust conveniently killing the lead villain played by Jet Li.

    MUMMY 3 - Everything I Want

    by spymunk

MUMMY 3's trailer has all the sense of fun/action/sense of adventure that's so painfully missing from so many movie trailers this summer - the sense that the movie is promising one thing, and it's going to deliver on everything it promises. It tells you it's going to be a silly romp across the globe with brash heroes and cruel villains and it's putting the tone right there in the trailer. It looks like a blast, and unabashedly fun for anyone who can actually still enjoy just going to the movies and having a good time. I can't wait!

Looks pretty cool. Good fun. I don't think there are FANS of the movie who are going to give a shit about changes in it. The one thing I didn't like was the stolen shot from Hero with the wall of arrows....Also anyone complaing about other movies missing shit in their trailers. Whatever this summer movie season is going to be awesome which is hasn't been in a couple of years. Like I pretty much want to see every movie thats coming out. Should've cast a uber hot Asian love interest & ditched Bello

    by big dumb ape

I think this looks great! I'll be there opening weekend. Hey, it's summer and I want to get my ass out of the heat, into a cool theater, and simply be able to sit there with a large popcorn and soda and hot dog and enjoy myself for 2 hours. I think this has a good cast, Frasier makes a likable hero, and overall I think the movie looks like a blast. My only complaint is that if Weisz and the original little kid weren't coming back...and they're going to say that several years have since gone by (thus explaining why the kid has been recast and is now so much older)...then why not just take it the extra step adn say Weisz died along the way on some adventurous dig? What, are there really THAT many Evee fans out there? And if they are, I'm sure they're fans BECAUSE of the way Weisz played her, so put her to rest properly. Why not just have Frasier be in mourning and then, in the course of this thing, have him hook up with some ultra hot Asian actress and fall in love. I would have bought that far more easily then recasting the role with Bello, who now will pull me out of things a bit...

    by lagomorph

The dif between Indy and Mummers is that after watching the Mummy3 trailer I feel like I've seen the whole movie already and it seriously lacks any suspense or craft.

When I watched the Indy4 trailer I wanted to see more. What is this crystal skull, who is this russian woman, Why is Shia Lebeuf in it, and can an aging indy still swing it.

OK, it was little flaccid, but I prefer NOT to know the twists and turns before riding the coaster.

have the "sky full of arrows comin' at cha" scene? With the three headed dragon, snow beast, and other CGI beasties, looks like Cohen is getting even for his Sinbad project falling by the wayside. Would be nice if Harryhausen would get a dedication. I know it's a backhanded compliment attached to this movie, but it would be about time.
