Wow...Wahlberg Really Does Suck In THE HAPPENING!! Extended Clip Now Online!!
Merrick here...
A few days back, a particularly scathing review of M. Night Shyamalan’s THE HAPPENING hit the Nets. You can find that review HERE.
In the piece, the reviewer states that THE HAPPENING offers the worst performance by Mark Wahlberg ever. Still, I couldn't help but think the writer may've been over exaggerating a bit. Then I saw an extended clip from the film, posted by Yahoo movies. And...yowza.
Said clip also features an introduction to/rationalization for the film by M. Night.
SEE IT HERE!!!
Between this and MAX PAYNE, 2008 doesn't look to be a particularly good year for Wahlberg. Ah, well, there's always hope for a Funky Bunch reunion.
SEE IT HERE!!!

...I might be pissed about the SPOILER title of this thread.
-
yowza
-
Just make the second departed movie Mark.
-
You actually meant sucks as in "Dude, this fucking sucks".
-
first
-
..said that M. Night Shyamalan needs an intervention. I agree.
-
C'mon, he's the only main guy that survives the first film, so why not?
-
darn
-
trailer looks good to me although zoooooooooooooooooooooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy is ridiculously wooden.
-
I don't know how he does it. His acting abilities go from great to terrible with the greatest ease.
-
Mr Wahlberg appears to be channelling Leonard Nimoy! Could this be the result of too many Botox Injections?...
-
M. Night Kinda reminds me of Brett Ratner's nerdy uncool brother. They talk the same. I think I would like to see a movie with the Adventures of Brett Ratner and M. Night.
-
And as a fan of m. Night I will say his intro makes him seem like an unrelenting tool. I think i turned after the village, this looks bad it better not be a 90 min metaphor again.
-
Sure most video game movies suck, but Payne was always a pretty cinematic story anyway so it should be a pretty good fit for a film.
-
but the dialogue sucked harder.
-
Night, why are you making one useless movie at a time?!

I love how the train driver(I assume) acts like he's in the mili
by scrumdiddly
The characters in Shyamalan's movies are always so unreal! Guess I'm stating the obvious there.
-
Honestly, I might think that clip was really scary if it hadn't been leaked all over the place last year what the big "secret" killer was. But I don't think Wahlberg is the only one delivering a bad performance in that clip. Every actor in that clip seemed off their game just a tad. But I'm willing to give it a chance, I'm still a fan of M.Night, the only movie he's ever made that I really disliked was The Village. Let's hope this is more Signs, and less Village. Honestly though, the guy is a great director... but I think he might be tapped on the writing side of things. I'd really like to see him take on someone else's writing.
-
At the utter... utter shitness of every feasible aspect of that clip. Can't wait for the full 2 hours!! (sarcasm)
-
Almost every time he writes an introduction to an article, it makes me think he's something of a twat. Perhaps I'm being unfair, but he doesn't seem very passionate about films, just seems to want to put everything down in that typical smart-arse internet way.
-
Damn You Michael Bay
-
....which is much, much, scarier: <p> http://tinyurl.com/49znms
-
The Boogaroo is in your pants! Wake the fuck up people!!!!
-
And I started doing the running man.
-
Goddamn that was bad.
-
He's a very good actor - when he's got the right director. <p> Shymalamadingdong directs all his to behave like Bruce Willis. Even the train conductors. Typical Night direction: "Just act like you got the life sucked out of you."
-
only difference is we're not using to the camera being dead smack in his face while he's acting. It wasn't just him, did anyone else notice the girl playing Leguizamo's daughter royally sucked too? Worst peformance in her career imo.
-
Yeah well, Mr Night that's people shaking with anger at how they were fooled into seeing your turd..!
-
that he had in Boogie Nights, when his mom threw him out of the house. I think this movie still looks interesting enough to see.
-
"Read ..." <p> Turns away. Pause. <p> "My." <p> Long pause with blank stare, Bush looks down. Cut to panning shot of curtains and crowd, then back to Bush. Bush raises head slowly to camera. Stares into camera as camera closes in on his lips. <p> "Lips."
-
Needs to stop talking about his movies. He needs to get his draft scripts into the hands of other writers to edit his ego out of them. Both Zooey and Wahlberg as less expressive than the tress in this clip, the only one acting is Legizamo.
-
you all have problems. Seriously, the movie looks great. Stop picking on the guy.
-
"Why are you giving me one piece of useless information at a time?" Just apply the up and down whiney pitch Wahlberg saves for hic choicest roles. I swear this is the same directing trick G. Lucas must have used. I think they are spiking the craft service table with zanex to get them actors to portray themselves that wooden.
-
saying SHAMALAMADINGDONG like they were the first to think it up. Wow. So original. Do you write your own material? No seriously that is really funny. I see what you did there. You took his name..which sort of sounds like that popular kids song...and well thats just genius. Comedic genius. Why waste your talents here when Hollywood is waiting for that next big adam sandler movie idea.
-
I didn't think Wahlberg's performance in that clip was that bad at all. The dialogue is what really sucked. And Zoey or whatever the fuck her name is, was far worse. And this is coming from someone who can't stand Wahlberg's acting. Even in The Departed, I thought he was piss poor. And Captain Katanga hit the nail on the head. Merrick is totally like a cynical internet loser that pisses all over everything. I have no idea why he is still allowed to write for this site.
-
...when I read a spoiler about it's big plot point (or "twist" ... whatever you wanna call it). Really, it's so lame that Trey Parker and Matt Stone would've rejected it as a Shyamalan-tweaking joke in the Imaginationland episode of South Park. It's a plot that was basically lifted from an old second-season (the lamest season, by the way) episode of the lamest sci-fi show ever, Space:1999! It's a singularity of lameness that sucks all lameness into itself creating an even greater force of suckness. Lady In the Water is gonna look like Citizen Kane next to The Happening. It's gonna have a 99.9999% career-kill percentage. Wahlberg better hope he can get the Funky Bunch back together for a nostalgic reunion tour. Zooey better hope her album sells. M. Night, though can hopefully retire on his earnings from Sixth Sense and Unbreakable... his only watchable movies.
-
Why so serious? Bad day at the office?
-
every movie he does he keeps casting himself in bigger and bigger roles. he had a cameo in "SIXTH SENSE" and by "LADY IN THE WATER" he was one of the leads. wondering if he should just stay behind the camera and stay focused on directing. he'll probably play a big character role in this one too. =0(
-
..and I just can't justify Lady in the Water. I tried so hard to find something to enjoy about that flick but good lord Shyamalan makes it really hard. And I dig all his flicks, yes even The Village. So I'm hoping HAPPENING is a return to form for him. I always thought Wahlberg was over rated as an actor. Never brings enough charm to carry a film by himself. Much better as a supporting actor if you ask me.
-
why don't you wait to see the movie before you start dumping on it. Wahlberg's performance looks just like his "boogie nights" performance, all wide eyed and aw shucks. but since right now it's "cool" to dump on shyamalan of course you're all doing it. I agree "the village" and "lady in the water" stunk but "the sixth sense" and "unbreakable" were very good. he can't have totally forgotten how to make movies.
-
walberg didnt really bother me. not exactly a scene where he can show off how good or bad he is
-
Wow, I've never seen such hyper-critical reviews. Everyone WANTS to hate M. Nights next movie. I for one can't wait to see this flick.
-
the problem is Shyamalan just can't write dialog, its an problem that goes through all his movies, great ideas with good structure and excellent suspense but not carried in any way by the words.
-
Shymalamadingdong just doesn't know how to direct actors except for Bruce Willis. Gibson and Phoenix were barely passable in Signs.
-
Has to!
-
Just wait and see. I know, The Village and LITW were pretty bad, and he really needs this one to be a hit or he's done. But I have to say, it's been a while since I've looked forward to an M. Night movie. It's his first R Rated flick, so it should be interesting.
-
I said it somewhere else. But his career is going the way of the Cage. He is going to start starring in any movie that comes his way, in hopes of being a success. And since he'll be in so many movies people will think he is a huge star..... wait after looking at Mark career, looks like he's already been doing that.. Rock Star/Shooter/The Yards/Invincible.
-
Mark Wahlberg is a very good actor but that his brother Donnie is actually better? He was very good in Boomtown but absolutely superb in Band of Brothers.<p>I'll actually give this movie the benefit of the doubt and say it may be good. But if it's excruciatingly bad, what are the Vegas odds that Harry will love it? I actually got the search engine to work and looked at Harry's M Night reviews and he's gushed over every one of them.
-
Whoever said that's the worst performance obviously hasn't seen The Truth About Charlie, which was doubtlessly far, FAR worse with Marky than this. Zoey looked a helluva lot worse. What the fuck happened to Shyamalan being so damn good at directing actors, if nothing else? I'll probably see this regardless, but I think my expectations just got lower.
-
He's removing 3 vertebrae from his spine so that he can suck his own cock.<br><br>Damn, I love most of his movies, but I feel his next flick will just be him talking into the camera for 90 minutes, moving his hands and telling us how lucky we are to be there.
-
People really just want to hate him. His writing is pretty damn good. Not sure why people have turned on him like this. He creates some of the best genre pictures without having to mock the genre or have elbow nudging humor. He writes heart felt characters and puts them in extraordinary situations. Just like someone whose name ends with IELBERG. And Stevens filmography is filled with many duds as well. You guys are being way too hard on Night. Sixth Sense, Unbreakale, and Signs are good enough to stomach the ultimate crap Lady and the marginally good but not great VILLAGE. To shit on him now is to just jump on some dumbass bandwagon.
-
over on joblo, the movie does look good but can't get over the cliche dialogue.
-
He's not. At all. His movies were good through Signs, but his ego derailed the last two. The dialogue and performances in this clip are unbelievably bad. And note to everyone - trees do not make good villains.
-
From the clips I've seen there looks to be some great looking moments in the film. Like some others I've felt Shyamalan's recent movies have been god awful. I'm still crossing my fingers for this one.
-
Clip looks very Hitchcockian to me, I thought it looked rather cool to be honest, there goes my street cred with the kiddies :)
-
Apparently -- Boston -- got -- hit. She's worse than he is. And to M. Night: people outside the theater were holding themselves and each other because your enormous ego just raped them for 90 minutes.
-
I think we don't like him, because he is just doing Twilight zone episodes. If he was just making a new twilight zone TV, and these were new episodes every week then yeah I think he'd be pretty good. Like say he got a deal with Showtime or HBO. Yeah then his style would work very well and he would probably get more respect. But as whole movies... no. Also after seeing Aziz's Mind Explosions on Human Giant, I am always going to think that thats how M. Night is.
-
when there are performances more grating than Leguizamo's on display. Crap, I was looking forward to this.
-
Yeah he's better, he's DUDDITS!! I honestly didn't find anything extremely horrible about the clip. It's kinda difficult to judge considering we don't see what is freaking everyone out when the clip starts.
-
that bad in the extended clip. Different, yes. A weirdo? Maybe. I'm reserving judgement till I see it. Gore would be nice in an M Night movie.
-
I think the movie's going to be pretty creepy, showing people commit suicide unwillingly. Anything above Hayden Christensen level performance is good enough for me.
-
Nope. The only movie of his I saw in theaters was Signs and hated every minute of it. I just kept thinking to myself, I bet Twilight zone is on right now on Sci-Fi. I will probably netflicks this way down the line though, but I won't pay to see it.
-
Wahlberg's acting in that clip is no better or worse than anything he's ever been in.
-
EVERYONE sucked in that clip - Wahlberg, Zooey, the Conductor. Yowza!
-
He was great in Invincible.<p>I still think my favorite role for him was in Three Kings.
-
I just watched the clip. MY entire body was filled with chills. And yes, I know "the secret". Whatever naysayers... I've loved all of M. Night's movies, even Lady in the Water (even if I'd only give that one a B+). This film looks like it will be one of his best yet. I'll be there June 13th for sure.
-
Anything inanimate is intrinsically creepy. That sounds wrong. Well, what I mean is, that scene in Halloween where Mike Myers is just standing at the end of the bed with a white sheet over him is infinitely scarier than him just running and screaming to Telephone Girl and doing his thing. When I heard the villains were trees, I thought brilliant, they could do something similar to this, but wind blowing through them to symbolise something sinister is plain fucking patronising. "Ooooooooooooooh the leaves are shaking!" "But how is the tree controlling the wind?" "Be quiet. This Is. HORROR!!!!!!!!! With. Serious. Environmental. Undertooooooooooooooooones!"
-
can't begin to say how much of a douchebag M Night comes off as by wanking himself off over his own genius for five minutes before showing us a totally unspectacular clip. But Zooey is cute as a button as a stage prop. that is all.

Atleast M. Night is out there trying something new...
by cameron1975willi
...where as all you Talkbackers ain't doing nothin' but whining. Good luck with that! I think this film looks interesting and I wanna see it.
-
I've liked most of his offerings and I still think Unbreakable is brilliant (and was the template for the inferior Heroes TV show) and even when the man falls short at least he keeps trying new things. I think his biggest misstep was The Villiage and even that kept me entertained. I've stayed away from spoilers for this flick because it's nice to go into his movies without knowing much; you simply never know what you're going to get. But yes, people love to piss all over the guy and I really don't understand why. At least he's trying to innovate, which is more than I can say for most directors.
-
Better call the farmer seems to be alot of sheep on this talkback
-
Yeah Three Kings is probably the highlight of all three of those actors careers. Throw Jammie Kennedy in there as well since he was lucky enough to appear in it. Its David O's best as well. That is a really fucking good film. Looks like George and Spike are the only ones who may be able to top it in the future.

I can't speak for the others, but I'm not hatin' on Night
by Hawaiian Organ Donor
At least I don't think I am. I just haven't liked any of his stuff after Sixth Sense. I gave them a fair shot but just didn't like them. I didn't like Transformers or Crash either, regardless of the people that told me they were great. Whaddya gonna do? If you don't like a movie you don't like it.<p>Spielberg is still my all time favorite director but even he doesn't get a free pass. He must think Thanksgiving is celebrated several times a year because he makes a lot of turkeys. But when he's on, holy Christ on cocaine, he's on.<p>I'll watch The Happening with the same open mind I had for Juno and will actually hope for a different result.
-
SHOOTER TOO Bob Lee Swagger gets a new dog, and resurrects Danny Glover to kill him again.
-
Someone had to say it.
-
that would make a great movie.
-
I said it earlier. On the other M Night bashback.
-
Will he love it or really love it? Oh and the best post on the other talkback was the "Maniac Crop" one. That was comedy gold! Happy Friday! gfy
-
you cant judge actor's performance from a clip without context, without seeing the entire scene. it's stupid. now, wahlberg is not the best actor around, but i cant help but feel merrick is just aching to put down this film.
-
Is a great story that can translate AMAZINGLY well into a movie. It all depends of course how it's handled, but I have BIG hopes for it. People talking about three kings, i thought that was a great movie.
-
Okay I've never seen his first two movies...but his third movie The Sixth Sense was pretty good. I mean once. Tried watching it a second time years later and it was pretty dull. His fourth movie Unbreakable was awesome...of course I'm a big comic book guy...but then again I haven't tried watching it a second time. Signs...it was okay the first time through...some funny moments (the tin foil hats) but once again tried watching it a second time and it was dull. I never had an ounce of desire to watch The Village cause it looked and from what I've heard sounds retarded. No monsters just the adults trying to keep the kids in the Village...um...yeah anyways. Paul Giomotti is great but Lady in the Water was the worst piece of crap....EVER. M. Night said it was a fairy tale...must of been a bed time story because I got pretty damn drousy. And then this turd comes floating by and it's called The Happening. OMG the extended video is horrible. Not only is Marky Mark horrible in it but whoever the girl is he's talking to is also horrible. Sorry M. Night...you said you hope I didn't get too scared by the preview...well I did because I haven't seen that bad of acting since...um....The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Obviously the problem cannot be Mark Wahlberg who has gotten a lot better since Fear (Departed and Four Brothers were both awesome movies). The problem is obviously this talentless hack known as M Night Shamaalayanalayn. He's about as talented as Michael Moore...I rest my case.
-
shyamadelusional
-
That this doesn't look NEARLY as bad as everyone keeps saying it does on this site. You guys need to give it a rest. This doesn't look THAT bad.
-
yeah..no prob.
-
That loves Clooney. I know he's seems pretentious and has an ego but every interview I read with the guy makes me think he's the coolest. Now there's a guy I want to have a beer with.<p>Clooney stars in some mega duds but he owned my ass in O, Brother, Out of Sight, Syriana and Michael Clayton.<p>And with that I'll cease the homo-erotic underpinnings of my post.
-
Yeah I don't like George either. But he seems to have access to do whatever he wants. I guess I am hoping after the flopping of Whatever that lame ass looking movie was he directed. He'll realize that he needs to be smarter not cockier. I KNOW its a long LONG shot. He needs to come off his high horse, do something that totally mocks himself and his attitude and brings him down a few notches and maybe move on from there. Shit it wouldn't hurt George to give Spike a call, instead of investing all his time and effort into that once interesting Steven Soderbergh, who needs to go back to low budget.
-
or more accurately..bad directing of actors. everything seems so flat and amaturish. lame hammy score too.
-
Thanks for reminding me about Four Brothers. What a great, underrated movie. Wahlberg was great, but then so was the rest of the cast. Even Andre Outkast, who then turns around and gives the WORST. PERFORMANCE. EVER in Revolver.
-
cause if Wahlberg fucks up The Lovely Bones, which from the rest of the cast seems to have a lot of potential, it'd be just unfair. In the book his character screams Oscarbait, so maybe PJ can help get his shit in order.
-
I'm too used to all the anti-hype before a Shyamalan movie to watch isolated evidence of suckiness. It happens everytime and then I end up loving the movie. I'll wait.
-
For the love of god. Maybe the bare-footed one will give him a slap and tell him to ACT!!!
-
are you geeks genuine movie buffs or trash tabloid subscribers? <p> you want to tear apart m.night's films... fine, his last few did suck. but what's his arrogance gotta to do wtih anything? judge the works you see on the screens, his personal life should not be of concern. studios send actors/directors all over talk shows to talk about their personal lives when all they want is to plug movies. but we know better, right? we are enlightened movie buffs, RIGHT? "oh oh that tom cruise is cookoo, let's stay away from his movies!" <p> i guess not.
-
.. at least Zooey is still hot
-
We DROOOOOOOWWWWNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!
-
Nothing blew me away there but it's just a teaser clip. M.Night's obviously going for a different vibe with this one--retro 50's paranoia. I would expect the dialogue and acting style to be a little different. Check out "The Day the Earth Stood Still" or "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"--there's "wooden" (what does that even mean?) performances in those too.
-
when the screwvala family is involved.
-
Could be interesting.
-
....and at least "my" comment is in context!!!
-
But he didn't help much either.
-
fuck him! i hate that pretentious bastard. out of sight, o brother where art thou, three kings, good night and good luck, siriana... dont care dont care dont care. his ego is too huge it's blocking my eyes from seeing his works.
-
Night telling us how we're going to feel if we watch this? Wow. Hitchcock kind of pulled off that sort of promotion because he had a sense of humor; M. just seems sort of delusional. Pass.
-
But I honestly don't think he's that bad. He was AWESOME in The Departed. He was very good in Three Kings. He was very good in Boogie Nights. And he even wasn't that bad - OK, fine, I'll say he was good - in Invincible, which would actually be an OK film if the scene where he and his friends play two-hand touch in the rain had been cut. So he manages to rise to the level of his director and of the script - which is pretty much all you can ask an actor to do.
-
I hated Lady In The Water. But Unbreakable is a masterpiece. The Village wasn't good at all (though it had a strong ending that it didn't earn). Signs was quite good except for the alien effect at the end which was awful. Not a fan of Sixth Sense because it relies too heavily on its ending/twist. Having read the premise for The Happening in more detail I am intrigued. Will definitely see it. It might be dissapointing when all is said and done but I resect M. Night's trying to keep consistent and making suspense films. And Mark Wahlberg is a terrific actor. And it looks like he is giving an interesting performance in this film. It looks like a combination of childhood innocence and vulnerablility. I buy it and it looks very different from a lot of the other performances he's given.
-
Uhm... that was not even remotely as outlandish as the reviewer and Merrick are making it out to be. Just looked like a standard Wahlberg performance to me complete with "are you okay?" line which he seems to say in almost every movie he's in for some reason.
-
they were trying to get their money back... not for paying to see the money, but for time wasted as a free screening. i didn't think marky was so bad... but zooey, holy shit.
-
Maybe Jackson regrets letting Ryan Gosling go...
-
Shatner starred in several Twilight Zones. Those were scary.<br> I love the angry/befuddled eyebrows in the clip.
-
Lovely Bones will be Peter Jackson's Hollywood version of Heavenly Creatures. And considering that HC is still one of the best films of the last 20 years in my opinion that means Bones will probably turn out pretty damn good. I think Wahlberg will turn out great in the film. I'm sure Gosling would have been good too. But when Wahlberg is good he is TRULY good.
-
the ending of the The Myst movie.<br> Then threaten everyone who talks about it.
-
I have NEVER said a negative word about Night, not even after LITW -- but when he consciously decides to make himself the star of this extended clip, then proceeds to compare this to three of the greatest movies of ALL TIME, then proceeds to instruct me on how I should react to the clip, I can't help but feel disgust -- just from one human being to another.<br><br>I am making no judgments on the film until I (have not paid to) see it.
-
This might sound like a weird question, but are you (or were you) a Hillary Clinton supporter? I'll explain why I ask later.
-
Walberg will always be that white rappin', Calvin Klein underwear model, trying to front with a wannabe street cred that he couldn't get, so he changed his rep and got into movies instead. His best role will always be Dirk Diggler from Boogie Nights, because essentially, he plays himself: a dim-witted, dish-washing, buffed mall kid who gets to bone Julianne Moore and Heather Graham with that big prosthetic dick of his! Seeing that clip was like reliving his “Eddie from Torrance” role again. Don't expect Oscar caliber performances because you're not going to be getting any...
-
But I'm not sure what's supposed to be so shockingly terrible about that performance. If I had watched that clip without seeing Merrick's attack first I would guess he was gonna go after the lady that talks to Wahlberg at the beginning. How is Leguizamo any better or worse than Wahlberg there? I guess you can't make another Funky Bunch joke with Leguizamo so you gotta go after Wahlberg.

Seriously, it wouldn't have mattered if the clip was the horror thriller equivalent of second coming, with a chorus of angles and celestial sunbeams shooting out of Marky Marks ass. After that hilarious self indulgent introduction I automatically hated this movie.

Other than M. Night yammering on for 2.5 minutes...
by TheGhostWhoLurks
This clip was different from the senseless trailer in what way???
-
This film will be suckier than even Signs.
-
Every single performance in that clip was *so* wooden.
-
...doing something original. I give him major credit for that. Mind you, I can't stand Marky Mark, but M. Night gets far more respect from me than say, that uber-hack Zombie. House of... was just a rehash of NotLD and TCM, Devil's Retards was okay, but didn't really go anywhere and the man is an absolute total hack for even attempting a "re-envisioning" of Halloween, a flick that is and always will be a classic in its current form. Thanks to M. Night for doing his own thing, even if we don't like it we should respect him trying...
-
Night is an original talent which is rare in Hollywood and his hits and misses are still better than most, it's his damn ego that makes me sick! Why cant he just make a film like Terrance Malick and just shut up??!!!
-
You've written another shitstorm, people watch it for no apparent reason (hence the supernatural angle), and then they feel like killing themselves because of it. The twist is that no one saw your movie, it was all a bad dream, and we all go see something actually WORTH our time and money. Better yet, bring Diablo Cody in on it as your co-writer.
-
Ummm... how the fuck can you say that Wahlberg is bad in this movie? From watching that clip it is plain as fucking day to see that the problem is some of the dialogue. Not even ALL of the diologue, but it seems like Wahlberg was given some really shit lines there. His delivery was about as good as it could have been. He is still a good actor, so fuck you all. I'm gonna see this movie either way. I'm a huge Shyamalan fan.
-
Why do you ask? Sorry but I got a feeling I'm being set up ...
-
Everyone in the clip is enunciating too properly, which is unnatural. This ain't Shakespeare. And that's the same problem with the Prequels. They spoke more naturally in the OT.

the fact they choose a really boring one to tease us with.
-
"the movie is about this couple ...and they get trapped in this area of this part of the united states..." what a great orator Shammylamy is! I think Hollywood should be renamed Shammytown in his honour. and all movies whatsoever should have a coda saying "also by M. night. shammy" or "inspired by the great night". or something similar. like copyright. shammyright.
-
...and a regular size blue raspberry slushie... Get used to hearing those words, M. Night, because that is what's going to happen after the "Happening" bombs...
-
this shit is also "original": http://tinyurl.com/25q575 I guarantee you it is scarier than this movie, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed watching it either. I'm sure M NIght believes the terrible wooden acting and artificial dialogue evident in this clip is some sort of artistic choice. He also seemed to think Lady in the Water was a misunderstood masterpiece as it bombed catastrophically. Remind me why this guy has a career, when thousands of other creative people with "original" ideas never get a shot?
-
He sort of has a right to be in some regards. His first few movies were some quality stuff. Also, I think the reason for his arrogant attitude probably stems from how his father treated him when he was growing up. According to what I've heard, his father always acted like nothing that M. Night did was ever good enough. I think he wanted M. Night to become a doctor like the rest of his family or something and when M. Night was on the cover of some popular magazine his dad was like "That's nice, but it's no TIME magazine." or some shit. This isn't any excuse to act like he's the best thing since sliced bread though. I am looking forward to seeing this movie and I will be there on the 1st day with my ticket, my popcorn, and my Pepsi.
-
Those things are fuckin boss.

The reason I ask is mostly for my own curiosity. I know you're liberal from what I've read from your posts, but even liberals are divided, and I want to test my own instincts to see if my intution for distinguishing Obama supporters from Clinton supporters is astute. I'm not gonna set you up, I like your posts and find them quite amusing.

How long can you hold your breath? .........I blame the vegetarians for this mess, if they didn't eat the plants they would have no reason to want to kill us all ... maybe if we play the plants some classical music they will calm down... maybe.
-
...don't watch the new red band clip posted online. Those of you who want to see the whole movie without wasting your money, you may fire when ready.
-
I'm a former Clinton supporter now backing Obama ... but after just watching The Secret Rulers of the World on Youtube (led to it by the 28th Amendment TB), I think I just want to be a hermit and let the world run its course to freaking oblivion ...

Tree pollen count is way high today.
-
is going to RULE!!!!
-
Wahlberg sucks as a actor, has always sucked as an actor and will always suck as an actor. He's certainly no Charlton Heston and I believe we can thank both him and Tim Burton for killing any chance of seeing more Apes films with Rick Baker's amazing work.
-
Dad, you are embarrassing us with your snide hateful articles. Please, stop before Harry fires you!
-
...I agree that "original" doesn't = good, which is essentially what I said, but I believe it is a far step higher up the ladder than all the "re-envisioning" of classic material. I do agree wholeheartedly that other "original" work needs to start coming down the pipe, some will be shite, some will be okay, one or two may be new classics. I'll put M. Night trying and failing well above "Haloween" "The Fog" "Assault on Precinct 13" "Friday the 13th" ALL of the Living Dead movies "I Am Legend" and all the other "ReEnvisionments" out there. I may not like it, but credit where credit is due, and he gets credit for not re-hashing someone else's work.
-
Was the critic. And M. Night kills him off, because he doesn't like the critic . . . who apparently dared to speak truth to M. Night. This movie looks Lady in the Water terrible, with worse performances. From everyone, not just Wahlberg.
-
He's relatively fine; it's just a God-awful script. MNS has no ear for natural-sounding dialogue, and his beats are way too telegraphed. I've said it before: MNS is a better director than he is a writer.
-
that was sucking? i kept waiting for the bad acting. that was fine. it's the "hate m. night" bandwagon, i'm left to assume, that's writing the headline up there. and i didn't like signs and completely skipped the mermaid one and the "crazy white people" one, so don't think i'm a rah rah guy. but that looked fine.
-
I thought we were supposed to be spewing out all this CO2. So ... why would the trees want to kill us off? Shouldn't they be thanking us?

M Night looks and talks like Elijah Wood wearing bronzer.
by Sepulchrave
True.
-
Good to see you coming over to my side. You can join me on the front lawn in a deck chair. I'll provide the cigar and booze, you bring the shotgun and we'll watch the world end around us.<p>Everyone is always talking about movie series that need a reboot. Humanity needs a reboot. Let's hit rock bottom and then start over.<p>That's why I always cheer for the comet or invading aliens in the movies.
-
Good point about trees and humans needing each other to exist. M. Night always goes for what he thinks are badass, scary premises such as "plants kill the humans," but he never does any biological research or base anything he does on remotely credible premises.<p> Oh well. I'm sure some people will dig "The Happening." Just not people who use their brains to think.

Night was crazy to cut the "Carousel Ride" scene in Unbreakable.
by cookylamoo
It was the best damn scene in the movie.
-
That girl from American Pie who keeps saying ''One time at band camp''<P>Frikin Hilarious! and I think Shamalang's biggest problem are his monologues to camera where he tells you the bedtime story or tells you this is really scary!?<P>Man I can make up my own mind about your new moviw when/if I go and see it which I now will because it looks so hilariously BAD it might just be the best comedy this summer.
-
so its dirk digler in his first mainstream role...and m knight is a hack...always was
-
Whoever wrote that original review is an idiot. It’s obvious Wahlberg and everyone else are playing it as regular everyday people. His acting is fine but is it just me or is M. Night Shyamalan the new William Castle? I’m actually interested in see this.

that's why i put gooogly eyes on them.

that joblo trailer makes it look really fucked up, super fucking violent.

Wahlberg hasn't had to prove himself since Boogie Night's
by HitchCock'n'Balz
Dirk Diggler. Nuff said. He owes no more to anyone
-
is Shia Lebouf! This generation's James Dean. I love him and I am not ashamed to admit it!
-
So I assume you won't be visiting that quaint museum in Alabama that shows humans and dinosaurs existing at the same time?
-
My love for Monsieur Lebouf will not be denied by some jerk impersonating me! And this movie looks like it could be as good as my favorite movie of all time-DISTURBIA!
-
Who ever sad that stinky acting ever ruined a disaster movie? That person is a fool. When catastrophe strikes, the first thing people lose is their thespian skills.
-
Did you not see THE FLINTSTONES?
-
I thought all of the acting had a kind of strange vibe. Not just Wahlberg. Maybe that's the point. Or maybe the director didn't given any of the actors any help. Also, I'm kinda pysched for an R-rated movie by the guy that directed UNBREAKABLE.
-

There's certain people who can carry of Night's dialogue.
by Christopher3
Yes: Willis, William Hurt, Toni Collette, Cherry Jones, Joaquin Phoenix. No: Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Haley Joel Osment, Bryce Dallas Howard, and the entire cast of Lady in the Water
-
It's the director. Simple as that: as Hitchcock said: 'Actors are like cattle'.
-
Dude, we could only hope they were kidding. They feel it's important to offer a different take, so yes, they have a the Geico guy and a raptor walking side by side.<p>Intelligent design. Is there anything it couldn't do?
-
And so naturally hollywood will not follow the story and basically make up their own less complex pg13 friendly version of it.. Yeah, I love the game but I don't have high hopes for the movie at all.
-
Someone once said that she delivered what was clearly meant to be a casual kiss-off line (the Toad death scene) as though she was Desdemona with a pillow coming at her.
-
I'm sure you're an asshole in real life too, not just on these talkbacks.<p> But it's cute seeing you throw around your theories. Keep it up.
-
Someone on AICN finally had the balls to speak up about Merricks assholery. Every fucking day Merrick posts some stupid bullshit, and we never hear anything from Harry or Mori or Quint, disputing said bullshit. You rock Vern. Harry, please for the love of god, get rid of Merrick. I'm not a "hater", but he is seriously dragging your site down.
-
You made me remember the Village. Agh! It's all coming flashing back! 'What be-eth your meaning Brother?'
-
scratching my head trying to understand WHY he was nominated for his role in The Departed! Talk about LUCKY! So many other actors worth a nomination and you gives it to someone playing a role that had NOTHING outstanding aside a full mouth. Ridiculous.
-
I'm two M. Night movies behind. Looks like I'll make it 3. Unbreakable was one of my favorites though; final text not withstanding.
-
And this movie's 200 minutes, probably. EVERYONE was bad in it, not just Marky Mark, so I don't know who to blame.
-
So, I'm confused. What exactly was so horrible about Wahlly's performance in this clip? I mean, sure, it wasn't the most dramatic acting turn I've ever seen, but jumping on the bandwagon based on 60 seconds of Marky Mark in an out-of-context clip is simply, well... unprofessional. Makes you look like quite the hack, my friend.
-
Why couldn't they cast Shia! You guys know he would have nailed it!
-
I mean, there always is, but this anti Night bandwagon is pretty irritating. I'm not saying the movie is going to be good. I'm saying that its pretty fucking stupid judging the entire movie base on a 2 minute, out of context clip. I'll see it, and hope for the best. The trailers look pretty sweet to me.
-
And does he ever respond to us in TBs?
-
Grow some balls and comment. Tell us why you think Wahlberg's performance is so fucking bad in this clip. Stand up for your opinions for christ sake. Your opinion is obviously the huge minority here, so justify it.
-
What the hell is wrong with M? He must have been writing something reeeeaaalllllyyyyyy shitty if he dropped it to make this movie. It looks like a brainless horror movie with a big budget. Way to blow the rest of your hollywood capital there, M.
-
After watching that doc I'm more opposed to organized religion than ever. Also the revelation that Yeshua studied Buddha in the Himalayas is fascinating. I'm on part 15 thereabouts. Youtube is the best thing since the wheel. As for DannyDickblood and his doppleganger ... ROFLMAO
-
that when M. Night was first coming up with the idea for this, that no one said to him, "well that's KINDA cool, but it would be better if the trees and plants gave off a neurotoxin that turned people into mindless, homocidal maniacs." I mean, from the plants' perspective - why make people kill just themselves, when we can make them kill ten or twenty people? Then again, maybe that would just turn into another Dawn of the Dead remake / 28 Days Later wannabe.
-
I don't really give a shit about this movie but the judgment seems a little harsh.
-
What the hell is this movie?! I won't see it, I mean if this is what most of the movie is going to be like.. Or if what they think the best parts are, enough to show them as an advertisement to get people interested in the movie.. Yeah, it's just terrible.
-
Seriously. WTF?
-
Out there promoting this movie himself? My god, he's comparing it the godfather, the birds, invasion of the body snatchers etc...MNight - THAT IS NOT YOUR JOB. Leave that to other people. Is he serious? Did I hear him say I hope you don't you don't get 'too scared' by this clip? Ugh. He is a shameless self promoter. Have you learned nothing?? Will you please dispense with the need to show off your face? Let the movie do the talking!! Jeezus. And please, Please tell me you're not in it. Please let me believe the studio didn't allow that. I really want this to be good, but based on this (and I am afraid most people out here are right) I can see Marky Mark is not giving his best performance.
-
With something like this. How can directors watch what they've shot, listen to it, hear how bland and wooden and boring and unnatural the dialogue and delivery is, and think it's good? It makes absolutely no sense. I bet the twist of this movie is that it's actually an average movie, instead of a terrible movie like this preview leads me to believe.
-
how truly ugly I am.
-
Dude, you just keep getting better and better in my eyes. Organized religion is something I can rant about for days.
-
And introduces the clip for TWO MINUTES. Well, that's another 10 bucks saved.
-
That would be DISTURBIA. I was trembling the entire time. I was so worried that Shia was going to get killed. The end of that movie was a huge relief and I can't wait for the sequel.
-
The irony is... this Talkback is like a bizzare version of "The Happening" on cyberspace. <br> <br> Merrick, you should be ashamed of yourself for that ridiculous headline. Had you not read that ONE review, would your reaction to that clip have been "WOW". <br> <br> Allow me to me retort...<br> "Wow...Wahlberg Really Does Suck In THE HAPPENING!!" <br> <br> You've made up your mind that he SUCKS in the whole movie, because of one clip? You are one of the chief writers for this site, how could you be so easily influenced?
-
Danny makes an excellent point. However, the one thing I will say is that a director looking at a dailies (or with digital cameras reviewing right on the spot), should look at a take and say to themselves, "Good Lord that was bad" and ask the actor to do it again.<p>I still have wrinkles in my face from cringing during Sam Jackson's delivery in Ep III when greeting Anakin and Obi-Wan as they arrived at the palace after crashing landing the ship. It was beyond dreadful and should never have been the final take.
-

If I would have been a runner on "There Will Be Blood"
by William Landis
and Daniel Day-Lewis would have and he would have said "fetch me a coffee, boooooooooooy" while channelling Daniel Plainview, I would have had to say "GROW UP YOU SILLY LITTLE MAN! YOU ARE AN ACTOR! YOU ARE NOT A 19TH CENTURY OIL PROSPECTOR! YEAH SURE, YOU LOOK, SOUND AND ACT LIKE DANIEL PLAINVIEW BUT YOU ARE NOT HIM! AND RECYCLING YOUR "GANGS OF NEW YORK" SCHTICK DOES NOT AN OSCAR WIN MAKE! VIGGO WILL BE ROBBED!"
-
We know that directors can make good actors bad (Star Wars prequels, anyone?). Yet you personally attack Whalberg for this fiasco... in a headline of all things? You're a piece of shit, Merrick.
-
I love how you can't edit posts on this site.
-
I though I was the only person in the world that thought Z.D. acts like she is a marionette. Her performance in HHTG was only passible at best, and her role in The Wizard of Oz series was sooooo bad it was painful. She does something disarming, I'll grant people that. She's hot and yet still feels approachable, but all that does is explain how studio execs get fooled into casting her, not how she continues to grow in popularity.
-
There will be cowards.
-
You complete me.
-
It's not the actor. It's M Night's 'talent' as a director. Always was. He has sucked more than a black hole since his first crapfest The Sixth Sense. (and anyone who was surprised at that ending seriously needs to just kill themselves and save the world from their utter lack of intelligence) Don't hate the messenger when the crap he's delivering was handed to him by the person who wrote it!
-
Guys, he's "great" in THE DEPARTED because HE'S NOT ACTING! He's playing an Irish mook for Dorchester, Mass.--which is exactly what he is! Would you be blown away by Keanu playing a airhead California surfer? Isn't it basically the same thing?
-
The plants toxin makes their victims feel so SO guilty for their bad human ways, that the only response is suicide (in the messiest way possible).<p>Oh, and this will fail, not as bad as Lady, but if the review is any indication, word of mouth will kill this after the first weekend. And therefore killing any chance of King's Cell being adapted (except for made-for-cable maybe...TNT?).
-
I agree with you about the title. It doesn't belong there. Comes across like he has a grudge against him.
-
Dude! Buddy! It's a M. Night Talkback!
-
BSB is referring to The Secret Rulers of the World on Youtube.
-
We should each write a review of TDK... one ridiculously negative and one ridiculously positive. I'm sure AICN will post them. They post anything here.
-
The doc is called Secret Rulers of the World, in 29 parts of ten minute clips each. Someone in another talkback mentioned it and I checked it out. I'm freaking enthralled. Be patient with it, it's got some fascinating twists that put Shymalamahooha's to shame. Origins of Great Britain, etc.
-
'Splain.
-
Don't worry Dickblood, it's easy to tell you from the imposter (The imposter is Merrick by the way). Fuck you, dad!

WHAT!? That wasn't bad. Is that review hater BULLSHIT?
by MurderMostFowl
I am starting to not believe that review... I am definitely not a M.N.S hater.I too felt like the village end sucked, though I must also confess I actually wasn't a big fan of unbreakable.. it was good, but I just don't see it as the high art everyone else does. So i think I'm pretty even handed when it comes to Shamalamama. There is NOTHING bad about Marky mark in that trailer. I think it fits entirely with the mood. One thing that starts me wondering about that review... he says people just stand around and don't make phone calls and don't react. People got the fuck outta dodge but there's no credible news or any reason to panic, so people have nothing to do but talk. No reason to panic... people just talking. Especially if in this scene we have people leaving some area, but since they don't know what the threat really is, there's nothing to do but talk. There was a fire in my building at work recently, and it played out very similarly to this.... alot of commotion at the beginning, alot of nervous talk, the official evacuation, then when we're outside it was this moment of silence after we were all outside and a wall of chatter starts up. Cellphones fly out and its talk talk talk until they let us into the building. That's pretty much what I just saw in that footage. This movie may end up sucking, but I haven't seen anything in it so far that shows that for me.
-
I recognize your handle. However, we deserve an explanation from that other doofus.
-
BSB and I are handing out tin foil hats in the back. Come see us after the show.<p>Those Loose Change guys are nuts though. To call them fringe is an understatement.
-
Remember the 'dryl. Benedryl.
-
How much more can she suck? The delivery in that scene was fucking horrible, ive seen better delivery from a one legged UPS Man driving a truck with 3 flats and a busted axle. Plus that album she just came out with is total crap. Makes me want to take one after listening to it.
-
I'll be watching it in the theatre.
-
is hilarious eco-torture porn. A laughable premise and a movie made for population reduction enviros to jerk off to.
-
When I saw the trailer in Iron Man...I could only say CRAP... He is great, but this movie will hit a NEW LOW...
-
...with everyone.
-
to write a headline. And he comes up with that?? How old is he, 12?
-
I did not know that. I guess he is the greatest actor of his generation then. And a bad example to use. But my original point still holds: Walberg playing a goon cop from Dorchester is no big stretch for him.
-

Fuckin' A, I was really hoping this was a return to form...
by Crimson King
I think M. Night, despite all his faults, is an incredibly talented filmmaker, and I was really hoping this movie would kick ass. I'm hoping this person is wrong, dead wrong, but the dialogue does feel pretty awkward just from this scene alone. I'm hoping it maybe works a lot better in context....I dunno, but now I'm scared. Scared that this is gonna suck, 'cause I figured a Night movie where people are offing themselves could do no wrong.
-
...he said they should be TREATED like cattle. And that documentary is something else.
-
It it is gory as FUCK. Night should have done a R-rated flick before. Signs would've been pretty cool with some more violence like this. Yuck. Oh, and Merrick, screw off and let us make up our own minds already. Jesus.
-
If this movie does end up being terrible, then the guys that made the red band trailer deserve a huge raise. Because it makes the movie look really fucking good.
-
Because they didn't get the redband trailer exclusive. Fuck you, and fuck your "pwesents" you tools.
-
Personally I dig Merrick's reviews, even if I don't always agree with him. He's honest and he writes well. I actually think he's one of the best things on AICN.<p> I'm also thankful he warned us about M. Night's newest.
-
But Merrick still sucks.
-
First being the no-edit button. Merrick you aren't the worst thing, but today... <br> <br> You're a fucking idiot!
-
the movie itself looks like shit but Marky Mark acted as usual. He always has that retarded look on his face.
-
How's that?
-
If I had an edit button, I would take back the "J/K Cobbio," because I didn't know about your retarded "theory." You're a fucking moron. Go back to school.
-
I don't think of Wahlberg as a De Niro necessarily, but I didn't see anything in his acting that deserved that harsh a condemnation.
-
Like a gang would.
-
Must be a hardcore bible-thumper who thinks the world is only 5000 years old.
-
and they will stop. This is a business, and the people who post once or twice aren't making Merrick's career, BringSexyBack, MattmanReturns, Dickblood and all the others that post on his contrived prophecies of late are contributing to his celebrity. Ignore him and he'll not be popular, band together!
-
its the plants of the earth that are causing the people to go crazy in this movie, some kind of air born gas given off by the tress and grass and everything else that is growing, i bet 100% His twist is gonna suck again
-
His opinions are sound and his reviews are spot on! He's no Shia, but still fuckable!
-
and you all deserve TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION.
-
I meant "fuck" in the allusion sense of the word. Here is an example, "Fuck Merrick, in his bunghole." It is not my point to literally tell a gang of TBers to commit sodomy, but to fuck him verbally, together!
-
Goddamn man, do you bitch about everything and everyone? Pessimism. Look it up.
-
Reminds me a bit of his turn as Dirk Diggler. Wide-eyed, naive, a little slow...that's the Wahlberg I love!
-
I didn't see anything in the clip to cause such distress. And I actually liked the trailer. Which is more than I can say for the X-Files teaser. Being a huge X-files fan...the teaser is underwhelming. But back to Marky. Give this a chance...and get off his back. It's not that bad. He can still act circles around any one of us.
-
as much as i fully expect this movie to be a terrible disappointment, i just watched the trailer and saw NOTHING to suggest that Wahlberg sucks in this film. So now I'm asking myself: Is it possible that Merrick and the rest of these cronies are actually capable of mounting a vendetta against certain filmmakers by abusing their position as writers for this site? </P> <P> I think the evidence has been here for ages.... It's no secret that Harry has become a lapdog for certain producers and that he raves enthusiastically about movies that later turn out to be total shit, but made by someone he is 'friends' with. </P> <P> Now, I personally have no love for Shyamalan's last few movies, at all. I only liked "Sixth Sense" and "Signs" and the rest was "meh"... But I have to say I'm getting a bit suspicious about the pre-release hate campaign that has appeared on here, amongst the staff writers, no less. </P> <P> Come on guys, do you really think that AICN will last forever? Soon enough there will be some other trendy movie news site that will win favour over this one, and then you lot will no longer be able to command the position you are currently in, where you are apparently having a significant effect on a new film's success by either trashing it or hyping it depending on whether the director is an online 'buddy' for Harry or not.
-
Seemed pretty standard to me. And if he's shirtless at least once in the movie, I'll see it.
-
if you think he's full of shit
-

Wow, her acting is terrible too. Awesome line delivery...[rolls
by Pixelsmack
This has highschool drama 101 acting all over it. I know M. Night Chamalamatron was an ego maniac but that opening doesn't do him ANY good. I know he's trying to 'channel' Hitchcock in how he did those openings to his films/shows but, EPIC FAIL.
-
Get it?
-
He was good in BOOGIE NIGHTS, THREE KINGS and I HEART HUCKABEES. But that lame "listen to me yell in every scene" performance in THE DEPARTED did not deserve a nomination.
-
Because if he doesn't, there is no hope for the man. He needs to get away from the pseudo-Twilight Zone episodes as Movies formula, and away from the depressed man sleepwalking through life until something fantastic awakens him angle he's played in just about all of his movies. If he doesn't find his inner Peter Jackson, I think he's lost to us. I don't worry too much about Avatar as a franchise though since the TV series is so fucking good on its own.
-
Two, the redband has a ***spoiler***! Showing Leguizamo slicing himself. Stay away!
-
"I'm going to ask you one more time... What the fuck happened to Rico???"

Also, Zooey Deschanel was the worst offender in that clip.
by Flim Springfield
Very bad line reading.
-
She's just a fucking "look at me, I'm so quirky" Ally-Sheedy-from-BREAKFAST-CLUB wannabe. At least she's not as unattractive as her sister, who has a predatory, JURASSIC PARK T-rex kind of face. **** Anyway, the only way this movie can realistically end is everybody on Earth dying. Even if some people retreat to the deserts, they won't surivive in that environment without some link to the civilized world, which won't exist anymore (even Bedouins buy and trade goods and supplies). Man can never, ever fight Nature and win.
-
I guess you can judge when YOU get a academy award nomination.
-
That part was just BAD. I didn't believe for a second he was out of breath and anxious for her safety. Worst 2 seconds of acting of the year, BY FAR. Although, that part where he asks the lady on the train, "Another park?"... yikes, my friends... yikes.
-
knack for being unspectacular. Remember, THE DEPARTED was the execption, NOT the rule. No one should be surprised if this looks wack, especially coming from such an overrated director who needs to stop writing his own scripts and hire someone with actual talent. Other than that, he's still fuckin hot to look at, and for that, lots of us will probably end up seeing this no matter how much we want to hate it.
-
I remember reading that he was "cast" on this site to be the voice of dissent -- the bad guy, basically. Harry's idea. Most of the time, though, he just seems uninterested and underinformed.
-
I see lots of dead people. Why? M. Night doesn't know, but it sure looks scary, huh? Not what I want to see, mass deaths for no reason. But wait, he has a reason and it's likely just as full-of-crap as the reasons for things in his films for the past decade. Sixth Sense was mildly interesting; Unbreakable was for people who don't like super-hero concepts at all. And the rest....garbage. Won't waste my money on this one, not even as a Netflix rental. And monotone Zoey and a sleepwalking Wahlberg. Looks terrible. Ugh and double Ugh. Who needs this? Not me. Goodnight M and good luck.
-
LAME, everyone is acting terrible, it just looks like it was cut with a meat cleaver... but I've always thought M. Might's movies were overratted buckets of bum cum. The only thing worse is Merrick's shitty writing.
-
...and Merrick comes off as nothing more than a pissant trying to make a name for himself with snide comments. Wahlberg was no better or worse than he's been in a ton of his other films. He's never been uber-dynamic. How was he worse than Zooey, Merrick? You saw one line for her. Why not beat her up too?
-
That is a lot of fucking blood for a big budget Hollywood horror movie. Jesus...
-
Shyamalan: Just look stupefied and surprised every time you speak. Walberg: How was that? Shyamalan: No, Idiot. You're dumb, stupid, and confused... Let me make this clear, no matter how much crazy stuff "happens", you are always surprised by the newest "happening" in the movie "The Happening" Walberg: How was that? Shyamalan: Nailed it!
-
The idea of this movie looks stupid. The acting, what little I've seen of it, looks bad. Seems to me, he's just calling it as he sees it. DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD ... M Night, is that you? lol
-
Merrick's insecurity would be hilarious if he wasn't so depressingly pathetic! Same goes to those just happy to have another movie to tear apart based on a singular review of an unfinished movie.<P>BTW - The exclusive red band trailer on joblo.com shows just how bad-ass this movie is...
-
James Newton Howard's score for Lady in the Water was spectacular. Here's hoping he can throw down an even better score for an even worse movie.
-
I think that sequence was edited , I dont think itll feel the same way once you see the finished film. Wahlberg doesnt seem any different to me than any of his other performances..Hes just always been a decent actor. A little exagerrated in saying this is a most awful performance, watch any movie of the week on sci fi and youll see how bad shitty acting can get.
-
if when the humans are killing themselves the nearby plants are trying not to laugh.
-
Everybody on this site is exaggerating about Wahlberg's performance, it isn't THAT BAD. It's Mark Wahlberg, what the fuck do you guys expect? DDL? Besides this is like a blockbuster B-movie, those are always fun, besides give the movie a chance, it hasn't even come out yet. You guys take the wrong movies wayyyyy too serious. Have some fun, bring a date, eat some popcorn and shit.
-
To add to that, I cannot for the life of me understand why folks want Night to fail so badly. The fans have made it very hard for him to grow as a filmmaker because they continue to ask of him to do his "reveal" like a showpony. Just lower your goddamned expectations, and maybe you'll like the fucking flick freaks. Wahlberg was fine in that clip. So night's got a little ego, and Spielberg doesn't? Hitchcock didn't? Hitch went through pretty great lengths to figure out how to put himself in his own movies. You're all just pissed because he never made that sequel to Unbreakable.
-
Based on these comments I'm scared to watch that trailer. Yes, I am a pussy.
-
don't let your supposedly "internet movie critic" credentials get the best of you. Don't believe your own hype dude, don't be a fricking TROLL about a movie you haven't even seen.
-
Wasn't great. But it was mostly the dialogue that was poor. The woman at the start was very wooden. I don't get it. M Night is a good director. The premise is really interesting so I don't buy it that the film must suck because ONE person saw a rough cut and hated it.
-
wasn't great, but neither was the dialog either. Everyone in the clip was pretty wooden so without the rest of the movie putting it in context, maybe everyone should reserve judgement... I'm getting a bad taste about the almost unstopable push to MAKE this movie suck rather than just reacting to it one way or another... I'm starting to think there's some political bullshit going on here. I hope AICN doesn't go down that road.. I think we should hear from Harry or Mori on this one but I agree with what Vern and a bunch of you said above...
-
...He doesn't come off THAT bad. More like the film itself is sort of cheesy and overwrought, but that's not Wahlberg's fault, it's M. Night's. You wanna talk bad acting, how about that Zooey D in that clip? Boy, is she a looker, but the poor thing CANNOT ACT. Being "indie" and "quirky" only gets you so many free passes....
-
Read a few comments before you post. 95% of us agree that the acting isn't that bad.
-
Oh wait!!! They are the same person!!! Seriously, Zooey Deschanel sucks in this clip too. Its the writing... and probably the direction they are given. Even the greatest actor in the world is helpless to a mediocre script, and when you add bad direction in the mix it pretty hopless... what sucks is that the actors are the ones everyone notices first so they take the blame. Don't believe me? Just watch Lady in the Water.
-
FEEL THE VIBRATION!!! CMON, CMON!!!! FEEL IT, FEEL IT!!!!
-
If they like this movie.
-
i really liked The Happening script but knew from the start that Wahlberg was all wrong for the lead role. Adrien Brody would've put this movie on his shoulders and carried it to classicdom. As great as Wahlberg has been in Boogie Nights and to a lesser extent in The Departed, I've always felt he's been a fairly one-dimensional actor. Italian Job, Shooter were both awful. I just think M. Night's stories demand a lot from their actors and I didn't feel Wahlberg would be up to the task and it sounds like he isn't. Wahlberg as a teacher is a little tough to buy. <p> And Tom Bodet, not sure where the hell that came from but it's good to have you back, buddy.
-
i will reserve judgment on the film and wahlberg's performance until I see them. i still have a lot of faith in M. Night, even after the atrocious Lady in the Water. I've read The Man Who Heard Voices and I agree with himself that he is a genius. In a recent summer movie preview I wrote that The Happening is the Best Bet for Thrillers this summer so I'm not down on the project. I just think the marketing is letting the project down, just like DreamWorks did with The Ruins. There is no twist in The Happening but it's being marketing as if it has one. It's a misleading ad campaign and I feel like if they were more up front about the actual plot more people would be interested. People want to know what they're paying for and Night has lost the benefit of the doubt from most people after LITW.
-
useless comment, I don't anyone is gonna get it. check back after movie has had its run.
-
is jon leguizamo gonna be used as post it notes?? that would be awesome!! if thats the case, M Night's got my eleven bucks!

... all you shit heads who whine about how you think a movie is gonna suck BEFORE YOU SEE IT can suck it. All a movie is, no matter what the fuck movie it is, from The God Father to Howard The Duck, is an escape from your damn life for two hours (give or take). If a movie looks good to you, go fuckin' see it. If it looks like it'll suck to you, DON'T go fuckin' see it. But when you shit on a director or an actor or a freakin' special effects company because a movie TRAILER looks bad to you.... shove it up your ass and shut the hell up about it!!!! Damn! I wish it didn't bother me this much, but DAMN, fags and geeks whining about a former white rapper turned actor and his lack of acting skills (in your opinion) just gets under my skin for some reason. Now go ahead and rip me a new one for complaining about all your complaining. The first geek to tell me I'm a loser for complaining wins a reach around from his own gay boyfriend. FYI: My comments here would suggest I've got issues, but I'm 100% normal.
-
Sometimes my huffing gets out of control and I post a comment before I lose my buzz. The guy in my head was pissed, but he feels better now.
-
What happened to your black box? If no one is using it can I have it? <p> As for Adrien Brody being the lead instead of Wahlberg ... are you out of your mind?! Brody has been teh suckitude in everything he's appeared in. I'd much rather have Mark, who you can tell gives every thing he's got to every role. Too bad some directors can't take advantage.
-
I think Mark has built up enough goodwill to weather this. And I like M. Night, but much like "Lady in the Water" and "The Village," I think much/most of the blame will be given to M. Night. Even in that scathing review, Mark is called out for his performance, but in the end, the rationale is that maybe it's the material. We all know what Mark can do.
-
I liked him a lot in The Departed, but other than that - he's been average at best in just about everything he's done. My theory? He's just too damn short to make a compelling hero, I'm always waiting for the bad guys to hold him off at arms length (with a hand on his head) as he tries to swing his arms at them.
-
You're all judging an acting performance based on a two minute excerpt of an unfinished movie. Next, you'll be trashing movies simply because a director you don't like is making it. . . Oh yeah. You already do that.
-
To laugh
-
Everyone, in the universal sense, has been declaring this movie be absolutely terrible. I think most of the hyper-negative reactions about "two minute excerpt," is how nothing seen so far has given any reason, what-so-ever, to doubt this flick will be god-awful.
-
M. Night to pull a zipper from the crown of his head and reveal that it was actually Eli Roth that was trying to convince us with more movie name dropping than you can shake a dead ferret at that this movie will kick our asses. Man, it's like he's TRYING to make it impossible to defend him. And I LIKED The Village. Sigh...
-
The scene's a far cry from screaming Oscar, but bringing up The Funky Bunch? "Bad form Peter. Bad form." There's a strange awkwardness to the performance that I can see a method too if executed with the right suspense. The problem is the intro with Night just throws everything off. It screams, THIS FILM WILL SUCK, so you look for the suck. Really though, there is a certain very cliché way of reading these kind of lines, which they seem to be very intentionally avoiding. It MIGHT work, M. Night needs to not talk about how great his film is, otherwise I won't even rent it.
-
What are talking about? Hes not THAT BAD. Cut the guy some slack, Ive seen many others who are far worse.
-
The problems I saw were with language. The words coming out of his mouth didn't really fit with his persona. He's saying words like "gentlemen". Really?
-
Some of those shots were pretty stale too. Gentlemen.
-
Damn you to hell!
-
Look, feel free to defend the Walberg performance, but really, everyone who loves movies as much as the group who hangs out here does, has learned to recognize when a flick is going to suck balls from watching the trailer. And though I appreciate MNight shamalamadingdong's earnestness, this one looks stinky.
-
should be in my mouth.
-
should be in my mouth.
-
No. Really. Plant.
-
Night needs to stop making movies, and start making films...that don't rely on twists, overly shitty, attempted authorative characters like SGT. TRAINMAN just to force his heavy handed half-witted drama to the audience. Somebody needs to spoil the movie now. Who's read the script? What is "the happening?" It's fucking water, isn't it? Good ol' h20, back again, only this time, it's Chocolate, and Tay Zonday will come a'ridin' in on his twist-horse to save the day.
-
I hate when this site is reduced to an opportunity to crap on a movie or actor or director. It doesn't even matter who you take a dump on as long as you get to take a dump on something... You people enjoy that process WAY too much. This is a great site for news and whatnot but you guys are absolute vultures.
-
BAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW!!!
-
This movie looks and sounds like a Family Guy parody of itself!
-
Zooey is no worse than any of the other actors in any scene of that trailer.
-
I guess M. Night is attempting to singlehandedly bring back the word "whom" in normal conversation. Anyhowm, here's another clip in a later scene in this movie http://tinyurl.com/6mj9pn
-
he's doing it in the style of hitchcock and is trying to get the same acting style out of his characters.. they are all acting in the same style (which unfortunately seems bad)
-

-
It can't be worse than Lady in the Water.. can it?
-
...the worst was Harry's shameless shilling of HD-DVD and proclamations that "backwards compatibility just feels right". Ugh. That whole escapade changed the way I look at this site.
-
meh...i'll still go see it
-
It's a teaser for heaven's sake. Give the guy a change. Night's latest movies have been trainwrecks, but why not withold judgement at least until we see the real thing. There was hardly enough Walberg lines in this clip to make any honest judgement. Otherwise Night (and Walberg) just become the guy(s) we all love to hate.
-
its very good, scary, and creepy. Dont give too much creedence to a false review
-
the preview I saw didn't look that bad. I'd rather wait and see. Early criticism is expected, but I really don't think you're seeing the full scope of this character, and there's no way it could be worse than Rock Star.
-
This is what happens when you use huge exaggerations and hyperbola in your articles; The readers start to realise that you don't respect their own intelligence or their opinions.
-
Well, I've read the "twist," and I don't care how well made/acted/etc. it is (I threw "acting" in there just to not upset the Marky Mark TBers), the entire premise of the film is ridiculously stupid and lame. There's nothing chasing the characters other than the wind... and Trey and Matt did this same premise (orders of magnitude more enjoyably) with Two Days Before The Day After Tomorrow.
-
True story. He is a phenomenal director, and everything he has done (minus the villiage, that sucked) is incredible and has its merits.
-

LOL, what a fucking egotist! I know what the twist is...
by IAmJack'sUserID
Turns out Shama's huge ego manifested itself as a destructive force and started killing everyone. Yeah, I am sure the acting is INTENTIONALLY bad. Yeah, ok, I guess that makes it ok.
-
I really like Shyamalan's deliberate style (I have not yet seen Lady in the Water, mind you). I loved Sixth Sense, liked Unbreakable quite a bit... but lord... he truly is an uncontrollable egomaniac. It's never good when someone tells you how you're supposed to feel about a movie. If the movie can do right it's not necessary to tell people about it. And what a bad clip... Walbergh as hokey as his origins are is not a bad actor... clearly Shyamalan veered him into campland. I hope Shyamalan can get back on track... but if the failure of Lady and the Water didn't beat some humility into him he may be lost for good.
-
if that was directed at my posting, try to name a good M. Night film besides 6th or Unbreakable, then try to name how many years ago they were, in relation to how long he's been making movies, and with regards to how many movies he's made since.
-
you might have just been sarcastic, and I didn't notice
-
At least he's trying.... most people in Hollywood never try to break the rules. Hey check out this great new blog on blogspot. it's from a disgruntled network producer. it's hilarious! find it at: thebitterproducer on blogspot.
-
He's not that bad... There is one moment when he's talking to the train guy at the end that's a bit stiff, but it's the whole clip that's just not scary. WTF is M. Night talking about at the end of his intro when he says I hope it's not too scary for you or whatever? This is the most not scary thing I've ever seen! It's not even unnerving. *sigh* Don't think I'm seeing this one. Signs was the last one I enjoyed and that was just OK for me compared to Unbreakable and Sixth Sense...
-
Horrible dialog. Being from the area, I can tell you that nobody would every construct that statement in that way. As for Wahlberg, I"m sorry, Vern, but that scene with the train conductors was badalicious. Granted, the dialog was really weak too, but his show of confusion and frustration wasn't very good.... at all.
-
I love zooey but man she was pretty wooden here. So were the other actors. I agree with whoever said the dialogue is really bad.
-
It still looks good to me and I will see it. All of you M. Night bashers need to move on. The joke's getting old.
-
The few remaining fans of M. Night seem to think the rest of us are on some sort of cool hate "bandwagon." GW Bush fans think the same thing about the majority of smart people. M.Night is terrible. Signs is the first movie I've ever gotten actually angry at while watching. I'm sure he speaks profoundly to 13-year-old narcissists, but for the rest of us, he's a joke.
-
Just to piss off you pathetic bunch of sheeple. The hatred posted in the AICN talkbacks is very disturbing, but I guess being sheeple you have to follow the talkbacker in front of you with your nose up their arse.
-
We shall see. I happen to think Signs rocks too, so nur nur nur nur nurrrrrr
-
It looks decent. Wahlberg only had like 7 lines in the clip and they're all the same vibe as those "What the hell's going on here?" "What do you mean?" lines in disaster flicks that are meant to explain (or in this case NOT explain) the fiasco to the audience. He can typically carry a movie or at least make a part memorable. Blame Shyamalan's direction. All I saw in that intro was ego. With every box office failure he thinks people don't get it so he makes the next one ignoring criticism and making the same mistakes. There won't be a twist as indicated a loooong time ago. But I really want to see this it looks very eerie.
-
She's my favorite actress but you can tell when she's deigned to take on a role. She just phones it in. She was great in Winter Passing (which for the most part sucked indie balls), Mumford, I even loved her in that little bit in Almost Famous. When stars that you don't see too often (see Billy Crudup) take on roles in bigger movies they don't respect in the first place you can tell immediately.
-
I didn't like. He even saved Planet of the Apes, in my opinion. And Shooter is ridiculously underrated. If this movie is bad, it won't be because of him.
-
when 'hitchcock' and 'shyamalan' are used in the same context. when's the last time anybody who recently watched a shyamalan movie also recently watched a hitchcock film? there is no comparison, on any level, whatsoever. none. zero.<p>i kinda liked shooter too! but maybe that's because big guns turn me on. yeah, i'm a dirty girl.
-
Ahem** - That video was actually censored by MTV when it was released. He was ne seriously hot ticket, this boy, back in the very early 90's. I am quite impressed with his film track record so far, though.

Groupthink is a type of thought exhibited by group members who try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas. During groupthink, members of the group avoid promoting viewpoints outside the comfort zone of consensus thinking. A variety of motives for this may exist such as a desire to avoid being seen as foolish, or a desire to avoid embarrassing or angering other members of the group. Groupthink may cause groups to make hasty, irrational decisions, where individual doubts are set aside, for fear of upsetting the group’s balance. The term is frequently used pejoratively, with hindsight.
-
I'm accusing many of the posters here of groupthink.
-
I think the film looks great and this clip just makes me want to see it more.
-
I don't see how anyone could say that was that bad....deschanel and lequizamo (or however its spelt) seemed far worse then wahlberg there.
-
Aliens are sending singnals through t.v.s and radios for people to kill themself Right?
-
I used to love to hear his commentary on scenes and deleted scenes. "Here's a clip that I was reluctant to remove.....but it works out for the pace of the movie" Or something like that!!!!! How many time do we have to hear a line like that out of his mouth....?????? I sure hope the ending of this film adds up,,, I hope the ending is better than "The Lady in the Water" or "the Village".;.. Please tell me he doesn't have a cameo in this one!!!!!!
-
But terrible acting? Thought he was fine in the clip, and like a lot of posters, I think if he is terrible it's down to Night, not him. Something about that scene seemed horribly off to me, and it's in the edit.
-
His movies suck. The way he sneaks all his "twists" in so you don't expect them is that none of the twists make a damn bit of sense. The Sixth Sense was moderately entertaining until the end where it's revealed that the kid is scared to shit of every ghost except for Bruce Willis, who can apparently speak to his wife from beyond the grave so long as she's sleeping. Unbreakable wasn't bad. It just wasn't good. Signs was idiotic. Hey, Signs aliens. Next time you want to invade a planet, either get a less lame weakness or maybe don't pick a planet that's 3/4 water. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. The Village made me want to live in a society that rejected electricity just so I'd never accidentally catch a second of this turd on tv. Lady In The Water I didn't bother with, but I'm sure it was up to his usual standards. This guy's a hack. This is what would happen in Uwe Boll stopped adapting video games.
-
It's awesome! http://www.joblo.com/excl-red-band-happening
-
I don't know, he seems like his same old self in that clip to me. I'm not a huge fan of his. He looks crappy in this? As opposed to what? When has he ever been great in something? Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's terrible, just about as good as you can get when you get a rapper (term used loosely) turned actor.
-
I don't know, I just like the guy. I think hes great in all of his movies, mainly because he seems like a real guy.
