The Producer Of I AM LEGEND, The FAST AND THE FURIOUS Films, xXx, And I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER Brings Us...GOOSEBUMPS??

Published at:  May 15, 2008 10:06:33 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Neal Moritz, who produced the titles referenced in the headline as well as many other projects, has (naturally) joined with Scholastic Media to bring R.L. Stine's GOOSEBUMPS to the big screen for Columbia.

Studio is fast-tracking the project and is focusing on finding a writer.

Moritz said they likely will cast unknown child actors and then pepper the film with well-known thesps in supporting roles, much like Warner did with the "Harry Potter" franchise.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

GOOSEBUMPS previously spawned a three-season television series out of Canada (in the late 90s), and various spin-off publications and products.

You can find the official GOOSEBUMPS/Scholastic site HERE.

we already get watered down PG-13 horror movies....but now we'll get a watered down version of that? i was never into the show, i was too old at the time and couldnt get passed the kiddie/watered down horror but i appreciated the attempt to give kids something other than pokemon. anyway i'm sure it'll do pretty well for all those 20somethings who were fans back in the day.

    by waggy

In back to back posts we get someone claiming that horror movies aimed at children will be the downfall of humanity, and someone complaining that this kids' horror film will be 'watered down" and lightweight. I for one loved the Goosebumps books as a kid, and though I doubt this will appeal to me now, I'm sure todays kids (if they're anything like me) would love some spooky movies made just for them.

I thought we were done with R.L. Stine. I thought the world was rid of him already. Even as a kid I could never stand his writing, he's just awful. The only reason anyone liked him was for the stupid "twists" at the end of every goddammed one of his books. He's like Shyamalan, but without the talent.

    by xoanontorn

Goosebumps was filmed here in Montreal, it's one of those things where everyone knows someone who was in Goosebumps..funny that they will be making it into a movie.

On a non related note, John Cusack was recently in town filming 'The Factory', curiously enough they used a co-workers home as a major location. They completely renovated it, at no cost to my co-worker..they even offered to put it back exactly as it was...but she wasn't stupid enough to accept..

    by filmcritic3000

R.L. Stine is a hack. I read one or two of his books, but quickly saw that the emperor truly has no clothes. Each chapter ends with a stupid "scare" that exists for no reason.

I was reading Stephen King and J.D. Salinger in middle school. Our library also actually had Kurt Vonnegut's play "Happy Birthday, Wanda June". Thus began my love affair with the man's work.

You're right. It was either Stine or Pike. I think I still have stacks of those books. How the hell can anybody write at the volume at which those guys were published? Do you think 3 or 4 people were writing under the same name just so the publishing company could maintain consistency? I know a lot of 1930s newspaper strips and golden age comic books would do that.

    GOOSEBUMPS Could Be Scary

    by spymunk

Never underestimate the power of simple ideas to scare the crap out of you. I think one of the biggest problems with horror right now is that it's so high-concept that it forgets the essential things that really scare us. The best horror is always the work where the supernatural elements or the villain are in service to the true essential fears of our own everyday lives - the basic fundamental fears we all have. Movies like HOSTEL and SAW rely on overwrought concepts and ungainly execution. Can you ever really imagine yourself in the situations found in SAW?

It's alright because kids today love movies based on books and can't be bothered to read the source material. This movie will make enough to warrant a sequel. And fuck you guys that say Goosebumps (books) lacked any substance. At least back in the 90s kids were still reading properly written sentences NOT displayed on a screen. Also, show me a kid that can handle the fucking Orphanage. Or one of these gorefests/"horror" films this site is always going on about. To each his own when it comes to parenting styles, but holy fuck why torment YOURSELF with giving your kid nightmares? You're just going to have to get up every night for a month to put them back to sleep.

Jesus Christ, Where's Waldo. OH man I am like trying to image that as a film. Like I am just trying to concive the pitch meeting. Or the script writing process. Like would Waldo be a big enough property (probably not) to get a narnia like treatment? Or would he get the garfield treatment? Like if you think about it, Waldo exsits in some crazy ass world. (God as I am writing this I am almost convincing myself that there is a movie to be made here) You could make it some sort of Gullivers Travels like adventure movie. Like they could have these wide paned out shots where a bunch of shit it happening and then kind of zoom in on Waldo and get back to his adventure. I think I've found something to dedicate my life to now. I will make this happen.

    by spymunk

Indeed, GOOSEBUMPS could scare. Worst of all were the endings that just left you wanting to curl up in a little ball, sucking your thumb. You remember the ones: "So I drank the healing potion. It burned my throat all the way down. That must mean it's healing me, I thought. Before too long, though, I could feel my fingers going numb, and I fell onto the floor, unable to move. 'Yes,' said Matilda. 'Become one of the Puppet People!' And I did."
