MC Chill Wizard B takes a gander at Disney's TARZAN
Here we go with another quick look at TARZAN, a movie that I enjoy quite a bit, though it ain't quite as good as it could have been. (Had Rosie and the damn Pink Elephant didn't exist!) Anyway... Onto the review....
hey harry, saw tarzan, and will now sound off
Tarzan
I saw the film about a week ago so my memory isn't ultra-fresh but hell,
who cares?
i was a little excited about the film waiting for this film. since the
first trailer, honestly. what excited me so much was that Disney had its
first manly hero in a while - a guy who could bust some ass on the bad
guys. i know hercules was that but that movie was just such a.....
cartoon. beast in beauty and the beast was the last real badass hero, but
he turns into a little psuedo-androgynous pretty boy at the end, which
made me miserable.
don't get me wrong - im all for subversion of the patriarchy and
all that, but i want heros i can relate to, too. and i thought tarzan
would be it.
Did i get what I wanted? Kind of. Sure, he's pretty rugged, can
swing with the best of them and wrestle giant apes, but his strength
mysteriously dissappears when he has two pirate ruffians grab his arms.
Hmmm.... gorillas can crush human bones and he wrestles a giant one to the
ground but he cant struggle away from two beefy humans? Very hmmm... SO i
was dissapointed on that front.
Also dissapointed was I (Yoda syntax, I apologise) in the length
of the film. it's over just as you're really ready to rock. i thought
mulan had the same problem - big battle sequence and rush rush rush - it's
over.
It was likable, though - Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan doesn't do
anything 6 billion actors couldnt have, but so what (I still think Mr.
Lamberts Tarzan in Legend of Greystoke stands as the best ever, though)?
he doesnt suck. Minnie Driver as jane is ludicrously charming. her voice
as pleasant to listen to as her freckled self is to look at. lance
henrikson as the grand gorilla of sorts is great, masterful. his voice is
undeniabluy wonderful and it adds depths to his character that would
definately not be there without him. glenn close (in her 2nd tarzan
voice-over job, in case you've forgotten - the 1st being Greystoke, where
she overdubbed all of the atrocious Andie McDowells lines) is fine, nice
and all....nothing more to say there. thats about it for the worth
mentionings - oh! Rosie. okay, prepare for this. she's not that bad. yeah,
she's kind of obnoxious with her new york patois but how many of those
sidekick type characters in disney have always been slightly annoying? she
only sortof sings once... and not really anyway.
the animation is tight and the swinging, sliding, tarzan meets
extreme jungle navigation stuff is very fun, cool, etc.... and the
animations on the animals is cool, too, althought this main character
elephant is a little more "wackily" animated than everybody else. tarzan
was cool, even if his chin is damn pointy...
the movie doesnt stick with you, though. maybe if you see it with
a packed house (there was all of about 20something in a multi-hundred
theater when i saw it) it'll be more fun, but.... i dont know. it's
missing something... soul, i suppose. that element that was in lion king,
toy story, a bugs life - that thing that fills with with wonder and makes
you cheer and all that and laugh at shit you normally wouldn't. you know
what im talking about. tarzans alright, but it doesn't have soul.

I wanna see it! But then, I like Disney movies a lot... And this one looks like it has one of the better looking Disney babes since Jasmine..
-
Hope it has many of those great Disney songs...
-
Okay, this is getting sad. Mulan had promise, and Hunchback was way better than people give it credit. But Pocahontas and Hercules were trash. And then there's the live action junk like Flubber and 101 Dalmations. If this is the same kind of empty heartless mass-produced fluff Eisner seems to love then Disney needs to just stop animation and let Pixar do everything. Dreamworks has only one animated film and they're doing better than Disney already IMHO.
-
I like animated features, but only when they're done with style. This one looks like it has some cool-ass art. That's all I got to say about TARZAN.
-
I can't think of a more annoying personality. I really can't stand her stupid mugging, her demeanor or that godawful voice of hers, which will certainly help keep TARZAN from being a classic. VIVA TOM SELLECK!!!

Little Mermaid -- Really good. Rescuers Down Under -- Pretty good. Aladdin -- Great. Beauty and the Beast -- Great. The Lion King -- Great. Pochontas -- Not that good. The Hunchback of Notre Dame -- Realy good. Hercules -- Really really fun. Mulan -- Pretty darn good. Comparatively speaking, of course. As for a few non-Disney...Prince of Egypt -- Great. Anastasia -- Really good. Quest for Camelot -- Bad. The Swan Princess -- Pretty good. Batman Subzero -- Good.

I'm sad to report some news that is decidedly UNcool. The Swiss Family Robinson has been evicted from their famous treehouse at Disneyland USA.Father argued that the family had been good and loyal tenants for many years but it was to no avail. While packing up the dishes Mother broke into tears several times while Disney executives laughed and suggested,"We should take a picture of the #*$%@ crying and send it to Mr.Eisner. Give him a good laugh !" During the eviction process The Robinsons were informed that their movie simply did not fit the image of a "New" Disney movie made under the regime of Michael Eisner. No fart jokes ?! No jokes about getting hit in the balls ?! What kind of Disney film is that ???!!!! "Oh yeah", one of the suits said snidely,'an oooooooold Disney film. A so called classic." And with that the Disney Executives all began to laugh. Little Francis had to be restrained by his brothers Fritz and Ernst. As this sorry day dragged on it was determined that the Robinsons were taking too long to leave. Security guards were sent into the treehouse. As one of the guards approached Mother who was carrying a box of the family's wrapped china she assured him they were almost finished. "You're finished now you old cow!"the guard shouted as he brutally knocked the box of china out of Mother's hands and sent it crashing to the floor. This was too much for Father,Fritz,Ernst and Francis! A battle royale soon broke out !!! HOW DID IT END ????
Well....some of you may recall that The Swiss Family Robinson fared pretty well against the forces of nature and a small army of bloodthisrty South Seas pirates.(If you don't, then do yourself a great favor:By all means save the money that you would have spent on TARZAN and rent THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON!!!)Yes they did quite well for themselves. But you see this is "New" Disney under the leadership of Michael Eisner. The Swiss Family Robinson never stood a chance. Eisner has decreed that their day in the sun is over and that it was time for them to go the way of The Submarine Voyage. No time for tears. What does all this have to do with TARZAN you ask ? He's the new tenant. THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON TREEHOUSE that so many people grew up with is now TARZAN'S TREEHOUSE.Thanks for the memories Mike. -
A year ago, talkback had a good share of messages pertaining to disney animation. Nowadays...NO ONE CARES!

You say that the Phantom Menace is a kiddie movie with lots of cute elements and that we will feel 8 years-old again, then you say that you hate Terkoz and Tantor because they appeal to the children- where is the consistancy? I do agree with you about Disney's handling of the novel. I wish they stuck more closely to book, but Keane's vision of the apeman is right on. One more thing- Jar Jar Binks didn't ruin the movie for me, nor the unbelievable mixture of CGI and live-action (Roger Rabbit was more convincing!) the plot and dialogue ruined the movie for me.

From just seeing bits and pieces of this one, it seems like it's riding mainly on the merits of its stunning animation, and the whole 'legend' thing. Pocahontas did the same thing, but just came off as boring, and a bit dull. Also this review didn't mention the villain, Clayton, or Jane's father, so they couldn't have been all that memorable, like Scar or heck, Jafar. More like the blustery Gov. Ratcliffe, or the main villain in Mulan. (I can't even remember his name!) And I doubt there's ever going to be a blonde Disney heroine ever again, on account of them being seen as some kinda bimbo! (Prime example, the three girls in Beauty and the Beast.) But Jane, she already looks more to have more personality than most human female characters I've seen! The last heroine to pull that off was Meg.

and racist, but hey, I've beat that dead horse already.
-
Rosie the Ape is this movie's "Jar Jar". Oh well, let's all pray for a director's cut.

It's truely pathetic that with all the rights that they have secured with Studio Ghibli, they have yet to release any of Miyazaki's classic animated features with much fanfare.
I have been waiting for the Princess Mononoke since it was announced to be in theatres last November. Then it was pushed back and back until July 6 of this year. But once again, I guess priority should be given to souless works like Tarzan, so Mononoke is pushed back to October 29th.
SCREW YOU DISNEY! -
Thank you Daitsuno, you've just summed up my feelings on the whole matter. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one waiting for this masterpiece of animation. I was hoping that it would mop the floor with Tarzan this summer and be the breakthrough for anime into the mainstream audience, but alas that's not to be. I'm pretty pissed that it's been pushed back to October. That's a damn shame cause I've seen the film already and although I couldn't understand a word of it, the visuals are nothing short of spectacular.
-
I believe Meg and Jane were created and supervised by the great character animator Ken Duncan.

i was at the crew premiere last night and i have to say that TARZAN is the best disney feature animation piece to come down the mickey pipe in A LONG TIME. THIS FILM IS GREAT. peter schneider (animation pres.) said that the movie has that old disney feeling, and i have to agree with the chap. it's beautiful, exciting, and disney even takes a few risks with some violent content. it has some sweet emotional parts (the woman next to me was sobbing her dear little heart out) the phil collins drumming music (even though phil collins makes me nautious) is nifty, and thank god, no one breaks out into song. this movie is better than phantom and will easily make hundreds of millions... and jane is a babe. i looked everywhere for minnie in the el capitan lobby so i could get her number. she ditched me.
-
Well, folks, it is now a two weeks wait for this great animated masterpiece. Tarzan is no more than just astounding, which is good! This film looks so incredibly cool, not just the animation, which will KICK YOUR ASS, but the story looks so strong too! (i read it in a comic that is now in stores). There are some parts that will definitely make you cry for the energy, emotion, beauty...the music is great: it delivers big energy...the trailers are awesome...nearly all of the shots are beautiful (in all, i saw perhaps 15 mn of this flick, and it was always awesome!! I will be the first in line, this one is gonna kick The phantom Menace's butt very hard! (I'm not speaking about money, i know that people take disney animated for granted nowadays, but in quality...there may be some flaws in the movie, but overall, all critics i've read by now rave about Tarzan!!!!

That swiss family robinson tree house story papafrued was talkin
by baff
i am really annoyed that disney is doing this to the beloved treehouse that remains from the original concept that has more history and memories in it than tarzan will ever achieve. i would disney would want to be proud of one of the few successful live action movies it has made and one of the best examples of what disney stands for and wants to achieve. tarzan is not worthy of the branches that the swiss family robinson treehouse stood on.
