Werner Herzog's BAD LIEUTENANT remake? Double-You Tee Eff?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. What the shit is going down at Cannes? Why is every single report coming out of Cannes feeling like an April Fools joke?
Seriously. Point Break sequel? Donnie Darko sequel focusing on Donnie's little sister? Werner Herzog remaking BAD LIEUTENANT with Nicolas Cage in the Harvey Keitel role? WTF?!?
These aren't jokes, people. These are real projects. Is this the first American film from the '90s that's being remade? I know we can point to any number of Asian films from the '90s and '00s being remade, but this is the first I can think of that's American to American from that decade. Can you count reboots like THE HULK? Probably not... since the new one seems to pick up where the last left off.
Curiouser and curiouser. Next we'll hear that there's a remake of the remake of PSYCHO with Shia LaBeouf starring and Spielberg directing in SCHINDLER'S LIST style black and white... to make it feel more like the original...

Let him do what he wants, the crazy bastard can't help but make great films.
-
WTF a joke is not as funny as this
-
... now THAT would be the sign of the Apocalypse.
-
I'm baffled so many times why investors throw their money at certain films.
-
..Nic Cage moaning w/ his schlong hanging out..
-
But everything Herzog does is worth watching.
-
Don't put ideas in anyone's head!
-
a herzog doc on ferrera makes more sense than this... what's next? reservoir dogs? eattheblinds.blogspot.com
-
Jo Blo says Nic Cage is taking this one. What's up with the constantly being scooped by him 'eh?
-
I´m shocked.
-
I wish he could cast one of the grizzly's from Grizzly Man in the Harvey Keitel role and just call it 'Bad Bear'. It could be thematically related to the Timothy Treadwell doc... "BAD, BEAR! BAAAAAADDD, BEAR!!!!"
-
Why not remake Gladiator, Juno, No Country For Old Men, and The Lord of the Rings. Come on Hollywood! Don't pussy out on this remake mania!!!! I'd be curious to hear Herzog's reasons for wanting to do Bad Lieutenant.
-
is enough to not care that the original was awesome and for no reason needs to be remade. Nic Cage is up there as one of the best. He's crazy and should have cast as Willy Wonka. Bad lieutenant remake gets a get out of jail free card.
-
Someone had to quote it...
-
Why a remake? Wernor's got the nuts to do an original movie with similar themes! Why call it Bad Leutenant? Why remake a film no-ones really heard of? It's not like That title will get em flooding in just to see what he's done with it! Nic Cage? I was the biggest Cage nut back when he was doing stuff like Raising Arizon and Wild at Heart but I can't stand to watch him in the shit he's in these days. This aint cool news this is Aint it Confusing News . com
-
But Nicholas Cage to Rehash Keitel's role? He pumps out nothing but shit.
-
no, no bad lieutenant remake. let great movies stay great, stop shitting on them with awful remakes. goddamnit.
-
That'll probably be pretty fucking funny.
-
..."stick your tongue out"...
-
The banquet is well underway!
-
If only they could get the rights worked out for Schooly D's "Signifying Rapper."
-
This could be an amazing cinematic event

as if Hollywood couldn't continue to dig up more retarded retreads -
I hope this gives Cage the chance to redeem himself after the past couple of years he spent making nothing but crap. And by crap, I mean Ghost Rider.

"I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!"

You can sign me up for two tickets now. Not coz I'll have a date or anything but because I won't even hear this movie the first time because I'll be laughing so hard. This could actually top the Wicker Man Remake. This is now my most anticipated film of the future.
-
Verhoeven i can see wanting to do something like this, casting a shitty ham in an unnecessary remake and being totally in on the joke. but Herzog kind of needs excellent actors for his films to succeed.
-
Hollywood should not be allowed to make anything originale. There is just to much stuff that needs remakeing.
-
The first Meet the Parents was made in 1992 on a low budget. Then it was remade with big stars. Bad Lieutenant wasn't exactly a mainstream blockbuster.
-
but I've always been curious as to why he shows up in Harmony Korine films.
-
Shoot up half of the budget like Abel did. I wonder if Nic Cage will really fix onscreen like Keitel did. And just how tha fuck are you gonna replace the heroin chic "authenticity" of someone like Zoe Lund? (God rest her soul)
-
It was good enuff already as it was. what's next the rest of Ferra's indies like Ms. 45 or the king of new york? Fucking untalented Hollywood I tell ya.
-
Fuck H'wood and it's no having an original idea ass!
-
Whoever greenlit this must be a Red Sox fan, because other than replacing Darryl Strawberry with K-Rod so as to take a shot at the Yankees, this film has "completely unnecessary" written all over it.
-
came out a full seven months before Bad Lieutenant. So this remake will be the 2nd 1990s remake so far.
-
starring Nicholas Cage if Herzog directed it. Who cares if it's a remake? The dude doesn't take his film lightly so obviously he feels he can do something interesting with this.
-
I've seen almost all of his films, even the really rare ones. This does NOT sound true if you know anything about the guy.
-
a) if Werner Herzog is remaking something, there is no way in hell it is going to be a typical "Hollywood remake"
b) the only true remake Herzog has to his name so far is Nosferatu, which is one of the greatest vampire films ever made, so I wouldn't worry about this turning out awful. I don't think Herzog does awful.
c) Herzog is NOT a "so-so" director without Kinski. Anyone who thinks so needs their head examined and a copy of Stroszek, Lessons of Darkness, La Soufriere, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, and a shit-ton of other films he's made on DVD -
...abel ferrara gets to remake _aguirre_ with harvey k. "play your fuckin' pan pipes, you atzec fuck, or i'll use your skull as a crack pipe!!!!!" did i say _aguirre_? my sincerest apologies! obviously, i meant _every man for himself and god against all_ starring christopher walken as kaspar h.: "play the piano, bitch, and SHOW MY HUMUNCULOUS DWARF ASS YOUR NON-HUMUNCULOUS DWARF ASS!!!!" oops!! _every man for himself and god against all_??? what could i have possibly been thinking? i mean, a remake of _fata morgana_ with schooly d on the soundtrack running the "kashmir" down "DUH NUH NUH!/NUH NUH NUH!?NUH NUH NUH!/NUH NUH NUH!/drivin' through the desert, g./ my motherfuckin' self...." which is to say: double-you tee eff, for realz...
-
Seriously. This is a gift. Anybody who isn't frothing at the mouth to see this is crazier than Cage and Herzog combined.
-
I know this is blasphemy, given his outstanding filmography; but currently, my most favorite thing about that guy is his interviews. In all seriousness, youtube, etc. the man and watch his interviews. Also, The Incident at Loch Ness catches all sorts of shit here on AICN, but come on. That is the perfect movie to watch on IFC or Sundance or whatever when you stumble in at 2am on Saturday night... and it's got Herzog as Herzog.
-
You summed up all these announcements brilliantly. April Fools indeed. It is a low point for announceables.
-
so many different choices and you choose that lame PSYCHO joke? Bah...
-
I once tricked a friend of mine into watching Under The Tuscan Sun when he had a brutal hang-over. He's still pissed about that one.
-
I can't imagine Cage having the same dedication to the role as Keitel but this is a good chance for him to create an overacting tidal wave more powerful even than THE WICKER MAN. I was wishing BE KIND, REWIND had done BAD LIEUTENANT (specifically the scene where he sees Jesus and calls him a rat fucker) but this could be even better.
-
What the hell is going on here? This is pretty much the weirdest movie news ever released. What's next, is Terrence Malick going to remake Maniac Cop? I just don't get this at all. I mean, assuming that no one is yanking Variety's chain, I'm sure Herzog will kick ass as usual, but this just seems like an incredibly odd choice for him to make. I'm sure he will elaborate on what drew him to the project eventually with some statement that is so utterly nuts that it will make profound and perfect sense.
-
starring shia le bouf as shia le bouf.should be out before the original is released.hell yeah
-
However, Millenium Films has made a name for itself releasing shitty films and tarnishing legacies. Hopefully Herzog is wily enough to do his own thing and stay above it all. The resulting film is going to WEIRD.
-
Just how far will he go with it, is the question. Like when he said that he'd eat his hat if Errol Morris every finished a film--and did!
-
I think you mean his shoe, not his hat.
-
Are these studios looking at all of their old option deals on the sequels and just saying "Hey, we paid for it already so let's make sequels no one is looking for." Bad Lt. is not even twenty years old and they are calling for a remake. When that flick was made, the indie scene was booming and shit like this was provocative. This is just horse shit with an aging actor only getting more and more strange as time goes on. The Bad Lt. worked in its time with the way New York City was in the mid 90's. An update with Disney-Owned Manhattan will be awful. Also, no one was asking for this to be remade. You want to remake a fairly recent movie that can be easily be remade better? Remake Transformers you dickholes.
-
The fact that anyone would remake this film at all is weird.
The additional fact that Werner Herzog is doing it is icing on the cake.
The trifecta of Herzog wanting Nic Cage to star in this puts the film into lunar territory. -
I liked the original and I think this an uneccessary remake but with Herzog doing it, I am interested...
