Werner Herzog's BAD LIEUTENANT remake? Double-You Tee Eff?

Published at:  May 14, 2008 2:34:48 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. What the shit is going down at Cannes? Why is every single report coming out of Cannes feeling like an April Fools joke?

Seriously. Point Break sequel? Donnie Darko sequel focusing on Donnie's little sister? Werner Herzog remaking BAD LIEUTENANT with Nicolas Cage in the Harvey Keitel role? WTF?!?

These aren't jokes, people. These are real projects. Is this the first American film from the '90s that's being remade? I know we can point to any number of Asian films from the '90s and '00s being remade, but this is the first I can think of that's American to American from that decade. Can you count reboots like THE HULK? Probably not... since the new one seems to pick up where the last left off.

Curiouser and curiouser. Next we'll hear that there's a remake of the remake of PSYCHO with Shia LaBeouf starring and Spielberg directing in SCHINDLER'S LIST style black and white... to make it feel more like the original...

    by ingloriousjedi

is enough to not care that the original was awesome and for no reason needs to be remade. Nic Cage is up there as one of the best. He's crazy and should have cast as Willy Wonka. Bad lieutenant remake gets a get out of jail free card.

It's not like That title will get em flooding in just to see what he's done with it! Nic Cage? I was the biggest Cage nut back when he was doing stuff like Raising Arizon and Wild at Heart but I can't stand to watch him in the shit he's in these days. The first Meet the Parents was made in 1992 on a low budget. Then it was remade with big stars. Bad Lieutenant wasn't exactly a mainstream blockbuster.

    by gwai lo

    a) if Werner Herzog is remaking something, there is no way in hell it is going to be a typical "Hollywood remake"

    b) the only true remake Herzog has to his name so far is Nosferatu, which is one of the greatest vampire films ever made, so I wouldn't worry about this turning out awful. I don't think Herzog does awful.

    c) Herzog is NOT a "so-so" director without Kinski. Anyone who thinks so needs their head examined and a copy of Stroszek, Lessons of Darkness, La Soufriere, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, and a shit-ton of other films he's made on DVD

I know this is blasphemy, given his outstanding filmography; but currently, my most favorite thing about that guy is his interviews. In all seriousness, youtube, etc. the man and watch his interviews. Also, The Incident at Loch Ness catches all sorts of shit here on AICN, but come on. That is the perfect movie to watch on IFC or Sundance or whatever when you stumble in at 2am on Saturday night... and it's got Herzog as Herzog.

I can't imagine Cage having the same dedication to the role as Keitel but this is a good chance for him to create an overacting tidal wave more powerful even than THE WICKER MAN. I was wishing BE KIND, REWIND had done BAD LIEUTENANT (specifically the scene where he sees Jesus and calls him a rat fucker) but this could be even better.

What the hell is going on here? This is pretty much the weirdest movie news ever released. What's next, is Terrence Malick going to remake Maniac Cop? I just don't get this at all. I mean, assuming that no one is yanking Variety's chain, I'm sure Herzog will kick ass as usual, but this just seems like an incredibly odd choice for him to make. I'm sure he will elaborate on what drew him to the project eventually with some statement that is so utterly nuts that it will make profound and perfect sense.

Are they just dusting off all of their options.

    by nicegoogly

Are these studios looking at all of their old option deals on the sequels and just saying "Hey, we paid for it already so let's make sequels no one is looking for." Bad Lt. is not even twenty years old and they are calling for a remake. When that flick was made, the indie scene was booming and shit like this was provocative. This is just horse shit with an aging actor only getting more and more strange as time goes on. The Bad Lt. worked in its time with the way New York City was in the mid 90's. An update with Disney-Owned Manhattan will be awful. Also, no one was asking for this to be remade. You want to remake a fairly recent movie that can be easily be remade better? Remake Transformers you dickholes.
