CBS’ MOONLIGHT & SHARK Bite No More!! THE UNIT, CHRISTINE, RULES & HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Live Another Season!!
I am – Hercules!!
When CBS announces its 2008-2009 schedule on Wednesday, its vampire private investigator drama “Moonlight” will not be on it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The same story indicates that sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” will be CBS’ only sophomore series in the coming season. “Cane,” “Welcome to the Captain,” “Kid Nation” and “Viva Laughlin” were CBS series that didn't get beyond season one.
Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood, meanwhile, relates that "Shark" swims no more and that "How I Met Your Mother," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Rules of Engagement" and "The Unit" will all be back next season.

... which I would have preferred a Season 6 of.
-
... the very first scene I happened to catch was the lead actor in a long coat standing on a roof of a building as the sun was starting to rise. Add to that the plot about the female vampire who made him, later turning up but now being human, his being a PI and following from a distance some girl as she grew up - well it all seemed like it was lifted from BTVS and Angel. I'm sure there's parts which were different but after seeing all of these elements in one episode being the same, I didn't care to stay around and find out.
-
At least according to TV Guide.
-
Sorry to anybody who was a fan but I really wanted this to fail. It totally ripped of Angel's premise but was never as good.
-
Friggin awesome.
And not be cause I was a geek, either. Really...........
Aw, shut up. -

They say MAY take its slot, though. -
I wasn't even aware of this show until a few weeks ago when I flipped and saw it. Thought it was a TV movie or something. From what I saw, it looked like a crappy ripoff of Angel. DO NOT WANT.
-
I wish they showed the first episode instead. Judging from what they showed in the 2nd ep, the first one should be a real c*** tease. If only it was a cable show, and not free tv.

But a healthy dose of Forever Knight, which Angel also ripped off shamelessly, but did so in good fun (something Moonlight-in all it's Joel Silver-y schlocktastitude, failed to have a sense of humor about).
The fact that (Buffy and Angel alum) David Greenwalt jumped ship before this puppy aired pretty much spelled doom for anything fun and unique about this show. I liked Alex O'Laughlin, but as fun as Jason Dohring as Josef was, casting "younger and hipper" (Rade Serbedzija was supposed to play him originally-which would have been amazing) is never a quality sign. Eh, some of the show was fun, but it was just too compromised and co-opted too early on (much like Bionic Woman). -
Watched the first two episodes and hated them. Thought the two leads were terrible and the plot was derivative and overblown.
Honestly, the very vocal fanbase also annoyed the hell out of me. Now I understand people's negative reaction to Firefly fans. -
CBS is fucking up big time here if they're not renewing it. While season two lacked the punch of the first (recasts, rewrites and time slot switches didn't help). A fix in the writer's room would have been smarter than letting James fucking Woods walk. While Fox's "Justice" promised to be "Like House, but with lawyers", Shark actually delivered on that promise and still had a distinctive lead. I'm gonna miss that one.

Some Interesting News: Arcade Fire Are Scoring The Box
by troutmaskreplicant
Richard Kelly's The Box (or Richard Matheson's, have it your way) This is proper news and it hasn't been reported. Hmmmmmmm.
-
The last half of the season was actually pretty entertaining and made the show stand out from being an ANGEL and FOREVER KNIGHT ripoff. Ah, well...At least REAPER lives on as a midseason replacement.
-
Stop putting on sci-fi, supernatural tv show, you cancel 99.99% of them and we know it. That's why we don't watch them or at least give then a chance. Yes, Moonlight was ripping off Angel and, Forever Knight but, I would have given it a chance if I thought CBS would.
-
I have mixed feelings on this. I stopped watching after the oh-so-terrible pilot, but I tuned in when there was nothing else on a couple of weeks ago, and it seemed to have really improved. The writing shake-up must have been good for this show, and the leads were SO much more comfortable in their roles. Sure, it was a blatant rip-off of Angel and Forever Knight, but it was far more enjoyable than...anything else on CBS (minus HIMYM), with pretty likable characters/actors. Oh well, no huge loss to TV, just a little disheartening since I just started to kinda enjoy it. It was never more than guilty pleasure material, though, so maybe the leads (mainly Jason Dohring and Alex O'Loughlin) can get some better roles now. Sophia Myles wasn't bad, either.
-
Too bad they didn't keep them on the run though.
-
what exactly was his role in this? badguy? goodguy? sidekick? He was the shit on VMars...
-
into something good, this time.
-
The scuttlebutt is that James Woods was being an issue off-camera. With the ratings not high enough to deal with it, CBS cut it loose.
-
when i watched moonlight i just thought to myself it wasn't as good as angel. i keot watching, and realised i just wanted more angel. then i cut it loose and low and behold its gone!. never bothered with shark. i prefer my boston legal and house for a) assholes and b) lawyers. i have watched a couple of bing bang theory eps. not exactly must see tv, but amusing enough
-
Jason Dohring in Moonlight was the main character's best friend who's a much older, wealthier, vampire. And yeah, he was the shit on VM (the reason I bothered with Moonlight in the first place), and he was similarly snarky in this show, as well.
-
with much weaker writers
-
Nice to see them do something else.
-
Glad to see this wannabe Whedon show didn't get picked up for the fall. I caught five minutes of it the other night...long enough to see that the vamp had a kid or something (surprised he wasn't named Connor)...Good shows never get recognized the way they should...only by a handful of people and then ripoff imitations don't come close. Battlestar needs to be given its due soon as well.
"Now let's go to work" -
for another 13 episodes. hey, its the cw. you can't expect them to afford a full season of anything that isnt reality tv.

Forever Knight may have been the 1st TV vamp detective...
by jacksparasites
...but I'd hardly say that Angel ripped it off. Take away the initial premise and I can't think of any similarities in the 2 shows. Angel didn't work on the police force, didn't have partners who were constantly in the dark about his vampire nature, couldn't fly, never owned a tanning bed, Angel's entire cast only may have all died in the series finale whereas the entire Forever Knight cast minus 1 guy died by the end. Though both did both drink blood & avoid sunlight--where else could the Angel writers have gotten those concepts?
-
...too bad about the loss of Shark though. Sure, it was a bit generic, but James Woods was still great fun to watch chew up the scenery each week.
-
...should get snapped up to be in the first show that offers her multiple opportunities to wear next to nothing and act snide while doing so. That woman absolutely slays me.
-
I don't think it'll take too long for her to land on her feet elsewhere, I just hope it's on a good show. Or better yet, cable...
-
And yet Survivor survives.
"God?? No God." -
The build up a nice arc mid-season but the last episode were mediocre. Obviously they didn't care anymore.... Great to see the Unit back. Good quality action-drama with a great cast....NO Clinton, No Obama, Give us President David Palmer. Best TV-President ever!!!
-
Thanx flickchick for the info. I was actually going to watch the show cuz of dohring and just to see how Alex O'Laughlin would do on it since I watched him on this past season of the shield... but I think it was on fridays and I'm usually not home friday nights.
hope dohring gets on another show, he's awesome.. -
the vampire talks to his girlfriend about dashboard confessional and jimmy eat world. the show's writing is usually sub-par, but that scene was especially cringe-worthy.
-
wow... did not know that..
-
THANK YOU GOD!! First you grant me pics of the hotness that is Megan Fox, then you allow the Unit to be renewed. OH HAPPY DAY!!!

People left distraut by Moonlight's cancelling . . .
by skidmarkedundies
Should just buy Angel Season 1 to 5. IT'S THE SAME SHOW.
-
It wasn't anything really special, but it was quite entertaining. Hopefully the final episode will offer some closure.
-
Thank you, thank you, thank you CBS! In gratitude, I will also continue to watch BIG BANG even though it is more like a little pop when it comes to making me happy.
-
that doesn't mean it didn't suck, though. So yeah, some plot points might be similar, but stylistically and tonally, the shows couldn't be further apart. There were a few interesting things about how they approached the vamp mythos, but I just felt the leads were totally flat. If they did a whole show on Josef, then I would have been interested. I hope Jason Dohring gets a better show soon.
-
The sooner Dohring finds another show, the better off the TV landscape will be. Alex O'Loughlin seems to have some nice star potential, too (with only this and The Shield to go by thus far). And Angel and Moonlight were NOT the same show. Angel was FAR better, but Moonlight was starting to have its own charms, too. Like I said, though, in a guilty pleasure sorta way.
-
The difference is simple, ruven: Dohring doesn't go around throwing it in everyone's faces. Also, he's not scary. And a better actor.
-
I thought the same thing about the Unit when it first aired, and lost track of it. A few months ago I found the first two seasons on dvd for dirt cheap and I changed my tune. The wives stuff is rarely interesting, President Palmer's wife might be the most annoying bitch on tv, but the missions the soldiers go on are top notch... it's really like watching two different shows (one excellent and one not so good)... i'm pleased it's returning.
-
I liked him the little bit he was on The Shield.. interested to see what he ends up doing..
-
or targeted to a young audience? Moonlight was doing well with the 18-49 audiences considering its crappy timeslot. CBS is definitely the most boring of the 5 majors.
-
It was the perfect show to Tivo and watch over the weekend.
-
moonlight is an awesome show...honestly i dont know how the unit could be back.... tried watching that and it was unwatchable....at least survivor isnt going anywhere.
-
Granted, it may take a bit of a commitment, as it can be heavy in the continuity, but this season the show was just as good, and sometimes even funnier than The Office. Admittedly, the most recent episodes seem to be focusing more on Barney, rather than Ted, but the show is still on the ball.
-
Every week it had worse numbers than Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs, and it's numbers were no better than Close to Home a year earlier -- which was cancelled because it skewed too old. You can't blame timeslot when it was scheduled between two good performers on a Friday night.
-
Only lasted four episodes but Goddamn was that show good. I've heard the scripts are being used as guides in some screenwriting classes, and I'm not surprised at all. And you can't go wrong with Goldblum. Shark's cancelation reminded me of it, is all.
-
Julia Louis-Dreyfus NOW (and end of Seinfeld) is leagues more attractive than early Seinfeld Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
-
I really tried to get into this show but it just wasn't working. Why do all "good" vampires want to be human? In one episode he took some "cure" and got his ass kicked. Screw that. And the whole daylight thing? Why bother to call the show Moonlight when they can go out during the day??? Might as well call it St. John: Vampire PI.
-
I am SO glad this show is getting a second season! It's hilarious!! Who knew a show about genius nerds would be good?
-
Nikki Finke said maybe. Therefore it is gospel, right? I really could give two shits cuz I never watched it. I'm going back to the Megan Fox pictures now (audible zipper).
-
I just hope they don't think they need to keep dredging Britney Spears up.
-
And in spite of how the last season is hardly great television, the facthat the last episode deals with them showing up to their office, seeing the set being disassembled, and they find out "the show has been cancelled" and then try to deal with it. And HIMYM doesn't want to be doing Britney Spears stuff, the network does. Neil Patrick Harris even stated he hates working with her, and then had to backpeddle...
-
NPH talked about that on the Adam Corrolla show and he was totally misquoted on the Britney thing. They could pro'ly score a couple million more viwers if they scooped her up and made her a regular. What else is she gonna do, make music?
-
'nuff said.Hope the CW rumor is true, but won't hold my breath.
-
... They deserve a slap after cancelling Angel instead of giving it a sixth season. Or at the very least, for not working out earlier that they were going to cancel the show so that the makers could have made a less abrupt finale and structured it differently. As it was, all the replacement shows for Angel failed miserably so we all lost out.
-
... for cancelling Veronica Mars.
-
Moonlight was good, even if it wasn't as good as Angel per se. It won a People's Choice Award and it gets cancelled? Lame. Move it to SciFi. Hell, move it to HBO or Showtime and give it some real bite. The cast is better than the scripts, I might add. I am stunned over Shark getting cancelled too. You don't mess with James Woods...he has a high school named after him! CBS should just cancel all non-CSI drama and be 70% reality tv.
-
Maybe if they would have kept it on the same night, and quit moving it all over the place, it would have had a decent chance.
-
Moonlight won best new drama. CBS is a bunch of dipshits. The only good thing left on Network is Pushing Daisies. I'm AMAZED that is still on.
-
that would suck since I can't get a fucking affiliate here in town and DirecTV won't allow me the LA feed. Which is BS.
I do have to say though, they were bowing to the Buffy/Angel fans with the ep before last when they played the same song Buffy and Angel had playing, The Lucky Ones, in an episode.
CBS is 70 percent reality TV. -
It looked really good when they showed it on the Soup.
-
Derivative dreck, actually. The only bad thing about its cancellation is that once again Jason Dohring has no job. When is this guy going to find a series (or a film) which will actually put him front and center where he belongs instead of marginalizing his character (Veronica Mars) or under-utilizing him (Moonlight)?
-
how about a show about a vampire who works as a police detective!!!
-
I liked The James Woods Show.
If he can't be a lawyer, give him another show. A vampire detective, perhaps? -
Enormously successful, yes, but their attempts at anything with even the slightest edge is mediocre. Moonlight was another underachiever, and the (network induced?) turmoil behind the scenes didn't help. After the summer, Swingtown will be but a memory.
-
A PI who's a werewolf. I don't know where I come up with this stuff
-
I'm pissed CBS is giving up on this show. It may have had SOME similarities with Angel, but really, they were two different shows. I don't understand all the love for Jason Dohring. He's a terrible actor. He brought NOTHING to the Josef character. He was just a smarmy dick! They never should have gone with the "younger, hipper" cast. Rade Serbedzija would have made a MUCH BETTER Josef. red1701, you should have kept watching last week's episode. He WASN'T Mick's son. It was discovered at the end of the episode.
-
I'm glad Angel didn't get a sixth season. The fifth season was stupid. Angel and the gang spent 4yrs fighting Wolfram and Hart, and then they suddenly own it? COME ON! Season 4 should have been the finale. It should have ended after Connor killed Jasmine and Lilah came back and said "Congratulations".
-
the half hour sitcomm. Excellent. Shame about Moonlight Sohpia Myles and Jason Dohring were good. Mick was getting better, but they needed to develop his character beyond standar hero mode. Theb problem with Big Bang Theory and most half hour sitcomms to com out last years, especially on CBS, is that they all feel like they were written in the eighties. i mean halfd the jokes in Big Bang sound lik the they were ripped off from the original Revenge of the Nerds, its as if the writers all fell asleep in 1989 and just woke up, having missed pretty much everything in between. HIYM is a wonderful aberration in that it's funny and the writers actually seem to live in the 21st century.
-
that does something kinda lame, like bag groceries by day, or works at a gas station or makes donuts at crispy cream. Maybe at night they hunt down people that talked down to them during the day. A high school janitor by day, and then they turn into a vampire that kills messy kids that spill shit at the school during the night.
-
I loved Raines nearly as much as I loved Book Of Daniel. Some shows are just too good for TV.Ading Shark the character and Woods the actor to the ever changing boston legal mix would be an awesome idea. If it worked for Munch... And I wouldn't mnd if they tossed Juliana Margulies' Elizibeth Canterbury in there, too. Perhaps the most aggressively unlikeable TV heroine of all time. And a very handsome woman, to boot.
-
a detective who is a vampire who works cases about werewolves who are doctors who only treat lawyers who appear on reality shows.
