CBS’ MOONLIGHT & SHARK Bite No More!! THE UNIT, CHRISTINE, RULES & HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Live Another Season!!

Published at:  May 13, 2008 7:13:19 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

When CBS announces its 2008-2009 schedule on Wednesday, its vampire private investigator drama “Moonlight” will not be on it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The same story indicates that sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” will be CBS’ only sophomore series in the coming season. “Cane,” “Welcome to the Captain,” “Kid Nation” and “Viva Laughlin” were CBS series that didn't get beyond season one.

Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood, meanwhile, relates that "Shark" swims no more and that "How I Met Your Mother," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Rules of Engagement" and "The Unit" will all be back next season.

    I mean, for example ...

    by shan

... the very first scene I happened to catch was the lead actor in a long coat standing on a roof of a building as the sun was starting to rise. Add to that the plot about the female vampire who made him, later turning up but now being human, his being a PI and following from a distance some girl as she grew up - well it all seemed like it was lifted from BTVS and Angel. I'm sure there's parts which were different but after seeing all of these elements in one episode being the same, I didn't care to stay around and find out.

    Not Just Angel

    by shadowvoyd

But a healthy dose of Forever Knight, which Angel also ripped off shamelessly, but did so in good fun (something Moonlight-in all it's Joel Silver-y schlocktastitude, failed to have a sense of humor about).

The fact that (Buffy and Angel alum) David Greenwalt jumped ship before this puppy aired pretty much spelled doom for anything fun and unique about this show. I liked Alex O'Laughlin, but as fun as Jason Dohring as Josef was, casting "younger and hipper" (Rade Serbedzija was supposed to play him originally-which would have been amazing) is never a quality sign. Eh, some of the show was fun, but it was just too compromised and co-opted too early on (much like Bionic Woman).

Watched the first two episodes and hated them. Thought the two leads were terrible and the plot was derivative and overblown.

Honestly, the very vocal fanbase also annoyed the hell out of me. Now I understand people's negative reaction to Firefly fans.

Oh, and on the subject of Shark

    by shadowvoyd

CBS is fucking up big time here if they're not renewing it. While season two lacked the punch of the first (recasts, rewrites and time slot switches didn't help). A fix in the writer's room would have been smarter than letting James fucking Woods walk. While Fox's "Justice" promised to be "Like House, but with lawyers", Shark actually delivered on that promise and still had a distinctive lead. I'm gonna miss that one.

Stop putting on sci-fi, supernatural tv show, you cancel 99.99% of them and we know it. That's why we don't watch them or at least give then a chance. Yes, Moonlight was ripping off Angel and, Forever Knight but, I would have given it a chance if I thought CBS would.

    Hmmm...

    by flickchick85

I have mixed feelings on this. I stopped watching after the oh-so-terrible pilot, but I tuned in when there was nothing else on a couple of weeks ago, and it seemed to have really improved. The writing shake-up must have been good for this show, and the leads were SO much more comfortable in their roles. Sure, it was a blatant rip-off of Angel and Forever Knight, but it was far more enjoyable than...anything else on CBS (minus HIMYM), with pretty likable characters/actors. Oh well, no huge loss to TV, just a little disheartening since I just started to kinda enjoy it. It was never more than guilty pleasure material, though, so maybe the leads (mainly Jason Dohring and Alex O'Loughlin) can get some better roles now. Sophia Myles wasn't bad, either.

    by jacksparasites

...but I'd hardly say that Angel ripped it off. Take away the initial premise and I can't think of any similarities in the 2 shows. Angel didn't work on the police force, didn't have partners who were constantly in the dark about his vampire nature, couldn't fly, never owned a tanning bed, Angel's entire cast only may have all died in the series finale whereas the entire Forever Knight cast minus 1 guy died by the end. Though both did both drink blood & avoid sunlight--where else could the Angel writers have gotten those concepts?

    Moonlight not an Angel ripoff

    by oisin5199

that doesn't mean it didn't suck, though. So yeah, some plot points might be similar, but stylistically and tonally, the shows couldn't be further apart. There were a few interesting things about how they approached the vamp mythos, but I just felt the leads were totally flat. If they did a whole show on Josef, then I would have been interested. I hope Jason Dohring gets a better show soon.

The sooner Dohring finds another show, the better off the TV landscape will be. Alex O'Loughlin seems to have some nice star potential, too (with only this and The Shield to go by thus far). And Angel and Moonlight were NOT the same show. Angel was FAR better, but Moonlight was starting to have its own charms, too. Like I said, though, in a guilty pleasure sorta way.

The wives stuff is rarely interesting, President Palmer's wife might be the most annoying bitch on tv, but the missions the soldiers go on are top notch... it's really like watching two different shows (one excellent and one not so good)... i'm pleased it's returning.

Granted, it may take a bit of a commitment, as it can be heavy in the continuity, but this season the show was just as good, and sometimes even funnier than The Office. Admittedly, the most recent episodes seem to be focusing more on Barney, rather than Ted, but the show is still on the ball.

    by chrth

Every week it had worse numbers than Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs, and it's numbers were no better than Close to Home a year earlier -- which was cancelled because it skewed too old. You can't blame timeslot when it was scheduled between two good performers on a Friday night.

Hell, move it to HBO or Showtime and give it some real bite. The cast is better than the scripts, I might add. I am stunned over Shark getting cancelled too. I'm glad Angel didn't get a sixth season. The fifth season was stupid. Angel and the gang spent 4yrs fighting Wolfram and Hart, and then they suddenly own it? COME ON! Season 4 should have been the finale. It should have ended after Connor killed Jasmine and Lilah came back and said "Congratulations".

Hallalujia, HIYM is back the last best hope for

    by crichtonastronut

the half hour sitcomm. Excellent. Shame about Moonlight Sohpia Myles and Jason Dohring were good. Mick was getting better, but they needed to develop his character beyond standar hero mode. Theb problem with Big Bang Theory and most half hour sitcomms to com out last years, especially on CBS, is that they all feel like they were written in the eighties. i mean halfd the jokes in Big Bang sound lik the they were ripped off from the original Revenge of the Nerds, its as if the writers all fell asleep in 1989 and just woke up, having missed pretty much everything in between. HIYM is a wonderful aberration in that it's funny and the writers actually seem to live in the 21st century.

I'd like to see a vampire or werewolf

    by inwosuxred

that does something kinda lame, like bag groceries by day, or works at a gas station or makes donuts at crispy cream. Maybe at night they hunt down people that talked down to them during the day. A high school janitor by day, and then they turn into a vampire that kills messy kids that spill shit at the school during the night.

    Daniel-K and DevilCat

I loved Raines nearly as much as I loved Book Of Daniel. Some shows are just too good for TV.Ading Shark the character and Woods the actor to the ever changing boston legal mix would be an awesome idea. If it worked for Munch... And I wouldn't mnd if they tossed Juliana Margulies' Elizibeth Canterbury in there, too. Perhaps the most aggressively unlikeable TV heroine of all time. And a very handsome woman, to boot.
