A Poster For The Tom Hanks Produced CITY OF EMBER Is Now Online!!

Published at:  May 13, 2008 10:44:28 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Cinematical has posted a teaser sheet for CITY OR EMBER. This is the new project from MONSTER HOUSE director Gil Kenan.

Caroline Thompson (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS) is scripting, based on a book by Jeanne Duprau. An editorial review at amazon.com (available HERE) describes the story thusly:

It is always night in the city of Ember. But there is no moon, no stars. The only light during the regular twelve hours of "day" comes from floodlamps that cast a yellowish glow over the streets of the city. Beyond are the pitch-black Unknown Regions, which no one has ever explored because an understanding of fire and electricity has been lost, and with it the idea of a Moveable Light. "Besides," they tell each other, "there is nowhere but here" Among the many other things the people of Ember have forgotten is their past and a direction for their future. For 250 years they have lived pleasantly, because there has been plenty of everything in the vast storerooms. But now there are more and more empty shelves--and more and more times when the lights flicker and go out, leaving them in terrifying blackness for long minutes. What will happen when the generator finally fails?

Twelve-year-old Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet seem to be the only people who are worried. They have just been assigned their life jobs--Lina as a messenger, which leads her to knowledge of some unsettling secrets, and Doon as a Pipeworker, repairing the plumbing in the tunnels under the city where a river roars through the darkness. But when Lina finds a very old paper with enigmatic "Instructions for Egress," they use the advantages of their jobs to begin to puzzle out the frightening and dangerous way to the city of light of which Lina has dreamed. As they set out on their mission, the haunting setting and breathless action of this stunning first novel will have teens clamoring for a sequel.

EMBER stars Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, and Martin Landau, and will reunite Kenan with MONSTER HOUSE composer Douglas Pipes.

Live action. Only seen a couple of production stills, but they were definitely live action.

    So it's a metaphor for the U.S.?

    by potsmokinalien

I'm interested, but is it a kids' movie or what? The poster makes it look like the Incredibles or something. Too bad Shyamalan has been banished from Hollywood, otherwise I bet this would have been right up his alley.

I've already seen this movie. It was called Dark City, Matrix Reloaded and The Time Machine. I've also seen the poster too. It was called Eragon.

    Worst Poster Ever?

    by crow3711

Awesome sounding flick, very intriguing premise, but man that poster is a disaster. It looks like it should be the follow-up to ZOOM. Some kind of kiddie superhero flick. It should have more a The Fountain vibe, beautiful and haunting.

    by toonol

The summary sounds interesting, and I'm tentatively looking forward to it... but this scares me a little:
"...will have teens clamoring for a sequel."
Anything that's so blatantly intended to be a franchise starter is almost always a failure. That's what killed Golden Compass.

    by troutmaskreplicant

It was filmed inside a giant building that was used to paint huge ships. It must have been awesome to look at. I hope this turns out well for them. Bad poster though, although obviously just a teaser. Were they going for an OZ vibe? Not the HBO prison show, needless to say...

"Anything that's so blatantly intended to be a franchise starter is almost always a failure. That's what killed Golden Compass"
Well I'd say the dodgy script or inexperienced director might have been what killed the poor old Golden Compass.

The lover of epic metaphysical cinema in me weeps for what might've been with His Dark Materials. Those books are what I want a civilization 4000 years in our future to find in the ruins of our own, and assume is our Bible.::bonghit::

    Incidentally, this poster is bad

    by frietag

It's not the worst poster ever (that honor still falls to Tarsem's THE FALL, narrowly edging out GOOD LUCK CHUCK's Lennon/Yoko ripoff). But the Talkbackers are right: compared to this, the original book cover was a classic image.

(It really does look like an Internet Explorer poster too -- good one ricarleite.)

If you're looking for a movie metaphor for

    by creasybear

environmentalism and the importance of recycling, this is the movie you've been waiting for. From the book, the Mayor represents us greedy Americans and our insatiable desire for, uh, street lights and such. The book also works on a simpler, Twilight Zoney, what-if level.

The poster should be less flashy. Get rid of the logo and stupid "Get out" deal and you're one the right track.

But it sounds neat. I'll keep an eye on this one.

    E = Corporate Logo

    by cobbio

Alice13 is right. That E-lightning circle looks like a Microsoft logo. I was thinking of something else when I first saw the poster, but now I can't get that Microsoft image out of my head. Fuck.
I really want to like this film, but they'll need to do a lot better (less obvious corporate dicksucking) to get me in the theater. A more evocative, classic logo would go a long way toward this.

intriguing concept, awful last tagline & poster

    by pipergates

But it seems to be in very capable hands...Isn't Robin Williams in this?
Must be terrible being an earnest author and having a bleeding tagline like that stuck on your efforts.
