Spielberg finally focusing on the other beard... no, not Lucas...

Published at:  May 11, 2008 11:33:39 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Word on the street has been that Spielberg was quietly developing his Lincoln picture while finishing up on INDY 4. Looks like that word has been proven right.

Variety has a story linking to an interview with Spielberg where he discusses the Civil War/Lincoln flick, saying he's hoping to start production early next year, making it a nearly back to back effort with TINTIN, which he shoots this fall. It's a trend he's been doing since JURASSIC PARK/SCHINDLER'S LIST. He goes for the pop film, then the drama. WAR OF THE WORLDS/MUNICH. Now, TINTIN/Lincoln flick.

Liam Neeson is still attached to play President Lincoln and Tony Kushner's still on for screenplay.

Can't wait for him to get to this one. You?

    by allpowerfulwizardofoz

Spielberg has become a better film maker when sticks to the serious and biographical. His recent attempts at fantasy or sci fi with the exception of A.I. which I enjoyed have been tepid at best. War of Worlds was meh. Indy 4 looks fucking terrible. The about Lincoln though will more then likely be pretty good.

I suppose Hillary-loving Spielberg will give into the pressure of the political correctness police and have Lincoln killed by a white man, when really we all know he was assassinated by Al Qaeda. Oh, and as for the people lambasting Liam Neeson for being British or having a British accent... he is neither British, nor does he have a British accent (Irish people generally don't).

    Hello AICN,

I'll be doing a Q&A the week before Indiana Jones is released. We're actually in editing all night for some last minute changes, and I wanted to stop in and say hello. Not to worry, Trial of Chicago 7 is still on track, Aaron is doing amazing work, and I'm excited to get it. Harry tells me he'll be making a post later today where you can send in any questions you might have for me. Thanks again guys,

Spielbergs heart is in Drama these days

    by industrykiller!

His last few genre efforts, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, AI, and now it's looking like Indiana Jones were all underwhelming offers if still technically impressive. But Munich is easily one of the best films ever made, a masterpiece in almost every respect and hopefully the day will come when it's widely recognized as such. So when I see him taking on a character like Lincoln it's a reason to celebrate, especially with an actor like Liam Neeson, who hasn't been giving nearly enough to do to show his talent since Kinsey.

    by ray gamma

In recent years Spielberg has been constantly juggling half-a-dozen major projects all at once. But it doesn't seem to be a method for creating huge successful classics like his early movies. Just look at his IMDB entry to see how many "in production" titles are currently listed for him.

Steven, we love you, but maybe you need to focus on making just one really great movie again?

Was he racist just towards blacks or any race that wasn't white? Here's a quote from Booth - "This country was formed for the white not for the black man. And looking upon African slavery from the same stand-point, as held by those noble framers of our Constitution, I for one, have ever considered it, one of the greatest blessings (both for themselves and us) that God ever bestowed upon a favored nation." - Is he saying that having slaves is a blessing?

    what's actually the news/The interview

    by sabinewringer

Just to give you the souce and the basic information – that's what Mr. Spielberg told me doing an interview with him for the German Newsmagazine FOCUS:
    1. He's going to shoot in September "Tintin". His answer to my question if that's not depending on a possible actors' strike:
"No, that has nothing to do with that. It's an animation film, it's motion capture.
    2. He said Peter Jackson is going to shoot the second movie in january.
    3. By then he wants to start shooting "Lincoln", trying to get the movie out in late 2009, because that's the year of Lincoln's 200. birthday.
    4. "The Chicago 7" may be following, right now the script is not ready yet.
It's been a long interview (1 hour/one-on-one, two weeks ago at his office at Amblin), but these are the only news concerning his next projects
    nice guy, by the way

As well liked as Neeson is, I still consider him underrated. And since Lincoln was born less than a hundred years after the birth of the U.S., I supppose by some wild stretch he might not be that far removed from European ancestry. Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln!

    by malaka105

I'm not going to knock Neeson, because he's incredible...but Day-Lewis is a far superior actor and hands down the best living actor. This would be a great role for him to dissolve into.... along with the fact that he could team up with Spielberg. Plus, Lewis actually looks a lot like Lincoln, unlike Neeson. Ever since I've heard of this project I've only pictured Day-Lewis in the role. Spielberg is still incredible but I'd like to see him work with some better actors and course correct him back to being one of the best.

The Earth is growing (all continents fit together on a smaller globe) the grand canyon is not erosion, but an opening, which closes ona deflated planet. The oceans form through steaming of the interior and also precipitation not only from evaportation (minimal) but from materials aquired from the sun as we tumble. Gravity has nothig to do with the planets 'pull' but from inertia as we spin and grow in all directions. The moon is growing too - thats what all that grey stuff is in amounst the white - new land. Impact craters are not impact craters at all but geological formed naturally. God is not real, only the existance of the living universe and all the components which make it up. and the best thing of all? the earth is a thin bubble - housing an interior forming star!" It was an obvious, but not inspired choice. Bryan Cox would have been inspired. This is kind of the same thing.. but I like the idea of Neeson more in this role because like Aslan, he will do a fine job, but I think the role of Lincoln needs to be played by a man who can be calm, evenhanded, and strong. That fits Neeson perfectly. All hell was breaking out around Lincoln, and he was kind of the calm in the middle of the storm. I think that Neeson is a great choice.

    Indy 4

    by fassbinder79

The new trailer looks worse than the last one (especially if you watched the first). Cutting out the last bit of dialogue when they are in the jeep shows how worried they are about certain scenes and how they playing in the trailers. And whether you agree or not about this film (Indy 4) being any good...What is the deal with the major lighting inconsistencies (why has Kaminski put that weird bright sheen over that motorcycle scene with Indy and Shia?) I'm telling you Spielberg either shouldn't have pushed to make this film or they should have made it years ago right after Crusade. Its the wrong script, the wrong DP in my humble opinion and much of the acting appears to be scary bad. After seeing Iron Man (after all the overrated buzz) which I found very disappointing, and having watched Speed Racer (another travesty - Wachowski's should be doing a 2D animated Doc Frankenstein instead of their current crap)...It is beginning to look like the only hope we can have for the summer is Wall E and Dark Knight. The Spielberg film I am ironically most looking forward to is Tintin against my better judgement. Something tells me he might actually pull that film off even though I think it should have been 2D instead of mo-cap. But Zemeckis made leaps and bounds that technology with Beowulf coming from the ass that was Polar Express...And I think Jackson and SS together makes for a decent combo. But Lincoln will probably be like Amistad and most of Spielberg's movies lately...One really amazing sequence (i.e. normandy scene in SPR, slave ship scene in Amistad etc) in an otherwise flawed movie. None of Spielberg's recent films has worked as a whole for me. The last truly great Spielberg film was Schindler's List. His last truly great popcorn film was probably Jurassic Park.

    Color corrected

    by samuel fulmer

totally agree. Of course it's always hard to tell weather Kaminski or Spielberg is to blame. I think maybe after Kubrick's death, Spielber took Kubrick's penchant for color correction to the extreme, and his films mostly have that look where all the color has been sucked out of them. I think it worked for films like Minority Report and Private Ryan, but not for the other films of the Kaminski/Spielberg collaboration. It's almost like the cinematography makes the films look cheap or fake.

I wasn't saying that they had done color correction I was trying to say that Kaminski shooting style makes it look like a lot of color correction has been done. And I would also add that filmmakers are going to have to be careful about going too crazy with the color correction particularly on darkly lit or night scenes from now on in the age of bluray and hd-dvd. Just recently became a proud owner of both technologies and I can tell you that it makes a huge difference on the picture quality of the film. 300 on hd-dvd for example looked pretty awful because of oversaturation.

Despite what many say, I think Spielberg is doing some of his most interesting work in recent years.

Although I miss the old Spilberg... the JAWS and CEOT3K and ROTLA... I do like his less accessible work, some of which were not fan faves, but popular with critics... AI, MUNICH, WOTW... Curious to see what type of film IJ4 is.

    Young Mr Lincoln...

    by mr gorilla

...was a brilliant film. Difficult to top. That being said, MUNICH was terrific, although it would be amazing to see a 'serious' Spielberg film that didn't rely on shocking violence to get you into a 'serious' mood. (Although, of course, the subject matter of Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan and Munich does justify having violent scenes. And Spielberg 'does' violence very, very well.)

    Munich???

    by series7

I don't understand all the love for that movie? Maybe because I saw it too close to Schindlers list. I just thought it was terrible. Daniel Craig and Eric Bana (a Comedian mind you, has never once proven himself as a dramatic actor I don't know why he keeps getting those parts) are both jews? The movie was boring and didn't go anywhere. Eric Bana has about the emotional depth of a Carlos Mencia skit. Plus I had also seen One Day in September within the past year, which was a much better movie. Sometimes it pays to know less about the events I guess?

    My thoughts on Munich

    by samuel fulmer

I thought it was kind of average. The thriller aspect of it worked, but I felt that the more drama oriented scenes fell flat (especially that pretentious sex scene at the end). My vote for best Spielberg film of this decade would go to Catch Me If You Can (which was a bit overlong, but a lot more consistent than his other recent films).

Any word on the quasi follow up to his Lincoln movie? It was suppost to be based off the book Manhunt by James L. Swanson about the manhunt for Booth with Harrison Ford possibly playing the lead general on the hunt? Anyone hear anything about it? It was back when Spielbergs Lincoln movie was first announced so it's been awhile.

spielberg is a SHILL and SELLOUT

    by shogunshin

i used to love his movies, until i realized what a sellout spielberg is. i love how he goes on a rant about the chinese should 'end the continuing human suffering there...' the communist regime in china will soon topple, without the aid of the mighty spielberg. i also LOVE how spielberg completely IGNORES the APARTHEID in PALESTINE right now. i guess spielberg does not consider 'continuing human suffering' for the Palesinean people. Bring PEACE to PALESTINE, and equality for ALL living there, and the world will be a better place. Spielberg would be better off listening to these brave RABBIS, than listening to his rich elite media partners. http://www.nkusa.org/ bring PEACE to PALESTINE

    by samuel fulmer

I don't know what happened to that. I can't remember who was attached to direct, but Harrison Ford was supposed to star in it. Honestly, Spielberg directing Ford in Manhunt would be a lot more intesting than what might turn out to be another boring history lesson told by Grandpa Steve (a la Amistad).

    by trash basura

As most of you might know...Mr. Spielberg was chomping at the bit to direct a Bond film. He did Raiders instead. I wonder now that Bond is back in a more elite "light" would he still want to direct one. I am not at all interested in TinTin or the Chicago protest film or Lincoln...but, I would be dead keen on seeing what he could do on a Bond film! Since he worked with Daniel Craig on Munich...I think the rapport would be terrific. Then after he could direct the Ghost on the Shell he has in his pocket. The time is right for the heavy hitting anime to go toe to toe with the Transformers & Iron Man and beat James Cameron to the punch. I wanna see Spielberg direct the hell of of something to re-establish himself as the best director out there...

In my village everyone knows Aberaham Lincolns. It is a great thing that you do in honouring this man with a film. Like Forrest Gump he knew that a black man should not be forced into slavery, unlike Forest Gump, he was shot behind the ear. In my village we celebrate Abereham Day every year. everyone dresses up in beards, top hats, and smoke cigars and drinks brandy. I hope when the film comes out Mr Lincolns family will not ruin everything by protesting as did the family of Dan Shanks.

Spielberg did direct Ford in ET... Although his part was cut from the final film... only Ford's hand is seen when he puts it on Henry Thomas' shoulder after Elliot releases all of the frogs in biology class. the ONLY time he managed to distance himself from his own voice was "next of kin" only the issue there is that the stereo-typical 'hillbilly' accent in the US is a product of Irish and Scottish immigration, so it wasn't exactly a stretch for him.

We build up with the story about how Lincoln and Booth are like opposite sides of the same coin or whatever, and lead to their showdown. Speilberg stayed very true to the Kubrickian vision of the story in A.I. Anyone who thinks it has a tacked-on feel-good ending is missing the point. It's a brutal, sad, ending. This poor sentient being, who will never be 'human' ends up trapped in his own delusions. The A.I's at the end take pity on the little robot and allow him one last sweet memory... One he will re-live over and over, clinging to like we cling to the idea of God. To me, that fate is as horrible as being trapped in the ice for eons. A.I. is a much deeper film than people give it credit for. Look beneath the surface, it's a very brutal examination of why artificial intelligence will never be human.

leave in how "The Great Emancipator" was originally dead-set against the idea of abolition of slavery; how he pointedly stumped against the possibility in early debates? How he investigated creating a new colony for freed slaves once the Civil War was over ("Your race suffers, greatly, many of them, by living among us, while ours suffers from your presence" John Franklin: "From Slavery to Freedom" NY 1967. Richard Zacks: "Underground Education" NY 1997)? How the noble Emancipation Proclimation applied only to slaves in the Confederacy (which most of those states chose to ignore) and not the slave-holding states of the Union (Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri)?
