Mixed Reviews For The Doctor’s Daughter!! WHO 30.6 Hits The U.K.!!

Published at:  May 10, 2008 6:34:48 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Doctor Dan” says:

DOCTOR WHO 4.6 – "The Doctor's Daughter"

Writer: Stephen Greenhorn
Director: Alice Troughton

Cast: David Tennant (The Doctor), Catherine Tate (Donna Noble), Georgia Moffett (Jenny), Nigel Terry (Cobb), Joe Dempsie (Cline), Paul Kasey (Hath Peck), Ruari Mears (Hath Gable), Akin Gazi (Carter) & Olalekan Lawal Jr (Soldier)

After arriving on the planet Messaline, Martha is kidnapped by militaristic fish-like humanoids called the Hath, and The Doctor meets a young woman with a close connection to him...

Can you smell the oestrogen? The Doctor (David Tennant) is joined by three female companions this week, as the TARDIS whisks him to the planet Messaline with Martha (Freema Agyeman) and Donna (Catherine Tate), only to be forcibly used as the blueprint for a genetically-created "daughter" who comes to be known as Jenny (Georgia Moffett). And that all happens in the teaser!

To be honest, this episode was a bit too hectic for its own good, but the breathless pace and some enjoyable moments eventually dovetailed in a decent climax. The Doctor discovers that the people of Messaline have been engaged in a generations-long battle with fish-humanoid enemy The Hath (trout-headed men with green optics bolted into their mouths). As a pacifist, The Doctor tries to end the pointless war that's been raging beneath the planet's surface (in a web of tunnels snaking out from a theatre), as it's lost all meaning and both sides refuse to back down -- out of stubbornness and a misplaced sense of tradition. The situation isn't helped by the fact both sides have access to high-tech equipment ("progenation machines") that can create a stream of battle-ready soldiers, so there's little chance of one side losing through mass fatalities...

Inevitably, Martha gets separated from everyone but befriends a Hath (by helping with its dislocated shoulder) and earns their species' trust. The creatures only talk in a flurry of bubbles, although Martha apparently has their language translated by the TARDIS (we just don't have any subtitles as the viewers). I think writer Stephen Greenhorn missed a trick in avoiding an Enemy Mine overtone to the Martha/Hath interplay, but perhaps it would have just been too difficult to pull off in 45-minutes...

Besides, it's not long before The Doctor, Donna and Jenny accidentally help both sides realize there's a mythical "Source" in a hidden network of tunnels. Both societies have a Creationist myth about how they came to be, and The Doctor seems to have been instrumental in leading them toward this "divine knowledge". So the hunt is on, with the humans, led by Cobb (Nigel Terry), chasing after The Doctor, Donna and Jenny through a labyrinth of new tunnels, as Martha leads her befriended Hath to the Source across the dark, windswept planet's surface...

The Doctor's Daughter is something of a typical episode. My first impression of everything wasn't good; with the set-up and sketchily-drawn characters quickly preparing me for a bog-standard cost-cutting adventure. That said, it was impossible not to be swept along by everything, and Greenhorn's story soon started showing signs of texture and intelligence...

As the titular Doctor's daughter, Jenny is pure delight. Georgia Moffett's obviously lovely to look at, but she's also great fun. Issue of parental responsibility are tackled, as The Doctor is initially dismissive of Jenny as nothing but a genetic creation, not a true child – until he hears her dual-heartbeat. For all the swagger about war and some mystical overtones, this episode is at its best when dealing with The Doctor's burgeoning affection for his offspring. Jenny was introduced in a split-second (irritatingly), but her relationship with her "dad" evolves very nicely, brilliantly stirred along by a more thoughtful Donna's comments.

Yes, Catherine Tate's very good here; acting as a decent counterbalance to The Doctor in his turmoil over being lumbered with parenthood. There are a few "comedy bits" that Tate once again lurches into ("GI Jane!"), but for the most part I liked her interactions and she even outsmarts The Doctor in resolving the mystery about the Source (using knowledge gleamed from a "temp job" again, amusingly.)

On the flipside, poor Freema Agyeman finds herself in another three-episode stint where she was only required for one (see season 2 of Torchwood.) I loved her enthusiasm and quick-thinking last season, but it's clear now that she's a character who's run her course. This episode gives her a subplot that acts as a balance (by showing things from "the enemy" perspective), but ultimately she's surplus to requirement. And you just can't imagine Martha Jones giving The Doctor a pep talk on being a good dad, can you? She's too young, really. Donna's maturity has its downsides on the show, but she's better placed to tackle The Doctor on weightier issues. If we do see Martha Jones again, fine -- I like her. But I'm not leading signing a petition to get her re-instated for season 5, sorry...

David Tennant doesn't get the same quality of witty remarks and quips under Greenhorn's pen, but he's brilliant at the emotional stuff with Jenny. His unease over her creation, then grudging fondness, followed by excitement about having a daughter accompany him on adventures, was handled superbly. I particularly liked how Jenny seemed to rise above her war-like "programming" to become more like her father, when she decided not to kill their pursuers. SPOILERS BEGIN. The eventual demise of Jenny perhaps shouldn't have worked (as we'd only spent 40-minutes in her company), but thanks to Moffett and Tennant's skills, they pulled her death scene off well. I was priming myself to begin a Sally Sparrow-like campaign to get Jenny reinstated on the show, so when she was joyously resurrected and blasted off into space in her own space-ship (bound for a spin-off adventure of her own?) I had to grin. Wonderful! I can't wait to see her again. SPOILERS END.

Overall, The Doctor's Daughter was an episode with a relatively unexciting premise, rescued by a late-twist that put everything into a fresh perspective. But the real pleasure of the episode came not from the extraneous Martha, the wasted Hath, or the humdrum premise (too much running down corridors this week), but the simple pleasure in seeing The Doctor interact with his child. It was Tennant's touching performance, and the doe-eyed charms of sexy Georgia Moffett doing somersaults down a corridor of laser-beams, that ensured this adventure's success...

The Good

1. David Tennant (less witty than usual as The Doctor, but excellent when called upon to handle the weight of parenthood). Catherine Tate (improving every week -- just drop the lock-jawed outbursts, please?) and the delectable Georgia Moffett. Forget Sarah Jane Adventures – I think every kid (and plenty of men) want to see where Jenny goes in her rocket.

2. The eventual twist and explanation for the human/Hath conflict was inventive and certainly helped gloss over a slightly dull premise.

3. Some great alien world landscapes, once we broke out of the identikit corridors.

The Bad

1. Freema Agyeman. She did her best, but Martha was wasted and her presence just unbalances everything. And the less said about the silly "quicksand" moment, the better. Was anyone else contemplating screaming "Atreyuuuu!" at the screen?

2. All of the supporting players were blander than bland this week. Nigel Terry deserved better, if only for the brave decision to have a villain use a West Country accent.

3. It wasn't bad, really, but the basic storyline was a bit forgettable and disposable. If it wasn't for the late-twist about the human/Hath history together, I'd have been more upset.

4. The Hath. A silly fishy-design, that also meant they never talked. I know the characters could understand their bubbly noise, but it's a shame Who's budget can't stretch to animatronic mouths (see also: The Face Of Boe, The Ood, Torchwood's Weevils, etc). The Hath looked like actors in boiler suits with rubber heads on. More so than usual, I mean.

The Geeky

1. In the season 2 episode Fear Her, The Doctor mentioned he "was a dad once".

2. The only member of The Doctor's family seen in the series before was his granddaughter Susan Foreman, who last appeared in The Five Doctors. The Eighth Doctor adopted a daughter called Miranda in a range of novels by author Lance Parkin, but it's debatable if these are show canon.

3. Georgia Moffett (Jenny) is the real-life daughter of actors Peter Davison (who played the Fifth Doctor) and Sandra Dickinson (who played Trillian in The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy TV series.) The reason her surname is Moffett is that Davison is the stage-name of her father.

4. Moffett starred opposite her father's incarnation of the Time Lord in the Big Finish audio story Red Dawn. She also auditioned for the role of Rose Tyler that eventually went to Billie Piper.

5. All the Hath dialogue was fully scripted, just not subtitled. They included a mild bit of profanity!

6. Jenny's acrobatics through the corridor of deadly laser-beams was inspired by Britney Spears' "Toxic" music video.

7. At one point Donna asks what a female Time Lord is called, but The Doctor doesn't respond. The answer is: Time Lady. In the show we have seen Rodan (1978s The Invasion Of Time) and Romana (1978s The Ribos Operation.)

Rating: 3 / 5

“Seresecros” says:

Here’s a spoiler warning: “The Daughters Daughter” is perhaps the weakest episode of Doctor Who we’ve seen under Russell T. Davies’ command yet. From the contrived opening sequence through to the tacky battle sequences and spectacularly uninteresting plot, it goes nowhere for 40 minutes. After a quick bit of blather where Donna, Martha and the Doctor deliver some standard lines about how shocking it is that the Tardis has gone haywire, the thing lands in the middle of an underground tunnel in a world where a group of humans are fighting a group of fish monsters called the Hath. Why? Well, uh… oh look! The Doctor has a clone! Let’s focus on that instead.

Yes, the Doctor gets grabbed as soon as he lands and put into a DNA machine which looks strangely like the ones in Idiocracy, and a hatch duly opens and releases Jenny upon the world. Technically she’s the daughter of the Doctor, but instead of getting any exploration of this we instead get a lot of bickering and monologues instead. Practically the entire episode is made up of Donna saying “isn’t it amazing that you have a daughter?”, the Doctor denying that she’s really his daughter, and Jenny talking about how much she loves fighting. It gets tiring very very quickly, but the worst thing is that there’s really no need to her to exist at all. The fact she’s created from DNA provided by the Doctor is at no point relevant to the plot – she’s here for one episode, and then she sacrifices herself to save the Doctor. Anyone could have done that! Georgia Moffet is adorable, don't get me wrong, and you see her bring a sparky energy to her role, but the role is so underwritten and uninteresting that everything she does is overshadowed by the clunky plot device that introduces her.

There’s a lot of fighting in this episode between two groups. One group, the humans, are led by Nigel Terry, taking the “wooden plank” approach to leadership. Every line he delivers is flat and monotone, there’s no emotion or feeling behind any of his actions, meaning that when he turns ‘properly’ evil at the end, nobody is surprised. The plot is the barest of threads, and everything hangs off it limply. Speaking of, the giant fish creatures the hath are completely odd, the rubberest looking monsters we’ve seen since… the Autons, who were rubber by nature. Martha gets saddled with them for the B-plot after they kidnap her, and spends most of her time delivering exposition. When she finally gets round to doing something, it seems completely irrelevant and leads to the WORST MOMENT IN DR WHO HISTORY. A swamp is involved. You have to see it to believe it.

Neither of the B-plots eventually go anywhere, and we end up in a big room with all the characters together, as the Doctor gives a big speech about… something. It’s impossible to care about anyone involved here, and the contrivances that bring the plot to a head are just annoying. What’s worse is that writer Stephen Greenhorn’s take on the Doctor seems completely wrong. Instead of being fascinated by the machine which appears from nowhere and replicates a daughter from his DNA, he actively tries to disown her. It feels like a cheap way to distance the Doctor from the audience, and Tennant’s performance is anything but convincing. You can tell when he feels bored with the role, and here he has to deliver a lot of wooden dialogue which goes nowhere, and the desperation and annoyance in his eyes seems to come from Tennant instead of the Doctor. He’s as tired with the premise of the show as we are.

Not everything’s bad, although depending on your feelings about Catherine Tate this next statement may tell you everything you need to know about the ep: Donna is the best thing in it. Her character is smart and witty, and actually shows human emotions that anyone could relate to. Whereas Martha is crying her eyes out because a fish monster died (by drowning! WHAT?) and the humans are fighting because - wait, that was never really explained – Donna is trying to do something about the situation and fix things. She steps into the role of the main companion, and she brings some sense of gravity to proceedings. I know she gets a lot of stick online, but she’s the best thing for the series right now.

Every now and again Doctor Who fumbles an episode – oh Michelle Collins, where art thou – and this is a classic example. The plot makes no sense even in a sci-fi setting, the characterisations are wrong, everything about this episode is awful. And don’t even get me started on that bolted-on epilogue, which seems more like an excuse for another spin-off than anything else. This is a filler episode, but the writers don’t even have the courtesy to make it, at the very least, an entertaining bit of filler. The worst piece of TV I’ve seen in a long while.

Episode Rating: F.

Other Points of Interest:

How does Martha know about regeneration? She’s never seen one!

That scene where Jenny flips through the wire grid is even worse than it looked on the trailer. What was the point again?

At least Martha’s out of the picture, our of the Tardis. I still don’t understand why she needed to be in there in the first place.

Next week: A murder-mystery? With Agatha Christie! Golly…

“Kelvington” says:

In the first thirty seconds of the episode they explain how the Doctor has a daughter and it's more boring that you can imagine. The main thrust of the episode is the separation of Martha and the TARDIS from the Doctor. Seems we have a war between humans and half-fish half humans creatures. The humans are sort of extrapolated from each other, which is how the Doctor's daughter comes into being. (I said it was boring) As for the fish heads, they talk to each other by blowing bubbles in the face masks. Which oddly the TARDIS doesn't translate for Martha.

The crux of the story is there's a war between the fish heads and the humans, it's gone on for generations and they are looking for something called the MacGuffin... I mean the source. Which will help them wipe out the fish heads, after a heated debate the Doctor and Donna get locked up as both side start searching for the Source. In the mean time we get some introspection from The Doctor and his new daughter. Martha hatches a plan to get to the source before everyone else, by going out side, with one of her fishy friends. When the fish head dies in a sludge pool it's meant to be sad, but instead it's just awkward, it's one of the few times I would say Freema's acting wasn't on par.

As an episode it looks pretty but there's very little substance here, I wasn't impressed with either the story which is borrowed heavily from the Genesis device or look of the fish heads. The acting was fairly good, and Donna was kept on a pretty short leash here, but overall this is not my favorite episode. I think it has to do with the lack of mystery that surrounds the title character. With at title like "The Doctor's Daughter" I wanted something fantastic, something amazing, some mystery. Not, stick your hand in a machine and out pops a fully formed girl.

The ending and the end of The Doctor Daughter is contrived at best. While this is no "Love and Monsters" it's certainly not good.

Just my 2¢

“DJ Bollocks” says:

Tardis lands - Doctor processed by a bloke that looks like he didn't make the cut for McFly - and is if by magic Stars In Their Eyes style through the door a Daughter is created - "Hello Dad !"

Everyone attacked - explosions and Martha is captured - hair looks undamaged though - by some amphibian human hybrid with Lime slushies for mouths - The Hath - Martha makes fishy friends by undislocating a shoulder...

The "Generated Anomaly" becomes Jenny and the first discussion of the numbers that are attached to the ceilings and corridors...

and we're in what looks like the old ECW Arena where we meet General Cobb... wo apparantly rules the human roost...

Then we meet The Hath - Martha seems quite popular

They're underground, with apparently a long war having been fought between the humans and the Hath

"It's our inheritance it's what we know - How to fight and how to die..."

Some clunky dialogue about The Breath of Life, The Source and The Lost Temple - It's Like a Macho Dungeons & Dragons in here as maps are revealed...

A scene about whether the Doctor is a soldier or not as he gets some quality time with his 'daughter' as they are put in jail for being pacifists...

So The Hath and the Humans are both going to the Temple - "and to victory !"

She's got two hearts and then it becomes real to the Doctor.... More Time War reflection... and the comparisons... "then how are we different ?"

Martha tinkers with the ever expanding map...

Jenny is hot... in a Kristen Bell sandwich kinda way... Peter Davison's daughter doncha know...

A Get out of jail free mouse... And a Hathering Ram... *ahem*

There's a reason why they're not down on the surface and Martha finds out... 3 suns and a bit Transylvanian looking - Thankfully no Cheeky Girls...

The General finds out his prisoners have escaped...

More with the numbers... what could they mean ?

"That's not mood lighting is it...."

More numbers and more referencing of choices - The Sontarans had a choice too.... "When it comes to killing, there's always a choice.."

"Watch and learn father..."

Martha in Transylvania - into the gloop... Poor Freema seems to be getting all the messy jobs... Plastic fish apparently drowns and Martha really OD's on the death scene emotions...

Oh, this is is going to end unhappily...

Our troubled Doctor reflects on his previous kids... and the heartbreak and pain... Tears before bedtime anyone ?

More numbers and the temple approaces... Of course nothing is as it seems and it's a spaceship... They discover what appears to be a clock and the numbers situation is solved as they read the ships log...

"Two armies fighting a never ending war..."

"This war started 7 days ago..."

"They've mythologised their entire history..."

All the creating new soldiers had made them believe that they had been fighting for generations...

The Source is a Terraforming device (Third Generation) for making a world where Humans and the Hath could live together..

The Doctor unleashes the device and everyone lays down their weapons apart from the General who shoots Jenny....

Emotional death scene - more war is hell....

Time to go home as we drop Martha off...

"I'm going to travel with that man forever..." Oh the foreboding for Donna...

And Martha's story is wrapped up nicely....

Back to Jenny and we get the regeneration fx out of her mouth... is she going to change ? No ! But she's out in the temple/rocket exploring the universe - no doubt we'll see her again soon !

A good fun Doctor Who romp this week... nothing spectacular, a bit of fun, told a good story, ended Martha's tale (for now) some subtle foreboding of things to come albeit a crap alien and some clicheed War is Hell analogies....

Next week it's Agatha Christie in what already looks like a great BBC costume drama piece...

“Alex” says:

Okay I’m going to give a very brief review of this weeks Who. The story centres on The Doctor, Donna and Martha being brought to an alien planet (by the Tardis). On arrival the doctor is forced to put his hand into a strange device that creates “he Doctors Daughter”.

The Good:

Martha Jones – my favourite companion. Her emotional scene in this (with the Hath) is very well handled by Miss Ageyman

Donna Noble – Tate is great at playing The Doctors conscience.

Jenny – the Doctors Daughter played by Georgia Moffet. She’s seriously cute and I expect we’ll see her again soon (Season 5 companion???).

The Bad:

There are quite a few plot holes - if they’ve only been fighting for 7 days, then why is the general so old? Surely he was created within those 7 days as a teenager?

The Hath – I like the idea of them. But clearly they didn’t have a lot of FX budget left, nothing special here…

The story itself is nothing great and seems like a rehash of the last two episodes…

Martha Jones leaves…

Jenny’s death fails to resonate as you know she is doomed (we know she doesn’t end up with the doctor this series). Her resurrection then becomes obvious with the terrorforming…

….

Okay so not the greatest this series… but there’s some good character stuff here from Martha, Donna and Jenny. Can’t wait for Miss Jones to return later this series and let’s hope we haven’t seen the last of Jenny.

2.5/5

The Rani was another Time Lady. She was evil and rather campy. She was, in a round-about way, responsible for The Doctor's regeneration into his seventh incarnation.

    Worst episode of the series

    by lloytron

    This episode was pretty weak.

Why did they make such a big deal about the 3 of them being 'unmarked' and then only take a tissue sample from one of them?

Jenny gets shot and supposedly dies... well it looked like she got shot in the heart, and they already told you she had two!?

The Hath were part fish... so why didnt the friendly one survive the quicksand which was mostly water?!
the whole 7 days thing as well, I mean FFS, nice twist but pulled off badly.

    by sambrook

Some good acting from Tennant, especially when talking about the Time War and his family. Moffet was pretty good and Tate did well again this week. As someone who was dead set against her coming back she and the writers have proven me wrong. The twist regarding the length of the war made the plot a lot more interesting and the idea of Martha showing the other side of the battle was a good one that failed to pay off. So not a classic episode but far from awful. To me series 4 is the most consistent of the New Who - even this week's dip is no Love and Monsters, Daleks in Manhatten and it's at least as good as the series 1 average episodes.

    The death of Donna

    by antifanboy

Donna tells Martha, "I'm going to travel with the Doctor forever." Meanwhile, David Tennant tells the Radio Times, "The finale is going to be the saddest episode ever." And my initial suspicions they'd bring Rose back to the Doctor, only to kill her, were scuppered by the leaked reports about Billie Piper being in the Christmas special. So my money's on them killing off Donna in the finale. Today's episode was pretty good - I knew the fanboys would be upset they didn't turn it into a 1980s-style self-referential wank sesh when the Doctor's daughter didn't turn out to be Susan's mother (thereby requiring 45 minutes of David Tennant standing around explaining DW lore, to the orgasmic pleasure of people in the "Bring back the Rani!" camp).

I would have liked to seen something more than, put a member in a machine and poof you have a full grown daughter. I think there could have been a nice compromise, like she could have been drawn there by her own TARDIS, and been the off spring of a future incarnation. It would have worked equally well, and needed little explanation. Since it seems the Doctor's HAND and TARDIS took them there.Or better yet, not explain it at all and just when they are leaving, he realizes she is her daughter.I'm not a completely old school Doctor Who fan, but I was expecting more, since this series has been very good so far.

    Terraforming

    by supertoyslast

Oh, the plot holes. Why would they start building the city before terraforming the planet? No-one from the original crew survived for 7 days after landing? Two species on a mission of peace start to kill each other just because they lose the captain? The war only being 7 days old was a cool idea in a classic sci-fi short story kinda way, but ultimately failed to make any kind of sense in this context.Oh, and is Billie Piper really in the Christmas special? It's bad enough that Rose is being shoehorned back into the show after her character arc had been completed. Continuing into the Christmas special and, presumably, beyond would be too much. It's beginning to seem that RTD has fallen in love with his own lore in a fanboyish way. Having a showrunner who is a fanboy of his own work can only be bad for the show.

    by photoboy

It was brilliant on just about every count. Peter Davison's daughter was so adorable and fantastic she needs her own spin-off series right now. Freema showed once again that she's way better than Billie, and it's great to see how much she's learned to be like the Doctor. Tate was a little bit sidelined but even so she still managed to be great. And of course there were no references whatsoever to Billie coming back! So all in all, it was fucking brilliant.

Seriously, I can't see why anyone wouldn't like this episode.

That was all a bit "meh"...

    by spud mcspud

It was a bit prescient of Rose in "The Empty Child" to say she wanted the Doctor to "give me some Spock. Just once, give me some Spock!". Well, THE DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER did that in spades. Just the Spock storyline from the end of STAR TREK II: WRATH OF KHAN and the beginning of STAR TREK III: SEARCH FOR SPOCK. The only thing missing was for Jenny to say "The needs of the many... outweighed... the needs of the one... Uurghhhh!".

    Anywaaaay...

Good episode-ish, with a wildly varying Donna (I fucking hate when writers completely change the characters from episode to episode. This Donna is NOTHING like the Donna previously, and it's not due to character development either). Martha is wasted - AGAIN! - and proves that this show has no clue what to do with an intelligent female of a non-Caucasian persuasion. Why keep bringing Martha back when they do NOTHING with her? Why all the love for Queen of the Chavs Rose Tyler? Fucking kill Rose off and have done with her. Her story was doine by the end of Season 2.

The Hath were great, but glariong plothole ahoy: WHY DIDN'T THE TARDIS TRANSLATE?!?!? No reason given whatsoever, just to suit the story. A decent writer, or showrunner, would have spotted that logic snafu, but as with the Star Wars prequels, the answer to plot inconsistencies on new Who seems to be "fuck it, it's just kids sci-fi and therefore not worthy of decent plotting". Which is lazy, fucking delporable, and is the reason why the current team aren't fit to run new Who. It's like giving the keys to your family Roll-Royce to your inbred pet-fucking retarded cousin who lives in a tree house out in the sticks, and who thinks entertainment involves M-80s and frogs' arses.

you may have picked up from this that I wasn't madly impressed by this episode. You'd be right. Hope to see Jenny again - great character, very engaging, and Georgia is absolutely lovely - but to be honest, I'm starting to think the best thing would be for the Beeb to grow some fucking bollocks and kill the doctor off at the end of his 12th regeneration. It's painfully obvious they have fuck all idea what to do with him, since they're now rehashing old Star Trek movie plots for new Who eps. Dear oh dear...

Strabo: "RTD has become the George Lucas of Doctor Who. He's too busy writing his own fan-wankery for two-year-olds to actually do anything worthwhile with the series." Although this isn't a RTD ep, my sentiments exactly: we could have had some fantastic connections to the glorious decades-long backstory of Doctor Who, but no, bring out the manga chav AGAIN every fucking season. You know, 'cos the 11-year old girlies are the most important demographic for this landmark sci-fi series. There ARE other characters in the doctor's past before Rose, y'know.

Stick a fork in Dr Who: it's past done.

These reveiews seem to be arriving quicker and quicker.

    by davidaball

My general reaction of this episode is that it had some good moments and some bad. Could have been better. (Actually my opion on most of these episodes)
For a series that is meant to give out pacifict message there are an awful lot of gun battles. Yet again we have two waring sides fighting to the death and only the Doctor can sort them out. This setting does seem to come round with alarming regularity.

Actually the more I think about this episode the more the bad parts I start to remember.
Such as the Hath's faces having bubbling liquid wouldnt that be the first place you'd shoot?

The obvious let me walk close to you Doctor just before you get shot moment. Lazer beam corridor as Entrapment, Jay and silent bob strike back, etc. etc. etc.
Pointless inclusion of Martha. if they had cut those scenes then they might have more character and development for Jenny.

Anyone else thinking that if they base their society on a "A man who never would?" they're not going to have many ofspring.

I thought that was by far the best episode of a very underwhelming Dr Who season thus far! Tate and his 3 hos were great, and I liked the humans turning out to be the barstewards. Clever 7 day premise and naive little me didn't foresee Jenny coming back to life, and despite the heavily packed story, it was easy to follow despite my housemate's talking about the phone bill.

    by spud mcspud

Yep, they DID bring back Sarah-Jane Smith. But when you consider there were aliens (Adric), future time Lords (Romana) and cavewomen (Leela) in the past ranks of the Doctor's companions, it does look as if the creativity behind this show peaked with Tom Baker and Peter Davison and went downhill ever since.

    by tomdolan04

that regardless of the story this season, they seem to have a soundtrack blaring in the background for pretty much 99% of the episode. Even in the 'quiet' moments. Sad moment - full sad orchestral music. Running moment - loud uptempo music.

Agree in that it wasnt the greatest ep of new who, but my main issue is with the use of the daughter. It was a cheap emotional trick and his speech to her at the end was eye-rollingly bad. The hath weren't a bad enemy though.

It's a shame that it's off for a year next year bar the specials, but you'd like to hope the rest will do it good. Even a run like season one with Eccleston (which wasn't perfect) would be preferable. Who isn't about effects or grand spectacle - a story and a focus on the doctors perspective on the world drives the show. Backflipping Buffy-alikes aren't it.

Tennant is still great in the role, and even (as another pointed out) Donna/Tate outshone Martha this week by being written in a slightly more realistic light.

Make each episode a 2-perter FFS!!!

    by performingmonkey

Doctor Who continues to suffer from cramming a massive premise into one 45 minute episode. Thus everything feels half-assed with no character development. Look at the Pompeii episode, what was in it was great but it needed to be a LOT longer to give weight to proceedings. I think they should do the whole season as 2-part episodes with a 3-part finale. The Doctor's Daughter was good in many ways (Georgia Moffet, sexy, sparky, brilliant, bring her back very soon or face my wrath) bad in others (remind me why Martha was in this again? also, give the bad guy supporting character more than a couple of lines and we might give a shit). The big effects shot of the Messaline planet's surface made me pang for more, but there's simply not enough time in an episode. Btw that's why the daughter was created so quickly in the teaser.

    by dreamfasting

Ouch. This wasn't at all what I expected ... and so much the pity. I'm not sure if I've seen a script with such complete disconnect between all the subplots. Martha's presence, the war, the quasi-clone, the colony, the drama of the Tardis being wisked off ... all these elements but they don't interact at all. I can't completely hate it because you have this fantastic plucky young time lady and hints of the true sorrow the Doctor still struggles with. But it's all just tiny hints and echoes of what could have been done with the script ... the story they actually ended up with is just a painfully disjointed soup of B-plots and a far-far-far-too-blatant "put spinoff here" spin.

this ep really shows my frustration with the hour format

    by jccalhoun

this episode was a pretty good illustration of what I dislike about the hour long format of the current incarnation of the show. This was a mini world full of a pretty interesting back story of the tunnels and the clones and it was just rammed through so quickly. Back in the good old days this world would have gotten at least 90 minutes if not 2 hours. with the reveal of the tunnels, the Martha in jeopardy, and the reveal of the meaning of the numbers would have all easily been cliffhangers back in the day. I wish they would just let the episodes be as long as they needed to be rather than trying to fit into the hour format for the international market. Even the two parters tend to fall into a similar pacing problems This was a good episode with lots of good scifi ideas, something that has been all too lacking in this current incarnation, but there needed to be more room to expand on them more fully

    It was decent.

    by zerocorpse

I'd have preferred to see Jenny regenerate, but the half-regeneration sort of thing was satisfactory, I suppose.
The Hath couldn't be translated because they weren't speaking audibly. They were communicating with a bubble-code sort of speech. Just like the TARDIS coudn't translate sign language, it can't translate things like Morse code, and I suspect the Hath communication was based on the percussion and frequency of bubbles.
I can only assume the general was old because the first batch of people generated by the device was flawed, and weren't meant to live more than a couple weeks-- They were made with accelerated decrepitude. Either that, or he was made that way in the first place, just like the others were all different ages-- For some reason, the machine made an older person so as to seem authoritarian.

Martha was wasted, and the whole plot would've been served better being over two episodes. Of course, since more and more TV shows can't be bothered to do more than thirteen episodes they need to fit in as many stories as possible. Oh well. In the meantime, Georgia Moffett was great and Catherine Tate continues to impress. Overall I liked it, I just wanted more.

    by stile

It's a weak episode, especially compared to the unusually strong season so far. The plot is quite straightforward. We know from the start the Jenny is not going to survive, and then when they keep showing her corpse, we know she's going to survive. It doesn't make sense that she simply survives rather than regenerating (though it may be a learned skill rather than an innate ability). I didn't buy the bit about her blasting off into space to save the universe, but I did enjoy the character and hope that she'll be able to become a regular in the future.

Not a bad episode - it seemed fast paced to me, though I had the impression that Jenny wouldn't make it to the episode's end. Great to see her revived. So - are we going spin off series, or back as an recurring character ? Who knows - and he ain't telling.

If you ask me, every episode needs a cliffhanger.

    by seph_j

Even something as simple as at the end of 'Poison Sky' when the TARDIS goes nuts. You NEED a cliffhanger at the end of every episode. Why don't we get 4 part stories anymore? Is it because you'd only get three stories in a season that way? One-episode contained stories rarely work. Blink being the exception. A lot of the best stories so far, in my opinion, have been the two/three parters. Human Nature/Family Blood, Utopia/Drums/Time Lord, Impossible/Satan. Oh, and Doctors Daughter was hot, and good.... but Sally Sparrow is still a better developed character, with better potential for stories.
Sparrow and Nightingale for series 5! You know it makes sense.

Sloppy work but lots of foreshadow.

    by the reef

Episodes like this should not end up on screen. To set up a foreshadow of the daughter giving The Doctor her regenerations so he can go on living, the possible recurring character who will undoubtedly die in a noble (hoho) fashion seems too clumsy and contrived even for a kids TV show. If she can't die, is Jenny a potential squeeze for Captain Jack / Face of Boe? Also, why are there tons of weapons on a scientific teraforming project? Why is the general so old? Why is one of the zones (created in the last seven days) an abandoned theatre? Why are there cloning machines in the first place? How do you clone clothes and fish breathers? Why would the cloning machine program the copies for war? Why didn't the fish come back to life? Why are we watching a cheap copy of the Star Trek "Genesis" machine? I sat and sighed with every cheap reference and attempt to set up future arcs. Poorly done.

It's a review, I mean seriously what do you expect? I think most us on here do like Who and are frustrated that whilst it's always watchable its not as good as better episodes have suggested it could be. The gap and quality between the good ep's and bad ep's of Who is scarily inconsistent

The argument that 'ooh its not aimed at you so your daft for picking holes' is weak. A good well written story is a good well written story that moves beyond whatever audience or demographic they're aiming to flog toys to.

Agree with those who say that the potential was there in this ep for a decent two parter.

    Bwho-who

    by mulberry

One of those review sets which make me wonder if I saw the same episode as other people. Thought it was generally good, lots of nice ideas, good emotional moments, but a bit rushed and some elements a little clunky.

But it does now seem that, by not pandering to geekies, by consistently lying to them about future storylines in order to keep some sort of vague tension and surprise in the internet age, and by wanting to treat gayness as normal, there will always be a mob of anti-RTDs in any feedback. Boo hoo. By any measure, he has turned a failed husk of a franchise into one of the biggest landmarks in UK pop culture again. What have you achieved in the past 4 years?

But I do enjoy people claiming that similarly derivative plots from slightly older sci-fi have been stolen by Dr Who.

Main hate this time seems to be that they wanted a Hitch-hiker's guide to the Gallifrey episode and felt cheated with the progenation trick.

But also lots of people making odd claims of plot holes, which are either not holes as described, or are dealt with in the script.

"Why did they make such a big deal about the 3 of them being 'unmarked' and then only take a tissue sample from one of them? "
Probably related to the surprise attack by Hath immediately after they did the doctor, and then they didn't do any more as they were "pacifist stock" (that bit about pacifists in the eastern sector was lazy)

"Jenny gets shot and supposedly dies... well it looked like she got shot in the heart, and they already told you she had two!?"
I have two lungs, if I got shot through one of them I'd probably die.

"The Hath were part fish... so why didnt the friendly one survive the quicksand which was mostly water".
Try putting a goldfish in a bucket of gloopy mud. See how long it lasts. (doesn't explain how he could briefly stand up, move around and push Martha out)

"Why would they start building the city before terraforming the planet". Donna explains this later on - multitasking to allow fully formed buildings to be simply uncovered. How long does terraforming take anyway? You have to live somewhere.

"How does Martha know about regeneration? She’s never seen one!" She's been working for UNIT for a year. UNIT worked with several Doctors. And they keep notes.

Why is the less-than 7 day old general an old man? Well, why is Jenny a girly teenybopper? If I was manufacturing a general and had a machine which could generate people of any age, I would probably make him an older person.

What was the machine for - to create colonists.

Don't get the anti-sonic screwdriver stuff. Sometimes it is just lazy, but there was no real magic this time - he could have just fiddled with the maps to get them to work. No worse than Star Trek using scanners.

Surprised no-one has had a geek spaz about Nigel Terry doing the same cidrax accent he used as King Arthur in Boorman's Excalibur.

No regeneration - underlines both her similarities and difference to doctor, as well as the fact that there is more than genetics to being a time lord (also means they can get some totty with a lovely smile back again).

The doctor's explanation of the TARDIS acting up due to a paradox made no sense. But we know Rose was involved (does he?). Were all the references to a female creator and breath of life just misdirection?

The writers are taking lots of opportunity this season (particularly with Donna) to introduce reality checks, self-referential nods and challenge Who conventions (lots of stuff this week about running up and down corridors), which does need to be done lightly.

Have got really paranoid about how perceptive Donna is - just keep getting drawn to that big ring she is wearing.

But yes, Martha in the swamp was piss-poor,and the 1 week time line was a bit hokey. A month or a year would have been better.

Was also confused as to how much Martha could understand the Hath.

But Jenny's lovely big smile before the credits could redeem even the worst episode.

I spy a writer who went to art college. I agree with all of you who say this story would have been better as a two-parter, and that it would be great to have more two-parters in general. Often the stories do feel too rushed. Whereas something like "Family Of Blood/Human Nature" was brilliant because the story had plenty of room to breathe. Not only that but cliffhangers are cool.

    Very average episode.

    by gabba-uk

Donna was actually (shock horror) begining to slightly go up in my estimation but then she did that awful 'Ohhh mmyyyy Goddddd' thing, reminded me that it was Catherine Tate and her stock dropped quicker than a sub prime lender!!! The created daughter thing was really cheap. Too much effort to write to think of proper backstory to how the Doctor was young, stupid and screwing every Time Lady on Gallerfry I guess. Really liked Georgina Moffet who played her (didn't hurt that she really cute in a sweet wholesome girl next door way) Hope we see her again but as a full Time Lady. I think the Doctor has earned the right to gain a family again. But once again a very 'meh' episode. Looking foreword to next weeks one with Agatha Christie. Who always seems to work best when he meets historical figures.

    So very ho hum.

    by the true priapic

I getting tired of this myself.I really don't want to keep kicking it but Who really is firing on absolutely no thrusters this series.Yet another pointless, forgettable episode which rehashed the oldest cliches known and mixed them in with scenes that were even complete retreads of Tennants previous Who's.I'm so very fucking tired of this now.Ever since that dreadful Christmas special I have known in my own heart that Who had ended for me.I genuinely keep watching because of Tennant, the hope of Moffat stories, seeing old baddies return and Tennant.Certainly, now the theme tune has been revamped from the trad scary ominous sounds to a rocky fun adventure 'tune' it has continued to be so very ho hum every week. The holes in this were absolutely terrible writing...c'mon!!No excuse at all at this level of play.Tennant reliving his Master/death performance was boring and Jenny jetting off was so childish as to make you squint in pain at the daftness of it all.Martha crying for her lost bluefish was just downright strange.Donna continues to walk around and spout wholesome twaddle like "I worked in a bakery once as a temp for two days!I can (insert solution to episode here)" and smile dreamily into the camera whispering " I'm going to be with him FOREVER!"May as well put in yet ANOTHER piece of theme music to hammer home the obvious tragedy on the horizon(She doesn't die though...sorry.)Oh,yeah...the theme music....incredibly this year has just reused old theme music to the extent of just bastardising the 2 cd's available. No new themes this year,eh?Fuck buying the third soundtrack from Who....................So...to be honest, arguing that its made for kids/just sit back and enjoy is the kind of wishy washy attitude that got Who nailed in the first place!Say all you want about trolling but by God,why come to a site where a talkback is a form of criticism to just spout endless pleasantries and not even be able to analyse anything you've just sat through?Strange......Next week?God,that Agatha Christie was fucking ugly,eh?And...er,run that by us again Doctor. Why did the Tardis take you to Jenny's planet?Eh?I ....don't understand. That's .....rubbish.................I honestly wonder whether Garth Merenghi is writing this shit now.Attack of the Giant Wasps?

    by antifanboy

That was a good, balanced review. It does seem like AICN just tend to pick reviews that have polarised opinions. I see ratings were up this week, despite the hot weather: over 6.5 million viewers, but more importantly, almost 40% of everyone watching TV at the time.

    The Doctor's Daughter

    by carefulsilly

Well, what on earth was that all about? I was very confused by the war only lasting a week. Why was everything old and knackered then? Why were they in a battered old theatre? You terraform a planet and first thing you do is build a theatre! Totally written by a playwright! But I did enjoy Jenny, thought she was lovely and she has Peter's smile. Lovely. So maybe we will be seeing more of her, though I doubt they wrote it with that in mind.

I was yet again rather taken with Donna Noble, who to me is a total breath of fresh air. I do hope the 'wiping her memory' stories I'm hearing are not true. Shame she isn't sticking around. Is it definite that Rose is in the Christmas Special?

    I don't think that was a regeneration

    by dreamfasting

Just a quick comment about the ending - she was still only a few hours into her new life, so I think the point of all the hand references was to point out that like the doctor's hand a few hours into his regeneration, she apparently regrew a new heart. However, given how monumental an event this would seem to be in the grand canon of Doctor Who, it all happened rather hastily and inepicly (to coin a term).

... it was a great episode, of course it's not perfect, Who doesn't have the advantage of having a team of writers on each episode, but it hit all the required buttons: pathos, fun dialogue, good acting (even from Freema who is average most of the time), and the story had subtext. Hi Guys! Thought I'd throw my weight behind another great episode. I have only been on a voyage with the DR since my cousin brought me back the vcr from England and man am I hooked! Another great story of Doctor Who, Martha, Doctor Who's daughter and Donna - my papa calls her ginger-pubes (he's crazy too!). Once again I have picked up a few geeky bits that no one else notices. 1. Doctor Who uses the same lightsabre that he used last week. This is reference to the Star Wars series of films. 2. Doctor who begins with a D, Donna begins with a D, Dalek begins with a D, and Dan Shanks begins with a D (is Dan Shanks being lined up to play Doctor Who?) 3. Doctor Who actually wanted to shoot that bastard in behind his ear but his goodness would not allow it. Hope everyone now notices.

    by cedar_room

is that because Georgia Moffett is the sexiest little minx ever seen on TV? Possibly, but certainly with her in it how can this episode be labelled BAD? And we had Martha's ARSE!! The swamp bit was obviously shit, but in general I liked it. Always like the stuff that touches on the Doctor's back story, and we had lots of that here. Will be sad to see Martha's arse leave, but not necessarily the rest of her (she's done). Donna is getting better, and I am amazed that its looking like she might be a good companion as I was a vowed Tater. Not sure if Jenny will get a spin off series (surely we have enough of them already) but she MUST return, and if RTD insists on gayness in every Dr Who series these days how about some Jenny and Sally Sparrow action?? by crichtonastronut

liked the Martha sublot too. For an explanation on drowing fish, see Rygel's explanation on I, ET. "Anphimbious--That's water not mud. Mud Grabs yah, mud holds yah. You want to know about mud, I know mud." "Guy knows mud."

And I think it's totally appropriate to her character that she felt so bad about his death. She's as deeply invested in saving lives as the Doctor and she takesd it hard when it doesn't work out. That's completely consistent with the character from her introduction last season. Also th bit where they were all sniffing her and her reaction was priceless. funny. I do agree this kind of multi plotted story would have been better surved in the old two hour format. One other complaint I have, is an the Doctor please not have another spontaneous soldiers suck rant. It was off putting in the Sontaran Strategem and it's even more so here. It's like he's developed political terrets. And considering how quickly his rants are getting shot down, you hve to wonder what the writer are on about and what their really trying to say. It just seems off character and wierd.

All the problems with this episode could have been sorted byt 2 things
    1. A little bit more though egstretch the war to 6 motnhs, 7 days was silly
    2. Give it a second part and let the ideas breathe, it felt so rushed!

Actually I would have made it 4 half hour episodes. At first i liek the change in style but I think the show is hampered by it's current format. I think they need the old style where they can easier adjust the story arch length to suit the storyline rather than cramming most into 45 minutes.

Well, the last time that happened with Who we got the McGann TV movie. PROS: Great TARDIS interiors, McGann was fantastic, Grace was an okay companion, and I actually LIKED Eric roberts' Master. He does menacing evil very well, I think. CONS: Car chase! Kisses his companion! Fucking action sequences?!?!?

You'll notice, all the things I just complained about - and thousands of Who fans complained about back in the day when the movie came out - are now staples of RTD's new Who. Proving that (a) all his best ideas are actually other people's, and (b) we Who fans are a bunch of fickle bitches, and what we hated yesterday, we'll love tomorrow.
