CLONE WARS trailer hits in HD Quicktime!!!

Published at:  May 09, 2008 3:56:57 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... As I was watching CNN HD last night - as Lou Dobbs went to commercial - suddenly a green MPAA trailer screen filled as a voice said, "And now an exclusive look at the new STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS trailer" -- And I watched this trailer and felt glee... You know - the modern Star Wars trilogy - which I did enjoy... but I was always conflicted by the CG... it felt like it wanted to be a cartoon. It seemed that George, honestly, was wanting to have absolute visual control... and that really does work best in the animated format. Watching this trailer - I feel giddy. Giddy, because I get to see an animated STAR WARS cartoon theatrically... and it signals a long running animated series that will be in our lives soon enough. How outstanding is that!?!? Click below to check this new Theatrical Trailer!!!

Wow. There really is a new Star Wars movie coming.

    by greenstyle92

Looks like we're getting a clone wars movie after all, not just that "starts at the end of ep 2 and ends with ep 3" thing. Hey, should AICN host a new Jedi Council meeting to discuss this and other matters? Like where the 6 movie boxed set is? (I still say Moriarty complaining about the unaltered version discs and telling everyone to wait for the 6 film set is what made Lucas delay it.)

    by kasch

Sheesh, you would think Lucas was George Bush or something. People still can't get over Phantom Menace sucking, so they have to make him the whipping boy for everything. Forget the fact that he made THX 1138, American Graffiti, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, and Revenge of the Sith (which was good, no matter how many people bitch). Everything he touches turns to shit, right?

I'm sure Indy IV is great, it's all on Spielberg...but if it sucks, it's Lucas' fault. Just you wait.

Although the prequels didn´t really got to me I still love Star Wars. I was 6 when it got out in ´77 and I had the chance to see it in USA while on vacation I remember that after the movie my dad took me to a store (probably JCPenny) and bought me the Kenner figures of C-3PO, Luke X-Wing Fighter, Darth Vader, Han, Chewie, R2, a Stormtrooper and an X-Wing. I had a difficult time trying to explain my friends in México who the action figures I had were supposed to be since the movie didn´t screened in México until 3 months later.

    Good ol times!!! (sigh)

Anyway, any Star Wars news is good news and this one is specially cool news.

    Tattooine is still backwater...

    by lazarus long

So what if it's in most of the films? The main fucking character of each trilogy is FROM there. is that a coincidence? The prequels are about a slave boy from a small planet who becomes a Jedi and then an evil overlord. The OT is about that guy's son, who ALSO grew up on the same planet because THAT'S WHERE THE FUCKING FAMILY IS FROM. If you want to complain about Tattooine featuring too prominently, it's because they stationed Jabba's Palace there in Jedi, which certainly makes the planet less obscure. So the problem isn't with the prequels, it's with Episode VI, assholes.

That actually looked better than AOTC. Why do I get the feeling that this is the Movie we should have gotten for Episode II instead.

My main gripe would is I just wish Lucas would advance the story a little. We all know what happened after the fall of the republic. who cares about the Clone Wars, when we know how it goes down. Move it beyond the Galactic Republic or Empire setting. Either into the future (Luke rebuilding the Jedi Order) or the past (KOTOR is perhaps the best Star Wars related story told outside of the Originals. These stories would make a great animated transition.

This Should have Been Ep. I, II and III

    by hoorayforeric

This was how I envisioned what the clone wars would have been and Episode should have been the beginnings of this war with Anakin older, around the same age as in Episode II. This series could have been a great movie or movies had Lucas gone this route. It looks like he's making these because this story is beginning to open up to him...but too late. Ep.III's last hour was incredible...although I liked Ep.II and some of Ep.I..I feel that this is the way it should have played throughout...there's many other ways to seduce Anakin and allow him to love Padme in order the twins be born.

I also think that Shadows of the Empire was a great book...since it's based on the orig. trilogy characters...why not make a CGI version of that book??! by anakin whoopass

Lucasfilm is making a big mistake releasing this TV pilot theatrically. The animation is not feature quality and not even up to what we see in Grand Theft Auto IV. Used to be you could count on Star Wars to be cutting-edge technically if nothing else. The Clone Wars is probably not going to be a financial failure but only because they spent no where close to the budget of a real Star Wars movie on it.

    The prequels need re-releases

    by performingmonkey

Yeah I know it's coming but it's desperately needed IMO. TPM needs its color palette messed with, toning down those computer game green fields at the end Naboo battle and making the armies and space battle look more realistic. Cut some of young Anakin's more horrible lines. Fucking hell I would say cut him completely but sadly you can't! The podrace sequence doesn't need altering, it's still a pure gold bar of effects madness and mayhem way ahead of its time - that and the Qui-Gon/Obi/Maul fight are the only exciting sequences in all three prequels IMO. AOTC and ROTS are ass, but ass that CAN be improved upon.

Lucas fall from grace in 10 short years

    by romanocc

I am not a Prequel hater, but has anyone seen a director fall from grace from his fans anymore then George Lucas in the last 10 years? Before 1997, if you asked the majority of SW fans, they would have said he was a God, as he was the leader of our religion, to speak metaphorically. Now you hear comments about him being a bad writer, a crappy director, and man obsessed with CGI. I am not saying this is all fair, but the Prequels didn't live up to what they could have been, and George Lucas was icon to SW fans before 1997, now you have a part of the fanbase that defends everything he does, another part that is skeptical about getting burned again, and then another part that utterly hates the guy. Do you think he would hitch a ride with Marty McFly and take that Delorean back to the 1996 and just do something else then SW? He would probably still be a God to about 99% of SW fans.

I have to say even Frank Oz himself sounded a lot older in the prequels but then again he is a lot older so doing a Yoda that sounds like Empire or younger would have been almost impossible for Oz to do. But I can do it and I've heard other guys' Yoda voice done a lot better than this. Maybe I should send Lucasfilm a demo tape, seriously....

Looks like cool, good fun. Messes with continuity, it seems, but I'm counting it as sort of a side "spin-off" story that doesn't have alot of bearing on the live action films. That in mind, it'll be fun to see SW back on the big screen. And come off it: The PT isn't that bad. It's not the OT, but it's pretty good and has several moments of greatness. ROTS in particular as a success with critics and fans (2 peoples choice awards for Best Picture and Best Drama) is awesome and that isn't really arguable unless you've got some bone to pick with GL. Aotc is pretty good, an 8/10 I thin, and TPM has actually grown on me to 8.5/10.I'd actually say that ROTJ is the weakest film. I just always skip to the last 45 minutes of it. (which are fantastic, though)These are just my opinions of course...

    by harryblackpotter

He said after Return of the Jedi, Han Solo sold him to the Hutts where he works as a pit-fighter for scraps of meat. He also said that Lando came to watch him at one of the fights. Chewie thought he was going to rescue him, but instead he was there to gamble and even bet against the wookie. The Hutts even make him perform tricks like a Russian bear. Luke Skywalker is far too busy building his Jedi empire to involve himself in the wookie's plight so asked if we can launch a world-wide campaign to highlight the barbaric treatment of wookies. At least that's what I thought he said but since I don't speak wookie, he could have been complaining that he took a shit and now it's stuck to his fur.

I'm glad so many of you don't like it.

    by zerocorpse

That means I won't have to fight for a good seat in the theater.
Rescuing Jabba's son makes perfect sense. The Hutts are powerful, and their position in the Clone Wars was (as far as I remember from EU material) somewhat standoffish and neutral (they tend to keep out of the politics of wars, and stick with the profiteering.)

Jabba's a powerful being. He's practically in retirement by Episode VI (thanks to Palpatine's policies on non-humans), but during the Clone Wars he was one of the most important members of his race. Rescuing his son would earn his favor, and possibly gain his financial support-- Or at least prevent him from financially supporting the other side.
I do have one gripe, and that is that the Yoda voice is pretty low quality. There are better Yoda impressionists out there, so I fail to see how this guy got the role in a fair audition. Hell, the video games have had better Yodas. This guy sounds more like the Yoda-like character in Knights of the Old Republic.
Anyway, as to the whole "George Lucas Hate" thing, I think it's just cool for the younger generation to hate on him because it makes them feel rebellious. Face it, guys: Star Wars is not a Gen Y thing. Honestly, I think the love for it ends with the last of Gen X, and it begins with the last of the Baby Boomers. Anyone younger than Gen X will naturally rebel against what we love, because it's in the nature of any generation to reject the culture of the previous generation (or three).
And then of course you have the older people who just reject Star Wars because it's "nerdy" and they're trying to distance themselves from it to save face with their office-mates, family, or friends. "No, I don't like that Star Wars crap. It's dorky. I like football and American Idol instead!"
Whatever guys. Either way, please DON'T come to see it in the theater. It will be nice not to have you lameoids in line, or making noise in the theater. You just go right on ahead and see the "Sex and the City" movie with your girlfriend who thinks Star Wars is geeky. Enjoy.
(and yes, Star Wars fans have girlfriends and wives. Sometimes, they are even Star Wars fans themselves.)

    by darthvedder81

It's fine to dislike what GL has done with "Star Wars". What I object to is all the hate directed towards the man. People at best act like GL can't do what he wants to with his stories (which is silly) or at worst they treat him like he's a nazi war criminal or a pedophile. I may find Frank Darabont to be a horrible filmmaker whose movies make me angry and annoyed but I don't feel the need to call him a worthless sack of sh*t or anything. He's just a guy whose art I don't care for.

As a diehard, lifelong Star Wars fan. . .

    by jimmay

I'm going to do my best to pretend this doesn't exist. This inane, pointless obsession with the clone wars was the death of the action figure lines, and will be the death of the canon now too. The reason Lucas largely glossed over the clone wars between II and III? Because they don't fucking matter. Jedis and clones fought for years and years, there were lightsaber battles galore, lots and lots of lasers fired, and many battles fought. But it all really meant nothing more than the springboard to launch the downfall of the Republic. It's a god damn anecdote, people; a blip that was skipped because it was, like all, warfare, sound and fury meaning nothing. And now, because Americans love pointless violence, we get a half-hearted, thrown-together massive cash-in CG cartoon, theatrically released to maximize profits and suck the last few remaining drops of nostalgia left provided by the phenomena that was the original trilogy out of the all-too-willing American film-going public. More 300 than Star Wars, this needless marketing campaign of a 'movie' promises to eliminate the last shreds of credibility the admittedly mismanaged prequels didn't already destroy for the franchise. Say what you want about the PT, and most of the criticism is entirely valid, but at least Lucas tried to keep the focus, overall, on the characters. But the fans wouldn't, couldn't, be told: "more clones! more battles! more war!" And now we have this. I've long defended Star Wars from the relentless bitchery of the talkbacks, no longer. This cartoon won't be getting my money.

but it's probably aimed at the generation who started star wars with the prequels. so let them have it. i've never been a huge fan of the series, i liked ep.4-6 when i was a kid and whenever i watched the original and heard obi-wan mention "the clone wars" it was like "oooh, what's that he's talking about? i wonder?" and it was this mysterious event that rocked the star wars universe but never referred to again in the other movies, so it was all left to the imagination. and then the books and such came out, but it was still in our imaginations and once it was brought to the screen thru the vision of lucas and his creative team, our version of it was gone and we "saw" what really happened...according to lucas. and it was what those three words referred to. a war involving clones and jedi. and the jedi were still a mystery too, as we only knew of obi-wan, then vader, then yoda. and i guess the idea of yoda being an ass-kicker in his younger(?) days sounded good on paper, but TOO MUCH C.G. makes for a bland moviegoing experience.

I found a pretty good blog on this very subject. . .

It sums up my sentiments pretty well: http://tinyurl.com/5xx2ej I strongly suspect there is going to be a significant amount of $tar Wars burnout here real soon. It's all simply too much.

Star Wars is for Kids... not for 40 year old Geeks

    by nando67

This is a reply to an email I sent my best friend regarding Star Wars: Clone Wars. This is his response and I found it fitting to post it here.

Hey. I was reading some of the Talkbacks and it suddenly dawned on me ... People (including me) are complaining that the story and plot line are too juvenile and not "adult themed" enough for them.

But, in reality, This is the opposite problem that most of them have with Battlestar Galactica!!! "it's too adult and there is no fun in the show!" i.e; "old Battlestar was better, boo-hoo"

I have started to think that Lucas is the smartest man on the planet now. Who cares about what a 40 year old geek thinks about Star Wars ... I'll market to THEIR KIDS! Hence, they'll grow up with Star Wars the way you and I did and the merchandising train will roll on forever!

Besides complain as much as you want, You'll still be buying the collectors DVD with the poster, pewter figure, baseball-cap, Burger King glass, Comics, Mouse pad, Trading card and the incredibly hard to find, limited edition Jabba's son glow-in-the-dark action figure. ("After all, I can't ruin my collection, Right?") loser.

Let them complain all they want. I'll take Any form of Star Wars over anything else. Imagine ... What if Lucas had never created it in the first place? A whole generation of freaks and geeks that would have had to have found something else to blame for never having kissed a girl and a whole new reason for still living at home with mom.

My advice, Stop being bitches and let the kids have "their" Star Wars. Move on, read a book. Better yet, write one and do something productive with their lives. Standing on line for the next "Narnia" film doesn't count.

    I'm out of here.
May the Force be with you.
    PEACE!
(drops the microphone to the floor and walks out)

    H.

  • I gave away my Ep 1 and 2 DVDs. I had a choice - give them away, or buy the Ep 3 DVD. Lucas can do what he likes, but I'm not going to give him any more of my money. I'll download the torrent when it comes out, and watch half an hour of it, then delete it. I can't tell the difference between Ep 1 and 2 anymore. At least Ep 1 looked distinctive.
