Allison Mack, who plays Lois Lane’s news-hen cousin Chloe Sullivan, may be leaving “Smallville” at the end of this season over money issues, according to TV Guide’s Mike Ausiello.
Aside from Tom Welling (who plays Clark Kent) and Michael Rosenbaum (who plays Lex Luthor), Mack is the only actor who’s appeared in every “Smallville” episode.
Rosenbaum has announced he is leaving the series after the current season.
I’m a little fuzzy, to be honest, about what’s going on with “Smallville” these days. Have Supergirl and Jimmy Olsen joined Lois Lane as regulars? Is Brainiac now some kind of Big Bad? Is Ollie Queen still hanging around? Is Lionel Luthor sticking around following Lex’s departure? Has everybody but Clark moved to Metropolis? Is Clark working for the Daily Planet yet?

i dont follow this show but have seen a few and one season ended with chloe's house exploding and her possibly being dead. i was sure she had missed a few episodes after that to keep the mystery going.

If it hadn't been for the strike, I think they could have made an amazing last season tying up enough of the loose ends that they could end the series and give everybody a satisfying lead-in to the "normal" Superman mythos we're all familiar with.
Now because of the strike we're going to need another season, both Lex-less and apparently now Chloe-less.
If this is anything like season 9 of the X-Files, everybody's just going to be really pissed when it ends... for all the wrong reasons. -
Make Erica Durance and Aaron Ashmore the regulars alongside Tom Welling, and you've begun the transition from Smallville to Metropolis. I'll miss Rosenbaum though - good acting chops, that guy. I'll miss Kristen Kreuk and Allison Mack about as much as canker sores.

It feels like this has been on forever. I seriously thought it was canceled at least 5 years ago. I don't know a single person who watches it. All the teens who liked it in the late 90's must have grown out of it by now. And surely its a little too corny for the fanboys. I love Superman, but not enough for this.

Clark is the only one left in Smallville besides Chloe but most of the action these days take place in Metropolis whic has gone from being a 3hr drive away to a 30 minute commute between seasons 3 and 4(Urban Sprawl thy name is Smallville)
Clark doesn't work for the DP but considering all the time he spends there the PTP probably think he's on the payroll.
My eyeballs continue to bleed from watching this dreck.

I was so looking so forward to a final season that included that idiot Lana getting taken out of the picture, Chloe leaving to parts unknown, Lex taking the final steps to being a badass, and Clark leaving for training at the Fortress. How can you have a final season without Lex? I agree with the 5 season mini series suggestion. Get this done with already.

...is the way in which they've had her blatantly deliver product placement in her lines on occasion. The line, "Take my Yaris" still grates on me. Who the hell uses their car's actual name when lending it to someone? It's like, "Here, take my car." They've worked Chloe's Yaris into the script a few times in the last couple years I've watched. Oh, also, I guess I'd say that the pop culture references they have her invoke often fall flat for me. When Ben Browder did that sort of thing as John Crichton it sounded cool or funny. Not Allison's fault, I mean, they just seem to want to emphasize that she's the character that makes the cute pop comments.

kind of think this could be a good thing. all the actors leaving as regulars (Kreuk, Rosenbaum, etc.) have all said they'll appear in scattered episodes, schedule permitting. But Abin Sur makes a good point that its time to transition Clark into his adult life for the last season. The show has NEVER been a great one, but here and there are some good episodes, and I too still just watch it out of habit. It'll be good to see the show go, but I hope it goes on a solid season.

I've stuck with this ridiculous show for years. Only because it is a Superman show on some level...and one of the very few bright spots has been Chloe. If she's gone, I'm gone.

I shudder to think how crap this final season is going to be. I bet Welling is pissed he didn't quit, but then he'd probably have to make another Cheaper by the Dozen sequel. -

after Clark graduated high school. They could ahve kept the name, called it Metropolis or even called it Smallville: Metropolis Nights. Whatever, but get out of that town. They should have had Clark dealing with real world criminals, not meteor freaks. He doesn't have to don the familiar red and blue costume to bust up drug dealers and pimps and thieves. Throw in the occasional freak-of-the-week, introduce a DC icon here and there and most importantly get him a job at the Daily Planet while he's in college. Lois should have either never been introduced or should have been working at the Daily Planet at the time of the move to Metropolis. Because more than anything else, how can you buy Clark as a great reporter when he's barely written an article for the Smallville High School paper?

i still watch, but only out of habit. i've suffered this long, right? supergirl and jimmy are regulars, although fairly uninteresting ones. supergirl lost her memory for about five seconds which was lame and two weeks ago, jimmy was recruited by the CIA, which was lamer. Lionel is dead, so if Allison Mack leaves, the cast will consist of Clark, Lois, Jimmy and Supergirl. Jimmy and Lois both work at the Planet, where they've started doing stories together which has been mildly amusing to see them working together. Ollie showed up once this season in a terrible episode featuring the Black Canary, but is now gone. Brianiac is a recurring character... fuck, looking at what the show is now-- it doesn't make me sad as it does frustrated. it's so poorly constructed, from script to direction. since greg beeman left for greener pastures, the only compitent director on the show is james marshall... most episodes use WAY too much shitty CG... all the decent writers have flocked elsewhere (Ken Biller, Doris Egan, Steve DeKnight) and even the showrunners haven't really been involved in years. the show should have ended this year with clark moving to metropolis and learning to fly. You got greedy, smallville! now your show sucks balls. now, unless the show does... um, well, i'm not actually sure what the show needs to do to redeem itself. i'll tell you what they shouldn't do- bring in Doomsday. oh shit, what that you say? They are?!? well fuck. you just know doomsday is going to be kryptonite infected daily planet employee who can turn into doomsday and back at will. no more alien badass, just a cheap Hulk ripoff. you know it.

i forgot to say that. pick up the dvds, download the episodes, do what you gotta do, but WATCH THAT FUCKING SHOW. watch it from the beginning and give it about 8 episodes to grow on you. some of the early episodes are a bit dicey but the show really finds its legs and is fantastic. I've done this rant before, and will again if necessary. Supernatural is a tremendously underrated program. thanks for reading.

While I never considered it a quality show, I still managed to enjoy Smallville for the occasional good episode and fun effects. I've defended it for years on this forum. But man oh man, do they ever need to stick a fork in it. Supergirl was a horrible character who made Cousin Oliver seem like a good idea by comparison. But an even bigger reason for the decline was getting rid of all the adult characters. Granted, I liked Chloe, but I'll miss Jonathon and Lionel even more. It's actually been a while since I cared about Chloe anyway.
I think the 100th episode should have never hit the reset button. Lana should have died, Lex should have finally found out Clark's secret and the head-to-head rivalry should have started right there. That was the moment to transition it from Superboy to Superman. But instead, I mark that moment where the show lost what little it ever had and mostly turned to crap (even by my lax standards). Bringing Kara on board was the definitive jump-the-shark event on the show. I'm thinking I'll only watch next season if they announce that it's the last. Otherwise it's clear that they'll keep this POS on for as long as the CW is on the air.

First, Lex and Lana aren't "gone." They both will appear in a handful of episodes each.
Next, I love Allison and Chloe, and it would suck to have her leave. Since the show has always been very different from other Superman stories, they SHOULD have had Clark end up with Chloe, and Chloe become the reporter that Lois Lane always was in other stories.
That said, TPTB decided looong ago that the above was not to happen, and Clark and Lois would end up together. Because of that, perhaps it's time for Chloe to move on. They should spend next season with Lois becoming "Lois Lane," and Clark training to become Superman. The last scene in the last episode should be Clark flying from the Fortress in his Superman suit, then Tom gives the "Chris Reeve smile and wave," and he flies off to begin his new life. -
WHYYYYY the FUCK aicn continues to cover Smallville is beyond me. Supernatural is one of the better shows on TV but I don't think I've ever seen a talkback for it on this site. I'm up to about episode 7 in the 3rd season, and it's been great so far. Supernatural is right up there on my list of shows to watch, along with Lost, BSG, The Wire (RIP), Dexter, and The Shield.

Season 8 is going to be a completely different show. Get Clark at the Planet, begin the Superman story instead of just prolonging it's fruition like what has been happening the past 7 seasons. It's their only card IMO. Allison Mack has always been my personal favourite, both as a hot girl AND a great actress (she's the only one who can act on the show!!). She should have been doing movies as well as/instead of Smallville, she's definitely worth that. She was gonna DIRECT an episode of Smallville but the writer's strike put pay to that!

As a frequent viewer, I also have to admit that the storytelling totally sucks this season. The only highlight in the show is Michael Rosenbaum. Newbie Kara is like a Barbie doll. Brainiac and Lionel Luthor transformed in easy-to-beat B-Villains. (Dont be surprised if they resurrect Lionel, though...) Sad to see Chloe leaving, but she still can leave with dignity. Loved the character.
And I love Supernatural. Beats Smallville in all aspects. Have to admit that both series together on one evening still make a pleasant CW-package..... Hey it's like a Big Mac with the Small(ville) french fries...... -

Is the most entertaining show onthe box, PERIOD! I still think BSG is the best show and I also still watch Smallville no matter how much it misses the mark, but SUPERNATURAL has been the most consistently entertaining show I watch and held that title since series 2. Everyone should be watching Sam and Dean do their thing, half way through season 1 the show began to kick and its never looked back since! It would be sad to see Chloe go, she is the one most would rather Clark ends up with but we all know that's not meant to be. They missed their chance to write her out of the show properly last season when she died bringing Lois back to life. They should have made the consequences of her sacrifice be that a part of her lives on in Lois, thus making Lois suddenly become the Ace Reporter and start developing the affections for Clark that Chloe harboured.

They should have her death be the thing that finally makes Clark go to Jor-El for training and become Superman. Have next season 5 years later, with Lois as the ace reporter and Perry White as EIC of the Planet. Have Superman be a rumor for a while, before making his public debut, which draws Lex out of hiding for the last 4-5 episodes as a real villain. Chloe has to die sometime, since she's not around in the future anyway, so they should make her death matter.

He can't be assed to shave his head and be bald for 3 months, so that's a no go, Kreuk will probably come back for 3-5 episodes. I don't believe that Mack won't come back for at least a guest stint, but I wouldn't blame her if she didn't. There isn't enough money in the world that would get me to stay with the show after the shitfests season 6-7.

I still maintain that Seasons 1-3 were pretty solid entertainment, but something happened at the very beginning of Season 4 that totally turned the show around for me, and made it unwatchable. (The whole idea of having Lois on the show never sat right with me). I toughed it out for Season 4, thought Season 5 was a slight improvement, but to little too late. Honestly, it just doesn't feel worthwhile to invest any time or interest in a show that the creators themselves seem to have so little respect for. What I liked about Seasons 1-3 is that it felt like the ongoing plotlines had some thought and logic and sense of progression in them, but everything I have seen beginning with Season 4 seemed like they were just making it up as they went along with no idea where they were going, and hitting the reset button at the end of each episode so that nothing really mattered. The plotlines seemed so ill-conceived and disconnected from reality. How does a failing farmer with no money and no political connections somehow get elected to the senate (and is it the state senate or the US senate)? Lionel loses all his money, then Lex gets it, but then they kind of forget about it and Lionel has some money and power that he got from somewhere... it just seems like you're not supposed to really think about it, because they're not. And from what I read in this talkback about the current plotlines, it sounds worse than ever. I can't imagine what could be watching about an episode of Smallville that doesn't have Rosenbaum in it. Predictable, formulaic "action" and a couple of pandering scenes where we see a girl in her bra and Clark blushes? No thanks.

any chance we can turn this into a SUPERNATURAL talkback? because i was all set with smallville about 2 or 3 seasons ago. anyone NOT watching SUPERNATURAL really dosen't know what they are missing. basically if you liked BUFFY you will like SUPERNATURAL, except after watching you won't have to question you sexuality. i kidd, i kidd the browncoats. but seriously, it's the same type of show as BUFFY; just with a classic rock soundtrack..... oh, and a kick ass car.

I've always been a little dumbfounded that Herc isn't a fan. I remember he wrote once that he didn't like the pilot and gave up, and that's always bugged me. The show is right up the alley of folks who frequent here. Lots of action, cool stories, hot chicks... oh, did i mention demons? something gets killed EVERY episode. you can't go wrong. The mythology on the show is getting pretty impressive and the show has done some neat stuff: The boys fight the ghost of HH Holmes, america's first serial killer; there's a baddie called a crossroads demon who in the 1930s gives legendary blues singer robert johnson guitar skills; one episode explores the Croatoan mystery... the show actually does some neat twists on actual events. The Buffy comparison is valid, although naysayers might think that's setting the bar too high, but i do say any fan of buffy should find plenty to enjoy. lots of cool guest stars, too: amy acker, julie benz, amber benson, linda blair, jim beaver (mr. ellsworth), jeffrey dean morgan, fredric lane, alona tal (hot meg from veronica mars), beth broderick... anyhoo, this show definitely deserves more attention around here. new episode tonight! season finale next week!

On the Allison Mack front, I agree with the poster who said she was the best looking girl on the show, by a long shot. Why Clark gave up the chance to put his super-cock between her gorgeous rack is beyond me. -
You don't really need all that much money or big political connections. Having a town full of people who like you can more than put you over the top. I personally know of one broke, batshit insane person, with zero connections, who got elected as a state representative, simply because the incumbent didn't want to run and no one else stepped up. By comparison, Jonathon Kent made a really great candidate. Not to defend that stupid plotline or anything.

Dean and Sam kick serious ass. Demons, rock music, the ultimate car and awesome stores. Although I don't like Bella and Ruby they sure are sweet eye candy. Alona Tal was awesome in there, regardless what a lot of people say. Kripke should hire Marsters, Boreanaz, Dushku, Fillion and Gellar for a few eps to get some more viewers who refuse to watch this show. SUPERNATURAL is not an Angel or Buffy rip-off.

They don't need any of the others. And with Perry supposed to guest appear in the finale, it makes sense they're moving on. -

If they'd almost exclusively focused on exploring the relationship between Clark and Lex. Those were really the greatest moments in the show, because it kept reminding me of Unbreakable and what Shyamalan did with building the relationship between the hero and his archnemesis - which was fucking BRILLIANT. Instead, the show spend several seasons doing the lame-assed Creature-of-the-Week bullshit which might have been fine for a season or two, as a means to an end for showing Clark's development and discovery of his powers and, thus, giving him a chance to flex his muscles a little. And, of course, it was the WB, which meant they HAD to through in a hot chick to keep people interested. So, again, fine, Clark needs his love interest - though, with considerably less angst, please - so he can eventually lose her, which would make him more reluctant to get involved with Lois down the line. But so much of the show was just pointless, retarded fluff, with the absolute worst episodes being the ones that did an ass-licking homage to shit the Charmed and Saw and whatnot. Goddamn, those sucked. But, yeah, we're 7 seasons in and it's like we haven't made any real progress at all. Can't say I blame Rosenbaum for wanting to bail. They squandered all the potential he had for character development. Michael Rosenbaum and John Glover were really the only reason to watch the show when it became evident that they weren't actually going to layer the character relationships and create a richer backstory for Clark and Lex.

Could we please have a "Supernatural" Talkback?? I'm not going to bash "Smallville" because I still like the show, but it's no secret that "Supernatural" is superior to SV. Not since the days of "Buffy" and "Angel" have I seen a show that so effortlessly mixes drama, humor, angst and horror, and the acting is top-notch. As for the classic rock, they had to cut back for budget reasons. Kripke is aware, though, that the fans miss it and they've tried to incorporate more classic rock in the last eps of the season. IF YOU HAVEN'T YET WATCHED THIS SHOW, DO GO OUT & GET SEASONS 1 & 2 ON DVD, AND KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS SHOW ONLY SEEMS TO GET BETTER AND BETTER.

He also said that lex's last shot would be a crane shot of him looking up at something. -

I've been whining about the terrible writing since day 1. The show had its moments like pretty much all the Lionel/Lex scenes, the 1st season finale and the occasional interesting new ideas but always hurt itself w/ the need to always have a krypto-villain of the weak instead of just solid storytelling about the high school events that shaped Clark into Superman. Though the past 2 seasons have been the series' best. Last season, the whole Lex/Lana stuff was pretty decent as was introducing Green Arrow and the Justice League (though Supes should have started them not Oliver). And this season, despite how much I hate the inclusion of Kara, has lately been pretty good all around. "Decent" was the best episode Smallville ever produced. Lex is finally the badass he was always meant to be and Brainiac is pretty badass himself. They even managed to slowly transition into calling him "Brainiac" in a way that wasn't cheesy. And in the season finale, it looks like they'll legitimately establish Lex knowing Clark's secret w/o Patrick Duffy showing up in the shower in the end like every previous instance where Lex learned his secret. And having Lex run the planet for awhile and use it to cover up his own crimes was a nice creative move that hopefully will final usher in Perry White's reign as editor. I'm glad Chloe's going; now that we have Lois, Chloe's redundant. And with the remaining characters being Clark, Lois, Jimmy, Kara, (and hopefully Perry White), that's what they've been building towards anyway. Lex will be a little harder to do without but with strong occasional appearances & we get a move towards something that resembles the classic Superman universe, we might not miss him that much.

.....is not a "buffy" or "angel" "rip-off" it's just in the same type catagory, just basically saying that if you liked buffy, or angel, or x-files you SHOULD be watching supernatural. tonights episode was a great example of how cool this show is, intresting villian, decent amounts of gore (especially considering this is on network at 9pm), and an unexpected twist at the end. the one and only reason this show gets no love around here is because McG is the executive producer and the "ain-it-cool-crew" hates that guy, so anything he has a hand in *can't* be good. and yes this is me rolling my eyes at that bullshit.

Lois while aesthetically pleasing, has the personality of a kick to the butthole.
Instead of 'quirky' and 'sparky' or whatever, she just annoys the hell outta her.
Kara? I don't know...I fail to see her purpose. I would've accepted her presence if she had just been Brainiac all along, but they eff'd that all up with whatever bullcrap they whipped out in the Helen Slater episodes or whatever.
That's not all that I have on this show- I just don't feel like typing anymore.

Isn't an issue. He'll reappear as a guest star when it counts. It'll suck not having him around full time, but he won't leave the show hanging during what they'll play off as the pivotal conclusion. And how fresh is this Chloe news? As there's one week to the finale, if Chloe just falls off the map with a bit of exposition explaining her absence (and they didn't announce a hasty write out for her next week) well, that'll just be pathetic. Yeah, if not for the overaching storylines with bits and pieces showing up in the most useless episodes, this show's rare jems-if edited together-would barely amount to three seasons worth of TV. Like a struggling DP article, it's time to just put this one to bed.

"Acuvue to the rescue...!" Anyways, the Smallville hate is beginning to grate on me. Maybe I have a different viewpoint because I never watched the show until I picked up the first three seasons dirt-cheap back in late 2006, and thus the "stretching-out" of storylines hasn't had a chance to grate on me, but I find the show to be an intelligent addition to the Superman mythos. Yeah, eight seasons for a teen-oriented show is pushing it (honestly, a 14-year-old who started watching in 2001 would be graduating from college now), but I don't really mind that they've been steadilly pruning the cast back for the last few seasons. Jonathan Kent's death has always been part of the comics (and it was a beautifully-handled episode), Martha leaving to become a senator was a decent way to write her out of the series, and Lionel's death a few episodes back was just the perfect "there's no going back" moment for Lex's descent into iredeemable evil. And as for Rosenbaum guest spots in season eight...yeah, he won't shave his head again (honestly, I can't imagine him WITH hair at this point), but, if he'll only be in a few eps, a bald cap will suffice just fine (his hair will still be pretty short to begin with anyways, easy to conceal). Lana's plot arc is certainly at it's end, and they NEED to start putting in some flirtation between Clark and Lois. And for all those "Watch Supernatural!" spammers, you'll all be bitching about THAT show when it's in it's seventh season and plugging whatever the "hot", underrated show of the moment is. Mark my words...

While the show may have seen better days, and this should be it's last season, the show is incredibly heavy on the mythology these days and you all would be incredibly fascinated by the way they've embraced the Superman mythos, and forsaken the 'freak of the week' concept for a "becoming-Superman-is-your-destiny" theme that has been the focus of the entire season. Granted, it's time they get there already - end the series with clark going into training - the show deserves more credit then most are giving it. Oh, and personally I think the last episode should be a two hour tv movie that takes place 10 years in the future, so people get to see Tom Welling as Superman facing off against a fully evil Lex Luthor. And hopefully this post isn't too long, but one more thing - Lex Luthor on "Smallville" is, in fact, the Lex that we never got to see in live action films - an evil bastard who threw his father out a window, lies and cheats and steals and murders without care, and truly believes he is the savior of the human race. Rosenbaum did an incredible job taking his character from a kind, good soul in season one to gradually (and convincingly) turning him into a monster of a human being.

For some reason I thought this was one of the very first shows on the WB. Thought it premiered around 98 along with Dawson's Creek and such. Still surprised to learn it's still on because I haven't heard about it in years. I've heard some of the earlier episodes were pretty good. I think I saw one or two. I liked the concept, but just could never get into it.

i guess we won't worry, osmosis. i used to really enjoy smallville, but it sucks now. tonight's smallville had a really weird vibe... kind of neat watching lex put together the pieces, even if it made no sense. the scene from next week in the fortress looks really cool. pretty sweet supernatural tonight. excellent ending.

5 seasons into this show, i already grew tired of it; just waiting for the final kick ass episode where lex finally turns evil, clark leaves lana. lana lets him leave for altruistic purposes. chloe either dies, retires or goes crazy, and clark (finally! what a slob, taking him all these seasons) dons his eyeglasses to work for the DP. just like the way the superman story really is. but now, they have fucked it up sooo bad that even that last dream of mine of a decent ending won't happen anymore. the last hope for a dignified end to this series is out the window.

...should feature Welling in the Fortress, shot from behind, in the full Superman costume, in a shot that mimicks the few seconds JUST BEFORE Superman flies off in SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE (after all the years of training with Jor-el). They've invested so much in incorporating the movie's lore that it would be fitting to end like that.

Even though it was "It's a Wonderful Life: Smallville" there were some iconic images/dialogue in there. You had Clark in the full Clark Kent get-up, Linda Danvers, Lex as president, "mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan paper", Jimmy's bowtie and the way he was fiddling with his camera, focusing in on Lois.

That said, she's young and can now do something else instead of holding on to a sinking ship. I used to enjoy Smallville but there's just too much Lois and Jimmy going on lately - and they're both annoying.

Once upon a time I would have said Smallville but God not anymore. Chloe leaving sucks but so does the show. The showrunners left too so now maybe Clark can fly for a change. Anyone who doesn't believe what the above TBers have said about Supernatural need only watch one ep from this season. You will be hooked. Can't wait to see how dean get out of his deal. And wasn't it a good ol' fashioned scare when Bella's time was up at midnight. It's 11:59 "click"12:00 and you hear the hellhounds howling right outside the window.

Holy shit...who thinks this crap up? The producer's teenage son? Bringing Doomsday in now is huge ass on many levels but giving him the same treatment they gave Bizarro is just fucking stupid. Rosenbaum leaving is a death blow. No question the best actor and the most interesting and well written character not to mention the best on-screen interpretation I have EVER seen of Lex (sorry Donner fans...Hackman is a superb actor but a buffoon Luther with doofball comic sidekicks is insulting as a foil for Supes and I'm sick of seeing Clown Luthor again and again). Oh and since Lana has been a postergirl for eating disorders, no question that the current hottie is Chloe to me (yes Lois has wonderful fake boobies but that plastic surgery nose is distracting...supergirl has a cubical head and a weird miniature nose the same shape/form as a bite-sized snickers bar)

The best thing about it is the urgency between season openers and enders. Shit goes down fast, the supporting cast is incredibly mortal, zero soap opera. Not a single real love interest introduced in it's three seasons. That's awesome, but you can't keep it up for 7 years.

...goes against lore as I doubt Lex could ever be president if he'd done time. Granted, calling the continuity of the show to the comic "butchered" would be an understatement but even in the context of SV he's been shown to president more than once.And if Supernatural is so good...why do the commercials make it look like pure ass? (SV's aren't much better but I think SN's are much worse).

With the hole muscle care rock and rollers going after the undead thing is not original at all. Watch Phantasm II and tell me they didn't lift the entire premise from that movie. With that said, Supernatural had a very strong first season. I could not get into the beginning of the second season but lost track and cannot tell you if it got better or worse. All I know is that there should be more shows like this with a little more scifi/fantasy gritty edge that has some real thrills. I agree, the commercials could portray the episodes better as a shocker with a story. The reason I gave up on this show was largely due to the fact that CSI: was on opposite it. Now with my DVR and some internet downloads/dvd rentals, I can get back into it.

This show gets better and better. Kind of like Angel did. I hope it doesn't get the same fate as Angel, i.e. getting cancelled when it is greater than great.

Well thats some good news -
I’m probably one of the oldest guys on this TB. When I was a kid, Lana was a redhead and Pete Ross looked like a blond Jimmy Olsen. Lex and Clark were friends until Superboy caused Lex to lose his hair… Admittedly not the best motivation for becoming a super-villain. So when Smallville arrived, I was very excited, and hoped it would not be another Lois & Clark. I liked the changes to the characters, and thought Chloe and Lionel were worthy additions to the Superman mythos. Then they did some stunt casting with Jor-el, having him voiced by Terence Stamp, who will always be General Zod to me. They portrayed Jor-el as such a dick that I figured he must be Zod trying to lure Kal-el astray. I was sure this would be the case after that 40’s drifter episode showed Jor-el (as played by Welling) to be a kind and thoughtful being – not at all like his Fortress incarnation. Somewhere along the line the Powers That Be seemed to lose track of Jor-el, maybe because Chris Reeve (bless him) died and left them without Dr. Swann. Jor-el seems inconsistent at best, and trotted out when the show needs some deus ex machina to save Clark (or Lana or Chloe or Pa Kent)… My biggest problem with the show is that Superman is supposed to be the first and greatest hero – one who inspires his own generation and even future ones (Legion of Superheroes, anyone?). This version of Superman is getting all his persona, from his CK alter-ego to his action suit, second-hand. Hell, he won’t even leave the farm, letting Oliver Queen be the impetus for the JLA… Green Arrow! Jeez, I love GA in the comics, but he was essentially Batman as Robin Hood – with an Arrow Cave, Arrow Car, etc. etc. etc. This is the guy telling Supes what his mission should be? And Chloe, who most of us agree should have somehow become Lois Lane by the end of the series, is getting terrible writing these days. Only an actress with Alison Mack’s chops could make some of those lines sound organic and not as the crass product placements they are. Now that the Kents are gone (Jon Schneider rocked), Lionel, Lex and probably Chloe, are we left with the Clark and Lana show? Ugh. The notion of bringing in Doomsday is a colossal size shark on the order of Megalodon. Let’s face it – Doomsday in his first incarnation was not very interesting – he was a mindless Hulk-like creature with bony projections and enough strength and stamina to kill Superman in what was ultimately a crass attempt to lure in readers and greedy collectors. Making him some Jekyll-Hyde pretty-boy bartender (or some similar characterization) is as mindless and idiotic as making Batman’s villain Bane a chauffeur for some other villain… Oh wait…

Despite never seeing it, it's not a stretch of the imagination to assume that Supernatural is better than Smallville (not a high hurdle), but is it better than Reaper? If so, I may have to Netflix it.

I'm always on the fence with this show. Half the time when I watch it I'm thinking how crazy stupid the plots are.. the other half I find myself recalling older superman stories from the 40s and 50s that were about on the same level.. Pete Ross chewing gum and getting stretchy powers? silly? Yes.. but didn't similar or same stuff happen in all those classic comics? (though I think it was Jimmy Olsen who used to get the stretch powers). Of course, just because the old comic was silly doesn't mean that this can translate to a compelling telivision experience in todays day and age. But still I find myself cutting the show some slack time and time again..
