A totally different look at OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE...

Published at:  May 27, 1999 12:47:46 PM CDT

Welllll.... This spy here accuseses the previous of spy as being a 'studio shill' and then launches into a completely different look at the film. Hmmmm.... Turns out that the review that went up yesterday, was also sent to David Poland of ROUGH CUT as well as a couple of other sites.... So... hmmmmmm... could be true. My question is though... Are ya really so desperate for a positive review that ya have to fake one? Or... was it merely an excited fan that sent it to all his fave sites? Well, we'll have to wait and judge for ourselves when the finished film is released...

I'm a big fan of what you do and have been a lurker for some time. I sent
in a review of There's Something About Mary that I got to see in a studio
sneak deal that was so fawning and enthusiastic you probably thought it was
a plant (this was before they had even started ads and the whole shebang
was a huge surprise). They even gave us bottles of TSAM hair gel as we
filed in. So now I'm reading a positive review of Outside Providence that,
having seen the film last fall in a test audience, I just have to believe
is a studio plant.

Although was still in progress when I saw it, it was very nearly completed.
Just needed some color correction and overdubbing. Even if it was shined up
like a new penny, it would be horrible. They're just beginning to run
previews/commercials and from the looks of whichever one I saw, it's the
same crappy movie. Of course that's a big disappointment for everyone
expecting a Farelly Bros. movie, but yo! A Farrelly only wrote the source
book and maybe co-wrote the screenplay. The film is pure mis-guided hokum.

Filled with sub-Dawson's Creek actors and an actress that looks so much
like Claire Danes it's spooky. The humor is stagnant and there isn't much
of it. The plot is muy, muy predictable. Not one thing surprised me. Even
that Dad's (Alec Baldwin's) friend George Wendt was gay. Now that was heavy
handed, obvious, telegraphed from the beginning, and treated as sensitively
as a very special episode of Night Court. And DUH! Of course Alec will
throw a fit but whaddayaknow, they're all playing poker together by the end
of the film. As a fag, I found it embarrassing and out of touch.

Anyone expecting gut laughs or a knowing recognition of the main characters
will be sadly disappointed. THIS IS NOT A FARRELLY BROS MOVIE!!! I laughed
more at Meet Joe Black (hey! they were showing TPM trailer.... I have an
excuse :) )

It's not suppose to be another "Mary."

    by silverwing

Anyone who is expecting this film to be like every other Farrelly script, will be disappointed. That's just not what this film is about. Peter wrote the book, Bobby and the film's director, Michael Corrente wrote the script. This is suppose to be a more subdued, touching comedy.

However, I also want to add that lead actor Shawn Hatosy recently completed reshoots of the ending with one of the Farrellys directing, and was given more latitude and freedom this time around.

In addition, this movie was filmed two years ago, before Something About Mary. So it can't exactly be looked at as "the next level in Farrelly entertainment..."

  • Film geeks are your best friends. When a "normal" person likes a movie they're just gonna walk out of the theatre happy and an hour later have completely forgotten the film. A film geek however is gonna see the movie more than once, buy the dvd, tell anybody who'll listen to go see it, get posters and maybe some collectors crap and look forward to the filmmakers next films where if the next film's good, will repeat the process and be a big fan of the filmmaker and maybe even the studio (if it's taking a chance by making the films). So by pissing us off, you're only gonna lose your most important customers and establish a bad track record.

    Chronology wrong

Actually, Mary was filmed during the late summer early fall, whereas Outside Providence was early fall to winter. True the book Outside Providence was written a long time ago, but all three (both brothers plus Corrente) wrote the screenplay. Both Farrelly's did help Corrente with the film, including some of the postproduction work.

I'm the one who wrote that review

    by savage lollipop

listen you player hater, I'm the one who wrote that review of OP that Harry atributed to Mason Jar Binks. So what If I sent it to every sight I could? I really liked the movie, okay? Is that too simple for you? Is the only way to stay legit to hate a movie? or maybe you're from a rival studio seeking to defame the film... where are YOUR credentials, buddy boy? let me make it more simple: ALL of us are studio shills, simply generating more publicity for these films. And I happened to LIKE Outside Providence. And I'm gonna shout it from the rooftops! You just wanted Harry to post you, and figured being contrary would make you feel special... anyway, enough of this, let's me and you take this outside, sissy boy, and then you can show me what you're made of.
