Coen Bros. Regular Stephen Root To Play HBO Vampire In Alan Ball’s TRUE BLOOD!!

Published at:  May 08, 2008 2:30:48 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Stephen Root (“Newsradio,” “No Country For Old Men”) will play lonely vampire Eddie Gautier in “True Blood,” HBO’s new Louisiana vampire hourlong from screenwriter and “Six Feet Under” mastermind Alan Ball.

Root’s co-stars include Canadian/New Zealander Anna Paquin (the “X-Men” series) as telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse and Britisher Stephen Moyer (“The Starter Wife”) as vampire Bill Compton. Carrie Preston, the wife of Michael Emerson who played Ben Linus’ mom on “Lost,” is in it too.

The project, based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris, is slated to hit HBO in September.

    Worried. . .

This is one of my favorite series, but they've totally miscast Sookie. Anna Paquin just is not Sookie Stackhouse. Oh . . . and the fact that she's a horrible actor doesn't help.

Stephen Root as a lonely vampire in an Alan Ball HBO series? Where's the not-cool element in this????

I trust Alan Ball...the source material is horrible...

    by filmcritic3000

The Charlaine Harris novels this series is based on are terrible Anne Rice ripoffs, with people turning into weredogs and werejaguars.

I hope Alan Ball can pull off a Herculean feat and make this a compelling watch and a television series that stands on its own.

An Anne Rice rip off? Have you even read these books??!?! In what way are they rip offs? Because they're about vampires? What a load of crap. Like AR owns the market on were-animals.

He's sort of nerdy looking for a vampire

    by yeti

As for Anne Rice she's become a PFOJ (personal friend of Jesus) so no interest in the "supernatural" except for her faith.

I've been dying for news about this for a looooong time. Wasn't the pilot finished a year or two back? I seriously thought this project was left for dead. Glad to hear it's moving forward.By the way, I find it very creepy that Michael Emerson's wife played his mother on the show. Eew.

    Ball = bad news

    by m_prevette

American Beauty was a fluke...seems like he specializes in odd for odd's sake. Six Feet Under started out fine but quickly became too precious for it's own good, so pretentious it was unbearable - halfway thru season 3 it was obvious they'd hit the point of no return and I bailed. And vampires can't be lonely. They don't have souls...they're creatures...undead...I guess they'll sit there in BAD southern Y'ALL accents eating grits...sheesh!

    were-animals, psychics, AND lonely vampires?

    by blckmgk13

definitely breaking new ground there, maybe they will make him a private investigator as well. Sorry but the addition of stephen root does not make this cool. Sounds like a mix between the skinwalkers, the covenant, and "blood and donuts". In fact the addition of Stephen Root comes across more "Buffy the Vampire Slayer - the movie" level of corniness then legitimate wow factor.

Can someone identify the roles he has played. I have seen every movie of theirs through Man Who Wasn't There and I don't remember him in too many roles. Were they mainly bit parts? I could just be brainfarting here

Apparently the first Coen Brothers film he was in was O Brother, Where Art Thou, which is why I do not associate him with them like I do Polito or Goodman.
