A French Score Review Of INDY 4 Is Now Available In English...With Sound Files (Sorta)!!

Some folks over at JWfan have translated (into English) a KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL score review that appeared in French last week.

It really does sometimes improve the movie. Try watching the original Star Wars Trilogy without music. A lot of the scenes lose their emotional impact.

I just hope there aren't too many of the uppertone strings in this, like harps and things like that, which have unfortunately permeated a lot of recent Williams themes. Maybe I read the review badly as I just woke up, but it sounds like Williams lets the melody play out but without finality, like we hear 75% of the Raider's March theme and then it seques into another theme. We've had two mediocre scores and another one likely to come. Willams needs to be brought back to Harry Potter for the final 2-part Deathly Hallows. It's amazing how the series has gone from the genius of Cuaron and Williams to two TV guys in the roles of director and composer.

I think Merrick's intention is to remind us just how absurdly long the title is, even in abbreviation. I'm sure he knows that saying "Indy 4" is easier.
The track list does spoil a couple things. For instance, it ain't ants it's... I won't tell. But titles like, "Marion's Negligee," "Mutt Bites It," "Cunnilingus," "The Ark Versus The Skull," "Indy's Wire-Fu Bonanza" have me intrigued.
Those are joke titles, BTW. Settle down, Beavis. -

I too learned of the death of Qui Gonn from the soundtrack, which came out a week or two before the movie. I wish they hadn't done that. Reminds me of that Casey Kasem bit they play on Stern with Casey going crazy about, "I told you NOT to play a godDAMN DEATH DEDICATION!!"

The Empire Strikes Back soundtrack came out before the movie with a title like, "Luke, I Am Your Father" on it? Or "Han Gets Frozen?" How 'bout a Jedi soundtrack with songs like "You're My Sister" and "Yoda Death Jig."

I was making a joke about the "Han Solo Frozen" track title--it didn't happen, but the "Qui Gon's Death" track on Phantom Menace was a reality, which spoiled the actual death in the movie for a lot of geeks like myself who had no reason to suspect he'd be killed off. Probably not a good idea, or at least kosher one, to allow your track titles to reflect major plot details. You know, details like "Indy Loses A Hand," "The Beheading of Marian," "Mola Ram Rises Again," and "The Ark Zaps the Skull Back to God."

When naming the tracks for IJATKOTCS (that's for you, krish-o), they should have taken a cue from the Raiders score. Looking at it as if I had never seen the movie, it gives some hints about what APPEARS to be some general settings or movement of the story, but doesn't give anything specific away. "In the Idol's Temple" "The Basket Game" "The Map Room: Dawn" "Desert Chase" "The Miracle of the Ark" "Marion's Theme" These are all aptly named, but don't give much away. Hell, if anything, they actually underpromise on a few tracks that certaily would overdeliver, i.e. "The Desert Chase" (one of the BEST chase scores ever) and "Miracle of the Ark" (gives NOTHING away whatsoever about what you actually end up seeing in the film.) Titles like "Ants!" I'm sure are meant to be a clever nod to the 50's style titles of campy movies, and while it doesn't tell much about that scene specifically, you certainly didn't need a track in Radiers called "Why'd It Have To Be Snakes"? Or calling the Well of the Souls scene "Indy finds the Ark/But Gets Trapped/But Escapes!" Abom, there should have been a track called "Cunnilingus".

The little bits they gave us of the new score sound good - mostly dark, with moments of Williams' whimsy, which everyone should love. "Grave Robbers" and "The Snake Pit" sound like the only real unique 'theme queues' so far, but we haven't heard the whole score yet. Including themes from Raiders and Last Crusade were nice touches, though.

To me, JW will always be THE film composer, but aside from the Harry Potter theme, there hasn't been any powerful, memorable theme since Jurassic Park. Yeah, I know what some of you are thinking: "The music should augment the movie, not be the star of the show," but for so many classic scores, the JW themes were essential ingredients of the movies overall. A.I., Minority Report, War of the Worlds, none of those scores were particularly effective. After the guitary, rock-n-roll Iron Man soundtrack from Hans Zimmer (which was as lame as The Rock's score), I miss a great movie soundtrack even more. I hope JW hasn't lost it for good. (I gotta say, though, even The Last Crusade's score was pretty anemic, aside from the good ol' Raiders March.)

I can't agree with that. The Grail theme and the music for the Young Indy / tank chase are aces. That said, you have to go back a decade for the last truly great Williams score (Amistad, in my opinion). However it's interesting to note that Spielberg's movies in that time have become more somber and less dependent on the Williams scores for effect (Saving Private Ryan, for example, has hardly ANY score in it).

Crusade had a nice score but not very rousing. Well, for me anyway. And when are they going to release expanded editions of the sequel scores anyway? I've waited damn near twenny five years to own those hard core cues from Temple that never made the cut on the first CD. Say what you will about Doom but that score is one of the titans of Williams' catalog. Quite literally awesome.

Sounds great! Save for a smidgeon of cutesy the score seems to have a lot of the classic Williams qualities going for it. Muscular, mysterious, jaunty, scary - very happy so far. It's an Indy score!

Well, I haven't seen a review of this yet and having seen the movie this morning, I feel I'm as qualified as anyone to post a quick reaction to it. In short, this is the Indiana Movie that you were dreading. I remember seeing the two trailers and though I was excited to see the old man in action again, I was kind of worried that they seemed to be missing 'something'. That something was tension. During the whole of the movie, there was not a single moment that I thought our hero Mr. Jones (actually Colonel Jones as he was a hero in WWII now) was in any sort of peril or even significant inconvenience. In most cases, you were so many steps ahead of the characters that it was really just an arduous wait for them to get through it.
Here we go with some Spoilers:
Well, sadly the hopes of seeing Abner Ravenwood were unfounded. Though we do get to see the big Ark weilding warehouse again (it's Area 51 just incase you were unsure), the Ark is not the main object that they are there for (they do show it ofcourse; ya gots ta). LeBeef is ofcourse Indy's son. And other than quick references to Indy's Dad and Marcus (both dead) there isn't much to link with the the old stuff.
The storyline is basically about an alien corpse from some crash in some town call Roswell, that has magnetic properties that may or may not be the ultimate weapon in the future. The Nazi's are replaced by the Soviets who are obviously bad and want said weapon to do bad things with. The alien corpse prize is replaced with the crystal skull from the corpse (the actual skeleton of aliens is crystaline, and the Crystal Skull is literally an alien's remains) and chases and such ensue as they try to figure out how to 'Return' the skull to the Lost City of Gold and let it's supernatural abilities run rampant.
I found it funny that they mentioned the Lost City of Gold as it accidentally referenced the old Allen Quartermaine days (a crappy knockoff of Indy Movies incase you missed them) and this was very much similar in most respects. The big problem with the movie is that the traps or perilous moments are completely ass-inine and ridiculous. From a quicksand trap that Indy has time to yack on about, to being saved from said trap by LeBeef using a snake as a rope. BTW, this snake is as crappy as a Mad TV prop when they don't CG it up, and that is another failing of this movie. The fake stuff doesn't mix with the real stuff at all. In the opening scenes where they are outside of the warehouse and Indy is pulled out of the trunk of the car (you'll recall the previews), they go from a real outdoors set to a fake indoors soundstage (pretending to be still outside). The jungle chase in the duck amphibious vehicles (I wonder if those will go in water at one point or not?...) looks like the whole jungle was made of plastic.
And then we go with the actual acting and characters. Well, everyone will be pleased to hear that LeBeef was horrible. He'd start crying about skeletal remains representing people that had died thousands of years ago (boohoo). Once Indy figures out Beef's heritage, he is non-stop complimentary towards every non-screwup thing he does (they would pause for mugs of adulation; just horrible). The Double Agent dude is comically horrible. Marion was actually really great when she was first introduced (about half way) and she and Indy have some good banter. But after that five minutes, she was sporting a big muggy smile as they continued on their adventure and she was never scared, worried, or nervous, even with the stupid moments that she tries to help (duck in a tree; you will cringe when you see it...). Cate Blanchett wasn't overly horrible, but her characters' abilities of psychic prowess were never successfully used and she whenever she caught Indy she was never really intimidating or bad. And then we have Indy himself. He has a few lines that work and a million that don't. He just never shows signs of worry or distress. Again, no Tension. He also has a weird tendancy to help the bad guys figure out the clues; never figured out why.
Anyway, I don't want to rant on forever, as it doesn't matter what I say, you will see this movie regardless. And even though it's not as bad as Allan Quartermaine, it's definitely not a good Indy Movie. But for those of you that feel that the new Star Wars Movies robbed your childhood, expect some molestations from Uncles' George and Steven... -

Raiders has such a dirty sound, but damn it works. temple shows just how masterful williams is at scoring his own sequel scores (this is why i hate it when new composers are brought in to rework his scores) last crusade was a solid film and it was a solid score. I have some good news for you, I only gave some spoilers that get you midway through the film. And though the editing here sucks, I did warn where the spoilers started so blame yourself for reading beyond the warnings. But ya, it's over 2 hours long (2'20 if I recall) and there are more surprises for you. Hell that warehouse stuff was all within the first 5 minutes! You guys wanted the review so there it is. Don't get pissed off at me just because the movie sucked. I wanted to like it too...

You are aware that Quatermain is from a book called King Solomon's Mines that was was written about 100 years before Indy, aren't you? If this is true you represent an awful lot that is wrong with "the Industry" in that you only recognise references from your generation, and this may also coincidentally explain the remake fetish, viz you are unaware of the existance of other stuff.

And this is not the only negative feedback I've heard from people who saw it today. Word's sort of venomous so far. One guy I talked to said it was "lazier than THE LOST WORLD."

I was kind of concerned about the way the "I don't think he plans that far ahead" line was delivered in the trailer. It seemed too "Ooh, this is jolly fun" to create any sense of real danger but then again the Indy films are not Ken Loach when it comes to realism are they?
I think if we don't expect the re-invention of the wheel and just look forward to seeing Indy on the big screen in a new adventure it'll be fine...

A few comments to make..
The score samples sound ok, but not great... but I'm sure in the same way as the original ST albums this is unlikely to be the complete score. I'll wait for the box set. Williams is still one of the best score composers out there. For my money I agree with the earlier poster that ToD is the best Indy score and one of Williams all time best.
As for the c**t who posted the negative review, we really didn't need that. Those of us who enjoy these types of films will no doubt enjoy Crystal Skull, it can't be like the originals - we're all older as are Spielberg and Lucas who are way beyond their prime as popcorn fun film makers - and the industry has moved on a lot since the 80's.
just my two cents. I hope I won't have to burn my Indy stuff like Tim in Spaced did when the Phantom Menace came out... -

Everyone knows that in the Young Indy TV Series he is still around when he is 93 so how can you possible expect him to not make it through this movie when you already know this. Also in the other 3 movies he is never in any real peril either so that part of your review sucks anyway. The fun of these movies is seeing how he gets by not if. The true fans will see this anyway regardless as they are only meant to be 1930-1940s serial B-movies and this sounds like it is so bring it on already.

He was talking specifically about "Quatermaine and the Lost City of Gold", which did come out after Raiders, to cash in on the success of Raiders, and as far as I know had nothing much to do with the original stories by H. Rider Haggard. "City of Gold" was a sequel to an adaption of Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines", but had nothing to do with any story H. Rider Haggard wrote. Is an accurate blow by blow of the plot - and I anticipate that the switch from Religous~Mystical Artifact to Mysterious~Scientific Artifact WILL be a deal breaker for a lot of people..
But the plot has been leaked already and that REVIEW could be faked - I could type one up right now, mentioning spoilers that he hasn't (INDY MEET MEERKAT)and make it all positive...
But even if it is real it is only his OPINION. Just because he says that Shia is whiny doesn't mean any of the millions who see the fim will agree with him. And as for looking cheap - going by the TV spots alone this looks like the biggest, best looking Jones adventure yet.
I'm reserving judgement until May 22nd. -

I don't normally do these, but in this case I must. I'm senior management for, shall we say, a film company in the uk, and got to see the movie last night. I've always been a fan of Indy, and looked forward to this film with caution. No spoilers. No plant. Showgun is talking s***. Thank me in a fortnight. The film rocks. It constantly looks stunning. It rattles along at good pace. Ford AND Shia are amazing. Marion does mug a bit, but I barely noticed. YOU WILL ALL LIKE THIS FILM...A LOT!!!!Think raiders/doom and you won't go far wrong!

Does predate Indy - in both cinematic and literary forms. Allan Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold is an incredibly loose adaptation of the sequel to King Solomon's Mines which was called Allan Quarterman. The book she has nothing to do with Quatermain's saga - which has about 8 or 9 books - one of which is Quatermain and She.
However the crappt Richard Chamberlain films that were made were indeed Indy knock-offs. So everyone is right!Isn't life sweet! -

I get worried. You can scan through this talkback and any previous ones about Indy4 and see that certain people have their mind made up. I'll wait for a somewhat objective opinion. I'm guessing it will get better reviews than Speed Racer, which, after reaching 45% on the tomatometer yesterday dropped back down to 29%. Oh, well. I'll still probably go and see it.

... but it was a little dashed when I saw it in the theater before IRON MAN, and the trailer didn't seem as good anymore. This review above confirms my worst fears, and confirms that the elements that bothered me in all the stills and trailers do in fact exist in full blown badness in the film itself.

so the months of posts saying that Spielberg was a cretin and this was certain to be shit were just an aberration for the 2 vaguely positive posts you put up. On a different note, I saw Iron Man at the weekend and was surprised to find that I liked it- mostly because I liked RDJ as Tony Stark. I'd say it is the Superhero film I enjoyed the most since fuck knows when. Doomsday (finally) this weekend. I can't fucking wait, as I've been wanting to see it for ages.

The weirdest thing, was how harrison looks firewall old at the start, and then looks like crusade was a year ago midway onwards....Maybe they botoxed him halfway through or he just got fitter as they filmed it? He can still handle himself though.

Can I ask - is going to see a movie with an open mind not a better attitude that completely having a film mentally ruined?This is not really based on anyone here but just on talkbacks in general. It's promoted here by some of the headlines which can be a bit pander mongering but Indy IV has been a long time coming - I'm excited, I have doubts but until I see the full thing for myself then I'll not know whether my doubts or my hopes have been realised.

I don't think anything can be as awful as The Lost World. That's hyperbole if I've ever seen it, and it impugns the opinion of whoever said it. I will accept the possibility that Indy 4 is a bad movie, but I will not accept the possibility that it's worst than The Lost World. I was against this project from the beginning because I didn't want them to ruin a great trilogy. However when I realized how exciting it could be to see Indy on screen again, I was quickly won over. I'm still really excited.

I mentioned it in a previous (but recent) Indy TB--Allan Quartermain predates Indy by at least 100 years, at least in fiction. But he was hardly the swashbuckling, good-lookin' hero that Ford is. He was a gnarly hunter, and would look more like the hunter from Jumanji than anything else. The Richard Chamberlain movies brought Quartermain to the big screen, but were indeed Indy knockoffs (Sharon Stone was in those, but I never saw 'em. Doubt she was nekkid)

Assuming that because this character was like Indy in these films he's like that in the books is like assuming you're going to read Bram Stokers Dracula and find that he's genetically manufacturing a strain of Bubonic Plague to wipe out mankind as he did in 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula'. As Abominable Snowcone mentions he is a typically British, old, colonial Hunter.The Lost World has some shitty moments but the dinosaur hunt is fantastic - and it has a good Williams score!

I remember Lucas keeeping the story(sic) under really tight wraps and then about a month before release I wondered into Woolworths and seen the soundtrack...I picked it up and there on the back was basically the entire fucking outline of the film!....I remember seeing the track, Qui Gons funeral and then sitting in the cinema waiting for him to die....

they release soundtracks like Indy and TPM before the movies specifically because they KNOW they'll sell copies to fanboys who simply want some plot clues like that. Sure, they could wait until the movie is out, but then they'll lose sales from that segment of casual fanboy who were only buying the soundtrack for a "plot outline." Especially nowadays, when after a film is open, you can almost always download the music via torrent.

So I'm back. So ya, to the kids that were saying Alan Quartermaine predates Indy Movies, I wasn't comparing the literary works, just the crappy movies. To save some worries, the new movie isn't THAT bad, but if you were hoping for a perfect bookend to the series, this is not it. My reference to the Quartermaine movies was more about the zany filler action sequences that come along (think the big spider in the cave scene from Quartermaine ; if you haven't rippeed that from your memory). And the way they get past the 'difficulties' is more implausible than the situations (again, keep your eyes on the duck). Indy movies have always had that, but somehow it looked like a solution that could have worked. Anyway, the kids above with the positive reviews (though they did't say anything that sounds like they'd really seen it) may have enjoyed it, but I'd hope that people would lower their expectations first. I wasn't hoping for Shakespeare, myself, but I was hoping for more than that.

I took me awhile to get through all the talkback there. There was probably abou 12-15 people watching it with me. As we were leaving a guy from Paramount asked what we thought about it and the best I heard was 'it was ok'. But as we were leaving the theatre, people started were a little more open with their complaints.
