Don't give me that should crap. Lucas universe /=/ EU. He's gonna do what's his idea, not just an adaptation. He basically see the EU as an alternate universe that is very in synch with his own, but differs in smaller details, such that he has the freedom to write whatever he wants, and the EU can do whatever.

    by thelastcleric

Anybody who names himself after a fucking video game should maybe notch down the arrogance just a tad, especially when calling out others as "virginal." As to what Sithdan was saying, he's more on the money than you probably even realize. Most Star Wars fans I personally know or have talked to over the years loved the prequels so this seething hatred and boring elitist mentality regarding the franchise really begins and ends with a vocal minority of verbose assholes who just can't let it go. Revenge of the Sith is three years old and you still whine like a cunt? If you're that disinterested with Star Wars why keep coming into message boards and groaning about it? Not exactly the actions of a guy swimming with chicks and living the dream, eh?

It looks like they were trying to emulate the look of the Clone Wars cartoon but I'm not thrilled with the overall style either. It does look cheap but hopefully the animation makes up for it. Personally, I would have loved to see something more akin to Beowulf or Final Fantasy: Advent Children but I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one regardless.

Expanded Universe. That's all the novels, comic books, video games, etc that make up the stories in the Star Wars universe outside of Lucas' own stories (the movies, or any project he's heavily involved with, such as Shadows of the Empire, The Force Unleashed, and the two upcoming tv shows.) The first two there I feel are more Lucas than EU in that Lucas was there the whole time approving and disapproving of what ends up as the final product. They're written by other people, but often stuff like this finds its way into the movies, like the Outrider cameo in A New Hope, and a Prince Xizor action figure being used as a crowd filler in Menace. Whereas most of the other novels he only gets like a story synopsis and approves or disapproves without actually even reading the books.

    NO MORE STAR WARS

    by underoos hero

I will not even talk about the prequal abortions that got all Catholic Priest on my ass. What is even pathetically worse about this is, I cannot figure out who the hell his (Lucas') target audience is for this film. The animation style is really not all that good and it plays a bit too cartoony to be for any of the old Star Wars fans like myself. And the content could be a little too adult for the demographic this animation style might be deisgned for. So I guess now that Lucas knows that he has really screwed over all of his loyal longtime fans (who are all adults now) he is going to back track and gear harder for the kiddie market and claim that this was his intention from the very beginging. Just like when he said that the prequals were his intention from the very begining. Yea right, bullshit. Not buying or going to see anything else Star Wars again. Have fun kids.

August is closer to actual premiere of TV show

    by strosmer

That's likely why it's being released when it is. Haters say what you will about Lucas merely being a moneygrubber, but I don't think he is looking for this to be a box office smash by any means. He'll make a hunk of cash, certainly, but a theatrical release is really just more a treat for the fans than anything. He doesn't have to do it. As far as it being released through WB instead of Fox, I'm not certain about that. WB has a more developed feature animation division, but I don't know what that has to do with the actual distribution deal. It's never set in stone who will be the distributor. Lucas had to negotiate distributiion with Fox for each of the SW films.

    by wowsah156

This is the thing about Lucas, he hasnt accepted that his fortune and place in Hollyweird has been built upon old school Star Wars fans who have now got kids and hernias of their own. If anything Lucas fucked original fans up the ass by refusing to give us a dark and adult story about the Jedi and their weakness. and instead decided that a 2 hours plus toy advert for Hasbro was the "future". We can se Lucas's senility all over this CGI toy advert that is called the Clone Wars. I will not watch the TV show. I will not pay to see this at the cinema. But the biggest way i can hurt Lucas is not by any of the Hasbro collectibles anymore. Lucas has misjudged the hardcore fans so badly and incompetently , i will not give my money anymore to his projects. Time to let Star Wars rest.

I am true to my convictions that the prequels never happened and that the "special" editions never came about. Flipping through the channels and stopping for 5 mins is not watching anything. It gave me no joy. It's like watching a train wreck. You have to peek.

All that I own of the movies is the VHS of the original trilogy when they were digitally remastered. Back then I opted to not buy the widescreen version. I wish I had. I also have the trilogy on DVD that I bought from a dude who burned them from his laser disc digitally remasterd versions. Those were great movies. I own nothing of the new movies or the special editions, as they all sucked balls. So I guess I prove your theory wrong. Consider yourself owned.

Won't happen. If you do the research and read The Secret History of Star Wars, Lucas barely even wrote anything for the Sequel Trilogy. Hell he didn't even know if it was going to be about rebuilding the Republic. In one version it was, in another the Emperor isn't defeated until IX. At one point it was going to be 20 years after the "middle trilogy", just like how the prequels were 20 years before that, and it would have a whole new cast, with only the main characters in the OT as cameos. Then later on he changed that idea to saying that it would be about the OT characters in their 60s. But beyond that, he had no solid story set for them, no idea what the characters would be up against, no idea what the enemy would be or the problems encountered. He actually only started thinking about making those AFTER Star Wars became a success, and basically just tagged on 3 more episode. At one stage Leia was not the "other" spoken of in Jedi, but a new character that would be the major player in the next trilogy. When it came down to the final draft of Jedi, he'd decided at that point he doesn't want to do 7 more Star Wars films, so he canned it, and had to turn Leia into the "other" rather suddenly, an idea resurrected from an early draft.

Point is the Sequel Trilogy never got farther than a vague concept, with not the slightest bit of story outline. The only possible outline was that the Emperor would be defeated in IX, but that idea was annihilated with his death in VI.

    NEXT STEP: "INTRAQUELS"

    by kevred

The sequel to this will cover the time periods between the individual scenes in this series. No longer will we have to wonder, "what happened between the cutaway from this dialogue to the start of the next scene, when the characters arrived at their destination?" Now we will know. For this, the new catch phrase will be, "intraquels", as they will cover gaps *from the middle* of previous films. So, to watch the whole Star Wars series in all its glory, you'll need about 9 DVD players running concurrently, and the ability to toggle between them at predetermined times to properly insert the "intraquel" moments into every scene change in the original films. In three years, a Special Edition of the Intraquels will be released, adding 20% more random background movement--creatures, ships, and tumbleweeds. Your experience of the Star Wars saga will not be complete without the extra depth that three more toaster droids and two extra Banthas in the background will provide. Our pledge to fans: we will do our best to insure that no additional exploration of any beloved characters' histories or futures is presented, rather we will maintain our policy (official name: Diminshing Returns Policy) of instead creating new, weaker characters around which to base our adventures.

He didn't rape my childhood but he fucked up my love for the OT. I can't watch them now without thinking of how stupid it all is. He ruined DARTH VADER!!!! The biggest badass film villain of all time!!! I keep seeing Christian Whats-his-Name behind the mask and his shitty acting. BLAH!!!! I was kidding with the owned comment. I have not watched the OT in a long time. But I did catch some of the OT on television and it reminded me of how good the acting and the cast was and how terrible the prequels are. But I have not popped any of them in my DVD player. I just bought the bootlegs to have them. I have not watched them yet. Just turned them on to make sure they worked.

It also shows some rare shit cartoons in between other shows. Anyone remember Wonder Bike? Or The Robonic Three Stooges? Worst catroons ever!!!!

    Lucas Wont Do ...

    by the bandit

any films past the OT or before the prequels because theyve been explored in books, comics, etc. in the EU by other people, and hed NEVER admit that theres a better Star Wars story or idea out there than one he thought of. Hes buying his own 'I'm the greatest story teller ever' bullshit. Sad really. There is a lot of great material that could be done, but we'll never see it on screen till Lucas is in the ground and years later his kids wanna cash in. Just wait, then we'll see it. The potential for stories before the OT was huge, but he totaly fucked it up. I think that post OT has huge potential too. Only time will tell what we get. But if this trend is what we have to look forward to, put SW to bed already man.

    by fawst

Look at the tip of Yoda's lightsaber. It meshes perfectly (or in this case, unfortunately) with the area of light created by the edge of the leg of that red-faced Jedi that everyone seems to have a boner for (that only EU junkies seem to know/care about), and the shadows created by the Clone Troopers. In other words, it makes it look like Yoda's lightsaber has an angular mushroom head. It's distracting. Come on, they couldn't have moved her leg a LITTLE more to the right to stop that from happening? And the more I see of this, the less enthusiastic I become. Unless it has a really good storyline (which I highly doubt it will), I'm going to wind up bailing on this pretty quickly.

    by cotton mcknight

more than me. I mean on a basic level. The philosophy behind it.. everything. However, I am a discriminating fan of the series and this is one thing.. I just can't get all excited over. One of the cool things about the original clone wars cartoons was that it was "actually" taking place between episodes 2 and 3. In other words, while we were waiting for 3 to come out, we got these obi wan and anakin adventures... and the last episode segued perfectly into episode 3. But honestly, what else is there to tell? We know WHY the clone wars took place now, and we know what the end result is. Unless it really gives us some good backstories.. like maybe how Yoda came to befriend the wookies or some more stuff on sith history.. I probably won't be interested. Just having adventures where anakin fights isn't "quite" enough to get me excited.

I love the OT, it’s a part of my life, I was born into it, grew up with it, but in all the prequel debate I've read on this site I've never understood why people let the prequels ruin the OT for them. I'm curious as to why they do. I've seen the prequels; they have not diminished my love for the OT. Granted, I regard the prequels as good films in their own right, but that is beside the point. The memories and nostalgia I have for the OT are my own, and no one can take that from me, certainly not George Lucas. You allow that sort of thing to be taken from you.I respect your opinions and just wanted to offer some food for thought.

The Clone Wars went on for three years. And the span of time covered in that cartoon hardly seems like that. I'm not saying it's bad, I absolutely loved it, but it basically consisted of two Anakin stories, each of which could take place within a week or so for each. And they seem to be happening at opposite ends of the war, with the Asajj story nearer to the beginning and the Nelvaan story near the end. Then in addition to that you have little vinettes of Clones fighting battles, and other Jedi fighting battles, but they individually don't amount to even a year's worth of fighting. So I think there's a lot more that can be done with those three years. I'm especially excited about that vertical cliff battle I keep seeing in footage.

There WILL be Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. It's a virtual guarantee. Yes, you are 100% correct that George Lucas had very little material written for a Sequel Trilogy, and you're also correct about Leia not originally being Luke's sister. But the fact of the matter is this: Lucas had very little material written for the Prequel Trilogy! Probably less material than for sequels. The PT was barely sketched out. I think that most people are unaware that EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE wasn't on STAR WARS until after THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK came out. Anakin Skywalker wasn't even Darth Vader in the first few drafts of TESB, they were totally separate characters. In fact, Anakin makes an appearance as a Force Ghost on Dagobah in those first drafts. And Darth Vader DID in fact kill him. But Revisionist George kind of makes things up as he goes. I've almost gotten off point, Lucasfilm will make another STAR WARS Trilogy for one reason and one reason only: $MONEY$ Lucasfilm Ltd. is a company, and no company can afford to NOT make money off it's intellectual properties. We will see sequels. They will be a trilogy. George will most likely be involved as executive producer, and there will be multiple video games/merchandise/spin-offs from the new trilogy. It will keep Lucasfilm running for another 20 years. They will need a new cash cow after the upcoming MUTT WILLIAMS AND THE (insert some 50's sci-fi sounding title in here) trilogy.

I'd have to disagree with you on the SFX of the two trilogies. The Prequel's look like cartoons. There are many scenes that are so unconvincing that it's almost comical. The Original Trilogy will always look spectacular. Everything looks real because it WAS real. They actually made the sets, the ships, the props, the costumes, and some of the characters. Yoda from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and Jabba the Hutt from RETURN OF THE JEDI look incredible. Far more convincing than Yoda from ATTACK OF THE CLONES or Jabba the Hutt from THE PHANTOM MENACE.

    STAR WARS

    by solobear

When is everyone going to finally get the fact that without Lucas and STAR WARS, we wouldn't be enjoying the films that we see today. It took a guy like Lucas to have the sheer balls to bring this stuff to life and keep pushing the technology of modern cinematic techniques to make things increasingly better. If he wants to keep the STAR WARS SAGA going, on TV or the silver screen, then more power to him, I say. I personally believe that there is a lot of life left in that galaxy far, far away. If you don't like STAR WARS, then what the fuck are you doing looking at a newspiece about its animated continuation in the first place.Trust me, he knows that he can't satisfy every whiny-ass punk out there. And he doesn't have to. Let the fans enjoy his work. Do us all a favor, just stay in your room and beat off to the stolen NAITONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazines you pilfered from your grade school library.

Most of the people who hate the prequels...

    by darth macchio

...do so because they love Star Wars. And the reason they may have seen each one in the theater, even more than once, and then purchased box sets, etc, is only because most of them held on to the feeble dream or belief that they could recapture the same feelings way back when, that it doesn't actually suck ass completely but is a pretty good movie on it's own. After each prequel I walked out of the theater jazzed and it wasn't until a few more viewings that I realized that it actually did suck and was actually very bad overall...good actors looking like amateurs, obsessive use of cgi, etc. If 'hatred' is the best word I dunno but any gripe against it comes from wanting it to be good. So much so that the sucktastic reality is actually denied at first I think. I suppose the anger comes from a sense of betrayal. If you don't have those notions about these movies then it seems stupid or over the top, contrived, pretentious. That's fine as with anything else there's no accounting for taste. And no I don't own a lightsaber nor a jedi robe..I just grew up with and love Star Wars (Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back to be specific...uncut and unchanged).

..the shite prequels didn't ruin the originals for me. Anymore than those baby-killing abominations Lucas re-re-re-released with all the changes ruined the originals. I completely refuse to see Darth Vader as anything other than what I saw him as when I was a wee rat and saw SW (nobody called it 'episode 4' of course) in the theater. There's no way that whiny douchebag Anakin (fucking Annie??!?! are you kidding...ANNIE?!?!?! sorry..got carried away there) character Lucas wrote for the prequels could fucking ever be the Vader we all grew up with (those of us old enough of course). For an amusing but fairly precise take on these notions: http://tinyurl.com/8k3uv

strosmer: Here is my take on SW fandom

    by romanocc

For me personally, the PT films don't affect my viewing experience, it is the SE that have really tainted the OT for me. I watched the OOT for 20 years, and then for Lucas to change the movie, which was fine as many directors do SE, but to not give the OOT a proper release on DVD that has the same quality as the SE is a slap in the face against the fans. Many people say to forget about the PT if you are an OT fan, but the fact is when I pop in the best quality DVD of ROTJ, I see Hayden there as a ghost at the end of the movie! THAT IS A PT REFERENCE!!!! Lucas's biggest mistake was changing the OT films to jive with the new PT films, as he should have just let the OT be, and make the PT, and fans will either see them as 1 saga or 2 trilogies, and that is just the way it is. As for the PT overall, the internet brings out the extremes of both sides, as you have the people that utterly hate them, and then at that TFN message board, you have crazies who say, "Is ANH meh?" All of my friends don't hate the PT, nor do they love them either, they have the SW name branded on it, so there is a love for the universe, but EVERYONE I know thinks ANH/ESB are the best, ROTS/ROTJ are good/OK SW movies, and TPM/AOTC are flawed movies that have their moments, good and bad. Just my take, I hope this helps.

I can't say it'll be THE GREATEST THING EVER, but hey, I remember loving Droids and Ewoks (and wish I could see them on DVD again, even if I may regret it), so I'll give it a shot. Though I just wish they'd consider serious traditional animation again. The animation studio who made the Men In Black cartoon backin the 90s was awesome, and I always thought they'd be great at an animated Star Wars--granted I expected the Heir to the Empire to be adapted and I'm kinda sorry they're NOT going back to Luke and Han and Leia after so much of Anakin and Obi Wan, but whatever. I'm just here to have fun.

    by slugbat

Too much Asian influence in the designs. Too high-concept. The OT took a few liberties with Nazi gear, fused it with modern aviation tech and retrofuture cool, and called it a day for the Empire. Fucking cool. No goddamn aliens, no fucking Affirmative Action hires like women and aliens, just Nazis in space. For the Rebs, the same. Imagine what the briefing scene from Star Wars (EP IV: ANH to you Gayquel lovers) would look like if directed by Lucas in FSOF (Fat Sell-out Fuck) mode: Tons of CG Alien bullshit, ladypilots, Jar-Jar bojangling as the de-briefer. Kinda funny to think about it. And anyone else sick of assholes defending the bullshit prequels because their snot-nose brat kids liked them? Fuck you and your hellspawn, tool.

Unfortuately Lucas is catering just to kids anymore

    by romanocc

I have come to belief that Lucas is really catering to the kids market, and unfortunately SW-stuff just isn't for me anymore. Here is what so many people get wrong about the fantasy movies that came out during the OT days, they were made for teenagers/adults that kids could enjoy, and now all the SW stuff is the exact opposite. Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Superman, Raiders, Back to the Future, movies like that all hold up today because they didn't have any stupid kiddy stuff in it that talked down to kids. Once you start dumbing down the movies, then you are essentially making them for kids. I constantly hear people say they don't mind the kiddie tone of the PT/Clone Wars stuff cause their kids will enjoy it, but they forget that the OT movies were all loved by us kids, and it shows you can make a good movie that doesn't worry about pleasing the kiddies in the audience, yet the kiddies will actually enjoy them, and later when they are adults too.

star wars as a whole is great

    by aquanaut

and george lucas doesn't owe anyone anything. if you paid for anything regarding the entire saga or bought any merchandise than you got what you paid for. otherwise get your money back. if you can't, well it's not like lucas was there begging you or tricking you to put money in his wallet. the only thing he owes is to be true to himself and his vision of star wars. if you only like the ot as it was originally released, great. you consider it complete that way...lucas didn't. personally i want to see everything. that's what i got with the special editions and the prequels. do i like the pt as much as the ot? no. is the pt flawed? you bet. but just because i didn't see the movies that were playing in my head didn't make them terrible by any stretch. i got what i paid for...a chance to see key moments in anakin becoming vader and the republic becoming the empire. cynical, pretentious assholes forget that the whole saga was inspired by 1930's serials...it's all kids stuff! star wars was never meant to get darker or more angst ridden just because some of you did. the saga doesn't belong to any one generation, but luckily it's divided into episodes so you can pick and choose. lucas didn't ruin any of the characters. you made false assumptions. nor did he rape your childhood. your own egocentric sense of nostalgia did that.

    by lemming

is because before them the prequels and any other Star Wars story other than the original trilogy were whatever we wanted them to be, and when the prequels were finally released it just became apparent that the stories we played out in our imaginations as we grew up were actually 100 times cooler than what we actually got. Ce la vie.Having said that, I reckon with some heavy clipping/editing the prequels are salvageable.

I disliked TPM and I absolutely hated AOTC but I'll still be seeing this. I enjoy Lucas's world even if I don't necessarily enjoy his execution. I still maintain there are some great ideas in the prequels that could have been realized if Lucas had managed to give someone else the reins.

    Makes for great action fig's

    by malificus

The Cartoon Network animated figs were way sweeter than any of the movie-based ones ever could be, and let's face it, THAT has been George's ambition all along, not to make great movies, not to perpetuate some hallowed franchise, he just wants to sell more action fig's than the Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles. A heady ambition indeed but he keeps trying, and you keep buying, and the circle is complete. You go George, I'm saving my wing wangs for the 'battle damaged' Anakin figure with a hint of exposed scrotum, I call it the Jedi Sack edition (variant available exclusively at Target stores).

And have it totally make fun of the recent Star Wars shit. I think Mel Brooks is too old for that stuff now. A shame.

    Letting the Prequels Ruin SW

    by captain mal

This is going to be long-winded, so brace yourself or feel free to skip it, folks. Hey, I'm bored and not working today.

    > Don't make sense too me either. I mean You either like the OT, or
    > you don't! And if you really liked it, nothing and I mean
    > nothing, could change that.

That's just a dumb thing to say. Lots of things could change a person's love for a story. There are so many factors that go into *why* people like things to begin with, it would really strange if someone's perception of a particular story *didn't* change over time--especially when major new elements are added to the tale. You'd really have to be a mindless zombie to remain unaffected.

    > The Prequel Ruined my OT is an excuse. I just don't see how one
    > bad film ruins a good film or collection of good films.

Think, man! Why does anyone love the OT? Is it the sequential succession of images and sounds that endeared the OT to millions of people? Of course not. (Hollywood, take note) It was the story those images and sounds were telling.

Now, then, the prequel trilogy didn't simply add extraneous information to the original story, it added *integrated* information--new elements that not only described the context of the OT, but altered the implications of the OT itself.

What does that mean for the audience? It means it is now possible for a viewer to realize that they misunderstood the OT to begin with. The new information doesn't just add to what we know about the OT, it *changes* it fundamentally.

I'll give you an example to illustrate what I'm talking about:

In the original trilogy, Anakin Skywalker was essentially a mystery, but Obi-Wan and Yoda talked about him in hushed tones of awe, reverence, and regret. Anakin was an icon, a legend, but above all, he was a mighty hero who was tragically seduced by the Dark Side. His redemption in ROTJ was moving because we finally saw the face of this legendary hero, broken down and betrayed by his own weakness.

    That's a pretty cool story.

When the prequel trilogy came along, we witnessed something different. This Anakin was a whiner, a romantic sap, a pouter. He was never an influential hero or icon, and certainly was not revered among his peers. His "seduction" by the Dark Side was anything but. In the grand scheme of things, he wasn't even really very important. Bummer.

But wait! This doesn't just affect our perception of Anakin. It also affects our perceptions Obi-Wan and Yoda, who originally led us to believe that this guy was once totally fuckin' awesome. Now we think less of *them*, too.

Same thing happened with the force and midichlorians. And Boba Fett. And on, and on, and on.

Of course, it didn't help that the prequels were poorly acted, disastrously directed, and completely lacking in thematic focus. But I believe Star Wars fans would have forgiven those things, if the story that Lucas chose to tell didn't actually *undo* what was originally "done."

I could go on, but I'm fairly certain no one is actually still reading at this point. :)

    > Halloween has tons of shitty sequels and a craptastic remake.

Sequels and remakes are far easier to dismiss and ignore, as they don't integrate with the original story. Prequels are, by nature, a different beast altogether.

A book just came out last year called "The Making of Star Wars." A great book, very definitive. It has notes on Lucas's drafts for the first film. His notes at the time were loaded with names and places that were later used in the prequels. He had quite a lot in mind. The name Binks was listed. Tattooine was originally going to be Utapau. Dude has a helluva mind. It's no wonder he's commonly misunderstood.

Read the first drafts of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Anakin Skywalker is Luke's father. He makes an appearance on Dagobah as a force ghost. Darth Vader is not Anakin Skywalker. Darth Vader is a former pupil of Obi-Wan Kenobi's who KILLED Anakin Skywalker. The two characters were combined into one during the writing of TESB and it was Leigh Brackett's idea, not George Lucas'.

Yeah, you're definitely correct in that Lucas mined his very first draft for character names, planet names, some plot points. But the actual story arc of the Prequel Trilogy, "Anakin's fall to the dark side" is no where to be found. I think that a lot of people are confusing the fact that Lucas of course did have some backstory for the characters with a fully realized three script trilogy. George didn't even have the Episode III script done until after they started filming.

I'm not bitter about the Prequels at all. They don't ruin my enjoyment of the Original Trilogy any more than ALIEN: RESURRECTION alters my perception of ALIEN or ALIENS, or LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD changes my love for DIE HARD. I do see your point though Captain Mal, I'm just speaking from my own view on the STAR WARS saga.

Star Wars ain't as much about story as it is

    by strosmer

spaceships dogfighting each other. Lucas wasn't so empty-headed he wasn't going to bother with a story or thematic elements, but essentially SW spawned out of the visual ideas Lucas had spinning around in his noggin. He is primarily a visual artist, not a literary one. In SW, Lucas is more concerned about pushing the cinematic envelope than writing the great American novel. That's not obvious to any of you who endlessly bash the writing and acting? Lucas never had a great passion for story or writing. He's admitted this time and again. I don't see why the literary aspect of SW is even given any regard in critique, it's not the focus - the visuals are. He chose a simple story to connect the visuals he had in mind. Granted, it's not a simple-minded story. There is a very strong and poignant literary element to SW despite its misgivings. He still did relate a lot of philosophical ideas and political commentary through a moralistic tale. Without doing so people wouldn't care about seeing these movies no matter how pretty a picture he painted.OT and PT both offer up excellent spaceship dogfights and other visual feasts. He has yet to disappoint in terms of cinematic experience. He has in fact, proven himself over and over again in that regard, even in his most recent work. The story does not have to be any better than it is to enjoy these films for what they were intended to be - a cinematic feast.

You've more or less revealed yourself in that last post. If you only care about frenetic action and special effects, it's no wonder the prequels don't bother you. I will reiterate, however, that the reason Star Wars resonated with millions was the re-telling of a classic story form. Why hasn't every other visual cinematic extravaganza resulted in the same sort of fevered fandom that the OT generated?

And don't try to assert that Lucas didn't care all that much about storytelling. For years he couldn't yammer on about anything other than the Hero's Journey, and his fascination with Joseph Campbell's work.

    by smashing

I will begin lowering my expectations right away, maybe I will get an unexpected thrill. The prequels missed the mark as mentioned by a few clever clogs as the story lacks any real heart or likeable characters, they're all paper thin emotionally.

No, Captain Mal, you read me wrong

    by strosmer

and are just plain off base about what I care about in film. I in fact back up the fact that despite a lack of focus on story, Lucas accomplished something literary. He obviously did care about the story (and I do too quite frankly). My point was that writing was something he was never that keen on, he was more preoccupied with visual ideas, and it shows in his work. That's not a criticism. Incidentally, his lack of interest in writing is the reason he adopted the Hero's Journey to tell his tale in the first place. It provided a convenient template for him to work with so he wouldn't have to struggle so much with his mania of ideas. The prequels don't bother me because I know the story is good on the same basic level as the story of the OT. They're constructed in a way that you don't have to be distracted by petty plot points, less than grade A acting, or corny dialogue to truly enjoy the show.

    by captain mal

I didn't mean to imply that's all you care about in general. What I should have said is that if that's all you're expecting of a Star Wars movie, then it's no wonder you like the prequels.

Gotta disagree with you, however, that the story in the prequels is "good on the same basic level as the story of the OT." The prequels are wildly unfocused in terms of theme, and particularly inept in terms of execution.

The OT told depicted a classical hero's journey that was painted with broad emotional strokes, was easy to follow, and was *lightly* sprinkled with humor, philosophy and romance.

The prequels, on the other hand, attempted to be a full-blown genesis story, a sweeping romance, a heroic tragedy, an epic political drama, *and* a cartoony action movie, all in equal measure. No film, "Star Wars" or otherwise, could successfully pull off such a thing, and the primary story (assuming Anakin's journey is it) suffers greatly as a result.

Lucas didn't have it all planned out from the start

    by romanocc

Lucas didn't have any of this planned out when he shot SW in 1977. I believe he wrote SW, and had some rough notes about Kenobi, Darth Vader, etc, and had some unused ideas he left off unless he made sequels. Essentially SW'77 is the movie, beginning to end, with Vader not dying just in case.... If you watch ROTJ, it takes alot of plot points from SW and I believe Lucas was already out of ideas after ESB. As for the PT, Lucas never had intentions of doing this trilogy until he came up with the Luke/Darth Vader father/son dynamic in ESB. If you read The Annotated Screenplays, the first draft for ESB was titled: Chapter II: The Empire Strikes Back, November 28, 1977. Another draft was titled: Star Wars Sequel: February 23, 1978. If Lucas had this all planned out with a PT, why wasn't the first draft called: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back? Sometime from September 77- Oct 78, Lucas changed the whole story because he developed this new plot point of Darth Vader BEING Lukes father, that is why the next draft, dated February 1979 is titled: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Then Lucas went and changed the opening crawl to Episode IV: A New Hope for the 1981 re-release of Star Wars. Guys, it is all right here from old notes, old documentaries, old drafts, Lucas had one legitimate story, the one that came out in 1977, and the rest he made up on the fly. I wish he would just admit it cause it would be interesting as hell if he thought of the Darth Vader plot point when he was taking a shit or something.
