Do you love the classic Universal Horror Films? Want to help honor one of the unheralded saviors of Universal Pictures?

Published at:  May 07, 2008 2:06:52 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I don't usually do this. I rarely endorse a petition effort going on online, because frankly... it takes a lot to motivate me. However, when I got an email from Scott Essman asking for my help in attempting to secure a Star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame for Movie Make-up legend Jack Pierce... I clicked, signed the petition - then came back here to pitch all of you... and all you good folks at Universal Studios.

Jack Pierce - the man... working with such great faces as Karloff, Lugosi, Claude Rains, Henry Hull & Lon Chaney Jr... he created the greatest single body of absolutely spectacular, unforgettable monster creations of any man in history. Don't get me wrong - I love Rick Baker and Stan Winston and Rob Bottin and all the modern creature makers... but the one thing that joins them all in awe... is the early work of Lon Chaney Sr... and the unbelievably brilliant work of Jack Pierce.

When you think Frankenstein... that's Jack Pierce's work on Karloff's face you're thinking of. Lugosi's Dracula? Karloff's Mummy, Lon Chaney Jr's Wolfman? Henry Hull's Werewolf or Claude Rains' Invisible Man? All Jack Pierce. Then there's all that amazing work in films like THE RAVEN, THE INVISIBLE RAY, MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, WHITE ZOMBIE, THE OLD DARK HOUSE and on and on.

Jack Pierce's body of work is truly without compare. What he did at Universal could never be replicated - and no matter how many times I've seen masters try... I've never seen it done so well. Jack's work was like a photograph of a nightmare that flipped past your waking dreams at 24 frames per second.

UNIVERSAL - next year you are making a remake of THE WOLFMAN - one of Jack's greatest works - it'd be so good for publicity to get THE WOLFMAN crew out - and to have them get a little press honoring the great Jack Pierce with a Star on the Walk of Fame. Rick Baker would be there - Benicio would in a heart beat. It's the right thing to do!

As for all you readers... Here's where you go to sign the petition: GIVE JACK PIERCE A STAR!!!

Doesn't a star on the Walk of Fame cost something like $25K? I'm not opposed to giving the man his due, but I'm sure I've heard in the past that most stars pay for themselves or have their fan clubs pay.

When I was 4 years old I watched Frankenstein on the late show, and that night I pissed my bed because I thought Franky was under my bed and would grab my ankle. Anyone that can make me urinate on myself deserves a star....and he created icons that are still alive and well in today's pop culture.

The studios hire him because he does what they tell him without putting up a fight. He's in it for the bigger lounge room, not for satisfying the fans or an audience in general. I'd love to see Christopher Nolan take over..maybe add that in the petition. It'd get 10,000 signatures in a week.

It takes a lot to motivate you to sign an online petition? That's...uh, remarkably lazy. We're talking, what, two or three clicks?

The real reason to diss online petitions is not the effort required but because they're useless.

    a posthumous star

    by smilin'jack ruby

I love Pierce's work, signed the petition straight away, but isn't it really hard to get them to do a posthumous star? I remember when there was that campaign to get Forrest Ackerman a star just after his stroke (which he richly deserves) and part of the urgency was because the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will only award a small number of posthumous stars (two?) a year as they don't attract as many tourists/aren't as big a press release as, say, P. Diddy or the other dozen or so stars they award annually. Understandably, it is a business the enshrining of stars on the Walk of Fame (which is why it's good to have a studio putting up the hefty nomination fee), so that's almost double the reason why getting people to sign a petition and really get Universal in on the game - though with that "Wolf Man" date, they may just see it as the right time to get Baker HIS well-deserved star as I don't believe he's got one, either.

How come jerks like Vince McMahon have one and legends like Pierce don't ? Jack Pierce was the visionary pioneer that paved the way for Tom Savini, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin & Greg Nicotero.

The Horne legacy: GREAT busts & statues

    by thegreatwhatzit

I'll gladly sign; Universal pretty much dumped Mr. Pierce when the brass gauged horror movies to be unprofitable. Never mind that Pierce's prosthetics are iconic--and his creations contributed to the studio's rescue from bankruptcy. Harry, did you consider a hungry strike? Didn't think so. Check into Daniel Horne's homage to the Universal monsters; his sterling work is flawless (an unprecedented improvement over Universal's own franchise). I'm with RobinP. I cannot believe such a legend has yet to be honored. While I do consider the Walk of Fame to be a bit cheesy, this man truly deserves some sort of recognition. He is really the artist behind the curtains who helped build that company. I need to go back and re-watch some of those films.

    by luna moth

As mentioned above, who'se going to pony up the cash for the star? And yes, internet petitions are totally useless - who is being petitioned anyway? If movie fans are going to make an effort to honor Pierce, we should do something meaningful, like maybe organize a film festival in his honor, stuff like that.

if toads like Ryan Seacrest have one and Jack Pierce and Creighton do not, well then, that just means that the stars aren't worth squiddly-diddly squat and must be just some once meaningful now trivialized bit of ego stroking!!

That being said, what a freaking crock and thank you big red for bringing it to our attention...anyone read the Pierce book?
