Prepare for your Christmas Spirit to be a little more... Spirty...

Published at:  May 07, 2008 12:19:58 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Lionsgate has bumped up Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT out of 2009. It's now hitting Christmas Day '08. My guess is to get as much distance between it and WATCHMAN as possible, both are going to be hard edged comic book movies aimed at older geeks (meaning not children).

I'm very curious about this one. Hope it's good.

    I don't know...

    by theghostwholurks

I really don't want to see Frank Miller's version of The Spirit. Hard-edged comic ala The Watchmen doesn't exactly fit in the same category as Will Eisner's creation.Especially after having read Darwyn Cooke's current version, which — to me — seems to have captured and updated the spirit of The Spirit perfectly!Just reading Miller's updating of "Batman and Robin" comic makes my skin crawl, it's so off-base. And after seeing his Sin City-fied trailer of Denny Colt's alter-ego, I have almost no hopes that this will be anything more than TSINO when all is said and done. Which is very sad. :(

Can Hollywood make some superhero movies for kids? I would love to take my kids (ages 6-9) to a superhero movie one of these days. Dark Knight, Hulk? and Iron Man are aimed at older audiences. The Incredibles anyone?

Christmas??? This is fucking terrible idea!

    by live.

This is the kind of thinking that killed the Golden Compass ("let's put the atheist movie out at Christmas"). Holiday shoppers and families want to see National Treasure not AVP.

And once again AICNers line up to crap on this fun looking project. God forbid we actually have something released in December this year. The month is a freakin' wasteland now that Star Trek and Angels & Demons moved back.

I have to say the teaser concerns me

    by big jim

I did not think Miller was going to go "Sin City" with the look of the film. I had hoped it would look more like Dick Tracy. To me The Spirit is in colour, not B&W.

    by slone13

Give it a rest, chumps. Who do you think you're fooling? At the very least, get yourselves a better adjective. It's like saying something "sucks". Which is fine, provided you're in 4th grade, and have a limited vocabulary.

    too much sin

    by scrnwrtr

the current teaser bears a striking resemblance to sin city, without question a genre masterpiece...however, for those of us familiar with the spirit, there seems to be something missing at this point, liberties appear to have been taken (a filmaker's right)...however, denny colt and his graveyard lair, commsioner dolan, sand saref, p'gell (who doesn't seem to have made the shooting script) and the whole bunch have been among my favorites since i was a child...so best to reserve judgement and see what comes out in the wash...just don't wanna be let down...eisner was a god, the penultimate...here's hoping miller does this titan justice...

    I've said it before

    by larry sellers

It looks like a movie Frank Miller made. What else would you expect? All of his books look the same, what'd you think would come out of his film career? Nothing against Miller, I enjoy his work. It's just the backlash that's accusing him of being derivative of...himself? It makes no sense. I think I'll give it a chance even though I'm really unfamiliar with the original comics. It looks bearable.

    What killed The Golden Compass....

    by midnightbomber

...was its boring, meandering storyline. I'll bet most people who saw it had no clue that the source material was strongly atheist (the movie didn't really play that up, just hinted). They just knew it didn't grip them or inspire any kind of emotion like a good fantasy movie should, or any good movie for that matter. I wish they'd taken half the time they devoted to production design and channeled it towards smoothing out such a bumpy script.
