Published at:  May 07, 2008 8:07:21 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Marvel Entertainment, which already has Spider-Man on the CW, Iron Man, Wolverine and the X-Men coming to Nicktoons, and the Black Panther coming to BET, is going forward with 26 animated episodes of “Marvel Super Hero Squad.”

From Tuesday morning’s Hollywood Reporter:

It will feature such well-known heroes as Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Thor, Fantastic Four and Captain America; all occupy a caricatured Super Hero City and are thrust into humorous adventures as they thwart the villainous plans of Doctor Doom, Magneto, Loki, the Abomination and others.

A “Squad” comic-book series, direct-to-DVD movie and toy line are in the works as well. Marvel is shopping the project to a number of channels for a 2009 debut.

Is this in the same style as the DTV Avenger movies?

    by mace tofu

Those were OK. The "humorous adventures" worries me this will a more "kid" friendly version.

    From the description, I'm sure

    by silentp

this is going to be purely a kid's show. Nothing wrong with that. For kids. But we better not get a lot of bitching from talkbackers who think it should be darker or something.

Both Marvel and DC been saying it for years

    by ian216a

They need to bring the kids in. Kids just don't buy comics anymore, which is cool for us aging comic geeks as we get mature, well-told stories from the mainstream. But we won't live forever, and kids today have so many things to spend their money on. So if aiming these cartoons at a new younger audience is what it takes to get them interested, good luck to them.

    For the Kids

    by iloveewksandjjar

Ok. Sure. Fine. But why must 'for the kids' equate dumbed down? As a kid I enjoyed all the superhero shows from the 90's, even though they featured complex, dark storylines that sometimes were a little too hard to follow. If they have cool names and cool costumes, kids will tune in. Hilarious adventures are not required.

I presume this series will be used to sell breakfast serials and t shirts for kindergarten kids. I would like Marvel to go a pair of balls and do an adult animation along thre lines of Sapwn, in that we see the characters having to make difficult choices in a dark world. If Dc can do it then why not Marvel?

    Jamie Hewlett

    by todayzspecial

I got excited for a second and thought how kick ass it would be if Jamie Hewlett - creator of Tank Girl and the Gorillaz did a version of the Marvel Universe. That would indeed be even more awesome than Bruce Timm's version of the DC universe. Then I realized it said James Howlett ... then I slipped backed into my depressive state.

Seriously the market is ripe for it. Cartoons are not just for kids so why (almost) always aim for kids when making them?

Kids are not stupid, they can follow adult comic lines. I never got how there is not a prime time adult toon show that is not humor based.

I'm sure as hell glad I had awesome superhero cartoons to watch. The X-Men, Spiderman, The Tick, and Batman series on Fox were GREAT. I dunno about this "humorous" crap. Ah well, I got my fill of the good stuff back in the day!

Hollywood thinking children have to be talked down to.When I was a kid in the 90's, I appreciated Batman TAS.What I didn't like was that Barney crap and things like Ghostwriter. Why is it that they think anything aimed at kids has to be overly silly?Has anyone taken a look at this junk on Noggin or the other kids networks? How about making shows that don't treat kids like idiots.I try and watch some of these shows on Nick and Disney but these things are unbearable. Why not make every animated hero show like Justice League. That show was entertaining for adults and could also be followed by kids.

    News Flash Nerds

    by krish-0

Not everything is for you. This series is going to be aimed at the preschool set. What's wrong with that? Not everything needs to be dark and edgy. And what does this have to do with "talking down" to kids? It's giving them what they want. There's a reason why this kind of thing is popular with young children. BECAUSE THEY FUCKING LIKE IT. Funny jokes and bright colors. I have two children myself, and I can see my 5 year old loving this.

    The "For the kids" argument

    by samsquanch

kind of sounds like Lucas' defense of Jar Jar. He claimed that all the 35 year old men complaining about Jar Jar just didn't 'get' the fact that the movies were for kids. Now, aside from the blatant disingenuous bullshit, this is also incorrect, since kids as young as 8 thought jar Jar was 'gay'. Now, unless Lucas was only concerned with the 3-6 year old demographic, I think there might have been something else at work there.

Sure, this is going to be 'for kids', but like one poster said above: "Nothing says wacky like razor-sharp claws!"

Besides, who do you think will buy the inevitable $200 figurines?

What This Site Failed To Mention...

    by shadowvoyd

That other sites did is what Darth Bauer said. This cartoon is aimed specifically at kids 6-8. You know, the kids who buy those oversized Fisher-Price style toys? Yeah, them. Not us. It's about indoctrinating 'em early, so quit you're griping people. I don't begrudge the kdis a 'toon of their very own. It's Sam Register style Transformers:Animated and Batman: The Brave and The Bold style fare.

It's funny, I was just talking to a guy at work day before yesterday about that very "for kids" argument Lucas used on the prequels. He supposedly designed the Original Trilogy as a modern mythology for kids and look at how (relatively) more sophisticated it is. Pandering and patronizing clearly don't count as making something palatable and interesting to children.
