It's okay that TERMINATOR is PG-13 now... because they cast a rapper!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Catty headline aside, I actually liked Common's work in AMERICAN GANGSTER, but this casting announcement on the heels of the PG-13 bombshell they dropped yesterday just doesn't do anything in me to inspire confidence.
Christian Bale as adult John Conner really gets me pumped up, but I just don't know how it's not going to come off as a waste now. Common isn't all that bad, but his casting doesn't change the sinking feeling I now have about this franchise. God, I want this to be kickass. Is it too much to ask the movie gods to smack some sense into Halycon?

In the UK, the previous Terminator movies have been rated thus:
Terminator: 18
Terminator 2: 15
Terminator 3: 12
As far as Im aware they were the exact same cuts that were released in the US so surley it's just relative. For many the series has been headed in a teen friendly direction ever since T2. Infact if T2 was released today i think it would get the 12 rating in the Uk too.
At the end of the day, the thing that will kill this film is McG, not the level of violence or lack thereof. -

They've already said pretty much Bale isn't the focus of the movie. I interpret this as a minimum screen time. Probably 20min tops. I'd laugh my ass off if he has the same screen time as the older John did in T2.
The rapper is here for the 'aww HELL naaaaaw' moment where the robots are driving a car at 150mph after the heroes. -
I guess that means rock music in all the actions scenes and lots of explosions to hide the lack of story. How'd they con Bale into working on this again?
I hate it when they stunt cast rappers to appeal to the "urban" demographic, especially rappers who think they're so important they don't need a surname. -

Fox pumps out genre films with the understanding that fans like us will show up no matter what, so they need to cater to the rest of the audience. In other words, people who don't know anything about film. I think it's been their business plan for some time. I, for one, will refuse to see this film if news like this keeps coming out.

What bothers me is what these decisions say about how the film is being made. Fox has an awful track record with genre films and they've proven time and again that they care more about the bottom dollar than they do about the quality of their product. It was his baby from the beginning (aside from the fact that he robbed the concept off of someone else, something that had to be settled in court...) and so when T3 was going ahead he should have stepped in and at the very least exec produced. That way he could pick up the phone and disagree with certain decisions being made in order to preserve the greatness of his creation, even if he wasn't in the director's chair.

But I really wish rappers would stick to music (even though I can't stand hip hop) and filmmakers would stick to using trained actors. Every so often you get the rare musician who come along and has acting chops (Frank Sinatra, Will Smith, the Wahlberg brothers, David Bowie) but then you get something like that Outkast guy in Revolver which was an excruciating performance making an agonizing movie even worse. Casting rappers in movies is nothing but a desperate ploy by the studio to attract a wider audience. Unfortunately for fanboys, it's attracting the doucebag audience.And I presume Christian Bale has already signed a water tight contract to star in the movie (which began shooting yesterday) so he's obligated to suffer through this drek.

As we all know, Uncle L is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) and I think he could give a Terminator a run for its money, particularly while wearing his Kangol hat (which is like a shark's fin). I'm not too familiar with this Common, but I have to ask: Is he as hard as hell? Can he battle anybody he don't care who you tell? Does he excell, etc. and so on? I don't know, Ain't It Cool Friends. I'm guessing that the implication of the headline is that after hiring McG and shooting for a PG-13, the casting of a rapper is another indicator that this might not be the type of Terminator film us geeks would like to see. Musicians in general (not just rappers) can't act. Recently rappers are the ones trying to make the leap to film so they get most of the blame, but it's a universal truth that musicians should stick to music and actors should stick to acting. Hell, Quint even defended some of Common's acting. Some of the comments on this board have been outrageous and offensive, but that's not Quint's fault. I'm especially amused by all the "hip hop sucks" statements made by people who have probably only heard ten seconds of the crap they play on the radio. Newsflash: there's a lot more to hip hop than what they play on the radio.

He's merely saying that when you put these guys in its usually to appeal to their core audience ie. people between 13 (PG-13) and 17 (R)! Quint wasn't being a racist, just voicing his disappointment over a project that has been going down the crapper since they greenlighted it.First off, they give it to a director who is mostly about the flash and spectacle. We Are Marshall wasn't terrible, but we all know that T4 is going to lean more into Charlie's Angel's territory than college football drama. Second, they pick second rate screenwriters to pen the script and when that happens, 10 times out of 10 you get AvP and Ghost Rider. Third, they are catering to a crowd of people who wasn't even born when the first two movies came out by watering down the rating and casting people that the teen crowd is familiar with.Common is not a bad actor. He was probably the best thing about Smoking Aces. Ludacris has acting talent too. But look at Iron Man. Rather than cast a rapper as Rhodes for the kidlets, they went with a guy who is an actor by trade and has an Oscar nomination to boot.All Quint was saying was that this project is full of the same warning signs that we saw in the development stages of AvP, Transformers and Spider Man 3 and we were all bang on there.

The 'attitude' you talk of is not even apparent in the rappers Mos Def and Common. In fact, they are actually two of the most 'non-attitude' rappers in Hip-Hop history.
For the record though, Common doesn't have a fanbase that translates to Box Office numbers, so that he was cast as opposed to an Eminem or Fifty Cent (which even I would have been upset about), probably means he read for the part and was actually good. He really surprised me in Smokin' Aces.
I thought Terminator 3 was garbage anyway. To be perfectly honest (outside of the actual T-1000) I didn't much like T2. I thought the certificate 15 (which they gave it in UK) was an absolute abomination. I knew the grit of the first film would be compromised.
So they done destroyed this franchise for me over a decade ago. Go ahead, cast Ja Rule and call it a day. -

I was a little concerned after the initial casting announcements and not seeing a rapper. What a relief. Now they can get Eva Mendes and Shia in the movie. Whew, we dodged a tough one there. You don't know what you are talking about. Rap is not simple and cheap, in fact it is hard and expensive simply because of the amount of samples used- hence licensing is required for each track, and this is a painful, time consuming process. Having said that, the problem with this is that casting a rapper (especially before the script is completed) screams MARKETING DECISION, as does everything else in this abortion: PG13, McG, and now common

As a black man, I somewhat agree with BlackJack, but also kinda see where everyone is coming from. I do think that the headline was written in a way to automatically let people know that they cast a black person who raps in this film. I dont think anyone read the headline and even gave it a second thought that this rapper was anything but black. I think what Quint did was simply a subconscious lapse similiar to when Capone labeled a whole set of films as "black films". Dont think it was intentionally racist but definitely shows some sort of racial bias. However, the decision to cast Common(who isnt all that good an actor, he just plays the serious guy who can occassionally crack a smile) was no doubt stunt casting by the studio to get the urban audience in. But I'm not surprised by this. I was expecting it. Remember MCG was the guy who at one time was in charge of developing Superman and wanted to make Beyonce Knowles Lois Lane. So I was a little disappointed to not hear about any such casting travesties with this project.

Since we are like on the subject of racism here...I have a question. I go to a gym in Lower Manhattan. I'm usually the only black male there amongst mostly white men and women and a couple of asians. Not only do I generally feel uncomfortable and unwanted there, I notice that a lot of the white people tend to either move when I use machines or weights near them and the people on the treadmills always seem to abruptly stop when I use the one next to them or people generally just totally bypass anything next to me. It seems very real to me but am I just being over sensitive?

About working out in a Lower Manhattan gym and feeling like white people (and a few Asians) are nervously or purposefully giving you a wide berth... there's probably something to that. They might not be doing it on purpose, and they might all be friendly, inclusive people, but sometimes offputting (for you) dynamics like that happen. Maybe if you ask for their help in spotting or something, they'll assist and get to know you a little. In my experience, this is always the way to break any ice.

I am not a lover of rap, but not only is Common a decent rapper, he's a pretty good actor. He's actually a pretty good person in real life. He was Piven's bodyguard in Smokin' Aces. So i think people are taking this casting a little too literally. This may not be that bad. I'm more concerned about McG's take on the whole thing.

Like others have said, who knows if they are really avoiding you or if you are just imagining it. But Hawaiian has a valid point: you don't have to wait for the roid freaks to finish. And Hawaiian, of course racism still exists in this country. I've been down South where it's pretty blatant. It usually begins as soon as I walk into the gym. Little things like I'll notice several non black people walking right by the check in counter without showing the desk person their idea or membership card, and the same people I see week in and week out practically flag me down to get my membership badge and like investigate it as if they can't believe I'm there. Its just things like that that bother me. Or if you walk into an upscale clothing store or something and people suddenly come up to you and start asking you about items and when you tell them you dont work there they seem shocked. Anyway, back on target...what bothers me about casting Common is that there are so many struggling black actors out there dying to get a role in something where they are not simply a thug, and Hollywood still goes for the name and not necessarily the talent or credentials.

I think everyone is overreacting just a little bit. So we don't get as many f-bombs, no titties (bummer), and a few less graphic bloody sequences. I know it's stupid to go for a PG-13 rating for marketing and merchandising purposes, but it's not the end of the frickin' world and it doesn't devalue the excellent casting thus far, namely Christian Bale. Personally, I think Warner Brothers will eventually announce that the movie will be an R rated flick. Even the production company said they wouldn't deny that that could happen in the long run.
Regardless, relax a bit. They haven't even shot the movie yet. Think back to T2... it was actually a pretty light R rated flick. A few edited shots, less f-bombs, and it would have been a hard pg-13. -

But as long as I've been reading AICN, which is probably twelve years, I haven't read one black person rip country music by saying "it's all the same." Not once. One of my favorite groups of the 90's (Limp Bizkit, please dont flame me) gradually went from using actual instruments to becoming almost a rap band. A very bad rap band at that. It was so bad Wes lef them. I say that just to say that Hip Hop isnt the only form of music becoming easier to make without the use of actual instruments.

Blame Cameron for making the Terminator into a kids movie with T2- the only good one was the first. I mean, how can T4 be any worse than T2-3D? T3, whilst its tone was all over the place and there were some cringeworthy moments, there was about 30 minutes of gold in there. Think of it as a brand new series and you might get some enjoyment out of it- plus the word I've heard is that the script for T4 is pretty damn good.

when rock/metal/alternative groups do covers its considered cool but when hip hop artist sample people look down upon it as stealing. Rock bands steal all the time. Listen to the riffs from Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Dani California vs. Tom Petty's Last Dance With Mary Jane. Same song different lyrics. Granted the sampling era was getting a bit out of hand in during the mid 90's Puffy Era, but thats over with I hope. Anyways, screw T4, gimme Robocop redux instead.

I respectfully disagree. Covering a song is just that..doing the song again and making minor changes but youre still outright doing a song thats already been done. Big case and Point...Rihanna did Umbrella(I hated it) and like..while that version was still in the top ten...Mandy Moore came out and redid the song...while the original was still in heavy rotation. And as far as sampling, they may use the same beat but trust me they arent using the same lyrics.

Terminator 3 already destroyed the franchise: terrible, unoriginal, derivative movie that completely reverses the core message of the Terminator movies ("No fate" in T2 vs. "It is inevitable" in T3").
McG already destroyed himself beyond redemption: He could go back in time and make Citizen Kane, The Godfather, and Star Wars and it still wouldn't come close to balancing out two abominable Charlie's Angels movies.
PG-13 already destroyed cinema: the middle-ground between kid-friendly and not-appropriate-for-kids movies has muddled both beyond recognition, and both have gravitated to the still-growing black hole that is PG-13. Studios know that 99% of all parents will take their kids, no matter what age, to a PG-13 movie, and having the higher rating won't diminish box-office so even Disney and Harry Potter movies are going PG-13. And they know that PG-13 will generally out-perform R at the box office, so Die Hard and Terminator movies are going PG-13. It's time for the MPAA to tear down the current system and put in place a new one, and it's time for studios to have the balls to release movies intended for grown-ups.
But, regardless, T4 is going to suck. Hopefully it will be for Bale what Reign of Fire was: immediately forgotten. -

It seems like when black culture does stuff its perceived as negative, but when the majority does the exact same thing its considered a positive. WHen african americans sample music they are stealing, when everyone else does it they are covering. When african americans fight its criminal, when the majority fights they are just working out their differences. when black people talk at the movies they are being rude and ghetto, but when everyone else does it they are having a good time at the movies and being fan boys. My two cents on the sampling debate: sampling is part of hip-hop. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. But sampling is also part of electronica in general, not just hip-hop. Remixes aren't relegated to the realm of hip-hip, and anyone who says otherwise has no clue what they're talking about. Downtempo, drum n' bass, fat beats, and other styles of electronica all generate thousands and thousands of remixes a year worldwide So if anyone is blaming hip-hop for the emergence of sampling as an art form, then you're being ignorant. Seriously, take a look around and stop living in 1998. We've come a long way since then.
And, by the way, Common is a crossover guy with roots in the mainstream and the underground. He swears sometimes, eloquently speaks his mind, and pushes subjects some people consider "ghetto," but he isn't gangsta. Never has been, never will be. Of course, if you're one of those people who sees all hip-hop as being the same, you'll lump him in with the lowest Common denominator out of pure cultural laziness. -

I'm not sure if Robocop 2 has aged well, but when I saw that movie for the first time I crapped out food from 1980. The cop getting sliced down the middle with the kid watching, said kid opening up on cops with an automatic, the doctor holding Cain's skull after his brain was removed, Cain taking his girlfriend by the head and shaking her like a rag doll and then the finale where everyone was a target. Jesus, that movie and Total Recall in the same summer. What a time to be alive.

That's my favorite fight. And if you see Spidey 2.1, you'll see even more train fight and building fight (after the bank robbery), and the extra stuff is cool. Shit, in 2.1 Spidey is HIT by a friggin' oncoming train. It's pretty brutal. You'll also be treated to a funny alternate version of the elevator scene with Mr. "Nice Spidey Costume...Where'd Ya Get It?"

That was an OK picture but Bale was incredible. Talk about channeling Pacino from Scarface. With regards to Rescue Dawn, I agree with the post above that said it was handled too light-heartedly. [SPOILER]: Although I could guess, I didn't even know what happened to Steve Zahn's character until I looked it up on Wiki. If he gets whacked by a rice farmer then show it in detail rather than Steve-o screaming as the farmer bears down on him and Bale goes tearing off. Hertzog didn't need to make it torture porn, but he should have handled it more graphically. These men were POWs under brutal conditions after all.

Christ, most of them are actually good actors. The Game and Common were great in Street Kings. Eminem's performance was decent in 8 Mile though he WAS basically playing himself. And even 50 Cent was alright in Get Rich or Die Tryin. Common = Terminator for this one. I'll bet money on it.

Its not that Equilibrium sucked a fat one or anything, its just that it was..I dont know..not for me I guess. It opened up with a bang. The scene where he took the cops shotguns and blasted them full on in the face made my jaw drop....but its like the more it went on the more droll and monotonous and boring it became..which was kind of the opposite of the character in te film who began to develop emotion. Maybe that was the point...the movie becomes increasingly boring and lifeless while the characters begin to develop....and once again..I was waiting for the battle between Bale and Diggs and..it wa anti-climactic to say the least. I WAS PISSED!!!

Honestly all this vitriol for a franchise that blew it's load with the second film, the plot of which was a mess do to more temporal paradoxes than it's worth the effort to list. Granted, it's overwhelming cool factor more than made up for that, but T3 was a bigger waste of time than fucking a fat drunk bitch. As for Fox. clearly all they and any other studio care about is the bottom line and they figure PG-13 gets them the most asses in the seats. Finally get over yourselves. Common's thespian skills more than qualify him to be in this piece of crap. I don't recall any of the first three having bravura performances or grousing about how any of the cast were screwed out of an Oscar. You should all be more worried about what possessed 'serious' thespian Bale to sign on for the buggy ride. And, in closing: vote with your dollar. I never saw Clooney's Batman. Common is a hip-hop artist, not a gangsta rapper. He has appeared in several films and most importantly, he has done roles outside of the hip-hop mold.
