MST3K!! LOST!! SUNNY!! 4400!! SOUTH PARK!! TREATMENT!! SEXY!! PYTHON!! PRISONER!! HercVault!!

Published at:  May 07, 2008 10:46:23 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Harry Knowles has no love for “Mystery Science Theater 3000” so I assume he skipped “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie” -- but I suspect if he forced himself to watch the big-screen version of the cult cable franchise he might reconsider.

I remember the MST3K movie as the funniest thing I saw in a cinema in 1996, with mockery -- of the perfectly compelling 1955 Universal sci-fi thriller “This Island Earth” -- that left my face runny with tears. Unlike the weekly TV show, which was always slapped together in a matter of days, the jokes in the big-screen version were (if I’m remembering correctly) honed and tested during a long series of live screenings. The result provides one of the highest laugh-per-minute ratios this side of the original “Airplane.”

The final season of “The 4400” picked up in a world rich with a superhero-chemical called “promicin,” which was developed from examining the physiology of the title characters. Anyone could inject themselves the widely circulated black market sci-fi substance, but only half of those who did gained a superpower; the other half just died. I thought it a supercool premise. Even if you survived, you could still end up with a crappy superpower. The lure of promicin was so strong, even members of law enforcement decided to give it whirl.

“Crossing Jordan” was the medical examiner drama Tim Kring created and oversaw prior to creating and overseeing “Heroes.” Damon Lindelof, who went on to co-create “Lost,” was on its writing staff. If you judge “Jordan” less than twice as exciting as “Heroes” or “Lost,” keep in mind that “Jordan,” unlike “Heroes,” didn’t have “Pushing Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller on the writing staff during its first season. And “Jordan” never made use of the writing talents of J.J. Abrams, David Fury, Javier Grillo-Marxauch, Carlton Cuse, Drew Goddard, Brian K. Vaughn or any of the other “Lost” scribes.

It starred tall, skinny “Law & Order” vet Jill Hennessey, always markedly easier on the eyes than Jack Klugman.

The set is loaded with extras, including:

* Deleted scenes from eight of the 23 first-season episodes.

* Commentaries by Kring, director-producer Allan Arkush and composers Wendy & Lisa (formerly of Prince’s Revolution; subsequently of “Heroes”) on four episodes, including the pilot and season finale.

* “A Conversation With Series Creator Tim Kring, Producer/Director Allan Arkush and Producer Dennis Hammer.”

* “Jill Hennessey and Allan Arkush talk about Jordan.”

* “Steve Valentine, Ravi Kapoor and Kathryn Hahn Talk With Allan Arkush.”

* “Allan Arkush and Tim Kring Talk With Miguel Ferrer.”

    by drath

I'm floored. I really thought Nickelodeon would air the episodes before putting them onto DVD. What is this, some kind of test to see if they don't need the network anymore? Hey, more power to them then! But I hope they realize many fans would rather wait until the complete season box set and not buy the individual volumes.

Private Practive - The Complete First Season

    by big jim

Shouldn't that read "The Strike-Shortened First Season"? It's not really complete, just what they had done. What's with Terry Hatcher's face on that Desperate Housewives cover? Is she morphing into some kind of demon? Is that why there is fire all around them? Is there a hellgate on Wisteria Lane? Does Mary Alice, who narrates every episode, finally return from hell to create her army of demonic harpies and take over the world? If so, think Herc will watch?

    by danielkurland

It says the set is 60 dollars, which is cheaper than most of HBO's releases, but this show had almost 50 episodes. Is each storyline being released as its own set? I'm super curious about this. Also, Mad Men's set is a lighter? Fucking fantastic.

new to ABC DVDs. They've been using terms like that for years. All it means is some episodes include deleted scenes. Wonder if anyone will fall for it. Like all those who bought the "unrated" version of Girl Next Door expecting a naked Elisha Cuthbert. As Nelson would say, "Ha HA!"

The "Extended" and "Expanded" edition is not new for ABC. They've been doing it for years, and used stuff like "Extra Juicy" for DH and "The Full Mystery" or something like that for Lost. I think it's hilarious, as it's the only version of the DVDs released, and just an example of how stupid buzzwords can influence sales. It probably works as well, because some idiot sees it, and thinks they're getting something extra.

    by largojr

Are fucking wana-be jerkoffs. MST3K had a motto.. and it was known among the REAL fans before the show got monster popular. "We don't ask Who is going to get this joke, we know the RIGHT people will get this joke." It was an in-crowd thing that got dogpiled with posers more wrapped up in being part of the club, then enjoying the moment. Thats why Joel left, because Jim had ownership (purchased in trade for funding Joels work), and wanted the show changed to be accessible to a wider audience. At that point it stopped being about 'smart & weird', and started being about fart jokes. Fuck Mike in his bloated balding ass. Cinamatic Titanic rawks!!!!

i like both Joel and Mike equally but objectively...

    by prossor

joel was the better host. Neither was responsible for the humor, it was a whole team of writers from the beginning. If you dont like Joel because you think his episodes are unfunny got news for you, Mike was always the head writer from the very beginning. The team just grew better doing jokes. Personally my favorite era of the show was late Joel/early Mike period (seasons 4-7).

    LargoJr I remember that quote

    by pervomatic

It was from a behind the scenes documentary about the show back when it was on Comedy Central and actually was funny. I have it on tape somewhere from when they ran it during the Turkey Day marathon. It was a lot smarter when Joel was the host but then Mike took over and it just got dumb and silly. When Mike left, it got even worse and dragged on far longer than it should have. During the last few seasons on the SciFi channel, I would see bits of it from time to time and just cringe at how awful it was at that point.

I love that just the MENTION of MST3K brings out the passion of talkbackers. "Joel!" "YOU SUCK! MIKE!" Ah, platform wars. If I was 20 years younger I might give a damn. As it is, I love both. Adore both. Am not embarrassed to gush over both.

Day the Earth Froze & Terror from the Year 5000

    by prossor

Those Russians really knew how to make great looking movies, all of Aleksandr Ptushko's fantasies like The Sword and the Dragon, Magic Voyage of Sinbad and Day the Earth Froze with all their puppet monsters and eastern european landscapes are a treat for the eyes, funny thing is they really did use hundreds of extras for the battle scenes in those days so all those people running over hills werent CGI... i'll take his movies over the LOTR crap anyday too. Terror From The Year 5000 was a funny episode, i like all those jokes of the engaged couple appearing more like squabbling brother and sister while the new hunky scientist guy starts flrting with the lady after a big fight with the other guy and as he's sitting peed off one of them quips "so we'll talk about the marriage ceremony later ok honey? honey??"

    mst3k movie

    by soup74

i remember being a HUGE mst3k fan (like prossor said, the best seasons were 4-7...well, maybe 2-3 also) anyway, when the movie came out i was so excited and was lucky enough to find it in an specialty theatre in chicago. now i live in the chicago suburbs, so while that sounds close, if you're not from here you dont realize how much of a pain it is to commute to chicago from the burbs. i live 20 miles away from chicago, but the movie started at 7, which means i have to leave my house by 4 to sit in traffic for 2 hours (no exaggeration, chicago people can attest) then once you make it to the theatre you need to pay for parking, usually around $20 (once again, no joke, its about $20 to park for a couple of hours in chicago) then add ticket price..which back then was $9 (yep..1996, $9 ticket prices already) but hey, this was mst3k, so it would have to be worth it, right? hate to say it, but it wasnt. it wasnt a bad movie, it just wasnt very good either. (although the chicago crowd got a big kick out of the "hey i can see the Cubs losing from up here!" joke) the mst3k movie was my first step away from being the rabid, card-carrying fan club member that i was at the time.sorry, that was a long time ago, but i just needed to vent.

    by prossor

i liked those seasons too, in fact there wasnt a bad season, mst3k never jumped any shark just was reduced in quality/creativity with the jump to scifi channel. in fact my favorite joel episode (castle of fu manchu) is from season 3. but if i were held at gunpoint and asked what part of teh show was my fav it would be the mid-section (4-7). honestly they peaked in theater and host segments, it was a wonderful time.
