Report on "Harsh Realm" (Chris Carter), "Roswell", "Action!", and "The West Wing" ((all new Fall shows)) !!!

SPOILER ALERT !!

Glen here...

Wow.

Usually, THE FALL SEASON coverage on Coaxial starts off rather late in the summer,
resulting in a mad and frenzied dash to post as many reviews and previews as possible before
the shows actually hit the air. Last year, we didn't even get it all done in time!

This year? Well, this year seems different. A little more organized and timely. Maybe it's the
quality of my sourcing. Maybe it's just plain luck.

Either way, here we go. The first of what will (hopefully) be many pieces about the new Fall
shows over the next few weeks. FYI - I haven't personally received any of these programs yet,
but I am happy to pass on various the notes and reactions from various AICN readers who have
already stumbled upon some screeners of the new season shows.

For example, this message comes from TANGINA. Tangine wrote in with a few thoughts
(some detailed, some vague) about a few of this Fall's new shows. See what you
think...

Tangina wrote:

HARSH REALM - new Fox series from Chris "X-Files" Carter, will air
Fridays at
9 (in the now cancelled Millenium time slot).

Think of this show as a
Matrix with more possibilities. It has a very similar set-up. Our
hero is
recruited from the army to take part in a virtual reality battle
simulator,
only once he gets in, he learns that there is no way out.

The army has
placed him, like thousands before him, into the "game" in order to find
and
kill Santiago, our "bad guy", who has taken over the game and can enter
and
leave at will.

Inside the game, he partners up with Pinnochio, played by
DB
Sweeney, a Han Solo type who is his guide, teaching him the rules of the
game
as he goes. Suffice it
to
say that all may not be as it seems, and - from the pilot anyway - it's
entirely possible that the world we thought at first was real was also
VR.

Chris Carter really knows how to spin this stuff. And, while I'm on the subject of Chris
Carter...

ROSWELL (formerly ROSWELL HIGH) - an interesting story in that Regency
(the
producers of the show) brought the show to The WB when FOX didn't seem
that
high on it, and The WB picked it up for 22 episodes, Wednesday at 9.

Think
of this show as The X-Files meets Dawson's Creek (but cool). Basically,
3 aliens, who were in pods (not born) when the crash occurred in Roswell,
are
posing as regular teens at Roswell High.

One of the "human" girls in
school
is accidentally shot and one of the aliens heals her, thus exposing
himself
to her (as an alien, not "exposing himself" - this isn't cable).

The
kids
think they are the only aliens alive, but come to suspect that there is
another, somewhat older alien who survived the crash, is in town as well.
There's also the Sheriff, whose has his own reasons for discovering the
truth
about aliens in his town.

Strong possibilities here.

ACTION (Fox, Thursday 9:30pm) - Jay Mohr stars as a real obnoxious movie
producer. Sitcom. Also stars Buddy Hackett (!)

THE WEST WING - (NBC, Wed 9pm) - From Aaron Sorkin (writer of my favorite
show, Sports Night) Takes place in the White House with Rob Lowe (very
good in this, by the way) as the communcations director for the President
(Martin Sheen - also very good in this). The show is more about the
people
who work for the President than about the President himself. Funny and
smart.

When are Fox going to realise that Carter is a one trick pony?

    Harsh Realms

    by bill mulder

Despite what the guy above has to say I hope that Harsh Realms is good because I think filling Millennium's shoes is a tall order. Chris Carter is not a one trick pony. He has given the world the best TV of the decade.

    Harsh Realm, indeed

    by serdar yegulalp

"Harsh realm" -- the phrase -- originally came from a sheet of bogus slang foisted on the New York Times Style section a few years back. It was allegedly a synonym for "bummer". I wonder which side of the media-hype fence Carter was on when he picked up on this...

    Harsh Realm lineage

    by augiedb

I don't think you can claim Chris Carter is riding some sort of hip slang term to TV here. HARSH REALM is based on James Hudnall's comic book, which was out quite a number of years ago. (Early 90s, maybe?) It just happens to jive nicely with the timing of THE MATRIX's success. That's why they've decided to promote the hell out of this one. I wouldn't trust FOX, though. They had a VR show once four years ago which they never gave a chance. (VR.5, which covered much the same ground, albeit in a different way. Now on VHS from Rhino.)

3rd Rock from the Sun and X-files are already passe. Is it too much to ask for a little imagination?

    Harsh Realm Comments

    by savant

I found the pilot for Harsh Realm to be a pleasant surprise. I was prepared to be disappointed, but it didn't.

I found myself quite engaged and look forward to seeing more. The production values are high and Carter cleverly gives us only a teasing look at the characters and the premise without laying out too much. It left me curious to see more.

Of the Fall pilots I've seen so far (West Wing, Roswell, Now & Again, and Action are the others) and the first two episodes of Crusade, it is, by far, my favorite.

I found it to be much, much better than VR5, which I wasn't a big fan of, after giving it a chance.

Harsh Realm sounds cool. 1999 is certainly the real of virtual reality. The Thirteenth Floor opens today.

it's good to see DB Sweeney back. After "Strange Luck" I thought we would never see him on T.V. again(A great show if anyone knows where to get it on video let me know please). If this show combines the best of "VR5" and "S.L." then it's going to be a hit. No dout about it!!!!

    !Let's be original!

    by phr33k0ut

Come on, I haven't seen an original show since 70's reruns. _X-Files_ = _NightStalker_ -- _Millenium_ = did someone see an advanced copy of _Profiler_? -- _Harsh_Realm_ = hacked up comic book plot.
I agree with Dalfanar - Hollywood needs to come up with some original shows. Wait, "Hollywood originality"? If that's not an oxymoron, I don't know what is.
Think, you profiteering fat cats! Use that noggin!
