    too little too late

    by smoke monster loves kate

I was wondering when superspeed would show up as a power. it's one of the cooler possible powers out there because from it, one could derive phasing through shit (a la Flash) and flying (just go very very fast).not to mention being faster than people can think (if squaring off against telekinetically powered individuals).but who am I kidding, Heroes isn't going to explore any of that. there's already too much baggage from old guys and they haven't done anything new in second season. Hiro, Sylar, Peter had their powers explored nicely in first season, and in one or two portions of the ending of Season 2 we got to see them 'use' their powers in a more robust manner but such moments are far too few and inbetween.what's it say about your show when one of the most badass guys isn't even superpowered (HRG).Maya's character killed season 2 i think. that time could've been spent on other people/powers.and is it just me or is Peter like a very bad RPG player? he just whores one ability at a time until the novelty wears off or he gets a new one. not to mention the existence of someone who's gonna have ALL powers is a plot-breaker. the only person who can take him on is the Haitian.and how the hell is Claire (or Peter for that matter) ever going to have a normal life? why does she bother? she's going to outlive any guy she marries, any children she has. that'll be weird.

As one big in-joke. Actually I think it's thematically more fun for a male to be the speedster, but hey, it's not exactly important. I'm curious to see if they'll actually bring it in a third season. They bombed it so badly with season 2, and I fear they don't have it in them to deliver on the FX-blasting super fights that season 1 primed us all for and then didn't deliver. The should be forced to watch the first three seasons of Buffy to see how you properly pay off on action adventure build ups on a TV budget.

I can't figure anything I want to see next season...

    by prof. pop-cult

Season 2 was so bad, upon reflecting on it further, that I cannot name a single character or thing that I want to see again. Reiterating and expounding further on some things that my fellow TBers here have brought up:The Company. This institution is boring and, frankly, not interesting, mysterious or even cool anymore. Maybe a new mysterious institution needs to be introduced into the series.Peter and Hiro. Both have become too powerful. In Season 3, I think they need to introduce limitations to their powers. (For example, they could make it where Peter can only use one power at a time, and the more powers he collects, the weaker each one becomes. Also, they should make it so he can get rid of an individual power when he needs to.)Claire. Claire is just boring. I don't care about her high school drama and trying to live a "normal life." At times watching her arc felt like watching a slightly edgier version of a tween series on the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon. I'm so annoyed with Claire and her boyfriend West that I would prefer they not even be featured in Season 3 at all -- don't even bother with writing them out of the show.Elle. I'm assuming that she's off the show now, as Kristen Bell's career in movies may be taking off and she possibly no longer has the time nor interest to come back. Can't blame her, as her character was not only under-utilized but also not written well.I always felt that Heroes should introduce a character who is the analog to Batman/Iron Man. Some people argued that HRG was that kind of character, but I disagree -- he's simply a variant on the MIB archetype. I think Heroes could use a character, team or organization (like SHIELD?) that consists of normal humans who are black-ops types, who use high-tech gadgets.Anyways, there is much that is wrong with Heroes now, but also so much potential in this series still. However, I'm totally lacking faith in Kring and his fellow producers. And the fact that not many people are writing on this TB should concern the producers -- interest in this series among its core demographic is at a standstill.

    I agree, Prof, although

    by drath

I hold out hope for Claire, West, and Elle. I fully agree about the company, once Linderman was dead (and Eric Roberts with him), they seemed finished to me. Bringing in Warner Brandis didn't fix that because he's not threatening at all. I don't buy him as the evil father figure he's supposed to be (too bad they couldn't have used Lost's Michael Emerson). But season 2 was supposed to be the season about the previous generation, and as bacci40 points out, we learned NOTHING about most of them. We didn't even learn the powers for the Petrellis or Hiro's Dad!!! Joanna Cassidy played another elder and she was there just long enough to get killed (which got very tiresome). It's arguable she didn't even have powers! What kind of generation is that? Finally, I think the over powered-ness of Hiro and especially Peter is a huge problem because both character were effectively removed from the action and rendered as idiots to keep them from basically ending the season's "arc" right away. I think most fans want to see the core characters working together finally, not adrift in still more separate seemingly unrelated viniettes. These Heroes aren't even as united as the characters in LOST! After season 2, I'd also agree that HRG is no longer a potential Batman character because he's back to working for the company. I think they need to get more imaginative with these "super powers" and not depend on it simply being the show's unnamed version of the X gene. If they did that, I think it'd open up more possibilities for heroes with unique characters rather than players who are completely defined by their fill-in-the-blank powers. This latest news about a speedster doesn't suggest that's changing.

    Powers without limitations...

    by prof. pop-cult

There needs to be a rule that goes "the more you use your power, the more there will be a consequences to your body or mind". So this is how they could impose limitations (which would result in better storytelling):
Hiro. He can go forward or back in time, but the more he does this, the longer and harder it takes for him to return to his starting point. Constant time traveling weakens his superpower, so he must use it wisely. Also, it turns out for some mysterious reason that he cannot save certain people from death, no matter how much he keeps trying. Thus, this would imply that there is a "Fate" mechanism that prevents him from creating too many paradoxes.Peter. As I've already said, this would be a relatively easy fix. Make it so Peter discovers that he can only hold a limited number of powers. He's like a hard drive -- he has a large superpower storage capacity, but it has its limits (including the more he loads up, the slower and weaker each individual power is). Have him discover that he can get rid of an individual power when he needs to -- but when he gets rid of it, he cannot get it back, unless he copies it again from the original super-powered person. They need to think of Peter's capability like the way a hard drive works.Sylar. He can absorb as many powers as he wants -- but the more powers he gets, the more unstable all his powers become, and the more difficult they are for him to control. Also, the more powers he has, the more they erode his mental state. (So they could use this to explain why it is he lost all his powers at the end of Season 1 -- he had the equivalent of a "hard drive crash".)There -- I just devised limitations to these three characters' powers, and I did so based on what has already been established with their powers across the past two seasons. So I have not violated the logic that the writers have already defined. Tim Kring is free to use my suggestions.

Cheerverine's Blood as a Reset Button....

    by mr. profit

That's what finally did it for me. I was mad throughout Season 2 with the show, but when they started using Claire's blood to bring people back I was done. When u establish that you can bring people back from the dead easily with a simple cure all plot device, the stakes are no longer high. And those "Tonight. Someone. Will... DIE!!!!" promos lose all relevance. The show has potential and its frustrating to see potential so easily wasted. In this talkback alone I have seen better story ideas than all of season 2.

There should also be limitations with Claire's/Adam's blood...

    by prof. pop-cult

They should introduce a consequence that comes with using their blood on other people. I have no solid idea right now, but the writers really should look into this. Again, the mantra for the writers of Heroes should be: "Using these powers, especially frequently, come with consequences."

    Reply to Talkback

  • May 05, 2008 6:33:14 PM CDT

Okay, here's one idea about their blood...

    by prof. pop-cult

People who have been given Claire's or Adam's blood develop a super resistance to viruses, but this resistance causes superbugs to reside and strengthen within them -- thus, people who have been saved with their blood will become Patient X vectors who can rapidly spread deadly/killer viruses to other people. To repeat over and over again, until hopefully the writers and Tim Kring finally gets it: There MUST be consequences to the use of these powers. Dealing with these consequences will help to encourage better storytelling.

Example of storytelling based on these limits...

    by prof. pop-cult

Here's a quick example of a story arc that could come from one of the limits I imposed: HRG and Nathan would learn that they are a threat to humanity, since they were both saved with the same kind of blood (Claire's and Adam's). This could allow for the two of them to team up, deal with one another, and decide that they have to go away, isolate themselves from the rest of humanity. Meanwhile, people (and maybe another mysterious organization) are trying to find them, to contain them and maybe exploit them (use them as chemical weapons against a country or other group of people). The SHIELD-like organization I suggested in one of my posts above could be intent on hunting them down and killing them in order to prevent them from becoming disease vectors.

Prof Pop-Cult, Kristen's not gone yet...

    by pennsy

Forgetting Sarah Marshall surpassed the $60 million mark in worldwide boxoffice receipts and is still in the top 5 as Forbidden Kingdom and Harold/Kumar drop like the bad habits they are. She still has 5 episodes left to film, then it's hope and pray time. But it just might be the case that Bell has a brighter future than Heroes can offer her. I just hope Elle doesn't become Sylar-fodder.

As an aside, I talked with Kristen at the FSM post-world premiere afterparty last month. I asked her what episode she's submitting for Emmy consideration and where would she aim for, category-wise. I was hoping for Supporting Actress, because I cringe at the thought of 3 slots going to Grey's Anatomy (Heigl, Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson). She told me she's entering Guest Actress in a Drama, and that Cautionary Tales was going to be her submission tape. Of the 3 nomination-caliber tapes she had (IMO, anyway; Four Months Ago and Powerless were the others), CT was/is her best chance. Her performance in FSM, though, shows her ultimate future is on the big screen.

Nah, they need regular transfusions of Claire's blood

    by drath

That's my solution to that "problem." HRG would need to keep getting "regenerative" blood from Claire, and she'll give it to him because he's her daddy, but this creates an obvious control over him and her both for the company, and also establishes a serious problem with giving the blood to anyone and everyone who we want to bring back. That said, I HATE the someone will die gimmick. They either kill off someone who is dying too soon, or someone who can't die fast enough. Either way, it's not a good trick pony, and the more they use it the more I loathe it. They do this all the time on DC so now it has no power. Superboy/Kon-El and Darkseid are as dead as Robert Downey Jr.'s career five years ago. So all that does is slap us in the face if we liked them AND if we wanted death to have teeth. Kill rarely but make it fucking HURT when you do--that's how they should work that. Did anyone care when Nathan and Nikki died? I was frankly indifferent as both were less interesting in season 2. Without the potential to be the President, Nathan was just lost as a character. But I digress...

    Season II was good

    by chilli815

Disagree? You're welcome to. But calling it crap and demanding Kring's head just makes you sound like an asshole. Let's ignore the fact that what we saw was only ever meant to be 50% of the entire season, and move onto how people's annoyance with Peter getting amnesia is one of the weakest arguements for hating a show that has ever existed. Why? Because S1 was about how dangerous his power was due to the fact that he was an emotionally stunted human being, and S2 was about showing that he had to be removed from his emotionally stunted lifestyle in order to figure out how to properly use it. In S2 he can multi-use his powers, which is a huge leap for the character. While amnesia may be a cliched plot device, we get both a reason (The Haitian, and if anyone yelled 'FUCKING AMNESIA' at the TV without thinking that Peter got it from The Haitian, you guys really need to pay attention to the blatent clues a bit more) and a key storytelling moment in which Peter becomes more like the Peter from 5YG. Same with Hiro, his journeys in Japan push him far towards who he is in 5YG, and he buries a regenerator alive no less. Parkman does too, forcing people to do things he wants them to do. I guess I'll be called defensive and a fanboy, but honestly I don't care. Heroes is still, for me, one of the best shows on TV... and yes, I like Lost and Heroes, but unlike the TB mentality I don't happen to prefer the former over the latter. Comparing them, to me, makes no sense because they aren't even remotely similar shows.
