Great... a PG-13 TERMINATOR movie. That's what we need...

Published at:  May 04, 2008 11:24:03 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm a little pissed off at this. So, we've wanted a future war movie for a long time. That movie in the TERMINATOR franchise is akin to us seeing the Alien homeworld in an ALIEN film. It's something we didn't think we'd ever see.

Word came out today that TERMINATOR: SALVATION is shooting for a PG-13 rating, producers citing DIE HARD 4. Sorry, I know DIE HARD 4 has its defenders. I think it's mediocre as an action movie, but it's fucking awful as a Die Hard movie. John McClane wasn't John McClane. He was a cartoon character.

This doesn't bode well for TERMINATOR. Why go PG-13 now? The series has grossed over a billion dollars as R-rated films. When Die Hard was PG-13ed it ceased feeling like a Die Hard movie. You can defend the film and that's fine, but I've not spoken to one person yet who has said it was a better film for being PG-13. They might have accepted it and moved on, enjoyed it for what it is, but no one can explain to me how it benefited the series being PG-13.

I feel the same way about TERMINATOR. Finally we see a future war movie where people are going to die off-screen, Terminators are going to look creepy and fire lasers that don't hit anything...

Variety cites the ability for merchandising with a PG-13 movie... Listen... aside from merchandising being a shitty way to think about what's best for this film, I was 10 when Terminator 2 came out. I saw it twice theatrically. There were toys and trading cards. I bought those, too. I dragged my parents and my friends to see it. I bought it on video when it came out (for the bargain basement price of $40, unheard of at the time for new release videos). They merchandised the fuck out of T2, so I don't buy that excuse.

I like the cast for the new movie and I don't hate McG behind the camera, but I really, really hate this decision. Bad call. Bad call. Bad call. Bad call. You know they're going to shoot a couple of scenes to put out an R-rated DVD that'll be as lame as the R-rated cut of DIE HARD 4 on DVD was.

I hope they come to their senses and not make a wussified sci-fi battle flick, one we've been waiting for for 24 years.

Seriously, i know it's sad but it's fact we're going to have to learn to accept- the days of R rated action movies are long dead. The 80's (and i guess, early 90's)are long gone. The real sad part is what we get left with... Ratner, Bay and 2 hour toy commercials. That's right, i'm bitter.

As cheesy as his acting is, I can't see a terminator without Arnold, who confirmed that he won't be returning for the fourth installment. As good as his acting is, I can't see Brolin as a terminator, who is evidently going to take on the role; and what happened to Claire Dane, I've heard she won't be making an appearance either... isn't she Connor's wife in the future? I'm pretty disappointed with the direction this is headed.

I disagree with you 85%. The last Die Hard movie was great. It was even better with the unrated DVD version. However, I do agree that a PG-13 Terminator movie is WRONG, and just plain stupid to think about. The future wars need to be extreamly violent and should depict that. It's the extermination of the human race for Christ's sake! We need to see the flesh getting shot and burned of the 101's as they fight. Come on Hollywood, don't blow this one.

This could have all ended with 3 if so many of you sad little bastards hadn't insisted that despite how unutterably lame it was, despite how pointless and silly it was, that it was somehow worth spending your hard-earned money on, and "wasn't that bad". The first time I saw a Terminator movie was when my grandparents took me to see Terminator 2. I was 9 at the time. Yes, 9. N-i-n-e. I've been dying for a future Terminator movie since that very day. Terminator 3 was complete shit, as is that pathetic excuse for a television show, The Sarah Conner Chronicles. This I held out hope for, though. The stars were aligned (get it?) and everything was sounding awesome... until right now. Fuck this. I'm sick of having shit-aweful Terminator shoved down my throat... especially after the two most recent travesties I mentioned a moment ago. I'm out. This is off my watch list, I officially no longer fucking care. I am done with Terminator. This is just too much. Without knowing the final story of this film, I don't know that it matters if this is R or PG-13. What the execs will never realize....

    by exie

...is that authenticity and good storytelling will make a movie a bigger hit. Not a watered down rating . Making this movie live up to it's 1st 2 predecessors in tone and quality is what will give them the atm machine they want. Cutting the balls off a violent property (hello, it's called The Terminator) is the kind of back handed corporate suck ass slap that doesn't play anymore. Film goers are staying away until the film to rally around shows up in theaters. Iron Man is one. Dark Knight will be the other. What's the difference between those movies and most bombs? They go for the jugular and they are not restricted by marketing reports. Learn your fucking lesson Hollywood and let the talent tell the story they want to tell regardless of the rating and watch the money roll in and the asses show up back in the theater. As long as you keep taking properties like Alien, Die Hard, etc. and making them kiddie friendly you will never reap the true monster hit you all are searching from. Yeah, they make money and you get to keep your jobs, but by being bold, you can make blockbusters.

    by half vader

It's not as 'hard' as even T1. I watched both the other night, and I think T2 would get a PG13 these days. That's just my subjective P.O.V., obviously.

And you saw it at the movies when you were 10? Slightly takes the wind out of your argument. You can't say it must be hard R and simultaneously say it was fine for a 10 year old.

BTW if anyone is paying attention to this I'm not necessarily advocating PG13 this time around. R seems like a given to me for a full-on war movie in a sci-fi setting to have any weight. I'm just playing Devil's advocate because Quint's argument isn't necessarily that clean and presenting a different view.

To be pointedly critical, I doubt either side of that personality disorder would be focused on making sure killer robots from the future got a PG-13 rating. It's just plain old marketing. But hey, you're only 25. So, the whole, "I'm done" speech will probably happen a few more times in your young life before you realize you're fooling yourself. Your anger might stem from the fact that your grandparents took you to the movie. If you had just snuck in like the rest of us, under a pseudo-fear of punishment from the parents that wanted more out of us than a desire to see murder and nudity on school day, maybe you wouldn't still be sucking on that ranty pacifier in your mid-twenties. This too, shall pass. So, buck up little camper! My point is that kids can and will see R-rated films, especially one in a popular franchise. It's not that I want T4 to have hardcore sex or Tom Savini like head explosions (okay, I want the last one), but I want it to fit in the universe set up by the previous films (and yes, I exclude T3... that's a joke). If it was just another lame sequel, whatever. But it's the movie that gives us the first full on future war. If there was any story in this universe that deserves not to be kiddie friendly it's the future war movie. And me seeing it at 10 doesn't deflate my argument. I was watching R-rated movies at age 7 (earlier without parental consent). My argument is that kids that are into these movies will see them. Probably like me, with family. Or the cool parents or older brothers of their friends.Could there be a successful PG-13 Terminator movie? Sure, but is it more or less likely that it'll fit in the world we know? That's my point.

    by rsdigi

I don't care if the MPAA gave it an R, it was PG13. Wow she the Terminatrix punched through a guys head so they give it an R. That's the only reason. Get use to it, movie studios dont care if they are loyal to the fans. They know if they release a PG 13 movie they can not only make more money in theaters, but can release the Unrated DVD which should have been the theater version. Take Die Hard 4, christ the unrated DVD had a little too many "fucks" for my taste.

    by iamjack'suserid

John McClane ceased to be a charismatic and flawed anti-hero who was thrown into problems and became in Die Hard 4 a generic action hero who resembled John McClane in appearance only. John McClane didn't ask for the shit that was thrown at him, but in DH4 he seemed to rush headlong into it. And a PG13 Terminator movie is like sex without dicks and vaginas and boobs; it just aint the same thing. T3 was shit and anyone who liked that, I simply laugh at them.

    False Economy?

    by cpt kirks 2pay

OK, here's a question debate for you guys, and maybe we all need to do our homework and get some research from the BO/studio reports what not. - Do you think that making a franchise, as well as a film a PG13 rating down from a 'R' makes more money for the studio? As it is only money that makes the studio make any action? If we find that it DOESN'T make more money for a studio, hyapthetically or for real, then there may be a case for stopping this 'sell out' trend - as far as the studio is concerned that is, not our own 'good taste' as we like to call it. So let's think - PG13 brings in a larger age demographic in allowing more of the younger audience seeing it (all of them that is, not just 'some' who saw it in their own dodgy uique ways) and it therefore allows greater merchandise - BUT does it weaken and water down the movies so much that it can crush the franchise or lower the BO takings as time progresses? Does it also EXCLUDE a lot of the otherwise older audiences who might be put off by the softer approach and make this demographic shrink for a single film as well the sequels as the franchise tries to continue. All the Box Office pluses and minuses taken into account for being a lower rating, DOES it actually make a movie/franchise make more money?

There is NO logic to this....

    by jobacca

Obviously they want to market this to kids and teenagers. Then when they do,people will complain about them marketing a PG13 film to kids just like they complained about Iron Man toys at Burger King.Aliens,Predator,Terminator,Die Hard...all these fims were hits and made millions as R-Rated franchises. So why does the studio think that watering them down and ruining what made them great will make more money? Because all their market research shows that PG13 is what sells...so by god they're going to make a PG13 movie come hell or high water. After all,Iron Man made a ton of money and its PG13 so Terminator should be PG13 too...cause thats the only reason Iron Man made money. Nevermind the fact that it had a great cast and a great director and a great script...those things dont REALLY matter.

They've already neutered the Alien, Predator, and John McClane. Do you think that's honestly gonna change now? No amount of internet outcry will change the fact that Fox doesn't give a flying fuck about the fans. It's all about making the biggest opening weekend possible...and nothing else. That studio is notorious for having some of the stupidest execs in town. That's why they've destroyed each and every franchise they've ever built.

    www.boxofficemojo.com
Die Hard 4 made a bit more money than the other three before it - domestically - and slightly less internationally than DHwaV. So it is simple to calculate and they will probably want to lure the audiences away from Night at the Museum 2.
But rest assured, there is always the extended "Come with me if you want to have an R" dvd edition to milk the franchise just a bit more.

    by tallboy66

Aside from a few f-bombs and the odd gore shot (guy getting it in the eye in T2), I don't think the series was ever about real bloody kills. Sure, the Terminator shot up a cop shop in the first movie, but it wasn't that bloody. I think freaking out over a PG-13 Alien vs. Predator movie IS called for because those movies have alot of gore. Yeah I'm with you on the BO takings of DH4 against the other movies. But inflation or not inflation, how much difference did the new PG13 rating make to this increased BO taking? Do you think this movie would have made virtually the same amount of money even if it was a 15 rating (in the UK) or an 18? At least keep it 15 like 2 and 3 I believe were. Anyway, if the PG13 rating isn't an issue in what made this movie make so much money, we still have the argument to consider in regard to the DVD uncut version making more money or not, too. Someone get me a BO/Studio analasyst. Or someone get me Ellen Page to save us all.

You made some great points there and I won't argue with them. But they do make me think of the new Terminator 'War' movies though. Think how effective it would be to see all that gore and graphic horror in these films. (People screaming as their being burnt alive, skulls being crushed by Terminator robotic hands, etc. But that's just the graphic factor alone.) For it's not just a sci-fi dark futuristic war movie. To be really 'powerful' you need to make it partially at least, a 'horror' film too. Not just in graphic visuals, but also to let the higher rating lend a greater feeling of darkness, dread, let's face it, all the things that make an 'Apocalypse'. Now picture all this in your mind, how an R Apocalyptic Hell on Earth Terminator movie will be like. Then think of how large the adult audience would be. Then think of how much this audience could be lost if it was watered down for a PG13 film. I know some older people who wouldn't give a fuck about it so much and wouldn't see it. Take away the 'real' horror of war, something that gives it relevance to the wars we're fighting in our real world TODAY, and the Terminator movies become so much more superficial that some of this 'mature' people would think 'nah, couldn't give a fuck about some silly sci-fi movie that's too much for the kids'. Come on, follow me here. Saving Private Ryan. HUGE Box Office movie. Think of the difference that film would have if it was PG13 - then think how it's BO takings would be? You guys think it would be higher - or lower? Does this help our discussion?

Or also, are we as likely to see the remaming sequels if this PG13 'dilution' to the film's 'power' happens? I mean, if the films do become so lame due to the lower rating, some of us might just give up on them. Again, it's all about the plusses and minuses in audience attendances with this lower 'compromised' rating.

They are mismanaging these films and losing a lot of money. How many fucking times do they have to tank a franchise before they put 2 and 2 together, and realize all their biggest money makers were chockful of violence and dark as hell. Even '89 Batman, though PG-13, was nowhere near what these cocksuckers would come up with in committee nowadays. Kids aren't stupid, but they are impressionable and imitate the older kids and these cookie cutter products you are churning out are failures. If you are worried about an uproar from christian parents who won't be letting their kids see that kind of garbage then you are making a huge mistake - thats part of the hype! Thats like saying no kids play Grand Theft Auto cause its rated M. Not only has every kid 9 and older with a slight interest in videogames already played it, the kids with bible thumpin parents did so while smoking weed and worshipping satan. And the few PG-13 apologists in this talkback have no balls or common sense.

    LOTR and PG-13

    by veebeeyes

I'm actually more concerned about some movies being watered down as far as language, rather than violence.

I mean, Aliens wasn't that gory, but a lot of people were saying "shit" and "fuck". I think that LOTR was occasionally comparably as violent as Aliens or The Terminator, but it would be sort of ridiculous if Frodo were to say "fuck this shit, I'm going home." I think that's why PG-13 works better for something like LOTR than for something like a Terminator movie.

    A few questions

    by bobpalpatine

Would T-1000 have been as menacing if he hadn't impaled countless people?
Where Sarah Connor have been as nutty as squirrel shit if she hadn't stabbed that doctor with a pen while slobbering out 'fucks' every 2 seconds
Would the Terminator ripping the skin from his arm been as effective if he hadn't done it?
The problem with PG-13, is these movies never feel like there's any real intimate stakes. In fact, I feel pretty relieved when I watch a PG-13 movie, you relax a little more" good, the hero won't get in any SERIOUS trouble". Dieing isn't as scary as seeing HOW people die - the R rated down and dirty. Why am I even belaboring this point. PG-13 flicks are good for passing the time, being entertained, being psychologically suspended. R rated flicks are for the gruesome primitive nature that resides in all of us, and it's getting tapped less and less nowadays.

I love how the movie itself has become an afterthought

    by bitterman23

It began when they announced the release dates before the movie began shooting, and now they announce the rating as well. What happened to the good old days of simply making a fucking movie however you wanted and then submitting it to the MPAA to see what its rating was? Maybe T3 could have gotten a PG-13, but they weren't thinking about it when making the film (which I think is fairly decent considering the lack of Cameron), which is the key difference. And Willis can claim all he wants that DH4's action doesn't feel like PG-13, but it's fucking bullshit. Watch the movie again - McClane only actually kills like 2-3 guys himself. Most of them die by his making other stuff hit them (fire extinquisher, fire hydrant, car, etc), which is a handy little work around.

Is that Sex and Violence does sell (in some form to every demographic), when other media outlets whip up an uproar about the proliferation of filth to sell their shtick on the back of the fearmongering to the elders you don't pull the plug on the tits and blood, you make stuff to sell to everyone and play them off each other, everyone goes home their version of happy. I wonder.....

    by the dum guy

Why does it matter to care anymore? Kids today can see whatever fucked up shit they want on the intertubes (suicides, porn, porn-suicides) and yet they get gruff for trying to buy a ticket to go see Harold and Kumar part deux. But, change twenty minutes of the movies and suddenly it is a PG-13 comedy, and you get all the tickets to sell, without much of a reason to see it (I'm not saying it's good cinema but it is a good analogy to what the difference b/t R and 13 is) but suddenly the actual reason to see it is lost. Studios are doing this because people are dumb and/or indifferent, most people see 5-9 movies in a theater a year, so the only good R movies we get are low budget comedies/dramas/action (see: Rambo). The only hundred million dollar budgets getting passed (per usual) are aimed right at PG-13.But beside the rant, I really wonder if it matters as to content (ratings wise)? I was at a pre-funeral gathering the other nite and the subject of '2 girls 1 cup' came up and a few people asked if I'd seen it? I replied, only when I eat slightly melted chocolate ice cream.

To be quite honest, factual number aside, I think studios are getting more and more nervous about the massive costs of these movies. Ergo, they will have to be advertised all day for all audiences to see. They just want the biggest market out there possible and given what an average teen spends on the movies (a lot), they are taking the gamble of pissing of a few geeks against making 20 or 30 million $ more over its initial run. In these things, there is no artistic integrity whatsoever, just cold calculations. But I don't know how much more money (or less for that matter) will make. Bale is a good thing, but the rumoured lack of Ahnuld is another factor. Come on, he IS the terminator and a lot of people will think of this of what American Pie Band Camp was to the American Pie franchise (yeah, I did just compare the Terminator series with a pie humping series) - a cheap cash-in without any of the original stars. Save Eugene Levy as a cold blooded killer robot. Now there is an idea...

Have they lost their FUCKING MINDS?!

    by movie maniac

First, let me complain, then reason: Fuck this. A PG-13 movie? Fuck McG, fuck the studio system where everything is about merchandising, fuck this PG-13 shit. What in the hell are we coming to? Now the more reasoned thinking: Film-making is a fucking art. I know that sounds cheesy, but having businessmen in charge of movies is like have butchers in charge telling painters what to paint in order to make their work more marketable. It makes no fucking sense. If you strip an artist of their originality in order to make something more appealing, it just becomes more like the other shit that is out there that isn't appealing at all. And these fucks wonder why movie ticket sales continue to go down every year. Gee, I wonder why. It is all relative fellas. You try to perfect target marketing and you lose more of your market. "The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers". Christian Bale is in my top 3 favorite actors. If he doesn't have the power now, he will after The Dark Knight opens huge. For the first time he will have the power to put his foot down and tell the studio that Terminator needs to be an R franchise, or he's out. It's what separates people like him from just a movie star...he's an artist. When freedom of creativity is given to the filmmakers and allow them to realize their visions, you get franchises like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings and Terminator. When you don't, you get shit like The Fantastic Four. Businessmen and Filmmakers can work together fantastically, and they should, but there is a reason the businessmen are not directors. They have no artistic vision. They forget why people want to go to the movies in the first place. People want to see something new. Terminator 4 has (or should I say had) this potential, but now they are squandering it. Films should be a union of business and artistry, but this is making it all business. I understand that the execs want to make their money back. That's understandable. I'm not wanting to completely ridicule you. We just want you to open up your wallets and lead the path into the next golden age of cinema. What did the child in each of us want to see when we were growing up? We wanted to see a different kind of story. The more they take a different story away, the less we care to see it. It is only a matter of time before the movie-going-public begins to see things the way that we as movie buffs do. There is no perfect system in art. Otherwise we would have a million Mona Lisas. I hope the powerful artists in the industry stand up together and fight this onslaught, respectfully. Not specifically for Terminator 4, but for film in general. They make billions of dollars collectively and all we are asking of them now is they fight for artistic freedom for artists to come, who aren't big yet. It's why we are all on here. We love movies. Please speak up for those of us who don't have a voice in the industry, but a passion for your work. I guess I just hope that the execs find the child within themselves who wanted to see the original works that are truly remembered. Would they rather be proud of the box office sales, or of the product. I hope this isn't falling on deaf ears. What do you guys think?

I'd hate to judge this film solely on this decision before it's even gone into production but it definitely stings, especially when you take the first two movies into consideration and how successful they were with their "R" ratings. Even the third movie, which many consider inferior, had a bit of an edge to it. Quint is absolutely on point when he discusses the last DIE HARD movie. I personally enjoyed that film but felt that it was a decent movie in spite of it's rating, not because of it.

Just in the past couple of years they released action figures based on properties like 300, Sin City, V for Vendetta, Saw, Shaun Of The Dead, Halloween, Grindhouse, Texas Chansaw Massacre, Silence Of The Lambs, Reservoir Dogs and so on. This movie is gonna suck ass regardless. Forget the presence of Christian Bale, great actor but since when was that enough to guarantee quality in terms of the movie itself? If you even slightly rate McG as a credible movie director then you need to take a minute a think, because you're a fucking idiot. Plus the franchise as a whole has long-since sold out anyway - I realise the series is entertaining but can't compare to the first two films, but T3 epitomises this, why make it without a good director or script? Money money money. The argument above for not making it a PG-13 is feeble incidentally - so some lonely little gimp with no friends or girlfriend managed to get into the theatre underage and buy some merchandise? Well I'm convinced, we can definitely generalise that to all under 13s in the U.S.

If you think Christian Bale alone can save a PG-13, McG (a horrible director, yes even for the kind of films he makes) directed, John Connor played by a sickly child who looks and acts NOTHING like Michael Biehn Terminator film then you are as fanboyishly naive as you are stupid. Let's all put our money where are mouths are right this second and boycott it outright. You don't NEED to see a film you know for a fact will be horrible in theaters, just let it pass you by and you'll feel better for it. If we want to start forcing change then let's do it. John McClane aint 100% John McClane without humdreds of ''fuck you's'' and a Yippee-Kay-Yay MotherFucker! and Terminator aint terminator without flesh ripping gore and shit so this will likely be a watchable A-Team type deal that might be slighltly better when the directors cut comes out! Wasn't T3 Pg 13?

    by jack_bauer

It was a "12" in the uk as far as I can recall. Not that it was a great film or anything, but it was nowhere near an R in the same way the first two were.

  • May 05, 2008 5:42:43 AM CDT

Yep, T3 was 12A in the UK

    by palimpsest

That's passed uncut (I checked) at 12A, which is near identical in ratings terms to PG-13. That being said, T2 was 15 on original release (though the movie was cut by the distributor to avoid the 18 rating). So in the UK, we've had a history of toned down Terminator. This latest news is just par for the course for a franchise that's happy to sacrifice fans for the wider paying public...

    by dc films

I regret paying to see DH4.0. I own all the other DH dvds in many incarnations - love them. But i won't buy DH4.0 in any incarnation - ruined the whole franchise - even put me off the original. A PG13 Terminator will do the same for that franchise - kills it for me - i'm not gonna bother getting the blu-rays of the originals now, cos i know that even seeing the trailers on TV for this PG shit is gonna put me right off the originals. Another great franchise bites the dust due to short sighted, incompetent corporate greed. They think they're getting kids in, but i was a kid when i saw the originals and it made me a fan ('til now). Like all kids i could smell a watered down turd a mile off and that put off the kids worse than it did the adults - it's the Hard-R that they love - not because it's gratuitous, but because it's for adults, uncut, uncensored, non-patronizing. They've taken the wrong lesson from DH4.0 here. Bad bad bad decision.

    by teh awesome

Nor does it make it suck. I would much rather see a well directed, well acted, well shot movie than simply a movie with an R rating. What will being PG-13 prevent the new terminator movie from being great?

So they can't drop 35 F bombs, they can't bang Hookers, big deal. Stop crying, this could still be an excellent movie. I really hope noone uses the PG-13 as an excuse to shut your ears and close your eyes to a potentially good movie.

And Harry, you know as well as I do that an R won't make it good. Not everyone has to have T&A in EVERY movie they see.

    by rbatty024

Granted, it signals that the film might be made by committee, but the rating itself isn't that big of a deal. I think you could take out the blood and guts of T2 and it still would have been just as good (you need the violence for the first film). Violence in Die Hard, however, was integral to the film. It's called Die Hard for chrissakes!

you have a point. Today, Terminator 2 might escape with a PG13 rating (if you removed the Todd-milk carton death scene). Or T3. Wouldn't take much to make that a PG13, because it wasn't especially violent. Most deaths were implied. You didn't actually see "Jose Berrera" get his brains blown out, or Kate's fiance getting sawed to pieces. I stopped watching the Sarah TV show after a couple weeks, so I don't know what's going on there. I exaggerate a bit of course when I suggest that a concept that is "R" could not thrive in "PG13" land, but it does sort of create parameters for violence / language that makes fans wary.

Lots of stuff getting shot at. That would be so...freaking....bad. No this is awful though. Yeah the Die Hard thing is funny because the action was decent. But no R-rating really made a huge difference. Even when people said it was pushing PG-13 hard. Hilarious. This won't be doing much either. Except throwing another franchise away in the hopes of getting a little more money. Is Terminator relevant to the PG-13 crowd? Honestly, come on. Maybe barely, and even less for Die Hard. If R-rated comedies can do well, then certainly R-rated Terminator movies will to...

Whilst TSCC had a sly sense of humour in places it just remains in the shadow of the original two. As many have remarked, and like the Clone Wars before it, the Future War between man and machine should have remained a chilling story told to set the stakes for the original film.

My God is this a bad decision. Like, Biblically bad. Merchandising for a PG-13, soccer mom-approved "Terminator" movie has become more important than the actual movie? My God...
I've been a defender of McG directing this film (or trilogy of films), and have taken a lot of shit for my position. But the studio making a "Terminator" film without blood, sex, horror, soldiers being blown apart in battle, or characters saying the word "fuck" for the sake of pulling in under-15-year-olds is a decision I will never, ever support. Studio suits can justify this decision however they feel like justifying it. But they're cocksuckers, and I wonder if they're even human if they PG-13ify such a classically R-rated franchise like "Terminator."
I withdraw my support for this film, McG, and anything to do with Terminator 4 unless I see a big fat R rating on it.

Didn't keep me out when I was a kid and I still don't see the AMC Theater polizai carding the populace going into the megaplex. Its called pandering to the MPAA and Joe mid-west bible thumper. Balls in the bowl all around. All in all it doesn't really matter because the MPAA's world isn't the real world, but no one really goes out to see the real world to make a proper assessment. Personally, I saw so many R flicks as a kid I was totally desensitized to all of it. The big deal is that the big boys don't give movie goers credit for knowing reality from fantasy anymore. And, if the youngins are the issue is there really any difference when a 11 year old goes alone vs his dad or mom taking him and 3 of his friends? Is mom really going to have a discussion about the film's violence in the mini van on the way home to play Call of Duty 4 on the xBox?

Both of your arguments are spurious at best, and studio ass-kissing at worst. Neither of you give a shit what the film is rated, obviously, but in my opinion your reasons for believing what you believe are small-minded and kind of juvenile.
ZO: you better care what it's rated. PG-13 is strictly no excessive blood or violence, nudity, or the word "fuck." So your argument that ratings mean nothing nowadays is bogus. They mean everything, whether you want to believe it or not.
Alienindisguise: so you're happy if a bunch of terminators get blown up but no humans get their arms pulled off, scream in agony, say "fuck," or watch their friends suffer in R-rated ways, thus heightening the unpredictability of the drama? You're honestly ok with that?

shooting for PG13 means the studio never had much faith in the project anyways. The producers spent years dicking around trying to find someway of revitalizing the franchise and they fuck it up anyways. I'll wait till the trailer to decide on whether I pay for this or netflix it.

    by torres09

LOL. This movie is going to suck so badly and unfortunately it's probably going to make a killing at the box-office. To be honest I lost all faith in the film when McG was announced as the director. The man hasn't even made a half decent action movie, so God knows what the suits were thinking employing that talentless hack to direct such a prestigious franchise? Adding to the fact that this is supposed to be a post-apocalyptic war against the machines much like Kyle Reese's flashbacks from the original Terminator, how can it not be anything but a hard R rating movie? Well at least there's DVDs of older movies since Hollywood can't or won't make real full-blooded quality action movies.

At least there's no Schwarzenegger in the movie. As much as he made the franchise his role should be limited to a cameo of him going back through time and the end of the franchise.

Don't Only Blame DH4; Blame the Fox TV Series!

    by joey_redballs

Yes. Die Hard 4 was bland, baby food when we all wanted to eat greasy pizza with all the toppings. But let's all think about the guilty pleasure that was the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Did we watch it? I did. Apparently, a lot of other people watched it too. Before it came on, I was screaming & crying "DOGSHIT!" for months. Then I watched it. Why? Because it was great?...NO! The series is an okay, imperfect distraction. The secret of the show's success?....THERE WERE NO NEW SHOWS ON TV! Not since "What's Happening" had Re-run been a household name. It was either watch American Gladiators or Sarah Connor Chronicles. After watching a half hour of American Gladiators, my morbid curiosity was satisfied, and I was ready to move on. I'm actually somewhat surprised the show is being resurrected again for Summer reality filler. Now American Gladiators is one of those shows like "Last Comic Standing" that only comes on when it's 90+ degrees outside. Back to the graveyard with that already! Anyhow, my point is that they can get away with PG-13ish violence on a mediocre Terminator TV series during a writer's strike. When the bar is American Gladiators, the bar is pretty low. A PG-13 Terminator movie in theaters?...let's hope all the 13-16 year olds out there have better taste because that's who they're targeting with this movie. I'll tell you what I imagine The Suits are thinking, "Well, this generation has grown up watching edited-for-television versions of all 3 Terminator movies, and the Sarah Connor Chronicles...we can make more money if these kids can buy tickets to Terminator 4!" Times have changed, and probably all movie theaters card kids. And how many teenagers want to go to the R-rated movie with their parents? Shit, I'm 29 and still get carded by my movie theater. WTF? I remember when it all started in our town. My best friend and I got dropped off to see "Falling Down". They told us we had to be 17 or have an adult with us. They tried to comfort us by offering that they had two shitty movies playing that weren't rated R. We walked out and went next door to use the pay phone to call my Dad to come back and pick us up; then we played a dilapidated KUNG FU arcade game until he got there. Yup, we used pay phones and played arcade games back then. Times were different. Not too much time later, I remember having to get my Dad to buy our tickets to Predator 2, then he sat in the back of the theater while we moved to the front row so we didn't have to feel UNcool. You know who the cool one was? My Dad was the cool one for taking the time to cart our asses around to see R-rated action movies. I want every 13-16 year old on this message board to demand an R-rated Terminator movie, then bite the bullet and have your parents (or older sibling or whatever) buy your tickets (keyword "buy", you and your friends can "pay" for it by handing them the money beforehand). When I was 13 I didn't settle for seeing PG or PG-13 shit when confronted with a forced choice, I walked the fuck out! IF YOU STOP PAYING TO SEE PG-13 GARBAGE...THEY'LL STOP MAKING IT! Only you can prevent forest fires!...oh wait, they don't make PSAs anymore...only us old folks will get that. Anyhow, this is how I spent my morning called-off sick from a job I hate. And kids...that's a future far scarier than any PG-13 Terminator movie.

I find this a little funny...

    by bizarrojerry

Now, the real reason this phenomenon began was that someone decided a few years back that it was time to enforce the R ratings, right? Thus, cutting out the under 18 crowd that was always a big part of their audience. I dunno, I just find it funny, simply because it's like the movie industry admitting after many years that they really did market R rated movies to people that were supposedly not allowed to see them.Quint, I'm a little perturbed to see you refer to the "cool parents" who let other people's kids see R rated movies. I hope that's you just saying kids think they're cool. Cuz, if you think that, you may want to consider becoming an adult at some point.

The point here is not that every movie should be R. It's that Terminator has been an R-rated franchise so far, and making it PG-13 hints at a watering down of the flick, and likely only to sell more tickets.

The only way the studios will get it

    by hawaiian organ donor

Is if people stop going to this crap. I think Fox actually listened to all the fanboy ranting after AvP was released as PG-13 trash and even though it did well during it's box office run, it probably died quickly on DVD because their core audience didn't want anything to do with it. So what do they do? They decide to release AvP2 as an R-rated splatterfest with the hope that it'll appease the fanboys. Unfortunately they forgot to use a good script or decent actors so the R rating couldn't save that monumental pile of dogshit. As a result the movie tanked and being studio brainiacs, they equate the R-rating with limited audience and will go right back to shoving out watered down garbage. Warners is doing the same thing with T3 after seeing what happened with the first AvP and DH4. They figure PG-13 plus bonzo box office equals a movie that people will give a crap about in 10 years. If it's anything the Fantastic Four movies have taught me, it's that studios have stopped caring about actually making good movies, films like Dr. Strangelove that will still be on an AFI list a century from now. It's all about the quick returns. The way to stop this is by not paying to see it. Let the "Yo, yo, yo" teenagers who have an attention span shorter than the frickin' pants they wear down around their knees and the Botoxed soccer moms with cheeks stretched tighter than a frog's anus throw their money down on this and give it a stellar opening weekend, but the total lack of fan support will sink this faster than Nader's presidential bid.

    Cool vs UNcool Parents

    by joey_redballs

If it's an R rated action movie that your 13+ year old son has seen the likes of on home video, and you talked it over with his friends' parents...taking your son and his friends to see the R rated action movie isn't all that bad. Just know what kind of movie you're taking them to first. There are many websites dedicated to detailing the reasons why a movie has its rating. But if your kid is 8 years old, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay might not be the best choice. Hell, I'm 29 years old now, have just said No to drugs my entire life, and I had the passing thought to get high after watching Harold & Kumar. How do you think that little boy sitting 2 rows in front of me felt after the movie? At first I thought his older sister and her boyfriend took him to the movie. But afterward, I decided it must have been his 20-22 year old parents. The mom looked like barely-drinking-age, I-love-cigarettes, stripper-pole, trash. The dad looked like a skinny, tattoo-sleaved, bathtub-meth-making, prison bitch. Here's another TRUE STORY...I was watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and a baby started crying. I said the following out loud so the parents could hear it, "Are you kidding me?! Is that a baby crying in here? The screaming alone in this movie will give that child nightmares for the rest of its life." About 10 minutes later, because the baby would not stop crying, a group of maybe 5 or 6 adults left with the baby. Apparently, their whole "crew" decided they would leave since baby's mamma had to take the infant home. LESSON: Bad Parents make Worse Kids who make Even Worse Parents who make Even Worse Kids. Shit. They need to bring back PSAs, after-school specials, and very special episodes of Family Ties just to teach kids some common sense these days.

They needed a director they could control. This is NOT his movie, it's the movie studio's movie and they are milking the cow for all it's worth. This movie would have made 500MM world wide EASILY being rated R. Do they really need to sacrifice the integrity of the franchise to squeeze another 100MM out of a PG-13 rating? Some of us hoping for something better than T3 may not even go see it now...

Fun Fact As To Why DH4 Sucked So Many Nuts!

    by joey_redballs

It wasn't just the PG-13 rating. It was the writing, acting, and directing. I totally didn't care about the characters, and an action movie is only as good as its villain(s). I would have been happier with the PC guy instead of the Mac guy, playing the role of hacker. Okay, here's your FUN FACT: Why didn't John McTiernan direct Die Hard 4? McTiernan is the guy who directed the original Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance that you liked so damn much. ANSWER: Because the studio didn't know if McTiernan would be called into court or jail during the filming. The story itself sounds like a movie and will no doubt someday be made into one...probably a made for TV drama. The feds busted this guy, Anthony Pellicano, known as Private Eye to the stars. Anthony Pellicano had equipment for illegal phone wire taps and homemade explosives in his house. John McTiernan was one of many Hollywood folk who paid this private investigator to do illegal phone taps on their spouse, probably to gain knowledge for an easier divorce case. Unlike people like Tom Cruise, who had his lawyer be the complete point-of-contact with the private eye, John McTiernan hired the private eye himself. Here's the abridged version from wikipedia: "On April 3, 2006, McTiernan was charged in federal court with lying to the FBI during an interview in the wiretapping investigation involving Anthony Pellicano. He was arraigned and pleaded guilty on April 17, 2006, and is the 14th person charged in this case. Some time later, upon retaining new counsel, McTiernan attempted to withdraw his guilty plea. On September 24, 2007, this bid was denied by Federal District Judge Dale S. Fischer. She then proceeded to sentence McTiernan to four months in prison for lying about his relationship with Pellicano. He was ordered to surrender for incarceration by January 15, 2008. His lawyers stated thereafter he planned to appeal this conviction."

I was 14 or so at the time, and it had enough "R" material in it to feel "R" to me. Some violence, ripping hearts out of chests, eye surgery, a bunch of F-bombs, some sara connor nipplage, etc.

    by laserpants

It was shit when it came out in the early 90s and its still shit now. I think the people who liked it probably haven't seen very many films prior to 1990 and, ergo, have nothing too judge it on.
Btw, how come the T-1000 tortures Sarah Connor and tries to force her to call for her son WHEN HE CAN ALREADY MIMIC HER VOICE AND BODY?! Something he does like 2 minutes later? D-U-M-B.
I'm sorry, I guess being born in the 70s makes me, I dunno, be able to judge quality from shit.

Where society has to become politically and socially correct so as to raise society's children. Because parents are no longer capable of telling their kids "no". So the rest of the world must adapt to ensure we keep questionable content from young minds because parents have either A. Been forced to not parent their children or B. Are completely unwilling to Parent their children. So society must do it.

    by dc films

An R rating doesn't make a shit script into a good movie, but a PG13 rating does make a good script into a shit movie.

If they say that a PG13 rating doesn't require this Terminator script to change, then it's not a Terminator script.

My commiseration to Mr Bale, an excellent actor and hard worker who seems to have been screwed over.

    by freakemovie

First of all, the MPAA, flawed as it is, completely prevents local ratings and censorship boards, so all this bitching about being a slave to the MPAA, or some of the more elaborate rants about the politically correct forces of society blah blah blah, is massive overkill. Second, they're positioning this as a giant summer movie so yes they're going to make it freaking PG-13 wake the fuck up: the reason they make summer movies is to make money. Not all parents are "cool" enough to let their kids into R-rated movies (and go to an R-rated movie in any major city and see just how "cool" some of those parents are). Third, DOES NO ONE CARE ABOUT THE DAMN SCRIPT ANYMORE? You're geeks, you're supposed to be smarter than people who bitch about movies for not having enough blood/"fucks". If they spend enough time making sure it's a good fucking story then I'm there.

I was not tired at all when I went it. There wasn't a sudden jump in the heat. Nobody laced the popcorn (as far as I know). Die Hard 4 was so boring that when I woke up toward the end, I didn't miss a god damn thing. To make an analogy, there is good music that goes in the charts, then elevator music; there is movies that can be call "motion pictures" (good or bad), then there's elevator movies.

Terminators are so cute! They are just so gentle and sweet that I just want to cuddle up with one at night. A terminator that could help with chores around the house, run errands and do my accounting would be great. Oh wait, I forgot that terminators are machines engineered with the sole purpose of killing people. Why a studio would want to produce a movie for children about machines that look like people and then kill them is just so responsible and says so much about why America is such a beautiful mess.

    a sense of perspective

    by mrbong

it's rather disappointing to see this Quint chap engage in troll like behaviour, getting everyone at it like this. how about we all at least see a trailer, or perhaps even some stills from the set before we all get worked up on this one, hey? in my mind, it was only T1 that warranted an R certificate then and now. as for T2, it's PC friendly morality ("i svear i vill not kill anybudy") meant that it should have been a PG13 then and very much one now. T3 was equally tame. all 3 proved to be good films. and DH4 indeed WAS a good film, unless someone can explain how exactly a few utterances of cunt, fuck or the like, along with extra lingering shots of bullet wounds, would somehow have enhanced the experience? if any of you are actually idiotic enough not to watch a film purely on the basis of the certificate granted, well, more fool you - it's only you that will miss out on a potential slice of fine entertainment, or, in a worst case, be proved right.

    by darth macchio

In a pg-13 movie compared to an R movie? Is how men describe having sex. Hate us or not ladies...we usually say something along the lines of "bang" or "getme somodat", etc. Whatever. Nobody says "Sleep with her". I see these movies of guys talking and they're like "Yeah but did you sleep with her?" and I'm like...what the fuck...is it 1974? The correct phrasing is "Did you bang her?" or far more common "Did you fuck her?". Now this isn't anti-woman bait or any of that shit and the discussion for misogynist dialogue in movies is for another TB but hearing people speak like that just annoys the shit out of me and reminds me that I'm watching a movie where people cannot say the word fuck more than one time. Terminator 4 will not suck cause they can't say "Fuck" nor will it suck for lack of boobs (tho they never ever hurt of course). No...T4 will suck because it's born to suck. But being all puritanical is sooooo fucking old....can't we just get over it already? Does anyone's head really explode if someone says 'fuck' on tv? Are your mutant kids ruined for life if a titty is on screen? Like Louis CK says....gay guys can't get married cause you don't know how to explain it to your kid? Here's this to start...tell him to have a god damned lollipop, mind his/her own business, watch the movie, and shut the fuck up!!!

    PG-13 Vs. R

    by hawaiian organ donor

I agree that an R-rating isn't going to add a shine of polish to something that's already a turd, but if you have a good script that was meant to be R rated and pervert it enough that it becomes PG-13, then chances are it becomes unwatchable. And sometimes the source material was meant to be shot one way and one way only. Terminator films are violent by nature. Terminator films set in wartime would be twice as much.Filmmakers should respect the source material and allow it to be everything it's meant to be. A movie set against a violent backdrop requires violent images. Hence, the D-Day landing in "Saving Private Ryan" is the greatest 20-minutes ever put to film, while the bloodless D-Day landing in "The Longest Day" deserves to be dragged through a Mexican sewer and then loaded into a rocket and launched into the sun.

If The Dark Knight makes a shitload opening weekend. You will get a PG-13 Terminator film because it has Christian Bale and is PG13. Lets forget the fact that 300 was virtually unknown to common movie goers and made alot of money opening weekend. Who in the world doesnt know what or who The Terminator is? Based on appeal alone and making it a future war you will get many people watching it. But whatever by next year most movies will end up on Hulu.com so what does it matter. Ratings will be irrelevant once everything goes like Youtube. Embeded movies. Confirm Birth Date and move on. Whatever.

I thought Starship nailed the book in terms of presenting the fascistic intent. Even in the book there is no neon sign saying - This is fascism. Because the book was written for a young adult audience.
However, the great appeal of the book, is that Heinlein did not exclude adult elements, and those sophisticated enough, could pick up on it. I enjoyed the movie for some of the same reasons, and I think it gets short changed. It is a lot of fun.

Ultimately it's all about the writing.

    by thedarklinglord

Yeah, I think the desire for a PG-13 rating pretty much fucks this movie, especially with a tool like McG behind the camera who, like Wiseman for Die Hard, will shoot with that PG-13 in mind. That's what fairly well kills any hope I had for this ongoing franchise. If the studio was willing to wait to see the finish product and then decide whether or not to trim or edit for the purposes of a rating, or if they had a ballsy visionary for director who was going to shoot the movie however the fuck HE wanted, without thinking of the rating, then at least there would be hope of a proper R-rated version for DVD. And not a shitty "unedited" version that was still shot with a PG-13 rating in mind.

Ultimately, though, it's all about the writing. An R-rating, or even an R-rating mindset, doesn't assure a quality movie. Let's face it, most writers and directors squander those opportunities. Instead of thinking, "This is going to be R-rated, so I can bring a sense of honesty and realism to the actions," they tend to go with the approach of a giggling Beavis and Butthead, thinking, "Heh. Heh. Cool. I can have people swear for no reason at all. Heh. Heh. Heh. Yeah, yeah, and we can include titties! Heh. Heh. Yeah, titties rock!" So, instead of a gritty, unflinchingly brutal war movie, we'd end up with a bunch of naked Terminatrix types firing huge weapons with enough recoil to make their tits jiggle all over the place while the human resistance are spouting trite dialogue like, "Holy fucking shit, man! Did you fuckin' see that shit? What the FUCK was that? Oh, fuck me!"

Ideally, the restriction of a lesser rating should push the writer(s) to develop a script that's as tight as possible and pushes the limits of the rating. Unfortunately, there just aren't many writers that talented working in Hollywood, least of all on this project. So, yeah, if they're serious about the PG-13 rating, they've just fucked themselves.

Are the douchebags responsible for this bullshit. They are producing this fucking garbage. Here's a quote from an article at Coming Soon:

The "Terminator" series is one of the highest-grossing R-rated franchises of all time, with the first three films having grossed more than $1.03 billion worldwide. "The ratings have changed," said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek, a broker-turned-writer-producer. "The PG-13 has increased in intensity."

This guys needs to smack himself.

    Aaand, even better bullshit:

"Our merchandising program will be the largest to date for 'The Terminator,' " said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Derek Anderson, ex-owner of ad agency In the Mix, who adds that he had not discussed the possibility of an R-rating with Warners. "We won't force it. We are carrying on in the tradition of the mythology, with an exciting approach to the action. If we can make a compelling film to reach the widest audience, why wouldn't we do it?"

"An exciting approach to the action??!!" What is Bale gonna take out Skynet with fucking firecrackers??? Jesus Christ, there's gonna be a fucking witchhunt for these two jerk offs once this crap comes out. Unreal......

And dude, please, yes, I KNOW Star Wars is totally ridiculous and campy. But it knows this, and its still great. T2, on the other hand, wants so desperately to be taken seriously, and so completely fails in this regard that it becomes an unintentional comedy. Its inept, its ugly, its dumb, and its corny as all hell. And I as a HUGE fan of the first one, saw it in the theatres like 10 times over the summer it came out. And then T2 came and it was like, what the fuck is this shit? The Terminator is an ersatz father figure now? You have got to be fucking kidding me. It was TERRIBLE. I hated it, my girlfriend (at the time) hated it, and pretty much everyone I know hated it. Enough already with sequels galore on hit movies. They're never up to the standard of the original. This is the same for any movie franchise you can think of. What happens is that producers see $$$$$$$$ and the idea and creativity about what made an original great is lost in the mad rush for money. Ugh.

    by murdermostfowl

That there even *is* a sequel is squeezing blood from a stone. You are rejecting T3, but expecting T4 to be a legitimate successor? Fact is, T2 was amazing and should have been the end of it all. The TV show gets a pass IMHO because they are able to tell an ongoing story that doesn't have to shock-and-awe in 2 hours. T4 will likely be terrible, or mediocre at best and wind up making T3 look good. The Alien(s) franchise has gone through the same thing, has it not?

who has been with franchise since it began wants to see it dragged through the PG-13, soccer mom mud, but yet, they continue to fuck the fans over. You know, the ones that actually paid enough attention to the property to keep it relevant enough for talentless mouth breathers like Derek Anderson (CEO of Halcyon) come along and rape it for all the merchandising money you can squeeze out of it.See what being loyal to an intellectual property gets you? The ONLY way to save this -- besides Bale walking off -- is for James "King of the World" Cameron to come home and snatch this potential abortion from Anderson's cold, lifeless hands and turn it over to someone who actually wants to make a movie the fans will love instead of one that has a new line of action figures and snazzy Taco Bell tie-ins...

I love T1, absolutely love it, but you're seriously going to say that the escape from the mental hospital scenes weren't cinematic brilliance? Sarah Connor running for her life from the T-1000 and whipping around the corner, having a heart attack moment when she sees Arnie in front of her? That still gives me the chills every time I see it.

Studios should NOT call the shots - ever.

    by theyreflockingthisway

When a studio hires a director, they are hiring his or her creative vision. That means they want this person to make a movie for them. The only limitations they should give them is on budget.

When the studio interferes in other things such as story, the amount of violence it has, the bad language etc - they are taking away the director's creative freedom.

Sure, it's perfectly acceptable for the studio to say to the director "hey, we were discussing in the office and think this film needs a giant spider - you should think about putting one in the end" - fine! But if they DEMAND that giant spider then they're more than likely ruining the vision the director has for the movie. Suggestions should be made, but overall the director should have the final say in this.

Studios need to realise that if they don't like how a director is doing something they shouldn't have hired that director in the first place.

Look at films where the studio has interfered - it's never good. Even films that are much more respected now, such as Blade Runner and Alien 3, performed poorly originally and have only got their recognition when the director's inteded vision was eventually discovered.

It's pointless aiming a film where humanity is destroyed by things called Terminators at children. Children, believe it or not, actually arn't stupid and knows there should be blood and the character feels pain. Hiding that just insults their intelligence and they'll hate the film for it too.

Look at Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. They KILLED their respective franchise and are regarded as embarrassments. With this Terminator movie they may be thinking "hey we'll make a bit more money if we can get kids to go too!" but they're not looking at the bigger picture.

You may make a bit more money on this film than you would having it rated R but you certainly won't on the next. You'll kill your precious franchise and no one will want to come back to it.

    Die Hard was unremarkable...

    by darth macchio

And the only thing I actually do remember about that movie is the whole bullshit hoopla over the pg-13 rating and WalterB coming in here and telling us it was ballz out madness blowing 'may as well be hard R!!" all the other DieHard's away and coming closest to the original DH. That Bartleby dude is just annoying now (there was hope back in the Jeepers Creepers day plus where did his super fine sister go from that movie?!?!). Deadwood guy is alright tho I hear Hitman was ass. I get the pros and cons...how in today's movie audience you can get away with more violence and what pg-13 usually comes down too is naked flesh and the word "fuck" (or more hardcore profanity like "cocksucker") and in an action movie filmed in the modern world I think the first words to come to the lips of the average person when crazy ass shit is blowing up and the city is going apeshit isn't "SHIT!!!" or "WHAT THE...?"People go "FUCK!!!!" or "What the fuck?!?!?!" I noticed that in Cloverfield...many times I'd have gone "FUCK!!!" and "Dude, did you bang that chick?!?!?!" not "SHIT!!!" and "Did you sleep with her yet?"...what are we here...our fucking parents? Carlin is right....we made these words up and now we don't allow ourselves to say them....it's stupid. If your kid will melt if he hears the word "fuck" then you're not doing a good job preparing your kid for...you know....not getting a god damn cushy ride all thru life and never having an unpleasant moment. No boobs on the street....well...fine...ok..if it has to be that way..but for fuck's sake can't I just say FUCK without someone shitting an egg roll over how they have to explain how the mean man said the nasty word to their sheltered 'training wheels for life' kids?!?!?!? Who Doesn't Like Hot Butch Chicks Beating Up Orderlies?

    by laserpants

But, nah, the whole thing. Just bad. And I never really bought she was a badass. Not like Ripley, and certainly nothing like The Bride (the ultimate chick bad ass). And geez, when they meet up with the Sarah's old pals and she speaks in that faltering spanish? Fuckin' HILARIOUSLY awful. Like cringe-inducing. She's so over the top about it, that its just hard to watch without laughing, because its supposed to be SO GRIM AND SERIOUS, but comes off more cornball. And the ludicrously overwrought musings of Butch Sarah? Just bad. Bad because it wanted so bad to be serious, that it comes off as comical. And don't even get me stared on RoboDaddy, or how unbelievably UNCOOL John "Bitchy Teen Twink" Connor was in the movie. JC was a much cooler character in T3. I did like the elements where Robodaddy would blow and/or punch holes in Mercury Man's inegrity. But, you know, whatevs. The whole bathroom throwdown in T3 is way cooler in terms of delivering the goods. Call it a money grab (it was) call it what you will, I thought T3, being more upfront about the campy comedy aspects (resizable roboboobs? yes!), AND delivering asskicking action scenes was much more effective for me. AND it had a way darker ending. T3 is better. Sorry. I mean, of course, T1 is the only classic. Its really the only that should have been made. I mean, even with dated effects, its just a cool, well done story. And mostly it holds up. The cheesiness of the efx makes it almost more enjoyable for me as a nostalgia object. I wonder how long it will be before Cameron pulls a Lucas and digitals that all up?

    by performingmonkey

Even if T4 was R it would never match Cameron. Just look at the opening diner scene in T2 when Arnie walks in nude and takes everyone on. That's an R scene, no mistake. But filmmakers get into their head that R means too hard and gritty for a general audience to like anymore. Well Cameron's T2 contained PLENTY for a general audience. It was an all-round fucking great movie from start to finish, you get that feeling watching it.

Batman Forever was a perfect example of the sheer fucking idiocy and ingnorance of the studios. By all means just a horrible HORRIBLE movie. Bat suit nipples, Multi Colored Neon, bad BAD acting, terrible script and story, pointless one liners and humor, etc etc yet somehow it made money. Enough to to merit rushing another garbage sequel that was loaded with even more of that same element. All because they thought that was what the people wanted. Fantastic Four kinda followed that same route. And this in their ignorance, killed off the frnachise and began a decade long finger pointing session

Ok...Conners is bad in T2 but the Bride??? Seriosuly?

    by darth macchio

Giant man-feet and behemoth man-hands and that ostrich like profile? Plus people tore up the Matrix crew (Reeves, Fishburn, Moss, Weaving) for shitty skills even with a great FC (Woo Ping). Well...Ping was on Kill Bill and pretty muc every scene Uma was in was cringe-inducing cheese except for the fight with the asian schoolgirl with the spikey ball on a chain...which was dumb for different reasons. You bring up a great point and something sorely lacking in modern action movies and that is the baddass female protagonist. And I agree with some of the critiques over Hamilton...unfortunately, she's not that great of an actor (self-aware throughout filming for the most part) but I think she pulls it off. Nothing touches Ripley of course...Sigourney is pure female baddass without a hint of masculinity (Hamilton's problem somewhat...she was a little "man-like"). I think Beckinsale kicked serious ass without being man-like in Underworld altho I know most TB'ers hated it...but the Bride was supposed to be the most dangerous woman on the planet. To me it looked like what it was...a dainty and mostly mediocre physical shape Uma Thurman doing the best she can do with zero martial training and no serious work off screen. I could be wrong on her training in which case she's pathetically uncoordinated cause her "most deadly woman on the planet" looked more like Uma pretending to be some 70's exploitation bullshit movie. Of course...I've haven't been on the "OMFG Uma is the hottest woman EVER!!!" bandwagon since Baron Munchausen but I digress.

R-rated AHNULD Action Movies of the 1980s

    by joey_redballs

This is probably most true of Arnold Schwarzenegger's R-rated action movies, but I remember when Commando, Total Recall, or The Running Man would come on regular television...we watched for a few minutes and turned it off because all the "good parts" had been cut out. Those movies were guilty pleasures, not high art, with Commando being a near farce of itself. Sure, Totall Recall and The Running Man had some very interesting themes...but they are still shoot'em up movies that lack watchability without all the insane gore. And it's not always about the gore either. It's about the vulgarity too. What's the bar scene in Total Recall like without seeing the 3-titted woman? I guess if they remade Total Recall as PG-13 pap, they could still have the 3-titted woman, but she would be wearing a custom, 3-titted, bikini top. My point is that those movies are hurt badly when you remove the R-rated material. Would AVP-Requiem have sucked less if it was PG-13 too? No, it would be even worse because the frequent gory deaths were the only watchable parts. Sadly, John McTiernan (he didn't just direct the original Die Hard, but he also directed the original Predator) wasn't available to do AVP-R because of his legal woes. But what were we supposed to do?...go see AVP-R even though everyone said it SUCT (it does) just to support R-rated cinema? Hell no. But to "The Suits", AVP-R is a big reason NOT to produce R-rated action, scifi, or horror. But why are teens flocking to mega-turds like the Prom Night remake? I guess MySpace and Facebook were down during Prom Night's opening weekend. Or maybe it's because it was the only movie that appealed to their demographic that theaters would allow them to see that weekend. That goes for all those creepy but not scary PG-13 Japanese horror remakes too. The kids are going to see what is available. AVP and AVP-R were both missing 3 big things from their respective franchises. The first 2 missing items were their stars. No Sigourney Weaver and no Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 3rd missing element was a compelling, original story. But what are you gonna do when your stars are old, and you're re-hashing the same monster stories? The first time around, audiences were curious as to what would happen if Aliens met Predators. AVP suct, but it made money. The second time around, audiences were no longer curious as to what would happen when Aliens met Predators, and when they heard the words "sucks even more than the first one", it was all over for that movie's box office. If you can't squeeze anymore juice out of an aging star because they're wrinkled, or they're Governor, or both...stick to the R-rated material, write a GOOD story, or dare I say it...create a new franchise! Abandon the sequels of an aged franchise, and be original. There's a reason why "The Suits" that came before you stopped making sequels to that franchise. It was done. Disney movies should have family-fun magic. Porno movies should have hardcore fucking and bad acting. (Close your eyes and just imagine a PG-13 porno movie.) And Sci-Fi Action movies should have gore and vulgarity! We miss you AHNULD! :( P.S.I miss Arnold so much that I bought Raw Deal on DVD for $3 at Kmart. There's a good example of missing 1 of your 3 elements for a successful action movie. They had the star and the violence, but had an awful story that wasn't so bad it was good like Commando...it was so bad, it was terrible.I still like the "SHIT" cake scene.

But will a PG-13 rating prevent me from enjoying a big-budget, slickly made piece of sci-fi candy? Not unless I'm a joyless, self-righteous film snob who insists that films be made for me, and only me. I've read a few posts here from people who say they boycotted Die Hard 4 over the PG-13 rating. Really. As the execs at Fox count their money, I'm sure they're distraught by the fact that Joe Asshole denied them his $10. The Terminator films are a franchise; franchises are not high art; franchises exist to make money; if they ceased to make money, they would cease to be a franchise; decisions made with respect to franchise films are always made with foremost concern for the bottom line. Cool PG-13 films are made all the time. Iron Man is a cool PG-13 film. The Dark Knight, the new trailer for which is making everyone orgasm, will be a cool PG-13 film. But wait, you say: this is a TERMINATOR film, and the rules are different for TERMINATOR films! Well, no, they aren't, and if that offends your ideal of what the Terminator series is all about, no one will miss you next summer during your boycott as you watch T2 for the 400th time and bemoan those Hollywood bastards for raping your childhood. This constant carping for a "hard R" is boring. Everyone here knows that PG-13 is where the money is, so why should this decision come as the slightest surprise? From the day that this project was announced, the producers made it clear that this was the first installment of a new series of films that would exist in a new creative universe. The Cameron (Mostow)/Schwarzenegger films were R; the McG/Bale films are PG-13. I'm an unapologetic lover of well-made, big-budget entertainment spectacles. If it was up to me, Jerry Bruckheimer would be receiving the Irving Thalberg award in the near future. T4's going to bad because we won't get a visceral shot of someone's head being blown off? Money shots like that weren't enough to save AVP:R, so why are so many people talking about an R rating as though it's an automatic indicator of quality? If McG truly is a hack, then this movie will be terrible regardless of its rating. If the script is solid and McG handles the action well, then this will be perfectly entertaining as a PG-13 film. Why not root for the success of this project rather than denounce it as a failure before we've seen a single frame of it? It's escapism folks, it's supposed to be fun.

Parents, take your kids to R-Rated Movies

    by gozu

I'm totally serious. Fathers and sons, sons and daughters, going to an R-Rated film together is a unique and all too often missed family experience. If it gets too scary, you're there for your kid, and you can talk about it afterward. There are endless discussions about morality, violence in the media, and other "adult" issues that can stem from seeing an R-Rated movie with your child. Then R-Rated movies will make more money and we won't have to suffer watered down versions of "Die Hard" and "Terminator."

Yes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and Star Wars is one of the best movies ever, especially when you see it for the first time as a 10 year old. And T2 is one of the best films of the 90s.

I see Laserpants is still at it about T2 and T3

    by tvguy4566

I have to say the future savior of the free world being Claire Dane's bitch for most of T3 was spectacular. I hope they continue it in T4. I already have the dialog dancing around in my head:

"Honey, Joe just called and he and the guys are going to bring down Skynet tonight."
"But John, you promised to stay home and watch '27 Dresses' with me."
"But hon, I never get to blow up Skynet."
"Skynet will be there tomorrow night and you can have your fun because me and the girls are going out tomorrow."
    "But..."
"You love those Terminators more than me..."
    "Alright I'll stay home."
T3 sucked because they neutered John Connor along with bringing back Arnold for no apparent reason other than to make Arnold another $20 million.
It was already explained in another thread why the T-1000 couldn't replicate Sarah's voice. The liquid nitrogen had damaged the T-1000. It was clearer in the director's cut, but pretty clear in the origal theatrical version too.

It's "Yippee Ki-Yay MotherBANG!!!" all over again

    by han cholo

Except now they're just fucking everything up with their eyes open. And it's fuckin' Terminator!!!

I'd like to respond to the posters that say we should just accept the changes and wait and see. I say FUCK THAT!!! We make & break motherfuckin' careers here at AICN which is why the studios and the press get pissed when we talk shit about shit movies before they're released here (I'm looking at YOU not-so-fantastic four and your lame excuse for a Galactus, a fuckin' cloud and an inept director).

Who do you think helped jumpstarted Bale's career? Shit we practically casted him in Batman Begins after seeing his potential for action in Equilibrium. They would have casted some other flavor of the month two-bit actor had we not stepped up to give him the geek blessing and now his career has skyrocketed.

Then you got people like Bret Ratner who now have trouble finding movies to fuck up with his (lack of) directing skill. Hell, even McG was a miracle because he somehow got handed Terminator behind our backs cause he was on his way out of Hollywood for the awful TV series he produced and the even shittier movies he made. Fucking Michael Bay pulled a mediocre Transformers out of his ass but because enough idiots paid to see it, he gets another shot at the chagrin of true Transformers fans but I can almost guarantee the next film will be all out awful and will not even be recognizable to anyone as Transformers. Then we got another shit director fucking up GI-Joe. I think the costume pics just killed any good will the movie might have had after they showed Snake Eyes and Larry Hama was announced as working on the film. Now it just doesn't matter because the Joes all look like the Matrix and Xmen had a baby. In otherwords, just plain BAD. I forsee that this movie will bomb as well after the utter disrespect the've shown. Whether any of these fools get work after the debacles they're directing remains to be seen but I can say that Talkbackers will be watching with baited breath to put these idiots out of work with some scathing negative reviews and witty banter.

The endless "replicate sarah's voice" thing

    by murdermostfowl

OK I never thought this was an issue, but TVguy echos... why does this keep getting brought up? It's answered in the director's cut and even without that explanation, the T-1000 doesn't say that he CAN'T replicate her voice ( which he later does ) he just DOESN'T. Looks to me like he was just exerting his control over her... torturing her because he CAN.

Some people ( like laserPants ) please stop looking for flaws. it's silly.... you can always take things to the extreme:
The T-1000 also likely possesses sufficient knowledge to build an atomic bomb. Why not avoid conflict with Sarah altogether, just spend some quality time impersonating a nuclear physicist, collect all the necessary parts over a period of years, make sure John Conner is still in the city, and detonate it?

Why not go back further in time and Kill Sarah Conner when she's 10 years old?

Why not go back only a few months in time and Kill John Conner when he's in some known location in the future?

Why not go back in time to the 80's and kill the power to the cyberdyne building so that Sarah can't crush Arnie in T-1?

Why not go back in time and morph into a banana peel that Reese slips on as soon as he warps in in the alley way and break his neck and dies?

Oh yeah, because none of those would make a good movie.

    BTW

    by tvguy4566

I don't think Live Free and Die Hard sucked because of a PG-13 rating. I think it sucked because it betrayed an iconic character and was nothing more than a generic action movie.
I hate the fact that no one has the balls to make R-rated movies anymore, but making a movie an R-Rating doesn't overcome a bad script.
I think a PG-13 rating will stop T4 from being everything it can be, but a good script and good acting can overcome the loss of violence and lanuage.

I agree. If the worst complaint about a movie is one minor continuity error that is pretty well inferred why it would happen and would have been outright explained if they didn't cut down the movie for time sake, then the movie is doing pretty well. This seems to be LaserPants biggest issue with movie (since he constantly brings it up) and both scenes took up a combined minute of a 2 1/2 hour movie.

In cut scenes he was merging with the things he touched. The real Sarah Connor was the logical choice. Besides, he tried the voice thing with John's step mother and it didn't work. Anyone who grew up in the 80's knows how gay this is, but apparently 18-25 year olds these days think otherwise. This is the only reasoning i can come up with for why these shitty movies are continuously being made these days. Kudos to stallone for trying to make everyone remember how hardcore action movies are supposed to be made with the new rambo, but apparently the pussyness has spread too far throughout our society to change at this point.

I understand your argument and agree in part. The issue is you say "The Terminator is a franchise" - franchises don't get to be franchises unless the fundamental starting product/products are of value. If Terminator 3 replaced Terminator 1 as a movie, then it's questionable whether it would have spawned any sequels on its own merit. If this argument is furthered, how much longer can the franchise continue on the goodwill of T1 and T2 alone?

    by maniaq

maybe it's coz I was around 10 when I saw Terminator - the original and best - but you know there are "R" rated films and there a "R" rated films...
I guess that's why people use the term "hard-R rating" coz films like Terminator were not in the least bit disturbing and, seriously, there was not a single swear-word or "adult" concept that wasn't commonplace on the playground (ok there wasn't any fucking going on but it's not like anybody was ignorant about the birds and the bees) - but then films like Halloween or Evil Dead - I couldn't get all the way through Evil Dead!
There's a certain kind of film that can be PG-13 (Raiders springs instantly to mind) no problems and we don't even NEED them to be gritty or "realistic" or whatever - and I think McG is not a bad fit for that kind of film, really.
Popcorn flicks! No danger of CHOKING on your popcorn watching a stake go through someone's eye or something.
Then there are films that SHOULD be "R" rated. I remember the guy who shot the scene in Alien when the little critter came out of Kane's stomach - he was THERE, working with practical effects and a camera and it STILL made him throw up!
Die Hard 4 is a perfect case in point. You can't take on KIND of film and try to make it into another KIND of film and expect it to work.
    Square peg. Round hole.
This project was doomed the moment McG was attached and it's going to suck to MI:2 levels if it even gets finished.

Who knows, maybe the writers wrote a not so violent script? It is possible to have action without a shitload of gore. Besides, it isn't excessive violence the made the first two flicks what most of you call "Sci-fi masterpieces" is it? There will probably be a few "fucks" tossed around as there are in MANY PG-13 films nowadays, as well as some blood and explosions. Just not as graphic as the first two. Big deal. I'm more worried about the story/direction and I fail to see how the rating has any bearing on that.
