Tid bit re: "The Simpsons"
SPOILER ALERT !!
Glen here...
...with a quick message from THE BOGGLE KING.
In his message to me, The Boggle King seemed to believe no one was interested in The
Simpsons.
Wrong.
Lotta people ask me about The Simpsons every day. Just never seem to get too much
info to post about it :-(
Here's what Boggle King had to say about The Simpsons. I can't imagine that such
things really matter in cases like this, but one of TBK's newsbits might be considered a SPOILER.
As such, don't read this if you're determined to shield yourself from plot details about The
Simpsons.
The Boggle King wrote:
...one of the writers from "The Simpsons" came to my school and talked to us
for awhile.
Anyway, it came out that next January or February, a "major
character" was going to die. He didn't actually confirm anything, but he definitely implied that it
would be
Flanders' wife (I think her name's Maude).
Possibly because they wanted Ned to go dating (sounds good to
me).
He also said that the Halloween episode would have a thing about the mellenium
bug.

Hey, all...
"Moriarty" here.
As a long-time SIMPSONS fan, I'd be impressed if they actually did this and killed Maude. Growth and change are not things normally associated with animated shows. Everyone's always the same age, and nothing ever really evolves. THE SIMPSONS has consistently played against those rules, but this would be one of the more dramatic examples. I applaud the creative staff at the show for continuing to take risks even this far into the show's run. It's the reason I stay tuned in.
"Moriarty" out. -
That's an odd place for the show to go. I like the Y2K bug thing. Though, by that time in October, everyone will be doing some sort of Y2K show of some kind. But kill Maude?!? I hope they give a good reason for it, and not just use it as a gimmick to refresh the show a little.

As a Simpsons maniac I'd hate to see them do this only because it takes the path that so many crappy sitcoms have taken in the past. They forget that they are a comedy NOT a drama. Every sitcom in history has its "serious" show and everyone of them is forced and out of place because it takes the show away from what it's about- mainly being funny. The Simpsons has always stayed from serious episodes and I'd hate to see them make that mistake now. The purpose of a comedy is to make you laugh not go for the Emmy. Besides, who is Homer going to have the hots for if Maude dies?
-
The Simpson's is by far the funniest and wittiest show on tv. Although Family Guy is trying to earn that respect. Anyway, I would find it odd if Maude died. I can't remember off the top of my head anyone on that show dying, although it was thought Mr. Burns was going to die at the end of one season. But of course he lived. That turned out to be a spoof of Dallas' "Who Shot J.R." bit, maybe a plot with Maude dying will turn out to be a spoof of Dallas' Patrick Duffy "it was all a dream" season. Then they can have Ned date, and then Maude come back at the end of the season. Ah, speculation. Ain't it great?!

THE SIMPSONS is my all-time favorite television show. Each 22-minute episode is so brilliantly written and drawn, it easily surpasses anything on the tube today. I can't believe it's been ten years (come December) since the first half hour show aired. I was in eighth grade, and that first show, SIMPSONS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE, was unlike anything I'd seen on TV (I had no knowledge of the thirty-second shorts that had been appearing on THE TRACEY ULLMAN show since 1987). Week after week I tuned to FOX to watch my rapidly favorite TV family in another misadventure. Over the years, I've probably seen each episode more than ten times (I catch the reruns every night), and can quote dialogue verbatum. Among my favorite episodes: Homer's barbershop quartet (brilliant, dead-on parody of the Beatles), Homer goes to college, the one where the Critic (Jon Lovitz) visits Springfield to judge their film festival, 22 Short Films About Springfield, the one where the Simpsons go to New York to pick up Homer's car, any of the Halloween shows, the one where Marge goes on a crusade against cartoon violence, the one where Bart and Lisa write an Itchy & Scratchy cartoon, the STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE musical parody, this year's Super Bowl episode, the 138th episode which showcased clips and outtakes from earlier seasons...the list goes on and on, but these are the few that came immediately to my mind. This show is still the freshest and funniest on television, and while some more recent episodes haven't been as funny as the earlier ones, they are still eons ahead of the crap that Must-See TV and the like constantly shove in my face. Did I mention that I love THE SIMPSONS? Oh, and for the major character who's supposed to die: my money's on Grampa.
-
Although I like Jedi's idea about the Duffy it was all a dream situation, could be very funny!
-
Despite the fact that no one gets any older, there HAVE been other deaths among the recurring characters on "The Simpsons," namely Dr. Marvin Monroe and "Bleeding Gums" Murphy. So we know they can do it, if they want to.
-
I wanted to mention this on a fresh sheet, because I don't want it to soil my above post. I HATE that shitty new SIMPSONS rip-off called THE FAMILY GUY. Unfortunately, I was subjected to this wannabe piece of shit after the Super Bowl (and before THE SIMPSONS). I thought, hey, a new animated show. Better check it out. This show makes SOUTH PARK (another show I despise) look like a freakin' DISNEY production. FAMILY GUY is everything THE SIMPSONS is not. While THE SIMPSONS is clever and occasionally distasteful (in a good way), FAMILY GUY goes for the distaste all away (I'm judging this on one episode, the pilot, and several snatches I caught while flipping through the channels). Hitler references? Har har. THE SIMPSONS had Hitler references, but not in every consecutive show at the beginning of its run. A Kennedy Pez dispenser that loses its head? Chortle. I'm sick of seeing ads and commercials for this waste of time. Hopefully this trash will go the way of FAMILY DOG and CAPITOL CRITTERS. Maybe THE SIMPSONS should put those funny tombstones back at the start of their Halloween show this year (among the best: ELVIS--ACCEPT IT, PAUL MCCARTNEY, A BALANCED BUDGET, CAPITOL CRITTERS, and a frozen tomb with WALT DISNEY printed on it). One of this year's epitaphs: FAMILY GUY.

Best written characters on TV.
-
The Simpsons is the best tv show EVER. Even its weaker episodes have an incident or something in the background that will make me laugh so hard I practically shit myself. Maybe I should see a doctor about that.
-
there hasnt been ANY changes to the Simpsons since Maggie shot Mr Burns (with the exception of Phil Hartman dying) that show is as funny as ever, but it really hasnt evolved much in the last few years. Its the same basic Simpsons.... :O) McK
-
Marvin Monroe's death was never shown. There is a just a mention of a Dr. Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital.
Having Bleeding Gums Murphy die is completely different from Maude Flanders die. Bleeding Gums was lucky if he was a background character in a dozen episodes. Maude Flanders, on the other hand, is the wife of a major recurring character who has been in tons of episodes. Bleeding Gums Murphy had no family and the only person who cared when he died was Lisa and she was able to play with him from the "great beyond" allowing the episode to have an almost triumphant ending as opposed to a down beat one. Maude Flanders has a husband and two kids there could be no "happy" ending if she died. Who really gives a rat's ass if Flanders dates anyway? The more I think about this the more it seems to not be true. Or at the very least unlike The Simpsons. If Maude dies do you think that it's going to be a continuing story throughout the season? Unlikely. Does it seem likely that Flanders is going to date in the same episode that his wife dies in? Unlikely. Even if it is a continuing story, does it seem like Ned Flanders to start dating EVER again after the death of his wife? No. This wouldn't make sense for the character. Charlie Church would never date again in his life let alone that episode or that year. -
Shit; my computer had some problems there, folks. Anyway, I just want to say that my favorite episode ever was the death of Bleeding Gums one. First of all, it showed that the "Simpsons" did, after all, have a heart, and wasn't just a crass pile of Bart gags. I refer, of course, to Bart's choice between the world's largest Steve Allen pog, and the pivotal record album, "Sax on the Beach." But it also had one of the funniest endings of anything I have ever seen, with James Earl Jones appearing in the sky ala "Lion King," and doing all of his famous voice-overs in a row (Vader, the Lion King [which had an extra dig at Disney with the Kimba/Simba confusion], the CNN voice, and of course Bleeding Gums). Just brilliant! DOes anyone like this episode, or do we have other favorites?
-
Groening...make this your last season. Do some crazy shit for the last few episodes, ending with an amazing cliffhanger. Then, wait a year or so, then bring back all the best writers (O'Brian, Schwartzwelder) to produce a "Simpsons" feature length film. Do it!
By the way, the best episode is the one where Homer and Burns get trapped in a cabin and start hallucinating.
Homer (regarding the killer snowmen): "What do we do?"
Burns: "Oh...wouldn't you like to know?" -
It's hard to single one episode out as my all time favorite, but "Girlie Edition," the episode when Bart and Lisa anchor a kids' news show, was one of their best. Any show with an insane, old woman screaming and hurling armloads of cats at a fleeing Lisa, and a helper monkey who gets so fat he must struggle to breath is pretty special. I nearly hurt myself laughing when that old lady started flinging cats at Lisa. And along the lines of the possibility of Maude getting the ax (for real this time, not her favorite ficus) let's all "pray for mojo."
-
Mine is the one where Bart gets a "Bigger Brother" and Homer gets a smaller brother to get even. Cool fight scene that begins at a Sea World knock-off.
-
Phil Hartman was my hero. So I really see no reason why the Simpsons don't have Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure end up killing each other, or dying in a plane crash, or something. (Even though those are two of THE BEST characters.) Maude Flanders sucks. Kill her. My favorite episode is the one where Homer finds the sugar spilled all over the road. He calls the shards of glass and rusty nails "prizes" when Lisa notices them on her plate. Then the bees come and steal the mound of sugar, along with a British guy who takes some when Homer falls asleep as he guards the pile. "Family Guy" rules. It's not even close to "Fish Police."
-
There've actually been a few changes to THE SIMPSONS over the years -- Which were after (I think) and more lasting than Burn's getting shot...
- Lisa became a vegetarian. She no longer eats porkchops and such with the family, and its often mentioned.
- Milhouse's parents split-up. And both parents went on the dating scene (Anyone recall "Can I Borrow a Feeling"?)... Which
is why I don't think Flanders dating is anything too major of
a deal.
I'm sure there are others; things like Apu getting married, Skinner and Crabapple's secret romance,
Skinner's secret life before he took the place of the real Skinner, etc.

While I have some trouble figuring out just how to make Maude's death funny. The Simpsons is one of the most consistently well written tv shows on the air, bar none. To the person who complained that it stopped being funny 5 years ago, it's obvious you just aren't watching the same series (or anything else on TV for that matter). While it has it's clunkers, the level of writing has been higher than that of any other TV series. Just take a look at the garbage that's passing for comedy on television then take a second look at The Simpsons. I think you'll finally see it for what it is - an enduring, funny series that I hope doesn't go off the air for some time to come.

One of best scenes ever created was the "In The Garden Of Eden" hymn by I. Ron Butterfly in the Bart's Soul episode. Especially the candle part. It's a perfect example of the great writing on the show. What kind of sick mind would think of that? I don't think that they should make a movie out of it. I can watch the show for hours on end, but those are separate episodes. I don't think a 90 - 120 minute movie could deliver. If it should fail it could possibly mean the end of the Simpsons and that's a future that I don't want to ponder.
-
The Simpsons is one of the top 5 comedies in the history of television. Right up there with M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore and a few others. Although there are way many more laughs per show on The Simpsons.
What about all the absolutely hilarious songs they had.
Mr. Burns "Be My Vest" is my favorite. -
Maude is a vital part of the Flanders Flock, and I chuckle everytime I think of Homer asking her to get him some peanuts from that big bowl..."Not those peanuts, *the ones at the bottom*."
It would be a shame to see her go, and I have $5 that says no major character dies.
Two episodes are tied as my favorites...the Duff Gardens episode and the one where Homer stays home from church and eventually forms his own religion. -
Somebody please start a petition or something to campaign to get some of the original writers back. Cuz right now all we're getting is just bullcrap in order to extend the serious to Fox's pleasure. As a longtime Simpsons fan, I feel cheated whenever the new episodes suck or they have a major change (such as Ned is a senior, etc..).
Maude better not freaking die, alright? The writers already screwed with Ned's family too much, with the senior thing and the psycho childhood thing, the last thing we need is Flanders to start dating.
Now every other ep has the simpsons going on some kind of roadtrip and meeting some new people, but those freaking new characters are always so freaking boring and have no stay... WHY DO YOU PEOPLE CONTINUE TO MESS WITH US? Why are you butchering the series and not pulling simpsons back to its true original roots - which, in my opinion (you guys should have yours), is a family sitcom but with much greater freedom. No one seems to understand the fact that somewhere along the way, the love has gone out of the series. What happened to the days when there is a moral behind each ep, even though the moral is kinda stupid but real????
I realize at this point I'm ranting like a maniac and not making sense, but I just wanted to express my anger. (Help me out here guys)
But enough of the screwing around, and bring the simpsons back into the heart of their own city instead of having adventures all over the globe every day...

Wow....so much response on such a little thing. I didn't think you were even going to post it! Anyway, I feel like I should say something. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THIS AS "HELLA-HILARIOUS". Right now, I want all of you to picture in your poor minds, the hilarity that will commence when Flanders has to date. I thing Kearny should take him to a Rave! Also, you guys shouldn't make so much fuss over this 'cause:
1. It's not confirmed
2. Remember what they did with the "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" thing (they made 2 fake endings so no one could find out). Not only will Matt Groening and his crazy lawyers come after me. They'll probably change who dies (Suggestions: Hans Moleman and the fake death of the Bumblebee man)
Allright, I'm done rambling -
Sorry for above. Hey shout out to the dude or dudette boasting the title vansmak. Where exactly did you get the right to take one of the premier sports radio hosts name as your own. I know everyone has their own cute little user ID, but I take personal offense that you could think that you are even close to being cool enough to nabbing the pimp in the box's alter ego. Just thought I'd let you know I think it's weak, Rome would never be associated with a page like this unfortunately cuz he hates all rabid fans of things like star wars and simpsons and all the other good stuff. Finally I don't believe the clones would think it was in good taste, but then again that's my humbel opinion from one clone to another. OUT!

My favorite Simpsons episode? Probably a tie between "Mr. Plow" and "Kamp Krusty."
