Indiana Jones & The Glorious Quicktime Trailer - Now in HD!

Published at:  May 03, 2008 10:35:26 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Over at IndianaJones.Com - we have the debut, in Quicktime HD - of the trailer you probably saw on IRON MAN this weekend. The trailer hints at some cool stuff... apparently in the temple of the crystal skull - it is guarded by the living dead. That's cool. There also seems to be some sort of underground testing facility - and man... how much do you love that WILD ONE homage that Steven did with Shia? Yeah? It makes me a tad nervous too. At least he doesn't have the trophy tied to the light. Anyway - here ya go - in 720p happy perfection...

Click to see more of the Adventure!

For those of you that are unfamiliar with THE WILD ONE - I'll include its trailer so you can understand the "homage" that Spielberg and Lucas have for Mutt...

    by hybrid16

looks good to me, and further proof that Ford is ALIVE. This and the last TV spot with his glad to help line makes me confident. For me thats what this film rests on - Fords ability to play the character as we remember him, rather than the Ford we know from Firewall, K-19 etc.

    Indiana Jones

    by fassbinder79

That trailer is half and half. Ford's delivery is kinda spotty, the action in certain shots looks cool and then in others it looks terrible and overall the timing seems off. Cate Blanchett also appears out of place. I don't buy her a a villain in this unless they are going completely for camp. Keep in mind that in every Indy film before this one there was a real sense of dread to the proceedings...That seems absent from this trailer. I will definitely see this in the theater because I am too curious...But I'm a bit worried when the most convincing acting in the trailer is coming from Shia Labeouf. They should have done an Indiana Jones film years ago. This is all about Spielberg trying to make a quick buck.

    by cobra--kai

Looks good... but not really good. All those shots of the temple rearranging itself with moving cogs and such like kind of reminds me a little too much of the TOMB RAIDER and ALIEN VS PREDATOR movies. Hopefully it'll all come together, with not only great stunts and visuals but an engaging storyline and character development too. Here's hoping!

While I'm not that stoked about this trailer this movie is going to GOBS AND GOBS OF MOOLAH when it comes out. 400 million worldwide is my prediction. If the sequel to POTC can make over 300 mil then you better believe Indy is going to rake in tons of cash for all concerned. Its probably going to be a sizeable dissapointment as a film but it will have a tremendous box office profit. No question about it.

...Transformers (not Indy 4) was all about Spielberg making a quick buck. I hardly call an almost TWO DECADE development process "trying to make a quick buck"... Plus Spielberg has enough cash to collectively buy almost every person that visits this website... That's not to say the man won't ever direct or develop another film primarily because of it is commercial potential... I just don't think you can ascribe THAT particular cynical feeling to Indy 4.

Raiders is indeed a masterpiece. Possibly the greatest adventure film ever made. Doom is pretty juvenile (great when I was a kid) doesn't hold up now. Crusade is pretty tight with Indy's back and forth with his father and the grail stuff works a whole lot better than it should. But I sort of look at this new Indy trailer and it makes me think of the difference between Lethal Weapon 1 and LW 4. And there is a HUGE difference. Same characters we love...But more than a bit off and far too silly for its own good. Worth seeing for all us 80's nuts...Certainly. But its definitely going to have problems.

    I don't think so...

    by laserhead

Worldwide B.O. is a different story ... I meant it won't break $200 million domestic. If this is in any way a mediocre movie, the fan base isn't enough to push it into the financial stratosphere, and today's kids could give a shit less about Indiana Jones-- they grew up inundated with stuff that swiped and expanded on the best things in movies like Raiders, rendering them into cliches in the process. I don't believe for a second that this will make the kind of money that either of the Pirates sequels pulled down. With Pirates, the youth demographic wanted to see Johnny Depp in his freaky-cool costumes, delivering that performance, with a ton of awesome special effects surrounding him. That attraction isn't there for Indy. After I saw 'Dead Man's Chest' on opening day, I predicted it would make $400 million domestic; and when I saw 'Superman Returns' I said it would stall just shy of $200 million. I don't have much faith in my predictions before I get a chance to actually see the movie, but nothing I've seen indicates that Indy IV is going to be this massive hit that all the old fans are hoping for. Nobody in the theater cheered this trailer when I saw Iron Man.

I'll grant you that Transformers was another quick buck for Spielberg as well but so is this one. FYI - I work in the film industry and I can tell you for a fact that the reason Indy took so long to get off the ground had more to do with Lucas than Steven. GL (to his credit) after how badly Phantom Menace got panned wanted to be really careful about the script. He held up this production getting made. There were several drafts of the script that SS liked and the GL wouldn't greenlight. Shamalyan and Darabont's drafts come to mind. This was not a question of Spielberg wanting to make Indy is good as it could be...It was about Lucas not wanting to piss of the fans.

I agree about a certain type of talkbacker. I don't make a habit of criticizing stuff for the sake of trying to strike a pose. In some ways, I'm trying to figure out why I'm NOT more excited about this. You know, when I first learned of this movie, I was pumped. Of course I love the original trilogy, but the more I've seen and the more I've thought about it... my enthusiasm's waned. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because every time I see Shia anywhere in the movie I shiver with disgust. Or maybe it's that none of the action scenes look that fresh, given the advances in special effects and the increased ambitions of action set-pieces in the two decades since 'Last Crusade.' It's just come to seem like things we've all seen before, and done better, when the actors were younger and didn't have to share the stage with so many side characters. I don't know what it is, really. I assure you I WANT to be excited, but the more they've shown, the less I am.

    by fassbinder79

My feeling is either way that the boards should in many respects be a way for fans/film buffs ect to let the studios know what there honest reactions are to the films they are putting out. If we're not honest about our opinions then they will keep putting out shit. That is not to say Indy will suck...It could wind up being a great film and I'll have to eat my words. But I strongly believe that it can be very helpful for the studios, filmmakers and people developing projects in the industry to know where the fans stand on these things. Movies nowadays are getting ridiculously expensive unfortunately while our soldiers in Iraq are dying without having the proper gear and armor. If a studio is going to spend some obscene amount of money (100 million dollars or more as is becoming common practice) then I want to see every fucking penny on screen!

I am such a rabid Indy fan (one with impressive willpower), that I'm not watching any of the trailers. I just want to sit down in the theatre, have the lights go down, and watch a new Indy film. I have no idea what the action is like. In broad terms, the reason I like Last Crusade the least (even though I still love it) is that it too often feels like an all out comedy. That's my biggest hope for this film, that its not a comedy. If its as good as Temple of Doom, I'll be happy. A friend of mine, who is just as Indy-obsessed as me, and feels the same way about the first three, emerged from this trailer very, very happy... so I'm crossing my fingers.

I saw all three of these movies in the theater when they came out and i will still break out one of them on dvd occasionaly. I understand everything Spielberg was trying to do here with the new installament but I know that underneath my anxiousness to see this there is a little reserve. The trailer is a bit flat and lacks a certain punch for some reason and I have a hard time seeing tweens or yung un's getting excited about this movie. At the same time I know it was made for the fans who were there. BUt I was there and I also having feelings of reserve about it. I'm hoping it rawks though.

My problems with Doom are: Capshaw, the "short run" character is pretty racist (maybe I'm being too politically correct about it - but it bothers me whenever I watch it), the background/matte shots really look like ass for most of the film and while this might seem more than a bit unfair I prefer Young Sherlock Holmes' take on a similiar plotline (I know Doom came first YSH was a response to that) I just liked the way things were handled better in that film. The best thing about Doom for me is the best thing about Superman 3 (I can't believe I am actually saying something good about that film but its true) is when Indy goes bad. That still rules. Its just a flawed film for me. Crusade gets pretty silly but there is a lot more that works for as far as the Indy lore in that film than what is in Doom. Love Phoenix's performance as the young Indiana for example. Connery was perfect casting for his dad and the scenes in Italy with the rats are pretty strong in my mind. I also think the grail stuff at the end is surprisingly effective. I'll tell you one thing that definitely won't suck about the new Indy...KAREN ALLEN. Thank god she is in the new one.

I enjoyed Minority Report. I wasn't sure about it at first but ended up liking it in the end. For me the most "fun" I've had watching a Spielberg flick was ...wait for it...the FIRST Jurasic Park. They all went to total shit after that. I appreciated War of the Worlds but didn't like it all and for me it never captured the awesome neivity of the original 50's one. So in the end I think he killed his movie casting the Scientoligist and over using the war chest of fx...not a good movie in the end (WW).

There are a few things that just make this not quite an Indy movie...Number one is how clean this movie feels. All of the green screen work is fine for a futuristic movie like Star Wars, but this is supposed to be based in reality, and using green screen for a lot of these action shots makes those shots look sterile. Also, what's up with the skull-faced zombie near the end of the trailer? Looks like a guy with a mask. Maybe it is. Maybe it's supposed to be. Who knows, but they should have left it out of the trailer. Didn't do anything to make it look like an old-school Indy adventure. I think those are the biggest things. I'm used to my Indy with more practical effects and less CGI.

Schindler's List is a masterpiece and to this day I still give SS credit where credit is due on that one for making both films in the same year which is quite an achievement.

    Temple of Doom just ROCKS

    by captain katanga

Spielberg was absolutely firing on all cylinders as a director with that film. Think about that shot with the kids in chains, then Indy appears out of the shadows in probably the most heroic shot of the trilogy, then you hear the punching sounds off camera and then that baddie's body sliding into frame. Brilliant. For all its flaws, wonderful film. I even love "chilled monkey brains".

Schindler's was good although I prefered The Pianist. Adrian Brody did a great job and I really like the movies perspective on the Holocaust. It fealt like a living documentary to me and I came away with even more compassion for those people. As far as the Mist I have not seen that yet.

Cuz Indy is awesome. And this looks pretty solid and I would hope that reviewers rewatch the original trilogy before reviewing so they don't sound like ass monkeys when they complain about things that fit with the series. Like when they focused on bad acting and dialogue in the Prequels they sucked for reasons beyond acting.

The Mist was one of my top three films of this past year:

    1. There Will Be Blood (perfection)

    2. Eastern Promises (one of Cronenberg's best)

    3. The Mist (got everything right that WOTW got wrong - in my opinion)

Dare I say it...I have still never seen The Pianist. Kind of embarrasing actually.

    L.A. Confidential and WOTW

    by captain katanga

L.A.Confidential is one of my favourite films of all time. WOTW had the potential for greatness but was missing a climax. They blew their load with the attack at the beginning of the film, which was amazing. Whether it was down to time constraints of budget constraints, they left nothing for the climax, and everyone felt very let down.

Doom kicks the shit out of Crusade

    by kwisatzhaderach

Whether you like Willie and Short Round or not, Doom is far superior filmmaking. Crusade is lazy filmmaking from Spielberg, who was on a downer after the failure of Empire of the Sun. Ford doesn't even seem like Jones in the film, he's just a stooge for Connery's lame schtick. The visual FX work is terrible (due to Dennis Muren not being involved) and the action sequences are lame - the desert tank sequence is a lazy rip-off of the perfectly mounted and edited truck chase from Raiders. Denholm Elliot's serious character from Raiders has been turned into a comedy sidekick, as has Sallah. Last crusade is a big drop off in quality from Ark and Doom, two films that were made when Spielberg was still hungry and ambitious. It will be interesting to see how Skull turns out.

The Last Crusade Arguably better than Temple

    by underoos hero

Temple was Temple. I remember loving the shit out of it. I was so so with Crusade when it came out. But ofcourse now that we're older, Crusade seems to be the one I reach for when I go back to watch any of these movies. SS and everyone involved on Indy had grown into their skin and it was more adult but never lost it's charm and excitement which was comparable to Raiders, but in a different way.

I grew up on Clint Eastwoods Spaghetti and I never thought anyone could achieve that level of cowboy perfection, but for fucks sake they hammered it home. If you "worked in the film industry" (one of the most overused lies on forums like this, so you'll excuse my cynicism at your claim) you'd know that $400 million worldwide is a stupid estimate (and Pirates 2 didn't make $300 million worldwide, it made over a billion). You'd also spin us insider knowledge that wasn't just regurgitated facts we all know from interviews and from watching the progress on this. Besides, Shamalyan didn't get to write a draft. Sorry, but if there's one thing I hate on these boards it's people throwing an "I work in the industry" into their posts to try and add weight to their opinions.

Indy is far more beloved around the world, and its a Spielberg blockbuster, ideal for all ages and demographics... why exactly don't you think its capable of making more than say I Am legend (584 million globally) or Troy (!) (500 million globally. Was it you that predicted 400 million globally? Thats what The Mummy and MI:3 made! Indy has way, way more global appeal.

I work in the industry too. I've had the fortunate experience to work with some of the people on the new Indy film. And what a "professional" WOULD SAY IS... "Wait for the movie to come out before you judge it". Cynicism is the bi-product of arrogance. I do believe that Fassbinder wants KOTCS to be good. Fassbinder... I agree with most of your points. I just hope you can go to Indy IV with an open mind and enjoy it for the amusement park ride it's meant to be. When you start bringing up comments about Short-Round being anti-PC... I have to shake my head and figure you can't enjoy movies these days without letting your own subjective & personal filters get in the way.

You claim Lucas made "us" cynical. Well... you really can't lump me in there cause I'm not cynical of Lucas. He didn't make me cynical. No one person can make someone else cynical. It's a human behavior that stems from the way people react to life in general.

I may have thought Lucas could have done a better job directing and writing the prequels... but it wasn't the end of the world for me. It was his movie. He did what he wanted to do. It's not yours or mine. I move on. I still enjoy all of the Star Wars movies for what they are. Movies. Escapism. Nothing more. Nothing less. And yes... I liked the original trilogy over the prequels. I'm not negative about the future. People cast judgement on something they've never even seen. That's being cynical. Assuming you already know what the outcome is and that you are a better critic then the general population. That's arrogance.

Interesting. It's weird, because it seems to be the exact opposite here. What is surprising me is that I've been observing what seems to be a lack of large-scale interest in Dark Knight here in The Big Apple. by jollysleeve

I know I'm pretty much the only person who feels this way, but whenever I see examples of HD programming or HD trailers (note, I don't actually have an HD set), it always seems so unbelievably artificial, sterile, unnatural and processed to me. Not necessarily "more detailed," just louder and more garish. Am I the only one who has negative feelings toward the initials "HD?" It just sort of feels like the death of this storytelling medium I've loved my whole life. I realize most people love anything associated with HD. Am I the only one who feels the opposite?

The problem with the Brando homage leo

    by industrykiller!

Is that comparing SHia Labeof, an actor people are akeptical, to Marlon brando, the greatest and arguably coolest screen actor of all time, is just compeltely and utterly ridiculous and only serves to exaggerate the fears that people have been having that he was miscast. If they wanted a Brando type they really could not have gone further in the other direction. Look Labeouf might be great in the role he plays, but it certainly won't be a Brando type character because frankly that's just out of his range.

I don't hate TEMPLE OF DOOM. I reserve my hate for LAST CRUSADE, which is lazy and sloppy and a betrayal of any affection I have for RAIDERS. TEMPLE is uneven, but at least it does its own thing and it's a pretty potent nightmare machine.

And Fassbinder, M. Night Shyamalan never wrote one word of an INDIANA JONES script. Ever. His ego wouldn't let him work on a film where he didn't have complete control. If you claim he wrote a draft of this, you're absolutely 100% wrong.

is only part of the problem with this movie. It's 15 years to late and Spielberg inexplicably cast an actor in a part so horribly wrong it boggles the mind. Unless Shia is playing a jewish retard that escaped from the special ed home his part is going to be annoyingly shitty. He's the one thing that has caused the crickets in the fucking theater when this shit runs. People DON'T want to see his stupid ass in this. He's a garbage douche bag actor that should be left for garbage douche bag movies like Transformers. Spielberg has gotten old along with Ford, but Stevie is out of touch with the rest of the world, he's failed to keep his finger on what's hot or not. You are certainly not the first person to repeat that Shyamalan story, but I am telling you as someone who has read pretty much every draft of INDIANA JONES 4 since the early '90s... there never was a Shyamalan draft.

The Darabont draft obviously exists, and much of it is still in the final CRYSTAL SKULL script, which is sort of a Frankenstein's monster of stuff by Lucas, Jeb Stuart, Darabont, and Koepp. Shit, man, Koepp's not a screenwriter... he's a mad scientist.

    Denver, CO - Audience Underwhelmed

    by rebeck2

If we're checking from all compass points, there was no reaction in my theatre either. Just a tangible sense of disappointment. I'm excited to see this movie, don't get me wrong - but that trailer was either representative of a very mediocre film or was cut literally to lower expectations. It was very bland and awkward. And why not more dialogue? Is that just Spielberg not wanting to give stuff away or do they think the more they show the less we'll like it? I don't get it. Still, I'll be there on the first day like most all of you. Oh and TEMPLE OF DOOM kicks ass - I saw it in my 20's, not as a child (yes, I'm old), and my girlfriend nearly killed me with the grip she had on me. It was a great roller coaster then, and it is now. To me, it is Spielberg at his best. CRUSADE is a crushing bore and an enormous letdown.

Because it's easily my biggest concern of the film. I know you're probably waiting to see but since you've read the script and you're obviously familiar with Labeouf give us your take on it. Shia hate

    by headjew

People actually groaned during the trailer? its funny but when you talk with "normal" people (not talkbackers, who are not the average film audience), they are way more measured about lebeauf. I'm not even talking about the people who work with him and can't stop raving about how amazingly talented he is. I don't know the reason for the hate but i think its just the overexposure of shia. I also hate to play the jealousy card but maybe some talkbacker can't accept that the kid just played the lead in transformer, banged rihana, and then went back to play opposite Ford in Indy 4...

    by rbatty024

I don't understand the hatred. It's far more tongue and cheek than the other two films but only by a couple of degrees. It's not wildly out of character as some make it out to be. I think Ford and Connery do a superb job playing each other for comedy. They really reminded me of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in a way (I'm certain that was part of Spielberg's inspiration for the film). It's Indiana Jones as a road comedy, which is pretty fucking ingenious if you ask me. I also love how Spielberg treats Connery's character in the same manner that he treats the shark in Jaws. We don't see him until halfway through the film. His entrance is pretty great too.

Over 200 million people viewed the first trailer online which is a record. This shows the level of worldwide interest in Indy still.

Indy will be a massive hit as it appeals to a lot of people who would not usually go to the cinema. Its easily going to make close to $1B worldwide even if its poor (which I very much doubt) $700-850m is a lock (look at Spiderman3 which was dire yet made more than SM1/2). First week alone will probably be $350-400m. worlwide

Is a lot of the so-called "HD" material shot for TV these days in fact a form of digital video? I ask because I know that drama shows that have traditionally been shot on film (such as Law & Order)... when I see new episodes of these shows on NBC these days--shows which are now touted to be shot in "hi-def" (again, watching on just my standard, low-tech CRT setup) they just look awful. I mean, nightmarishly artificial and cheap, like a Ringling Brothers acid trip. (Meanwhile, the film-shot commercials shown on the same network during these shows still look "normal.") I just can't imagine that such an alien look is the result of "traditional" filming practices. And furthermore, I wonder, assuming these shows are in fact being shot in digital--are people who say they prefer this type of hi-def programming actually saying they think that digital cinematography looks more natural and more beautiful than film? I'm not trying to pick a fight here with anyone. I honestly don't know much about this subject and want to learn at least some basic facts.

What it boils down to is this:

    by skipper

I think it would literally be impossible to make an Indiana Jones 4 without tons of people bashing it.

The passage of time has created a nostalgia for the 1st 3 films so that we overlook their faults.

If Indy 4 was filmed just like the first 3, people would say, "It's 2008; those special effects don't cut it anymore." And if Indy 4 used updated special effects, people would say, "Wah, I want it to be just like the old ones."

But that's sort of a relief, should make the movie that much better if my expectations aren't through the roof. Think that's what they were going for? Don't make us hyperventilate with excitement, so when we do see it we'll be pleasently surprised and they'll use more word of mouth to get newer younger people into the theatre? Just like the old days.

I wouldn't say that they're intentionally making the preview suck, but I do think they wanted to make sure not to give too much away. If they had been willing to give away more plot points, then perhaps the trailer would have been more pleasing to hyper-critical audiences.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that most TV programs have likely upgraded to digital probably in request or order of the network. However, watching it on a Standard Def TV will not show you the show in HD. You need to have subscribed to the HD version of those channels to get that.

Basically, yeah you'll probably see a difference now from the quality of the image from the 90s, but I wouldn't say it's worse. Digital is different than film, no doubt, but like any transition it is met with mixed responses, but eventually we'll all come to accept it.

The good news being that many filmmakers, Spielberg being one of them, don't want to abandon film because it captures light in such a unique way, but I wouldn't call it better than digital. Watch Collateral and see how beautiful digital can be.

    by burgerking

Yeah I agree with what you say, first off that Temple of Doom ROCKS. A close second to Raiders for me, it's beautifully made and I think the adventure is amazing, back when it was released I guess "darker" wasn't popular since Last Crusade went lighter in tone, but today, Temple would probably shine as "darker" is in these days. I love the annoying kid, and the ridiculously "racist" portrayal of the natives. And I'll never forget the beating heart chest ripping open scene.

I also liked Last Crusade the least, however, I did appreciate the humour, I hope that you, Katanga, and other talkbackers here (especially the cynics that Katanga mentioned) don't forget that Indy was always an adventure series that had charm and wit, and that jokes like "I thought that was closer" in the trailer are staple elements of the formula. I'm just afraid that once the movie hits, people are going to say "OMG IT WAS TOO SILLY, POS!" Apparently forgetting that all of the films were "silly" to a certain degree.

Also agree that there is a certain population of talkbackers here who are trying way, way too hard to be the next Roger Ebert constantly being hyper-critical of EVERYTHING whether it be a movie teaser poster, the make-up of a character, concept art, or the god damn voice-over of this trailer, some TBers feel the need to point out the most insignificant things. Being that uptight, I really do wonder how they can enjoy anything. Let alone have film be a main interest of theirs.

But now I'm really confused. For two reasons. #1 Honestly, the look of these shows (such as Medium, the new L&O Criminal Intent, The Biggest Loswer etc) is so cheap and garish to me that I have a hard time imagining anyone preferring it to things that look (quote/unquote) "normal." But where I'm also confused is #2: I was under the impression that "hi-def" basically means that you're watching something in 5-times the resolution of what we had before. Yet I've also read that film is so inherently detailed that even hi-def (whether it be broadcasts or Blu-Ray) can't completely convey every bit of potential nuance of the original film print. Assuming that is true, then I wonder, why is there any need at all to shoot things digitally for hi-def broadcasts? Why don't they continue to take full advantage of the natural and organic beauty of film and simply use the hi-def medium to better convey all those inherent aesthetic benefits to the consumer?

If WotW had been good I would have more hope

    by performingmonkey

Aside from a couple of great set pieces (when the first tripod emerges from the ground and the Hudson River scene) WotW was TERRIBLE. Compared with A.I. and Minority Report it doesn't even register, and those two movies are by no means masterpieces. A.I. and MR were too long, WotW was too short. The actual length of WotW was OK but it FELT too short. Once they get to Tim Robbins's house they should have stop shooting and just turned it into a TV episode or something! The whole movie is rushed beyond belief. It's as though Spielberg only showed up for a week and then the rest was shot by second unit with the blanks filled in by ILM (who admittedly did a stellar job with the time they had). Apart from the parts where people are being killed by the aliens, Spielberg seemed to forget that he'd already done everything in this movie ten times better in Close Encounters.

While I don't want to get too technical because I don't know that much, I believe it's just in the transfer to screen.

See, film, yeah, it can capture a lot, but thats just a film reel, you need something to project it. Projection like in a movie theatre losses quality because of the enlargement, same as the fact a projection TV isn't as sharp as an LCD. In home settings, you need something to be able to play your movie: VHSs, DVDs, Blurays. A transfer has to happen so HD is just a really good transfer, getting the least image compression, so the clearest picture, closest to the original print possible.

It is possible for film to be presented in HD, not just digital filming. Digital goes for a desired look, so it's more common to see in urban-set films/shows, which is why you'd see it in those crime dramas or Collateral (yeah I keep coming back to it). Also, the digital take-over is to encourage everyone to upgrade to LCD or Plasma screens and move up to HD receivers, leaving standard definition behind. Any doubts about how a show or movie looks will be gone when you upgrade to HD, it's beautiful.

Again, I'm not super knowledgable in it, so if anyone wants to prove me wrong, please do.

Less than they should be? So a trailer should show every action scene, every witty line from the movie? Yeah, that makes for a good trailer, and a huge disappointment when you see the movie.

I'm suggesting they are taking a different route with the marketing to give you glimpses but nothing that really blows your mind. Notice all the CGI scenes like that object flying towards the car Indy's in is shown for seconds, never getting to the big bang.

I just said it's a possibility, and if you look around, I'm not the only one who suggested it on this talkback. Get your head out of your ass. Not everyone likes to see a movie blow its load before it even hits theatres, but for you premature losers, I guess that does the trick.

is that they're not showing you the best parts of the film in the trailer. They're holding back. If you don't like the trailer maybe it's because unlike other trailers they're not showing you the entire movie. Personally, I like the approach, but I also like what I've seen so far. Audiences are familiar enough with Indiana Jones that they don't have to show you the entire movie in order to sell it.

Oh I totally hear you when it comes to the humour. As you say its a staple of the series, in fact no other series can claim to have so many classic visual jokes in it. Its just that for me, Last Crusade tips into all-out comedy, perhaps its the sheer volume of gags, some great (old guy putting hubcap on car, car drives off), some not so great ("they dont come any closer than that!"), some awful (the whole Scottish Lord sequence). I just hope they get the balance right in the new one. But you're right, the daft humour has always been there (Marion carrying a frying pan, lures baddie into doorway, BOIIINNG!!)

Temple and Crusade both have problems but I can not abide the character of Willie- a total waste of air as a character. What does Indy see in her? Temple as a movie is actually pretty racist, Short Round is kinda irritating, like the Ewoks in Jedi - adding an unnecessary and mismatched juvenile tone to a fairly dark tale and I gotta say Thuggee priest are not as good villains as good, old-fashioned Nazis. Raider, then Crusade and then Temple. I think a lot of Temple-love is pure nostalgia. But hey may be that's just me.

Reaction to Indy trailer vs TDK trailer

    by heks

I think some of you are misinterpreting the silence during the Indy trailer.
In our theater, the previews were unusually quiet for some reason. There were a few trailers before the Indy one came on and people we still carrying on conversations from before they started and while the commercials were playing. They laughed at a few jokes in the trailer and then went back to talking.
Then the scene of the waterfalls at the start of the Indy trailer came on and about half of the audience suddenly shut up (I figure these were the ones that saw the crappy bootleg beforehand). Then everybody else recognized Ford's voice in the voiceover and they all shut up too. You literally could have heard a pin drop (if the floors weren't carpeted).
It was impossible to mistake the silence for boredom. My wife leaned over to me and said, "Wow. It just got really quiet in here." It was an awed silence ... a reverential silence. Everybody dropped whatever else they were doing and shut up because they didn't want to miss one second of the trailer. At the end of the trailer when you hear the whipcrack and you see the Indy Silhouette walking out with gold backlighting and the title comes up you could suddenly hear a bunch of hushed laughs ... but not in the way you'd laugh at something that was stupid. It was closer to a gleeful little giggle of "yeaahhhhh". You could tell that there were a lot of people in the audience that had been waiting for this movie for a long time.
A few seconds after the next trailer everybody went back to talking. When the Dark Knight trailer came on people were still talking. Not as much as the other trailers, but it wasn't the awed reverence that was so palpable during the Indy trailer. Did the Dark Knight trailer get some OOOHs and AHHHs? Sure. But the difference between the (3) Dark Knight trailers and the Indy trailer is that TDK has tippped it's hand over and over again. The Dark Knight trailer is getting the oohs and ahhhs because it shows the stuff in the movie that's meant to elicit them ... and it seems they're shown in a fairly linear order so that you feel like you're basically watch a 2-minute version of the movie.
The Indy trailer isn't set up that way and I'm pretty damn sure that's intentional. The Indy trailer sets a tone. It says, "This is Indiana Jones. He's back. You wanna see what he's gonna do? Well then you'll have to come see the movie." It does this with very brief snippets of the movie that seem arranged in no particular order and you can't tell if the trailer unfolds even remotely in the same sequence as the movie.
Conversely, the Dark Knight trailer says, "This happens to this character, then this happens to this character, then this happens to this character. There's this conflict and this other conflict. And Batman's gonna kick some ass."
Now don't get me wrong. It's a cool trailer because it seems like it's gonna be a cool movie. But the intent and style of the trailer is very different from the Indy one. I feel like I basically know what's going to happen and how it's going to happen. It's what I hate about most modern trailers. It's what I hated about the Die Hard 4 trailer. It shows you the pinnacle of virtually every set piece in the movie. So when you actually show up the theater, you're just watching the build-up to everything you saw in the trailer. I don't feel that way with Indy, and that's why I love it so much.

    Ford's "physical acting"

    by heks

I can't remember if it was on here or some other board, but somebody was whining about the scene in the trailer where Indy jumps from one truck to the other, saying that he was pissed off that you could clearly tell it was a stunt man rather than Ford.
Well, that guy must have better eyes than me. I transferred the HD trailer to my laptop, hooked it up to my projector on a 106" screen and moved through that bit of the trailer frame by frame. And you know what? I could swear that Ford actually did that jump. He may have had a wire attached or something (though I couldn't tell that at all), but you can see his face through most of the jump and landing when he knocks one of the bad guys out of the truck he lands in and there's no cuts, and it sure as hell looks like Ford's face AND body. There's one frame in particular where you can clearly see it's Ford's face.
I really don't know what the hell that guy was talking about.

But this just...doesn't look right. What happened to the look of film??? Why does Ford look like CGI or something in the action shots? What is with the look of this film? So busy but so little going on...I'll hold out and of course see it...but something just isn't right with this flick...as a bookend, it just looks aesthetically entirely different and weird compared to all of them. No film grain...meh.

The horse-to-truck jump(along with the under the truck and pulled behind stunt) were performed by the master stuntman Terry Leonard. However, your point is well taken, as the editing of Raiders by Michael Kahn is so seamless you'd be hard pressed to know it. And Ford did do a shitload of the stunts in the film himself.

Batman beats the bad guy, mopes a lot and does deep, philosophical voiceovers.

STFU already. This isn't a dick measuring contest between TDK and KotCS.

Step back from the bashing for a minute and realize you're watching the trailer for the 4th Indiana Jones movie. Fuck, people!

Am I reading you wrong or was that an attempt at sarcasm. My point was not how important it is or isn't that it is really is Ford making the jump. My point was that if it's a stuntman, it isn't obvious, which is what some people have suggested. In other words, people who are whining that the stunts are more obviously a stuntman than in previous movies and that it takes you out of the world of the movie are whining about nothing.

    Hey,
Yeah, I'm aware that Terry Leonard did the jump from horse to truck and under the truck stunt - though Harrison Ford did actually do part of the pulled behind the truck bit.
My point, as I said to huggerorange, is really just that the use of a stuntman in this film doesn't seem any more obvious than any of the previous films. If anything, it seems like it may be even more seamless ... if that's possible. I just really don't get the complaints. I've watched the teaser, tv spots and trailer on my projector in HD and I can't tell in the least if it's a stuntman rather than Ford. In fact, at that size and resolution it certainly looks to me like it really is Ford in all the action sequences in the trailers.

Temple of Doom is and always will be the best

    by supermans

Temple of Doom is and always will be the best.. Raiders comes second and Last Crusade dead last. There was a sense of real danger that I felt for the characters while watching Doom.. The scene where Indy and Short-round were trapped in the cave with the spike wall shrinking on them is a classic. Willy being dropped into the pit of death is another. The movie was amazing and as a kid, it was my favorite movie of all time. On Beta-max, I watched Temple of Doom over and over...

The Last Crusade was simply cheesy.. There was no sense of danger, even in the end when he was going thru the traps. Raiders of the Lost Ark was much more entertaining than Last Crusade and I do hope this Crystal Skull movie isn't worse than Last Crusade.. Shia Lebouf as Indy's son is a nice touch and bringing Marion back is also a good idea for nostalgia. It would be cool if Short-Round and Willy make a guest appearance somewhere in the film as well.. Also, I do hope the whole ALien theme doesn't go overboard cheesy on this one and E.T. show's up in the end or all the characters are crying because the aliens have to leave..

I had the pleasure of meeting Terry Leonard a while ago(a friend was part of the car crew on Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift). The guy looks like he's been through three wars, and could still kick the shit out of anyone half his age. And a real gentleman, too.

Understanding why Last Crusade sucked part 1

    by hopewell1

The aforementioned tank scene by K229:

The tank scene is as sloppy a scene as you'll find in Last Crusade from a story perspective. It pretty much falls apart the instant Indy falls off the tank. Tied up by his own sidebag, Indy doesn't save himself with ingenuity like the truck chase in Raiders. He basically stares in fear at an incoming cliff wall until by luck, a ricochet kills the driver and by chance causes him to avoid being crushed. Then using a clever assist from Spielberg's editing, escapes the clutches of his sidebag so he can knock out the Nazi with the shovel and give Connery the opportunity to provide the climactic, completely out of context pun "You call this archaeology?" Laughter ensues, and then the situation is resolved with a cliffhanger (literally) which is irrelevant to the main story. The truck scene is Raiders ended with Indy in possession of the ark. The tank scene in Crusade ends with a chance for Connery to lament the loss of his son which he backpedals on anyways. Then the plot picks up again.

    by zacdilone

Change a few words and names and you could write up a similar review of the marketplace scene in "Raiders." All the pseudo-cinematic analysis in the world can't undo the fact that the scene is ENTERTAINING. And I would argue that Connery's grief when he thinks he's lost Indy is a real turning point, and his "backpedaling" is nothing of the sort. It's typical male masking, and it works. The end result of the scene is that Henry and Brody are rescued and free to continue the adventure. What other rescue scenes in film history are you going to write off as irrelevant?

until the news of a new indy was made, i'd never once heard or read about anyone disliking crusade and now suddenly so many people claim to have never liked it. sorta reminds me of when the star wars special editions came out, before that you heard nothing but geeky praise for the originals, jedi included. but then once these special editions came, all these people suddenly said how they always hated or least liked jedi the least for whatever reason. its fun watching lemmings.

I gave your post some thought and agree that at least the scene IS entertaining. My gripe with that scene is that the truck scene made me believe Indy was a resourceful badass. I remember that too. In Clerks, Dante says he prefers Empire to which Randall responds "blasphemy" and that was accurate of the time. I remember everyone loving the action packed ending of Jedi to the downer cliffhanger of Empire. Then suddenly it was all Ewok hatred and Jedi jumped the shark etc etc. I remember when Jedi was out, we all loved the Ewoks, bought all the figures and dressed as them for Halloween. That said, my hatred of Last Crusade grew slowly over the years but even in the theater, i remember being in 8th grade and feeling weird about Indy surviving by luck as opposed to ingenuity.

    by heks

While I agree that Indy was lucky when the tank veered back out into the open, sometimes people DO get lucky. I didn't find it took away from his badass resourcefulness in the rest of the scene. How about when he leads the tank into a blind turn to collide with one of the Nazi cars? How about when he picks up that rock and sticks it in the gun and then makes himself an easy target to that gun so it will backfire and explode? How about the coolness of him riding his horse up onto the ledge and then jumping from it onto the moving tank and then giving Vogel that "I'm gonna kill ya" look?
I LOVE the truck scene in Raiders, and the under the truck bit is awesome, but I don't really find it to be more resourceful or badass than the stuff he does in the LC tank scene. And most of the rest of the Raiders truck scene is just fights in the cab that, as good as it is, I don't find is any better than the multiple LC fights on the tank.
Yes, the magically unsticking bag thing is a bit annoying, but I think you're selling the totality of the scene short by a long shot.
    Take care

    Idiot=analyzing audience reaction to trailers

    by antoniusbloc

You all can't be serious. Here's a fact: a good trailer does not necessarily translate into a good film; a bad trailer doesn't mean the film is going to be bad, etc. also, if you're so busy studying audience reaction, you're not paying very close attention to the actual trailer. Clapping, and woo-hooing is meaningless because most of these geeks have pre-meditated it to show off their geekiness, and that they are geekier than all the other geeks who are clapping and screaming while looking around for reaction and listening to how quiet the audience is, and didn't even see half the trailer. Lucas is the ultimate geek, and the geek religion is nostalgia. Lucas should learn from the major theme of the new Narnia film: you can't go back. Time to move on to better things. This Indy film was a bad idea, much like the Star Wars prequels. The Last Crusade was the perfect last film, and now will be tainted by this crap.

Reading the Tea Leaves of a Trailer

    by dreamfasting

In a way I wish I hadn't seen this trailer ... I'm already hyped enough. This is the sort of trailer that worries me a little when I watch it, that nagging fear that I'm foreseeing the movie through a tinted filter of marketing well polished to push my buttons. I loved Raiders beginning to end, enjoyed ToD as a plain thrill ride although it had some problems, but think LC would have been a near-total disaster had it not been for the Ford-Connery chemistry. So what worries me is that the editing of this trailer evokes a lot of memories of Raiders but if I stop and listen to the cheesy lines, it uncomfortably reminds me of LC.

Quotes from GL/SS interview in 5/2 issue of EW

    by rocco curioso

Lucas: "We don't need the money. We're only going to get aggravation. The fans think it's gonna be the Second Coming. And it's not the Second Coming. They've already written the story [in their heads], and lemme tell ya, it's not that story. So they're going to be very disappointed. I went through this with Phantom Menace. Believe me, I've been there, I've done it, I know exactly the way they react. And they're very vocal about these things. We're not gonna have adoring fans sending us e-mails saying how much they loved the movie. We're gonna have a bunch of angry people saying, 'You're a bunch of assholes, you should never have done this. You've ruined my life forever. I loved Indiana Jones so much and now it's ruined.' And all that kind of stuff."Then Spielberg, bless his little heart, chimes in with some immediate damage control:"Uh, he needs to speak for himself here.[Laughter all around] You need to put in parentheses 'George Lucas is totally speaking for himself.' And I absolve myself of any connection with that last statement about fans not liking it."Is it just me, or does it sound like the respective confidence levels of these two are just a liiitle bit shaky?

Sounds to me like Lucus is still smarting from the combination of negative and underwhelmed responses he received when he laid the first turd of the new SW trilogy. And the sighs, shrugs, and resignation with which fans met the following two abominations. It's amazing to me that he still hasn't figured out why those films failed so miserably on every level that actually counts. The man gave us Citizen Kane remade as an 80s-style sitcom starring Emmanuel Lewis, and can't figure out why people were hating on him. That's pretty much a sure sign that he should never, ever have creative control over anything ever again.

Spielberg, on the other hand, doesn't sound as though he has that same confidence problem--he just sounds as though he's interested in distancing himself from the bitter bundle of talentless neuroses that defines Lucas these days. Spielberg's recent films haven't been unqualified triumphs, but they certainly haven't been turkeys either. I'm hopeful for this project because of his involvement. It's what Lucas SHOULD have had when he was making SW I, II, and III--someone who actually had the power and balls and authority to say, "No, George, that's a stupid, stupid idea and this dialog is really, really bad, there's no way this is going to happen without some significant modification. And I will scuttle this whole thing if you insist on using Jake Lloyd because the kid's acting sucks enough to ruing the movie all by itself."

"Citizen Kane remade as an 80s-style sitcom starring Emmanuel Lewis"... LMFAO! That, my good man, is a classic 90 degrees-counter-to-generic-observations, WAY outside the box piece of insight. Well written, sir.Yeah, Lucas totally misjudged the rising power of fan discontent via the Internet coinciding with the SW Prequels. True, he did scale back the abomination known as "Jar Jar" in the last two prequels to appease us, but other than that he stood firm... and made himself look like the "asshole" he aforementioned. To admit that a fanbase of MILLIONS (people, not $) perhaps better understood what made the Star Wars movies great--- all those little parts adding up to a sum much greater than their whole--- would have been an irreparable loss of face. You're right... Spielberg knows better. He never took a two-decade hiatus from directing as Lucas did. But, just from seeing the trailer in front of "Iron Man"... I fear the magic is gone. I saw "Raiders" in the theatre during its initial release, and it was flat-out astonishing. Saw the next two IJ movies as well--- both servicable sequels, if not exactly jaw-dropping. But, with that template firmly in place... "Crystal Skull" can only be measured against the preceding three. Viewing it as a stand-alone movie isn't even an option. I fear it will fall flat, or damn near. You're dead right about Lucas and his poisoning of the Prequels. A first-grader busy with fingerpainting has better creative instincts that he did. He partially redeemed himself with ROTS, but even THAT was a tad bit cartoonish, when it should have played out like a Greek tragedy.

I thought both the TDK and Indy trailers were steps backward

    by interficium

Both had really weak endings: TDK: Dent's cornball line about living to see yourself become a villain, then a... montage of Lamborghini jump-cut shots? Indy: Terrible sequence with Indy in the car with the rocket launcher that just totally fell flat. Too much Shia, etc.Though I really liked the "here's my card" line in TDK's trailer, the rest of Joker's dialogue kind of threw me, seemed a little too... sane-sounding? We'll see.

    by rbatty024

On one level I can't blame Lucas for being so cynical. Granted the prequels sucked, but instead of just critiquing them as bad movies people went absolutely hysterical. The whole "Lucas raped my childhood" thing was ridiculous and fed into the worst stereotypes of geeks. They sucked so feel free to make fun of them or pick them apart but don't act like those films ruined your life. Lucas should really just stay away from message boards.

    by prossor

when he sticks to no-nonsense raw action like duel or jaws, he does it well like so many other action directors. but when he tries to "grow" as a filmmaker by attempting serious things trying to be with the big boys like coppola, scorsese, it comes off amateurish, sappy, workmanstyle. He's been going down the shitter when he attempted Close Encounters.

    by bendersshinyass

I saw it first time before iron man and it is the first film in the longest time that actually felt like... well, an indiana jones type film. That angle track shot of the truck and then the russians coming into fram along side and firing their guns.... thats fucking classic speilberg. the man still has it, and while i noted a lot of lucas style visual effects, you gotte remind yourself, it was these films that created and gave credence to such effects. I don't care what anyone else thinks, I think this looks gret, and im still in the dark on the actual story and plot and thats awesome! side note, watch the trailer for last crusade and between that and the finished film i think we can get a fair idea of just how dense and complex this new film will actually be. can't wait. Dark knight will not beat it.

    Lucas's comments = hype control

    by sapno_krei

I don't think SS and GL's comments indicate a lack of confidence in their movie. I think they realize that even the slightest hint of self-praise or overconfidence in their film will result in backlash. So, they are biting their lips and trying to keep the hype machine cranked down. I don't blame them -- under-promising and over-delivering are always the best way to go about one's work.

    Cynicism...

    by jones1899

I'd say the worst thing the internet has spawned is the pathetic group of pessimists and cynics. There's a new Indiana Jones coming out in just a few weeks and people are more concerned with the type of laugh the trailer got or if the theater was too quiet or if the film looks old enough or if its as good as The Dark Knight or whatever other pointless and meaningless discussion they feel like starting just to hear themselves type and feel badass for going against the grain. People laughed at the trailer? Good. THese are comedic films (yes, Raiders too). Theater too quiet? I am an Indy fanatic and didn't feel the need to scream or cheer outloud like some school girl. Film doesn't look old enough, jesus, it isn't. As good as TDK? Who cares. Can't wait to see either. I happen to be an Indy fan so I'm looking forward to it more. Youa re a Batman fan? Congrats on having a new film - it looks good - great. All I know is a new Indy movie is coming out and if its at least as enjoyable as the others, then I am happy. Do I give a flining shit if its number 1? Nope. Some of you need to go outside, go for a hike or to the park or play some ball. Get away from your computers. Do yourself and others a favor because you are just ruining it for yourselves.

    by proman1984

There are more interesting visual ideas in Minority Report than in hise entire filmography. And let's just say that Scorsese never fully mastered camera movements and his angles are jarring and overrated.

Still, Martin is a pretty terrific filmmaker (while he may not be a terrific director).

BendersShinyAss/My thoughts on what may happen

    by strosmer

In total agreement with your thoughts on the trailer. That tracking shot was spectacular, classic Spielberg, and I love how little of the plot is revealed. Why should they reveal more? It's a new Indy movie; people are going to be there. SS and GL know what they're doing.I just watched Raiders again this past Friday, and I tell ya what, if I'm right in my speculation, the Crystal Skull aims to wrap up the mysteries of the Ark. It won't be a stand-alone story. I believe the idea behind Skull is "everything happens for a reason." Indy doesn't believe in superstitious nonsense or a lot of hocus pocus. There's a reason for the powers of the Ark and it’s scientific in nature - not mystical. That's what Lucas meant when he said Indy 4 will be similar to Phantom Menace. As with the Force and midichlorians, it will be revealed that there is a scientific explanation for these mystical happenings. Looks like aliens are responsible for all of these ancient artifacts and early great civilizations. Lucas has been toying with that premise for a long time, and though it will likely piss a lot of people off, I think it means we're in store for another great cinematic treat.Watch Raiders and look for all the possible tie-ins to the new film; I guarantee your juices will get flowing for Crystal Skull. Pay special attention to the scene where the FBI agents discuss the Ark with Indy and Brody at the university, the staff of Ra and the model of Tanis on the floor, Bellock's explanation of what the Ark is, and of course Marian!I doubt we'll see Raiders ever top itself. It's that rare successful blend of drama, action, and comedy. But I’ve no doubt Crystal Skull will be grander in scale than any of the previous three films, and full of surprises. Did anyone notice John Hurt in the trailer? Yet more great casting!

An "Indy vs TDK" discourse is fine, but...

    by finky089

...what I dont get is when people passionately insist that one film will "beat" another. "Indy IV will kill TDK!" Um, okay, fine. Maybe it will and maybe it won't, but 1) high box office grosss does not automatically = "good movie" and 2)they aren't really in competition with each other from a moviefan perspective. Yes, they are products of competing studios who arguably want as much box office share for their tentpoles this summer as possible. But 1) they are being released almost 2 months apart, which is practically in different seasons these days (how many films are still playing in more than 1,000 theaters these days after 8 weeks from opening?) And 2) as a consumer who's only stake int he movie is really enjoying it enough to substantiate paying to see it in the theater, what does box office gross have to do with it? It's not like the yanks vs red Sox where they are in direct competition and only one can lose when they play each other. But, it's one of those arguments that makes AICN, "AICN".

My theory on TDK's earning potential

    by thelastcleric

Even with a new Indy flick coming out, TDK is by far my most anticipated summer film and the newest trailer was pretty godamn amazing. However, the film also looks incredibly adult and I can't imagine that it will be viewed as a family film once word of mouth hits. It honestly looks like an R rated film slightly trimmed and given how borderline BB was I think TDK will be pretty offensive to some parents looking for a goofy, campy time at the movies. Personally, I hope it does very well but the look of the Joker alone makes it look like something no child should see.

    huge spoilers.......
    22.
again outmanuvering his enemies, indy nearly brings the warehouse downas the russians make off with their stolen prize. in the midst of a great chase, jones catches a glimples of the ark of the covenant (an earlier aquition of his stored in this secret place,) before finding himself on the hood of colonel dovchenko's jeep. it's a wild ride to a railroad flatcar, which has jet engines crudely bolted onto it's deck.

    23.
even as a jeep of russian soldiers draws nearer to them, indy grapples with dovchenko on the railway flatcar. suddenly the car's jet engines roar to life, sending a blast of rippling white fire erupting out of the back of the rocket sled. this devastating blast incinerates the oncoming russians. blowing up their jeep in the process.
