"Who'" looks at TARZAN

Published at:  May 26, 1999 3:05:07 AM CDT

Hey there, Harry here. I saw an early incomplete version of TARZAN a loooooooong time ago, though I've heard from Moriarty that next to nothing has been changed. And I really loved this film. If only they hadn't done the Rosie or Tantor thing, I'd been blissfully orgasmically glad. But instead I'm merely elated. Here's the "Who?" with his look at the film...

After being annoyed by the PHANTOM MENACE nightmare, it was
great to see a film like TARZAN that will definitely be one
of the summer's biggest hits.

It also made me feel at ease that unlike some other menacing film,
this one stays true to what you would expect after seeing the trailer.

The atmosphere and dark tone of the story was more along the lines of
Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Lion King with
the feeling of "What's wrong with a little blood shed?!"

Another treat is that besides the Phil Collins tune (which
aren't bad) there's only about... two typical Disney singing
doodads BUT the second one was more of a laugh along as the
gorillas did a typical gorilla thing.

The animation was top of the line especially during the
chase sequences- SPOT THAT USUAL DISNEY LOW KEY CHARACTER
CAMEO (riddle-like clue: think Hunchback but don't think too
hard)... besides it's right there in your face!

There are great moments and a beautiful relationship between
TARZAN and his primate mommy.

TARZAN is only slow for a moment and that's only because I was
recouping from the action rushes. It's a really fun film and
probably one of the best films I've seen lately. I'll definitely
take the lady friend to go see it again.

Before the film there's trailers for INSPECTOR GADGET which
looks pretty darn silly but really fun and a short teaser for
TOY STORY 2 that most people will add on to their movie reminder
list.

Anyway, enough yadda. Just see it when comes out on June 18th...
that is unless you're ready for the Eric Cartman epic. Need I
say more?

Take care,

Who?

    RE: The voices in TARZAN

    by w. leach

Tony Goldwyn (GHOST) is the voice of Tarzan. Minnie Driver is the voice of Jane. Rosie O'Donnell is Tarzan's ape friend, and I think Nigel Hawthorne provides his voice too.

This is just his opinion, and he didn't like Phantom Menace. I don't think I'll agree with this one. I didn't think anyone could possibly forgive or tolerate that dumb N'Sync/Rosie song.

    Phantom Menace?

    by xipetotec

Now what the hell is the big problem with The Phantom Menace?! I do believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to go as far as to say that it was this huge misleading dissapointment!? Give me a break! I've seen the movie with a bunch of people. All Star Wars fans in the first place ( not to mention my wife who is very critical of movie in general ) and all of us loved the movie! There was also nothing misleading about the trailers, I don't know where exactly it is that you get this idea or what it is exactly that YOU saw in the trailers that nobody else saw, but it seems to me that what the trailers showed, was pretty much what the movie showed...

Pixar has raised the bar for animation

    by spike lee

I usually have no interest in animated films, but I rented A Bug's Life and was blown away. The animation is perfect, and the script works on a kid and adult level. I think this is what Disney is trying to accomplish with their animated films. Pick a familiar novel or story for the adults, plus have an adult contemporary artist sing the musical numbers, and for the kids have a crazy character that can sell toys and t-shirts. Bugs Life was original, and maybe Disney should look in another direction using everyday settings and situation. How about setting a film in Harlem, with interesting characters and musical numbers?

This guy sounds like an idiot to me. Menace had it's problems, but I would not classify it as a disappointment. Star Wars is like sex...even when it is bad, it is still pretty good. I, for one, am TERRIFIED of this movie because of the big Rosie O'Donnel ape which "the who" didn't even mention. And the "Eric Cartman epic????" PUHLEEZE!!!!!

    by porky

That second teaser trailer for The Phantom Menace was a work of art. With the Darth Vader music and the cool cutting - it was nothing like the movie. I love that trailer and it really was very misleading, seeing how the movie turned out. I didn't hate TPM, but the people who put together that trailer should be signed up to do the next Star Wars movie. C'mon guys, you gotta admit that trailer had something the movie failed to deliver.

    TPM Trailer & Tarzan

    by pdaddy

Yeah, I really enjoyed TPM, but the trailers and commercials WERE a little misleading. Think about it: W/ the Schmi (sp?) commercial (One Love), I almost got all welled up and got the chills all over. The scene in the movie really didn't do that much for me. Darth Maul's commercial also gave me the chills - he was evil to the core. But in the movie, he certainly looked evil (kudos to Ray Park), but he actually talked MORE in the commercial than in the movie itself. My last example: "A communications disruption can mean only one thing......invasion". In the trailer, this line was AWESOME. It gave a sense of impending doom, that the people on Naboo didn't know what was quite going on, but that they would be in trouble soon. However, in the movie, the scene plays out like this: The COMICAL Nemoudians : "We must disrupt their communications (or something like that)." Cut to the Naboo chamber and Palpatine fading out. Sio Bibble: "A communications disruption...." The line had no "ooomph" to it at all. We had JUST been told by the Nemoudians what was going on, why did we have to be TOLD again. Maybe all of the expostition at the beginning was necessary for the kids who've never heard of Star Wars before, but to me, it just bogged the opening sequence down "Uhhh..They're still getting through!!!!!" (Really, George???? We can SEE THAT!!!! Show us, don't tell us!!!!!) Anyway, the Tarzan trailer looked awesome to me. I really dug Tarzan's design.....but I am extremely concerned over the Rosie issue. Rosie could EASILY ruin this movie for me - she really is that annoying. Hopefully, I'm wrong, but we'll see I guess....

    by essemtee

...I don't think! Heck, I could've written that, and all I've seen are the previews before Mulan and A Bug's Life! Personally, I can't wait to check this one out. The Deep Canvas tree effects are gonna look amazing on the big screen, and hopefully the requisite 'romance' part won't make the kiddies squirm in their seats too much, that's where the Terk/Rosie character and 'Trashing The Camp' comes in. Will the finished product rock? Dunno yet. Will it make make a pile of money? Sure. Is that pretty much all Disney's concerned about with this puppy? You bet!

You guys. You "we-have-to-be-geek-like-always" guys. I'm so sick of hearing everyone mention Rosie O'Donnell's name and "awful," "horrible," and "terrible" mentioned in the same sentance Tarzen. Just about everyone of you has seen zero of the work Rosie did for this freaking movie. A few people didn't like her, and they were deemed cool and indaknow, so it grew, but people don't always agree, so don't pre-judge or become biased. I'm not really talking to people like say, PDaddy, since he says she *might*, but I think even he is a little overeacting. Honest-to-god, Rosie is not that bad, besides the automatic personality clash she has with most of you card-carrying geeks who must proclaim Kurick is God, Spielberg is awesome, Old Classics always rock better, Tarantino and Smith are kings, Bound was really really cool, all those cancelled dramatic/sci-fi shows should be on the air, Cameron does really cool movies, Austin Powers is hilarious, Milos Foreman and Oliver Stone kick ass,Lynch and Cronenberg are great, hollywood and especially Warner Brothers suck, ID4 was crappie, indies are wonderful and everything else people like is either overrated or sucks.

why Disney sucks and "Phantom Menace" didnt

    by mckracken

Hey look you losers, heeping praise on the mother of ALL evils DISNEY wont get you anywhere. Kissing the ass of the evil one will only serve to boost their already inflated ego. DISNEY SUCKS! Did anyone else here that? Sure Tarzan might be a good flick, I'm not debating that. THE company SUCKS...Disney SUCKS!!! And why now after 15 years is everyone STILL down on Phantom Menace after its initial release? Why? Because George Lucas didnt let you whiney bastards Direct STAR WARS yourself? Because you didnt get what you wanted? Because it wasnt what you thought it was going to be? Oh be still my beating heart..you whiney bastards make me sick! So go heap tons of Praise on Disney and their animated moron fests (which are all STOLEN IDEAS!!!), I'm sure you'll love them after you bitch and whine and complain theres no creative ideas left in Hollywood....Heap Praise on Tarzan, its the most original movie idea Disney has ever had! Edgar Rice Burroughs is probably turning in his GRAVE right now!!! His classic story butchered by a bunch of mindless geeky suits (your type of folks...not Mine) Oh gee I cannot WAIT to hear Rosie O`Donnell sing as a gorilla...JOY!

The King of Animation meets the King of the Apes

    by mr_ripley

I think the previews look great. I think Rosie O'Donnell is a miscalculation, to say the least. I think that Disney has bastardized a great novel (racist though it may be, it is still a wonderful legend). MOSTLY, though, I have great faith in Glen Keane. The man is a god on character animation! I may be alone in my love of "Pocahantas", but no one can dispute that it had that best character animation ever put on film. I heard someone on this site lauding "The Price of Egypt" for making those characters appear to breathe. Ah, that's nothing. Glen Keane can make his characters appear to THINK and FEEL. He breathes life into his drawings. He is a master, and regardless of Disney's bottom line, "Tarzan" promises an amazingly artful experience. The scene where Tarzan removes Jane's glove and her hand springs open like a flower is pure poetry. I love Disney product because beneath the abject commercialism, which frankly doesn't bother me, there is an honest sentimentality that works on me. "Tarzan" may not be an accurate telling of the Burrough's legend, but Glen Keane will surely give the King of the Apes his due.

    About the TARZAN responses

    by reellife

Hello. First I would like to tell everyone thanks for the responses.

I'm glad that some of you pointed out that it's just my opinion and that's exactly right and hopefully
critics get the point too that their opinion is only ONE opinion even though they have a microphone and we don't.

Now for the one of you asked what I was expecting from the PHANTOM MENACE that I didn't get from the trailers, what I was hoping to get was something more from what I saw in the 30 second spots.

You know the bits about Darth Maul talking about fear (which may be actually longer than all of his lines in the whole movie) Anakin's
mother saying farewell, etc. I hoping to see more depth in the characters like it was hinted to from the commercial spots.

I believe a lot of people feel the
same from the sudden drop in the grosses but I think things will be much better in the next two.

    Also, sorry about not giving
too much technical talk but even filmmakers like to keep film yap short at times.

Best of luck to you all.

And I'll ask my friends how Star Wars par with sex. :)

    TPM and Tarzan are cartoons

    by roid_droid

TPM was disappointing in many levels, but it was especially apparent that it is a cartoon. The many CG characters appear more unreal than real. It can be said that the CG are better, but better than what? Not real life. If they speak normal English, it would be better too.
Lately, there has been a bunch of average cartoons out there like Bug's Life and Prince of Egypt. Let's hope Tarzan is "worth the wait."

    AVERAGE?

    by calmante

A Bug's Life and Prince of Egypt are average? Your opinion has now been discounted...

I think that TPM's CGI sequences are amazing. Especially the pod race. I suspect that the people who are dogging on the CGI "unrealness" are just too used to puppets and have never developed an imagination as to how IMAGINARY animals might move and behave. Boss Nass, for example, moves like he weighs exactly what he looks to weigh. I also suspect that many of the posters who bitch about CGI can't even tell CG from actual life shots anymore...

Disney's TARZAN and STAR WARS's unbalanced use of GOOD CGI.

    by mckracken

let me restate that I do like Disney Movies (and I AM waiting for Tarzan) but I'm bitterly apposed to the evil Disney empire. They still suck (but they produce good movies!!) now about StarWars:TPH's CGI. I CAN tell CGI from real life, I'm a modeler myself. I've got no problem with the CGI effects in Phantom Menace looking real or not looking real. I just think they were **WAY** overused (thus turning it into...yes...a cartoon). You notice what was missing from Phantom Menace was all the NON generated effects such as the AT-AT's from Empire and people in costumes like that fat pig-like green thing that greets R2D2 and C3PO in Return of the JEDI in Jabba's palace. Whats missing is LACK of balancing out different types of special effects. With the exception of Yoda, I dont think George used puppets at all (I could be wrong) There were some creatures on Tatooine that wern't CGI but for the most part, every creature was rendered. I think in the next movie they need to concentrate on the special effects (and characters) they film LIVE as well as the effects that are added in after and avoid such an unbalanced use of good CGI. Bring back make-up effects and mechanical effects (50%) in conjunction with quality CGI (50%)
and I think the effects would be more balanced out. -McK

    Ban CGI characters

    by sicuv uyall

Someone up there got it right when they said that The Phantom Menace was a cartoon. There were entire scenes that had only CGI characters... lets call them toons... and I just couldn't buy it. In the old Star Wars movies, the aliens were people wearing costumes, but at least they were real. At least I could convince myself that the human characters were actually talking to them and not an empty space. The struggle in Phantom Menace was that I wanted to believe that the toons were there, but it didn't work. At least with Tarzan and any other Disney flick, you know you're going to be watching an animated movie. As for Lucas, he needs to realize that CGI only works with dinosaurs and the Matrix.... that's it. End of Story. I'm right. And I'm still Sicuv Uyall.

PS- A note to CALMANTE, CGI enthusiast

    by sicuv uyall

I thought CGI was supposed to free us from using our imagination. Isn't CGI supposed to help us suspend our disbelief even more so than regular special effects, Calmante? Well, in this movie, it didn't. And if I couldn't tell the difference between CGI and real life shots anymore, I wouldn't be complaining. Can you say "CARTOON?" Stick that up your hard drive, Computer boy.

Two Movies...yet one has to be the best!

    by prince of movies

Of corse there has been a lot of hype about some crappy movie that people get off work, spend weeks at a time in Los Angles waiting for tickets to a movie that all it wants to do is make money. Of course MAYBE SW1 is better than TARZAN but how do WE know this? Yet, the master of the force is going head to head with the master of animation...DISNEY!! Yet there maybe 2000 special effects in SW1 but there could be something in TARZAN that's not in SW1. First of all, TARZAN could be nominated for the Phil Collins song, "You'll Be In My Heart" what song will SW1 be nominated for? Absolutly nothing!!!! Tarzan could be nominated for best comedy or musical score but SW1 can't be nominated because they're using the same damn music that they used in all the others. SW could've been nominated when it opened. But they made three other movies since then with the same music!! So, in other words we can't really judge which movie will be the best this summer. It's a buggy ug world out there and some movie could get HURT!! You guys have a nice summer. Let's ride!

    Lost Generation

    by aria

Hey all. It was really interesting to read about how you guys all think this film will fare. It was really impressive to see that some people are really into animation and to see the terminology they were using. Supafly. I agree with points made by all sides, as there is some truth in the points you guys are making. But what I want to complain about and ask is HOW COME DISNEY ALWAYS SKIPS MY GENERATION???
I mean, I really liked Disney movies up until whenever Pocahontas came out. That was the first Disney film in the sequence of flops (in my opinion), and since that one, I've been reluctant to watch any more. Although I have subjected myself to a few. (WHAT THE HELL WAS HERCULES???) But it ocurred to me that once I was past a certain age, the themes in Disney's movies didn't appeal to me anymore... I mean, there were some noble attempts like Disney's Mulan, but even before the movie came out, I found myself shying away from the movie for the following reasons:

    1) I'm Chinese, and I KNEW that they were going to trivialize what is a great legend in China. And they did a pretty good job of it by introducing a stupid, talking dragon. With Eddie Murphy's voice nonetheless. ARG.

    2) They made Mulan look really ugly.

    3) They got many factual points in the movie SERIOUSLY wrong... Mulan was wearing a Kimono for most of the movie... CHINESE don't wear kimonos. The Japanese do. Thanks for mixing up the cultures, Disney. And if you even dare to say, as many people in this country seem to assume, WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME. Every country in Asia has their own culture that they are extremely proud about.

But I am straying from my point. The point is, I think that Disney should realize that there IS a HUGE age group, one that starts from 16 and goes through to end at around the late thirties, that expect to be as entertained as they were when they were 8. And with age comes maturity. This is where I agree with some people that Disney should not be afraid to make a animated film that attracts an older audience. Appealing to an older audience doesn't mean they have to constantly make crude sexual innuendoes like those tv shows "Ally McBeal" or "Melrose Place", but it's gotta be able to touch the person's heart and make them stop and think about the movie a little longer... That's what most of the older audience is looking for, and must say that we definitely outnumber the "kiddies". Besides, aren't we the ones making the money that they will use to see the movie with??? So please, I'm begging you Disney, let us be spending a worthwhile $7 on a Friday night. Otherwise other smart people will be doing what I've been doing these past years: Waiting for the movie to premiere on television.

I don't know why I'm even writing such a long review since all I'm going to be doing is probably starting a whole string of sneering rebuttals to my opinion, but hell, I'm going to post this anyway.
