Mason Jar Binks looks at OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE

Published at:  May 26, 1999 2:57:28 AM CDT

Well, here's a look at that film starring Shawn Hatosy that you might have seen the trailer before Star Wars for... Called OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE. I've been hearing good things about this movie for quite some time, and it's nice to hear the word is consistent. Here's Mason Jar Binks....

I saw "Outside Providence" at a screening the other day and I really
liked it-- it was hysterical. First of all, it was from a novel written
by one of the Farrelly Bros. (those guys who did the hilarious Kingpin
and also Something About Mary). It’s the story of this poor kid in
Providence, R.I. who gets sent away to a fancy boarding school. Kind of
like Rushmore meets Dazed and Confused. Basically, a series of scenes
from this guy’s life as he comes of age in the 70’s — but what was
especially cool about it (besides some really hysterical scenes that I
split my sides laughing at, like the main character’s roomate’s story
of how he got the name "Jiz") was the realistic way it portrayed teen
life. Even though it was set in the 70’s, these kids were shown in a
way I could relate to. They have fun, suffer, and love each other in
the same way I did not so long ago… without censorship.

Another reason the movie lingered in my mind was Alec Baldwain’s
portrayal of the protagonist’s father. He was just great, classic
Baldwin gruffness with a heart of gold. For any of the ladies who like
him, he’s at his most Baldwinesque, struggling with his heart in the
face of his masculine responsibilities. He’s such a jerk to his
son—only calls him "Dildo"—but though it may seem cruel it’s done in
the way that only the Farrelly brothers can—making you laugh throughout
the hardships, allowing you to see the humour in even the most
humilating aspects of life.

Anyway, I recommend it, if only for some of the funniest moments I’ve
seen in a movie since There’s Something About Mary.

I saw the trailer for this before Ep 1. It looks hilarious. The 3-legged dog with the eyepatch was a big crowd pleaser. And I thought Alec Baldwin was great. The audience laughed through the whole trailer and so did I. I'm looking forward to seeing this one! OB out.

    Baldwin

In defense of Alec Baldwin, I have to say that his greatest asset is passion. I wasn't his biggest fan in the world, but after I heard him give a speech at Syracuse University this year, I was more than convinced of his dedication to both acting AND politics. He's a man of great integrity, and I admire him for that if nothing else.

    My comments.

    1) I saw a trailer for Outside Providence MONTHS ago..... I think it was before Varsity Blues. Mind you, this is when it was still scheduled to come out in the spring..... what's it pushed back to now, October? Hmm. I didn't see this one before TPM either time I saw it, however, I noticed that on the Fox trailer the second time I saw it, the teaser for The Beach was replaced with one for Fight Club.... alternate version, or last minute change by Fox in response to audiences booing Leo? Who knows. All I know is the coolest part of the Beach teaser was the background music, "Touched" by VAST.... great song.
    2) In response to MOVIERITR, Alec Baldwin was NOT SNL's funniest host. Hands down winner is Kevin Spacey, who hosted in january of '97. He blew the entire cast out of the water, and exhibted the widest range of dead-on celebrity impressions since the late, great master Phil Hartman. Especially during the "Star Wars Screen Test" sketches, the funniest thing SNL's done in years next to Goth Talk. Kevin Spacey playing Jack Lemmon reading for Chewbacca is absolutely classic. "What the hell is a Wookiee? Matthau got to read for Obi-Wan, and I get the (bleep)ing Wookiee!"

    Jiz scene

    by taffyguy

As a participant in the Jiz scene (guy in blue sweater next to roommate on floor) I'd have to say if the movie holds to that scene and less of the actual book, they could be in business. I could have gotten that coveted older boy role, except for my slight hight disadvantage. For other work of mine check out the Taffy in the Love Letter. That's me as well.

    baldwin: hottie or hairy?

    by savage lollipop

look, I can understand why baldwin would be "for the ladies", even though he looks like such a dad (or maybe because). Besides he's funny as hell... perhaps it just takes a lady to understand his stuff... he could light my fire any day. hee hee.
I'm curious to see what kinda movie the Farrelly bros. will come up with next.
who's this Hatosy kid? is he any good?
