More on THOUGH THE SKY MAY FALL (aka HEAVEN MAY FALL)
Well here's more on that film we reported on yesterday, though the title is changed. I really enjoyed THE GENERAL, and it seems this may cover the same period. Can't wait to see how it comes together...
Here is some information about 'Though the Sky May Fall'. Well for a
start a number of changes have been made to both the name of the film
and characters. The film is now called 'Heaven May Fall' and does star
Joan Allen as 'Veronica Guerin'. A number of the characters (criminals)
involved have recently had their names changed, the character that
resembled a well known dublin criminal began as 'The Abbot' but has
since become 'The Roadrunner' and most recently 'The Runner'. Remember
the great John Borman film 'The General', well the General fretures in
this film (small part) but in this film he is called 'The Commandant'.
A number of scenes for the film were shot last week on a street called
'Harry St'...cool or what!. As you know Joan Allen takes the leading
role, but others involved include Dubliner Paul Ronan who played Brad
Pitts IRA sidekick in 'Devils Own' and Liam Carney who featured in the
commitments. Liam Carney is supposed to be playing a character thought
to resemble John Gilligan (the criminal mind supposed to be behing
Veronica Guerins Murder). Gilligan is currently in prison in England on
drugs charges but is wanted in Ireland for Guerins Murder.
Anyway the film has been shooting around Dublin for a few weeks now and
is due to wrap in 2 weeks.
If i hear any more about this or other films here i'll let ya know.
Oh Yea, before i go..Kevin Spacey was in dublin for 2 months before
christmas filming 'Honest Decent Criminals', looks like Dublin is a
favourite for crime films these days.

Is this -Heaven May Fall- another movie about Martin Cahill or is it about Veronica Guerin? Who plays 'The General/Commandant' in this one?

...and lets just hope there's at least one yank who can pull off a decent Irish accent. I'm sure one day it'll happen, but then again....we're talking Americans here........hmmmm......

I was lucky enough to catch the premiere of "The General" in Dublin last summer. Let me tell you, to be able to walk the same streets and visit the same locations of a foreign produced film was intense. I must admit, I thought that the film weighed a bit heavy on traditional Irish stereotypes; being that I'm Irish-American watching an Irish produced movie while taking summer law classes in Ireland, it's very hard not to be critical about the romanticism of the Irish Republic Army. But, all in all, it was a well made film. I look forward to seeing a different perspective on Irish culture, regardless if the movie is set around the same time period. Hopefully, this film will be multi-faceted in comparison with "The General" and take into account all of the perspectives of the republic's problems ala "Michael Collins."

The film is definately about Veronica Guerin - the Irish Sunday Independent journalist who reported on the criminal activities of various Dublin based 'hoods'.
Guerin confronted these people on many occasions outside their homes etc etc and was threatened on many occasions. Several months before her death she was shot in the leg as a waning. She relentlessly persued these criminals whom she felt were acting above the law withour respect for human life, diginity or justice. Eventually she was murdered on the Naas Road outside Dublin on a very hot summer's day while waiting for the traffic lights to change. Her assassins drove up beside her car on a motorbike and fired at point blank range.
Last week I drove by the crew as they were filming this scene outside Bray in County Wicklow. It was a disturbing picture as they were using a similar bright red sports car as the one she was driving on the day she was killed.
Guerin had been on the phone to her editor minutes before her death. He heard of the shooting about 10 minutes after it happened though a source in the loacl police force and tried ringing her phone again. Thats when he realised the story was true.
Guerin was working on this film herself before she was killed.
Sadly, the writers were given an ending by her violent death.
Apparently security on the set is tight - several local criminals are unhappy about their representations - as for the nicknames - the Sunday Independent has used these for some time to sensationalise their activities in an irresponsible and increasingly naive way. For many - these films romanticise the violent actions of the few and ignore the plight of their victims.
