Tom Cruise To Star In Spy Thriller From 24 Writers Surnow and Loceff??

Published at:  Apr 30, 2008 12:52:31 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Tom Cruise continues to recruit from television.

Fresh from hiring “Battlestar Galactica” mastermind Ronald D. Moore to script an unspecified sci-fi movie trilogy, Cruise’s UA has now tapped longtime “24” writer-producers Joel Surnow and Michael Loceff to bang out a contemporary spy thriller for the big screen.

Recall that Cruise also plucked J.J. Abrams from a successful TV career to make his feature directorial debut on "Mission: Impossible III."

Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”), just set to direct a new Mel Gibson starring vehicle “Edge of Darkness” (the actor's first in six years), will helm also the UA feature, but it’s unknown if Cruise will star in the spy tale.

Neither Surnow nor Loceff have yet seen any of their work in cinemas. Surnow recently developed the fake-newscast comedy series "The Half-Hour News Hour" for the Fox News Channel.

Tits down to there and grey in the bush. Man, I'd have that for breakfast five days a week.

He's not that high yet- I think that is his next step on the road to enlightenment (by when he will have paid the GDP of Bolivia to Scientology). At his current stage he believes he can move things with the power of his mind. This is fair enough. If you forked over hundreds of millions of dollars you would at least want superpowers. Otherwise you would be a mug that had been completely fooled by a group of charlatans that believe in a space Alien, and that we all have alien spirits living inside us. And nobody wants to be that cunt, do they?

    S and L

    by cobbio

As much as I'm skeptical of Tom Cruise, I'm happy he's pulling in good writers for ORIGINAL upcoming projects. I hope the projects are original, anyway. I've read that Ron Moore's trilogy might be an adaptation of something, but either way this whole hiring spree is pretty cool.
Whether you like "24" or not, the show has maintained its generally hard-edged spark and viewership for many years, mostly due to its writing. Surnow and Loceff have even elevated freakin' Kiefer Sutherland into a larger-than-life character, yet Bauer is now destitute, emotionally crippled, and, paradoxically, has lost his family and everything he ever loved. He's not a happy man and at this point he's running on fumes.
Compare this to other spy-thriller shows like, I don't know, "The Unit," where characters are essentially the same caricatures every week and no particular tragedy afflicts them. I like "The Unit," don't get me wrong, but the reason people like Bauer so much is because he suffers. He's always in pain. Yet, despite the odds, he still tries to do the right thing. Surnow and Loceff are two of the main writers who've given Jack this, and I'm sure they could bang out a badass R-rated film. I'm excited to see what they come up with.

Hoo Ahh!!!Fun aside...I've also heard he's a really kewl guy...stopped to help a young girl getting crushed by crowd and paparazzi and literally pulled her out of the crowd himself. Also, during a shoot for some movie (dunno which) he went to a local convenience store and on the spot dropped $5000 in a jar the owner had set up for charity for a local girl who needed an operation or something. I really don't care if he's queer or those religious gasbag's prophet. Keep participating in good cinema and I'll watch and enjoy. Thanks! Wacko Tom

    by jazz_jeff

Despite what PR stunts he will try and pull between now and the release of his next film (now delayed for further PR reasons!), the public has had enough of this nutcase. Military saluting a head of a cult (an insult to those that ARE in the services and fighting) on stage in front of an audience does nothing for his wacko creditability. That and the fact that he's a known domineering control freak, has Katie Holmes and child on a very short leash, he's frankly not wanted by the masses. The only people that will be tuning in is the stupid and dumb that accept this wacko and the cash grabbing cult as something that should be gotten away with - in other words, the stupid still still follow the even more stupid.

    "I'M NOT GAY!": THE MOVIE

    by thegreatwhatzit

I think that Cruise's career has crashed and burned: the phoney marriage (another defense against tabloids "outting" him), the pathetic Oprah performance (another reinforcement of the failed "I'm not gay" stategy), the zip boxoffice of LIONS/LAMBS, et al. His latest, VALKYRIE, has been indefinitey bumped (lots of retakes are necessary, not to mention a dubbed German accent for Cruise), et al. He'll try to amend his dumber-than-dumb demeanor by making himself accessible to talk shows. Won't work. He should ahve come out of the closet a long time ago--at least he would have earned respect.

Hes constanly only playing himself..which is a mistake to me because his personality is not a likable one in the least....im sure it has to do with why hes never won an oscar
