THE DARK KNIGHT Posterrama!!
Merrick here...
Around the same time the new DARK KNIGHT trailer leaked (HERE), Yahoo premiered some new promotional images from THE DARK KNIGHT.
They appear here in a small form. CLICK HERE to jump to Yahoo's slideshow of the material (and larger versions).

Put the above images together, and they make this:

A fourth (or would this be a fifth?) poster is also making the rounds...I can't tell if this was an exclusive on some site, or a generally released image. So...if this is your "exclusive" or something, write me with a link & I'll adjust this article accordingly.

THEN, there's this one. It appears to be billboard art, and comes to us via JoBlo (ARTICLE HERE).

There are likely twenty or thirty more posters out there somewhere. If we missed any, we'll update this article accordingly (and go insane).

Why?
-
I guess Batman doesn't like to sit in traffic.
-
These have been out for about a day now...not on top of things at all!! But still cool posters
-
i think this will be a wicked movie.
-
WTF?
-
I'd hate to see how many will be on the third one's posters.
-
I had better things to do with my time. *I have spoken*
-
Is anybody else on board that the Harvey Dent one looks ridiculous? "Here. Have a Button. I will very naturally hold it up to give it to you in front of my face. Thank you. My name is Harvey Dent, by the way." Yes, I am excited to see TwoFace in the new movies, but let's face facts. The general public does not give a shit about Harvey Dent.
-
Wow those are exactly like I expected…Juvenile! Give me Hellboy.
-
...posted on JoBlo. I could wallpaper my entire apartment with TDK posters (granted, my apartment is fucking small, but still...)
-
shot for shot remake of the original trailer? or some nice editing? http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1813453
-
really, really bothers me. I hated it in the original Batman movies and I hate it now.
-
remove space in url http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1813453
-
Why?
-
Just saw these on Yahoo. The Joker one makes me laugh because he looks aggravated that he's holding up that card. Like the Joker hates doing press/photo shoots.
-
screw heath ledger, aaron eckhart is going to blow this movie away
-
Eckhart is Two-Face? I HAD NO FUCKING IDEA. Way to ruin the surprise, poster...
-
The Batpod one looks like a poster a 6 year old would hang in his room. I love how the studio puts this stuff out 2 weeks before Speed Racer and Ironman as if to say “hey remember us?” Well screw you and your viral marketing, rubber goofy batsuit, really lame looking Joker and for making a franchise suck again.

-
But i NEED to see Indy IV
-
that's obviously a fake. a 1989 trailer isn't going to have "mpaa.org" on the green screen.
-
trying to overshadow the rival comic-filmo f the year?
-
thought this could be an edit job...
-
and as far as the combination poster goes, depth of field issues should have been addressed before the release. The background is blurry on Joker and Batman, but the foreground is blurry on Dent. That is fine if you want to make them individual posters, but when you put all three images on the same poster, it just looks sloppy.
-
maybe Nolan got a clue from the batman anime shorts
-
a larger audience than us geeks maybe? I am excited to see the film, but dont want it to be ruined by too many trailers/commercials/feautures, etc, in which they give up even more of the plot. @BigBaby, that dual trailer is pretty awesome
-
I did not create the Pod Poster. That's pretty gay. I also did not create gay. *I have spoken*
-
...NOW!... Dammit...!...
-
But the storytelling was lame.
-
such a brilliant job on Joker, can't wait to see what TwoFace is going to look like, or how crazy his character will be...has Ekchart ever played a villain or a loony before? I've only seen him do normal people.
-
AICN is always a day behind the news and usually has to cite another Web site (like JoBlo). Actually, it's almost always JoBlo. Do you guys just scower other news sites and then place their news on AICN, now? <p> Sad.
-
Seriously, who cares? As long as it isn't oversaturated ala Godzilla. Also, DannyGlover, I think you meant it was iconic when Nicholson walked towards the screen as Nicholson donning Joker makeup -- that was iconic. Because it sure as hell wasn't the Joker that Nicholson was playing in that film.
-
of Gyllenhaal? got tomake their ends meet.
-
...the posters are probably the best looking of the last 10 (or more)years!
-
Chill, DC. Let Iron Man leave theaters, then you can have your batfiesta.
-
why have i heard nothing about this movie? this summer is too crowded.
-
Stark, dark, edgy, gritty. Isn't this how Batman has always supposed to look? More evidence that this is a golden year for film fantasy. Hope the final product pays off as much as everything we've seen so far indicates.
-
...at marketing meetings. I say this because everything for this film has been top shelf so far...truly iconic and classic poster art. These are cool, but somehow lacking...
-
Die.
-
box office receipts for TDK drop off once word of how bad it sucks spreads. *I have spoken*
-
intended. All the others were juvenile, inconsistent and sloppy. They might have had some good elements and were ok for kids, but Nolan's is the first that respects the audience. We comic readers are after all getting older and wiser. well some of us.
-
...doesn't Harvey Dent's button look a lot like a messed-up eyeball (al a Two-Face)? If that's what they were going for it's kinda cool.
-
Burton's Batman films were shite. At least we won't have Heath Ledger's Joker dancing around to Prince songs while he defaces paintings. As Joseph Smith once sang, Dumb - Dumb - Dumb - Dumb!
-
Bwah ha ha! That's a joke right? geez. Go back and watch Batman Returns again and just try telling me that Batman Begins can stand up anywhere near it!
-
The songs may not be prince, but the Joker is a flamboyent personality, and the trailers so far seem to indicate we might catch Ledger's Joker dancing around at least once.
-
People awaken and crawl directly out of Christopher Nolans asshole and realize that they have been mislead.
-
You are either trying to be funny or have some of the worst taste in movies I have ever seen. Burton's Batman was watchable but Batman Returns was feces dude.
-
The real trailer is on the Batman SE DVD. Whoever made that side-by-side comparison just re-edited footage from the '89 movie to sync up with the TDK trailer. Nice work, though, except for the fore-mentioned present-day green band.
-
Re:...doesn't Harvey Dent's button look a lot like a messed-up eyeball (ala Two-Face)? Holy shit-you're right! I never even thought about that!
-
Looking forward to seeing what they do (makeup wise) to make him Two-Face
-
Hi, My name is Joker, and today I would like to show youmycard with the Batman on it.<p><p><p> Hi My name is Batman and this is my cool little bat boomerang!! I can throw it and stuff. NEAT HUH?!??! huh huh!!<p><p><p>Hi My name is Dent and this is my AWESOME BUTTON!!!

I still like the one with the burning logo in the building.
by SkidMarkedUndies
That one is going on my wall.
-
I agree that Batman Returns is pure creepy brilliance. Yeah it was cheesy and camp-ish, but at least it had some character development.
-
The giant rubber duck that Penguin rode for one, just off the top of my head. But I see what you mean about "My actions define me!" lines in Begins. The worst part about BB is that it had lame, watered-down villains.
-
April 29, 2008, 9:54 a.m. CST
Okay, I know Nolan has to copy Burton subconsciously...
by Stalin vs Predator
There is no way he couldn't do that - inferior directors tend to do so - but how could he think that referencing the "Clooney holding up his bat credit card" scene would work as a poster? :o)
-
The real one, Jack Nicholson, of course. Not Marilyn Manson here.
-
was around back then in 89. is that your argument as too it being a fake trailer. There were tons of trailers for 89 bats. mute the volume and watch it again. Watch the 89. When mouths move in the 89 trailer they finish the sentence. I don't think it's a recut I feel like i've seen that trailer.
-
but some of us grew up, or even found those earlier batmovies lacking back then.
-
Batman: The Animated Series is superior to any live-action incarnation of the character. We have yet to see Batman as a detective in any of the movies. The Batman in Batman Begins was not only an arrogant prick, but a dumbass.
-
I made Batman 89 better than Batman Begins.
-
I'm here for the Joker! You understand. I'll come back for 2face, but the bats. I just love to watch this preppy fuck hurt! The Crow is gay.
-
Like I said, maybe that was obvious to everyone else but I didn't notice it the first time...guess I'm a bit slow on the uptake...
-
..and the like. I am so glad to see all of you who hate or dislike Batman Begins. It's nice to know that people out there still have a sense of taste. BATMAN BEGINS WAS ABSOLUTE SHIT!!!!!!!! I have said it, I have explained my reasoning, and I don't give a shit....BB fucking sucked!!! Ordering Bat Masks from China? Stupid. The batmobile hopping roofs? Not to mention the stupid ass design of it!! As Pilgrim stated and I have stated a hundred times. Bales voice is the gay. He is THE worst Batman. The scarecrow? Are you fucking kidding me? The goddamned mob boss looked like low budget 70's tv actor. Batman riding around on a horse commanding bats? Fuck you that sucked!!! Giant cgi water, what the fuck ever manipulator as a WMD? Fuck off!!! Liam Qui Gon Gin side kick in Krull Neeson as that gay ninja Ras?!!! Fuck you again... Damn I could go on and on and on.....Fuck you !!!!!
-
Oldman's character was bland as shit. The girl...what's her fuck...she was worthless and had no point. Bale running off to some mountain top with a flower and becoming a ninja after only four days of watching a Billy Banks Tai Bo video. Then kicking all four of the Ninja Turtles asses only to fall off of Mount Fuji and land at the bottom with Austion Powers dad waiting on him in a suit. Morgan Freeman gives Bat Bale the whole Batsuit and Fagmobile and doesn't notice a thing when Batman is in this thing double duching across roofs. damn I can keep going.
-
Much like Batman Begins, this will be a fantastic movie. All the above may hate all you want (whether you like Burton's Batman or whatever), but I am looking forward to this movie. <p>Oh, and Underoos, "Batman riding around on a horse commanding bats?" Huh? I must have missed that.
-
Bat Bale gets all drunk and like a deadbeat son burns his parents mansion down leaving himself and Nigel Powers homeless. The scarecrow come along with a fucking potato sack over his head and blows some goddamn shroom dust in this bad 70's tv show actors face then the bad actor has a real bad acting spell and gets put in some retirement home for bad actors with the ScareNope following right behind him after Bat Bale reverses (that clever Nigel Powers) the effects of the dust shrooms back on to ScareNope. Then Bat Bale runs around looking for that useless whore bag he shacked up with only to discover that the main plot of the movie involves some huge laser water hose that Qui Gon is using to water the scarecrows shrooms. Then Bat Bale hitches a ride on the train because the budget was running out towards the end for the movie so they had to wrap things up real quick. Only to find Qui Gon talking to Darth Maul and plotting the destruction of City Bank and Starbucks. Bat Bale really likes Starbucks and is pissd that he and Nigel Powers are homeless so he fights the Jedi and leaves him to die on the train as it careens down a set of poorly built tracks that Bat Bales father designed and crashes into a bank of America killing the last jedi.
-
I'm not kidding...BATMAN BEGINS has the suck of American Idol!!
-
The narrative is cut to match the new one, but its still amazing. Joker owned my childhood.
-
Looks so fucking awesome. Kinda stole Iron Man's thunder for me.
-
every poster, leak, trailer, one sheet has been amazing.
-
every poster, leak, trailer, one sheet has been shit.
-
and it pulls him in and he gets all creeped out like it's gonna fuck him in the ass! Batman Begins is tedious and boring. The villains are gay as hell. The water madness microwave vicks vapor machine is retarded. It is the cherry on the R-Tard cake for me. Say what you will about balloons with toxic nerve gas agents in them. It's a hell of a lot easier to buy then some microwave gun that makes a vapor activated toxin.
-
This movie looks feels and acts like it is trying to hard. Get your hands off your boners guys, it's never been that good.
-
Was the absolute suck. I got tourettes all of a sudden and I was like..."What the goddamned hell is this fucking shit?" Fuck!! Ass!!! BOB SAGGETT!!!
-
Are you Moviemack's new login? Or are you some other functionally retarded Talkbacker?
-
Fuck you and your god.
-
To, Two, Too. They all mean different things. Look them up. While you're at it, see a therapist because your frequent homophobic jabs (though referencing a film you dislike) say a lot about your closeted sexuality...
-
That was my tourettes kicking in...AAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
-
Parade sized Balloons on the same. They can not however build a fucking Embiggen Microwave Vick's Vapor Toxic Fume making Machine. I rest My case... The Nolan going for real world esthetics hit a brick wall with that polished turd.
-
Thanks I'll take note of that Master Windu.
-
That 89 trailer is cool but It’s not the original at all. Aside from the obvious they just didn’t make previews with that style of editing back then. But the person that created it brings up a really good point, what was hype for retarded story telling back then is hype for retarded story telling nowadays. Just like back then, fans were starving for a Batman movie so much that they accepted what they got. Oooo look at the shiny things! Chumps. We’ll never get “The” Batman we deserve, ever. Not as long as producers say things at meetings like “does really have to wear a mask?”
-
..the whole movie...it was real shitty.
-
Looks Like SuperChicken.
-
Batman Returns is actually closest to the comic than any of the other films period. It wasn’t perfect but it was at least Batman-ish. Someone earlier mentioned the Animated series and yea that’s the best all the way around.
-
Batman Ends. Let's please put these terrible movies to rest. I go to a movie for escapeism. That is why we read comics and books and see movies. To be taken somewhere else. I'm not going to see a Batman flick so that I can be sucked into some modern day cop reality story with some costumed Dagonconer running around in front of a Starbucks. That kind of shit pulls me right out of the movie and is fucking depressing. It's like being real high with your friends in a dark house at three o'clock in the morning playing some good music and someone flips the fucking light on and yells out what time it is. You come crashing down and you want to kick the dudes ass for being like Christopher Nolan.
-
You are my new hero.
-
I'm already sold after seeing the bank robbery sneak peak in IMAX. In fact, that's where I'll be seeing this bad boy too. IMAX mo fukkahs!!
-
please Bale...don't over-do the wisper-talk again. PLEASE
-
Can't wait for this.
-
I want you to tell me how "realism" equates to good story telling when it concerns a "COMIC BOOK" movie. Please explain that. If you need reality, leave the fucking house but don't stir it up in to my imaginary Super Hero Soup.
-
DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD + Underoos Hero = SUPERTROLL!
-
This looks fun. My favorite is still Batman Returns, this may top it. I don't think Batman needs to be realistic, but by the end of this one he will have a sweet Rouges Gallery, with Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow and Ra's, so plausibility will be pretty much gone. I hope it'll be fun.
-
I want you to tell me how "realism" equates to good story telling when it concerns a "COMIC BOOK" movie. Please explain that. If you need reality, leave the fucking house but don't stir it up in to my imaginary Super Hero Soup.
-
We've already had the surreal fever-dream Batman of Tim Burton, as well as the uber-gay, fashion-designer's Batman of Schumacher. We've seen the cartoon version, and the stupid campy version. If that's your flavor then visit Best Buy, Block Buster, or log on to Net-Flix.
-
Your the one who is only savvy enough to refer to Michael Caine as Nigel Powers, and talks about getting high in the theater. I think your demographic is one they should be avoiding at all cost.
-
Very well Underoos. <p>I'm not sure how Batman Begins was realistic. It took place in a modern day city, but him hopping to and fro from buildings, hopping across roof tops in the tumbler, the whole microwave emitter is most definitely a comic book type weapon. <p>Oh, and your super hero soup is spiked with some crazy I think...
-
You have a problem with the butler if he dusts or not?
-
I agree though that the batpod is fucking ASS, i just cant get over the fucking guns bobbing around like jelly, hmmm bet they're accurate! If the batpod wasnt so lame that poster would own. The other ones are awful photoshop jobs. Still, that burning building one is a great poster, more like that please!
-
It's realism in the sense of plausibility. Batman is the one of the few superhero characters one can even attempt to take this approach with because he has no fantastic super-powers, and amping down the less realistic elements allows things like story and character to come to the forefront. We may disagree on the quality of those elements in BB, but I'm confident in my opinion that they were of high quality in both cases. BB had more depth than the average superhero story, and having more realistic environments, explanations, etc, helped in getting that across.
-
two guys who will never get laid so they try to prove their manhood by talking shit about one of the most critically acclaimed superhero movie while sitting at their house naked whacking off to east asian s&m porn. Seriously guys, no one cares what you think
-
I personally like Jack Nicholson as the Joker and I also like Heather Ledger's take on it as well. I also don't mind that Michael Caine is never seen dusting a bookshelf. What you and underoos want just couldn't happen again. The studio would not have backed another set of movies that looked anything close to what Joel Schumacher did and no one familiar with those movies would have returned - except maybe you two. Logically, they had to do a 180. <P> Stylistically, I think there is room for BB, and TDK. Reinterpretation is what comics are all about.
-
Listen, mixing a "COMIC BOOK" hero into a live setting (like Chicago, CitiBank, and Starbuckaroos) does NOT translate very well on the big screen at all. At all! You can not have your Fruit Loops and the purple plastic parrot spoon too. You can't tell me that it's ok for a Bat Tank to skip around the roof tops like a goddamned clown on a pogo stick whilst contemplating Ockman's Razor. FUCK YOU. It Does not work!!
-
"I want you to tell me how "realism" equates to good story telling when it concerns a "COMIC BOOK" movie." I think it works very well for Batman, who has no superpowers... and that's why Batman has always been my favorite comic book hero. He feels like someone who could exist. I can't relate to an alien who can fly around the planet and shoot lasers from his eyes. Sure, there are stretches of the imagination, but those stretches are simply easier to swallow in a movie more rooted in reality. But that's just me.
-
Yeah I'm still not entirely sure how Bat's would keep his cape out of the back wheel, or without a front fender he doesn't get mud and wet pavement in his face..But whatever, I can deal.
-
Oh well: at least he's moaning about Batman Begins in a relevant thread this time.<br><br>Responding to your own comments and complimenting yourself under another pseudonym is so 1989.
-
"does NOT translate very well on the big screen at all. At all!" <P> So says you.
-
in fact plausibility can actually be a tool to help suspension of disbelief. In the case of BB many of the things you hate for "realism" are actually just tools to help you get over the ridiculous comic book weaponry and the fact that A FUCKING BILLIONAIRE CHOOSES TO SPEND HIS TIME DRESSED AS A BAT. <P>You are being over literal and trainspotterish. Just relax and enjoy what was a good start.
-
for the bat tank thing to be bouncing around the roof. <P>That is what is meant by suspension of disbelief.
-
But you have still failed to expalin why a "COMIC BOOK" movie should have injected realism. WHY? If you want to even attempt this sort of thing then you should do as Zack Snyder did with 300 or Miller with Sin City. Create a world around the character. This makes the costumes and gadgets more beleiveable!! Don't be a lazy douche fuck like Nolan and throw a rubber suit on a stunt guy, rent a Citi Bank building for a day and have him stand on top of it. That is what it is. Some dumb looking shit. I liked Burtons Batman for the above stated points about a stylized world built and designed to surround Batman. You could suspend your beleifs and beleive this Batguy could exist in this world. Yea it was cartoony but I appreciated it for that.
-
"don't stir it up into my imaginary Super Hero Soup."/"You can not have your Fruit Loops and the purple plastic parrot spoon too." I always love your little bits of wisdom.
-
haha...thanks... but some would say that there is trollin'.
-
I pointed out some posts above that it is not realistic. Oh, but in your fits of insanity, I guess you missed it.
-
You're going to have to deal with the fact that people prefer Begins to Burton's Batman. I happen to appreciate both movies for different reasons. But I also have to admit that Batman Begins is far superior, truer to the character, and simply more convincing. Burton's is fluffy, lacking in plot, but happens to have amazing atmosphere and one of the best villain performances in history.
-
in Burton's Batman, and not Nolan's. That just doesn't make sense. It's about a guy who fights crime dressed as a bat. And jumps/sails/hovers all around the city. I certainly don't see that everyday. <p>Then again, I don't eat super hero soup, so maybe that's why..
-
..but I'll pray to Satan that these types of movie ideals be stricken from mankinds thoughts of good cinema. Along with that movie "I pronounce you Chuck and Larry" and anything concerning Adam Sandler.
-
I read your posts. I am agreeing to disagree. However I didn't find the arguments strong enough. You see comic movies differently but I see them as I beleive many should see them. This is why everyone complains when their favorite comic characters do not match the comics, am I right? Now I know that Batman has always had a real side to the character arch but it does not translate well on screen in this context. Sorry. It doesn't.
-
It didn't inject realism- please, a fucking microwave emitter that puts LSD in the air is not realistic- a fucking car that can jump rivers to build bridges is not realistic. <P>However, the explanation given for these ridiculous devices was to some extent plausible.<P>DOn't forget Batman is a normal guy with a shitload of cash and even more personality problems. A bit of plausibility can help suspension of disbelief- but at the end of the day it was still incredibly comic book-y
-
.. You see comic movies differently but I see them as I beleive many "PEOPLE DO" see them. not as I believe many should...I'm not an elitest....
-
and there we have the problem- we destroy Ringwearer9 frequently for his Tolien Anorak-isms. <P>Your problem is the same as his- unless the vision presented matches the one in his head it shall forever be without merit. <P>And why should anyone else's vision match yours? That's just an unbelievably arrogant statement. <P>For the record, I thought BB was OK with plenty to build on, but I prefer 89 Batman.
-
never mind then. Typos are typos.
-
the plot thickens.
-
And you've just answered your own question. You are projecting on your specific view of what Batman should be onto everyone else's.<p> "You see comic movies differently but I see them as I beleive many should see them."<p>You are absolutely correct. I've never read a Batman comic, but I totally prefer Nolan's version to Burton's. Mainly because I couldn't believe that Keaton could be Batman, and I wasn't crazy about Nicholson. Oh, and while Kim Basinger was quite yummy, she was awful. So no difference there for me as compared to Katie.
-
The whole BatCar doing the double duch like a black girl in Harlem across roof tops was the suck but it does not mix with the reality that Nolan was trying to put in place in the film. It made the consistancy flow like a backed up toilet.
-

ah, I have to take back my first line too Underoos...
by just pillow talk
-
Do you want the Bob Cane Batman? How about the 80's Batman, or the 90's? Which comic should they model the movies after Underoos? Alan Moore's killing joke maybe? Or do you want Frank Miller? - which is who Burton was taking from.
-
of course it was completely daft- but there was plausibility established that it could. Once established that it was designed to hop around like a flea on amphetimines then it was easy to believe it when you saw it.
-
...like Underoos and whoever long for their version of "the perfect Batman movie"... akin to that shitty fan-produced fake triler where the dude in the Batman Halloween costume fought Aliens Vs. Predator. Yeah... real good... stupid dorks!
-
I don't want people to think like me that's for sure. Then everyone would be watching re-runs of the A-team with the sound off whilst marching around in their underoos with a plastic sword in hand, blasting the sound track to Conan.
-
I have to ask did you like Superman Returns or Spiderman 3 or X3?
-
Alan Moore's killing joke or Frank Miller. It doesn't matter. Just stylize the world spend some time and effort to build this space the characters live in. This is what Peter Jackson understood about LOTR. He knew that withouth those elements the movies would not work.
-
None of them.
-
No one wants that. No one.
-
Honestly they have over done the posters here. we're getting into the realms of Lucasfilm overkill here. The viral campaign was doing more work wioth its codas and undergorund vibe. but the continuing posters are just going to saturate the customer. STOP IT!! The irony is that the best poster was the one with with Bats looking out over the city panorama like a man with the world on his shoulders. WB just cease with the posters will you? Again i say the executives at WB NEED to give a job their to sort them out.
-
see you tomorrow.
-
It's Hong Kong. It's poster from Hong Kong and they put Batman IN Hong Kong. I think that's pretty ingenious. Batman Begins had a lot of problems in the third act but it still might be better as a whole than any of the Burton stuff. Keaton, Nicholson and DeVito were excellent in their roles but the movies haven't aged so well.
-
What happened to actual intelligent posting on this site? The old times are far behind me. Thank you DannyGlover'sDickBlood, you have proved to me there is no reason to read comments anymore. It's gotten to the point that it is as bad as youtube video comments, and those are just completely pointless and retarded.
-
You laud Jackson for building middle earth but slate Nolan for spending a long time on the origin? that's contradictory. <P>I thought the third act was the weakest bit. By a ong way (aside from every moment Mrs Cruise was on screen)
-
Far too much information.
-
I laud Nolan for spending a long time in front of Starbucks.
-
Elvis has lef the dinner table.
-
your being glib and hypocritical.

Have to go home,
-
I was being nice with you. No need for the insults. Let it rest. Now..Elvis has tried to leave the toilet...
-
I'll see the movie opening weekend, but those character posters are lame and the Bat-pod looks stupid. Broken office window scene? Stolen from Revenge of the Sith.
-
You got it. Just watch Batman and Robin and bask in the pure stylization. I'm not bashing that movie, as I did like bobbing head Batman, but Nolan's second outing so far looks pretty awesome and a return to grittier Batman that I grew up with in the comics.

I cannot wait for Nolan's realistic take on the Penguin!
by ScoobysSpleen
He'll be a short fat guy in a tuxedo. Wow! And just think of what he could do with Bane... he'd make him a tall big guy in an undershirt! Wowzers, Penny! Can't DC give Nolan the Superman reboot/sequel, too? He'd make that ridiculous comic book figure into a great realistic Superman - a guy who would be from Earth and who couldn't fly. Realism rocks! Hacks like del Toro and Jackson should take note from the Nolan school and make "The Hobbit" realistic, with midgets and no dragons. For fantasy needs a healthy dose of realism, too.
-
First of all, lemme say something about what Harry posted. Harry is an @$$hole. His opinions are always compromised. Iron Man was incredible but it's not as good as BB. Iron Man is an origin story with nothing original. Anyways, let's get down to business. I am not saying who I am, but I am going to give away sum spoilers on this one. The trailer was designed for the public at large. Although it pays homage, this movie is in no way like '89 Batman. You have heard this before so lemme say it again. This movie is a very complicated crime drama. The Joker is a major component, but he's not the heart of the movie. The movie is based around Batman and Harvey Dent's war on Gotham crime. Batman is still what this movie revolves around. There are other major criminals in this film, most notably Eric Roberts crime boss character. Harvey Dent starts targetting his crime family and royally pisses him off. Harvey really strays from the Joker. It's Eric Roberts character who turns Harvey into TwoFace with the gasoline. Batman goes vigilante crazy after the Joker does kill Rachel. That's why you see Gordon smash the Bat signal and have to be restrained. Batman COMPLETELY subverts the law in an effort to stop the Joker's madness. His conflict with Jim Gordon is a major subplot. Heath Ledger delivers a knockout performance, but believe it or not, it's Aaron Eckhart's performance and his turn towards the end of the film that will knock your socks off. Christian Bale owns Batman/Bruce Wayne 8 days a week. Michael Caine ramps up Alfred and it's he who will garner any nominations if any are to be given out. To sum up, Bruce Wayne/Batman, Harvey Dent and Alfred are what this film revolves around. Once you see the movie, you will understand why Michael Caine got second billing. This is going to be a multifaceted affair. Things are deliberately being kept out of the trailer. They are banking that the viral marketing campaign and just the Batman brand will carry you to the theatre. This film is absolutely more EPIC than you can imagine. It will go down in history as one of the most brilliant crime dramas ever. The Joker and the explosions are secondary. Crisis of conscience, the fine line between good and evil, and the impact of our decisions are the central themes of this movie. You will believe me on July 18th!

...in a shop somewhere. Because if there's anything I love more than Nolan's realism, it's how he takes time to explain everything and show its origins in detail. That's wonderful and very healthy for imagination. I wish he'd remake that hack Leone's stupid "Man With No Name" trilogy and make it a "Man With A Name, Surname and Detailed Past History" one.

Did you just seriously compare Batman to LOTRs? .....Seriously?
-
I remember back in 1992 when BReturns was released Warner Bros. did the exact same thing with BM, Catwoman, and Penquin all on the poster at the same time. BReturns was quit disappointing back in 92' upon first viewing and isn't as fun or good as BM 1 but it brings back bad memories seeing the similar promotion done with Dark Knight.
-
LOTR is a fantasy world from the Middle Ages or some shit, with goblins and dwarves and elves. Batman exists in a fictional world based on our contemporary society. In which case the butler should be Mexican.
-
Have you ever seriously picked up a Batman comic in the last 20 years? The writers and illustrators have always gone for a certain sense of realism. Comparing Batman, a modern superhero comic, to LOTR, a straight fantasy novel, is just fucking straight up stupid.
-
You and this "realistic" comic book movie supporter posse take yourselves waaay too seriously. And if you bother to go back and read any of my previous posts on this subject, try and read between the lines with some sense about what I am saying. Since it seems that most cannot get what I'm saying topicly. And really.... You said "It will go down in history as one of the most brilliant crime dramas ever." C'mon man who not be named. Do you really think it's all that? And really...Why so serious?
-
I'm getting married soon and have to grow the fuck up. That's what I was told.
-
Ah, finally you admit it Underoos. <P> Everyone carry on with your day.
-
Part of my job is to read talk backs all day. The movie is all that. Im not kidding you. Everyone's concerns are not warranted. This movie is incredible! The marketing campaign is designed to be cartoonish. Once parents see this unedited film, the children will not be brought back for a second go around. This film is very dark and very paced.
-
Cheez wit!

fuck you

Those floating heads remind me too much of the Batman and Robin movie cover... as do the 50 credited names. I'm still optimistic. One thing I never liked about Nolan's take was the Rachel Dawes thing and the mulitple credited names. That's why the original Bats run sucked... the directors seemed to eager to include everyone from the Bat universe.
-
......does die. Im only telling you so you won't be turned away from the movie thinking she's in from beginning to end. The character is a necessary evil. Everyone hates her. It doesn't matter who potrays Rachel. The character sucks! I agree.....
-
No, what's funny is you calling Node a right winger.
-
Nolan's sense of pacing and storytelling is unrivaled among previous batman directors.
-
.....I work for a studio retard. How do you think I know who turns Harvey Dent?
-
"I get singled out for the other TBs." LOL...<p>BTW, I liked how you equated gotham night to the one child that was left behind in another talkback.. Nice work!
-
You said.".....I work for a studio retard." And you show your professionalism. You must work with Nolan.
-
because the source is lame to begin with. all comic book crap is gay and has never been entertaining as a film. ever. keep that geek shit in comic books where it belongs.
-
That Gotham is a pain the ass, but a likable troll who really wants some TB love. Glad to give it to him ... right up the ASS!!!!
-
There are no absolute rulebook to making a superhero movie. There are some rules to moviemaking in general as there is in most art, but even those rules can be broken with success. So rather than asking "why should it have injected realism", the only question I can think of is "why not?" There is no rule saying this can't or shouldn't be done. Batman is somewhat uniquely suited for this kind of treatment. Just because something exists in one known form doesn't preclude using it successfully in another, provided the artist/director is skilled enough to make the transition. This series is "Batman" visualized through the lens of a personalized street crime opera. I think you're getting hung up on what essentially is window dressing. Is it different? Yes. But different doesn't equate to bad.
-
I work for a studio so of course I am not a professional. And I never said I worked for Batman's studio. We are all one big happy family. That's why I got to see the movie and that's how info gets leaked.
-
Glad you could steer all of us in the right direction. <p>You do realize this is a fucking GEEK website, right?
-
I hear what you are saying. I really do. I just think...and I continue to say this over and over but you guys are so caught up in your bashing you aint' listnin'... DO NOT TRY AND MAKE A COMIC BOOK HERO SO GODDAMNED REALISTIC THEN SPLASH IT WITH SOME COMIC BOOKY STUFF TO REMIND US THAT IT'S JUST A COMIC FILM BUT I SHOULD TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. IT SHOULDN'T BE SLAPSTICK OR CORNY BUT CREATE A LIVING BREATHING WORLD THAT ESCAPES REALITY SO THAT I CAN BELIEVE THAT BATMAN LEARNS TO KICK A NINJA'S ASS IN THREE DAYS AFTER WATCHING RE-RUNS OF WALKER TEXAS RANGER. SIN CITY DID IT. 300 DID IT. PETER JACKSON'S LOTR DID IT. GET IT? CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WITH THE STORY FOR THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS. OTHERWISE COMIC MOVIES LOOK A BIT DUMB ON SCREEN.

I think we can get Queefer Bukkake to force sterilization on Danny boy. He'll crush his nutsack with a pair of bricks.
-
......be surprised at how good Eric Roberts protrays his character. His character is central to the movie.
-
They're not including the comic book stuff in a more realistic film for the purpose of reminding us that it's a comic book film - they're doing it simply because there are some things that no matter how much you try to explain things in a film for plausibility there will always be some things (especially when the source material is a comic book) that will always look that way. What the approach does, as someone else mentioned, is take the edge off of some of the crazier elements and allows you to focus on the story and characters and I think that was the primary purpose for the decision to tone it down. <br></br><br></br>I actually hated 300 and Sin City in spite of all the hyperstylized surroundings. And though I loved Lord of the Rings, I recognize that the setting for the story was a fantasy world, bearing no parallel to ours. Gotham by contrast is a city that was originally based on - in no smallpart - the cities of Chicago and New York. A closer parallel exists which makes the transition more do-able. The necessity to create a stylistically separate world is much less necessary to the story than Lord of the Rings. And we don't know how long it took Wayne to learn those ninja skills. It was a montage that could have lasted years. That's what's good about montages: they allow the viewer to experience in a few moments, the events of a much longer period of time that could never reasonably be filmed in their entirety.
-
.....is that it has a massive Empire Strikes Back cliffhanger ending.

No one wants to know what happens - that's why we pays good money to see it!!!!!!!!

I wasn't going to tell you what happens.

...........more about how central Eric Robert's mafia character is?
-
will be the worst part of this movie? Joker's looking phenonmenal, Eckhart looks to be playing Dent perfectly ... I think that's always been the problem with the Batman franchise: the villains are always more interesting than the hero.
-
Christian Bale isn't the best thing in the movie but he's on par with everyone else! The movie would not work without him.
-
..........steals the movie. You just can't use a whole lot of Alfred in your marketing!
-
It seems everyone around here hates comic book movies so why bother watching them? I mean, if you hated the Spider Man and X-Men trilogies, Batman Begins, Daredevil, The Punisher, etc., then why bother watching them anymore? You can almost hear people in this TB saying "I can't wait to watch Iron Man and The Dark Knight just so I can log onto AICN and tell a bunch of guys I don't know and will never meet what a steaming pile of turds they were."<p>I think torture porn is a festering pile of dogshit which I why I stopped after the first Saw. I'm not going to waste two hours of my life watching Hostel just so I can tell RogerMurtaughs_PenisPump what a crapfest it is.<p>And anyone that thinks Christian Bale is a bad actor must have been too busying blowing up the sex doll when American Psycho and The Prestige were on TV.

This movie is terrified of Iron Man and scared shitless of Indy. Maybe next year would've been better. When I want to see a two-bit crack whore in bad make-up I'll go downtown.

.......won't capitulate to the Joker at the meeting of all the Gotham gangs. That's why the Joker robs his bank in that bootleg clip and awakens a force. Eric Roberts character is responsible for the destruction of the Batmobile, the scarring of Harvey Dent, and is ultimately the one who kills the Joker when Batman can't do it because he wants redemption for his rampant vigilantism

Alright, I'll bite. Tell us everything you know about TDK and then we will all decide if you are full of shit or not. I'll even add a spoiler alert. "If anyone doesn't want to hear details of TDK, leave this talkback now." There. Go ahead.
-
didn't have such a cliffhanger ending. It had an unsettled ending, the rebels didn't win yet. But there was a sort of closure. <p><p> Now... LOTR as a movie. Had a really crap ending. NOTHING was resolved. Nothing was learnt other than that the hobbits were all gay.
-
I hated Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, Transformers, The English Patient, Million Dollar Baby, At World's End, Eragon, Crash, Elizabethtown and The Chronicles of Riddick as much as the next guy. But at least I rented them with the hope they would entertain. I didn't have a bucket of monkey feces ready to throw at the screen before the movie even began.<p>TB'ers should be more outraged about the cost of gas it's going to cost them to get to the theater than the movie they're going to see.
-
That's a good point about gas. Pretty soon they'll be releasing new movies on Pay-per-view because people can't afford to drive to the theater. Theater attendence will dwindle in the coming years.
-
We're ready. Go ahead.
-
For all you that don't wish to be even the slightest bit spoiled, don't read my post and get the fuck off the internet. <P> So, all the stuff I've heard says one of Maroni's guys (Rossi) scars Dent (much like TLH) So, you're saying that's false and it is actually Maroni himself?
-
That's what we thought. Another fanboy making shit up to fill in the blanks.
-
Sauron and Saruman were defeated, Aragorn made king, the Hobbits saved the Shire... what wasn't resolved?
-
You want to be an annoying little plant? That's fine, just let us know before you spill the beans on a major plot development.<br> <br> Although, Rickey is heavily skeptical about your plot claims. For example, you claim that in the movie, Joker forcefully takes over the mob. That's in direct contracts to the official teaser trailer where Alfred says to Bruce: "in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn't fully understand." So Rickey's calling BS on your claims. Fraud.
-
Don't worry about it. This guy is full of shit.
-
I say he's bi.
-
I think gotham_night is looking for some of that ass love you were talking about earlier.

Yes, he's alive. And in perfect hibernation. I need a fuckin beer, you know what kind.........
-
I think I'll tease his ass a little more before I give him some lovin'.
-
Tolkien said as much in the unreleased Lord of the Rings Companion.
-
with cliffhanger to boot? didn't they learn anything from the matrix and pirates sequels? if you want to make a trilogy, plan from the start. if you write a two-parter AFTER the success of the 1st movie, chances are they will shit on the coolness of the first movie. <p> just saying the trilogy won't feel as organic as if plan the three from the get go.
-
Am I allowed to like Burton's movies AND Nolan's? Can't we all just get along and remember B&R?
-
The rest of you, please fuck off with the pretending that Batman Begins isn't the best superhero film made thus far. Really, think of how embarassing it will be for you if anyone from your real life knew you were posting these "opinions".

The Biggest Difference Between Burton's and Nolan's Batman
by LaserPants
Nolan's Batman was good. Burton's Batman was terrible. End of story.
-
and all over my monitor at the sight of this. Sweet baby Jesus. 2008 is looking like somebody raided God's DVD collection.
-
The 3 character ones are horribly photoshopped...seems like a few different ppl worked on all this material and some with very little skill. Luckily we saw the kick ass stuff when the posters first started rolling out.
-
...it ain't the end of the story. You should probably consider rereading it.
-
Burton's 'Batman' was titled incorrectly. It should have been 'Tim Burton Presents Jack Nicholson as the Joker Dancing to Prince'. Seriously? Prince? Prince and Jack Nicholson? The movie was more about The Joker's little parade ended with Batman showing up. Hell, Batman didn't even do that much against him other than let him fall. It was a tragedy, not a superhero movie. Batman Begins isn't so great because it's a genesis, but because it is about the title character.
-
These are all really cool but I couldn't help but laugh at Eckhart's poster. It's like 2 badass ones showing significant symbols of their character then Dent chiming in "hey wait for me too, guys!!!" throwing in his badge.
-
thinks " It's not who I am underneath, but what I *do* that defines me.", is cheesy. Go fuck yourself you deluded prick. It's still better than The Penguin spouting some bullshit one liner every 5 fucking minutes. "Rats with wings do your thing"? Did you even watch Batman Returns?
-
is when they call another talkbacker the name of the person they are defending, I.E. calling a talkbacker Christian Bale. Yeah cause that makes a whole lot of sense, I'm sure Christian Bale is busy fighting with you trolls instead of banging Real life women , and just being a all around badass
-
"2008 is looking like somebody raided God's DVD collection." That sums up the reasons why I read the talkbacks.
-
I was wondering the same thing. I'd actually rather have one of Gordon than Dent, myself.
-
Apparently he goes to Hong Kong to retrieve some baddie who fled Gotham and is important to the mob.
-
that it can be included in this fantastic line-up for summer movies. There is something for everyone. How in the hell is Summer 2009 going to top this?
-
When "TDK" hits it will bring a huge backlash against the Nolan pictures, both of them. Batman Begins' only achievement was that it didn't totally suck, like B&R. But not sucking and ruling are two different things. I think Nolan's talky, literal and watered down version is about to be pimp slapped into oblivion.
-
"4th Pic Should Be An Obese MiddleAged Virgin Holding A Ticket" ahhaahahahhahha

Batman 89 didn't have to overcome the crappiness of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin ore relaunching an entire franchise after it was buried for a decade because someone thought bat-butt, robin with an earring, Two-Face with no development, Jim Carrey playing Joker/Riddler and Ahnold getting paid too much money to see "Freeze!" and "Chill!" 24/7 was the direction to go.

Show me reviews where people said that Batman 89 is the first Batman film since the Batman franchise was driven into the ground by the Batman 60s series or by Batman: The Movie (also from the 60s).

I'm so psyched for this movie that I have swung over into denial. Nothing can be as cool as this is looking.

All this criticism of excellent posters. I'm an award winning, trained graphic designer, and the head shots are fantastic. The Batpod is not to my liking, but it's still consistent with the blueish look they are going for. Everything has been consistent so far. Fuck the pseudo-intellectuals and know-it-alls.
-
Aren't you a pseudo-intellectual/know-it-all? You sound that way from your post.
-
Find you reviews? It is a fact that was the first Batman movie after the 60s series and that it had to change a lot of people's thoughts about Batman that were based on that series. I mean, are you stupid? Are you lame? What's your problem? No, screw those questions, and just explain to me the premise of your post so I can understand what argument you were trying to make?
-
Wow. You must be new here. People don't come here for intellectual conversations.
-
Well, gee, I don't know, I mean, there could be no conceivable way that Batman could have evolved from the 60s to the late 80s. In other words, Batman.... wasnt..... bogged..... down...... by...... the....... 60s....... tv....... show..... Got it? No reviews from anyone I've seen said well Tim Burton's Batman brought Batman to the big screen after a 20 year hiatus because the 60s tv show and film helped kill the franchise. Begins had people saying that it had to recover from a 10 year hiatus because Batman Forever and Batman and Robin killed the franchise. In summation, Batman 89 not bogged down by 60s tv show and film. Begins was bogged down by Batman and Robin and Batman Forever. Durrr, hope dat was easy enuf fo you to understand.
-
Love it
-
Geez, you are one funny fucker. One of those "What's good for the goose is NOT good for the gander" deals. Okay- so there was evolution of the Batman character between the 60s and the 80s that did not involve shows or movies, BUT- There were no batman comics or shows between B&R and BB? Geez, you're dumb. B89 was such a success because people were like "wow, this way different and more sophisticated from the Adam West show!" Similarly, BB is well regarded because it was better than B&R. Both had over come the last major iteration, but the reason BB wasn't the smash B89 was is because people were already used to a darker batman because of the Burton films. It wasn't as revolutionary. It just merely helped get the franchise back on track. Durr, hope u didnt hurt ur brane on dat one.
-
Yeah, cause we all know that the cartoons and comic evolution of Batman from late 90s to mid 2000s was more of a dramatic shift than Batman's evolution from the 60s to the late 80s. The very reason that you state BB didn't do as well (because people were accustomed to a darker Batman) is the same reason that Batman 89 wasn't bogged down by the 60s Batman series and film.
-
It took itself seriously,as in an "adult superhero flick". Look at FF flicks, they do not take it seriously. Ang Lee understood this and gave his best effort at an interpretation knowing, if you do not take this seriously and make it nothing but jokes, what do you expect from fans? The anomaly is Raimi's Spider Man because he, through his art was able to make the goofiness fitting in those flicks. Back on topic, the only thing I could even consider arguable between Burton and Nolan's interpretation is the design and cinematography choices. To each their own.
-
is an argument that will go on forever. But this is the question. What if Nolan had done the equivalent of Begins in 1989? Now I know that Begins was specifically made to wash the stench off of the previous franchise, but it could have still been an origin story done by Nolan. I would bet it wouldn't have done well, just like I don't think a Burton Batman would work today. Sometimes movies succeed or fail based on the time period alone. And this was the 80's we are talking about.
-
Okay. I see the problem now. My whole point is that BB wasn't bogged down for the reasons you claim it is. You're making excuses for the film. "Ooh, people were still jaded from B&R." please. BB just failed at being the kind of Batman movie that people good get behind. It was just for fans. and not in a good way.
-
I think an '89 Nolan BB would not have gone over as well as Burton's did. Mostly for these reasons: Lamer plot, lamer villain, and it's condescending attitude to the audience. It was the Burton films that treated the audience as adults, not Nolan's. Nolan's film treated the audience like they were teenagers: ready for harder stuff but still needing talking down to and overt literalness.
-
Making excuses for the film? Ha! Batman 89 was essentially form and visuals over story. Batman Begins was both. Fans and critics agree that Begins was better Batman 89. (If you choose to debate this point, look at ratings on IMDB, yahoo, and other internet sites. If you choose to bring money into this, then by God, Titanic was better than any movie ever made.)
-
I really don't get why you think Nolan's film treated the audience like they were teenagers while the Burton films treated the audience as adults. Please explain more than what you have above.
-
should I too? Fans, fuck em: they're usually stupid. And critics can be just as guilty of revisionism.<br> <br> Facts is facts: the Burton films handled the Batverse with greater depth, subtlety and wit. Let me give you an example. Why does Bruce Wayne dress up as a bat? Begins answer: First Alfred literally asks him and Bruce literally says "to share my dread." Also, Bruce makes a ponderous speech about how a man can be silenced and destroyed, but a symbol is incorruptible. All fine and literal. How does B89 explain it? By having Vicki Vale and Knox wander into Bruce's armor collection and make fun of it. Most audiences (and you I bet) just react and Knox's level. "Ha Ha! looks at this sill stupid spoiled rich boy and his weird armor collection! It's so silly! Ha Ha Ha!" But if you're paying attention, it says so much about Bruce: That he's been collecting and studying armor, images, symbols, all to figure out how to recreate something imposing and symbolic in a modern world. It says what Begins said in a non literal and more subtle way AND gives Bruce more credit: He at least studies these things and figures it out. BB Bruce is only really regurgitating what Ra's taught him. And the irony of that is never really explored.
-
See my above post. Here's another example of Begins telling and B89 (or in this case 92,) showing. BB has Bruce go gadget shopping and grift the Batmobile from Fox. But Keaton's Bruce clearly built the entire Batcave himself, which makes him that much smarter and more driven. How do I know he did it himself? Because he's repairing the Batmobile all by himself in Batman Returns! One key scene of him doing that is all I need: Batman did it himself. BB is in a rush to explain it all and take all the credit away from Bruce. I mean, what does Bruce even do himself in BB? He gets his gadgets from Fox, his morality from his dad and his Methods from Ra's. BB's bruce is literally only Batman because he has the money to buy the gadgets to be Batman. Keaton's Batman could have probably pulled it off even if he didn't have all that money.
-
OK, fair enough. But there has to be more than the armor collection scene and a sentence spoke by Bale to prove Nolan's film treated the audience like they were teenagers while the Burton films treated the audience as adults.
-
greenstyle92's argument poses some good points, but it is a shame he declares anyone in disagreement as a "fucking lemming". Sort of discredits reading anything afterwards. btw, I love both Burton and Nolan's takes on this comic.
-
I'm afraid you may be reading too much into B-89. Sometimes, I go out to the garage and work on my motorcycle. That doesn't mean I built the motorcycle or the garage. The fact is, in B-89 nobody knows where he got the stuff. In fact, I think that was the joke behind "Where does he get all those wonderful toys?" made by Nicholson.
-
In Begins everything is spoken and explained and very literal and very surface level. BB ponders if bruce's quest is revenge or justice. And it puts it in those terms. Bruce's revenge doesn't pan out so he tries Justice. But Burton's two films are all about this question. And it definitely seems to question whether being Batman is itself self indulgent and self destructive."Why do you do this?" "I don't know, because I have too." "I have no desire to spend my few remaining years mourning the loss of old friends. Or their sons."
-
It was mostly in response to Err, who himself is arrogant and insulting. Yeah, I've tried in the past to be the polite one posing the intelligent points. But folks like Err don't respond to it. It usually takes and equal show of asshole force. But I welcome intelligent and polite debate too.
-
Keaton's Batmancould have built an rocket-powered armor car with two m-60 machine guns even if he didn't have money. Who is this fucking bozo?
-
I fully appreciate the working on your cycle doesn't mean you built it metaphor, and it's a nice one. But allow me to respond: The Batmobile and been 2/3's destroyed, so he was doing more than changing his oil. And plus, I think enjoying a film also means on picking up on things that aren't clearly spelled out. I don't absolutely know Batman built the batcave and batmobile himself. But I can recognize patterns. In the Burton movies, Batman clearly came up with the Joker antidote himself and clearly did his own detective work. The armor scene indirectly alludes to the idea that he made the bat suit- and came up with and studied the concepts and archetypes underpinning it-himself. And he's repairing a 2/3s destroyed Batmobile, again, himself. So, yeah, I think there's enough evidence to believe he built the batcave and batmobile himself.
-
Burton's Batman didn't explain anything because it didn't care. And also, the movie's were about set design. I have never heard anyone claim that Burton's Batman substance...probably because their isn't any.
-

Yes, you have good points. But really, Nolan was trying to go on a whole different route than Burton's Batman and we will never really know how Nolan's would have turned out if it wasn't for the previous franchise. That's why this is an argument that could go on forever.
-
No substance? Never heard anyone claim they have substance? Sigh. this is why I'm not so impressed by fan opinions. They can't understand a character without having everything explained to them. Wow. Watch Batman Returns again. Every villain is a twisted version of Batman himself. the parallels between Batman and Penguin and the implications there-of are stunning. or did that, "You're just jealous because I'm a genuine freak but you have to wear a mask" "You may be right" exchange confuse you?
-
rereading my post, I mis-worded it and it looked like I was accusing you of making fun of people who think. That's not what I intended. I was talking about BB's Bruce Wayne, who made fun of Fox for figuring out the fear toxin. Again, my apologies on that one.
-
He only took orders from ninjas while he was out in the wilderness finding his own purpose (knowing he could not be fighting for revenge but something more). After that, he discarded the notion. And stood up to the ideals. One of the reasons Ra's hated seeing Bruce give it all up. "You were my greatest student."
-
Depth in Burton's Batman? Maybe a tad...only a tad...but Returns? Pure nonsense. You were high when you watched it right? I don't deny the contribution Burton did with Batman, but Batman Returns was pure silliness. I understand your love for Burton, but even Burton has come out and said that Nolan did it right. Nolan is doing it right, Burton admitted the studio had their own ideas on how the franchise should go when he got to the helm and basically Burton appeased them. He did a mix of the TV show and threw some gothic visuals in. Burton never read Batman until the Killing Joke, which he admitted was the best comic he had ever read. I am sorry, Nolan has the mantle now, deal with it.
-
Let me just concede that I guess I like the Burton films better. Begins doesn't suck per se, I just don't think it's nearly as good as most people claim it is. And I claim that the Burton films have a lot of depth that unfortunately most fans don't seem to pick up on. (and I HATE that someone like colonel would claim it has no depth. That's anti-intellectualism at it's finest. So for the Soylent's claim that the movie should just be for fun, I'm afraid that's neither Burton nor Nolan. That's Schumacker, and I still find Forever watchable as just a light nonserious take on Batman. B&R is just wretched though.)
-
You had good ideas above and now I'm just curious. Of all of the Batman villains,(Joker,Two Face,Catwoman)the Penguin is not one that springs to mind as a villain that is a twisted version of Batman himself. Why do you say that?
-
But I would like to see the article Burton admits all that. Link please?<br> <br> I view Batman as not about "right" or "not right." but more about what works. And maybe Nolan is a more faithful adaption. But I think the Burton films are more interesting. And I definitely TOTALLY disagree that Returns was pure silliness. There's just too much going on, too much subtext, too much it has to say about people with duality and how people handle tragedy for it to be a coincidence and all in my head. May I humbly suggest you give it another look?
-
You have a character that is a circus freak that in no way resembles the character from the comic but more like Lon Chaney from London After Midnight. His lines are horrid and really he is basically brings more chuckles than dread. You have the Catwoman, who looked hot, but in no way resembled the character from the comic or her origin. I mean come on, falling from a high rise and being brought back to life by cats? The Pequin running for office with the support of Max Shrek whose name came from a silent screen star and really Walken was incredibly underused in the movie. The movie was more comedy than action and was more the TV show than the comic. I actually think Burton's Batman is iconic. Returns is crap. Begins, that is Batman and gratefully gave us the Batman I read.
-
Burton never read Batman until the Killing Joke, which he admitted was the best comic he had ever read. So that's not saying much. That's funny.

I'm wondering why, if the Burton Batman is so interesting and if Burton was, as you contend, leaving more to the imagination because he respects his audience more, then why does the Joker totally dominate the screen time? You're making a huge leap by connecting the armor to the design of the Batsuit. What any weenie could figure out is that Bruce is interested in chivalry, nobleness, and heroism...much like a knight...a dark knight, if you will. That scene in the movie plays as such: Knox is established further as supposed "comic relief" and the audience sees Bruce's armor collection, which he has because he's battling crime as a knight/warrior. The psychology of Bale's Batman if so much further developed than Burton's. You know how I know? Because his childhood is shown. I don't remember all of 89 Batman, but the only thing I recall about Bruce's reasons for choosing a bat for a symbol is "They're great survivors." If you went in cold to this movie, not knowing the first thing about Batman, you would think to yourself, "A bat? What a stupid fucking choice for a motif. Wolves are better survivors and much cooler," or something like that. Know what else you would think? "Why is this short, boring, divorced high school teacher uncle-looking guy taking screentime away from that goof clown murderer/gangster? He's much more interesting." You know why? Because Batman in Burton's universe is boring. Bale's Batman had a traumatic experience with bats, freaked out because bats which got his parents killed...you know, his father...his hero and moral guide. But, I regress; Burton showed that Bruce had a bunch of armor, so he's more developed and Burton is treating the audience with more respect because he's letting greenstyle92 make inferrences. Good point, man. Let me asking you: Where did you get your philosophy degree? Because with the level of critical and logic thinking that you're displaying, you must be, at the very least, an adjunct professor of philosophy somewhere.
-
On the other hand, Returns had more character development than the others. Even if it wasn't the characters we were used to.

http://www.batman-on-film.com/burton-talks-batman-in-amsterdam_4-13-08.html The Christopher Nolan movie I thought was actually really good. He really captured the ‘real’ spirit that these kind of movies are supposed to have nowadays. When I did BATMAN 20 years ago, in 1988 or something, it was a different time in comic book movies. You couldn't go into that ‘dark side’ of comics yet. The last couple of years that has become acceptable and Nolan certainly got more to the root of what the Batman comics are about.”
-
In general, the Penguin is not. But in Returns, he definitely is. In Returns, Penguin suffers a variant on Batman's tragedy: He looses his parents. But it's a twisted version: His parents discard him. Like Batman, Penguin descends beneath the world we know to a subterranean lair, where he identifies with an animal. He eventually represents himself to Gotham as a hero, someone out to just get to know his parents. (He visits his parents grave and leaves roses there, practically a parody of the equivalent scene in B89.) But Penguin is not truly a hero, his true motives are more sinister: He has identified with the aggressor, and intends to kill all first born sons of Gotham. This casts an interesting light on Batman. True Batman is not trying to hurt anyone, (but criminals,) but his motives aren't selfless. Both movies explore that he's Batman for his own selfish reasons related to the loss of his parents and his own quest may be self destructive. But Batman does ultimately prevail on Moral Grounds. There is a hint of selfishness to Batman's quest but more than enough selflessness to balance this: That's why Penguin's attempt to discredit Batman fails but Batman discrediting Penguin succeeds. Batman better stands up to the scrutiny. It's all very interesting, and there's more to say, but that's just off the top of my head.
-
You're totally right about that exchange. The parallels between The Penguin, an abandoned, deformed sociopath that spent his whole life in the sewers and Batman, a wealthy, neurotic yet noble man who grew up as a priveledged lad to a man in control of a multi-billion dollar company who bags women who look like Kim Basinger are uncanny. It sure is a slippery slope from billionaire crimefighter to deformed sewer-dwelling wanna be child murderer.
-
Burton: "He (Nolan) really captured the ‘real’ spirit that these kind of movies are supposed to have nowadays. When I did BATMAN 20 years ago, in 1988 or something, it was a different time in comic book movies. You couldn't go into that ‘dark side’ of comics yet. The last couple of years that has become acceptable and Nolan certainly got more to the root of what the Batman comics are about.” <p> Now I agree with some other poster in some other Batman thread who had declared that Nolan's BB success had something to do with the time he made the film. But despite the time, BB has become.. timeless. It has incredible replay value, moreso than any "superhero movie" I know of.
-
Seriously, they go to great lengths to show that Bruce Wayne doesn't kill (i.e. Falcone) in the first flick... then they say "Fuck it!" and saddle his 'pod' (whatever) with two machine guns. What a fucking joke. Nolan's got about as much vision as a dead hamster forgotten and left to rot in its cage.
-
Wow. That's pretty good. Well put. I'll never look at Returns the same way again.
-
Isn't developed at all except what you make up in your mind. He's not on screen enough. There is no exploration of any themes at all. None. Those movies are excuses for set designs and Burton's made-up stories that have little to nothing to do with Batman.
-
At least there's something we can all agree on. The Batpod deal looks like ass.
-
This picture says it all... http://tinyurl.com/3t7gk5 If you don't agree you're nuts! In 2-3 years I can see her donning the catsuit and goggles.
-
By that same reasoning Daniel Plainview isn't well developed in "There Will Be Blood" because he rarely speaks and even more rarely talks about what drives him and what his views on the Oil industry, family, and religion are. He sure is boring.

At least there's something we can all agree on. The Batpod deal
by Silverglade
"At least there's something we can all agree on. The Batpod deal looks like ass."<p> Unless... the tumbler gets so smashed all Bruce has left is a combat bike designed by Lucious as a means of viable warfare vs armed criminals.
-
Fuck, is the batmobile going to get destroyed? Now that IS dipping into Burton's Batman.
-
So, what have you published?
-
Are you saying the Batpod looks cool or something?
-
Plainview is developed because he's the center of the movie. There's hardly a scene in the movie that isn't dominated by him. And there's that whole, "There's a competition in me," speech...and the whole disregarding his injuried son to watch the plumes of oil fueled flames lick the dark desert sky...but other than that, so much is left unsaid. Especially the whole, "Say that you're a false prophet and god is a supertstition" but with the Elmer Gentry-esque preacher. I couldn't decide is Plainview liked Christianity or not from that scene. Nice analogy, boy-o.
-
So how about it? You said you were a publisher, what have you published?
-
It's "Occam's Razor"... but something tells me I'm wasting my time in correcting you.
-
and my posts are chockfull of typos tonight. Egads.
-
That is, Evan Rachel Wood dressed as Catwoman, mewling and purring in ecstacy, as I pound her sweet tight pussy.
-
It's like looking out at the city just as the plane comes crashing through the glass. Batman jumping out reminds us of those who lept to their doom to escape the fiery wreckage... in fact I believe this billboard poster is a precursor to the firey plane shaped bat wreckage of the other one! Shame on you Nolan! SHAME on you WB! SHAME ON YOU EVERYONE!!!
-
Dude, are you at the right talkback?
-
Je. Sus. Christ. Were did that come from?
-
I didn't really understand the connection between the Batmobile on rooftops and choosing the simplest solution when everything is equal. Sooooo...errr, yeah.
-
Yes, Daniel is in all throughout the movie, and that helps. Where as Burton's Batman does not dominate his own films. On the other hand, I would argue that the films are structured so that we learn a lot about Batman by studying his villains, particularly in Returns. Consider Batman's "We are the same" admission to Catwoman. And Batman being in it less was a conscious decision by Burton. interviews on The Batman Returns special edition disc indicate he didn't think Batman would want to be very visible or talk about himself much. He's a hidden, shadowy character, which is why Burton had to do it indirectly. Like the armor collection or the comparison to Catwoman and Penguin. <br> <br> But my point about the Plainview metaphor is that it's not all about what Daniel says about himself but by studying his reactions. It goes unsaid. Where as BB is just so damn talky. Everyone is always breaking out into speeches about revenge and justice and what motivates them and why they do what they do. I mean, c'mon Nolan. You can show us these things, not tell us. Burton showed us.
-
That dude's either drunk or at the wrong talkback. Sounds like he was trying to yell at Underroos like everybody else does.
-
Ledger's Joker is more interesting in the trailers than Jack's Joker was in the movie. I'm sold. The whole, "This city deserves a better class of criminal" riff in the trailer shows an arrogance that Jack's Joker didn't have. Sure, he was arrogant in a "I'm gonna say that I'm beautiful and stylish even though I'm deformed" but Ledger's Joker is saying, "I'm taking it to a whole new level...just watch". What an asshole.
-
I don't agree with the "lensed mask" idea for Batman. In the comics, yeah, the eyes go blank but it's USUALLY clear you could see Batman's eyes, they weren't literally lenses. I'm also for seeing the eyes because it helps the actor emote and connect with the audience. Yeah, spider-man used the lenses and it looked cool, but then Raimi had Spidey yank his mask off or lose his mask at every possible opportunity, which I really found annoying.
-
What are your thoughts about the love triangle in TDK between Bruce, Dent, and Rachel?
-
was fucking EMBARRASSING!! And what was up with the gothic circus troop? You guys bitch about things being 'gay' all the time, but that was OK? And Walken as "Max Schrek" was also RIDICULOUS and had no precedent in the comics. About the only good thing was Pffeifer as Catwoman, and even that had some REALLY awkward stuff (esp. with the cats in the beginning). Burton's vision of Batman was almost as horrible as the Schumacker crud that everyone (rightly) despises.
-
I think you're reaching, like the people who read American Psycho and think that he's making things up, but whatever. You have obviously splashed your chips in the Burton Batman pot, and that's all well and good. I feel the same way about Anton Chigurh from No Country. The Coens didn't tell us, they showed us. What with us knowledge of caring for flesh wounds and his improvised sling, we can plainly see that he is killing to fill the void that dropping out of med school has left in his soul. So easy to see because the Coens treated the audience like adults.
-
NO RESEMBLANCE TO THE PENGUIN WHATSOEVER!!!
-
I can't really say anything to that. In truth, I like Returns better than B89. I think Jack's Joker wasn't perfect but better than most give him credit for. He was basically a guy starved for attention, making this guy both scary but kind of pathetic at his core. That is why his battles with Batman were more about One-upsmanship and getting attention back on himself. Yes, I did say above that I don't expect much from TDK but I'm not comfortable yet comparing the performances based merely on the trailers. But I will admit Ledger's Joker COULD turn out to be something special. And if TDK really does turn out well, I'd be willing to admit my problems with Begins may have more to do with Goyer than Nolan, which I suspect but can't prove until TDK comes out. So there, I can't do much to comment.
-
It is a fact that the lenses on Spidey's mask were there because Peter was afraid at first and didn't want his enemies to see fear in his eyes. That is SM canon, it was talked about in like the first issue of SM back in the 60's.
-
Bob Kane himself said that he's supposed to have lenses. Adds to the urban legend shit.
-
again, I'm hesitant to comment too much on TDK yet. But from what I saw, I'm nervous. I'm afraid they'll be dipping into the same old Superman Spiderman thing of "I can't be with you because I'm a Superhero right now, but hey! I don't want to see you with another guy! Not fair! Maybe I don't want to be a Superhero anymore!" kind of deal. I think Batman's true tragic love is Catwoman. They can't come together because one or the other would have to compromise themselves, change there nature and who they are-to come together, but they really are perfect for each other. And that WAS in Returns.
-
...Batman and Robin ooze.
-
Herb, I agree that Spidey is meant to have lenses. All I mean by is by giving Spidey lenses WHICH I AGREE IS WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE they also created a problem of having Spidey not be able to emote, hence Raimi having to pull his mask off all the time. Because I don't agree that lenses are essential in Batman, I'm glad they let it go.<br> <br> Colonel: I'll admit that Kane did say that at one point. But, that hasn't been universally followed. I remember some 70s and 80s comics (death in the family in particular) where they did draw in Batman's eyes in certain panels. So I think the case can be made that not every one agrees that Batman should have lenses.
-
I gotta be up early in the morning. But Herb and Colonel, it's been great talking and you guys really had me on the run and really challenged me to defend my opinion, and heard me out. I appreciate that. Hopefully run into you guys later!
-
Christ, when I saw that I thought I was watching Spiderman 2 all over again. It's exactly the same scene. God I wish they would get rid of that whole subplot.
-
1.) I'm back from work and now at home but it's nice to see green bash me for my opinion. <br><br> 2.) Burton's comments on Nolan being able to delve into the darker side of comics is somewhat ridiculous. I have to say that the dark side of comics was ushered in around 1986 (3 years before Batman was released and probably a year or two before it started shooting). It was ushered in with Alan Moore's Watchmen.
-
I think TDK is going to turn out to be the greatest comic book movie ever made.
-
So how about it? You said you were a publisher, what have you published?

Herb, the new version of the character is a lot of fun. Mike Allred did the re-design I believe. She wears goggles, still has the skin-tight outfit, leaps off buildings, etc. What's not to like there? She has always been the perfect foil for Batman.

Dude, I'm sorry. I don't mean to rip you apart, I'm just getting tired and flaky.

Also, after wathcing that trailer, I kinda wish for a return to a more Gothic, less reality based Batman. Gotham City, though impressive in Batman Begins, was a far more sinister and 'interesting' place in Burton's 2 movies.

about what a flaming bag of ham fisted shit "Crash" was with a roomful of people who loved it. Other than wasting 5 hours of my time and a perfectly good beer buzz, I realized debating about whether or not a movie is any good for longer than it takes a 17 year old boy to get off is pointless. This belief was recently reinforced when Roger Ebert named "Juno" as his favorite movie of 2007. I don't hold Ebert in the same high regard as most others because I think his track record is spotty at best, but the man does know how to write up a review.<p>My favorite film of 2007 is King of Kong, for Ebert it was Juno and for some poor misguided TB'er who threw it out there last week, it was Transformers. You throw the three of us in the same room with a case or twelve of Corona for 5 hours and we'll get nowhere but drunk.

For me, throw in Hellboy 2, and to a certain extent X-files 2.
-
I agree with those who wrote that the eye makeup hurts the believability of the movies. For once, I would like to see Batman wear the white glowing lenses so iconic to his character. ALLEGEDLY, he wears them for one scene in this film. <P>With regard to the posters, the motorcycle one does look like it belongs on a toy package, as it's obviously not even a photograph. And as for the others, I don't like them. Why is the Joker holding a Dark Knight movie trading card instead of a burning bat signal or a prancing joker? Are they trying to tell us that Joker shops at Walmart? And, why is Dent even in there?
-
picture. But I didn't know Batman could even go to Hong Kong. I thought Gotham, and Batman in general existed outside of our world.
