The Sleestaks From The LAND OF THE LOST Movie Look...Surprisingly Sleestaky!!
Merrick here...
USA Today has our first look at Sleestaks from the Ferrellfying of LAND OF THE LOST.
The plot involves three adults (not a dad and two kids as on TV) accidentally thrust into a realm ruled by dinosaurs, monkey-men called Pakuni and the murderous Sleestak.
[EDIT]
One difference: Instead of toting crossbows, the Sleestak draw quills from their spines and fire them like arrows.
...says THIS ARTICLE in USA Today.
There are a few more details in the article, including word on director Brad Silberling's fight to realize the Sleestaks via "man in suit" methodology, rather than going with CGI creatures.
The Sleestaks from the series looked like this:

The Sleestaks from the new movie? Look like this:

Hmmmm...even the backgrounds look the same?
LAND OF THE LOST hits theaters next Summer.

but this movie is going to be a 2-2.5 at best
-
Two words: Will Ferrell
-
I wouldn't mind if they went with the old claymation dinos in this one.
-
It's not like this was a great show to start with but Ferrill has been suckin lately. I like Will Ferrell and I liked this show as a kid. I have no idea what I am trying to say...I'll rent it.
-
I can hoist a flag on the pole I'm sporting. This just might not suck. Bring on Chaka Kahn!

Obama! Your Chickens (sic) Sleestacks have come home to roost!!!!!!!!!

and firing them like arrows.
-
Anyone else notice the profile of a Sleestack monument in the background?
Anyway, this looks and sounds like a really lame movie. I probably won't even bother to catch it on DVD.
-
Will Ferrells man babies.
-
Can't wait for this!! Can... wait, I was going to say can Adam McKay save John's career as the King of old outdated show remakes? But Adam McKay, who showed surprisingly very talanted direction in Talladega Nights. Probably one of the best directed big budget comedies since Ghost Busters, I mean I wasn't a huge fan of that movie, but I really dug the racing sequences, I think they broke some record for flipping cars? So I thought maybe Adam McKay can make a good movie Land of the Lost, since it going to be a pretty big movie. He is more early Reitman less Shadyac and Oedekerk. Come to find out that its being directed by Brad Silberling (is he the first director to direct Carry and the John?). And his movies are boring to the nth degree. Though his best movie to date is Casper, which was an update of an outdated old tv show? Then again I was like 12 or something when I saw that movie last. Probably sucks now.
-
Glad they are going the guys in suits route.
-
fuck him and his forced, obnoxious "style." no, saying things louder and repeating it doesn't make it more funny. Dane Cook is his protege.
-
bring on ENIK!!
-
I will give Will Ferrell his humor back. *I have spoken*
-
The Sleestacks need to be wearing black leather. Otherwise this will suck.
-
...the nozzle!
Just kidding...
-
Greatest earthquake ever known.
-
What is really disappointing about evolution is that instead of the dinosaurs evolving into beings like the Sleestaks and the Silurians, they evolved into chickens. Epic fail.
-
...will show up in the upcoming A-Team movie.(Since Hannibal wore one in one episode of the original show.)
-
Yummy!
-
I don't like the idea of remaking this as a farce, same with $6 Million Man. Why not just play it straight like the new BSG? They could have made this "serious" with some comedic elements, rather than just playing it for laughs. I'll see it, but I don't have high hopes.
-
How fucking good would that be?
-
Sucks...sorry..had to say it. I think he's good on his own but these formulaic comedies he's been doing for seemingly forever are just old and boring hat at this point. He either plays hyper-cocky or hyper-pathetic but it's basically the same thing over and over and of course...he's got to be half naked...he's got to scream and yell....he's got to have some weird hair. How many sports movies with the exact same plot..just a different sport. I'm not saying there's no laugh-worthy moments...there always is...that's why it's not complete shite like "Date Movie" which seems like its a full sized production movie made up completely on the spot.

now that we know how the Sleestak look...how will they sound? That's equally important but the most important thing about Land of the Lost...who's Chakka??

Who's Chakka?

Chakka?
-
If John C. Reilly and David Koecher are the other two guys on the expedition I will be all about this movie!
-
Chakachakachakachaka Chana Khan Chana Khan, Chana Khan, Chana Khan, Chana Khan let me rock ya Let me rock ya Chana Khan Let me rock ya 'cause all I wanna do Chana Khan let me rock ya Let me rock ya Chana Khan Let me rock ya 'cause I feel for you Chana Khan won't ya tell me what you want to do Will you feel for me the way I feel for you Chana Khan let me tell ya what I wanna do I wanna love ya wanna hug ya wanna squeeze ya too Let me take you in my arms, let me thrill ya with my charms Chaka 'Cause you know that I'm the one to keep you warm Chaka I'll make you more than just a physical dream I wanna rock you, Chaka Baby, cause you make me wanna scream Let me rock you, rock you
-
Thank god they got rid of the kids. no kids and no CGI sleestaks? This could actually be good. But who are the two adults besides Will Ferrell? I hope not anyone from the Apatow camp.
-
an AT&T ad. More bars even in the Land of the Lost.
-
Sleestack number 3. Alas, I died in the movie. Trampled by a retarded baby brontosaurus named Dopey.
-
The Land That Time Forgot, etc. This looks that kind of old Hammer Films / American International stuff. If they put this on at the Drive-In as part of a triple feature, I'm there!
-
people who like this? gonna get laffed at!
-
The lizard people there had some of the best makeups/animatronics I've ever seen on tv. Shame they didn't go that route.
-
It's only one pic, I know, but I'm glad the director is going for non-CG Sleestaks. I'm sure they'll be augmented with partial CG in the film, but this is the right directorial attitude, in my opinion.
I still can't believe they're making a film from "Land of the Lost." Cracks me up.
-
One of his funnier skits on SNL.
-
Because that's going to be the level of humor in this waste of money.

It's funny. The fanboys bitch about practical effects over CGI.
by Novaman5000
And then when they get it, they say what everyone else has been saying for years: "It looks fake!" The problem with rubber suits is that they can't replicate the muscle/skin movements of a living breathing creature, so they come across as just what they are: Men in suits. To me, a perfect effect would feature practical effects to give the creature a physical presence, and then CG layered on top of that to give the creature realistic movements to make them believable. Blinking, nostrils flaring, Facial motions, etc. That's the way to go. You shouldn't get rid of practical effects completely, but you have to realize that when CGI is good, even the best rubber suits can't compare.
-
why not go with traditional old school stop motion animation. Jim Danforth and Dave Allen nailed the tone perfectly for Ringo Starr's Caveman. Why wouldn't that approach work for this?
-
Shame on you Sid & Marty.
-
HEHEHE.
-
Am looking forward to this. I mean, for those bitching, it's Land of the Lost for christsakes. Will Ferrell is always Will Ferrell, save for the excellent Stranger Than Fiction, and I'm OK with that. He does it well. I think they should re-image more campy crap from the 70s and 80s. That's a goldmine that will keep on giving.
-
I was really afraid to look at this image, but it is exactly what Sleestaks should look like today.
-
Doesn't matter which one.
-
We can only hope...
-
I might be one of the only people who loved the Series of Unfortunate Events movie... I think it was a mistake to go with all adult actors, but we'll see how it goes.
-
No Chaka, it's not magic, it's a picture of me at the Cleveland Indians game. YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK !!!!!!!!
-
I always wanted to start a punk band called "The Sleestacks." If only I knew how to play an instrument....
-
If you look closely, John Salley is right next to him.
-
Those rubber 'staks are too dark green! It needs to be more of a St. Patrick's Day green, not Pinesol green! Those uni-horns remind me of that metrosexual uni-horn hair lots of 90210 boys are wearing these days, where they somehow swoop their hair up. Me, I wouldn't know about that. I'm too busy doing manly things to notice how my hair is worn, or whether it's on fire or mottled in blood from a vicious headwound.
-
Fa-Fa-Fo-high.
-
and set. Better than I hoped for. But I really don't like Wil Farrell, so I still don't have great hopes for the movie. It'll only work if it surprises people with more action/suspense/freaky pylon stuff and keeps the humor in check.
-
to get me on board with a LotL comedy starring Wil Farrel. Especially when (as I predicted) the three adults in the story will be Screw Up Wil Marshal, his secret love of his life and a pompous ass that always makes Will look stupid who will be eaten by a dinosaur at the end because of his own asshattery.

Not an acceptable tribute to a beloved childhood memory.
-
I just can't picture Will Ferrel in this though. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.
-
People will get offended because most of them are.
-
What's next Trix the rabbit the movie?
-
I know it can be done. I seem to remember a time when action/scifi/horror films were made without computer-generated monsters, cities, people, fire, or anything else. I also remember that all my favorite movies in these genres are from BEFORE the CGI revolution took off.

-
Just a comment about the nature of some of the fanboys on this site. Personally, I think they look just like the original ones, the problem is the original ones didn't look particularly good. These just look like more detailed rubber suits, and that hurts their look for me. I'm not really a fan of them as is, but maybe with some CGI augmentation they could be cool. I guess i'd have to see them in motion.
-
So lighten the fuck up.
-
DIRECTED BY TAKASHII MIIKE!!! WOOOOOT!!!
-
that is all
-
From the moment I heard Will Ferrell was attached to this project, I lost interest. Not that I'm a Ferrell-hater; far from it. I own Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Elf, Stranger Than Fiction & the Best of W.F. on S.N.L. on DVD. But his one television spoof movie, Bewitched, was horrible (two, if you count Starsky & Hutch), as are most T.V. spoof movies, Addams Family nonwithstanding. Now, seeing that they got the sleestaks right (updated enough to not look as cheap and cheesy as the original costumes, but overall faithful), it just pisses me off even more that this thing is probably going to be another inane piece of shit spoof. Plus, the original series was cheesy enough to be a self-parody anyway. But if you get past the cheap sets and costumes, bad acting, inept direction and laugh-out-loud special effects, there was a concept that had potential for a great summer blockbuster in the right hands. Oh, well; what do you do? That's Hollywood.

"Nice statue in the background. They worship themselves." So, what's your take on Mt. Rushmore. Just wonderin'.

The winner... CHIM CHIM!!! WOOOOT!

Bloody hell - thats the last ime I use the Lindsay Lohen Spellch
by Yeti
-
The last time I use the Lindsay Lohan Spellchecker.
-
...that will make a mockery of this big-screen adaptation.
-
will it have sleestak dogs?
-
Personally I think Gary Cole would make a great Marshall. Its just another excuse for Will Farell to wear a 70's FRO.
-
It probably won't be very good, but practical effects always catch my eye.
-
"I've abandoned my Sleestack!"
-
This is gonna be a crap-fest! Here's one instance where they SHOULD HAVE went with CGI! It's going to look cheesy as hell!
-
if it was just as bad as the original. It'll bring new meaning to 'audience participation' by forcing you to use your imagination to fill in for horribly cheesy effects work. Sigh... those were the days.
-
too many talkbackers dont have anything else to hate on today. Maybe another speed racer trailer will hit, and they'll forget all about this movie again.
If Ferrel plays it up straight, I'm watching this in the theater. If he plays this up for self-referential slap-stick, I'll watch it for free on TNT 5 months after its premier.
-
Will Ferrel should be played by a broom handle with a rainbow afro wig, a whoopee cushion, a pink garbage bag filled with oatmeal strapped to the handle, one of those singing mounted fish from 10 years ago...maybe some confetti or some plastic vomit. Seriously, would you even be able to tell the difference?
-
Action/comedy combo might just work. I just hope they can reign-in Will Ferrell a bit. He is a fan of the original series, so he might make this work and take it serious. But then again...
-
The Addams Family movies. I have'nt thought about those in years. I think they were great. Or they were at least the best TV spoof movies. At least I think.
-
Man, there were moments in the original series that creeped me out as a kid. And will Chaka speak authentic Pakuni? Hmmm??? If they screw this up i hope Pearl beats Will within an inch of his life.
