The Director Of CASINO ROYALE!! The Writer Of THE DEPARTED!! Mel Gibson Picks His First Starring Role Since 2002!!

Published at:  Apr 29, 2008 12:38:54 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Mel Gibson will star in “Edge of Darkness,” a big-screen adaptation of the 1985 BBC miniseries. Martin Campbell (“GoldenEye,” “Casino Royale”), who directed the miniseries, will direct the movie version from a screenplay by William Monahan (“The Departed”).

It’s Gibson’s first starring project since “Signs” and “We Were Soldiers,” both of which came out in 2002.

Variety describes thusly:

Gibson will play a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case and uncovers systemic corruption that led to his daughter's death.

    EDGE OF DARKNESS

    by palimpsest

The 80s BBC original mini-series was a piece of awesomeness. In the original (possible SPOILERS fromt his point on), Craven, a police detective, becomes embroiled in what first appears to be the accidental killing of his daughter in a botched IRA murder attempt on Crvaven himself. Craven begins his own investigations, which quickly show that his daughter was the intended target all along. She was a left-wing Greenpeace type who herself has been asking awkward questions about a nuclear processing facility. Naturally there's a conspiracy to unravel, involving warring factions of the UK government, the CIA (represented by the never-better-than-in-this Joe Don Baker), the private armies of US industrialists and the SAS. Someof the original is very tied to that time period (there's a complicated plot involving trades union corruption, a backstory about old-guard CIA being killed off by a new corporate breed, nuclear and ecological concerns and US industrialism, all wrapped up in a massively complex plot involving US industrial takeovers of the UK, nuclear and ecological concerns of the 1980s, trades union corruption and all. INtertwined with this is an oedipal love story between Craven and his dead daughter, who appears to him on occasions through the piece as a ghost. The UK version played over six 50 minute eps, so to shoehorn it into a movie, I'd imagine a lot will be cut. The original won every TV award going, and it's got a simply cracking Eric Clapton/Michael Kamen score (their LETHAL WEAPON score is a toned-down retread of this). I'm interested to see how Campbell handles this (he made his name with the original), and Gibson's not a bad fit for the lead role. We'll see... In the meantime, get yourself a copy of the DVD, and enjoy...

Everyone should be very exited about this. It's a smart move by Mel and could have Oscar written on for him with Monahan adapting the already excellent script. Bob Peck turned in one of my all time favorite performance in the original so get your chops on Mel - really can't wait for this.

    by series7

Was killing it in the early 90's with No Escape (The Better version of The Condemded, though both are awesome films), The Best Bond to date, and the very entertaining Vertical Limit and the first new Zorro. Then he made some crap, made another amazing Bond. Now it looks like he'll do some decent stuff. WHY doesn't he just direct Bond movies? Seriously, all of his other films we could've lived without say for the possiblities of Zorro (and No Escape, but The Condemded does just a good of a job). Lets see how Martin handles the Birds. As for Melvin, funny story when filming the Beating of Christ, a friend of mine was going to school in Rome with some of Mels and some of the other prodocers kids and they gave her one of JC's thumbs. How sweet of a movie prop is that? I mean its like nothing you'd think of, but it would cool to just like leave it around the house and people would be like, "UMMM what the fuck is that?" "Oh thats Jesus' thumb." Its a little better then "Oh thats yoda's ear".

Well dereserving of a big screen adaptation, and still a very timely subject to explore. I hope there's a holdover of the music too, Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton wrote a brilliant theme for the original show. Gibson's made a solid choice fo his acting comeback.

The China Syndrome meets The Fountain

    by gunrunner

Just read the synopsis of the BBC mini-series. It sounds like one of the lamest things ever put on film; the politics and drama of The China Syndrome coupled with the mysticism of The Fountain. A police detective's leftist daughter is killed by corporate/government interests because she wants to blow the whistle on illegality within a nuke power plant, but to help him along the way, he's visited by his daughter's ghost for guidance. The original ending had the detective turning into a tree after succumbing to radiation poisoning (no joke), just like the ending of The Fountain. We all know the left hates nuclear power, but is there really anything more to say after Silkwood and TCS? Great choice Mel; sounds like a straight to DVD release.

    "Singing Detective" remake failed.

    by uncapie

Gibbo's people at Icon were so paranoid about anything negative getting out on it, screenings were limited and tight. I remember this stuffy-assed Brit who thought his shit didn't stink checking in everyone at the door. What an asshole this guys was! It was like you were going to see the Second Coming behind those doors! Understandably, after seeing the film, it was a piece of shit. Gibson has the power to get involved with something new and fresh. To help other people who want to see their ideas come to fruition on the screen. Why not do it? The original series stands on its own merits. It doesn't need a remake. Its like palimipsest stated above in the plot about the old guard CIA being by the new corporate breed. That can be applied to the film industry as well. Anyone that has knowledge or a true love of film, isn't needed in the film business unless you're a corporate prick good at screwing people over without any knowledge of film history or asthetics. That's why everything is a remake or sequel. there is no new originality and if it does break through, the corporate stooges have to remake or Xerox the master, diluting the original idea, inbreeding it over and over so that resembles the banjo player from "Deliverance."

I didn't think Mel was ever going to come back to acting, truly, I thought I had read he had sort of given that up. Also I am pretty sure I read an add in Variety where Rob Schneider said he would never work with or support Mel ever again, because of his anti-semetic ways. Interesting, but I hate to break it to you Deuce, nobody really cares what you think, not now, not ever. Now if The Beard or Jerry Bruckheimer or some other powerful force in Hollywood called for an all out boycott, even the self proclaimed King of Malibu would probably be relegated to the ranks of The Busey ("I'm looking for YOU BUDDY, AH HAA HAA HAA, ooh Jennifer, let me feel your body, ohhhhhh!")

I like Mel, the actor, quite a bit, but Passion of the Christ was an exceptionally well-made horror film, and Apocalypto - which you all obviously skipped because of the "controversy" and the subtitles - was hands-down the best action film of 2006, probably the best action film since The Matrix.
