Dr. Robert Langdon Finds His ANGELS & DEMONS Sidekick!!

Published at:  Apr 24, 2008 9:56:32 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Entertainment Weekly says Ayelet Zurer will star opposite Tom Hanks in ANGELS & DEMONS.

Ron Howard is returning to direct this DA VINCI CODE prequel, and Akiva Goldsman will once again adapt from Dan Brown's book (we've known for a while that Hanks, Howard, and Goldsman were all on-board).

Zurer's character is the daughter of CERN physicist Leonardo Vetra. Following her father's death, Vittoria pairs with Robert Langdon (Hanks) on a journey to uncover the mystery behind her father's murder and stop a terrorist plot.

..says THIS ARTICLE at EW's website.

An Isralei actress, Zurer has recently appeared in high-profile American films like MUNICH and VANTAGE POINT.

SOME ONE TEACH GOLDSMAN HOW TO WRITE

    by japra

I'm a fan of The Davinci Code book as a purely literate form of making films. Though not great literature, the book was captivating. The film on the other hand was a ridiculous and lazy attempt at filmmaking. I lay more blame on the writing more then the filmmaking itself. It was absolutely painful to sit through these expository scenes while everything was spelled out so easily for the audience. Akiva Goldsman is lauded for his writing abilities, but they were completely lacking for The Davinci Code. Ron Howard is a mediocre filmmaker, always playing it safe, never making any film that isn't a feel good crowd pleaser. He tackles his subject matter in such a "gosh golly" way that it eviscerates the blood from the meat.I will see this film, but with the lowest of expectations.

Is stopped reading around pg 150 and I rarely give up on books. I flipped forward to see if I was right about the twist, found I was, and then gave the book to someone else. Really poorly written and the dialogue all sounded so fake. My tolerance for junk is high but Angels & Demons was just too much.
I did like Deception Point. I thought it would make a great plot for a season of 24.

Goddamn, why do they keep giving that hack any jobs? This is a person who is constantly drawn on to write screenplay adaptions from books, and who NEVER SEEMS TO READ THE FUCKING BOOKS before writing the screenplay. I've NEVER seen a screenplay writer so consistent in his failure to UTTERLY MISS THE POINT of the books he's adapting.
On the other hand, this is a Dan Brown book, and Dan Brown is a hack, too. The only people that dig Dan Brown books are people who start their reviews of his books with "I don't normally like reading, but..."

But as for you twits who sit in this hole and snidely dismiss Dan Brown, you just need to do one thing: open up your checkbook. Look at it. Now pretend you are looking at Dan Brown's checkbook. Then cry. Does making a bajillion dollars make Dan Brown the greatest author ever? Of course not. However, neither does a bunch of pathetic weenies sitting in an anonymous forum calling him a hack MAKE him a hack either.

A season of 24? If I recall correctly, the original concept of 24 was NOT to have Kiefer save the world season after season, but to have different stories whose only common theme was that they took place over the course of 24 hours. Since this book was structured in much the same way, it seems like it'd be a natural fit.

"Angels and Demons" especially. These aren't serious books. Templar conspiracy theorists latched on to one and made it a hit. This just isn't A-List material. They are patently ridiculous and totally over the top but largely entertaining. The films should be full of Hey-I-Know-That-Guys having a ball and playing to type, with maybe one minor A lister slumming and enjoying themselves.

It follows pretty much the same formula as The Davinci Code, only with a different theme. It was entertaining overall, but like someone earlier pointed out, it wasn't high literature. Its like pulp. So the thing is, when they take a pulp novel, and dumb it down in movie form like the film version of "Davinci Code", it becomes so thin and diluted that there's practically no substance there, because there's little to begin with in terms of the novel.

And Lucid, I'm afraid I have to disagree. "Readable" doesn't equate to "good." Dan Brown has a great sense for pacing (making his books the very definition of "page-turners"), but the quality of the writing is, in my opinion, pretty poor. Not, say, "Left Behind" poor, but still bad.

...to deter tax crimes amongst the general public. Sucks for him. I don't know the details, but the only celebrities I know of being jailed for tax evasion are Snipes (a black guy), and the winner of the first Survivor (a gay guy).

I thought that movie sounded awesome (the one about the kid walking to the grocery store and back during the apocalypse), but I'll take Del Toro Hobbit movies too. Oh and Dan Brown sucks.

    Wesley Snipes goes to jail!

    by trazadone

OCALA, Florida (CNN) -- Actor Wesley Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison and fined up to $5 million Thursday for failing to file federal tax returns.

Wesley Snipes, sentenced to three years in prison, starred in "Blade," "Major League" and "Murder at 1600."
    1 of 2

It was the maximim sentence possible under federal sentencing guidelines.

Prosecutors last week urged U.S. District Judge William Hodges in Ocala, Florida, to sentence Snipes to the maximum penalty to demonstrate to taxpayers that refusal to pay income taxes carries severe penalties.

"The law is very clear: People must pay their taxes," Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman said. "There is no secret formula that eliminates a person's tax obligations."

Snipes was convicted on three misdemeanor counts of failure to file federal income tax returns.

Snipes, who has starred in movies such as "Blade," "Major League" and "Murder at 1600," had been charged with felony conspiracy counts for participating in a scheme that rejects the legal foundation of the tax system. However, a jury accepted his argument that he was innocently duped by errant tax advisers and acquitted him on the most serious charges.

"The fact that Snipes was acquitted on two felony charges and convicted 'only' on three misdemeanor counts has been portrayed in the mainstream media as a 'victory' for Snipes," the government document says.

"The troubling implication of such coverage for the millions of average citizens who are aware of this case is that the rich and famous Wesley Snipes has 'gotten away with it.' In the end, the criminal conduct of Snipes must not be seen in such a light."

Assistant Attorney General Nathan Hochman, head of the Justice Department's Tax Division, has promised to beef up the government's efforts to pursue those engaged in a variety of schemes making legal assertions that income taxes are either voluntary or unconstitutional.

"For nearly a decade, Snipes has engaged in a campaign of criminal tax conduct combining brazen defiance with insidious concealment," the prosecutors say. "By these means, Snipes has escaped paying more than $15 million in income tax to the IRS and has pursued an intended fraudulent harm to the United States Treasury of more than $41 million."

The document says Snipes shipped millions of dollars to accounts in Switzerland, Antigua and the Isle of Man to avoid taxes.

"Given defendant's income, earning capacity, and financial resources, both disclosed and undisclosed, the United States submits that a fine of at least $5 million is warranted," the sentencing recommendation says.

The 35-page argument for the stiffest possible penalty ends with a dramatic flair.

"In the defendant Wesley Snipes, the court is presented with a wealthy, famous and inveterate tax scofflaw. If ever a tax offender was deserving of being held accountable to the maximum extent for his criminal wrongdoing, Snipes is that defendant," it says.

The IRS is also seeking repayment of all taxes and interest through civil court proceedings.

When will Hollywood make tax-evasion movies?

    by pops freshemeyer

I know I'd love to see a movie that shows the plight of overpaid, untalented celebrities who are villified by the government because they didn't pay their income tax. Maybe we can even get a cameo by Willie Nelson...

Thats a nice google list of "celebrities" you've got there, but I haven't heard of any of them. I seriously doubt you heard of most of them either before you googled them. As for Cage and Nelson, if they do 3 years in prison for tax evasion, I'll issue you a formal apology. Until then, yeah, I'm saying they're making an example of a famous black man.

... I probably wouldn't pay $8.50 to see a movie about Mohammed the prophet of Islam being a cocksucking homosexual. I'd wait til Falcon released the gay porn version of the same movie, and then I'd rent that for $3.50 - assuming the guy playing Mohammed was hot.

a convicted famous black man - unless of course you think his conviction was a Jew conspiracy. but be fair - did you read the wingnut shit Snipes testified to? He's making a zillion times more money than you and me put together and he's relying on some crackpot advice to keep from paying his "fair share" of the loot. Boo fucking hoo. Let him cool his greedy arrogant heels in the clink for a few months.

I don't share the whole "eat the rich" mentality. Though I may be liberal, I think if you've worked hard and made a fortune, more power to you. Money management is a huge problem for celebrities. Many of them go bankrupt because of taking bad advice from self-interested parasites posing as advisors and friends, but sometimes the result is worse. Plus, there are a lot of corporate white collar criminals who are doing far more eggregious things than Snipes ever did, yet they walk the streets free because they are part of the system and pay off the right people.

An accountant for 15 years? That would mean you're at least in your mid-thirties. I would never have guessed. Are you this charming in person, or is this your behind-the-computer persona? With all your infantile name-calling, I wouldn't have thought you were older than 17, and thats giving you credit. But no one would lie about being an accountant. You got a wife and kids? Are you a daddy? Thats freakin' scary if you are.

    FAIL!

    by maniaq

Dan Brown's books make for good PULP fiction and maybe (just maybe) they could translate well to film in the right director's hands.
No doubt the producers thought those hands belonged to Howard because he managed to make mathematics semi interesting in Beautiful Mind - except that was Russell Crowe doing that, not Howard. If you have any doubts about Crowe's acting ability, watch The Insider.
The problem with Howard giving Brown's books the Beautiful Mind treatment is - with Hanks on board instead of a decent actor (Brown himself made no secret he wanted Harrison Ford) - the 90% preachy fucking "history" lesson that Brown uses as filler in his books ends up translating to film like dogshit translates to High Art. If you look hard enough you can probably find some meaning there, but most people just see a pile of shit...
So yeah this story has almost exactly the same plot as DVC, except with a little less conversation and a little more action - but if the same people are going to be doing it then we are just going to see the same pile of shit on the Big Screen.
And yes the saddest part (at least for the rest of us) is that this film will likely make a great big pile of money out of that pile of shit, too...

  • Absolutely true. But being self-centered, I'm really only concerned about the present day dangers that can kill me or make my life miserable. I'm sure the Aztecs and the Phoenecians and the Sumerians were also responsible for horrible things in the name of their religions too, but their not on my tits now, so please forgive my unwillingness to take the long contextual view of the theological and political Rubick's Cube that is Islam. And I know I can ask your forgiveness without you cutting my head off with a rusty pair of left-handed pinking shears.

I had hoped they would cast Monica Bellucci as the female lead. If they get Naveen Andrews as the Hassasin I'll be pleased. Somehow I doubt that will happen. Howard has been letting us down as of late. It truly is a shame...

...can you by lectured about making generalizations about race and homosexuality by someone using the screenname "Mohammed was a butt-fucking pedophile". I can that racism and homophobia are near and dear to his heart. I know the reason you didn't answer my question, Moh, about having a wife and kids is because you don't. Its a vicious cycle, eh Moh. You're angry and frustrated because you can't meet a woman, and you can't meet a woman because you're so angry and frustrated. Hopefully this talkback helps you a little, but in your advancing years, you should really try to meet a woman.

Sithdan: Akiva had two good scripts.

    by zerocorpse

Sure, he gave us "A Beautiful Mind" and "A Time to Kill" and even "Cinderella Man", but then he spent the rest of his career giving us:
    Batman & Robin
    Starsky & Hutch
I Am Legend (and it's shitty miss-the-point endings)
    Da Vinci Code
    I, Robot
    Lost in Space
    Batman Forever
    Deep Blue Sea
    Constantine
    . . .
Now, maybe he's just NOT cut out for adapting novels into screenplays. And maybe "A Beautiful Mind" and a few others were the EXCEPTIONS, not the rule. If you look at the man's record, his work is about 80% awful.
One good story doesn't excuse a dozen awful ones. I'm sorry. He's terrible. But at least in the case of Dan Brown books, Akiva's at about the right level.
How anybody can screw up a great short novella like "I Am Legend" is beyond me. It's all right there! The graphic novel managed to give a perfect storyboard for the movie, and yet Goldsman manages to not only mangle the setting, protagonist, and antagonists of the book, but he also MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE STORY.
I don't even think I need to remind you how absolutely mind-numbingly PAINFUL his "Batman & Robin" script was, do I? Akiva is responsible for EVERY SINGLE BAD LINE OF DIALOGUE in that shitstorm of a movie.
He's a hack who had a couple LUCKY moments where he actually wrote a halfway decent story, and a good director turned it into a good movie.

    by g8kpr

From my understanding, even though Angels and Demons came first before Da Vinci Code, it is being filmed as a Sequel.

That fact has me worried. I agree Ron Howard and Tom Hanks were poor choices for this movie. Lets hope they learned from their mistakes.

Having said all that, I did mildly enjoy the Da Vinci code, nowhere near an amazing film (as it could have been) but it wasn't completely horrendous as some say. I give it a "so-so".
