'It's Weevil Season, But We Were Prepared!!' Learn Which Big-Deal Movie Actress Graces THE OFFICE’s Season Finale!!

Published at:  Apr 24, 2008 8:16:06 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

NBC just announced Oscar-nominated movie star Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone,” “The Wire”), will grace “The Office's” hour-long fourth-season finale. (She is not to be confused with Oscar-nominated Amy Adams, who played The Hot Girl at the end of season one.) My man Mike Ausiello at TV Guide says the May 15 finale will feature two “Office” characters getting engaged.

Find three hilarious deleted sequences from last week’s episode (and several not-hilarious MasterCard and Toyota commercials) here. One of the scenes involves the Shrute bed and breakfast. The other two involve, among other things, Toby and Kelly’s takes on Michael’s love hunt.

Four more to go:

4.11 "NIGHT OUT"
04/24/2008 (09:00PM - 09:31PM) (Thursday) : Michael and Dwight decide to surprise Ryan in New York for a night of clubbing and meet his friends. Meanwhile, the Scranton branch is upset when they find out they have to come in on a Saturday for Ryan's website project. Jim's plan to save them has unexpected results.

4.12 "DID I STUTTER?"
05/01/2008 (09:00PM - 09:30PM) (Thursday) : When Stanley (Leslie David Baker) snaps at Michael (Golden Globe winner Steve Carell) during a meeting, Michael tries to give Stanley an attitude adjustment. Dwight (Rainn Wilson) decides to buy Andy’s (Ed Helms) car. Meanwhile, Pam (Jenna Fischer) deals with an unexpected inconvenience after spending the night at Jim’s (John Krasinski).

4.13 "JOB FAIR"
05/08/2008 (09:00PM - 09:31PM) (Thursday) : Jim (John Krasinski) hits the links with Andy (Ed Helms) and Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) to try and land his biggest client ever. Meanwhile, Michael (Golden Globe winner Steve Carell) sets up a booth at a local job fair, which happens to be at Pam's (Jenna Fischer) alma mater, to find "the best and the brightest" for Dunder-Mifflin's summer internship.

4.14 SEASON FINALE
05/15/2008 (09:00PM – 10:00PM) (Thursday)

9 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

    Amanda Peet

    by napoleon park

Amanda Peet from Studio 60 has been tapped to star in the office spin-off. That should be enjoyable, she is an attractive woman and a talented performer.Yeah, I know, when I said she'd been tapped to star I was suppose to say something crude along the lines of "yeah, I'd tap that a**", but I'm retired. You know how it goes, obesity + diabetes + old age = erectile disfunction. Sure, i'd still eat it with a spoon, but that makes no sense, to say "Amanda Peet from Studio 60 has been eaten with a spoon to star in the Office spin-off." Though I'd watch that.

I love the mixture emotions this season. The show is based on the Ricky Gervais BBC Office, which had a lot of drama in it. In only 13 (I think) episodes it managed to create some really interesting characters that the audience cared for. If you get a chance, check out The Office Christmas Special (BBC) and you'll see exactly what I mean.

    Lame episode

    by literarywanderer

Sorry, but I feel The Office has actually taken a slide in the past three episodes. That's not to say I've hated them. I loved the last two. It just that the tone has really skewed darker what with Michael and Jan's relationship going abusive and now Ryan doing coke. Tonight's episode was one I really just wanted to turn off because of the lame quality it carried. First was the problems with the website. Ok, it's doing poorly, but claiming there was a forum on it and that pedophiles were using it was really pushing possibility. Then there was Jim and the crew getting stuck on the property because security locked them in. I don't know what world the writers come from, but no office property I have ever been on has only one security guard for the times of operation. There are usually three shifts, especially after the property has closed (a requirement by insurance companies if the property owner wants coverage). In fact, how dumb could the guard have been to see all those cars in the parking lot and not noticed the Dunder Mifflin crew had left? Of course, somehow the cleaning crew, who came in at roughly 10 or 11 PM, somehow had keys which no property in its right mind would do with the theft implications involved. Third, let's have Dwight make lame "Hobbit" jokes all episode about the short guy. It would have been funnier if he'd made short jokes rather than "do you have magical powers" and cliche garbage that he did use. Then there was the hint that Ryan does coke, that he sucks at his job, that his life in NYC isn't as good as he lets on. It's like the writers, due to the strike, decided to completely rip apart the story arc they originally intended and take it into territory I'm not sure it should go into. Drug addiction, spousal abuse, and other issues are just not going to work on this show. Also, enough with the lame "Michael is lonely" issue with him trying to date whatever moves. The fact they pretty much ended the Jan relationship within an episode really just ruined what could have been a longer, richer sidestory. Tonight's episode was just too unrealistic, too sloppy, and not as funny as it could have been. God only knows what it will be like when the writing crew is split between two shows.

but the episode still wasn't terribly good. I always figured the website would bomb in a majory way, so I don't think they are taking Ryan in a different direction, they're just done with the set-up and are now moving on to the hard fall part of the story. Also, glad they swapped Scrubs and 30 Rock so I can watch Survivor and don't have to watch NBC till the Office starts. I tried to watch the start of this season of Earl and it is beyond painful.

Why didn't Jim say anything about Toby? Who in their right mind, would not only make out with Dwight, but beg him to come back? Why would Ryan hang out with those two? They could have easily, in his mind, got him caught. Why was Ryan's TV next to his bed instead of in front of it?

I think Ryan was happy to see them for two reasons. First, I'm guessing he hasn't really made many friends or fit in in NY. Second, he was coked up. I mean, talking about the beet farm without mocking it is a sure sign of that. As for Jim not dealing with Toby... everyone was a little stunned with the hand on the knee thing, as was Jim. Besides, Jim shows his emotions by making faces at the camera. Not big on confrontation, either, I'd guess. Personally, I'd like to see Toby return with a girlfriend who is very, obviously, similar to Pam.

    As for reality...

    by gaiusthebrave

I have always wondered what goes on in the head of a person who doesn't like a television show or movie because it strays from reality. Sure, there are times when fiction can stray TOO far and you can no longer turn off the lie detector in the back of your brain. But, if you're waiting until now to talk about how unrealistic The Office is then you obviously have just turned your television on for the first time, and I congratulate you on the purchase of a new tv, or I give you my condolences that a once busy life has fallen into a slump and now you're forced to waste time in front of bright shiny box like the rest of us slobs. If The Office were realistic, Michael would have been fired or at least sued for sexual harassment any number of times, Dwight would have been fired for...pick your favorite reason, and Jim would've gotten his ass kicked by Pam's ex on his way to his car.
The fact that even though comedy can be true to reality and be hilarious doesn't mean it always has to pass a reality auditor's test to be good. Either you laughed and/or cried or you didn't.

    by mel gibsteinberg

Ryan's talking points were so corporate and realistic it was sad. As he tried to defend the website, which clearly is meant to help reduce sales staff, or at the very least their commission, I just heard some of the consultants and high executives at my company jawing over and over, just classic! Also, yet another episode where Jim has a great idea, but is thwarted by bad luck and inexperience. Not unlike the time he tried to combine birthday cake day with the staff, and had them nearly revolt. Its so sad, and yet also true to work life.

    by mel gibsteinberg

Are people really complaining that this show is lame because it isn't realistic enough? When have you ever known a boss as bad as Michael Scott, ever? The show has never been %100 realistic, it is a parody, it is satire, which means it takes the everyday, ratchets it up a notch in order to over simplify and mock things, and then has fun. But actually, besides that, who cares, what I notice on this board is not people who hate the show, but rather, seem to hate the fact that others like it, as if this somehow makes any difference in the world. Who cares if someone found last night funny when you did not, do you think your opinion will in anyway influence the writers or producers of the show? And for that matter, should it?

They coke thing was twofold. It did show that Ryan's life is not as fabulous as he would like to let on. . . and it found a way to show how Michael would feel if he had Ryan's approval. For those pushing the reality schtick...

    by literarywanderer

When I complained about the show not being "realistic" enough, I meant they were creating artificial situations to set up jokes. The crew getting locked into the parking lot was lame because it would never happen. Security guards can be dense but not so stupid as to see a large group of cars in the parking lot, see lights on one of the upper floors still on, and not put two and two together. If they'd set up getting locked on the property better I wouldn't have been so irritated (have the OCD, so I can't help nitpicking). I also hated the continuity error when they said Dwight alone had the keys to the office when an earlier season stated he only had a copy and he wasn't even supposed to have that. If Jim, the Assistant Regional Manager, doesn't have a key, the guy really is a moron. This epsiode didn't really help Jim's character with him backstabbing Ryan by complaining about him to their superior at the Christmas party, not coordinating with security, and really not reacting to Toby touching Pam's leg.

I'm also tired of the lame hissy fit Kelly keeps slinging at Ryan. We have the awesome dysfunctional relationship of Jan and Michael end in one episode without any real repercussions but we have to still deal with Kelly's hate for her ex? Well, Mindy Kaling did write it so I guess we should have expected her pushing her character forward a little bit.

As to my dark comments, this season really just seems geared to turning every character into complete failures. We've had two relationships break up (Jan-Michael and Dwight-Angela), Dwight turn near suicidal briefly, Ryan turning into a coked out loser, Jim slowly showing his incompetency (maybe that's the real reason he didn't take the job in NYC), and even Kevin got screwed with his fiance dumping him. Why the hell didn't we get an episode of that? I would have loved that! Kevin needs screentime damnit!

This episode was just full of cliches. The exec failing with a coke habit, maids who only speak Spanish so Oscar has to talk to them (it may be true, but using it as a joke is old), Dwight's hobbit joke (I saw that coming the minute Ryan's friend appeared), etc. The only two scenes I really liked were Toby's becoming uncomfortable and jumping the fence and Meredith getting hit in the face with the football. Michael failing with women at a bar was a no brainer, though Dwight succeeding was humorous.

Dark humor is what this season is going for and it simply doesn't fit these characters. I kind of feel like that lapse during the writers' strike caused problems with the overall season arc (shortening episode number) so the crew decided to jump over certain points to get to the main ones. There is a real disconnect between what was shown late last year and what we've had since April and it is definitely not the same product. It's gone dark. Hopefully there's a pay off. Hopefully.

I think they hit on it best in the birthday cake episode, where Michael admits he tried to do things logically at first too, but the problems are systemic. Applying logic to problems at that company doesn't work, which brings about apathy to people in charge. I also didn't get that Jim complained about Ryan as much as Jim complained about the website and how it has some major flaws and ignores the companies strengths, which again seems pretty logical, and again usuing logic blows up in Jim's face.

    Jim passive

INWOsuxRED has some good points about Jim, and I agree that he isn't incompetent, nor was he complaining about Ryan. I think that the episode shows how he is very nonconfrontational and passive agressive, and always has been (the vacation during Pam's wedding, the same ham and cheese sandwich everyday, wussing out with Roy, etc). I think the bit about the website was actually funny because of Ryan's paranoia and insecurity coupled with his cut-throat attitude than it was about Jim's motivations. It reminded me of Jim's first day back to Scranton in Season Three when Ryan says, "Jim's a nice guy. That's why I got the desk." *smirk* If Ryan and Jim have ever had a dynamic, it's been based on that moment (though obviously not much explored before Thursday's episode). . . . I do think that Jim's passivity also makes the uncomfortable situations in Season Four all the funnier.

Who would have thought Tobey was so agile?

I see lots of awkward comedy in the future.
