Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 4th week of April DVDs: CLOVERFIELD, Mae West, Sturges, Fuller, Silent Prostitution, Shaw Brothers +

Published at:  Apr 22, 2008 5:43:45 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here – you wouldn’t believe how awesome and eclectic this week’s column is. Lots of vintage jewels this week. Great titles – ancient titles… and so much more. I loved viewing most of these this week. As always – if you click on the box art or titles you’ll goto Amazon – where you can learn more on the title in question – and if you feel like it, you can buy it – thus supporting this column with a small percentage of the revenue helping this endless series. Well – there’s a lot to get to. Let’s get to it, shall we…

CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR

One of last year’s BUTT-NUMB-A-THON films – and an utterly fantastic movie. Is it all true? Did it go down as it went down in the flick? Probably not, but God damn it is entertaining. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s amazing supporting performance stole assloads of limelight away from Tom Hanks’ best character work in years. And… rightfully so. Hoffman was on fucking fire in this movie – and let’s hear it for Mike Nichols – who cranked out a great film. UNIVERSAL doesn’t quite have their Blu-Ray operation going quite yet – but this week I did get a press release from them telling me what is coming up for the year. Later this year we’ll have: HEROES SEASON ONE & SEASON TWO, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, WANTED, HELLBOY II, MAMMA MIA!, THE MUMMY TRILOGY, THE SCORPION KING, AMERICAN GANGSTER, KNOCKED UP, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, MIAMI VICE, END OF DAYS, U-571 and LAND OF THE DEAD – all hitting in BLU RAY. Till then though – we’ve got to enjoy their product in Standard Def… bummer, huh?

CLOVERFIELD

I got the standard two disc release that you see above about three weeks ago. The DVD is out-fucking-standing. I’m dying for the Blu Ray, but Paramount has yet to announce their intentions for the High Def format since the collapse of HD DVD. That said – the sound on the DVD blew my mind here at the house. I really hope the sound designers get some love at the end of the year on this title. Amazing work here. Now – there’s a series of exclusives with certain retailers on this title – here’s what you get at different retailers:

**Suncoast & FYE - Limited edition swank steel book collectible packaging (pictured above).

**Best Buy - Bonus Disc entitled "TJ Miller's Video Diary," containing almost 30 minutes of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage with "Hud" (pictured below, top).

**Kmart & Sears - Get a free Cloverfield Ringtone.

**Target - Target Deluxe Edition includes "Rob's Goin' To Japan Party Mix" music CD (pictured below, bottom).
** The track list for the music CD includes:
* OK GO - "Here It Goes Again"
* Goldfrapp - "Ooh La La"
* Coconut Records - "West Coast"
* Scissors for Lefty - "Got Your Moments"
* The Vapors - "Turning Japanese"
* Parliament - "Give Up the Funk"
* Of Montreal - "Wraith Pinned to the Mist"
* The Blood Arm - "Do I Have Your Attention?"
• Bright Eyes - "Four Winds"

Now you know – and knowing is half the battle!

THE SAVAGES

So yeah… Phillip Seymour Hoffman is an acting God – and this was yet another of his outstanding films from last year. It’s a brutal and human story… remember those? No big effects, small budget, exquisite direction and writing? And performances from Laura Linney, Hoffman and Philip Bosco that just kill ya. If you love raw, powerful work – this film will grip you.

THE ORPHANAGE

A Genuinely Terrifying Film. It’s funny – I met the director of this, Juan Antonio Bayona – eons ago at Sitges when I was a juror. He was a young filmmaker with an astonishing short film SPONGE MAN – which felt and looked like a classic 80s film from Spielberg. I’m serious – remember his AMAZING STORIES episode – that sort of quality and magic. I had no idea that it was the same director – that directed that short film – who was behind THE ORPHANAGE. But it was. And he knocked this film clear out of the ballpark. Brilliantly handled ghost film. When the scientific team gets involved with Geraldine Chaplin… I nearly lost my shit from fright. In BLU RAY – this film is as I saw it at FANTASTIC FEST – all those months ago. Pristine and intimate. You could feel a cold wind emanating from the film… chilling you… as though each member of the audience was touched by something unnatural. Genuinely unnerving. Amongst the very best films of 2007.

MIDNIGHT

Never heard of this one? Frankly – film rarely gets this good. Many people consider 1939 – the best year of film ever. It truly was a magic year. All the more magic because of films like this one – It stars Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche and John Barrymore – who is too often overlooked for his brilliant comedic work. It was written by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder!!! Oh – and it was directed by the also – often overlooked brilliant director, Mitchell Leisen. This is a film that dissects, roasts and serves the aristocracy in an exquisite film. Absolutely hilarious – with amazing performances by the three leads. Classic!

THE MAJOR AND THE MINOR

This is Billy Wilder’s first directorial effort – it’s not quite genius – but ya know what – it’s pretty damned hilarious. I’m a big Ray Milland and Ginger Rogers fan. And this film was a discovery as I watched it. I’d never heard of it – but the film is very funny. Very funny. It’s basically a story about a girl (Ginger Rogers) trying to get home. That said – to say she takes a few unexpected turns along the way… well, if you know Wilder, that’s no surprise. Another gem!

EASY LIVING

The key name you need to pay attention to here is PRESTON STURGES. If a movie has his name on it… anywhere… BUY IT! Instantly. He was a brilliant writer and a brilliant director. This was back in his pure writing days – but directed by the fantastic comedy director, Mitchel Leisen. And the film stars Ray Milland, Jean Arthur and Edward Arnold. Edward Arnold is one of my favorite actors… he didn’t stray far from his standard role – which was the Patron Saint of Evil Corporate Bastards! But here – while still a bit of a cad – he’s the unwitting saint that bestows a magic fur coat on Jean Arthur – and suddenly – a magical bit of hilarity gets unleashed. It’s pure screwball comedy at its best – written with all the wit that you’d expect from one of the greatest film writers and directors. Exquisite work!

MY BOY JACK

It’s a lot more than Harry Potter goes to Trench Warfare. Here you see Daniel Radcliffe turn in a superior performance to anything we’ve seen from him before. Here he plays the 17 year old son of Rudyard Kipling – who runs off to fight in World War I – Here you have a story of a patriotic Father – whose fervor for Queen and Country drives him to push his son to fight in a fight – that he never should have fought in. The film is absolutely compelling. Do not miss seeing this. Especially if you’re a fan of Radcliffe’s and you’re curious what else he’s capable of. You might be surprised.

SHE DONE HIM WRONG

Cary Grant usually had the screen under control… he had all eyes watching him. Well, in SHE DONE HIM WRONG – a young hussy of an actress hit the scene and she took every single eye with her. This was the first film of Mae West – the brilliant hip slinging, bust.. busty… buster of people’s jaws – by causing them to hit the floor. If you love Dolly Parton – wait’ll you get a load of Mae West. She broke down every stereotype for women as quiet demure fragile things – and birthed the Grand Dame onto the scene. She used Sex and Innuendo like Bush uses Incompetence… yup – you look up those words – Mae West is there… and so is Bush. This is the film where she birthed some of her most famous lines – and most don’t realize – the man she was dueling with… well, he was Cary Grant – who also happens to be fantastic.

MERRILL’S MARAUDERS

I’m not sure why the cover of the box doesn’t say… “SAM FULLER’S MERRILL’S MARAUDERS” – cuz if there was ever a director that demanded, earned and should have a possessory credit – it’s Sam Fuller! Sam Fuller is the same sort of director as Sam Peckinpah… Fuller was heard to say he liked to start with an explosion and build from there. This is a fantastic Fuller flick. If you thought Eastwood’s films on Iwo Jima were the best Pacific War films you’ve ever seen… Check this out – This isn’t only exciting, but it is also a brilliant character piece. Fuller knew war. He was there – not with Merrill’s Marauders – but he took his astute observations from his own experience in war – and layered that upon this story – and hot damn it kicks ass. Sam Fuller is one of the greatest directors of all time. If you love a great WAR film – this is exactly that! By the way – this is definitely my favorite Jeff Chandler role. Outstanding.

Shirley Temple – Americas Sweetheart Collection, Vol. 6 ( STOWAWAY / YOUNG PEOPLE / WEE WILLIE WINKIE )

When I was a little boy – I thought I was going to grow up to marry Shirley Temple. Unfortunately – that delusion ended abruptly in about 1978 – when I found out she was extremely old. I was heartbroken. My parents raised me on Shirley Temple films – and while YOUNG PEOPLE isn’t great – it’s basically a “Let’s throw a show” film minus Mickey and Judy – but the other two are wonderful. In particular – WEE WILLIE WINKIE is one of my favorite Shirley Temple films… It was directed by John Ford (yes, he directed John Wayne AND Shirley Temple… the mind boggles) This film is just one of my favorite all time films. First off – you have Cesar Romero as the evil Khoda Khan. Imagining him playing the JOKER with this kind of sly evil charm keeps me awake at night. But the amazing thing is… VICTOR MCLAGLEN. I fucking love VICTOR MCLAGEN. Be it in THE QUIET MAN (fighting John Wayne) – or my favorite McLagen role in John Ford’s THE INFORMER… Victor McLagen is amazing. He’s just one of the greatest character actors of all time – and beloved by John Ford – and here he has one of his most enduring film roles. When he’s onscreen with Shirley… it’s amazing. Just amazing. Discover this film, I beg you.

A DATE WITH JUDY

Jane Powell was an incredibly hot, cute and hot, cute – oogling-worthy young actress. Now her little sister was Elizabeth Taylor in this film. The movie was directed by Richard Thorpe. Who? Well you might be familiar with his films like TARZAN ESCAPES, TARZAN FINDS A SON, TARZAN’S NEW YORK ADVENTURES, IVANHOE, THE PRISONER OF ZENDA and KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE. Now – this isn’t at all like those films – it’s closer to that film that those girls in HEAVENLY CREATURES loved… THE GREAT CARUSO (With MARioooooooo) Yes, he did musicals – and they were pretty fun – and A DATE WITH JUDY isn’t a GREAT musical – but it has greatness sprinkled throughout. The cast was outstanding – Joining Powell and Taylor are Carmen Miranda and Robert Stack (extremely young)… Playing himself is Xavier Cugat… and yes, he’s awesome as always. But my fave is Daddy…. Who is played by Wallace Beery. Who like Victor McLagen… is one of my all time favorite lugs of an actor.

Eclipse Series 10 – SILENT OZU-THREE FAMILY COMEDIES ( TOKYO CHORUS, I WAS BORN BUT…, PASSING FANCY ) (Criterion Collection)

If you know OZU – you know how awesome it is that Criterion is unleashing these very early and rare works from his Silent era. Yasujiro Ozu is one of the single most important directors in the history of Japanese film – developing a lot of their cinematic language and style… even in these silent comedies. In particular – I loved I WAS BORN BUT… - Criterion has done another bang-up job.

DEATH OF A CYCLIST – Criterion Collection

Have you enjoyed Guillermo Del Toro’s explorations of Spain during Franco’s Fascist rule? Here’s a film that skewers life in Spain in that era. In many ways this is a serious play on the Sturges and Wilder comedies above. Where those films peppered the dire times with humor – here’s Bardem peels it apart like an onion… and yes, there will be tears. Again – Criterion does a great job presenting this film. Check it out.

CARTOON COMMERCIALS

Amongst my earliest collections – as a kid – I bought at conventions anything – that had ANIMATED footage. So I have a 45 minute reel of 50’s-70’s Animated esoterica – including a lot of commercials. This is like that reel, but on overload. If you love fun background material for parties – something to stir up conversation… these vintage animated commercials rule!

FLASH POINT

Another graduate of FANTASTIC FEST last year is FLASH POINT – and if you’re a Donnie Yen fan this is candy. If you’re not a Donnie Yen fan… BECOME ONE IMMEDIATELY! This is a Donnie Yen exploitation film – he’s doing incredible stuff… for basically the entire film. It’s not the best Hong Kong action film I’ve seen – but goddamn it kicks ass. Watch his fight with Collin Chou and try not say “FUCK” over and over and over again. I triple dog dare ya. Here’s another awesome film that you didn’t see in a theater in the U.S. – so you’ll be forced to check it out on DVD. It’s worth it!

HYPOCRITES (1915) / ELEANOR’S CATCH (1916)

I have a not so secret obsession with Silent Cinema – this should arrive tomorrow in the mail – HYPOCRITES is directed by the most important female director of the Silent Era – Lois Weber – and the film has a wonderful reputation – I’m very much looking forward to checking it out…. Especially due to the full nudity that it apparently contains… a bit shocking for 1915!

GUMBY: THE MOVIE

I love GUMBY – this dvd comes with a bendable Gumby toy. Bliss. The film isn’t for me – but if you have kids… unleash the madness that is Gumby upon them. Everybody should grow up with Gumby.

THE RED KIMONA (1925)

Here’s another risqué – cautionary tale about hard life for young women. In particular this is a story of girl led into prostitution, murder and true love… so essentially – it’s like a realistic version of PRETTY WOMAN. You’ll be shocked by how adult this film is… The silents pre-dated the Hollywood Code – and as a result they deal with subject matters that film had to place in subtext till the Sixties and Seventies. Thanks to KINO – they’re unveiling the great female directors of the silent era. This is another jewel of a long past era.

OCEAN WAIF (1916) / 49-17 (1917)

This is the third of KINO’s series on “First Ladies” I really don’t know much about these two films beyond what you’ll find on Amazon at the link above – but I do have it ordered. Silent Films are Time Machines opening a window on a different time. I find them enlightening and fascinating.

BEFORE THE NIKELODEON: THE EARLY CINEMA OF EDWIN S. PORTER

Edwin S Porter? He was Thomas Edison’s cameraman, according to this documentary by Charles Musser. I’ve even had a Edwin S Porter film parody animation in the corner… Me from THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY – which is 105 years old this year. I love that film – but in addition to that well-known classic – you’ll find 16 complete films – including his version of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK – long before Abbott & Costello. Heh. This is a real treat.

INTIMATE CONFESSIONS OF A CHINESE COURTESAN

THIS FUCKING RULES – TRUST ME!

THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF CUBBY BEAR

The Van Bueren Studio that created Cubby Bear was a fantastically bizarre, surreal and kinda creepy cartoon universe. Cubby Bear would be my Stay Puft Marshmallow Man that would seek to swallow my Soul. Look at those evil pacman eyes. He wants your soul. He wants all of our souls – and now Cubby Bear… the long neglected jewel of Van Bueren’s half-crazed attempt to ripoff Mickey Mouse is set to be unleashed upon mankind. The result? AWESOME. I love me some Cubby Bear. If you love early animation – you shouldn’t be able to resist.

Well – that’s it for this week. Next week we’ll be looking at 27 DRESSES, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY, Criterion’s THE RED BALLOON, Volume 3 of the Young Indiana Jones, I SPY season 1, 2, 3 – Criterion’s WHITE MANE, THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, SALUDOS AMIGOS, THREE CABALLEROS, TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA, KING CORN, IN THE BLOOD, PADDLE TO THE SEA, PLASTIC ONO BAND, Sabrina the Teenage Witch – Animated, ANGELIQUE COLLECTION, OCEAN’S ELEVEN (Blu Ray), Unsuk Chin: ALICE IN WONDERLAND, FORGOTTEN NOIR, NIGHT OF THE FOX, THE BEAST IN SPACE, HEADLESS HORSEMAN, BOARDINGHOUSE, THE NEW YORK RIPPER and much more!!! See you next We… I mean Tuesday!

    THE ORPHANAGE was terrific.

    by psyclops

That movie has some moments of real tension and there are two simultaneous jump scares that almost gave me a fucking heart attack, both prime examples of how you effectively jolt the audience with a real payoff instead of a stupid cat jumping out of a closet or whatever passes for scary these days (seriously, in the PROM NIGHT remake it's a lamp that a girl bumps into). The lead actress is terrific in it and the ending is both horrifying and extremely moving at the same time. It's definitely worth checking out.

    The Savages

    by john-locke

Am I the only one who thought it was absolutely hilarious in a brutally and savagely dark comedy way? Sure it's a great human story with fantastic believable performances but I absolutely laughed my ass off at a few moments (and I thought it was set up that way, I'm talking about the Plane Scene and the Dinner scene in particular), surely people don't think the director did this as a pure Drama and that Linney was playing her character totally straight do they? It's a black dramedy and I absolutely loved it.

Seriously, do we need it on DVD this soon? I saw it in theater once, couldn't really convice anyone else to go with me, nor could I get anyone to see it again. I enjoyed it, but I feel like I need some gap between it to really enjoy it again. Sometimes I miss the days of having to wait for your movies. Now no one wants to go to theaters, they'll wait for DVD. Then just watch it by themselves. Oh and Harry Potter, face it your never going to be anything but Harry Potter. I don't think your going to Harrison Ford your way out of it. Get used to it, you knew it was going to happen.

    by hereagain

They are on TCM this week - well, maybe they've already shown. And Richard Thorpe, director of "Date with Judy," was also the original director of "The Wizard of Oz" - shot a few weeks, before he was fired. His stuff was scrapped, and the film rethought. Check it out on IMDb - kinda fascinating. I'm going to be at Hollywood Video at 10A when the doors open - I've waited months to see "Cloverfield."

i know, i know, i'm in the minority, but i actively disliked both charlie wilson's war and the orphanage. just don't see what all the fuss was about, especially with regard to the latter. i thought it looked great and the acting was pretty solid and the story had its share of spooky moments but on the whole it added up to a very familiar if not entirely generic ghost story. cloverfield and the savages are easily the discs to buy this week. i am going to get crucified for that assessment of the orphanage but so be it. i am prepared to face the wrath of the aicn gods (and talkbackers).

    by hamslime

That doesn't make sense to me. Wasn't the whole conceit of the movie that it was shot on a video camera? I'll have to watch it again, but I'm reasonably certain that Hud's camera didn't shoot 1080p quality video, so I have to ask...why should Cloverfield get a Blu-Ray release again?

Blu-ray doesn't have to mean high def video. It's just like a much much bigger DVD. So the extra space could be used for an audio track as fricken huge as it was in the cinema.

Personally, I have to say Donnie Yen is better but then again he's been in a lot more movies than Tony Jaa who's basically the new kid on the block. Flash Point is actually a pretty bad movie right up until the climax which is pretty over the top and a sweet fight scene. Unfortunately, Donnie puts out a lot of crap like Seven Swords and Dragon Tiger Gate. They are pretty to look at but the stories are a mess. Needless to say neither of these guys are thespians, but Sha Po Lang (Kill Zone) is definitely the Donnie Yen movie to see as he's surrounded by a fairly strong supporting cast and it has some of the best fight choreography ever put to celluloid.

I'll give you that you can get better picure quality on Blu-Ray, but I'm not buying the better sound quality. It can't take THAT much space on a DVD. I also promise that I won't triple post this. In case I do, sorry in advance.

Series7, I'm not sure Jaa or Yen have any real interest in making movies for Hollywood. I think Donnie had a cameo in Blade 2 and one of the Highlanders but that's hopefully the extent of his foray over here. Along with Sha Po Lnag, check him out in Once Upon A Time in China Part 2 and if you can find it over here, his latest, An Empress and the Warriors is pretty good too.

If Harry won't tell you, I will. As far as Dragon Dynasty titles goes, check out Kill Zone and The Protector. City of Violence is more "guys getting stabbed with sashimi knives" than martial arts but it's a good little flick. Seven Swords is weak but it does have some good choreography. Dog Eat Dog and Fatal Contact had a couple of good moments but overall failed to deliver, although other reviewers felt differently. Unfortunately some of the best martial arts stuff isn't in the Dragon Dynasty catalogue yet. One of the best Hong Kong movies I've seen in a while is Invisible Target. Just unbelievable action and chase sequences. Shinobi, a recent Japanese wire-fu flick is simply one of the best movies this decade, period. Protege is another great HK movie that hasn't seen a North American release yet. Then there's stuff like Exiled, Election 1 & 2, The Myth and A Bittersweet Life (fabulous) that barely register a blip on our radar. Most of those titles you'll have to get through online rental services like eHit, Cinflix or Tiger Cinema. Or search the torrents. Also, along with Dragon Dynasty, Tartan Video puts out a lot of good titles like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy. Considering Harry's love for Asian cinema, I really am surprised he doesn't review those films more often or at least have a section on this site devoted to them.

I definitely prefer Donnie Yen. Jaa is entertaining, and he sells his moves well, but Donnie does it better. Like every move he does...you feel. And he really has a handle on realistic fighting, with most of his fights in his current stuff ending with the bad dudes getting brought to the ground. It's really exciting to see someone go in the same direction Bruce Lee did with realistic fights, but still elevating it to a new level of entertainment. Jaa is fun to watch, bu I don't see him developing into anything more than a more talented stunts guy.

and the best Dragon Dynasty title

    by kungfuhustler84

is a tie between Sha Po Lang (Killzone) and the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, hands down, with Police Story coming in a close second. That makes for one of the best modern martial arts movies(Sammo vs Donnie!!!), one of the greatest kung fu classics of all time (look at all those cool training sequences!!!) and Jackie being Jackie in his prime, getting hurt, REAL BAD, for our viewing entertainment. I'm also really looking forward to their edition of Come Drink With Me, probably one of the definitive kung fu pictures of the 20th century, and hoping, praying that they release Fighter in the Wind, Fist of Legend, and the Drunken Master movies. I already own most of those, but getting copies of the movies all gussied up by Dragon Dynasty will be far more exciting than the bare bones copies I have. Any other suggestions on here for Dragon Dynasty? What about that Shaw Brothers Journey of the Monkey picture from the 60s to capitalize on the release of Forbidden Kingdom. That would be fun.

but I just got inspired again. Since they already released one Gordon Liu movie, they should defnitely release Return to the 36th chamber and...8 Diagram Pole Fighter!!! That movie is so awesome, and has one of the best stick fights ever. And what about a Hwang Jang Lee collection? It could have the first Drunken Master movie and the two Secret Rival movies. He's not well known but he is easily one of the greatest martial arts movie kickers who ever lived. Oh and one more, and this is important, Wheels on Meals, with an interview with both Jackie and Benny Urquidez, giving a play by play on their legendary fight. I know the rest of the movie is just okay but that fight alone with restored picture would be worth the price. So am I just talking to myself or can I get some backup on this stuff?

The great thing about the Shaw Brothers is that their stuff is being released by Tokyo Shock in beautifully restored and remastered DVDs. What we need now is better releases from Johnnie To. Election 1 and 2 got sweet Tartan releases but Exiled didn't. And although "Beat" Takeshi Kitano makes a lot of stinkers, they still deserve proper DVD releases over here. And then there are all the samurai movies which haven't received a solid DVD release. The Hidden Blade deservedly received gold star treatment but there are plenty more that are only out on subpar transfers.

Ronin Gai got a pretty decent release through HVE a few years ago. I just picked it last month. I have to say it's a good transfer. Harry, You're The Greatest

    by rebeck2

Seriously. Does anyone have such wonderfully eclectic taste in or greater and wider knowledge of film? The answer is no. Every day people come on this site and hurl abuse at you, and I just want to thank you for this column, always my favorite part of this site. It celebrates EVERY kind of film - not just modern or American or action or sci-fi or comic book, or whatever the fanboys are in love with at the moment. No, you do your best to open the minds of fanboys who would normally write off an old film as "boring" or "slow", or in their worst show of stupidity, "totally gay". As hard as it is to get through to them, I think this column has to pique their interest and convince them to get a little more daring in their Netflix queue. It's a great service and it shows that you are a TRUE lover of film. I'm right there with you. I don't mind at all being a movie geek in the true definition of that term - somebody who loves all the genres and is searching out great new movie experiences wherever I can find them. It seems too many geeks around here think that means they should only care about the latest superhero CGI-fest. I just fell in love with an old film I'd never seen before last week, "The Bad And The Beautiful" with Kirk Douglas. Fantastic. Before that it was "Seance On A Wet Afternoon" and Becker's "Le Trou" and the samurai film "Kill" and Bergman's "The Silence" and anything with Glenn Ford (what an underrated amazing movie star he was) and the classic drive-in movie "The House That Screamed"... I could go on. Every time I think I've seen everything I find something new that I missed and there's a very real joy of discovery. Good job, Harry, in encouraging that in me and everyone else here.

That's the great thing about Asia cinema. The good guys rarely seem to live. Hard Boiled is easily the best Asian entry in crime/cop genre. I'd have to say SPL (Kill Zone) is a close second or possibly third. It's been a while since I watched The Killer. And for anyone who wants to see the latest entry in the Asian WW2 genre, The Assembly just came out on DVD. It's China's version of Saving Private Ryan. It chronicles China's Civil War. Not a great film but the battle sequences are well done, if unrealistic.

The movie is simply okay. Douchie yuppies shake around camera even at moments when the film clearly doesn't call for it, and the majority of the dialouge is compromised of "Oh My God!! Shit!!! Oh my God!!" Still has its moments, the bridge scene is fantastic and I liked the small peeks at the monster, but its basically a parlor trick that can't quite sustain its 90 minutes. Overall, simply okay. Not great, not best of anything, but just okay.

ir·re·gard·less Audio Help /ˌɪrɪˈgɑrdlɪs/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ir-i-gahrd-lis] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
    –adverb Nonstandard. regardless.

[Origin: 1910–15; ir-2 (prob. after irrespective) + regardless]

—Usage note Irregardless is considered nonstandard because of the two negative elements ir- and -less. It was probably formed on the analogy of such words as irrespective, irrelevant, and irreparable. Those who use it, including on occasion educated speakers, may do so from a desire to add emphasis. Irregardless first appeared in the early 20th century and was perhaps popularized by its use in a comic radio program of the 1930s.

don't be fooled. Cloverfield wasn't really shot on low-res consumer handycams. For the most part, they were using $80,000 cameras, natively recording at 1080p/24p. The filming is actually pretty high-tech. So, yes, it fully deserves a high-def release.

HOWARD THE DUCK has been released on DVD in England and Germany; both feature nice widescreen transfers, with pretty much the same bonus features (a few trailers, one of which has some "behind the scenes" footage) ... however, both DVD's are Region-2, so you'd need a "multi-region"-capable player to view them. Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de would be the best places to find them. And, yes ... HOWARD THE DUCK does, indeed, rule.

    by hawaiian organ donor

Actually, for all those on here wanting to pick up Howard the Duck, you don't need a region 2 or region free DVD player. Just use something like DVDFab to rip it and then Nero to burn it. DVDFab removes the region specific nonsense and is freeware as a bonus. I've had the movie in my shopping cart on dozens of occassions but can't pull the trigger. I haven't seen it in 20 years so I'm not sure how well it's aged.

    by hawaiian organ donor

These are all coming out on DVD in the next couple months. Fatal Move with Sammo Hung. This movie was given the equivalent of an NC-17 rating due to violence. Not a great movie as there is more gunplay than fisticuffs but Sammo still rocks the screen. The Machine Girl which is also bloody disgusting with over the top gore. It's the Japanese answer to Planet Terror. Instead of a chick with a gun for a leg, you have a chick with Old Painless for an arm. And finally Chocolate from the same team that made Ong Bak. Instead of Tony Jaa it has a chick who kicks mucho ass and she's pretty hot to boot.

I understand that it was shot on expensive cameras (a complete waste of money if you ask me), but the movie was presented as found footage. It doesn't need an HD treatment because that isn't how it was supposed to be viewed. The Man Who Wasn't There was shot in color, yet the Coen Brothers haven't released a color version of it because that isn't the tone of the movie. It's a black and white movie, just like Cloverfield is an amateur home video. That's where I am going with this.

Man, now that I am older the Duck is awesome. I still need to watch half of it. But man, you can't top bad movies from the 80's. Like bad 90's movies means late night Sci-Fi crap. Bad 70's movies are just bad editing and boring. Bad 80's movies are what truely made the 80's awesome. Like if Howard were made today, its be like Alvin or Jar jar. But having that physical duck suit is amazing. Between this and Duckman i don't know who got shafter harder, its hard out here for a duck. I think the only really successful ventrue involving ducks and media was Duckhunt, even that Anna Paquin movie bombed (even though that was geese, the retarded uncle of ducks). Checking out who was involved with Duck, I am amazed that only (2) people had their careers ended by that movie, the director and producer. Everyone else managing to turn out fine. Shit even Tim Robbins got lucky and was put in one of the best movies of all time turning him from the doofy guy with a dumb look on his face all the time, to a serious actor. Jeffery Jones has pretty much been constant his whole career, it would be fun to go through and watch his movies as like a marathon and watch his belly expand. Back to Howard though, they just don't make movies like this, like Hitchhikers Guide is the closest one I can think of and Serenity. Movies that rely on physical props and sets. Some Lucas pioneered and then destroyed. I see Howard one the Razzie (personally I think the Razzies are the lamest awards given out, because there is little to no thought put into them) for worst movie of the decade. I don't think the Duck was that bad, it just get the bad wrap for being a huge financial flop. Only Micheal Bay is allowed to do that and still make movies.

    Cloverfield's "reality"

    by bouncy x

its not like Blair Witch where for a while they were trying and even succeeded in convincing people it was actual footage that was found. hell some people still thought it was real by the time the sequel came. everyone was treating it as reality, down to that special about the Witch's history, no where in there did it mention a movie or anything. this was meant to be real. Cloverfield wasn't ever trying that, their "found footage" angle was simply a gimmick, their way of telling this particular story. they weren't trying or expecting anyone watching to think it was real. it was still simply a movie. of course even if they had, the actor playing Hud used an HD camcorder, so of course the image can be better on blu-ray. the source was already high definition. to those saying it would betray the reality or whatever, they already did that. if this was meant to be truly real, they would have left it as video and not make it look like film.

sorry, but just because you didnt get a chance to see it in Ireland doesnt mean the movie tanked. its production costs were 25 million, and it made 170 million worldwide (before dvd sales) like it or hate it, it did make the studio lots o' money.

    by bouncy x

anytime some movie or tv series shows some buildings getting damaged or falling apart or whatever, some people always cry "they're trying to remind us of 9/11" . like jesus, its been almost 7yrs, time to move on. its possible to have city destruction happen and have it simply be a movie. not everything revolves around that one day. i'm surprised nobody accused Transformers of doing the same because Prime and Megatron made some buildings fall apart. as for Cloverfield, well their buildings actually fell sideways and things, they didnt fall perfectly as if it was detonated which is ironic because the movie looked more natural than the real event but thats another story for another day kids.

    in my opinion

    by novembre13

i'll get that out of the way first, since i know none of it means shit. "cloverfield" had a good idea, but it was poorly executed. and who was exactly showing this "found footage" and to whom was it being shown? and why would the viewers care about these morons who filmed so little of the actual monster(s) and so much of their petty last moments?
how about 10-15 minutes of "found footage", the camera pulling back to reveal the war room of viewers from the scientific and military community and the rest of the movie be an actual monster movie? j.j. abrams wanted an "iconic american monster" to compare to godzilla. you can't just throw some shit together, mix in cg and "found footage"(can you hear me sneer as i type these two words together) of some douchebag yuppie hipster-types and expect it to become an instant classic. no one gives a shit about "the blair witch project" anymore and no one will care about "cloverfield" in a few years.
as for all the release of all the movies ever made...stop.
please. yes, harry, the screwball comedies were genius and shirly temple was great and everything made before 1940 is wonderful. i for one, don't care. all this reverence of these and other moldy oldies is what holds back movies from breaking free of the same old tired formulas. of course this shit is looked up to as being groundbreaking...there was nothing like it before. the movie camera was still in its infancy. just because something is old, doesn't make it worthy of praise.
    that's all for now.

    Watched Cloverfield blu-ray last night

    by partyslammer

The movie was hit and mostly miss for me when I saw it in the theater but when I bought and watched the standard dvd, I really enjoyed it a lot more on my home theater. So when one of my local mom and pop retailers accidently had the br disc on shelves last week well before the street date, I went ahead and bought it.

What really makes this blu-ray release impressive is the sound which is among the top 5 hidef disc sound mixes I've heard on any title so far. Of course, due to the way the movie was shot, the 1080p video while a big improvement over the standard dvd is noticable, it's not a deal maker for anyone on the fence buying this blu-ray disc. It's the amazing, fully immersing and thunderous soundtrack that makes this a must buy demo disc for anyone with a serious home theater setup.

BTW, all the extras are in hidef as well.
